Description

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS V5.3 and itscomplementary products is designed to providecomprehensive solution focused on the key dataprotection activities of backup, archive, recovery, spacemanagement, and disaster recovery planning. TivoliStorage Manager are designed to enable high availabilityof business applications by helping to provide superiordata protection and unique technology to helpsignificantly improve performance and resourceutilization. Additionally, optional application modules formail, databases, application servers, Enterprise ResourcePlanning (ERP), and hardware may help provide higherlevels of application and hardware integration with thedata protection process.

Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help ensure therecoverability through the automated creation, tracking, and vaulting of reliable recovery points. Tivoli StorageManager is designed to help the user evolve into an ondemand storage environment in order to help deliverspecific results in the areas of:

• Improved application availability• Optimized storage resource utilization• Enhanced storage personnel productivity

Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 is designed to help providesignificant improvements to the ease of use, and ease ofadministration and serviceability characteristics. Theseenhancements may help customers improve theproductivity of personnel administering and using TivoliStorage Manager. Additionally, the product is designedto be easier to use for new administrators and users.

Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center

A new Web interface for administrators, called theAdministration Center, is enhanced to help provide easierdeployment and administration, to help the user improvepersonnel productivity, and to help the user useresources more efficiently.

The Administration Center is installed as an IBMIntegrated Solutions Console (ISC) component. TheAdministration Center uses ISC to help provide aconsolidated view for managing the user′s Tivoli StorageManager servers. ISC can also be used with other IBMproducts that have interfaces built to the ISC architecture.

The Administration Center enhancements include:

• A task oriented interface guiding the end user throughthe administration of Tivoli Storage Manager servers

• A single interface to sign onto and manage multipleTivoli Storage Manager servers

• Wizards to simplify and help reduce the time neededto complete more complex tasks

• A new, more modern look and feel for theAdministrator Web GUI and consistent look and feelwith other IBM products

• An interface based on an architecture for potentialintegration among IBM products

• A tutorial to guide the user through the new integratedTivoli Storage Manager environment

Calendar-based scheduling

Scheduling of Tivoli Storage Manager operations may bedone with an external scheduler or with the built-in TivoliStorage Manager scheduler. The Tivoli Storage Managerscheduler provides calendar-based scheduling designedto increase flexibility of client and administrativeschedules. The scheduler can be exploited viaadministrative commands or a Web interface.

Some examples of schedules that can be created are:

• First and third Tuesday of every month• Last Friday of every month• First and 15th day of every month• Tenth day of last month in each quarter• First Saturday or Sunday of every month• Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Operational customization

Operational customization can simplify the control andscheduling of routine administrative tasks through theAdministrator Web GUI. This can help allowadministrators to set up migration and reclamationschedules to run during convenient server activity times. It also includes new script commands that can help allowthe processing of server commands in parallel in a serverscript.

Multi-process reclamation and migration

The time needed to perform Tivoli Storage Managerreclamation and migration for sequential access storagepools may be reduced when multiple tape drives areconfigured for these operations. The number of multipleconcurrent reclamation and migration processes may beconfigured for the same sequential-access storage poolto help utilize multiple drives, which is in addition to theconcurrency that occurs when there are multiplesequential pools. The new concurrency is designed tooccur on the volumes within a pool. Disk storage poolsand optical storage pools that are formatted forsequential access can also help utilize the multiple drives.

The efficiency of reclamation for off-site volumes may beimproved. Off-site volume reclamation may be completedin less time and the number of off-site volumes to bereclaimed may be controlled.

Collocation by group of nodes

The utilization of tapes may be improved when usingcollocation of a group of nodes whose data will becollocated together on sequential media. Collocation isdesigned to help reduce the number of volume mountsthat are required when a large number of files arerestored from a sequential-access storage pool by helpingto minimize the number of tapes on which the data isstored. As tapes provide larger and larger capacity, theycan be more efficiently used when data from multiplenodes is stored on them while still preserving the benefitsof collocation. The efficiency of Tivoli Storage Managerinternal data-transfer operations may be improved bytransferring all nodes in the group together. This mayresult in less database scanning, with fewer tape passesand possibly reduced tape wear for file processing.

StorageTek ACSLS library drive sharing

Tivoli Storage Manager helps to provide native supportfor drive sharing with STK ACSLS libraries. STK libraries, controlled by ACSLS, can be used with Tivoli StorageManager to help to provide drive sharing in the samelibrary among multiple Tivoli Storage Manager serversand also to help to provide access to use those driveswith LAN-free clients. This support offers an alternativeto the existing requirement of using external librarysupport and related software to provide these capabilitieswith Tivoli Storage Manager. Library managers, libraryclients, and LAN-free storage agents can be on AIX,Windows , and Solaris. Additionally, library clients andLAN-free storage agents can be on Linux and HP-UX. Thelibrary managers on AIX, Windows, and Solaris can beused with a STK library controlled by Library Station tohelp enable LAN-free access to a Tivoli Storage Managerserver on z/OS.

Data encryption

Encryption is now available for applications using theTivoli Storage Manager API, which includes the TivoliStorage Manager Data Protection for Domino . Newsupport for automatic key management can help enableuse of encryption with API applications, often without anychanges to the applications.

Proxy node support

Backup time may be reduced, and backup and recoveryoperations may be federated with proxy-node support.Tivoli Storage Manager nodes, when authorized, may bedirected to backup or restore data on behalf of anothernode. This can help enable concurrent operations frommultiple nodes to store data to the same target node andfilespace in parallel to help reduce backup and restoretimes in environments such as IBM GPFS and to dofederated backups. Proxy-node can also be exploited toprovide support for cluster failover of Tivoli StorageManager for z/OS clients in cluster environments that arenot already explicitly supported.

Client include-exclude usability improvements

The creation, updating, and validation of clientinclude-exclude statements may be made simpler. Awizard in the Tivoli Storage Manager Client GUI isprovided that can help allow users to visually select filesand directories to include or exclude them from theirbackup. The wizard can provide a means to modify andadd simple include-exclude statements and patterns fromthe backup tree. A preview can be done using the clientcommand line and GUI which will help show which objectswill be backed up (or archived), based on theinclude-exclude statements created on the local client, and the include-exclude statements sent from the serverclient option set, without sending any data to the server.

File back versions can be deleted

Files that have been backed up may be deleted by usinga backup-archive client. There are situations where datais backed up but must be removed from the backuprepository. Some examples of this include files that werebacked up (intentionally or unintentionally) that containsensitive data that needs to be removed, and files thatare backed up but were later found to contain viruses.

Backup files normally locked from backup (open filesupport)

Open file and online image support on Windows nowsupports using a single drive. Open file support forbackup and archive is available for Windows 2000 andWindows XP. Online image backup support is availablefor Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. Tivoli Storage Managercan back up and archive open files, files locked frombackup, and can also help provide a way to back up andarchive groups of files, as they existed at a particularpoint in time. Users have the ability to run pre- andpost-snapshot commands that can help them to quiesceapplications prior to the start of the backup.

Open file support for backup includes the variations:incremental, incremental by date, selective, andincremental image. Additionally, open file support maywork with both the sub-file and journal-based backupfeatures on Windows systems.

Multiple session journal-based backup

Journal-based backup, which is available on Windows, canimprove the overall backup time of incremental backupsby eliminating the scan time of a filesystem for fileselection. The journal-based backup function can be usedto provide concurrent backup of different filesystems. Theexisting journal-based backup capability is enhanced toallow multiple sessions to back up the differentfilesystems by running multiple instances of the backupclient or by using the Resource Utilization client option.

Activity log management

The management of the Tivoli Storage Manager serveractivity log may be more flexible. Administrators areprovided with information that tells them how much spaceis in use by the activity log, and which allows them tomanage the activity log based on its size. When theactivity log maximum size is exceeded, the log is prunedstarting with the oldest activity log records, until theactivity log size no longer exceeds the configuredmaximum size allowed. Similarly, if the activity logoccupies less space than the maximum allowed, nopruning is done. This log management option is inaddition to the existing option to prune the log based onthe age of the entries. The QUERY STATUS command isupdated to display the management type and value of thesetting for the activity log.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management (HSM)enhancements

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management usesHSM, which is an important component of information lifecycle management. Space Management helps freeadministrators and users from manual filesystem pruningtasks, and helps control the need for additional diskstorage, by automatically and transparently migratingfiles via policy to nearline or offline storage.

Space Management client support, previously availablefor AIX GPFS, is now added for Linux GPFS. SpaceManagement clients for AIX GPFS and Linux GPFSsupport can be configured to have multiple nodesconcurrently recall files. Using multiple nodes may resultin an overall recall performance improvement. Partial filerecalls, supported by AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS, may helpallow increased performance for recalling only partial fileobjects from the Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS server.

Space Management is added for AIX JFS2 and waspreviously made available for AIX JFS, AIX GPFS, LinuxGPFS, Solaris VxFS, and HP-UX JFS.

Linux on AMD64 and EM64T

The Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS 32-bit Linux Intelclient is supported on AMD64 and EM64T. This supportis based on the claims of compatibility with existing 32-bitsoftware by the AMD64 and EM64T vendors.

Estimate Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS databasereorganization space recovery

A tool is provided to estimate space to be recovered inTivoli Storage Manager for z/OS databasereorganizations. A database reorganization may result inimproved database performance. A databasereorganization is typically done infrequently and woulddepend on the database size and the estimated amountof space to be recovered and use patterns of thedatabases.

Improved defaults

Many of the client and server defaults are designed to beoptimized for use in today′s environments.

Operational reporting

Operational reporting uses automation and proactivenotification to help reduce the effort and amount of timeneeded to keep IBM Tivoli Storage Manager runningsmoothly. Operational reporting helps automate many ofthe activities that Tivoli Storage Manager Administratorsperform manually on a daily basis.

Operational reporting views a Tivoli Storage Managerserver as being in one of two states: Running Smoothlyor Needs Attention. Customizable rules, set by theadministrator, determine which state the Tivoli StorageManager server is in. The state information isautomatically determined and sent to selected recipientsin the subject line of an e-mail. The e-mail providesaccess to a customizable status report. If a server needsattention, the e-mail also describes any issues andprovides recommendations on how to get Tivoli StorageManager running smoothly again. Operational reportingprovides the ability to automatically send an e-mail tonotify of failed or missed scheduled operations.Operational reporting is highly customizable usingtemplate and extension files. These files leverage thepower of custom SQL select statements and can be easilyshared. Operational reporting also provides for periodicmonitoring with notification options.

Operational reporting runs as a Windows Service, and isintegrated in the Tivoli Storage Manager managementconsole as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in.Operational reporting can report on a supported TivoliStorage Manager server platform.

Value Unit-based pricing

Value Unit-based pricing will help align the prices of theseproducts to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve, whichprovides for a lower price per MSU (millions of serviceunits per hour) for larger capacities.

There is also a price benefit when customers grow theircapacity. Additional capacity will be based on the numberof Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed;for example, additional capacity will not be priced startingat the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacitythat is already installed.

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot beexchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unitsof another product.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine toanother within, but not limited to, an enterprise. Thecustomer may aggregate the capacity for all theprocessors the product is operated on to achieve a moreeconomic price. This will result in a single Proof ofEntitlement. It is the customer′s responsibility to managethe distribution of Value Units within the limits of theentitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacityas the product license entitlement. Subscription andSupport will be available in the country in which theagreement is made.

Product positioning

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help protectdata. If a disk drive fails, or if the user accidentallydeletes a file, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to helprestore your lost data. If your entire operation is hit bya disaster, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to helpkeep the data safe. Tivoli Storage Manager helps protectthe data by copying active online data to offline andoff-site storage, even from many 24x365 applications. Butthat′s not all. If the data growth exceeds the storage

-5- 204-310

capacity, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to becapable of effectively extending the capacity. TivoliStorage Manager moves inactive data from onlinestorage to less expensive offline or nearline storage.Tivoli Storage Manager can help automate and centralizeall these functions, making reports and providing alertsfor unusual events. Tivoli Storage Manager can helpbackup the data on any number of computers running anyof more than a dozen different operating systems fromnotebooks to mainframes. Tivoli Storage Manager is acomprehensive data protection application.

Tivoli Storage Manager ′s capabilities

Backup-restore

Comprehensive data protection starts with data backups.Backups are a copy of the active online data stored onoffline storage. Should an online storage device fail, adata error occur, or someone accidentally delete a file, the offline copy of that data can be copied back to onlinestorage restored. Tivoli Storage Manager is recognizedfor its efficient backup methods. Tivoli Storage Manageruses multiple techniques to help reduce data transfersizes to the minimum possible. These techniques helpreduce the total time required for both data backups and, more importantly, data restores.

Disaster preparation and recovery

Comprehensive data protection also involves disasterpreparation and recovery. Local copies of data canprotect against discrete failures or errors in equipment, storage, or people. But disasters tend to happen to entirefacilities, not just a portion of the equipment inside thosefacilities. Tivoli Storage Manager can help the user toprepare an additional copy of the active data forsafekeeping at an off-site location, to provide that extraprotection against disasters. Should a disaster strike anddestroy the online storage and computers, the off-sitecopy of the active data can be restored to new computersto get the user′s business up and running quickly.

Archive-retrieve

Tivoli Storage Manager goes beyond just data backups toinclude data archiving. Until online storage is asinexpensive as offline storage, archiving inactive data isan effective way to help reduce your online storage costs. The cost of storing a gigabyte of data on online storageis typically much more expensive than the same gigabyteon offline storage. Some percentage of a user′s data isinactive if it hasn′ t been accessed in weeks if not months.Does that inactive data need to remain on expensiveonline storage? Tivoli Storage Manager can help the userto move that inactive data to offline storage helping tofree up online disk space for more important active data.Should the user find that the inactive data the user hasarchived must be used again, Tivoli Storage Manager willhelp retrieve that data for the user.

HSM

Tivoli Storage Manager also includes a more automatedversion of archive called Hierarchical StorageManagement or HSM. Like archiving, HSM helps removedata from online storage and puts it on less expensiveoffline storage. But unlike archive, HSM leaves adata-stub on online storage that shows the name of theremoved file. With this stub, the user can easily accessthe offline data albeit much more slowly than if it wereonline. Tivoli Storage Manager′s HSM capabilities areautomated. Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to watchonline data files to see how often they are used. If notopened for an administrator-specified length of time, theyare removed to offline storage leaving only the data-stub

behind. For many businesses with huge amounts of data, but not all of it needed online all the time, HSM may beone of the best ways to save on storage costs.

24X365 application protection

Some of today′s most business-critical applicationprograms must remain on and active 24 hours a day for365 days a year. Fortunately, the manufacturers of someof these important programs understand the need for dataprotection. Some applications have a built-in capabilityto control external data protection applications. Bydirectly controlling the time and method by which a datatransfer to offline storage occurs, the application maycontinue operating with little or no interruption.

Tivoli Storage Manager ′s advantages

Management

Tivoli Storage Manager is a client-server application. One Tivoli Storage Manager server may handle hundredsof Tivoli Storage Manager clients. Tivoli StorageManager′s administration control is flexible via ahierarchy of administrators, each potentially designatedwith different management authority levels and specificdomains defining user groups or applications. Multipleadministrators may manage Tivoli Storage Managersimultaneously with data integrity. Multiple Tivoli StorageManager servers may be controlled from any TivoliStorage Manager server or via a Web interface from anycomputer. Data restore requests can be initiated andcontrolled from the Tivoli Storage Manager client, whichmay help to greatly reduce workload for theadministrator. The heart of the Tivoli Storage Managerserver is an integrated relational database. Thisdatabase catalogs each data transfer backup, archive,HSM, and the complete set of data for every TivoliStorage Manager clients. If the user tells Tivoli StorageManager to do data backups every day, the databaseallows the restore of data from every day in the past foras far back as the user specifies. Like a time machine,Tivoli Storage Manager lets the user go back in time toprevious versions of the data files. The user specifies thefrequency of backups, where the copied data is held(magnetic disk storage pool, optical disk, and data tape),how long it is held there until migrating the next storagetype, and how long each version is kept before it iserased, and the space it used is made available for newdata copies. The user also specifies how often data tapesshould be tested for data integrity, what percentage ofunused tape should remain before the tape′s data isconsolidated to another tape (freeing complete tapes forreuse), and how quickly data for specific users should beconsolidated from multiple tapes to a minimum set oftapes to speed data restores.

Automation

All the management capabilities of Tivoli StorageManager can be automated. Automation control is via anextremely granular policy engine. This engine may beconfigured down to the individual file level to cover thewho, what, where, when, and how of data transfers. Whohas access to this file? What data should be transferred?Where should it be transferred to? When should TivoliStorage Manager check to see if the file has changed andmust be transferred again? How should the transferoccur? With Tivoli Storage Manager′s policy-basedautomation engine configured and enabled, Tivoli StorageManager is virtually a set-it and forget-it application.Tivoli Storage Manager reports what it has done andhelps alert the user to anything out of the ordinary.

204-310 -6-

Support

The best automation and management features for dataprotection mean little if they won′ t work with thecomputers the user has. Tivoli Storage Manager′s clientsoftware supports over a dozen operating systems. TivoliStorage Manager′s server software runs on most majoroperating systems. Platforms vary from laptopcomputers all the way up to mainframe computers. Asupported server can work with a supported client, allcross-platform: Solaris with Windows, AIX with Solaris,OS/390 with HP-UX, virtually any combination. TivoliStorage Manager supports hundreds of storage devicesincluding optical disk and tape. To make sure backupsand restores can happen as efficiently as possible, TivoliStorage Manager also supports multiple network types —dial-up, the Internet, WAN, LAN, and SAN. Each ismaximized for the data bandwidth they are capable ofreaching. Tivoli Storage Manager is also an openproduct. Its application programming interface (API) isavailable through the Tivoli Ready program.

Transfer

Even with the largest data pipes connecting servers andclients, Tivoli Storage Manager helps to minimize theamount of data going over those pipes. Because of TivoliStorage Manager′s integrated relational database, TivoliStorage Manager is smart. Smart enough to know that ifa file hasn′t changed, it doesn′t need to be backed upagain — ever. Smart enough to know that if only a fewbytes of a file have changed, only those bytes must bebacked up again. For those data transfers that includemany bytes, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to beoptimized for disk-to-disk transfers. Instead oftransferring data from the disk of a client computer, overthe network, directly to a tape, Tivoli Storage Managerwill instead make the first transfer to a disk storage pool. After an administrator-specified length of time (hours, days, or weeks), the data on that storage pool is migratedto other, less-expensive, offline storage devices. Thistechnique helps allow more data to be moved faster, helping to reduce the total time of all data transfers bothfrom and to clients. Disk-to-disk helps provide a datatransfer technique better matched to the higherbandwidths of SANs and other gigabit networks. At theother end of the bandwidth spectrum, if a dial-up orInternet connection is dropped, Tivoli Storage Manager issmart enough to pick up where it left off. Instead ofstarting a transfer all over again when the connection isrestored, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to continuefrom where it previously ended.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager helps protect your data, andIBM′s service and support organization is a resource forTivoli Storage Manager users. Recognized as one of thebest service and support organizations in the world, IBMhas been supporting Tivoli Storage Manager around theglobe since 1999 and its previous versions, called ADSM,for more than a decade. Thousands of organizations areusing Tivoli Storage Manager today with many more thana million computers protected. Tivoli Storage Manager isa comprehensive data protection application.

TheTivoli Storage Manager administrator must explicitlyinitiate the database upgrade utility, using theUPGRADEDB parameter, after the Tivoli Storage Managerserver product has been installed. After the database hasbeen upgraded, a previous version of the server productcannot be used to access the database.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a fulldatabase backup be performed before installing the V5.3code, as well as after completing the installation. Referto the Installation Guide manual for more detailedinformation.
