The success of all the institutions rests upon, not merelyon the boss who heads the institute, but also the employeeswho are integral part of any institution.

This having been stated that soft skills need to be pres-ent in not merely office employees but individuals be-longing to various other fields as well. If teachers wish tohave a powerful impact on their students and make theirclasses lively and memorable it is vital that teachers havesoft skills. Without proper soft skills, they will be unableto have proper classes and deliver their lectures in aproper manner. As we all know, students have a very lowattention span and their attention needs to be attracted bythe use of innovative techniques. A teacher who has soft

skills will be able to modulate her voice and even makecharts according to the need of the moment so that stu-dents are able to grasp the maximum amount of knowl-edge.

Greenwich University knowing the importance of soft-skills signed an MoU with All Private Schools Manage-ment Association Sindh on September 6, 2018. TheChairman APMAS, Mr. Tariq Shah and Ms. ShaziaNasir, Head School of Linguistics signed it. The purposeof this is to visit different schools not only in Karachi butthroughout Sindh to educate the teachers and studentsabout soft-skills.

Students of Mass Communication and Media Studies atGreenwich University had a great time while talking to afamous media icon, Maya Khan on October 13 , 2018 .Maya Khan in her exquisite informal way, shared herexperiences and journey of life to the aspiring leaders oftomorrow.

Media is a professional field where you learn not only bystudying at an Alma mater but also by gaining insightsfrom true professionals of this discipline. Keeping inmind the same strategy, faculty members always inviteMedia personalities to share their journey of learningwith the upcoming talent. These interactive sessions play

a tremendous role in encouraging graduating students tojoin the industry with passion and enthusiasm. MayaKhan has proven herself quite successful in various fieldsof the show biz industry in various roles as an actress, ananchorperson, a host, or simply a person with a goodheart and exceptional personal values to believe on.

Majority of the participants, the students of Masters’Degree who are about to graduate in few months time, were keen to know the dynamics of industry where theyare going to enter soon. Maya passionately answeredtheir queries with true life examples of her own. She en-couraged all students to deliver their best when they enterin their fields with hard work and honesty, while leavingthe results and success of their efforts on the Almighty.

Maya apprised the participants how she overcame thehurdles in her private and professional life and how shemanaged to get a place where she proudly stands todaydespite lot of personal, financial and ethical pressures. She agreed on a point that the mindsets towards assign-ing roles to a gender will never change in the society butthis should not be a demotivating factor for a male or fe-male while pursuing their dreams.

Students raised many pertinent questions regardingMedia Industry’s role in bringing a change for society.Maya stressed on the need that in order to bring a posi-tive change we need to observe and change ourselvesfirst, because accountability starts from “You” and onlythen it may create a positive impact on others.

Greenwich University (G U):What was the needof establishing I Am Karachi when there are somany similar organizations working for Karachi?

Ambareen Kazim Mian Thompson (A T) : Veryfew organizations are working on counteringdivisiveness, intolerance through neutral platformslike culture, art, music, Talks and Sports – IAK isusing these multiple asocial, apolitical platforms tobring people together, break down communaldivides that Karachi has seen in the last threedecades. Further very few cultural / creative oppor-tunities are being provided to the city’s youth – 60%

of the entire population is under the age of 30 so notproviding them creative opportunities means we aretaking away employment opportunities (in the hun-dreds of channels, film industry, music industry etc.)but also their ability to think critically and creatively.Everywhere else in the world education has movedfrom STEM to STEAM as Arts is considered essen-tial to all the sciences as well as technology, mathsand engineering.

G U: What is the mission and vision of your organ-ization?

A T: Mission:I AM KARACHI inculcates hope, pride & owner-ship within the citizens of Karachi using sustainablesocial & cultural initiatives to improve qualityof life, break down class and communal barriers &empower youth.

Vision:I AM KARACHI works towards a peaceful, vibrant& progressive Karachi that elicits pride and owner-ship in the hearts & minds of its citizens

G U: What are the challenges and hinderancesfaced by you in the execution of different projects?

A T: First of all, convincing people of the impor-tance of including arts in their lives, in the syllabusas without it we will create drones, not creative, critical thinking young people. In the West theconcept of STEM has been related with STEAM asthey realize without creativity no new solutions orinventions can come about. Secondly and mostimportantly the lack of funding for arts, for musicfor young people. If you ask a donor for funding fora school or hospital people will give willingly

Mrs. Ambareen Kazim Main ThompsonExecutive Director, I AM KARACHI

Karachi's most vibrant platform , providing a platform for youth to Counter Violent Extremism (CVE),reclaiming public spaces and engaging in public discourse. Promoting Sport, Music, Theatre,

Dialogue, Talks that bring diverse communities together on a common platform. Strong talent and mentorship programs with extensive outreach

but when you ask for funding for giving youngpeople a more rounded education and they will beless forthcoming

G U: Do you find any difference amongst the youthof Pakistan and the rest of the world with respectto the response of Pakistani youth to your variousprojects?

A T: Yes, Pakistani youth is immensely talented, keen and enterprising but they lack opportunities, platforms and face innumerable challenges. Theserange from societal and parental restrictions, lack ofplatforms for healthy narratives, public spaces andthe lack of platforms.

G U: How do you see your organization creatingchange in the society?

A T: We work across 82 communities, many inunder resourced areas, largely with young people. We give them the opportunity to engage in healthyalternate narratives, the ability to express themselvesthrough music, art, culture, talks, sports, dialogue. With a population that is 60% under 30’s the impor-tance of these alternate narratives is very important. It helps with the creative and critical development,in many cases mental health is enhanced. Our ini-tiatives most importantly break down communal, so-cial and ethnic barriers.

G U: What is the procedure of joining yourorganization?

A T: Its free and people can volunteer, partner withus or just attend our initiatives. They simply follow

our pages and social media platformG U: Is I am Karachi a platform for elites?

A T: Not at all. Our work in 82 communities isspread across all districts of Karachi from Mauripurto Lyari, from Tariq Road to Ibrahim Hyderi, fromClifton to Pehalwan Goth, so far from elitist.

G U: What is the response of the Civil Society?

A T: Generally, very accepting, participative andhelpful

G U: How do you promote your organization andwhat are your marketing strategies to boost it up?

A T: Through partnerships, media, outreach, socialmedia, newsletter, through activities and mix

promotional activities.

G U: What are your three biggest organizationalaccomplishments yet?

A T: Outreach, engagement, sustainability

G U: Why do you think experimental learning isessential for the youth?

A T: With all the challenges our society and envi-ronment faces, many unprecedented and manyunique, without experimentation solutions will not

be possible.G U: How would it help them in accomplishingtheir future goals?

A T: Increasing creativity and critical thinking helpsyoung people think bigger and better. Also, in Pak-istan we have created 100 plus channels and an up-

coming film industry but are not producing the man-power that is needed so we are importing con-tent from neighbors like India, Turkey, etc. insteadof producing enough content at home. Investment increative fields will create more employment oppor-tunities away from traditional sectors where em-ployment opportunities are reducing.

G U: How do you maintain balance between yourpersonal and professional life?

A T: I am first a mother than anything else. Likemost professional women I work twice as hard tojuggle my personal and professional levels.

G U: Your message for the students of GreenwichUniversity

A T: You are incredibly privileged to be students inone of the city’s premier schools and to live in a citywhich is hugely vibrant but has a myriad of prob-lems. It needs young people to take greater owner-ship of their city, to give back, to make this city andthis country something they can be proud of.

Pakistani youth is immenselytalented, keen and enterprisingbut they lack opportunities, platforms and face innumerablechallenges. These range fromsocietal and parental restric-tions, lack of platforms forhealthy narratives, public spacesand the lack of platforms.

Ms. Shazia Nasir, Head School of Linguistics and a soft-skill trainer conducted motivational talks with the stu-dents of Beaconhouse School, Islamabad and UniqueGroup of Colleges, Lahore during her visit to Lahoreand Islamabad.

“I tried to inculcate in the minds of our youth that a pos-itive attitude helps us cope more easily with the daily af-fairs of life. It brings optimism into our lives and makesit easier to avoid worries and negative thinking. If oneadopts it as a way of life, it would bring constructivechanges into one’s life, and makes him happier, brighterand more successful.

With a positive attitude we see the bright side of life, be-come optimistic, and expect the best to happen. It is cer-tainly a state of mind that is well worth developing.

Our attitude controls our life. But the good news is thatwe control our own attitude.

Attitude creates the way we feel about people and sit-uations. Our actions are a result of our attitude—which inturn creates a reaction from others”.

“It is our attitude toward others and the universe that de-termines the resulting attitude toward us. Have a posi-tive, joyful attitude and we’ll have positive, joyful results.Put out a bad, negative and we’ve failed before webegin”.

Talking about success and failure she said that since they

would be going to the university by next year, thereforethey must keep in mind that the preceding chapters oftheir lives were largely written by others – their parents, guardians, families, teachers and the like. They would bethe principal author of the next chapter – they would havethe opportunity to determine the direction, the plot andthe tempo of their story. This can seem as daunting as itis exciting, as challenging as it is empowering.

She concluded her talk on this note that the great thing is, they are doing something that they have chosen to do,not something that was chosen for them by others. Suc-cess has nothing to do with high grades, status, moneyor race. A successful person is one who is happy in hislife.

The students of sociology, visited ‘Binte Fatima’ the oldage home on October 18, 2018. It was merely a new yetdifferent experience for all of us. The old age home wasfilled with old women who were very sweet and wereeager to interact. We all had very interesting conversa-tions with them. Each one of us sat individually with eachone of them and talked to them. They opened their heartsout in front of us which touched us deeply.

For some entertainment, we sang songs of their choiceswhich made them very happy. Seeing them smile wasdefinitely an amazing feeling. We are very proud of our-selves for visiting them and we surely want to go again. We even talked with the manager

who told us the history of ‘Binte Fatima’, as I heard whathe had said, and my heart sank as to what I heard.

We bought stuff for them which they needed and will beuseful for them in their everyday life. The things webought includes: Soaps, Shampoos, Surf, Milk, Fruits,Tooth paste, Tooth brushes, hand moisturizing creams, and eatables like biscuits, etc.

We had a very fascinating overall experience, and hope-fully we would tend to keep helping them in the future.

Sociology students conducted a CSR activity and 3students namely Rafia Waheed, Angel Alfred andSumair Siddiqui went to Sahara Village (Old age home)

. It is located near Kausar Medicos, Clifton and is aproject of Sahara Public Rights founded by Mr. AkbarAli Rana.

This is a center which strives to serve the sick, old andchildren. Sahara village has around 35 people, both menand women of ages 18 to 85. Some of them had beenabandoned by their families while the others have no oneat all.

It was a depressing as well as an eye opening experiencefor us, to spend time with them and listen to what theyhad to say. It was sad to come across a resident of Saharavillage who was just eighteen years old and had beendumped by her family members due to her anger man-agement problem. It’s a strange world where one can bedeserted, even by his/her family.

We not only visited there but also distributed differentgoodie bags to all the members of the house. Uponreturning from there we thanked Allah for all theblessings he has bestowed upon us.

We experi-enced something that can be de-scribed as a truly incredibleinitiative taken by one woman whohas adopted the slogan #stopbeg-gingandstartlearning which is trulydoing something great for the com-munity.

Creating awareness about educa-tion and its benefits to the ones whocan’t afford or the ones who can notchoose for themselves because theythink that fate has chosen thislifestyle for them. The overall vibeof the children was very positive

and we saw something we usuallydon’t see in students nowadays. They had a drive in them to takeevery opportunity presented tothem regardless of where they areborn.

A HUMBLE AND GROUNDEDINDIVIDUAL, MOONIS ALVI, CEOOF K-ELECTRIC WAS KINDENOUGH TO TAKE OUT PRECIOUSTIME FROM HIS BUSY SCHEDULEAND MEET WITH THE EDITORIALBOARD OF GVISION, GREENWICHUNIVERSITY’S BIANNUAL,PUBLISHED MAGAZINE, AT KE’SHEAD OFFICE FOR A DISCOURSEON HIS SUCCESSFUL JOURNEYWITH K-ELECTRIC.

Mr. Moonis Alvi was appointedCEO of K-Electric in June 2018and has more than 28 years ofdiversified experience in thefinance industry, with a focustowards driving operationalefficiencies, financial planning andcapital restructuring. Since join-ing K-Electric in 2008, he hasserved in various leadership rolesincluding as the company’s ChiefFinancial Officer, CompanySecretary and Head of Treasury andhas played an integral role in thepower utility’s transformation.Being a Chartered Accountant byprofession, he is also a Fellowmember of the Institute of CharteredAccountants of Pakistan.

In Conversation with Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi,Chief Executive Officer K-Electric

“ K-Electric Remains Committed to DeliverUninterrupted Power to Karachi ”

-Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi

Mr. Alvi discussed in detail about the power landscapeand specifically discussed the challenges and opportu-nities facing KE which is the country’s only privatizedand vertically integrated power utility, managing all 3stages of generating, transmitting and distributing elec-tricity to Karachi and adjoining areas of Dhabeji,Gharo, Hub, Uthal, Winder, Bela. He addressed allquestions patiently while reaffirming that the powerutility remained committed to supplying uninterruptedpower to customers within its territory.

He stated that KE’s journey of transformation started 9years ago following its privatization, and throughinvestment and better governance, the company hasseen a turn-around which has also contributed to theeconomic development of the city. KE had sufferedannual losses between PKR 14 to 16 Billion up until2012, when for the first time in 17 years, the powerutility declared a profit of PKR 2.6 Billion. The com-pany has continued to strengthen its operations andinvest further in its capabilities and this cycle of rein-vestment and improvement have allowed it to remainprofitable. Per their recent Annual Report 2016, thecompany reported a profit of PKR 32.75 Billion. Thisprogress has been enabled by an investment-friendlytariff which encouraged investment across the energyvalue chain and emphasised efficient operations. Thistariff underpinned K-Electric’s robust business modelwhich prioritized customer-centricity and optimizedefficiency and resulted in 1,057 MW of generationcapacity being added, improved operational efficien-cies across all business areas, reduced Transmission& Distribution losses and upgradation of energyinfrastructure.

Since 2009 to date, investment of more than USD 2Billion has been made in the company – as a result ofwhich the fleet efficiency has improved from 30% to37.4% and T&D losses have been reduced from 35.8%to around 22.2%. This has resulted in more than 70%of Karachi now being load-shed exempt vs. 23% in2009 and 100% exemption for industries. Thus overthe last 9 years, K-Electric has strengthened the relia-bility of power supply to all residential, commercialand industrial consumers.

When asked about how Mr. Alvi sees the prospects ofthe power sector in the country, he responded, “I ampositive about the growth of the sector, but I will haveto say that this growth will come at a cost.”

He elaborated that electricity in Pakistan isn’t cheap ifcompared to other parts of the world where powergeneration is from cheaper sources. HistoricallyPakistan’s cost of energy was lower due to a largershare of hydel-power in the energy mix as well asavailability of indigenous gas. However with theexponentially increased demand for power, our energymix has shifted towards thermal and simultaneouslythe availability of cheaper indigenous gas has becomescarce.

To address this issue, Regasified-Liquified Natural Gas(R-LNG) fueled power plants have been commissionedin Punjab but these also are not cheap since the fuel isimported. At the same time, coal is also being exploredas a fuel and efforts are being made to increase itsproportion in the fuel-mix. Currently, Pakistan’s powerproduction through coal averages around 8%,compared to other countries which produce around40% of their power through coal. Mr. Alvi highlightedthat if power generation from Thar Coal sources iseffectively harnessed then it will be a cost-effectivefuel source. There are also efforts to increase the share

Fall 2018

of renewable sources through solar and wind powerplants but these are also extremely expensive withlower reliability and efficiencies. At the same timedams are also in the pipeline which will help in lower-ing cost of power production, however, these take timeto be implemented.

Mr. Alvi remained optimistic about Pakistan’s poweroutlook stating, that given the ongoing investments inthe power sector, power availability should soon out-pace demand. The only caveat is that investmentsshould continue to match demand growth so that powersupply and demand equilibrium is maintained.

Mr. Iqbal Jamil, Assistant Professor, Greenwich Uni-versity and a leading journalist asked about how K-Electric responded to the challenge of power theftwhich was an inherited issue. Responding to this Mr.Alvi confidently stated, “K-Electric has made signifi-cant progress in combatting the societal menace ofpower theft. Where previously losses were hoveringaround at 40% with very low recoveries in most area;through use of technological interventions such as Aer-ial Bundled Cables, community awareness and en-gagement efforts under Project Ujala and large-scalekunda removal efforts, we have successfully managedto bring losses down to almost 22% with close to 100%recovery in most areas.”

Mr. Alvi also mentioned KE’s policy of segmentedload-shed, which based on its success was made partof the National Power Policy 2013 and now imple-

mented across Pakistan. Per this policy, load-sheddingis connected to power theft and recoveries with areaswhere power theft is low, being entirely exempted fromload-shed. As a result, there developed a social con-sciousness about the menace of theft and its impact onavailability and reliability of power and has also re-sulted in public support for elimination of illegal ab-straction of power. This has enabled KE to drasticallyreduce the theft in areas such as Lyari and Lines Area.

When asked if the problem of load-shedding or theft isexperienced primarily in industrial or residential areas,Mr. Alvi replied that prior to 2009, load-shedding wasa universal problem, however the power utility decidedthat in the interest of the economic progress of the city, the industrial sectors should be exempt from load-shed.At the same time, residential areas with low theft andhigh recovery ratios were also exempted from load-shed. Since this was a departure from the usual practiceof universal load-shed at the time, there was some ini-tial resistance which was overcome by the merit of theargument that customers who are fully paying theirbills deserve to receive uninterrupted power supply. Asmentioned earlier this practice has been made a part ofthe National Power Policy 2013, which is another tes-tament to its merit.

Talking about K-Electric’s future, he said that thepower utility needs to invest continuously across areasof generation, transmission and distribution so as tokeep pace with Karachi which is growing by 4 – 5 %per annum. Plans in the pipeline include a coal-firedpower plant, a 900 MW RMG RLNG fueled powerplant, a USD 450 Million transmission enhancementproject which will add 1000 MVA to KE’s transmis-sion capability by March 2019 and other ongoing in-vestments in distribution upgrades. Mr. Alvi mentionedthat nearly USD 1.5 billion is expected to be investedover the next 1.5 to 2 years as part of a continuouscycle of improvement.

Mr. Alvi was also asked about K-Electric’s transactionand what made the power utility such an attractive in-vestment for a regional energy player like ShanghaiElectric. According to him, there is tremendous un-tapped potential in Karachi’s energy landscape thatShanghai Electric can unlock through its commitmentof USD 9 billion investment, supplemented by its tech-nological prowess and regional experience. He com-pared Shanghai and Karachi which had similarpopulations, yet Shanghai’s energy consumption was

10 times that of Karachi.

Speaking about some of the challenges that the powerutility faces, which in addition to theft and recovery is-sues also include unplanned developments and en-croachment of power infrastructure, Mr. Alvimentioned that the megacity of Karachi is unique andoften the circumstances that are faced locally have noparallel in other parts of the country. Despite this, K-Electric continues to engage with communities acrossall areas including Surjani, Orangi, North Karachi andLines Area and build stronger relationships with itscustomers. The utility constantly strives to createawareness about the collective societal responsibilityto combat theft and ensure sustainable growth whichbenefits everyone and drives the city’s and in fact thenation’s progress. Mr. Alvi also briefly touched uponthe circular debt challenge that the energy sector is fac-ing and its resultant impact on cash management andsustainable operations.

Mr. Alvi also talked about K-Electric’s effort towardsa smart grid solution which is a transformative techno-logical development taking place across the world. Atthe same time he also clarified that the taxes and feesapplied in customer electricity bills are as per govern-ment directive and are only collected by KE on behalfof the government and deposited with the national ex-chequer directly.

A key driver of K-Electric’s business transformationhas been its people transformation strategy whichstressed the recruitment of skilled and talented engi-

neers and business managers. The utility today has over10,500 employees and is harnessing the strength of adiverse and talented workforce to take the organisationto the next level.

Mr. Moonis Alvi concluded by saying that as patrioticPakistanis it is our individual responsibility to con-tribute to the progress of our country. He stressed aus-terity and stated we must strive towards bettermanagement of our spending, savings and income. Healso emphasised individual responsibility for safety andenergy conservation while highlighting that K-Electricactively advocates both these areas and has educatedthousands of consumers through its outreach programs
