Description

Overcome traditional IT performance limitations to dynamically adapt tothe size and shape of your business

Today's dynamic business environments and economic uncertainty meanorganizations must work smarter to remain competitive and responsive to changingcustomer demands.

Key to working smarter is business agility and cost optimization. Our planet isbecoming increasingly smart and interconnected. As more people around the planetjoin the digital world, they drive exponential growth of business and non-businesstransactions for everything from Web commerce and RFID processing in dynamicsupply chains to on-line social networking and gaming. In order to meet demands, you need to ensure that critical applications experiencing huge demand levels, requiring immediate response, or expanding to massive scale can deliver.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale delivers extreme transaction processing capabilities thatcan ensure you have a Smart service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based applicationinfrastructure to support your most demanding business-critical applications.WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1 allows you to overcome traditional IT performancelimitations to generate the levels of global scale, process efficiencies, and businessintelligence needed for smarter business outcomes, such as sustainable competitiveadvantage and maximized revenues.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale is designed to work in heterogeneous environmentsacross all leading platforms and server virtualization environments. It processesmassive volumes of transactions with extreme efficiency and linear scalability.WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1 operates as an in-memory data grid thatdynamically processes, partitions, replicates, and manages application data andbusiness logic across hundreds of servers.

With WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1, IBM significantly expands these capabilities toextend the value of a linearly scalable elastic data store to a broad range of businessapplications that utilize the WebSphere Application Server dynamic cache service.WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1 can ease the burden on the application developerby handling many of the common data store exception and retry tasks. In addition,WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1 can be integrated into existing management tools.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.1 offers these new features:

• Simple cache for enterprise applications running on WebSphere ApplicationServer. To meet growing needs of your business, this enhancement offers nearlinear scalability to a broad variety of business applications with minimal invasivechanges.

• An L2 cache for high speed access to JavaTM Persistence API (JPA) entitiesfrom enterprise applications leveraging the WebSphere Application Server V7Feature Pack for OSGi Applications and Java Persistence API (JPA) 2.0. For moreinformation on JPA 2.0 and the WebSphere Application Server V7 Feature Pack forOSGi Applications and JPA 2.0, refer to Software Announcement 210-129, datedApril 27, 2010, or visit

• Support for Windows/.Net applications through ADO.Net Data Servicesspecification support.

• New monitoring console, which can provide real-time views into the WebSphereeXtreme Scale data grid

• New WebSphere Application Server Console extensions, which can provideimproved integration with WebSphere eXtreme Scale

• Statistics enhancements for monitoring and better integration with third-partymonitoring consoles

• Ability for administrators to include grid queries in tracking the source of SQLrequests to DB2 via support for DB2 Performance Monitor

• XTP capability enhancements that are designed to offer better performance, consistent and predictable response times, and lower memory costs

WebSphere eXtreme Scale enhances applications to support growing business needsthrough the following innovative usage scenarios and configurations:

• Simple data and database: Applications can access data structures to improveperformance and throughput using an WebSphere eXtreme Scale configuration asa local cache. WebSphere eXtreme Scale enhances this traditional data-cachingscenario by offering fail-over capability.

• Client/server: A Java Virtual Machine (JVM) can have a local WebSphereeXtreme Scale grid, which sits in front of a remote grid serving as a "near cache"for a subset of the data. This allows you to leverage a large remote cache tooffload back-end processing or speed up access to cached results. Applicationscan use the distributed locking services provided by the remote grid to coordinateaccess to shared data across clients.

• Map/reduce support: WebSphere eXtreme Scale clients can invoke agents thatrun against massive amounts of data on multiple nodes in parallel. They can thenaggregate the results stored in the grid in parallel.

Extreme scalability of application patterns and usage scenarios are facilitated bythe use of a non-centralized, peering configuration, and dynamic deployment modelallowing WebSphere eXtreme Scale maps to potentially span thousands of JVMs andallowing extremely large datasets.

In addition, WebSphere eXtreme Scale lets you add more partitions to increasecapacity and includes efficient, new algorithms to allow in-memory caches to growelastically as the number of available JVMs or actual machines changes.

Traditionally distributed cache products use Map APIs as their primary programmingmodel. WebSphere eXtreme Scale offers this, and allows graphs of objects to beeasily pushed to the cache. Simple Java objects can be annotated, and a simplerAPI transparently allows these graphs to be fetched from the grid, as well as to pushany changes made by the application back to the grid. This can significantly simplifyprogramming compared with traditional JCache or Map-based APIs, improvingproductivity of the application developers by allowing them to focus on the corebusiness logic.

Further, as the amount of data within the data grid grows, and usage scenariosbecome more ubiquitous, it is increasingly important to address challenges relatedto operational flexibility. A major challenge relates to managing a data grid runningon thousands of servers.

The WebSphere eXtreme Scale Catalog Service automatically lays out data(primaries and replicas) across the set of online servers in a balanced fashion. As servers are started or stopped, it automatically adjusts and elastically movesdata across the grid to ensure that failed replica servers are replaced, and spreadsthe data across all servers in the grid for optimum performance and continuousavailability.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale offers a flexible approach to the deployment of gridcomponents or an existing cluster packaging and deployment framework. This isaccomplished via the introduction of a centralized coordinator service called theCatalog Service, that:

IBM United States Software Announcement 210-125 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 5

• Achieves high availability by clustering, and uses synchronous memory replicationamong grid members to persist the runtime state of the data grid

• Enables optimal performance by automatically balancing data and partitions overthe set of servers hosting a grid

The new WAS console extensions allow administrators and deployers to enableeXtreme Scale session persistence, and to enable eXtreme Scale as a Dynacacheprovider directly from the WAS console. With the new WebSphere eXtreme ScaleV7.1 console, administrators and deployers can monitor eXtreme Scale grids in afashion that is already integrated into their current usage flows. The WebSphereeXtreme Scale V7.1 console can support AIX (32-bit), AIX (64-bit), Linux x86, Linuxx86-64, Windows (32-bit), and Windows (64-bit).

Processor Value Unit

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can belicensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processortechnology (defined within the PVU Table by Processor Vendor, Brand, Type andModel Number at

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues todefine a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processorcore on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.

Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or VirtualizationCapacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-CapacityLicensing Terms (see webpage below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licenseemust obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 inthe physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. Ifusing Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficientto cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program,as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

https://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html

1 An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical orvirtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limitedthrough virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similarrestrictions.

Note: Express and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum useterms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms andconditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware programs can be found inthe IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

Note: Some programs may require licenses for the program AND what is beingmanaged. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlementsrequired for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for thisprogram sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

Note: Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis ONLY. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly,

IBM United States Software Announcement 210-125 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 23

Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover theprocessor cores managed by the program.

Note: A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referencedbasis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements forthe activated processor cores available to the program, Licensee must obtain PVUentitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made availableto the Referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywherethe Referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which theReferenced program is licensed.

Client Device

Client Device is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A ClientDevice is a single user computing device or special purpose sensor or telemetrydevice that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from or provides data to another computer system thatis typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. MultipleClient Devices may share access to a common server. A Client Device may havesome processing capability or be programmable to allow a user to do work.

Examples include, but are not limited to actuators, appliances, automated tellermachines, automatic meter readers, cash registers, disk drives, desktop computers, kiosks, notebook computers, personal digital assistant, point-of-sale terminals, sensors, smart meters, tape drives, and technical workstations.

Licensee must obtain entitlements for every Client Device which runs, provides datato, uses services provided by, or otherwise accesses the program and for everyother computer or server on which the program is installed.
