FUT VS. FUE TRANSPLANT

At DiStefano Hair Restoration Center, we offer patients two different hair transplant options:

• Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)• Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

While both methods of hair restoration produce great results, there are a few key differences. Most notably, FUE, which was perfected at DiStefano Hair Restoration Center, uses a method of extracting individual grafts one at a time from the donor area. The chart below outlines the reasons that a patient might choose one option or another.

FUT VS. FUE TRANSPLANT FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANT (FUT)

WHAT IS THE FUT PROCEDURE?During the FUT procedure, a strip of scalp is removed from the donor area on the back of the head. The incision is then carefully sutured, leaving a very small linear scar.

Our skilled technicians then carefully remove follicular units—which occur naturally in groups of one to four—from the scalp strip using a two-stage process. First, they cut the scalp strip into slivers. Then, they dissect the follicular units from those slivers.

Finally, the follicular units are transplanted to the recipient site. Tiny openings are created to receive individual follicular units, which are carefully placed to create a natural look.

FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE)

WHAT IS THE FUE PROCEDURE? HOW IS OUR PROCESS DIFFERENT?

With FUE, each follicular unit is removed individually from the back of the head using a device called Safe Scribe™, created here at DiStefano. This device microscopically separates hair follicles from the skin of the scalp to re-move each follicular unit while leaving it intact for transplantation. Many surgeons’ techniques require that all follicular units be extracted at the beginning of the procedure and then stored in a preservative chemical - often for hours. It is thought that these processes have a drying effect on the follicles, which can impact their viability. With our methods, each follicle is removed from the donor area and immediately transplanted to the host site. The result is higher graft yields because the grafts have a much higher rate of survival after transplantation.

NON-SURGICAL HAIR MAINTENENCE SOLUTIONS

Your transplanted hair is permanent, so you will not lose transplanted follicles. However, hair loss is progressive, which means that other areas of your scalp may continue to thin after your hair transplant. In order to maintain a great looking full head of hair, DiStefano Hair Restoration Center offers a number of other treatment options to our patients to complement your hair transplant. One of the best benefits of these treatments is that they are also extremely beneficial to the transplanted follicles as well, helping in the recovery of the follicles and ensuring healthier thicker hair.

Low Level Laser Therapy Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is one of the most effective ways to treat the pro-gression of hair loss today. LLLT has been found to arrest or stabilize hair loss in about 90% of patients. With consistent, use, it has also been found to stimulate hair regrowth in about 50% of patients.

Propecia (Finasteride) Finasteride is a tablet that is taken by mouth. It slows hair loss in addition and stimulates hair growth. It works best when it is taken as soon as hair loss is no-ticed, but it is also effective for later stage hair loss.

Formula 82M & 82F Topical formulas containing Minoxidil Sulfate and Finasteride have been shown in studies to stimulate hair growth. At DiStefano, we offer two topical formulas: 82M (5% Minoxidil and Tretinoin) and 82F (5% Minoxidil and 0.25% Finasteride). Both are FDA-approved treatments for hair loss in men and women.

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY FORMULA 82M & 82F

FORMULA 82MMinoxidil Sulfate is an active metabolite which has been shown in studies to stimulate hair growth. It has been the number one topical therapy for Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) since receiving FDA clearance in the US in 1988.

Formula 82M contains (5%) Minoxidil and Tretinoin, along with a topical steroid to improve efficacy and reduce irritation, complemented by other proprietary ingredients that improve the formula’s overall effectiveness, stability and usability.

FORMULA 82F Formula 82F “Finoxidil” is a topical compounded prescription solution containing the FDA- approved hair growth medication Finasteride.

If a patient, after completing an in person follow-up visit at 9 and 15 months, is unsatisfied with his or her hair transplant, we pledge to replace any graft that did not grow at no charge to the patient. Less than 2% of DiStefano patients redeem this guarantee each year. The vast majority of patients are very pleased with the results. If recommended, you will need to be on a hair maintenance therapy such as Propecia, 82M/F, or Low Level Laser Therapy in order to qualify for this guarantee.
