A b s t r a c t It has been apparent for some time that there is a marked dearth of Iron Age artefacts, as normally defined, in Muster and south Leinster. The question of whether this apparent dearth is the result of post-depositional factors, or of chance, or reflects a real difference in the culture or population of the

extreme south has not hitherto been addressed. In this paper I show that it is, indeed, real.
