“I am cognisant of the fact that people

question what the future of Aquis is or what our motivations are, but I

really hope that this is something we are doing to really address all that

and I think it speaks volumes about the approach we are taking right now,”

Fung told ANZ Bloodstock News from the US yesterday.

When questioned further, Fung reiterated that the Aquis racing and

breeding empire would not be disappearing from the Australian industry

any time soon.

“Aquis is 100 per cent here to stay. If this doesn’t quell some of the

rumours, I am not really sure what else I can do to address them,” he

said.

“While there have been changes in the past, I really want to reassure

people that this is the vision going forward and we are now on the path.”

That vision will see Pierata, Invader (Snitzel), Brave Smash (Tosen

Phantom), Divine Prophet (Choisir), Spieth (Thorn Park), Santos (I Am

Invincible), Jukebox (Snitzel) and Bellevue Hill (Pierro) stand at Aquis’

Gold Coast property after spending last season at Lincoln Farm in the

Hunter Valley.

They will join the likes of Dubious (Not A Single Doubt), The Mission

(Choisir), Kiss And Make Up (More Than Ready) and Performer (Exceed

And Excel) on the 2021 Aquis stallion roster.

Aquis, which started in 2015 on the Gold Coast, had been leasing

Emirates Park at Murrurundi since 2017 but was forced to shift its Hunter

Valley operations to Lincoln Farm at Blandford after plans to stand the

NSW roster at Gooree Park Stud were abandoned.

It also relinquished its lease on a property at Seymour in Victoria after

two years, which has now been taken over by Leneva Park where resident

stallions Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar) and Royal Meeting (Invincible

Spirit) remain.

In December, ANZ Bloodstock News revealed that Aquis Farm

had made three nominations team members and two marketing staff

redundant as it overhauled its stud business.

A month later, management was considering offers from rival studs to

take on its Hunter Valley-based stallions with a decision initially expected

to be made in early February on the successful suitors, but it did not come

to fruition.

Fung yesterday went some way in addressing the upheaval and

dramatic change in strategy.

“Stallions are a long-term plan and things change year-to-year, but

ultimately, you have to be in this for the long game,” he said.

“We did take a few years to find our place and find our way and we’ve

learned a lot. Now we

think we have refined

our model and our

strategies and we’re

looking long-term

with this process

moving forward.”

He added: “At the

time (of starting Aquis

Farm) we weren’t sure

Queensland was ready and it took five years for us to learn and gain the

confidence that this was in fact the case.

“The consolidation makes sense when we realised Queensland was

ready and to bring everything back home.”

Director of sales Jonathan Davies will oversee the stallion division in

Queensland.

“I am incredibly excited. It is really a dream come true for myself

and it’s a massive shot in the arm for the Queensland breeding industry,”

Davies said yesterday.

“Queensland breeders have shown that they are a resilient bunch and

they have supported us through the past few years and I think it is as much

a reward for them as it is for us to get the horses here.

“All our shareholders and lifetime breeding rights holders have been

notified today and we have been overwhelmed by the support and the

reception we have received.”

Now that Aquis has recommitted to standing stallions, Fung will

liaise with Davies and the management team about other aspects of the

business such as staffing.

“Jonathan Davies is our director of sales and whether we add staff or

not, that is a discussion he is going to be having with me soon about what

he needs to get his job done properly,” Fung said.

“With the staff we do have in Queensland at the moment, I am 100 per

cent confident in their ability to get the job done.”

Aquis Farm, which sold high-class sprinting mare Houtzen (I Am

Invincible) at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for US$1.5

million last year, still holds a high-quality broodmare portfolio which

would be used to support the large stallion roster.

As for the stud selling bloodstock under its own banner or through

other vendors, Fung revealed those

decisions would be made on a case-by-

case basis.

While there had been speculation over the future of the Aquis’ stallion

operation, Tony Fung sent a clear message to the market in January at

the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale about his commitment to

the industry, when he bought 19 yearlings in partnership with Phoenix

Thoroughbreds for $11.6 million.

Fung, who raced last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), also bought the record-priced

$525,000 Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colt on day one of this week’s Magic

Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

“My father is extremely excited about pushing forward with the racing

division.” he said.

“We have been strong so far through 2021 and you are going to see that

through the rest of the sales season going into (Inglis) Easter.”

As part of Aquis’ announcement, it also released the 2021 service

fees for its roster which is headed by Pierata, who will remain at an

unchanged fee of $44,000 (inc GST) after covering 168 mares, including

65 stakes performers, in his first season at stud last year.

Invader (Snitzel), whose first crop yearlings have sold up to $550,000

this year, will also remain at an unchanged fee of $22,000.

A colt by boom sire Capitalist

(Written Tycoon), who

commanded competition from

two significant international

entities, has capped a record Magic Millions

Adelaide Yearling Sale and provided famed

local stud Cornerstone with the impetus to

consider offering more of its best-credentialed

horses to the market in South Australia.

Prominent Singapore outfit Aramco Racing,

bidding online, won the $425,000 battle for the

prized Cornerstone Stud-bred and consigned

colt after being pushed by under-bidder, US-

owned Spendthrift Australia.

Garry Cuddy, Spendthrift Australia’s

general manager, was at the Adelaide sale

complex in the hope of landing the second-

crop Capitalist yearling, who is by the same sire

as leading Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

contenders Profiteer and Kalashnikov.

The colt was the fourth to break the auction’s

previous highest-priced yearling sold by Magic

Millions in Adelaide, which was set in 2006 at

$340,000. On Tuesday, a $525,000 Fastnet Rock

(Danehill) colt and fillies by Palentino (Teofilo)

($370,000) and Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock)

($360,000) also surpassed the 15-year-old

record.

Cornerstone Stud’s Sam Hayes was almost

lost for words in the minutes following the

sale of the session-topping colt who he bred

in partnership with former Adelaide Crows

chairman Rob Chapman and John Frankhuisen.

“I am a bit overwhelmed actually. There

was quite a big build-up. I was a bit nervous,

so it was great that he sold like that,” Hayes told

ANZ Bloodstock News.

“That probably exceeded our expectations

but the market is strong. It has been a great year

for horse racing, the past 12 months, and we are

just happy to be part of it.

“I think that’s the best thing about it, it gets

you thinking about what you can bring back

next year when they make that sort of money.”

Catalogued as Lot 286, day two’s star colt

is the eighth foal out of the stakes-placed

Okaylah (Flying Spur) who is already the dam

of four winners including the Tony and Calvin

McEvoy-trained Zoulah (Zoustar). He carries

the same Capitalist-Flying Spur (Danehill)

cross as Sunday’s Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) winner Kalashnikov.

Aramco Racing has already had success

with the progeny of Capitalist through the

early deeds of promising two-year-old colt

Gleneagles, who was placed in the Magic

Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) last

December.

Hayes credited Cornerstone Stud’s

bloodstock manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon

for pushing to offer the colt at their home-state

sale, while he also praised new stud manager

Ross Fuller for his work in preparing the farm’s

Adelaide draft.

“Sam Pritchard-Gordon said he was the

best colt we had on the farm when he got back

from (inspecting horses) the Hunter. He said,

‘let’s send him to Adelaide and try and top the

sale’,” he said.

“We didn’t top the sale but in any other year

we would have, so I have to give Sam credit there.”

Armidale’s impressive Impending filly fetches $250,000

David and Rhiannon Whishaw’s decision

to reject private offers for the Impending

(Lonhro) half-sister to last month’s Hobart Cup

(Gr 3, 2400m) winner Double You Tee (Written

Tycoon) and Mannerism Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m)

placegetter Lunakorn (Puissance De Lune)

paid off handsomely in Adelaide yesterday.

Bred by the Whishaws at Armidale Stud in

Tasmania, the daughter of Darley’s Victoria-

based first season stallion Impending was

bought by Cape Schanck owner Tony Ottobre

for $250,000.

Swettenham Stud’s Sam Matthews signed

for the filly on behalf of Ottobre, holding off

Tony and Calvin McEvoy who were the under

bidders.

“We were offered $120,000 before coming

to the sale but we felt that it was the wrong

thing to do to sell her with her already being

catalogued,” David Whishaw revealed.

“We were very keen to bring her here and

showcase her. She’s a lovely filly with a great

walk, so we were confident she’d bring $120,000

but to get beyond that, it’s really blown us away.”

She could have been Armidale Stud’s pin-

up lot at last month’s Tasmanian Yearling Sale,

but the November 14-born filly was instead

reserved for Adelaide.

“We were very tempted to leave her in

Tassie as we thought she’d top the sale, but we

were concerned we wouldn’t get the mainland

buyers down that we needed (due to Covid-19)

and it did look that way only a week out from

the sale with border restrictions ... and Victoria

is about 50 per cent of our buying bench, so we

thought we’d really made the right call.

“That, coupled with the fact she’s a

November foal, every week would make a

difference and we were also keen to bring some

nice stock here to Adelaide.

“We’ve got a young stallion in Alpine Eagle

… but we didn’t want to just bring Alpine

Eagles, so if we brought a nice Impending filly

like her she’d stand out and she certainly has.”

Catalogued as Lot 224, she is the fifth living

foal out of Kandy Korn (Flying Spur), herself a

half-sister to Listed winner Baby Corn (Exceed

And Excel).

The Whishaws have supported Impending

in his first three years at Northwood Park having

been impressed by his foals.

“We try and do a lot of work on our matings

behind the scenes because we haven’t got the

money to go to the best stallions in the country

or buy the best mares in the country,” he said.

“My wife is very keen on it as well, so both

of us over the winter months look at pedigrees

and agonise over which stallions will suit the

mares’ pedigree wise and type wise as we’re

trying to breed commercial horses as well. It is

a real juggle.

“Nowadays the market is often more

worried about type and the fashionability of the

stallion, so it was lovely to see people dig down

and see that we’ve put a bit of work into the

pedigree cross (with our $250,000 filly).”

Clarken snaps up ‘best filly on type’ for $180,000

Will Clarken also teamed up with fellow

trainer David Jolly and agent Suman Hedge

yesterday to buy a Sooboog (Snitzel) filly late in

the Book 1 session for $180,000.

Offered by Edinburgh Park as Lot 323,

the filly is a daughter of stakes-winning mare

Regrowth (Unbridled’s Song), the dam of

Group 2 winner Colour (More Than Ready) and

the stakes-placed Single Blonde (Not A Single

Doubt).

“We have bought a lot of horses but the

(Sooboog) filly was one of our target horses

for the sale. She is just a beautiful athlete by a

young stallion who is going along OK and she’s

out of a fantastic family,” Clarken said.

“She has got residual value but she was

also the best filly on type on the sales ground in

Suman, David Jolly’s and my opinion.”

Clarken believes Kitchwin Hills stallion

Sooboog can develop into a successful stallion

based on his exposure to his progeny so far.

“I have got one, a colt, who goes along well

and I think they are in the same mould as him,

a back-end two-year-old, three-year-old type,”

he said.

“Sooboog is a son of Snitzel obviously and

his sons are taking a bit more time but I am

confident that he is going to make the grade.”

Clarken, Jolly and Hedge also bought a

Capitalist colt for $200,000 on day one. Overall,

Clarken ended up with 12 yearlings from the

Adelaide sale.

The Book 1 sale

closed yesterday as

the strongest South

Australian auction

in Magic Millions

managing director

Barry Bowditch’s time

with the company.

“In my time, it is

far and above anything

we’ve achieved here.

To average well into

the $50,000s, to clear

86 per cent of the Book

1 horses, the sale has

grossed $15 million, it

is a fantastic result for

the state,” Bowditch

said.

“What I am very

pleased about is the

South Australian trainers, I can’t remember the

last time they spent $5 million here.

“From an interstate perspective, buyers

love coming here. It’s a fun sale and from a

local perspective, what Racing SA is doing is

fantastic. They are getting behind the industry.

“There is a spring in the step of the trainers

here and that will reflect on the breeders and

give us great momentum for the sale.”

Bowditch also singled out Magic Millions

South Australia bloodstock consultant Adrian

Hancock for his work in the lead-up to the

sale while he also praised leading vendor

Cornerstone Stud.

“Cornerstone is one of the figurehead

breeders in the state, one of the stallion stations

here and they have kept an outstanding

(Capitalist) colt back for the sale and have been

rewarded,” he said.

“I think, again, it will give Sam (Hayes)

confidence that he can bring that sort of horse

to the sale and get a great result, which is what

we have been trying to get to for years and I am

pleased that we’ve been able to achieve that in

this market.”

Meanwhile, the highest-priced lot in Book 2

was a daughter of Super One (I Am Invincible)

who was bought by Rui Severino for $100,000

from A List Stud. The session aggregate was

AUSTRALIA

Three for Star TurnStartantes (2 f ex Funtantes by Easy Rocking)

won impressively at Eagle Farm to earn first

season sire Star Turn (Star Witness) his third

individual winner. The Robert Heathcote-

trained filly finished second to the unbeaten

Sequesay (Rothesay) on debut at Ipswich last

month and went one better with ease over

1200 metres yesterday, defeating Mishani

Untamed (Husson) by two lengths, with

her stablemate Mishani Esprit (Bel Esprit)

a further head behind in third. Bred by her

trainer, Startantes is the second winner from

as many foals to race out of Heathcote’s

Group 2-winning mare Funtantes (Easy

Rocking). Startantes joins Pegasi and Miss

Hipstar as winners for Star Turn, who is also

the sire of Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) third

Astrologer. Star Turn stood at Vinery Stud last

year for $16,500 (inc. GST).

Pale King remains unbeatenFrench-bred import Pale King (Dabirsim)

kept his unbeaten record intact with a battling

victory in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap

(1600m) at Sandown yesterday. Trained by

Team Hawkes, Pale King had one start in

Britain 12 months ago, winning at Lingfield,

before being bought by Australian interests

and racing in the silks of Rupert Legh. He

won on his Australian debut at Kembla

Grange in October and followed that up with

a long-neck win over Mrs Sippy (Americain)

yesterday, with Our Chevalier (Redoute’s

Choice) another head back in third. Co-

trainer Wayne Hawkes was pleased with the

manner of Pale King’s win. "Sometimes when

you go super slow, it doesn't work well for

you because they sprint up quick, but Craig

(Williams) got it centimetre perfect," Hawkes

said. "He won his first start at Lingfield and

then Covid hit so they decided to sell him.

We were lucky to get him because they were

going to keep him and race him on for 12

more months. He's only a baby but I don't

think you'll see him at Sandown too much

more."

Najmaty stakes carnival claims with debut winThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Najmaty

(I Am Invincible) scored an impressive debut

win in yesterday’s Charlotte Inglis Handicap

(1000m) at Randwick. Najmaty justified

her $2.25 favouritism to defeat Sonnet Star

(Star Turn) by a length and a quarter, with

Lovemetender (Testa Rossa) another head

back in third. By I Am Invincible (Invincible

Spirit) out of dual Group 3 scorer Najoom

(Northern Meteor), a winner of five of her

seven starts, connections are confident

Najmaty can make her presence felt during

the Sydney autumn carnival. "We've been a

fan of her for quite a while and it was good to

see her get to the races like that," Co-trainer

Paul Snowden said. "We just wanted her

to have a good day and a good experience.

I think she'll make the grade." Her jockey

James McDonald added: "She's a lovely filly.

She's got a good action, a good mind. She's a

very strongly-built thing and she'll be a player

over the carnival."

Winning debut for Sixty half-brotherThe Matt Dunn-trained Rainbow Connection

(Choisir) made an eyecatching debut at

Randwick yesterday, winning his 1150-metre

maiden by a cosy two and a half lengths. The

three-year-old half-brother to three-time

Group 1 winner and Hong Kong sensation

Golden Sixty (Medaglia D'Oro) was sent off

a $10 chance yesterday. The three-year-old

trialed well in the lead-up to his debut, and

ran clear of Drummin (Rubick) with ease.

Raoul (Kermadec) finished a head further

back in third. Purchased for $150,000 at the

2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale,

Rainbow Connection is sixth winner from

eight to race out of Gaudeamus (Distorted

Humor), whose current Capitalist (Written

Tycoon) yearling filly sold for $425,000 at this

year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale.

Another first beckons for Cummings clanAnthony, James and Edward Cummings are

all set to saddle up runners in the Pago Pago

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday

and, if all run, it will be the first time the trio

have had starters in the same race. They were

set to clash once before in last year's Inglis

Millennium (RL, 1100m) before Anthony

Cummings scratched Fayerra (Valentia). "It

was going to happen one time and one of us

didn't turn up, so I'm pretty sure it's the first

time in any race," Anthony Cummings said.

The James Cummings-trained Ingratiating

(Frosted), who was runner up in last month’s

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) will make

his Sydney debut in the Pago Pago Stakes.

Anthony will start Tristate (Headwater), while

Edward will be represented by debutante

Maven Spirit (Wandjina). Despite the historic

moment, Cummings senior will put sentiment

aside once the gates open. "As long as I win,

I'm happy," Anthony Cummings said.

Thompson puts faith in Marquand to achieve Sweet resultTrainer John Thompson is hoping Nash Rawiller

has made the wrong call in the Coolmore

Classic (Gr 1, 1500m), as the jockey has opted

to ride Forbidden Love (All Too Hard) over the

Thompson-trained Sweet Deal (Casino Prince),

who will instead be partnered by Tom Marquand.

Six-year-old mare Sweet Deal, who won the $1m

The Hunter (1300m) in November, resumed with

a fifth to Coolmore rival Krone (Eurozone) in

the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) when she

led the field up before tiring over the final stages.

“It (The Hunter) was obviously a good result but

it just put us back for this prep and we've been

a bit behind,” said Thompson. “She would have

run in the Triscay leading into the Guy Walter,

which would have been perfect, but she missed

that 1200-metre run and the way she races, 1400

first up was just a little bit too much."

Icebath omen bet in Coolmore ClassicBrad Widdup’s winner at Wyong on Tuesday

could prove to be a good omen ahead of the

Coolmore Classic, where he will saddle Icebath

(Sacred Falls). The Widdup-trained Maddison’s

Missile (The Factor) won at Wyong carrying

the same colours as the Reg Kemister-raced

Heavens Above (Street Cry), who landed the

Coolmore in 2017. Widdup will be hoping

the stars will align for Golden Eagle (Sacred

Falls) runner-up Icebath, who finished third

in the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on her

last start. “She is great,” he told Racing NSW.

“Everything has gone really well this campaign.

In fairness to everyone, I don’t want the track

on Saturday to be a Heavy 10, but certainly cut

out of the ground would be in Icebath’s favour.”

Doncaster a real thinker if history repeatsKerry Parker is hoping Think It Over (So You

Think) can announce himself as a genuine

Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) contender by

backing-up his last-start win in the Liverpool

City Cup (Gr 3, 1300m) in the Ajax Stakes (Gr

2, 1500m) on Saturday. Parker, who saddled So

You Think to win the Liverpool City Cup at odds

of $51 last month, is optimistic Think It Over

can follow in the footsteps of Brilliant Light

(Fantastic Light) in 2010, who won the Ajax

before going on to run third in the Doncaster.

“It’s definitely on the radar, you don’t get many

chances at a Doncaster,’’ Parker told Racing

NSW. “I was unlucky one year with Brilliant

Light running third in it, he was off the track

the whole way and ran a terrific third behind

Rangirangdoo. This fellow is a genuine, honest,

horse. That’s where he fits in.”

Peters: Queen could be the best I’ve racedOwner-breeder Bob Peters believes three-time

Group 1 winner Arcadia Queen (Pierro) will

become the best horse he has raced if she can

win the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley

on Saturday. "Even though the All-Star Mile

isn't a Group 1, there are nine Group 1 winners

in it and there were ten in it last year and there

are not many big races around that have that

many Group 1 winners in it," Peters told Racing.

com. "It's (All-Star Mile) an equivalent at least

of a really good Group 1. Everyone knows the

level of it. I think Old Comrade is the best horse

I've had. He won four Group 1s and if she can

win on Saturday, she'll go past him."

Traffic concerns at Valley ahead of ASMA field of 15 for the $5 million All-Star Mile is

something a number of jockeys will not have

encountered at the inner-city track before and

Damien Oliver, the rider of Cox Plate (Gr 1,

2040m) winner Russian Camelot (Camelot),

is interested to see how the race unfolds. "We

don't get too many big fields at The Valley,"

Oliver said. "So, there's going to some traffic

concerns for some at some stage and our jobs

as pilots are to negotiate that. They've got a

good strip of track that hasn't been raced for

some time which should provide a good surface

and there's a little bit of rain on the weekend.

Hopefully it will help my horse’s chance."

Tough challenge for The HarrovianToby and Trent Edmonds are expecting The

Harrovian (Fastnet Rock) to face a stiff task in the

All-Star Mile. The seven-year-old gelding received

over 7,500 votes after winning 11 consecutive

races, but he could only finish fifth in the

Shaftesbury Avenue (Gr 3, 1400m) in preparation

for the All-Star Mile last month. "It looked a little

plain on face value, but he didn't get much room

in the straight," Toby Edmonds told Racing.com

of his last-start performance. "He drew a good

barrier (barrier three) and it always looked like

he was going to get a good run. We didn't want

to go back to the fence, but he ended up being

there, stuck there and got a bit of pressure from

his outside. All things being said he was sound

without being brilliant. He'll bounce off that and

improve a bit but needs to do so as well."

Forecast concern for Probabeel

Connections of Probabeel (Savabeel) are

praying the rain stays away ahead of the All-Star

Mile, with trainer Jamie Richards not entirely

comfortable of running her on heavy ground.

“The weather is the one thing you can’t control,”

Richards told Racing.com. “I think she is ok on

wet ground but it’s probably less ideal in the

2000-metre races like we have seen in the Vinery

and the Cox Plate. I am praying it stays away,

if that Saturday rain could come on Sunday

that would be ideal.” Meanwhile, Probabeel’s

strapper Ashley Handley has empathy for the

New Zealand connections of the All-Star Mile

second favourite, who can’t be at the races on

Saturday. Handley has followed Probabeel

across the Tasman for all her Australian runs. "It

would be really nice if this Covid wasn't going

on," Handley said. "I know the owners, Jamie

and everyone would love to be over here. I only

got her when she started travelling but she's

pretty easy to deal with. I've been with her a

while now and I've got to know her, develop a

bond. It's been good to be over here. I enjoy it. I

enjoy being with her."

All-Star tactic change for AvalonAn unfortunate barrier 14 draw for the Shane

Nichols-trained Streets Of Avalon (Magnus) has

opted connections to opt for a change of tactics

with the All-Star Mile outsider. The winner of

the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in September,

Streets Of Avalon is set to be given a quiet ride

by Zac Spain. "We've been wanting to ride him a

bit quieter for quite a while," Nichols told Racing.

com. "As he's got deeper into his prep and drawn

a couple of bad gates, particularly at Caulfield,

we've had to drive him to get him forward and get

him rolling. So, we might take this opportunity

to ride him with cover and slot in somewhere,

whether we can or not I'll leave that up to the

jockey. From bad gates I think you just have to

remove all pressure off the rider and just tell them

to ride the horse and the race as they find it."

McCoull’s once in a lifetime ASM chanceBrendon McCoull is preparing for one of the

biggest rides of his career on Saturday, with the

47-year-old set to partner Still A Star (Toronado)

in the All-Star Mile. McCoull, who has won 14

Jockey Premiership titles in Tasmania, will fly

over tomorrow to partner the Bill Ryan-trained

mare. "I can't remember the last time I rode there,

but I have ridden a winner at The Valley before,"

McCoull told Racing.com. "I have never ridden

in anywhere near a $5 million race, so that will

just be unreal and I have felt a groundswell of

support from the people back home. It is a once-

in-a-lifetime opportunity that obviously Anthony

Darmanin and Adam Trinder got to experience

(with Mystic Journey in 2019) and I certainly never

thought I would be there." Trained by Bill Ryan,

Still A Star landed the Vamos Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m)

last time out to remain unbeaten in her previous

five starts, a win that McCoull was delighted with.

"She really exceeded my expectations with how

she went in the Vamos Stakes after 12 months

off,” he added. "She is a terrific and very adaptable

horse but it's probably a little unfortunate we have

probably hit the best addition of the All-Star Mile

so far.

Star’s turn to shineChris Waller’s Melbourne foreperson, Jo

Taylor, is hoping Star Of The Seas’ (Ocean Park)

consistent form over a mile will benefit him on

Saturday. The six-year-old gelding landed the

Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on his last start and

Taylor believes he has an edge over some of his

All-Star Mile rivals that ran well in the Cox Plate

(Gr 1, 2040m) - Sir Dragonet (Camelot), Russian

Camelot, Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator) and

Arcadia Queen. "You would imagine that

those Cox Plate horses, they're true Group 1

performers and you can't knock them but 2000

metres at Moonee Valley is a different ball game

to the mile and we know he's a miler," Taylor

said. "So those Cox Plate horses almost have to

freshen up a touch and come back from their

optimum distance, whereas I think we're at

ours. If he can be anywhere close to midfield

off a strong tempo, I think you can expect him

with the same sort of finish as that we saw two

weeks ago."

Rosemont seeks Gold stakes successGlitter 'N' Gold (Choisir), the final filly out

of Rosemont Stud’s Gold Lottey (Encosta De

Lago), will bid to remain unbeaten in the Valley

Pearl (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on

Saturday. Gold Lottey, who is the dam of Listed

winner Iconoclasm (Toorak Toff), died over 12

months ago and Rosemont are hoping Glitter

‘N’ Gold can follow up her impressive debut

at Ballarat last month. "We're hopeful she can

scale to stakes-level heights pretty quickly here,"

Rosemont Stud director Anthony Mithen told

Racing.com. "Gold Lottey is the gift that keeps

giving. We bought her many years ago to go to

Toorak Toff first season and we bred Iconoclasm

with that mating. She's gone to God now

obviously, but she gave us a very nice horse and

perhaps another one in this filly to finish with."

Gollan’s each-way weather hopeTony Gollan is confident that five-year-old mare

Krone (Eurozone) has the ability to make her

return to Group 1 level a winning one if plenty

of rain falls in Sydney. Krone, who landed the

Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last start,

hasn’t competed in a Group 1 since her eighth-

placed finish in the 2018 Thousand Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) but Gollan is confident of a big run.

"Really pleased that she's drawn a good gate

in barrier one and now I just need the rain to

come to give her a chance," Gollan told Racing.

com. "If she can find a wet track at Rosehill on

Saturday, then there's no reason she couldn't

run her best race."

Libertini to gallop at Rosehill

Libertini (I Am Invincible) will bypass her

scheduled barrier trial today in favour of a

raceday excursion as she prepares for her

autumn return in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m)

on Saturday week. The four-year-old mare

was given a quiet trial at Canterbury last

month and was due to have another hit-out at

the Randwick trial session today, but trainer

Anthony Cummings said she would not be

going around. "I won't trial her. She galloped

yesterday (Tuesday), it was good work and she

pulled up clean enough. I don't think she needs

another one," Cummings said. "She will have a

gallop around here (at Randwick) on Saturday

morning and a final gallop next Tuesday. We

will take her to Rosehill on Saturday because

she gets a bit antsy sometimes at the track and

she's never been to Rosehill before.”

Valley close to ASM sell outMoonee Valley is close to being sold out for

Saturday’s All-Star Mile meeting, with only

200 general admission tickets remaining as of

yesterday. "The club is really looking forward to

having what will be our biggest crowd trackside

since the 2019 Cox Plate," MVRC general manager

racing, media and communications, Alastair

Dwyer told Racing.com. "The AFL kicks into gear

next weekend and obviously we've got the Group

1 William Reid Stakes next Friday night, which will

be a gripping conclusion to the Autumn Carnival,

but it's really the last time horse racing will have

the Saturday spotlight until the Spring Carnival."

VJA warn on whip rule breachesMatt Hyland, the chief executive of the Victorian

Jockeys Association, believes there could

be breaches of the whip rules in Saturday’s

Country Mile Final (1600m) at Moonee Valley,

with riders not allowed to use their whip more

than five times during the race. “One sure thing

that is confirmed (through the whip-limited

series) is that regardless of what rules you have

in place, there will be breaches,” Hyland told

Racing.com. “The penalties template that was

introduced at the start of this racing season

certainly improved the stats and amount of

breaches but, regardless of the rules, there will

be whip breaches due solely to the competitive

nature of jockeys. To explain what a rider is

thinking at that point when fighting out a finish

with another rider in a race, they are doing their

utmost to get the best out of their horse and to

encourage the horse to get to the line first. That

is the mindset of the jockey and mostly that is

what we are seeing. The breaches are coming

from riders fighting out the finish, not the ones

that are running a distant third or fourth.”

Scott making good progressMornington trainer Brett Scott is conscious and

talking as he recovers from being kicked in the

head by a horse last Wednesday. Scott’s wife

Kylie said he has no memory of the incident,

but he has made positive progress easing out

of an induced coma. “We went in and saw

him last night, he’s been moved into a ward,”

Kylie Scott told RSN927. “He is conscious and

answering questions. I sat down and asked him

if he knew what had happened and he said no,

and I told him he’d been kicked in the head

by a horse. All he wanted was a cup of tea. He

got a little bit agitated and wanted to get out of

the bed, but we settled him down. Just seeing

him awake was amazing and knowing that he

was conversing with me – even though it was

gibberish – but he was still talking to me, it was

an amazing feeling.” Scott sustained a small

bleed on the brain in addition to facial injuries

which required surgery.

Vale Richard TreweekeRichard Treweeke, the part-owner of all-time

great racemare Winx (Street Cry), died aged

90 on Tuesday. Treweeke was responsible for

naming Winx, who landed a world record 25

Group 1 wins in her 43-start career. She won

37 races in total, amassing more than $26

million in prize-money. A permanent statue

of Winx was unveiled at Rosehill on Monday to

celebrate the achievements of the wondermare.

NEW ZEALAND

Arjaybee impressive on debutThe Chris Bothwell-trained Arjaybee (Highly

Recommended) made a winning debut at Otaki

yesterday, coming from last under apprentice

Taiki Yanagida to land the Aquashield Roofing

3YO Maiden (1200m). The victory was an

emotional one for Bothwell, as Arjaybee is named

after his late father and former training partner

Dick (Richard John Bothwell). A $22,000 purchase

at Karaka Book 3 from the Long Acres Stud draft,

Arjaybee defeated Winnie Rose (Burgundy) by

a head, with Vishakha (Power) a further long

neck behind in third. “Not long before Dad

passed away he came down to the stables when

four horses came back from the sales and this is

the girl that he really liked,” Bothwell said. “The

owners were very kind and named her after Dad.

She hasn’t done much wrong. She has shown an

awful lot the whole way through.”

Benner-Wynyard pair on track for GuineasOtaki trainers Johno Benner and Hollie

Wynyard enjoyed a good day on their home

track on Wednesday. The duo saddled

impressive maiden winner Meg (Sebring),

while they also took the opportunity to give

their Wellington Guineas-bound pair, Bonham

(Per Incanto) and Hold The Press (Press

Statement), an exhibition gallop. “They worked

over 1000 metres on a genuine slow track and

it was good sharp work. Danielle Johnson rode

Hold The Press and Lisa Allpress rode Bonham,

and they were both pleased,” Benner said.

Benner and Wynyard have made the Wellington

Guineas their own, winning three of the past six

runnings, and they’re expecting another strong

edition this year. “The Wellington Guineas has

become a really good race over the past few

years since they have moved it on the calendar

and it should be a strong race again this year,”

Benner added.

Group 1 opportunity for Bonny LassGraham Richardson was not planning to

run Bonny Lass (Super Easy) in the Sistema

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) until he saw just four

nominations for the contest on Tuesday.

The Jamie Richards-trained stablemates On

The Bubbles (Brazen Beau) and Sword of

State (Snitzel) were originally joined by just

Magneto (Showcasing) and Seven Twenty

(Power). Richardson was planning to bypass

the Sistema Stakes with Bonny Lass, winner of

the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

on February 27, and instead concentrate on

the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) on April 3, but the lack of nominations

changed his mind. “I was a little bit confused

about why there were so few nominations. It’s

actually a little bit disappointing to be fair,”

said Richardson, who trains in partnership

with Rogan Norvall. “But when I saw there

were only four we decided to have a go. I

jokingly said we would go as long as we draw

barrier one, and we have.”

Milford Sound set to cruise to maiden successAndrew Carston is hoping suggestions that

he might have one of the best-credentialled

maiden gallopers in the South Island are

short-lived. Riccarton trainer Carston will

produce three-year-old gelding Milford

Sound (Ocean Park) in today’s Piccadilly

Books Stocktake Sale Maiden (1600m) on his

home track, hoping the last-start Southland

Guineas (Listed, 1600m) runner-up can shed

his maiden status. “He was a bit unlucky not to

win the race,” Carston said of Milford Sound’s

nose defeat at the hands of Chokito (Vespa)

at Ascot Park last month. “He’s a progressive

horse I really like and he’s come through the

Southland Guineas in good order. He’s got to

be the horse to beat tomorrow.”

USA: Drugs supplier sentenced to prisonScott Robinson, the operator of racehorse

doping websites that sold and distributed

adulterated and misbranded drugs, was on

Tuesday sentenced to 18 months in prison.

From around 2011 through to March last year,

Robinson conspired with others to manufacture,

sell and ship millions of dollars’ worth of drugs,

including performance-enhancing drugs

marketed to racehorse trainers and others

in the industry, according to the indictment

and court documents. The drugs were sold by

Robinson through several websites, including

horseprerace.com. Among the drugs sold were

blood builders, used by racehorse trainers

to increase red blood cell counts and the

oxygenation of muscle tissue to improve a horse’s

endurance. Audrey Strauss, the United States

attorney for the Southern district of New York,

said: “Scott Robinson created and profited from

a system designed to exploit racehorses in the

pursuit of speed and prize-money, risking their

safety and wellbeing. Robinson sold unsanitary,

misbranded, and adulterated drugs, and misled

and deceived regulators and law enforcement

in the process." Robinson was also sentenced to

three years of supervised release and ordered to

forfeit US$3,832,318.90.

UK: Goffs February goes onlineThe rescheduled Part 2 of the Goffs February

Sale will be hosted as a live online auction

on Thursday, with a mixed catalogue of Flat

and National Hunt weanlings set to come

under the hammer from noon. Following a

significant number of withdrawals, around

80 lots are left in the catalogue, with

Acclamation (Royal Applause), Camacho

(Danehill), Dandy Man (Mozart), Mehmas

(Acclamation), Nathaniel (Galileo) and

Ruler Of The World (Galileo) among the

proven Flat sires with progeny on offer.

Among the eyecatchers on paper are Acorn

Stud's Highland Reel (Galileo) colt from the

family of Wings Of Eagles (Pour Moi) (Lot

359); a daughter of Australia (Galileo) who

shares her pedigree with High Chaparral

(Sadler’s Wells) (371) from Baroda Stud;

and the Exceed And Excel (Danehill) half-

sister to Listed-winning sprinter Copper

Knight (Sir Pracealot) (374) consigned by

Wardstown Stud. To view the catalogue,

BY TOMMY CHURCHYARD

Dave Morissey’s Cannon Hayes

Stud are one of the vendors

appearing on this year’s Inglis

Classic Yearling Sale catalogue

for the first time, with four of their horses set to

go through the ring at Riverside Stables.

Established in March 2019, Cannon Hayes

Stud is located just outside Scone in the sought-

after Hunter Valley region of New South Wales

and was the brainchild of Morissey, who has

long desired to set up his own operation.

Born in Ireland, Morissey moved over to

Australia on a scholarship and subsequently

spent 18 years at Arrowfield Stud, operating as

their stud manager for the final five years of his

time at the world-renowned operation.

But a desire to have a crack at running

his own operation with his wife Lucy, a

veterinarian, led him to set up Cannon Hayes

Stud, a boutique farm named after his mother’s

estate back in County Tipperary, Ireland.

“I moved over to Australia in 2000 and

I worked for Arrowfield Stud for 18 years,

managing the place for five years,” says

Morissey.

“There came a time in my life when I just

wanted to have a go on my own. Arrowfield

were very good to me, but the next step was to

buy our own family-run place.

“We bought a small boutique farm five

minutes outside Scone and I’m here with my

wife Lucy and our two sons, Teddy and James.

We’re a young family.

“The property is 105 acres and we’re more

reliant on quality than quantity, that’s the

business structure that we have. We don’t want

lots of numbers, we probably want 40, and we

don’t want to overrun the property.

“The business plan for us is to breed them,

rear them and sell them.

“We’re really happy with the business, the

industry over here is unbelievable really.”

Cannon Hayes Stud have quickly ramped

up their operation to meet their maximise

their facilities, with Morissey adding: “When

we started off the business we had 10 foals,

now we’ve got 20 foals and next year we’ll be

represented at all the major sales.”

They have entered a five-strong draft for the

Inglis Classic Sale, with one lot withdrawn, and

the first horse of theirs to go through the ring is

Lot 333, a Headwater (Exceed And Excel) colt

out of Bernardini (A. P. Indy) mare Sozzini.

A maiden winner on the track, this colt is

Sozzini’s second living foal, with her previous

filly yet to race.

2015 Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) Headwater

has proven himself to be an impressive young

sire, with Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3,

1200m) winner Wisdom Of Water among his 33

winners from 81 runners at the time of writing.

“They’re a quality bunch of horses, we’ve

got three lovely colts and we’re expecting them

to sell well,” says Morissey. “The Headwater colt

is lovely, he’s more your three-year-old type,

a classy kind of horse. He’s by a stallion that’s

doing a good job.”

Ten lots later, Cannon Hayes will be

represented by flying stallion Savabeel (Zabeel),

whose colt out of Lovetessa (O’Reilly) was the

second top-lot at Karaka 2021 last month at

NZ$720,000.

THE HEADWATER COLT IS LOVELY, HE’S MORE YOUR THREE-YEAR-OLD TYPE, A CLASSY KIND OF HORSE. HE’S BY A STALLION THAT’S DOING A GOOD JOB- DAVE MORISSEY

| 10 |

The sire of 21 top-level winners, Savabeel

has four lots at the Inglis Classic sale and

Morrissey seems particularly excited for his colt

out of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Starry (Lot

343) to go through the ring.

“The Savabeel colt is a cracking type, lovely

walker with a great temperament,” he says.

“The Savabeel-O’Reilly cross is a cross that

works, they’ve had 18 stakes winners and it’s

Inglis Classic Yearling Sale 2021

| 10 | | 11 |Brought to you by Brought to you by Follow us @anz_news

the best cross. If you look at Savabeel’s stats,

it’s by far the best stakes-winning cross.

“There’s probably no better time to be

selling a Savabeel, he’s had an outstanding

year. We’d be very disappointed if this horse

didn’t sell well.”

However, the pick of their bunch according

to Morissey is Lot 562, a Deep Field (Northern

Meteor) colt out of Flying Spur (Danehill) mare

De Sea Eagle.

Deep Field, who stood at Newgate for

$55,000 (inc. GST) in 2020, recently had a colt

out of Courageous Kitty (Fastnet Rock) sell

for $700,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale and Morissey is expecting this bay

colt to be popular among buyers.

“The Deep Field colt is probably the pick of

the bunch for us,” he says.

“He’s a really precocious colt, very attractive

and a great walking horse.

“The stallion needs no introduction, he’s

hot at the moment, and being out of a Flying

Spur mare, who is very good at producing

broodmares, we’d expect that horse to sell

extremely well.

“We’d like to think he would apply to the

Asian market, these colts are sought after.”

The other lot going through the ring for

Cannon Hayes is a Dundeel (High Chaparral)

filly out of Stareign (Northern Meteor) (Lot

341), while a Pierro (Lonhro) filly included in

their five-strong draft has been withdrawn.

Despite this being a strange year for the

stud to have their first yearlings at the Inglis

Classic Sale, Morissey is confident the numbers

will remain strong.

Dual Group 1 winner In Her

Time (Time Thief) is the latest

high-profile addition to May’s

Inglis Chairman’s Sale, a year

after the mare topped the sale for $2 million

when purchased by Newgate on behalf of Orbis

Bloodstock.

This year, the now eight-year-old daughter

of Time Thief (Redoute’s Choice) is being

offered in foal to I Am Invincible (Invincible

Spirit), with Orbis having decided that breeding

will not be a key focus of theirs. She will be

offered within the Newgate Farm draft.

“In Her Time was one of the best sprinting

mares we’ve seen in the past decade and she’s

from a very deep family,’’ Newgate managing

director Henry Field said.

“We purchased her on behalf of Orbis at

last year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale as they were

dissolving a partnership.

“Orbis have opted to offer her for sale

this year as the decision has been made that

breeding will not be their key focus.”

In Her Time, who broke through for her

maiden Group 1 success when winning The

Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in March 2018 having won

three times at Group 2 level and placed three

times in Group 1 company, followed up with

victory in the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m)

down the Flemington straight in February 2019

after being transferred to trainer Kris Lees.

“It’s a privilege to be consigning a mare of

this quality,” added Field.

“She’s been a dream to have had residing

on the farm, having gone in foal to I Am

Invincible on an early September cover and I

have no doubt she will be one of the most highly

sought-after pregnant mares that gets offered

at public auction anywhere in the world in

2021.”

In Her Time is out of Zeditave (The Judge)

mare Hell It’s Hot, a half-sister to stakes winners

Hot As Hell (County), Flaming Hot (County)

and Craig’s Dragon (Catbird), as well as Sin

Sin Sin (Fantastic Light), the dam of Everest

(1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) and the

stakes-placed Dee Nine Elle (Duporth).

Inglis’ NSW bloodstock manager, Chris

Russell, said: “She has got everything you

would want in a mare and she’s carrying to I

Am Invincible – packages like that come on the

open market very, very rarely.

“We are obviously incredibly grateful for

the opportunity that the owners have given to

us and I think, in partnership with Newgate

who are such great consignors, we can deliver

a fantastic sale.”

The Inglis Chairman’s Sale will take place at

Riverside Stables on Friday, May 7.

DAVID MORGAN | @ANZ_NEWS

Caspar Fownes enjoys the thrill of a

gamble but Hong Kong’s sporting

three-time champion trainer will

not be playing high stakes with

Aethero (Sebring). The handler has revealed

to Asia Bloodstock News that the horse, once

deemed Hong Kong’s great new hope, will not

be adding much-needed star quality to the

Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha

Tin on April 25.

“Aethero was going to run in April but we’ll

just wait,” Fownes said, explaining that he and

owner James Tien have shelved a plan to run

the talented four-year-old in both the Sprint

Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) and the big race three weeks

later.

The trainer, however, lessened the blow

of that news by confirming the gelding’s half-

brother, The Everest (1200m) hero Classique

Legend (Not A Single Doubt), is on target to

make the FWD Champions Day feature after

cruising confidently through a barrier trial at

Conghua last week.

“Classique Legend is going to trial again

and the plan at this stage is to run him in the

Sprint Cup in early April, and then into the big

Group 1 at the end of April,” Fownes added.

Aethero’s own effort in an 800-metre

barrier trial under Joao Moreira at Sha Tin two

weeks ago had increased speculation of an

approaching return to racing for the first time

since the former John Moore-trained galloper

bled from both nostrils in the 2020 Chairman’s

Sprint Prize.

“At the moment he’s just too far off,” Moreira

said. “It’s difficult to predict and I hope Caspar

does a miracle and can turn Aethero’s fitness

around quickly, but if I was to guess, I’d say next

season he might be able to come back to his

best fitness."

Aethero’s backstory has already garnered

plenty of column inches: the $575,000 Inglis

Easter Sale purchase lowered Sacred Kingdom’s

(Encosta De Lago) Sha Tin 1000-metre track

record, proved his Group 1 worth at a tender

age, and then went wrong on the big stage.

Within weeks of seeing his potential

champion trail in a blood-spattered last, Tien

transferred the horse from Moore – then on the

cusp of compulsory retirement – to Fownes, a

handler with a good record of getting the best

out of fragile gallopers.

Those skills have been tested since

September when the tall chestnut compounded

his problems with an off-fore tendon injury,

and this, along with the Hong Kong Jockey

Club’s policy of two bleeds triggering automatic

retirement, means Fownes is not taking

chances.

“Aethero is too good a horse, he’s only four.

The right thing to do is just give him some time.

He will come through and he might still run at

the end of the season,” he said, giving a nod to

the Sha Tin Vase Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) on

May 23.

“He’s in full work, he’s swimming every day

and he’s cantering every day. He looks beautiful,

he’s put on 50 pounds, which is what we wanted

him to do, and he’s a lovely, imposing horse. He’s

taken a chill pill so his head is in a good space.”

Despite a rise in numbers from 1200 horses

to around 1400 – thanks to HKJC’s Conghua

facility – Hong Kong’s elite pool across all

distances has been losing depth in recent years;

a reality now masked only thinly by the fantastic

exploits of Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro).

The quality drain has been especially

apparent in the sprint ranks this season. The

current crop is well below halcyon champions

like Silent Witness (El Moxie) and Sacred

Kingdom, and lacks the numbers of genuine

Group 1 contenders seen in the days of Lucky

Nine (Dubawi), Aerovelocity (Pins) and

Peniaphobia (Dandy Man).

Against this backdrop, Classique Legend’s

long-anticipated arrival at Sha Tin in November

was viewed within HKJC’s Happy Valley HQ as

a blessed boon. Tellingly, senior management

sanctioned the high-profile Bon Ho-owned

gelding’s importation despite having already

reached the age of five. The Club’s marketing

machine went into overdrive, promoting the

galloper’s movements from the moment he

touched down.

The new pin-up – a $400,000 yearling buy

for Ho at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale

– even started second-favourite in the market

behind Hot King Prawn (Denman) for the

LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m)

but came home a tired 11th to that rival’s flat

seventh-placed finish.

“It takes time when you bring these horses

into this environment, they have to learn

to cope. There were issues at the Werribee

quarantine and I wasn’t there on the ground.

When he came out of quarantine, he wasn’t 100

per cent,” Fownes said.

“We’ve given him a nice break, he’s been in

China for the last six or seven weeks and he’s

been in the spa, the aquatread, doing uphill

gallops; he’s had a nice, soft trial last week, so

it’s coming along. He’s starting to use himself

the right way.”

With no Aethero, Hong Kong needs a peak

Classique Legend when Champions Day rolls

around. The World’s Best Racehorse Rankings

for the 2018 calendar year included ten Hong

Kong sprinters and in 2019 the figure was

nine; but the most recent number dropped to

six – excluding Classique Legend whose 125

rating was achieved under Les Bridge’s watch

in Australia – and three of those six have since

retired.

And, when Japan’s Danon Smash led home

the local longshots Jolly Banner (Lonhro),

Rattan (Savabeel) and Wishful Thinker (I Am

Invincible) in December’s Hong Kong Sprint,

Sha Tin’s pinnacle sprint prize plunged out

of the latest World’s Top 100 Group 1 Races,

despite rating as the world’s best 1200-metre

race the previous year.

“Quality is down, I must say. Even my

fellow, Jolly Banner, a nine-year-old, can finish

second in the Hong Kong Sprint,” said Ricky

Yiu, the man who prepped world champion

Sacred Kingdom and the straight-track bullet

Amber Sky (Exceed And Excel).

Hot King Prawn has a rating second only to

Classique Legend among current Hong Kong-

based sprinters, with an international mark of

120, but the quality of opponents for his recent

top-level breakthrough in January’s Centenary

Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) only emphasised the

extent to which the sprint ranks have depleted

this season.

In 2016, HKJC changed the race distance

from 1000 metres to 1200 metres to ensure a

higher calibre contest. Since then, the race has

had an average race rating – based on Hong

Kong local ratings pre-race – of between 116

(2016) and 121.2 (2020), until this year. The

2021 contest dipped markedly to a figure of

112.8; the average career peak rating of those

horses was 114.4, dropping below 120 for the

first time since the final 1000-metre version

brought together sprinters with an average

peak of 117.5; the 2020 field lined up with an

average career peak rating of 125.4.

Moreira, who partnered Beat The Clock

(Hinchinbrook) to two Hong Kong champion

sprinter titles before that gelding’s retirement

last term, has ridden Hot King Prawn in each of

the grey’s last eight starts.

“If we put Hot King Prawn as the best

sprinter in Hong Kong, well he’s not an

outstanding horse: he’s very consistent but he

has won only one Group 1 race and he took a

long time to do that,” Moreira said.

“You look back ten years and surely the

sprinters would have been a higher calibre: not

just one, there’d have been numbers of good

horses running 1200 metres in Hong Kong.”

Australian racing’s rude health is accepted

broadly as one factor in the Hong Kong quality

dip. Australia’s burgeoning prize-money,

encouraging owners to think twice about

selling, and the buoyancy at the top end of

the Australian bloodstock market, despite

the Covid-19 pandemic, mean unfavourable

conditions for Hong Kong owners. While

Australian buyers appear to have been largely

uninhibited by the pandemic, most Hong

Kong agents, owners and trainers have been

hamstrung, forced by circumstance to remain

in Hong Kong and miss sales such as the recent

Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, where Yiu sourced

Sacred Kingdom.

Fownes called it “nuts,” that Australian

owners are asking “two and a half or three

million” dollars for ready-raced geldings

like Shadow Hero (Pierro). He sees Privately

Purchased Griffins (PPGs), unraced imports,

as a way forward for Hong Kong. “The future is

from the yearling sales or the breeze-ups or the

nice trial horses because history tells you that

the ones that start off a 52 rating, they come

in and progress through their grades, they

get tougher and stronger,” he said. But, as Yiu

noted, “It’s not an easy thing to get right.”

On Saturday, Hot King Prawn – a PPG –

will shoulder top weight in a nine-runner

Class 1 1200-metre handicap and Fownes

will take him on with the emerging Sky Field

(Deep Field) competing from nine points

out of the handicap. The four-year-old is

one of a trio of young PPG talents, along

with Wellington (All Too Hard) and Winning

Dreamer (Deep Field), aiming to take that

next step to the top table.

Fownes believes that if he can get Classique

Legend and, in time, Aethero, firing on all

cylinders again, he has in his stable the kind of

quality the sprint division so desperately needs.

“Overall, you’ve got Hot King Prawn that

looks pretty good but he’s the only one: besides

a couple of young ones maybe coming through,

the rest of them you wouldn’t worry about.

Potentially I’ve got two of the best sprinters in

the world, no doubt about it,” he said.

IT'S IN THE BLOOD

TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS

The sheiks and the sultans will swing

their super-sized chequebooks amidst

the world’s foremost sales to attain

their horseflesh. Other players in this

game have to run a little more in the shadows, or

box a bit more clever to land their quarry.

This is a pedigree column, so be warned,

today’s subject doesn’t really have one, or not

one dripping with blue blood or blue hens.

When you look up his page from his yearling

sale, the top update crows that he has a half-

sister who ran third in the time-honoured Supa

IGA Maiden at Nhill, a dot in western Victoria.

But here’s a case when a pedigree perhaps

doesn’t have to be good, just good enough.

Lion’s Roar was bought not at Sydney Easter

or the Magic Millions, but at the 2019 Karaka

sale, and from Book 2 in fact. When many of the

big guns had fallen silent, trainer John O’Shea

and Champion Thoroughbreds’ maven Jason

Abrahams nabbed him for all of NZ$65,000.

On Saturday he carried Champion’s red

and white silks to a commanding victory in

the Group 1 Randwick Guineas. It gave O’Shea

his first Group 1 success on his long road back

since returning to public training in 2017. And

it took Lion’s Roar’s record from seven starts

to four wins and two placings (one of those at

Group 1 level too) – raising his earnings for the

20-odd owners banded together by Champion

from across Australia to almost $850,000.

And there’s major hope for much more to

come. The three-year-old gelding’s designed

target this autumn is still coming up, in the

2000-metre Rosehill Guineas on Saturday week.

Lion’s Roar’s pedigree wasn’t proven when

he went under the hammer, but it wasn’t exactly

abject.

He was from the first crop of Contributer,

the imported son of High Chaparral O’Shea

trained at Godolphin to win two Group 1s amid

his Apollo-Chipping Norton-Ranvet clean-

sweep in the autumn of 2015.

On the dam’s side there’s a Group 1

winner in the recent past in granddam The

Mighty Lions. The daughter of Grosvenor was

a Flemington winner who took the Avondale

Gold Cup of 2004. She also threw, as her third

foal, Minnaleo (Black Minnaloushe), who had

a win and two placings from three races in New

Zealand before an early retirement.

Minnaleo’s first foal was Minnamosa

(Alamosa). Though best known for her third at

Nhill that day in 2018, she’s gone on to record

three wins and 15 placings in the bush from

her 33 starts to date. But what a pedigree boost

she’s had, breeding-wise, through the deeds of

her younger half-brother, picked up for a snip

at Karaka.

“It’s interesting because you can go to

Magic Millions and people will pay three or

four hundred thousand dollars for a yearling

and there are no Group 1 winners on the page,”

Abrahams tells It’s In The Blood. “But Lion’s

Roar’s grandmother won one, and one of our

criteria is to try to find yearlings with a Group 1

winner in their pedigree, not too far back.”

Still, it wasn’t what lay on paper but what

trod the earth which caught O’Shea and

Abrahams’ attention at that yearling sale.

They’d been keen to buy into the first crop

of Contributer, but thought they had missed the

boat. Mapperley Stud, which stands the sire,

had offered a colt by him in Book 1. It fell to

Godolphin for NZ$250,000 – outside of the price

range of Champion’s carefully tailored business

model, designed to suit small to medium-sized

owners.

But while looking around, the two old

colleagues had their heads turned by one

that walked past which ticked several of their

personal boxes.

“We saw him walk past and we followed

him back to his box and asked the farm what

was he?” Abrahams says. “He was in Book 2, but

John and I didn’t even have a Book 2 catalogue,

but they showed us his pedigree and we found

out he was a Contributer. He was a big strapping

yearling with a bit of character about him.

”John said he had a lot of features that

reminded him of his dad. He’s probably not as

leggy as his dad; he’s just a medium-sized horse

but he’s very strong, and John said he walked

and held himself in a similar fashion.”

This purchase was well within Champion’s

budget, which Abrahams put at around $100,000

for a Book 2 lot. (That $250k Contributer they’d

missed out on? He’s called Jeronimos, and an

hour before Lion’s Roar’s Randwick Guineas

triumph he ran second in a Hawkesbury Class

1).

The yearling Lion’s Roar had matched up

with Abrahams’ charter, as a potential middle-

distance horse in several ways, but an early step

had to be taken.

“He was probably never going to be a

stallion prospect, because he was a pretty burly

fella and a playful colt. So we bought him and

gelded him and syndicated him,” Abrahams

says.

“But he just looked like a tough, sound, colt

who would handle work, and you really need

that in Sydney.

“If you’re going to knock around every two

weeks in middle distance races, they need a

fair bit of work to be pumped into them to be

ready, particularly if you’re going to get stuck

into them as a late two-year-old and a three-

year-old.”

Furthermore, Abrahams and O’Shea saw in

Lion’s Roar the type of robust galloper suited to

modern Australian trends.

“If you’re buying a New Zealand horse to

get over a bit of ground, unless you get a really

exceptional horse, you’re only window really

is to win races at three, before the imported

middle distance horses arrive here,” Abrahams

says.

“If you’ve got a horse who you can’t put

much work into or is not a good eater or is just

going to take a whole heap of time, and who

won’t handle a good few hard track gallops,

you’re really not going to get there in the time

you need to get there for that window, when

you’ve got to make your hay.”

Encouragingly, The Mighty Lions had also

thrown Vaquera, a High Chaparral mare who

was third in the 2013 Group 1 Queensland Oaks,

and won three from 18 for Gai Waterhouse.

“The lack of depth to Lion’s Roar’s pedigree

was fine because we weren’t paying a lot of

money anyway for him, and I knew Vaquera

was actually a tough horse, who used to run

around every second week,” he says. “And she

was by High Chaparral, so Lion’s Roar was very

similarly genetically made up in comparison to

Vaquera.”

Not one to ponder long over a broodmare

sire – “when you look at good horses, the

broodmare sire can come from anywhere”

– Abrahams is more enthused over the High

Chaparral sire line.

“We’ve struggled with it a bit in Australia

but now High Chaparral has a bunch of young

stallions coming through, like Dundeel and his

son Castelvecchio,” Abrahams says.

“Contributer is getting a lot of runners now

and they’re starting to come out earlier than I

expected. He had a Group 2-winning filly last

week in New Zealand (Llanacord), and then by

Saturday he had a Group 1 winner as well.

“What I really like about him now is he’s

getting fillies. That sire line is notorious for colts

being better than fillies. So I feel that he might

be a superior stallion, because he’s doing it

really well with fillies.

“Most of that sireline have struggled with

fillies because they’re not big eaters and they’ve

all been a bit fizzy mentally, so they’ve struggled

in the Australasian training environment. But

the fact Contributer is getting these fillies is

a really good leading indicator to him being a

better than average stallion over time.”

If Lion’s Roar can continue to shine in his

three-year-old window, and indeed beyond,

his story will certainly be one in which the

results will bear out a hunch about his sire

that was in a way thrust upon O’Shea and

Abrahams, two men who were certainly in the

right place at the right time at that Karaka sale

two years ago.

BY LEO SCHLINK | HKJC_RACING

Almost five years after debuting

at Happy Valley, Irish import

Travel Datuk (Holy Roman

Empire) shed unwanted status

as Hong Kong’s most celebrated maiden by

successfully snapping a 48-start losing streak to

the bemusement and delight of Richard Gibson

and Matthew Poon.

Feted as a cult horse – and Facebook hero

– after 17 minor placings (11 seconds and six

thirds) from his previous 48 outings in Hong

Kong, Travel Datuk narrowly claimed the Class

4 Chatham Handicap (1000m) after a promising

career opening in Ireland, where he raced as

Rockaway Valley for Jessie Harrington.

Sold to Hong Kong after placing at Group

3 level and running fifth in the Phoenix Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) at The Curragh in 2015, Travel

Datuk took his earnings to HK$4.27 million

long after being decried as a non-winner.

Travel Datuk actually won a Maiden as a

two-year-old in Ireland in 2015, but had proved

eternally frustrating in his new surroundings –

albeit with a growing profile.

“Actually, he became a very popular

horse this season. Many fans contacted us on

Facebook, he’s a brave, very consistent horse,

always tries his best – and for some reason, today

was his day,” Gibson said of the eight-year-old.

“I do not know why he chose today, but

congratulations to Matthew (Poon). He made

the difference.

“He always tries his best, but he’s not used

to winning. He’s been very consistent and

sometimes that’s how it goes in racing - it’s a

great credit to the horse, he kept himself in

good shape and today was the day.”

Gibson indicated the eight-year-old’s

competitive limitations did not detract from

the horse’s generous nature and popularity. “I

think I will remember him for his defeats and these

are not things for a trainer that you are proud of –

the defeats. You are more celebratory of the wins.

“So, we’ll take today. You never know. Now

he’s won once, who knows next time?

“I didn’t think he was going to make it

(win), actually. It’s not a record a trainer is very

proud of but he’s been very consistent this year

and a lot of fun.

“It’s funny – these horses, once they get their

nose in front, they tend to do it another time.”

Following in a similar vein, the David

Ferraris-trained Xiang Bai Qi (Azamour)

saluted in the following event – the Class 3

Bulkeley Handicap (1800m) – to register his

second win in 35 outings.

Partnered by Karis Teetan, the Azamour

(Night Shift) gelding posted his first victory

since 30 October, 2019.

Wind N Grass (Lawman) restored

something approaching normality with his

second win in a week for trainer John Size and

Teetan in the second section of the Class 3 Baker

Handicap (1200m) as the Lawman (Invincible

Spirit) gelding posted his third Hong Kong

success – all over 1200 metres.

Stock Legend (Sidestep) continued his

excellent recent form with victory in the Class

4 Gillies Handicap (1200m) – his third win from

five starts for Francis Lui.

Beautifully ridden by Joao Moreira, the

Sidestep (Exceed And Excel) gelding has flourished

after a trip to Conghua, according to Lui.

“It was a good run and he was more behaved

and under control,” Lui said. “We teach him and

we sent him to Conghua and get him to forget

some of the bad habits.

“After the race, Joao said if he got a good

gate, even (in) Class 3, he’s got a good chance.”

Zac Purton continued a phenomenal

week with victory on Fantastic Fabio (Hidden

Dragon) in the Class 5 Wuhu Handicap (1200m)

for Dennis Yip before Derek Leung combined

with Manfred Man and Hero Star (Kaphero)

to land the first section of the Class 4 Gillies

Handicap (1200m).

Purton has ridden nine winners at the past

three meetings and has figured in eight wins

with Yip for the 2020/21 season, while Leung

posted his eighth win from the past 11 meetings

and his 25th winner for the term.

Blake Shinn praised Casper Fownes after

Tangmere (Frankel) proved his class with a

powerful win in the second section of the Class

4 Po Loi Handicap (1650m).

The Frankel (Galileo) gelding was given time

to settle by the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey

as Shinn tracked Moreira on race-favourite

Shanghai Grace (Kyllachy) before edging into

clear running approaching the straight.

“It was a strong win, he was the class runner

of the race, but he was dropping back in class,”

Shinn said.

“He got the job done nicely – it means a lot

for me to ride a winner for Casper. He’s just kept

throwing me a decent ride here and there and

he’s been a solid supporter from day one. It’s

nice to get a winner for him and hopefully keep

the ball rolling.”

Stay Chill (Invincible Spirit) claimed the

first section of the Class 4 Po Loi Handicap

(1650m), prevailing by a short head for Vincent

Ho and Chris So over a much-improved

Rainbow Light (Outstrip) and veteran Thunder

Stomp (Fastnet Rock).

Matthew Poon completed a memorable

night with a double by guiding Shouson (Star

Witness) to a slender victory in the first section

of the Class 3 Baker Handicap (1200m) for Tony

Millard.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on

Saturday (13 March).
