Why do we need rainwater harvesting?

Theneedforrainwaterharvestingisincreasingasourpopulationcontinuestogrow,andourprecious water reserves decline.Theeffectofclimate changeonourerraticweathersystemintheUK,meansthatthereiseitheranabundanceofwater(floods)ordrought(hosepipebans).

Furthermore,water charges continuetoincreaseyearonyearwithdemand.Waterisanexpensiveresourceweallcannotlivewithout.

How can rainwater harvesting systems help consumers, and the environment?

Bycollecting,filteringandstoringFREE rainwater,upto50%ofmainswaterconsumptionusedinthehome,canbesafelyreplacedwithoutanyinconvenience,savingyoumoneywhilsthelpingtheenvironment.

The Code for Sustainable HomesWhat is the Code?

It is a single, national standard for sustainable homesused by home designers and builders as a guide todevelopment, and by home buyers to assist in theirchoice of home.

The Code uses a sustainability rating system indicatedby stars to communicate the overall sustainabilityperformance of a home.

One star is the Code’s entry level, and 6 stars (the best) isthe Code’s highest performance level.

There are nine categories which make up the Code andone of the most important is water efficiency. Withinthis category there are minimum standards which mustbe achieved at every level of the Code, recognising itsimportance to the sustainability of a home.

Furthermore, the Code has a specific time line to zerocarbon sustainable construction by 2016, for both thepublic and private sectors.

It will also form the basis for future developments inBuilding Regulations relating to carbon emissions from,and energy use in, a domestic property.

In the water efficiency section code levels 3 or 4 have todemonstrate that mains water consumption is 105 litresper person per day, and for code levels 5 and 6 it’s evenless, at 80 litres per person per day.

The table below shows when the minimum, mandatoryCode level for a new home comes into effect in eachsector.

RainRetain Premium Domestic SystemsThe RainRetain Premium domesticsystems are designed to the highestpossible standards, and use high

quality tanks, pumps and filters.There are two completesystems available in this range, the Home system and theGarden system, in tank sizes 2700 to 6500 litres.Largesystems of 7500, 9600 and 13000 litres use two tanks.

The turret system on the neck of the tank can rotate toallow the tank to be installed at any angle.This meansthe turret can be aligned to pipework independently of thetank itself, for easy installation.

The telescopic lid can be tilted to suit ground level onceinstalled for low visual impact.The excavation area issmall compared to other tanks and does not require a

concrete back fill (not applicable if there is a high watertable, see pages 6-7).The tanks are made of Duralen, a recyclable material,therefore, further reducing impact on the environment.A truly environmentally friendly system.

Made by injection compression moulding, the wallthickness is equal in all areas of the tank, for stability,reliability and strength.Yet it is lightweight and canbe supplied in two halves, making transportation andinstallation easy.

The tanks have a 15 yearguarantee and the pumps have a2 year guarantee.

Soakaways and Domestic SUDS solutionsThis multi-purpose percolation tunnel has been designedto replace conventional drainage systems in bothsoakaway and surface water run-off applications.

The unique design offers 300 litres of storage per unitwhilst giving 3 dimensional percolation. One tunnel canreplace up to 36 metres of conventional drainage.

The percolation tunnel can be used as an overflow orsoakaway on rainwater harvesting systems and sewagetreatment plants.

As a soakaway, this system has the distinct advantage ofhaving a small footprint, meaning less ground excavationwhilst offering a favourable price-performance ratio whencompared to typical granular materials.

When used in conjunction with infiltration filters the tunnelmay be used for the attenuation and percolation of run-offfrom hard standing areas.

Building Regulations ( Part H ) now state that percolationis the preferred method for discharging stormwaterwherever possible.A statement endorsed by theEnvironment Agency and SEPA.

The percolation tunnel will contribute to SUDS throughsource control by helping to return runoff to the naturalenvironment at or near its source.
