TAPIO HARVESTER HEADS

For the past 8 years ABS have been supplying Tapio Harvester Heads to the forestryindustry. We have mainly supplied heads to contractors involved in Skyline/Roadsideprocessing, although many have been supplied to general harvesting contractors. Prior toABS supplying 600EXS heads, many Tapio 400s were already working in forests aroundthe country. The Tapio 600EXS has been the favoured head in the range due to itsimproved specification and increased delimbing power. The main advantages of the Tapio600EXS are the combination of low cost, ease of operation and ease of maintenance, allowing many contractors new to the mechanical harvesting sector to gain a foothold inthis market.

Various bases have been used to mount Tapio heads, rangeing from tracked bases,6-14 tons, to various wheeled bases depending on working conditions.

Valmet 360/370– harvester heads withbuilt-in intelligence

A thoroughly systematic approach

runs like a red thread through our

entire product range. All details of

our products are optimized in rela-

tion to one another, and the various

products are designed to be the

market’s most efficient combined

solution for their task. This thor-

oughly researched whole offers

you maximum operating reliability,

high capacity and low operating and

maintenance costs. Among other

things. You will notice this holistic

approach particularly clearly in

relation to our harvester heads.

These harvester heads come into

their element when combined

with our machines and the Maxi-

Harvester control system. And they

give you what matters in the end –

more money left over.

We are constantly pushing out the boundaries as

far as providing you with conditions for increased

efficiency is concerned. One noticeable result of our

efforts is the harvester heads in our new 300-series.

As you will come to appreciate, they represent a

uniquely innovative approach in many respects,

although all our products share the same underly-

ing idea: to make your operation as efficient as

possible.

For this reason, the 360 and 370 harvester heads

have been provided with built-in intelligence con-nected to your Maxi computer inside the cab. This

makes the 300 series the world’s first fully inte-

grated, intelligent harvester heads. This gives you

significantly greater control than previously over

the harvester head, and thus over the final result.

Simple settingsYou make your own settings for the rate of feed,

roller pressure, knife pressure, cross-cutting, etc.,

via a simple screen in your user-friendly Maxi

computer, without even leaving the cab. The key

lies in the harvester head’s own computer unit,

which is encapsulated and well protected insidethe harvester head, and its communication with

the MaxiHarvester control system. This is the

systematic approach from Valmet at its best.

The easier it is to make adjustments to the har-

vester head’s functions, the better adapted the

harvester heads are to every situation. This bene-

fits the final result. A result which puts money

straight into your wallet.

Simpler service

The new, unique design of the 300 series locates

all the vital parts together and readily accessible

under the harvester head cover. The compact

design increases the resistance to wear and facil-

itates servicing. The harvester heads now also

have a broader felling link, which stabilizes fellingat the same time as it provides increased accessi-

bility for servicing. The double-acting felling cylin-

ders give you the best possible control over the

felling operation. The traditional rotator has also

been replaced by a slew ring with a floating posi-

tion function controlled by the diameter.

As a general rule, all the bushes are now sealed to

minimize the contamination that finds its way into

the bearings. Adjustable expansion pins are fitted

at all exposed points. This reduces wear, brings down

maintenance costs and increases availability.

The Valmet 360 and 370 are packed with a prop-erly thought-out mixture of long experience and

new technology, which makes these harvester

heads our most powerful ever. With high capacity

and high availability, yet low operating and main-

tenance costs.

Valmet 360 gives a newmeaning to ”all-round”

For many people, the everyday

reality of the forest presents them

with jobs with different charac-

teristics. The importance of hav-

ing versatile working implements

can thus never be valued suffi-

ciently highly.

For a long time, we at Valmet have

sought to include alternatives in

our product range to offer this

versatility. In the machinery area,

you will find this approach both

on the harvester side and on the

forwarder side. But there is also

versatility in the design of our

harvester heads. The Valmet 360

harvester head is flexible and well

adapted to both the Valmet 911

and Valmet 921.

The art of creating versatility is

to strike an appropriate balance

between size, strength and weight.

No one is better aware of this than

our customers. This dialogue also

provides the basis for our new

360 – our most versatile harvester

head ever.

Although the new model 360 all-round harvester

head is full of new technology, efficiency and

simplicity in many respects, at the same time

its concept is based on our previous successfulharvester heads. Just like its predecessors, it

draws on Valmet’s tried and tested principles

of load-carrying, cam-operated feed rollers

supported on linkages. The inclination of the feed

roller to the log is optimized here in every position.

We have retained this solution simply because

there is no better way of creating optimal stem

holding.

This is also where the similarities end. The 360

incorporates many innovations. New technologyand new solutions mean that the 360 represents

an entirely new generation of harvester heads.

Higher productionFor example, diameter measurement is now per-

formed with digital correction of both front

knives, which gives even more exact measure-

ment. The feed roller motors can be supplied intwo different sizes with single-speed and two-

speed models (option). In the latter case, the

log is started off in a powerful low gear, and the

motor then changes up automatically according

to pre-set values. Higher speed gives two advan-

tages – better limbing and higher production.

The linkage systems for the limbing knives and the

feed rollers have different pivot centres. This

smart solution means that the knives are better

adapted to the log and that the harvester headobtains an equally firm grip on large and small logs.

Both the limbing knives and the feed roller clamp-

ing pressure are adapted automatically to the

dimension of the log by the built-in intelligence.

The larger the log, the harder the harvester head

clamps.

The length measurement wheel is hydraulicallyregulated and is applied at the start of processing.

The feed roller chains are tensioned automatically

as the rubber rollers wear, thanks to a new and

precise design. At the same time, the entire feed

roller does not need to be replaced when the time

comes, but only the rubber wearing part. This

lowers the maintenance costs.

The good stem holding and measurement of the

360 combine to give both high productivity and a

high quality of cross-cutting.

Intelligent cross-cutting controlA new and more powerful saw motor with com-

puter-controlled chain speed gives increased effi-

ciency. Valmet’s patented chain tensioner automati-

cally releases the chain, and chain replacement

can be performed entirely without tools.

The cross-cutting control and the guide bar feedare connected to the diameter measurement. The

computer regulates the guide bar speed depend-

ing on the diameter, and completes cross-cutting

when the right diameter is reached. This minimizes

the risk of cutting into rocks. At the same time, the

ability of the ECO-oiler to achieve the least possible

wastage by matching the quantity of chain oil to

the cross-cutter unit’s needs is good for both the

economy and the environment.

Its high capacity and its ability to handle bothlarge and small logs efficiently make the Valmet

360 the perfect all-round harvester head. For every

task from late thinning to final felling.

Valmet 370– an obvious choicefor the heaviest felling

The Valmet 370 is designed for final felling in heavy

and hard-to-limb forest. And its aim is to make this

felling as efficient as possible.

This is why the design of the harvester head is

based on the principles that have made earlier

generations of Valmet harvester heads so highly

appreciated for their efficiency. At the same time,

we have introduced a proportion of innovativethinking to ensure that the 370 is not only our

largest, but also our most productive harvester

head ever. In spite of this, the design is still remark-

ably neat and manoeuvrable.

Like its siblings in earlier generations of harvester

heads, the 370 is based on load-carrying, cam-

operated feed rollers suspended on linkages. This

gives optimal stem holding thanks to the optimized

inclination of the feed roller to the log in every

position. Apart from the five limbing knives, which

have come to represent something of a Valmet

standard, the 370 also has a sixth knife.

The four main knives are hydraulically controlled

with individual pressure setting via the control

system. The fifth limbing knife is spring-loaded, and

the sixth knife is fixed – all of which is intended to

ensure that the knives have the best arc of contact.

Handles all logsFor the highest productivity, the Valmet 370 can be

supplied as a two-speed model (option). The log isstarted using a powerful low gear, and the motor

then changes up automatically according to pre-

set values. This gives two major advantages –

better limbing and higher production.

The different pivot centres for the linkage systems

of the limbing knives and feed rollers enable the

knives to adapt better to the log, and the harvester

The heaviest felling imposes

quite special requirements on

equipment. There is no room for

any compromises. That is why the

new Valmet 370 is one expression

of our desire to create the market’s

most efficient harvester head in

all categories.

The Valmet 370 was thus adapted

from the outset for our largest

harvester, the Valmet 921, and is

designed to cope with the really

large stems in the forest. This

harvester head is not just a larger

version of the Valmet 360, but a

harvester head with a range of

entirely unique features.

The result was not long in coming.

Valmet 370 harvester head is the

market’s most efficient harvester

unit in a class of its own.

head can thus hold even the very largest logs in a

firm grip without problem. The control system also

adapts automatically the clamping force of the

limbing knives and feed rollers with reference tothe dimensions of the log.

Good measurement in combination with good

stem holding are a guarantee of both high produc-

tivity and quality of cross-cutting.

Thanks to their smart design, the feed roller chains

are tensioned automatically as the rubber rollers

wear. At the same time, the feed roller as a wholedoes not need to be replaced when the time

comes, but only the rubber that is a wearing part.

No cutting into rocksThe 370 has a new and more powerful saw motor.

Efficiency is increased thanks to the computer-

controlled chain speed, and Valmet’s patented

chain tensioner automatically releases the chain

for easier chain replacement. Without using any

tools. The harvester head copes with guide bar

lengths of up to 82.5 cm. The cross-cutting control

and the guide bar feed are linked to the diameter

measurement. This allows the computer to con-

trol the guide bar speed depending on the diame-ter, and cross-cutting is thus completed once

exactly the right diameter has been reached. This

minimizes the risk of cutting into rocks.

During cross-cutting, the ECO-oiler matches thequantity of lubricating oil to the needs of the cross-

cutter unit.

One fact is clear when all these features are com-bined: the Valmet 370 is a harvester head for the

very heaviest felling. And for those who place

high demands on efficiency, productivity and

profitability.

From the forest. To the drawing board.

Efficiency is, and will always be, a critical factor in logging operations.

The Cut-To-Length method, in which the stem is cut into logs directly

at the felling site, is the most efficient felling method available. That

is why all our technology and all our solutions have long been based

on Cut-To-Length.

Once you have decided in favour of Cut-To-Length,

you will naturally also want the most efficient felling

tools. This is where Valmet’s harvester head enters

the picture.

All our harvester heads fell, limb and cross-cut the

stem in a single sequence. You avoid having to line

up the trees and make unnecessary movements,

which saves you time – and money.

Valmet were pioneers in the development of the

felling head. We have thus accumulated experience

of the practical application of efficient felling over a

long time. We have refined this experience with the help of modern

computer-aided design technology. The result is our new, S-2 series

of heads. Three heads. Three different sizes. Each adapted to its own

special task.

The Valmet S-2 represents almost 20 years’ experience gained

from felling forests in every corner of the world. This is experience

that shows.

Valmet S-2 heads are full of clever technical solutions, all of which

fill the need for the most efficient felling possible and produce the

best possible financial return for you.

The stem is supported by feed rollers in our heads,

rather than by the limbing knives, as is the case in

competitors’ heads. The feed rollers are in turn sus-

pended on cam curves, which vary the inclination of

the rollers in relation to the diameter of the log. This

means that our heads are able to hold thicker, and

thus heavier, logs in place without having to clamp the

log by hydraulic means. Thanks to our solution, the

head has lower friction and thus a higher

processing speed. The stem also ends

up in the same position every time,

which is a prerequisite for exact

length and diameter measure-

ment and the basis for

correct volume recording.

All Valmet’s heads have five limbing knives, each

one computer-designed to give maximum enclosure

of the stem regardless of the dimension of the log.

The fifth knife is movable, which means that our

heads can also limb curved stems with perfect results.

This is also important for length measurement by the

head, because it clears away the limbs ahead of the

measuring wheel, which then measures on a well-

limbed path.

Our experience can also be seen clearly in the

design of the S-2 heads. These are innovative solu-

tions, but with a simplicity that maximizes operating

reliability. The design of the saw box, for example,

allows the heads to handle stems with different shapes

and leave a low stump height. The small number of

cylinders in the heads makes them reliable. The cylinders are also

well protected inside the head. Their positioning means that all the

forces seek to draw the head together, rather than forcing it apart –

to the benefit of its durability. The neat design of the heads also

makes them simple to maintain and service.

Clever technology.For maximum efficiency.

Powerful saw and feed motorsfor efficient processing.

A small number of well pro-tected cylinders for operatingreliability and durability.

Heavily dimensionedsuspension link.

A chain is never stronger than its weakest link, as they say. Although

this is an old saying, it no less relevant today. In relation to our busi-

ness, it simply means that the head must match the machine and

the crane which supports it. This is why our heads are designed to

be supported by all types of carrier, from excavators to specially

designed forestry machines.

They are also designed for use in all types of felling situations.

To make this possible, our designers combined our many years of

experience with the latest technology in the form of computer-aided

design and high-strength materials. Every detail is precisely executed

to perform its job, and its strength is dimensioned according to the

actual load on the component. This means that no details need be

over-dimensioned. Our harvester heads are short, light, flexible and

rapid as a result, and yet at the same time precisely as strong as

they need to be.

The Valmet S-2 gives highly efficient felling and production, in

return for the lowest possible fuel consumption and load on the

environment. This means that the Valmet S-2 gives the best possible

total economy.

Adapted details.A strong whole.

CharacteristicsThe harvester heads are rotator-mounted for directional felling, limbing andcross-cutting. The feed rollers are mounted on cam-operated link arms. The heads have five separate limbing knives.

The Waratah HTH260 hydraulic tree harvesteris in many respects a completely new productdeveloped to meet market demands. The basicconcept though, reflects our experience withover 1,000 units in this size class. The HTH260is equipped with a new type of wheel motor forefficient tree feeding. The cutting diameter hasbeen increased to 25.6-in (650 mm) to handlebigger trees and lower stumps. The position ofthe saw motor has been changed to simplify thefelling of the trees. A fast cutting cycle reduces

the risk of cracks in valuable logs. The lowerdelimbing arms are sharpened on both sides.Combined with the lower position of the fixedknife, this enables the operator to delimb whenreversing the stem. A new valve block and theimproved quality of components and hosesincrease the reliability and productivity of thehead. The Waratah harvester head is meant forthinnings of larger trees and for regenerationharvesting operations. The HTH260 is designedfor use with large wheel harvesters.

F E A T U R E S• These newly designed disc saw heads are made

for small timber. They are the perfect match for feller bunchers equipped with long reach booms orsmaller feller bunchers with limited payload capacity.

• "Arms up" design uses one 3-1/2” cylinder and heavy-duty timing bar per set of arms. This design adds simplicity to the hydraulics and offersa weight savings over Quadco’s conventional “arms down” design.

• Optional 360° wrist system using field-proven double reduction gear box and two high torque motors. Hundreds of similar systems already in the field in various conditions throughout North America. Depth of only 5-5/8” to minimize the effect to the machine balance. Motors and gearinglocated top center to optimize operator visibility.

• New rotate bearing designed with wear resistant material hardened to 60 Rockwell to resist high axial and bending loads. Replaceable wear plate.

• Wide saw base with 37” throat opening and up to 4.0 sq.ft. accumulation pocket.

• Hydraulic lines routed through center of head to reduce hose hang-ups often found with longer hose loops required with 360° wrists. Nylon protection ring located on the back of the main head weldment to minimize hose wear.

• Cost-efficient Quadco disc with replaceable bolt-on tooth holders and four-sided rotatable QuadTooth®.

• Recommended as carrier equipment with 360° wrist is a power link for maximum versatility and component life. An optional Quadco-supplied/carrier-mounted float valve allows wrist and tool cylinder functions to free float, limiting structural stresses in wrist and boom components when bunching.

● Right sized bunches for single pass pick-up by skidder

● Less travel saves wear on both skidder and feller buncher, lowers fuel costs and increases system productivity

● Site disturbance kept to minimum, less planting required

● Easy pick-up of scattered wood, excellent in blowdown

Full 220º rotation – less travel, higher productivity, bigger bunches

FG18 •FG22 High Rotation Felling Heads

Timberjack

As flexible as giant hands, theFG18 and FG22 heads with 220ºwrist rotation can be positioned anywhere you want, for faster cutting and bunching without moving the feller buncher. Larger, right sized bunches reduce the number of bunches per cut block, all positioned for fast pick-up by a grapple skidder. In turn, the skidder takes a full load from each bunch, instead of backing up to gather two or three smallerbunches. Your two-machine systemis more productive all the way to the landing, with much less site disturbance.

Big bunches begin with bigaccumulation. The wide throat opening, large accumulation area and high rotationcapability make it easy to cut andgather up to eight small stemsbefore bunching. The high rotationfeature enables bunching at fullboom reach to both sides of themachine, so each bunch is accumu-lated and stacked without movingthe machine. The 220º wrist rotation allows bunches to be placed in parallel rows for single-path skidding to the landing. Thistwo into one felling pattern greatlyreduces site disturbance.

Save time and travel from the cut to the landing.

Flexibility of head position alsoallows fast pick-up of stray trees, or laying stems across the forwardpath of the machine for traction, orquick salvage in blowdown.

Forest-friendly full tree logging. The reduction in travel, especiallyby the skidder, reduces soil compaction and rutting. The downstream advantages of a high rotation felling head extend to theprotection of natural regeneration, and the system has proved benefi-cial in careful logging aroundadvanced growth. Post-harvestplanting can be minimal or, onsome sites, eliminated altogether.

Lower maintenance costs.Reduction in travel by both thefeller buncher and the skiddermeans less wear on their drive-trains, lower fuel consumption and increased overall productivity.

Reliable wrist rotation system. 110º rotation to each side is accom-plished by a unique twin cylindergear drive mechanism. This simple

design offers greater reliability andlower maintenance than other highrotation wrist systems that usehydraulic motors and gear boxes.A built-in automatic gear oilerreduces routine maintenance time, and side access to the saw motoradjustments makes servicing fastand easy. The main drive gear is a three segment design that lowersrebuild cost to a fraction of a motorand gear box system.

Patented offset blade designand one piece rotatable teeth. The FG18 and FG22 both featureTimberjack* field proven disc sawblade and saw teeth. The patentedoffset saw blade means less bindingas the tree is cut and moves onto the butt plate. The Timberjack disc saw blade features integraltooth holders eliminating the problems of bolt-on holder designs.Couple this with one piece, long

shank, rotatable teeth and you cansee why this is the most reliabletooth system in the industry.

*Or Genuine Waratah replacement saw blade and teeth.

More choices. The FG18 and FG22 complementthe existing line of Timberjackfelling heads. High rotation fellingheads do not have the exceptionalwrist torque of standard rotation(+/-15º) felling heads. ThereforeTimberjack’s line of standard rotation heads should be consideredin applications where a higherdegree of tree control is needed. These could be in very tall or largertimber sizes or in frozen conditionswhere stems must be laid down, not"dropped", to prevent shatteringduring bunching.

The high rotation wrist allows the operator to stack bunches from adjacent cut stripsinto a single trail for skidder removal. In a typical two into one felling pattern(above), the feller buncher moves from left to right. The skidder only travels on everyother buncher trail, reducing skidder travel and ground disturbance.

WARATAH EH220Felling head

The Waratah EH220 felling head was specificallydesigned for bio-energy harvesting, cleanings orpre-commercial thinnings, and landscapemanagement. This felling and bunching head isan ideal thinning tool for neglected forests, woodedbanks, roadsides and power line corridors.

This multi-functioning, accumulating felling headcuts the individual stems with a knife. The headcollects automatically, quickly and effectively thecleared trees. The bundle of trees is then stackedat a suitable place. Depending on tree species anddimensions up to ten trees at a time can be

collected. This means that the movement of thecrane can be reduced to a minimum, optimisingthe productivity of the head.

The purpose designed cutting knife gives theEH220 a high degree of utilisation. The durabilityof this knife is considerable higher than of sawchains and saw blades of chainsaws and brushcutters.

The EH220's control system has several automaticfunctions, helping the operator to harvestefficiently and smoothly.
