LAND OWNERS HAVE

GOOD WORK DEINQDONE. ' r

A short time ago tho Kona SugarCompany was convalescent. Thencame a period when tho ostate wason tho high road to recovery and today comes the news that a permanenteuro has been effected.

Among tho passengers from Konaiu'the Mauna Loa today was ClintonJ Hutchins, the real estate man, whoIr. Interested In tho Kona Sugar Com-pany. Ho had the following to Bay toa Bulletin reporter this morning:

"Kona Is a good proposition asgood as anything In tho Islands. Thtrill? Well, there are people who fullIt a scrap heap, but I want to tell youthat that very samo scrap heap turn-ed out 333 bags of sugar one day lastweek while i was In Kona and It quitat that because thcro was no morecane.

in tho matter of tho leases withwhich the plantation has been tl-- d

t'p, I would state that the s

of Kona have met us halt way andhi.vc shown a most admirable spirit. They want to see tho plantation prosper and to this end they havo agreedto reduce the rents and the, acreage ofhinds now under lease to the plantsHon. Wo will go along on the samorents up to January 1 of1 next year, when wo will enter Into tho nowagreements. The leases at tbo pres-ent time aro for various periods, butmost of tho new leases at reducedrates, will be for fifty years.

"Yesterday, tho plantation beganon two new fields, one of 213 and onoof 350 acres and tbo calculation Isthat about 250 bags a day will be thorecord until theso fields have beencleared.

'The 1903 crop will net about 1,500tons and, on account of tho recent dif-ficulties, there will bo nothing In1904. In 1905, thcro wilt bo 713 acresof plant and rat toons; In 1906, C40

acres of the same, and 1907, accordingto tho present calculations, there willbo 1,100 acres of plant and rattooncane.

"We aro free from all Incumbrancesand havo 2,250, acres of cleared landthat Is ready to be planted. On theettato aro all tho buildings, roadr, railroads, mill, cleared land, horses, mules, wagons, harness, flumes, wireropes for trolleylng cane, cane carland all other paraphernalia. Alt wehavo to do Is to go ahead and wo canmake the placo as small or as largeas we desire. It Is calculated- thatwith tne expenditure of from 1200,000to $260,000 we should bo able In fouryears' time to make the Kona SugarCompany a. 6,000-to- n plantation."

Informal official Inquiries have fol-

OFFICIALS AND CONVENTION

There Is a, lot of talk In Republicancircles Just now with reference toGovernment officials runnjng for thoCounty Convention, which body willravu as its most Important huslnessthe choice of men to fill the variouscounty offices. It U contended byscmo of the most prominent Hepublt-n-

leaders that It would be distinctlywrong for Government officials tohave a say as to the one? who shalltake tho county offices. At the lastelection, officials were forbidden fromtaking part In politics with the one exceptlon of voting, and it is quite likelythat the same kind of an order will beItsued by the Executive at the comingcounty elections. This matter willvery probably come up at the meetingof the executive committee of the Hepublican party which has been flnnounced for tomorrow night.
