Polling procedures I picked up your May 24 issue with

my usual anticipation and noticed the "Best of Honolulu" poll on the back page. Under the heading "Arts" was the category for "Best public art (no, not the zoo fence!)." What is this? I understand it wasn't your paper's intent to demean the fence's artists. The zoo fence won last year, and you want another group to have a chance this year. Fair enough. Why weren't all the repeat categories list­ed with last year's winners so they also could be excluded from the poll? Why do you specifically exclude the zoo? If people still think the zoo fence is the best place for public art, why not let it win again? How about the category ''Best alternative news week­ly (no, not the Honolulu Weekly!)." It doesn't feel right, does it?

There is lack of space in Honolulu for independent artists to get their work in front of the public. Some artists don't want to lose control to a gallery over their work's presenta­tion. Others want to be in touch with the people who buy their art. At the fence the public can meet the artist, and they can also buy original art without paying for the overhead, thus getting good art at a good price. Incidentally, the fence includes such

We were looking for something dif­ferent this year-for a single piece of public art, not a collection. -Ed.

Uhi Lani losers We are of a time when many ques­

tion the 'judgment calls" of our lead­ership. The decision to rezone the entire 1, 114 acres desired for the Lihi Lani project could prove to be an economic monster for the devel­opers, the city and the state.

If eco-tourism is proving to gain popularity worldwide, then taking away this special landscape is con­trary to the direction we should be taking. The biggest losers are the residents of this area, whose lifestyles and taxes will eventually be affect­ed. They will have to put up with the disturbance this project will create for many years and will forever lose their mountain view.

Families with young children will have to be extra careful when the trucks and heavy equipment come rolling in. I hope the city, through the permit process, will be able to contain this project within its bound­aries and minimize traffic conges­tion for public safety.

The developers must be held responsible for any pollution that this project causes in this area.

This development has had many negative repercussions in human relations. The politics surrounding this issue may be profitable to a few but damage many - some irrepara­hl y fhose who have been willing to support this rezoning and pro.1ect development are now obligated to cure the ill feelings that may have resulted between family and friends because of their positions.

One way to start would be to put the same energy and political pres­sure they used to get the project approved to hold the developers accountable for traffic safety, air and ocean pollution. This area has a soul that must be nurtured in a positive manner.

Tackiki? Am I the only one who notices

how tacky Waikiki looks these days? Granted, it's not been in great shape the past few years, but now it looks its very worst: badly kept storefronts, subliterate signs, dirty sidewalks, stumblebum leafleteers, rundown window displays, misspelled direc­tions, empty stores, garbage on curbs and comers. If we've got to have a tacky Waikiki, couldn't someone police the joint? It's beginning to look Third World - dirty, slipshod, ill kept Has Honolulu grown so smug about its alleged treasures that it's in denial about the litter-laden, carny, kitschy and unimaginative hawking of gimcrackery items? Even cattle­driven tourists are complaining about high prices for toy services, inatten­tive clerks, broken-down parking lots and tumbledown buildings.

Shouldn't the HVB be involved in dealing with this problem? Or are they too busy taking each other to lunch to notice? Sometxxiy better get busy - and fast. This tackiness is just plain embarrassing.

Mini monarch The Merrie Monarch is the oldest

hula competition, but the oldest inter­national competition is the King Kamehameha Hula Competition. This Friday, 23 hula halau, includ­ing groups from California and Japan, will grace the stage at the Blaisdell Arena for two evenings of dancing and chanting, Island style. The draw­ing power of this competition, now in its 22nd year, is a testament to its offering hula fans something a little bit different.

It also gives some deserving dancers who were unable to attend the big event on the Big Island a chance to show -and chant-their stuff. Some of the highlights are unique to this competition. Both nights showcase kahiko and auana (traditional and contemporary) dance styles; the Merrie Monarch compe­tition keeps the two styles on sepa­rate programs. Also worth a look is the combined category, fearuring men and women dancing together.

But Keahi Allen, executive direc­tor of the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage, notes that this competition is an extension, not a rival, to the Merrie Monarch. The main focus is preserving Hawaiian culture: "We want to support the study of hula and encourage future generations to embrace their cultural heritage and allow it to flourish," Allen says. In keeping with that ideal, judging at the competition is rigorous and detailed, with both the traditional and contemporary dancers judged on their use of the Hawaiian language. Another special feature is the indi­vidual-chant division, open to both men and women and credited by the competition's organizers with sus­taining interest in learning tradition­al chant techniques. ''We're especially proud of the chant category," Allen says.

Each year the auana division is based on a central theme. This year's theme is "flowers," and each halau will perform a hula written for or about flowers. For more information, call 536-6540.

Figure it out Wondering how the state budget

deficit can balloon by several mil­lion dollars overnight? It might have something to do with the fact that departments within the executive branch don't work with the same figures.

According to a recent investiga­tion by the watchdog group Common Cause Hawaii, between the Department of Human Resources Development (DHRD), the Depart­ment of Personnel Services (DPS), the State of Hawaii Data Book, the Tax Foundation and the authorized State Budget, statistics on the num­ber of employees in the executive branch vary widely. In fact, none of the departments report the same figures.

For example, according to the DPS, there were 52,672 executive-branch employees as of Dec. 31 , 1993, while the state's ''Data Book" was report­ing 64,250 for the same time period: a 1 1 ,578-person gap.

While there's no telling how much this discontinuity is costing in inef­ficiency, the fact that it exists on such a grand scale is alarming. One expla­nation could be that the reports are not standardized, so that some depart­ments may not include part-time, or noncivil-service employees while other departments do. Hence the Common Cause investigation.

Rather than implying governmental mischief, the chairman of Common Cause, Desmond J. Byrne, is request­ing clearer reports. In a June 5 letter, Byrne asked the DHRD to publish standardized departmental monthly figures regarding employment, rec­onciled with numbers that the Legislature has authorized for such employment.

We can only hope Common Cause will force the state bureaucracy to make common sense.

regional member countries of the South Pacific, France has announced resumption of nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll in Fench Polynesia, eight new tests to begin "soon." The Cook Islands is the country nearest the test site, but its representatives said they had received no notice about the resumption. In response to the situation, Australia and New z.ealand both indicated they would stop any defense cooperation with France com­pletely, a response some have con­demned as too weak. Expect more developments soon.

Considering the fact that the British press once thought of Charles as eli­gible and elusive, one might pause, but the inclusion of Master Barber Ian Matthews certainly made for some interesting appearances. (As long as we're pursuing that rich Beavis vein, we might as well implore you to keep the master-baker jokes to yourselves).

Matthews, one of a line of Trumper barbers who have been using the cel­ebrated "wet shave" on royal fami­ly members for over a century, demonstrated the art of the perfect shave on the viscount's face and at least one pair of Liberty House cus­tomers' legs.

or 5,000 years man struggled valiantly to break the bonds of earthbound communica­tion. On May 24, 1844, a sim­ple message, uttered at the speed of light, set man free. Samuel Morse, his digit tap­

ping .rhythmically on a primitive bina-ry switch, broadcast this fateful message to the world: "What hath God wrought?"

At this moment Morse invented new media and made the need for direct, person-to-person, interactive communication obsolete. In the 1 50 short years since then, man's insis­tence on communicating faster, more personally and with greater degrees of complexity has sped right along, much faster than light The most sig­nificant tools along the way have been the phone, radio, television and the computer. As the availability, ease of use and affordability of these tools evolved, they wove themselves comfortably into our most personal interactions.

In the midst of the integration of communication technology into our lives, great entertainment tools began to grow at the intersection of need and greed. The more our communi­cation tools integrated themselves into our lives, the more the enter­tainment tools were bundled with them. The entertainment tools and media tools cross-pollinated. The first television "newscast" was a broad­cast by RCA promoting the opening of their pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. This was big news. A new and exciting technology was ush­ering itself into our lives, and self­promotion seemed to be the best way to subsidize its development

Today the "newscast" has become a common format for commercials, an engaging blend of communica­tion and entertainment, spiced by a healthy dose of commerce on the side. Together, as "communitain­ment," they have become the seam­less interface that helps mediate and stimulate most of our daily needs and desires.

In 1 995 we find our communi­tainment system in the midst of a major new upgrade. The steadfast support that our communication and entertainment tools have provided for decades is currently mired in the chaos of deep, unrelenting change. Convergence -the morphing of tele­vision, telephone, computers and money into a single, ubiquitous mul­timedia vending machine - is dis­rupting our placid interface with the world.

It is a curious upgrade, for we are all very comfortable with the com­ponents and have been for decades. This new multimedia approach is rather odd. The sum of the compo-

nents is more unpredictable and far more compelling than the parts. Nobody is really sure how to use them or what they mean or how much money they can make. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the World Wide Web.

The Web is sort of familiar, yet somehow it isn't quite right. The promise is so convincing but its deliv­ery is so immature. Many people blame the gap between the promise and the reward on technology. "If only the video were as good as I get off a CD. If only the sound were as full as my car stereo. If only Cindy uploaded faster. Anyway, I know the wizards will solve it soon. In the meantime, anyone know the URL for the free Pizza Hut screensaver?"

Anyone on the Web who is past the joyriding phase knows that it is primarily a dreary wasteland of vac­uous billboards and trite, repurposed pap best left on paper. The skeletons of our traditional media and enter­tainment clutter the Web in vain attempts to lure us into a semifa­miliar space where we are asked to sus-

high-tech tool to mediate our inter­action with communitainment. "In the future it's going to be a lot easi­er to watch television, get a date, order pizza and check my e-mail all at the same time!" True - but wrong.

The Web isn't about being a high­tech vending machine any more than television is about infomercials. The Web is about change - deep, sig­nificant, earth-shattering change. You name it, the Web will change it. And the Web itself, by its very nature, will continue to change. The greatest irony in history is the fact that the Net was the brainchild of the military, and it was designed to run without anyone in charge. The technology is wide open, and there's no proprietary code overriding it.

Because of this, anyone can contribute to its modification and redirection.

Therein lies the beauty of the Net. It is a system without an FCC or a Rupert Murdoch. Even Bill Gates is having a hard time. It is a system designed to keep them and any other form of centralized power at bay. While the buzz about the Web is about businesses get­ting wired, they're finding that the rules are different and that a couple sponsorships won' t translate into global control.

The World Wide Web, we all know, is about the future, and the future isn't here yet. We're told, "It will revolutionize the way you do business, the way you shop, the way you live, the way you make love. Be patient while we negotiate our monop­olies." All this is real-

ly true. Nobody knows what the future will be, but they do know it will have ISDN lines and secure transactions.

The problem with significant change is that it is usually evaluated through the prism of an aging paradigm. It's human nature to inter­pret the unfamiliar against the famil­iar; the Web is a case study in this phenomenon. In its present form, if you could say it has a present form, the Web is a raw and chaotic force that is clearly becoming a part of many people's lives. It is doing so by leveraging the equity of familiar tools and merging them into a new

systems, communities of interest in which we will all have the choice, for the first time, to define our interactions in relation to our interests. Some will, of course, be commercial, and the rest will span the interests of man on Earth. They will be great, helpful and probably stimulating. Others will look like the wrong billboard on the wrong high­way.

The Net will always change. No one is powerful enough to control it. And it is the best time in history to be a human being with an itch to communicate with your fellow man - or yourself. •

to regulatory laws or federal air-quality standards.

eff Sutton wrinkles his nose a t the acrid fumes drifting across his desk. It's 9:45 a.m., a time when the office air typical­ly transports the scent of bad coffee or perhaps the faint aroma of jelly dough­nuts. But today the hallways reek unmis­takably of sulfur.

As a geochemist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Sutton has the equipment to analyze the odor. He and colleague Tamar Elias pull out a sulfur dioxide detector tube and take a quick reading of 600 parts per bil­lion. Moving outside to the parking lot, they measure 1,000 parts per billion, a value almost as high as the sulfur dioxide concentrations associated with the deadly London fog in December 1 952, which claimed 4,000 lives.

You might expect air pollution this bad in Manhattan or Mexico City. �ut the USGS researchers work in sparsely populated Volca­noes National Park on the Big Island, far from anything even remotely resembling a smoke­stack. The neighborhood has virtually no indus­try - just a small tourist town and Kilauea.

Unlike better-known volcanoes, which explode for a few days and then take an extend­ed vacation, Kilauea has worked almost non­stop since 1986, producing a slow but steady supply of lava. As a by-product the natural fac­tory also emits about 1 ,000 tons of sulfur diox­ide gas each day, making it one of the biggest sources of air pollution on the island. The sul­fur compounds have proved so persistent in some spots that residents have invented a name for the problem: vog, for volcanic smog.

Nine years ago, during the early stages of the eruption, residents viewed vog as a nui­sance that would disappear when Kilauea shut down. But the ongoing eruption has outlasted everyone's expectations; and in increasing numbers, locals are indicting Kilauea's chem­ical cloud as a real threat.

"We're realizing that the gases emitted by the volcano when it is in continuous eruption can cause health problems, can harm agricul­ture and can have economic effects. It's a real concern," claims David A. Clague, scientist­in-charge at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory at Kilauea.

But others say vog has become a scapegoat, an easy excuse for people's myriad physical complaints. 'The latest studies show that there haven't been any significant health effects from vog," argues Katherine Hendricks of Hawaii's Department of Health in Honolulu.

The vog question mirrors in many ways the debate over other potential health hazards, such as exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke or pesticides in food. But the Hawaiian issue breaks all molds because the pollution in this case comes from nature itself, which pays no attention to regulatory laws or federal air-qual­ity standards.

To trace the origins of vog, Sutton and Elias strap on gas masks and strike northeast across the floor of Kilauea's summit crater. Hiking across the black lava flows, they reach a mound bedecked with yellow crystals glistening in the sunlight The crystals contain sulfur compounds that precipitated out of gas plumes exhaled by the volcano. Elias inserts a tube into one pro­ductive fumarole and collects a sample of the noxious fumes for later analysis.

For instance, the lethal London fog persist­ed for days, whereas the ex­treme pollution at Kilauea usually lasts only for minutes or hours.

Sulfur dioxide afflicts only the immediate volcanic neigh­borhood because the gas oxi­dizes before it can drift far from Kilauea. Chemical reactions tum the sulfur dioxide into sul­fates of ammonia and hydro­gen. These tiny acidic particles absorb moisture from the at­mosphere. With their superior talent for scattering light, the sulfate particles can create an impenetrable haze reminiscent of conditions in Los Angeles.

For the 40,000 people living in and around Kona, fresh air comes only occasionally, when a shift in the trade winds sends the vog to the Hilo side of Hawaii and to the other islands hundreds of kilometers away. The haze even reaches Hono­lulu at times, prompting com­plaints from residents there.

"Someone is going to get the vog. It just depends on where the wind blows," Sutton says.

When the volcanic haze sets in, it makes a mockery of Hawaiian tourist brochures that tout azure skies overlooking the tropical Pacific. But many islanders, particularly in the hard-hit Kona region, worry that vog is harming more than just the view.

In a study conducted for the American Lung Association of Hawaii, environmental scien­tist James W Morrow analyzed the composition of air particles in Hilo and Kona from 1 989 through 1992. For the first year

exposure to average sulfate concentrations ranging between 4 and 5 micrograms per cubic centimeter of air. Hilo residents faced less than half those amounts, except when wind rever­sals boosted sulfate readings closer to those seen in Kona.

No standards exist for sulfate pollution, and scientists do not know how high the concen­trations can get before they start harming human health. To work around this problem, toxicol­ogist Leslie Au of the Health Department looks at other sulfur standards. He draws an opti­mistic conclusion from Morrow's data.

Au compares the measured sulfate concen­trations in Kona to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for sulfur diox­ide. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, which sets the NAAQS, people should not be exposed to concentrations of sulfur diox­ide exceeding an annual average of 80 micro­grams per cubic meter.

Although the standard applies only to sul­fur dioxide, Au reasons that it can provide some tough guidelines for sulfate particles. ''Presumably, the NAAQS levels were estab­lished in order to protect sensitive people. But just in case they weren't, an additional safety factor of 10 [or dividing the sulfur dioxide NAAQS by 1 OJ would bring the standard down to 8 micrograms per cubic meter," he says.

By Au's calculations, therefore, sulfate con­centrations on Hawaii fall well below the level where they should cause health problems, even in Kona. "We jump to the conclusion that the vog looks worse than it actually is," Au says.

Morrow disagrees. "I think Au is way off base by trying to make a comparison with the sulfur dioxide standard. I wouldn't mix up sul­fur dioxide and sulfates; they are totally dif­ferent," he argues.

Colleagues of Koutrakis detected a statistical connection between bronchitis and atmos­pheric sulfate. Incidence of ill­ness increased in direct proportion to the sulfate con­centrations in the air; in other words, the city with the high­est summertime sulfate read­ings showed the highest rate of bronchitis.

Some results suggest a possible health effect while others don ' t . What 's more, the research teams have yet to publish their results in peer-reviewed jour­nals. For these reasons, doc­tors and health officials remain cautious about mak-

Although the results do not prove that sul­fates cause or exacerbate bronchitis, they do suggest a potential link. By extension, Morrow says, they also raise a warning flag about vog because sulfate concentrations in Kona rival the highest seen in the Harvard study.

"I think there's a Legitimate concern about health effects here. I don't see it as a prob­lem for tourists, but there is a potential for a long-term respiratory hazard. The respirato­ry health of children in that area may be some­what reduced compared to the respiratory health of children not similarly exposed," Morrow says.

Koutrakis agrees that the sulfate amounts seen in Kona could have adverse effects. But he notes that residents of the eastern United States face similar sulfate concentrations, in addition to a complete stew of other pollutants. "I don't think [vog] is worse than what peo­ple breathe right now in urban areas in the Northeast."

But residents of the sparsely populated Big Island do not expect big-city pollution. Fur­the1more, many believe strongly that vog has harmed their health.

ing any definitive statements. ''The studies did not show any clear-cut asso­

ciation of vog affecting the respiratory status of any of the populations examined so far," says Edward Morgan, a lung specialist in Honolulu who leads a task force looking into the vog issue. Morgan believes that vog per se probably does not harm children, but it could potentially affect patients with underlying lung problems.

Further investigations could offer some answers, but locals should not hold their breaths. Harry Kim, head of the Civil Defense Agency on the island of Hawaii, has tried unsuccess­fully to gain support for more studies. "We have failed miserably," he says, "because we haven't been able to convince the Legislature and the local politicians that a hazard assess­ment must be done."

Kim says many have brushed aside the vog issue because the pollution comes from a nat­ural, uncontrollable source. No one can tum off the volcano or install exhaust-cleaning tech­nology, a remediation required for certain indus­trial polluters.

The World Wide Web (a.k.a. Web, WWW or W3) is an increasingly popular service on the Internet. The Web is one of many Internet services and grew out of a project started by Tun Bemers-Lee, who was employed at CERN, a physics lab in Switzerland. One of the goals of his project was to create a common method of information exchange for the Internet. The Web has enjoyed tremendous growth - esti­mated at 10 percent a month - in part due to the fact that it's relatively easy to use and is in "hypermedia" form: Clicking on highlighted text or graphics jumps the user to just about anywhere else on the Web.

For the average home user, the Web is less about computer technology and more about how people communicate. It's as easy to use as e-mail but can contain graphics, sound and even real-time video. It's a relatively simple

and cheap way to create a multimedia pre­sentation and have it continuously available. Small one-person businesses and large corpo­rations have already realized the marketing potential of having information accessible on line 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An URL (pronounced "Earl") stands for Uniform Resource Locator and is the unwieldy address system for the Web. For example, the URL for Bishop Museum's home page is "http:// www.bishop.hawaii.orgf' (without the quotes). Here sky watchers can access maps of Hawaii's night sky and link to Hawaii's observatories.

A random surf session at Hawaii's home pages reveals the diversity of the Web. Many pages include pictures of the Islands and point­ers to other places. You may start out looking for information about Maui but end up check­ing out pictures of Kauai, Molokai, Oahu and

Her page starts with a thumbnail-size close-up picture and a short autobiography. Then she lists the names and e-mail addresses of some of her Net teaching partners.

Clicking on these links opens windows through which to send e-mail to Joanne's list of Net collaborators. That's another handy thing about the Web: It can access other Inter­net services like e-mail, gopher, telnet, FTP and usenet newsgroups. Deeper into Joanne's Place is a list of links to "Educational Pages" such as Kids Web and other local schools on the Net.

Nobody expects the World Wide Web to be a substitute for reality. It can't replace the pink­tinged clouds hovering over Kahoolawe in the early-morning sky or the raucous cawing of the hundreds of nearby mynah birds. But the ease of access to overwhelming amounts of data - the information explosion - already has and will continue to alter the way we do business, seek entertainment, learn and com­municate with one another. •

Starting Tuesday and continuing through Friday, INET '95, the fifth annual conference of the Internet Society, will be booting up at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel and offering cyperspace explorers the opportunity to chat in real time with real people face to face. (What a concept.) The con­ference promises to be the ultimate newsgroup - with how big and fast-growing the Internet is, there shouldn't be a shortage of topics. But to help people along in their conversations is this year's theme, "The fnternet: Towards Global Information Infrastructure." Will 1 rumblings from Washington about reign­ing in the Internet, it should certainly be timely. However, when you're talking about the Internet, what isn't timely? Music madness As Dan Quayle so aptly put it, Hawaii is an island in the mid­

dle of the Pacific - and what better place to host an internation­al music festival? Unbeknownst to many here in the middle of the Pacific, around the time of the summer solstice, 80 countries worldwide are musically and spiritually linked through their participation in the International Fete de la Musique. Th.is year (the second in a row), Hawaii will plug into this rich current of global sound, metaphysically connecting to millions of audio dynamos visualtzing world beats.

f From Wednesday through Sunday, the Second Annual Hawail Make Musid Festival will drum its way between dif­ferent locations on Oahu, incorporating a variety of music into a synergistic buzz across the Island. Starting solstice evening at the Honolulu Zoo, the festival will pop up from Waikele to Waikiki, with two parades and over 90 featured musical events. Showcasing local talent, Make Musicl will have representatives of every continent, from Latino to European, Asian to Middle Eastem Visiting perfo!'llleJ;5 will be a Polish rock star and nation­al dancers.

While there will be perfonnances daily, the big mele is on Sun 6/25 with eight different stages on the lawn between Honolulu Hale and the Municipal Building. (Festivals in San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and St. Petersburg will be simulcast globally.) At least 60 groups will perform. Among them are Ballet Hawaii, contemporary-jazz musician Rodney Perez, Middle Eastern dancers Meda, alternative band Tone Deaf Teens, world-beat artist Lila Kane and the Waikiki Acrobatic Troupe. The 25th also has another major attraction: food. Oh, and a mayoral address.

It's brilliant, beautiful, audacious, truly original work that so fully explores the possibility of cinematic storytelling that it's probably going to leave many American movie audiences in the dark (every pun intended). Marfna Twins i Once Were Warriors The performance of Rena Owen as a Maori wife and mother trapped in an increasingly violent marriage is among the best you'll see this year and is matched by that ofTemurera Morrison as her volatile, anguished husband. The values that once served warriors are distorted grotesque­ly as a family's son joins a gang and another is taken into custody, leaving only a vulner­able daughter in the midst of the confusion of people who no longer feel themselves cen­tral in any world. Mainland critics (notoriously ignorant of Pacific cultures) have called this film overdone, but Hawaii audiences will know better. Kaha/a 8-P/ex Outbreak Dustin Hoffman stars as a scien­tist racing to find a cure to a deadly tropical virus brought to small-town America by a monkey. Things move along pretty well until Hoffman actually tracks down the infected primate, escapes an Army dragnet, cooks up a vaccine and stops the Air Force from drop­ping a disease- and people-incinerating bomb - all this before supper. Ring of Fire The history of volcanoes and earthquakes in the Pacific Rim is told in this explooive documentary. The lava footage shot here in Hawaii nei is spectacular; some of the other sequences seem like a waste of this big and loud format. IMAX Theatre Waikiki i The Secret of Roan lnlsh The plot is deceptively simple: Not properly cared for by a grieving widower father, young Fiona Keneely is sent to live with her grandparents, who reside in a small seacoast village in Ireland. Once there, Fiona is strangely drawn to a mysterious island that is barely visible from the shore. It's called Roan Inish ("isle of seals"), and it's the ancestral home of the Keneelys, a place her grandparents avoid talk­ing about in detail and refuse to return to. This may seem a little formulaic, and maybe it is. Yes, Fiona finds that there is something magical happening there, and her mission is to get her family to resettle on the island and exorcise some family demons. Early on in this film, your realize exacrly what's going to hap­pen and where you're headed. But that's OK. It's just nice to be in a film world where chil­dren don't have the souls of bitter adults and the adults aren't brain dead. It's nice to be in a place where innocence and curiousity don't die with knowledge - a place where you can see more clearly with a wide-eyed gaze. -D.K.C. Hemenway Theatre i Sanshlro Sugata (1943) An Akira Kurosawa film that, in context, was power­ful indeed. The title character, played by Susumu Fujita, is a gifted Judoist but is spir­itually lost. Qapanese audiences were ambiva­lent at the time.) However, it's clear to see that this is classic Kurosawa, examining dete­riorating codes of honor, some feudalistic, some more subrle. Highly recommended. With Takashi Shimura. Movie Museum i Talk of the Town (1942) Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman star in this George Stevens-directed comedy-drama. He'll con­fess to his Rich genes and the fact that his absentee dad not only didn't spend enough time with him, but he also drank too much and beat the crap out of him. Now Wayne acts out his neuroses by dressing up in black rub­ber and kicking some criminal ass. He really is a poor little rich boy. I only bring this up because I think the people who are responsible for the Batman epic will have to someday acknowledge their superhero's her­itage; they're going to have to face the fact that he was once a comic book character and an animated car­toon. Who knows, they might even admit to Adam West Until then we'll have inferior, humorless films. We'll have to put up with a Batman who is unnecessarily grim, glum and ugly, a Hollywood version of Lord Byron - a black wardrobe and a bad atti­tude.

The caped crusader, we are told, is the most complex and conflicted of the superheroes. (We're not talk­ing about some hayseed from Smallville here.) The story goes that Batman is a child of the city, born out of violence and nurtured on vengeance. As a young boy, Bruce watched helplessly as his parents were gunned down in a back alley. Just before the smoke cleared, he saw a fearsome bat fly by, and at that moment the young heir decided that one day he would take a similar form and make criminals live forever in fear. (Whew ! Can you imagine the marketing and costuming problems that would have emerged if he had seen something else, like, say, a cock­roach?)

If Batman is supposed to be so deep, why does he continually get so little screen time? In Batman Forever this trend continues with the bat guy again taking a back seat to the vil­lains. To the Joker, the Penguin and Catwoman, add Harvey Two-Face and the Riddler. As in the previous two films, the audience is subjected to long, senseless and plot-stealing introductions - the

The Riddler has invented a contrap­tion that hooks up to your television and takes control of your mind. There are a lot of noisy confrontations sprin­kled throughout the film which cul­minate - for no other reason than the movie has to end - with a big showdown on the Riddler's high-tech island.

Joker wasn't so pissed off until he got acid splashed in his face, the Penguin never got over growing up in a sewer, and the Catwoman had a nasty fall . In Batman Forever Harvey Two­Face (Tommy Lee Jones) is another acid accident victim, and the Riddler (Jim Carrey) is a former nerdy com­puter technician with low self-esteem. It is as if the filmmakers felt the audience needs rea­sons to believe that someone would dress up in a stupid costume and commit crimes. Excuse me, but we paid $6.50 to see a guy dress up in a stupid costume and.fight crime.

Yes, there's yet another personal introduction -Grayson is the only surviving member of the flying Graysons, a family of acrobats who perished while foil­ing Harvey Two­Face's plot to blow up the circus. Without a family or a place to stay, a sympathetic Bruce Wayne takes in the Boy Wonder and gives him toys. To offset any notions about any hanky­panky (they're just really, really close friends), the film­makers have popu­lated the movie with trophy women, one of whom is Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) a psychi­atrist who has a thing for guys with big psychoses.

Hawaii's highest award to a "local" writer with universal themes .

n the governor's office this Friday, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl (niece of the celebrated play-wright/ screenwriter John A. Kneubuhl) is sure to feel her cos­mos shift a bit when Ben Caeytano hands her the Hawaii

Award for Literature - awarded by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawaii Literary Arts Council - the highest honor of its kind in the state. Her name will be engraved with the great lit­erary sons and daughters of Hawaii, such as Milton Murayama, Cathy Song and Ozzie Bushnell. And then, just there, behind her noble, engag­ingly somber eyes, she will be remembering the moments that pro­pelled her to honor: all the plays she has crafted (like 1893, the Centennial production at lolani Palace, Ola Na lwi, Paniolo Spurs) and perhaps the accident that first veered her into a life in the theater.

One semester, while still forging a B.A. in psychology from UH, Victoria hoped to fill a humanities elective with a course in creative writ­ing from the English Department. The course was full. Searching for alternative course offerings, her eyes lighted upon a course in play­wrighting taught by Bernard Dukore. And so her adventure began.

"I hated it," remembers Victoria, "Frankly, I wasn't very good at it. I wanted to drop the course. That is, I seriously considered it. But then I decided that Dukore was a very good teacher and one way or another I would probably learn something from him despite what my grade may be." Her writing improved, however. She decided to take the advanced play­wrighting course from Dennis Carroll (now chairman of the Department of Theater and Dance at UH). Under Carroll's burning love of theater, her talent blossomed.

According to Carroll, Kneubuhl's work from the very beginning "demonstrated a remarkable talent, a rhythmic quality, a spareness. Most writers spend a lot of words to get to something, but her work said a great deal with very little." Lyn Ackermann, the wizard behind the Lizard Loft

enterprises, who helped vote the award to Kneubuhl (and actually per­formed in her very first play, a one­act called Veranda Dance), says that Kneubuhl "writes very multifaceted characters with many layers of under­standing. From the first, she respect­ed the actor's job to discover and flesh out a piece."

Kneubuhl's first full-length play, Emma Lehua, nearly crushed her. Her uncle, who had come from Samoa to direct her play, comman­deered the direction of its progress. And his decisions about its realiza­tion were not hers. She remembers sadly, '1 finally decided being a niece was more important than being a playwright. I could always write another play, but I couldn't get anoth­er uncle. I felt pretty mashed after that experience."

However, she continued to write. While working at the Mission Houses Museum, she began to be enchant­ed by history. Both Kaiulani and the Coversion of Kaleomanu dealt with the missionaries and the resulting identity crises they wrought on Hawaii, and Kumu Kahua Theatre toured both plays throughout the state.

It's natural that this local woman would write about Polynesian iden­tity and a woman's search for self, but when pegged as a "woman's voice" or the "voice of Hawaii," she cringes. "I can't take that responsi­bility. I am responsible to my own voice."

Sense of the self and the music of words are two elements that distin­guish Victoria Kneubuhl's work. Evident in her early work and cen­tral to her recent plays (like Ola Na lwi, a play about stealing Hawaiian ancestral remains from a museum and burying them properly) is the confrontation with self. But her uni­verse is gentle and benign. A spiri­tual grace infuses all her worlcs. Even when the supernatural doesn't direct­ly intervene, at least propitious chance, serendipity or perhaps sim­ply the goodwill of God pushes her characters in front of a mirror.

And all her work is music. "I have the least trouble with dialogue and putting the sound of words together. It's like tapping your foot; after a while the character, the sense, just carries me." With a guilty chuckle,

she confesses she talks to herself a lot. "My husband thinks I'm crazy. I'll be working in the kitchen, recit­ing Portia's speech on mercy by Shakespeare, just for the beautiful sound of it" She devours poetry and books, insatiably searching for a new turn of phrase, a new flower in the ancient garden of language. But she's not a selfish gardener; she dis­plays her aural bouquets for all Hawaii to enjoy.

"I just want to tell stories," she says. ''Theater will always possess this certain element of gathering in the dark around a fire, telling stories. This is very Polynesian. It's there we can break a hole in the world and let the other side enlighten us."

You know, sometimes good peo­ple do win. Congratulations, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl. •

Hide the resting place with rocks and branches, hide it so only the birds know where I am, and then, leave me. Leave me in the breathing, beating heart of my beloved 'aina. I will lie there quiet­ly in the darkness, and in the dark­ness I will hear them coming. I will hear the long slow sound of the conch, the steady beat of the pahu and then creaking of the manele swaying back and forth and back and forth. I will feel their footsteps shaking the air, and stretching out, I will see the endless, winding pro­cession of torches and then, the faces of every loved one gone before me. And one will leave the great line and slowly come toward me, and bend­ing over so softly she calls back, "Stop and wait, for here is one of our own, come home to us at last."

illions of users world­wide, all neatly self­organized by their interests - you'd think the Internet was a gift straight from God to big business, a vast frontier

begging to be plundered by huge cor­porations, especially those in the con-summately cutting-edge music industry. But even though major labels are starting to stick their innu­merable little fingers into the elec­tronic pot, the Net is still mostly anarchic in nature. It's still basical­ly a bunch of people yammering on about all kinds of different . . . stuff.

An inordinate amount of that yam­mering concerns itself with music, which makes the Net the perfect place to expand your bootleg collection, catch juicy (and usually untrue) gos­sip, even book your band's tour. Going on line is fast becoming the independent musician's tactic of choice in building a solid, support­ive music community.

E-mail and Usenet The simplest, most common online

tools are e-mail and Usenet. These are probably the most useful in mak­ing contacts, too.

Usenet comprises more than 8,000 subject-grouped, publicly accessible bulletin boards, or newsgroups, hun­dreds of which are dedicated to musi­cal topics. There are broad-based, high-traffic ones like alt.music.alter­native, where debates over the true meaning of the a-word and geek-boy odes to Tori Amos and Tanya Donnelley add up to thousands of messages a week. And there are oth­ers that haven't seen any action in ages. AOL and CompuServe have their own groups in addition to the Usenet access they provide.

Certain groups are particularly use­ful to musicians simply because they put you in touch with other musi­cians. Alt.punk and alt.music.hard­core are good places to hook up with promoters, distributors, writers and DJs all over the world. Browse through 'zine announcements or plug your own on alt.zines. Where's the rave? Someone on alt.rave will def­initely know. The rec.arts.music-mak­ers groups (separate ones for different instruments) can be helpful if you have a technical question.

Or you can just hang out on one of the Green Day groups (alt.music. green-day and alt .music.green­day.sucks - traffic is 'about equal) and be obnoxious. Your favorite band might very well have a group of its own; check it out for bootleg trades, tabs, lyrics and the occasional long,

rambling rant of a fan in the throes of epiphany.

Besides newsgroups, there are also countless mailing lists, which func­tion like groups but deliver each mes­sage directly to each list member's mailbox. Mailing lists are put togeth­er when a topic is too narrow to war­rant its own newsgroup or when lists want to limit their membership. For example, the riot grrrl list is all female, something that could never happen on a standard, unmoderated newsgroup.

Some quick Usenet hints: try to hang out ( or "lurk") on a group or list until you get a feel for what's going on there, or else you'll prob­ably say something stupid and take all kinds of grief for it. If you're on, say, the Nirvana group, don't respond to people who say "Kurt Cobain sucks" because it's just not worth the effort; and please, don't feel like you have to jump on the smiley face : ) bandwagon. Flame wars can be fun but time-consuming, so choose your battles carefully.

Other protocols Newsgroups and mailing lists can

help you make valuable connections, and they can also point you to other sources of information, like File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sites from which you can copy text or graph­ics files to your machine. Once you have the software, you can get addresses from newsgroups and download lyrics, discographies, arti­cles, electronic 'zines, shareware pro­grams or photographs. Thousands of files are available on thousands of computers; search programs like Archie can help you find what you're looking for.

Probably the fastest-growing seg­ment of the Internet is the World Wide Web (WWW), which allows users to access video, audio and text clips in real time. Sites are made up of pages, and pages are all inter­connected through keywords; you can zoom straight from a page on a site in California to one supported by a machine in Germany, then zoom right back. Many labels have pages of their own where they post infor-mation about their bands, and sin�e anyone can hook up, WWW is the most equitable marketing tool to date. Sony has its own site ; so does SubPop.

One of the Net's standout offer­ings is the Internet Underground Music Archive (I.U.M.A.), a WWW site where you can hear songs, read bios and check out Addicted to Noise, a widely acclaimed electronic 'zine. I.U.M.A. is adored by many, but some label owners who paid the ser­vice fees to have pages created for their bands complain that the pro-

motion service is too big to really work for unknowns.

The Internet itself is not a com­mercial entity (yet), but AOL and CompuServe are; consequently, music industry muscle is more appar­ent in their services. AOL has an entire area devoted to materials pro­. vided by Warner Bros., including the recent, staggeringly complex, inter­active press kit for R.E.M.'s Monster. AOL also schedules on-line chat ses­sions with famous people like Joan Jett and Me'Shell Ndegeocello. Industry giants rub shoulders in CompuServe's Music Industry Forum, but their Rocknet provides all kinds of message areas, includ­ing a popular one for unsigned bands.

Using the Internet can drastically reduce the grunt work involved in booking tours, promoting shows, dis­tributing releases, just about any­thing. And you never know who's out there: I myself have hooked up with tremendously cool 'zine edi­tors, Rolling Stone writers, even an altruistic software engineer who sent me $400 just because. I have also taken huge amounts of grief from cowards who live to perform snivel- _ ing little misanthropic deeds from behind their computer screens. Like anything else, the Net is only as cool as the people who use it. Scout around a few choice groups and you're likely to find something that makes the mountains of manure worth wading through.

Useful addresses • alt.music.alternative: A good

place to find out about mailing lists and FTP sites, general info like tour schedules and release dates, and lots of silly messages you'll want to scroll right past.

• alt .fan.courtneylove: Always interesting, sometimes unbearably so. Courtney shows up a couple times a month to spil l her guts, and, whether you like her or not, her posts (and the responses to them) are fas­cinating.

• alt.guitar: Everything you ever wanted to know about your frets.

• alt.punk and alt.music.hardcore: Lots of contacts; ask about the tremendously cool punk mailing list when you get there.

• al t .music.independent : Show reviews, info on new releases, etc. Less sniping about "what is indie?" than you might expect.

• rec.music.bluenote: Lots of infor­mation and reminiscing.

• rec.music.funky, rec.music.coun­try, rec.music.dylan: Depending on what you like. Members of news­groups will be able to help you find WWW sites, FTP sites and mailing lists.

The Olive Tree is back and with it real Greek food -healthful and quick ( not fast) .

o to any Greek restaurant and you'll be overwhelmed by heavy dishes: dense moussakas, gooey baklavas and salads drenched in oil and feta cheese. These fatty dishes make it hard to

believe Greeks have the lowest rates of heart disease and cancer in Europe. According to Savas Mojarrad, the force behind the Olive Tree, real Greek food is fat conscious, choles­terol conscious and cooked quickly. What Americans call Greek food consists mostly of celebration meals, a diet so rich that no Greek would eat it every day.

Mojarrad, who ran a similar restau­rant on Ala Moana over a decade ago, recently opened the Olive Tree in the Kahala Mall. Like most store owners, Mojarrad surely means to both tempt and satisfy, but he will risk challenging his audience. Sandwiched between a McDonald's and a Subway, he serves anything but standard mall fare at close to fast­food prices.

The motto of the Olive Tree is "mostly Greek . . . not so fast food," and the menu is extremely short and changes frequently. Mojarrad is con­tent to focus on what he knows and to do it really well for a much small­er audience. In a quest to ensure qual­ity, he import<; most of his ingredients from the Mainland, buying only fish and produce from the Islands.

On the night I ate there with a few friends, we started with Avgolemono soup ($2), made with chicken stock, lemon, egg, Japanese cucumber and dill. The soup was subtle, fresh and hearty. Even the member of our party

who disliked dill enjoyed the soup tremendously. On many nights Mojarrad instead serves a lamb-and­lentil soup.

Of course, we followed that with a Greek Salad (Horiatiki) ($4.80 a bowl and more than enough for two) that revealed the chef's light hand. My friends, who had not consumed fresh Mainland produce recently, liked the salad more than I. The dish was fine, but only the feta cheese stood out. Dinners come with small side salads, i.e., the Greek salad absent feta. Another appetizer is the Tabuli ($4.80).

The main courses we sampled included three varieties of Souvlaki: Chicken ($6.72), Lean Lamb ($7.44) and Fresh Fish ($6.96). Souvlaki is essentially a pita sandwich filled with the grilled meat or fish of your choosing and a light marinade. The fish and lamb were superior, with the chicken only slightly less good. The portions were large, with sauces separately prepared for each dish, and the quality was what one would expect at twice the price. When we arrived after 8 :30, they had run out of Spanakopita ($6.72), spinach pie.

When you go to the Olive Tree, check the baklava tray on the counter. If they're running out, claim some immediately. Otherwise, one of the takeout customers may snatch the last piece. The Baklava ($ 1 .86) was incredibly light and tasty with a dis­tinctive hint of lemon and pistachio. Most baklava is either mushy, over­run with nuts or far too sweet. The Olive Tree's Baklava is the kind you could eat twice a week without hesitation.

at the counter, sit at one of the small tables, either inside or out (parties of more than four will probably have to divide) and wait to pick up your own food. Bring your own booze, although Mojarrad will surely advise you on an appropriate wine if you call ahead.

As good as the food is, Mojarrad's presence makes the atmosphere even better. He never stops talking to his favorite customers, asking their opin­ions of various dishes and regaling them with stories. He told me that he envisioned the Olive Tree as a Greek bistro and then explained that word's origins. Russian soldiers occu­pied Paris late in the 1 9th century. When they ate out in cafes, they often demanded their food be served faster. The Russian word for faster sounds like "bistro," et voila!

When I talked to Mojarrad after the meal, he worried that it was too early to judge his 3-month-old res­taurant because the menu would expand and keep changing. Perhaps so, but the Olive Tree already serves one of the best reasonably priced dinners on the island. The Olive Tree is back; the promise of more and better things in the future should not preclude us from announcing the return of one of Honolulu's excel­lent restaurants. •

In the film In the Line of Fire, John Malkovich plays an ex-C!A-oper­ative-tumed-psychopathic-assas­sin who manufactures a gun made out of polymer or some kind of

plastic compound. He 's able to smug­gle the disassembled gun into a fund­raising dinner for the president because the gun doesn 't set off the metal detectors. (The bullets he con­ceals inside a rabbit 'sjoot key ring.) It 's a terrific movie, but l did won­der whether the Secret Service 's sat­isfaction in seeing a film in which they are portrayed heroically (in the person of Clint Eastwood) was off­set by the horror of the training-.film­for-assassins details featured. ls it in fact possible to make or buy a non­metal gun similar to the one in the film that is capable of firing bullets with sufficient force to kill? -David English, Somerville, Mass.

Been answering a lot of gun ques­tions lately, haven't I? But the topic does seem to have a certain contin­uing relevance. So far as is known - known to the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms bureau, any­way - no gun made entirely of plas­tic is currently available. The closest thing is probably something like the Glock 17, an Austrian-made auto­matic pistol that has some plastic parts, including the grip and trigger guard. Training is required to rec­ognize a disassembled Glock on an X-ray scanner. But it's still 83 per­cent metal by weight.

Are all-plastic weapons feasible? Some think it's only a matter of time. In 1986 Congress's Office of Tech­nology Assessment reported that a 99 percent nonmetallic gun might someday be made using composite plastics, with metal used only for springs. In 1988 a small Florida com­pany called Red Eye Arms claimed it was going to have a prototype plas­tic grenade launcher ready in 1 8 to 24 months. Congress got so spooked by the publicity about plastic weapons, even theoretical ones, that it banned their production in the United States. Whether that scared off Red Eye or whether they were just hustling the gun-industry equiv­alent of vaporware, I don't know, but I can't locate the company now.

But why sweat plastic guns? The real threat is plastic bombs, which do exist and which have been used in numerous acts of terrorism. most

land. The Pan Am bomb consisted of 10 pounds of the Czech-made plas­tic explosive Semtex crammed into a radio-cassette player. A chemical marker is now added to Semtex and other such explosives to enable them to be detected by airport security devices. But years ago the former communist rulers of Czechoslovakia shipped 1 ,000 tons of marker-free Semtex to Libya, the L.L. Bean of international terrorism. The original recipe is undetectable except by high­tech gizmos that are too expensive to install at every airport (though a new detector that promises to be reli­able and maybe cheaper is now being tested). In short, the bad guys can't yet use plastic weapons to kill the president. But they can use them to kill you.

Where did the word "Great" come from in the official title "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ire­land"? When and why did

Well, I guess it's less of a mouth­ful than Formerly Great Britain or Still Pretty Good Britain, which are the other obvious choices. But the fact is, things will really have to go to pieces before the Brits will be obliged to drop the "Great'' from their country's name. Originally the island was called Britain, period, but the name dropped out of common use after the masses coalesced into the separate kingdoms of England and Scotland and the principality of Wales. It was revived as part of efforts to unify the island in the 16th cen­tury, with the inevitable PR types appending the word ''Great'' to make the objective sound a little more grandiose. James I, who was also James VI of Scotland, unified the thrones of England and Scotland and had himself proclaimed king of Great Britain in 1604. The term became official with the Act of Union in 1707.
