Dear fellow academicians,

The most important treasure of any country is its child population and so does the role of every pediatrician. Am proud to be a pediatrician taking care of this treasure of our country and more proudful to lead the organization of paediatricians as their president for the year 2019.

The year 2019 has began with a mega annual event,“PEDICON 2019” at MMRD ground, BKC, Mumbai. We had a very successful conference from all the angles and for that all credits goes to the Organizing Committee of PEDICON 2019 and our Central IAP Office staff who worked day and night in coordination with each other. Delegates had the opportunity to interact with

International speakers and large number of highly eminent National speakers. Those who are involved with the organizational activities had opportunity to conduct various administrative meetings, drafting policies and plans for the upcoming year. We had

national training of trainers workshops for 10 modules of IAP action plan during PEDICON and we could train around 400 paediatricians as national trainers who will continue the knowledge dissemination activities all through the year all across the length and breath of the country.

The ever-growing child population of India needs the definite attention of our Government and our Pediatricians. The role of every pediatrician from urban to rural sector of our country is equally important in child health index. We will continue working hand in hand with the government and non government organizations for improvement of the child health parameters. We wish to carryout many community activities and by that way will try to strengthen image of IAP in the community.

For an average practitioner research has been made to look a difficult pasture to till. I wish to see a paradigm shift in this and feel it is time for IAP to come forward for promoting research in our country as research is the lifeline of modern medicine. I would like to take the Pediatricians to a mind set of research in daily practice. Let many do it may it be to any level from observations to interventions to innovations.

IAP under its action plans is trying hard to educate its members to improve the quality of child care and understanding of the child health tools and same we shall continue in the year 2019.In the era of quality control, IAP is also committed for same and we plan to implement unique model for improving quality of care.

In the era of digitalization, I wish our IAP functioning and learning activities through the IAP platform to become more and more digital and for that we have ambitious project of digital IAP.

As a President IAP , I have a cluster of good ideas in my mind to implement for a better tomorrow for children of our nation and for that I seek your whole hearted support and participation. Friends, my vision can only be through your eyes. Please send me your suggestions/ideas and proposals by sending email on my designated official email address : [email protected] , it will help me in drafting plans and policies for year 2019.

With warm regards to one and all

In the service of Academy

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Digant D ShastriPresidnet, IAP

Greetings my dear friends.

A very happy New Year to all of you.

It's been a rather hectic time with Pedicon preparation as well as completing my duties as the President elect of our esteemed organization. It was truly an honor bestowed upon me by all of you to come up as an unopposed candidate for President elect - a first in the history of IAP. It made me want to do something different during Pedicon as well as during my tenure at the helm of our organization.

For Pedicon, there were many firsts that took place. A few of them are enumerated below:

Peditalent - a platform for pediatricians to showcase their hidden talents to all

Pedifest - a platform for enjoyment made for spouses, children and accompanying guests

Clear separation between academics as well as cultural activities

Street children were given food packets during the entire duration of Pedicon

Any left over food from the buffets were given over to Rotii - an organization that distributes such foodstuffs with the under privileged section of the society

A conference which focused on pure quality academics rather than quantity

Hall of Fame - which recognises 5 pediatricians along with their contributions, post humously

Completely paperless conference

And many more....

All this would not have been possible without the relentless work done by the entire Pedicon team who have spent many a sleepless nights burning the midnight oil just to ensure a successful conference for all to enjoy. As you all know that a captain without a team is useless and hence I would like to thank each and every one wholeheartedly and with folded hands.

Now I would like to share a little bit about my vision for IAP and it's future:

IAP as an organization has grown in various facets

In this endeavor, the platforms of IAP have become very varied and diverse

While it is true that knowledge should be disseminated amongst all, it is difficult to share such a vast knowledge with so many members effectively, especially amongst the deep reaches of the country

There is a need to get together all the varied resources under one platform which will be accessible to all at their convenience. This platform is my vision for IAP - dIAP (digital IAP)

dIAP is the techknowledgey mechanism by which all members can gain access to numerous of IAPs initiatives in the palm of their hands irrespective of their location, free time, etc.

dIAP is a mechanism to get focus back on academics in a transparent manner

Best of all, dIAP will be used to not only remove dependence on pharma companies, but it will also be made using newly generated funds without touching a penny from the IAP's treasury. In fact, dIAP will be adding to the funds of our mother organization

It is with great pleasure that I get to inform you all that the executive board has approved dIAP and the plan will start it's initiative under the aegis of Presidential Action Plan 2018-19-20.

I will keep providing updates as and when they keep taking place.

I thank you all once again for your unending faith reposed in me and I assure you that I will try my best to ensure that I stay true to them

Warm regards to all,

Dr. Bakul Jayant Parekh

Dear Colleagues,

As I write my first message as Immediate Past president for Academy Today, my heart fills with pride that an year has gone by so quickly, one which will remain the most meaningful phase of my life.

Becoming the President of IAP had seemed like an impossible pipe dream a few years ago. Even when it finally happened, the onerous responsibilities ahead made it seem like a huge mountain to climb. Yet when actually on the job, time passed swiftly and things happened almost magically. I could hardly believe it could all be so effortless until I released the reality behind it all. The fact is that my election had been almost unanimous and this consensus had continued well into my term. Yes, I could enjoy a year of smooth sailing because I received the cooperation of all. When everyone contributes, even the impossible becomes possible.

Hence I wish to thank all members of IAP, my fellow office bearers and colleagues for giving me your best. I also wish to congratulate my successor Dr. Digant Shastri, Secretary Dr. Remesh Kumar, President Elect Dr. Bakul Parekh, Treasurer Dr. Upendra Kinjawadekar, all Vice Presidents, EB and OB’s on assuming office. I wish them a successful tenure and a bright future for IAP under their leadership.

My last task as IAP President was to deliver the farewell speech during Mumbai Pedicon. My message was well received with thousands of messages congratulating me for the wonderful year and it was a joy to interact with thousands of pediatricians from all over the country. I am deeply touched by the love and affection you have showered on me and I shall be ever grateful to you for the honor.

IAP is now poised for unprecedented growth in the coming years. Medical education sector has been rapidly expanding in the last few years and the progressive policy towards healthcare has resulted on the blossoming of a new generation of young pediatricians. I expect IAP to cross the 50,000 member benchmark over the coming decade. Both clinical knowledge and medical technology are making new breakthroughs year after year. We need to absorb and disseminate this flow. With challenges like these, we can indeed look forward to exciting times ahead for IAP. I assure you all of my continued service and involvement for the betterment of IAP.

My dear friends,

Warm regards,

After the extravaganza if pedicon 2019 and back in our seat started thinking about the task ahead. Gearing up district branches, state and south zone for various local state and national events. I am fortunate that Three dedicated Presidents are to guide us to achieve the goals. Invitations to attend the events are pouring in from everywhere. The love and affection showered binds me with fantastic friends in IAP. I have accepted me whole heartedly.

Friends i am lucky to see three generations of pediatricians. I am the link between the total clinical to technologicaly clinical pediatrics. I am thankful to my President Dr. Digant Shastri for deputing me to attend OMAG meeting held on 20 th Jan in Bangalore representing IAP.

Dr Soans was presiding the meeting. I presented the Aims and goals of IAP. My presentation was the best, other specialties like medicine ,surgery, family physicians, ophthalmologists also presented. I discussed with key person from U.S. Dr Sagar about how few people of NGOs mislead the key persons in government and public representatives. This will help IAP to improve its public image and reduce the intolerability.

Friends the year has begun, I have attended 6 programmes of IAP, spreading the message of unity, brotherhood and cooperation and community service.

Trying to give my little service to IAP.

JAI IAP, JAI HIND.

Its a great privilege and a moment of great honor for me to communicate to ~ 30000 pediatricians of the country through this bulletin of our very own organisation of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, the such second largest body in the world.

Childhood is an integral part of human life and comprises of a heterogeneous group with variable needs ,varied responses coupled with multidimensional vulnerabilities under varied circumstances. As Pediatricians we deal with the ever changing dynamics of emotional , social & physical health and development of children, hence we have the inherent capabilities and skills to mould this phase, which can result in a direct and long term impact on the future of our country. Thus collectively we can decide the face of our nation...!!

Unfortunately, while our still high mortality rates ,Wasting, Stunting & Anemia along with Low figures of exclusive breast feeding and vaccination continue to persist as ongoing challenges on one end ,we are currently also being overburdened by the rapidly increasing Non Communicable diseases, Antimicrobial resistance,Mental Health

problems, Addictions and Abuse on other hand. Preventing & Reducing the level of both extremes of malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, Primary prevention of Diseases , increasing enrollment and retention rates at school, guarding for environmental exploitation and abuse thus assumes enormous burden on all of us.

Together we can improve the Survival and Health ,Care and Nutrition, Development and education, Child Protection and Participation, some of the key areas which play a vital role in deciding the outcome of childhood. With a goal towards every child having a basic right to be born safe in a nondiscriminatory environment and grow in a healthy way through the formal years of life,we need a long term , sustainable multi-sectoral, integrated approach

A lot has been achieved by IAP in the past, yet a lot needs to be done. With its positive Advocacy and involvement of one and all around the Child ,I am sure we shall be no less than any other country in the world.

Wishing Good Health for All

Dear Esteemed Fellows and Members of IAP,

Greetings from Kolkata.

I am privileged to belong to a strong and vibrant body of 28000 academicians, which has evolved, nurtured and grown as a family over 56 years. The number of learned members, diverse academic activities, publications and advocacy is impressive and harbors the strength that can be comparable to any other academic organization in the world.

The seed of IAP was sown much before 56 years. To start with, Indian Pediatric Society was established in 1947 by Dr K C Chaudhuri in Calcutta. He also founded and edited the Indian Journal of Pediatrics in October 1933. Notably this was the first specialty journal in India. In 1950 the Indian Pediatric Society became the founder member of the International Pediatric Association established in Zurich, Switzerland.

In 1950 another pediatric society was formed, the Association of Pediatricians of India in Bombay with Dr G Cohelo as the Chairman. Its official organ was The Indian Journal of Child Health, founded in 1952.

The Indian Pediatric Society at its annual conference in Jaipur in December 1961 proposed the constitution of a single all India pediatric organization amalgamating the two separate bodies. The Association of Pediatricians of India at its annual conference in Indore in February 1962 responded with a similar proposal. A joint committee was formed. Dr Sisir Kumar Bose was elected the Convener. He along with the two secretaries of the two existing bodies Dr S P Ghosal and Dr B D Patel were given the responsibility of drafting the constitution. The two organizations jointly decided to form Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) as the single representative organization of Pediatricians of India. The central office was situated in Bombay. The Academy held its first national conference in Pune in early 1964.

Since then IAP has moved much ahead with various branches, chapters and with the mission of welfare of children of India. The vibrancy is palpable everywhere. I would like to highlight the foreword of the first number of Indian Journal of Pediatrics in October 1933 by Dr K C Chaudhuri – “If the future of the nation really depends upon the welfare of the child, it is necessary that steps should at once be taken to impress upon the people and the profession the necessity of providing for the protection and safety of the child in every possible way”.

Long live IAP.

Dear IAPians,

It gives me an immense pleasure to address you on this platform of Academy Today. Ever since Dr Santhosh Soans has taken over as President of IAP last year at Nagpur pedicon the IAP has come on to right track and we had an excellent year of academic activity reaching the many district branches of IAP. Dr Digant Sastri as the President of CIAP this year has started with a bang and we had a very excellent pedicon at Mumbai. We are expecting the epidemic of academics will become pandemic now with zeal and enthusiasm of our beloved President Dr Digant Sastri ji with able support of the President Elect Dr Bakul Parikh. I am sure our Amar Akbar Anthony will deliver another block buster year for IAP.

As a Hon Secretary of FBS it is my humble request to all IAP members to join FBS and make it strong to enable us to help our own pediatrician family members. I request all of you to take up challenge of fbs death benefit amount to family members of 9lakh rupees by 2020. We need to motivate our IAP members to join the FBS to achieve this target.

It is very good that IAP has come forward to help the martyrs of CRPF jawans of phulwama terrorist attack. We should continue to do our charity work for community to make the IAP presence felt by the people.

Other important thing is that IAP should take up is prevention of Anti Microbial Resistance in a big way. Rampant misuse of antibiotics for trivial viral illnesses should discouraged. In this regard many our IAP members need education and awareness of AMR and rational use of antibiotics. I request our President to release a declaration on AMR at NCPID 2020 at Hyderabad.

Let IAPians help IAP and let IAP help IAPians

Dear Members,

It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege to write to you as VP West Zone2019.

I do not have words to express my gratitude to all IAP members for overwhelming support to get me elected as Vice President West Zone 2019 with a huge margin.

More than the win, it was the sentiments expressed in congratulatory messages I received, that augur a great future for IAP. Our beloved IAP, nurtured by some of the most remarkable leaders in past, is on the right track again, leaving the tumultuous years behind. Common IAPians want leadership to work on goals and mission for which it was founded.

The year 2018 was a watershed year in the history of IAP. It saw a great movement re-establishing the credibility of our organization and restoring faith amongst the IAPians. It saw a huge effort to disseminate science among the members who very

eagerly lapped the opportunity. It saw an exemplary team effort with two presidents (2018 and 2019) Dr Santosh and Dr Digant, working together in designing and implementing various action plans. Dr Remesh as Hon Gen Sec and the whole team for the year 2018 deserve a big applause for their wonderful efforts.

In this back ground, we - the team for the year 2019 - have a huge responsibility to meet the expectations of our IAPians friends.

The year 2019 has kicked off with a great Pedicon 2019 which has set certain bench marks of excellence which will inspire future organizers. We are once again witnessing 2 presidents Dr Digant (2019) and Dr Bakul Parekh (2020) carrying on the legacy of combined efforts.

Our president Dr Digant has a vision and dynamism to plan and execute several programs aimed at academics and advocacy. The list of programs reflects the desire to have an all round development of IAP and its members.

I , with a national mandate as Vice President from West Zone , assure you that , I will put in my best efforts to go beyond my assigned duties , to translate vision of our leadership to reality.

You can reach out to me for any help. It is needless to say that my duties go beyond the zonal boundaries!

I shall strive to report back with some concrete work done in coming months.

With regards and best wishes to you and family,

Dr Satish Pandya VP West Zone

Dear Seniors, Friends & Teachers,

Warm Greetings from Central Office of Indian Academy of Pediatrics !!.

It has been a truly rewarding experience for all of us at the Office for the last one year and 2 months. The CIAP bandwagon of 2018 led by the charismatic President Dr Santosh Soans has handed over the baton to yet another vibrant leader Dr Digant Shastri to lead the academy in the new calendar year.

The Team 2019 has gone on a strong footing from Day 1 itself. Our ever enthusiastic President Dr Digant Shastri is leading from the front and his Team has already been able to reach out to all branches with plenty of academic and social activities.

The PEDICON 2019 organised by the seasoned leaders of IAP Mumbai will be etched in IAP annals as one of the most memorable events of all time. Central IAP sincerely thank Dr Bakul Parekh, Dr Bipin Shah, Dr Nitin Shah and the Mumbai branch of IAP led

by Dr Bela Varma, Dr Samir Dalwai & Dr Amin for gifting the delegates an academic and social feast par excellence.

As our visionary President Dr Digant Shastri has prioritised, social causes are to receive due focus this academy year. The CIAP OB has already had 4 invites in the last 2 months to liaison with Govt of India, MOHFW and few other NGOs in pursuing their goals to community level. All the EB as well as the OB members are energised to continue the wonderful array of activities of yester year. Our members also are equally enthusiastic about the academic and social activities taken up on IAP platforms. Our President Elect Dr Bakul Parekh has already pressed the push button for the revolutionary DIAP initiative for the ensuing year.

We at Central IAP salute the 29,000 plus members of our fraternity for embracing the mission and causes of CIAP in a positive passionate manner. Our Team 2019 promise to deliver the goods and will surely live up to the aspirations of our members.

May I request all my dear colleagues to reach out to the Office at will and raise your suggestions for better functioning of the Office and the Academy. We pledge to address all your concerns sincerely and promptly. We earnestly wish to do justice to the responsibility envisaged to us by our dear Members and live up to our declared motto “WE ARE AT YOUR SERVICE “.

Warm respectful regards to all my dear Friends in the Academy,

Report of PEDICON 2019

The Mumbai Branch of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics hosted the 56th Annual National Conference of the Academy – PEDICON 2019 - at the sprawling MMRDA Grounds, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai from 6th – 10th February 2019.

The conference was expected to be as the biggest PEDICON right from the time Mumbai won the bid. Needless to say only MMRDA grounds could accommodate such a large gathering. After having made the initial booking of the grounds, we received a major setback as the grounds allotted were taken away for the Mumbai Metro and Bullet Train work. Timely intervention by Dr Samir Dalwai through sources saved the day and we managed to get alternative grounds; though disjointed, along with Jio garden.

The team lead ably by Chief Organising Chairperson Dr Bakul Parekh Chief organising Secretary Dr Bipin Shah and MBIAP President Dr Bela Verma geared up for the gruelling preparations. Medivison team of Mr Sohil Kanakia was the PCO which helped the team tremendously.

Meticulous planning went on over the entire year. Finally the D-Day arrived.

Dr Digant Shastri did the Bhoomi poojan and the team took the blessings of the Divine before taking up the garangutan task of constructing over 2 lakh square feet in under 10 days. The workers were distributed shawls as a sign of goodwill.

The hiccups continued. The grounds were handed over 3 days late putting the entire conference preparations at risk. Deepali Creations and GECI took up the challenge and worked 24x7 to set up the grand venue in record time under the hawk like supervision of Dr Bharat Parekh.

The scientific feast prepared by the Scientific committee, led by master academician Dr Nitin Shah was a delight. Over 700 faculty from all over the country and abroad went about delivering their knowledge over the 4 days in 9 different halls simultaneously. The scientific feast had

9 CMEs

2 plenaries

2 IAP Quizes

4 IAP award papers sessions

One SC Oration

40 panel discussions

64 guest lectures

40 cases based discussions

24 quiz sessions

32 rapid fire sessions

24 challenges sessions

24 symposia

All delivered by total faculty of 750

eminent academicians and 250 chairpersons

Over 11000 people (including delegates, accompanying family, pharmaceutical industry persons and organising team)were accommodated in the venue. The exhibition area and the halls were unique as they were all German hangars which were erected without any central pillars. The entire scientific halls were soundproofed and air conditioned for the perfect experience of the delegates. Another first was that the committee went at great lengths to make it a completely eco friendly and paperless conference.

The delegates had more reason to celebrate as the lip smacking food served by Mini Punjab was the best ever for a conference of this magnitude. Over 4 days the menu was different for each meal and catered to all the tastes from North to South and East to West. The menu had been painstakingly curated by the Catering committee led by Dr Bipin Shah who was also the Chief Organising Secretary. In a first, breakfast was also served to all the delegates on all 4 days.

32 | IAP BULLETIN | January-March 2019

The evenings were no less. The Presidential Dinner had a gala music night by ace musician Mr Ajay Madan and troupe. This was followed by another first-time PEDITALENT finals where the best of the talented pediatricians flaunted their vocals. Banquet nights took it a notch higher. Shankar Mahadevan left the crowd in a trance and asking for more. We rounded up with a foot stomping performance by Benny Dayal.

The PEDIFEST area drew large crowds. The attendees were treated to Master class by Master Chef Shazia Khan, Salsa classes and various entertainment programmes which were enjoyed by everyone along with a wonderful shopping experience. Dr Samir Dalwai and team laid the groundwork for this splendid entertainment.

What marked PEDICON 2019 as a path breaking medical conference was the simple fact that every lunch that was served to the doctor delegates was accompanied by sharing lunch with hundreds of street children and children in shelters across Mumbai.

We coordinated with Hamara Foundation, a renowned NGO working with disadvantaged children in Mumbai- this was facilitated by our senior national past president Dr Ramesh Potdar. The same kitchen of Mini Punjab that served food to the doctors cooked up a tasty and nutritious meal selected by our TEAM PEDICON 2019 for more than five hundred children every day and was accompanied by a pediatrician – a volunteer from our Organising Committee who oversaw the transport of the food and the actual implementation. Photographs were taken to ensure complete transparency.

Similarly, there was no undue wastage of food, as food not utilized in the Dining Halls was handed over to Mumbai ROTI Foundation (an eminent NGO helmed by ex- Police Commissioner, Shri D Sivanand). This foundation collects the food and redistributes it to the needy and hungry in an attempt to curb malnutrition and hunger as well as not allow the wastage of good food.

Five stalls with infrastructure were provided without any cost to NGO Yashaswini Abhiyaan’s Mahila Bacaht gat (Women’s Savings Group) to display and sell homemade eatables and other consumables as well as traditional produce.

More stalls were provided to V D Rehabilitation Foundation that works with children with Intellectual Disability, the Fragile X Society of India as well as the Rett Syndrome Society at zero cost so that

awareness for children with special needs is carried to all paediatricians of India.

PEDICON 2019 takes solace in the humble fact that we could look beyond the science and the accompanying peripherals that go along with a conference and try to achieve a greater moral, ethical and social responsibility.

We humbly thank the President, the Immediate Past President, the President Elect, Honorary Secretary General, the EB, CIAP Office, the Delegates, the industry and each member of IAP for letting us have this honour. Last but not the least, we need to thank the entire organising committee which worked relentlessly through the year, meeting every week sacrificing their time and energy to make PEDICON 2019 a phenomenal success.
