Army’s ‘charismatic work’ during India-China standoff boosted morale: RajnathM Tariq Khan

Lucknow: The “com-mendable” work done by the Indian Army during the India-China standoff raised the mo-rale and pride of the country, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday.

“During India-China standoff, commendable work of Indian Army has raised the morale of the country, and lift-ed its head with pride,” said the minister while addressing the attend-ees at foundation laying ceremony of a new hos-pital at Headquater Central Command, in Lucknow. Also present on the occasion were UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and chief of the army staff, Gen-eral MM Narvane and GOC-in-C Lieutenant General IS Ghuman.

Singh said the con-struction of the hospi-tal in the New Year gives the hope that it will be a year of the so-

lution and excite met. “The hospital is being

constructed in the new year. This new construc-tion gives us a message that if last year was that of obstacles, this year will be that of solutions. If last year was that of despair, this year will be that of excitement,” he said. He commended the authorities for relocat-ing rather than cutting trees while clearing land for the building.

The minister said that the world never imag-ined it will have to deal

with the pandemic, but in India, under the lead-ership of Prime Minis-ter Narendra Modi, pre-cautionary measures started on time.

“Today vaccination drive has started. India has developed its own vaccine, and many oth-ers are in the develop-ment process. We will not only fulfill our own demand for vaccines but also supply it to dif-ferent parts of the world because, for India, the whole world is a family,” he added. Turn to P6

RML DOCTORS RAISE RED FLAG ON COVAXIN New Delhi: The Resi-dent Doctors’ Associa-tion (RDA) of the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Saturday requested the medical superin-tendent to vaccinate them with Covishield. In a letter to the medical superintendent, the as-sociation said the resi-dent doctors were “a bit apprehensive” about Covaxin and might not participate in the immu-nisation drive in large numbers thus defeat-ing the purpose of the exercise which began in the country on Satur-day. “Covaxin is being preferred in our hospital over Covishield, which hasn’t completes trial process,” letter read.

MAHA SUSPENDS VACCINATION OVER ISSUES WITH CoWIN APPMaharashtra suspended COVID-19 vac-cinations till Monday because of technical issues with the centre’s software platform for managing the programme, news agency ANI reported on Saturday. Meanwhile, the state recorded 14 cases of adverse events, none of them fatal, on Day 1 of the vaccination rollout.

BIOTECH TO PAY COMPENSATION IF COVAXIN CAUSES SIDE EFFECTSIn the consent form to be signed by the vaccine recipients, Bharat Biotech said, “In case of any adverse events or serious adverse events, you will be provided medically recognised standard of care in the government designated and authorised centres/hospitals. The compensation for serious adverse event will be paid by sponsor (BBIL) in case if SAE is proven to be causally related to the vaccine.”

Jaipur: The world’s largest corona vaccina-tion campaign began across the country on Saturday. In a watershed moment for the desert state, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday launched the first phase of COV-ID-19 vaccination drive

across the state from the Chief Minister’s Resi-dence through a virtual programme which was attended by Medical and Health Minister Dr Raghu Sharma, along with Cabinet ministers, senior IAS officers, rep-resentatives of various institutions and BJP state president Satish Poonia.

With the launch of vaccination across the country at 11 am, the vaccination process was started at many centres in Rajasthan. Covid’s first vaccine in Rajasthan was given to Dr Sudhir Bhandari, principal of SMS Medi-cal College.

Gehlot said that even after getting vaccinat-ed, there is need to exer-cise caution to eradi-cate novel coronavirus and even after getting vaccinated, corona pro-tocol has to be followed to break the chain of

the virus. He said there should not be any ap-prehension about the vaccine, people should not worry as the dry runs have been con-ducted and it was de-clared safe. ‘’We all have been waiting for the coronavirus vaccine for long. Since the virus en-tered the district, the state government made all out efforts to contain it. Common man and corona warriors also helped in restricting the spread of the vi-rus,’’ Gehlot said.

AMID PAPER LEAK ROW, RSSB CHAIRMAN RESIGNSBoard faced criticism for JEN paper leak and anomalies in other examsFirst India Bureau

Jaipur: Chairman of Rajasthan staff selec-tion board (RSSB) Dr. Babu Lal Jatawat (re-tired IAS) resigned on Saturday following crit-icism over paper leaks of JEN exam leading to cancellation of the exam and postponing the patwari exam. The opposition BJP and RLP leaders have been demanding his remov-al. The state govern-ment has accepted his resignation with imme-diate effect, said official sources.

Jatawat had initially denied paper leak but later cancelled the JEN exam affecting more than 31,000 candidates. Jatawat confirmed his resignation to the media

but did not mention any reason for the move. He is believed to have re-signed due to all-around political pressure. The board had on December 29 last year canceled the JEN recruitment exam-ination held on Decem-ber 6 due to paper leak.

The board also post-poned the Patwari re-cruit.ment exam 2019 which was to be held in three phases in Janu-ary this year. More than 31 thousand students took the JEN exam for 533 posts. About 13 lakh candidates have been

waiting for the Patwari exam also.

Former CM Vasund-hara Raje, state BJP president Satish Poonia had cornered the state government over the paper leak. Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena had taken out a rally re-

garding the JEN exam and demanded that the exam be canceled.

RLP convener and Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal on Thursday tweeted to state Chief Minister Ashok Ge-hlot demanding the removal of Jatawat and file a criminal case against him.

Bird flu: Over 5,000 birds died in less than a monthJaipur: A total of 215 birds were found dead within a day in the state, reported the State’s Animal Hus-bandry Department on Saturday. The depart-ment also said around 5,130 birds have died in the state since Decem-ber 25, 2020.

The avian flu has af-fected 17 districts across the state who are strug-gling to contain the spread of influenza. Many states have al-ready banned the entry of poultry from other states, which are on ‘Avian Flu Alert’. This has also led to the loss in poultry business across the country.

As bird flu cases were detected across 10 states in the country, PM Nar-endra Modi said on Jan-uary 11 that the poultry farms, zoos, and water bodies will be continu-ously monitored to con-tain the disease. —ANI

ince hindsight is always 20/20, and now we thankfully have 2020 in hind-

sight, it’s time to celebrate. In particular, to celebrate a commercially irrelevant but wondrous technology that might allow humans to fly through the air under our own power, like birds. This is the stuff of dreams.

One of the few virtues of the “Wonder Woman 1984” film I saw recently is that it shows a woman flying up in the air like a bird or a plane, just like 50 years ago we saw Superman fly through the air. Last month, I saw dozens of real human be-ings fly many stories into the air, lifted aloft from their surfboards by airfoil-kites powered by wind. Amazing to see and, I imag-ine, amazing to experience. But the age-old dream of human flight is simpler:

Can people fly in calm air, using their own power?

LIKE A BIRDThe fact that birds fly shows that we might be able to, too. We’re just heavier, so it’s harder, which is in fact a very gen-eral rule. Insects can fly with wings even tinier than their tiny bodies, but big birds like albatrosses and condors need wings way bigger than their bod-ies. Fortunately, that rela-tion is such a simple, uni-versal concept — weight per unit area — that with a little physics, we can calcu-late how much harder it might be for people to fly than condors. Then maybe, with some clever materials and design, we might bridge the gap. We might redo the Icarus story, using carbon fiber instead of wax and feathers.

Let’s say a condor weighs

roughly 15 kilograms and a human 60, making a nice round ratio of 1:4 in weight. The heavier-is-harder prin-ciple, called wing-loading, is based on body area. It says it will be twice as hard (square root of four) for us to fly, all else remaining equal.

So before getting to new stuff, let’s see what might actually remain equal. Condors and humans are

both warm-blooded verte-brates, so it’s a good guess human muscles can gener-ate as much average power-per-weight as condor mus-cles. And given the aerody-namic elegance that nature has evolved into soaring birds’ wings and feathers, it’s unlikely we humans could do much better than them for either lift or pro-pulsion. So the shape of the

next Icarus will have an aerodynamic efficiency at best as good as that of birds. What might be im-proved by a factor of two?

Birds are made of meat, bones and feathers. Not Kevlar (stronger than ten-don), carbon fiber (stiffer than bone) or plastic like Mylar (smoother and light-er than feathers). And they can’t inflate themselves like a balloon to the size of an airplane. So let’s imagine using our fanciest modern materials to build an ultra-light mechanical “bird.” The size of an airplane, smooth and tightly-inflat-ed, containing an ultra-light lattice woven entirely and seamlessly from car-bon fiber. This wing’s stiff-ness would mostly come from inflating the plastic.

That would leave the carbon-fiber lattice to ac-complish four other goals: deforming in response to

wind, to keep the wing from crinkling when bent; stiffening thin parts of the wing which pressurization can’t stiffen; “flapping” and “banking” the wings using human power; and carrying micro-vibrations from wing surfaces into the fingers and toes of the pilot, who would then “feel” the wings’ airflow much like birds do, using nerves in skin and bone.

Designing and building such an intricate, delicate airfoil would be expensive and unprofitable. Clearly, it would only hold its shape on calm days. But it could be built — and it would work. And when that mystical structure ex-ists and is hooked up just right to a strong person pulling and pushing, it will fly like a bird, not a plane. That person will swim through the air.

merica is, therefore, the land of the future, where, in ages that lie before us, the burden of the World’s his-tory, shall reveal itself ”. This was written by the great German philosopher Wilhelm Hegel (1770-1831).

A single person, who has been President these four years has done more harm to his country than all the American Presidents of the 20th century.

He has divided America into two, one the America of Donald Trump and the other the America of Abraham Lincoln. Institutions have been all but destroyed, his second rate cronies have been given plum jobs. He is never to be blamed when things go wrong. Truth is a lie, a lie truth.

He has, according to him had nothing to with an attack on the Capitol. But it was a well organised insurrection. Out of the thousands who pillaged Capitol only two hundred have been arrested.

20th January has always been a day of celebratory re-joicing. Today, Washington reassembles an armed for-tress. Twenty thousand

troops are already on twen-ty-four-hour duty. Most are spending the nights sleeping in the corridors of the Capi-tol. A twelve-foot high wall of unbreakable wire has been built around the Capi-tol, with armed personnel guarding the wire wall. A similar exercise is being un-dertaken in the Capitols of forty-nine other states.

How could the World’s great-est, most powerful, richest, technologically most advanced, with the most sophisticated in-dustrial enterprises, with the largest number of Nobel Lau-reates and with some of the very best educational insti-tutes in the world come to such a pass. In the Trump Raj, we witness a dilution of truth, eth-ics, values and quality.

What is incomprehensible is that the Republican Party is fully behind Trump. Will it remain so after the 20th, when he will not be in power. One must not forget that only ten Republicans voted in favour of the Impeach-ment Resolution in the House of Representatives.

What will America do after Trump? The first task of the new President will be to clear the mess Trump will leave be-hind. At the moment he is bra-zenly not given up. His army of lawyers is planning to invoke

the first amendment to protect Trump for inciting an insur-rection. Whether they will suc-ceed or not only the next few weeks will make clear.

Now we come to President-elect Joe Biden and Kamla Harris. The lives in both are not safe. One had to look at the hoodlums who invaded the Capitol on 6th January. Each one is capable of tak-ing a shot at either of the most important persons in the World.

Another complex question to be solved out is that of Presi-dential Pardon. Trump is very

keen to pardon himself and his entire family, not the most at-tractive lot. I doubt if he will succeed in pardoning himself. He will get away with pardon-ing his family and his highly undesirable buddies.

It was an unusual sight to see a huge truck standing in the compound of the White House. The outgoing Presi-dent’s baggage to be taken out of the White House be-fore 20th January. Trump is a wealthy man and has many mansions in New York, Flor-ida and Scotland. But there is an unexpected snag. Ama-zon, Facebook, Twitter, and Deutsche Bank have made his accounts inoperative. Without Twitter, Trump has lost his worldwide reach and influence.

Finally, not once has he con-ceded that he lost the November Presidential Election. It was stolen, he continues to claim. How does one steal an election?

On Friday I lost one of my most intimate friends. Kamal Morarka suddenly passed away on Friday of a heart attack. He was 74.

He leaves a huge void in my life. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Bharatiji and his two daughters.

n January 7, Tesla Inc. and SpaceX’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk wrote on Twitter “Use Signal”. The two words cast such a spell that there was a deluge of WhatsApp users to switch to

Signal. WhatsApp began to be shunned after the news spread that it will share user data with Face-book. This led to privacy concerns. Such was the force of Musk’s endorsement of messaging app Signal, which promises end-to-end encryption, that millions signed up for Signal resulting in a mass outage on January 15. “New servers and extra ca-pacity,” Musk said, “were being added at a record pace.” Last week, Signal saw 7.5 million downloads.

Fear of losing large swaths of users to Signal, Telegram, and other messaging platforms appears to have forced WhatsApp to delay its new plan of probable sharing of personal data with Facebook by three months. Users were told to agree or disa-gree to its new terms by February 8. The deadline has been extended to May 15 due to “confusion” and “misinformation”. WhatsApp has been insisting that the new policy “does not expand our ability to share data with Facebook”. It has clarified that “the policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way”.

However, there are few takers for WhatsApp’s as-surances especially when it has different policies for Europe, where data privacy laws are harsh, and countries like India which are not signatories to any convention on the protection of personal data. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the new policy of Facebook-owned WhatsApp.

orld’s biggest inoculation drive got un-derway in India with the hope that war against the dreaded novel coronavirus is nearing victory. Launching the drive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi exuded

confidence that the government will ensure a “de-cisive win” over the Covid. An estimated over 1, 65, 740 frontline warriors in 11 states getting a jab of either Covishield or Covaxin on Day One. A to-tal of 3 crore frontline workers are to be vaccinat-ed in the first phase of the drive.

As doubts persisted about the safety and efficacy of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin despite the prime min-ister and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan’s tried to dispel fears. Bharat Biotech’s Chairman and Managing Director Krishna Ella saying that the vaccine is 200 percent safe also had little effect. Doctors at Delhi’s RML Hospital were apprehen-sive about Covaxin and asked for a jab of SII’s Cov-ishield. Covaxin is yet to submit the efficacy data of its third phase. The vaccine is in trial mode.

In keeping with ethical practices, Bharat Biotech vaccine recipients were asked to sign a consent form which admits that “the clinical efficacy of Covaxin is yet to be established” and in case of “adverse events,” the company has promised “standard care in govern-ment-designated centres/hospitals” and compensa-tion. To convince people about Covaxin, top ministers could have taken the jab first. Like Joe Biden, US President-designate and Kamala Harris did.

It is indeed creditable for the government to pro-vide two affordable vaccines for the protection of all people. If only the war between SII and Bharat Biotech could be avoided.

New Delhi: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan today slammed Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari for rais-ing questions over the safety & efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines be-ing administered as In-dia launched its nation-wide vaccination drive.

Lashing out at the Congress, the Health Minister accused the party of spreading dis-trust and rumors about the vaccine.

Further slamming Congress, Harsh Vard-han even quoted Eng-lish writer Charles Caleb Colton: "So blind-ed are we by our pas-sions that we suffer more to be damned than to be saved."

"Manish Tewari, the science behind COV-ID-19 vaccines is reso-lute. Our scientists have worked at lightning speed to expedite func-tions that contribute to

the development of a vaccine but not a single function has been cir-

cumvented. Safety above all else has been the guiding principle!"

Harsh Vardhan said in a subsequent tweet while responding to the statement made by the Congress leader.

Amarinder seeks free vax for poor people in PunjabChandigarh: Punjab CM Amarinder Singh wrote to PM Narendra Modi, seeking free COV-ID-19 vaccination for the poor in the state.

The CM acknowl-edged the receipt of 2,04,500 doses of Cov-ishield vaccine and also thanked the prime min-ister for making this vaccine available on priority to healthcare workers (HCWs).

In a statement, Mr Singh requested PM Modi to consider pro-viding free vaccine to the poor with a view to lessen the disease bur-den and also ensuring a check on the further spread of transmission, thereby allowing more economic activity.

Referring to some re-ports that apart from HCWs & frontline work-

ers (FLWs), the remain-ing population may not be provided free vac-cine, he pointed out in his letter, "the people of the state have gone through a very difficult times due to COVID-19 wherein economic ac-tivities have nosedived and the economy has still not recovered from this shock".

"It would be difficult for the poorer sections of the society to pay for vaccination," he said.

He said the pandemic has been an unparal-leled disaster and heavy expenditure had to be incurred in the state''s COVID-19 response.

"Ministry of Home Affairs may kindly ap-prove this to allow pending payments to be cleared," he urged the Prime Minister.

New Delhi: The Un-ion Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday said the farm laws will strengthen the agri-culture sector & im-prove the economic condition of farmers.

"The new agricul-tural laws have not only strengthened the agriculture sec-tor but has also im-proved the economic condition of the farmers. From 2013-14 to 2019-20 there has been a consider-able increase in pro-curement and pro-duction of wheat," Prasad tweeted.

The minister also attached a graph chart released by Ministry of Agricul-ture on January 15 related to wheat pro-curement and pro-duction from 2013-14 to 2019-20 in his tweet.

The data in the graph implied that

the wheat procure-ment in 2013-14 was 250.92 Lakh Metric Tonne (LMT) while that in 2019-20 was 341.33 LMT. This means that there has been an increase of 90.41 LMT in wheat procurement within six years.

Also, the wheat production in 2013-14 was 26.18 per cent while that in 2019-20 was 31.72 per cent. There has been an increase of 5.54 per cent wheat produc-tion within six years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. —ANI

We all...While allaying fears surrounding the COV-ID-19 vaccine, Gehlot said that the entire vac-cination drive would be conducted in a ‘per-fect way.’ Gehlot also revealed that a total of 167 booths had been prepared in the state for the massive inocu-lation drive.

With the collective effort, recovery rate in the state reached 97% and fatality rate less than 1% . He thanked health workers, sanita-tion workers and com-mon man for unitedly fighting the pandemic.

Gehlot said Ra-

jasthan was the first state in the country to impose lockdown to contain the spread of the pandemic. He as-sured people that the state government is ca-pable of tackling each and every situation.

Health and Medical Minister Dr Raghu Sharma said that vac-cination will be done only 4 days a week to ensure that other health services are not affected during the co-rona vaccination drive. “Vaccination will not be done on Thursday, Sunday and state holi-days,” he said. Sharma also gave detailed in-

formation about the work done by the gov-ernment during the corona times and also how the health infra-structure of the state was strengthened by turning this challenge into an opportunity.

During the pro-gramme, various min-isters including CM interacted with the doctors from the seven centers of the state and took information about the preparations for vaccination. Dr Sharma spoke to the doctors at Kekri, Go-vind Singh Dotasara spoke to doctors at Jodhpur, BD Kalla at

Sadulshahar, Pratap Singh at Bari, Subhash Garg at Bagidaura Anandpuri and Shanti Dhariwal spoke to doc-tors at the Kelwara State Hospital in Baran. gest vaccination drive in India against the novel coronavirus via video conferencing.

India takes...and other frontline workers to start with. Two shots manufac-tured in India, the Cov-ishield developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, and Cov-axin produced by Bharat Biotech, are be-ing used. The drive was remote launched by the Prime Minister with the chanting of a Sanskrit shloka that meant ‘’let all be hap-py, let all be healthy’’,

“I want to remind

people of the country that two doses of the Corona vaccine are very important. Don’t commit the mistake that you take one dose and forget the second one. As experts have been saying, there will be a gap of about one month between the two doses,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister stressed that people should not fall for propaganda over vac-cines, amid controver-sy over Bharat Bio-tech’s Covaxin, which has been cleared for emergency use while still in clinical trial.

“Our scientists and experts were assured about the safety and ef-ficacy of the two Made-in-India vaccines, only then did they allow the emergency use authori-zation. So stay away from propaganda, ru-mours, or misinforma-tion,” PM Modi said.

“Our vaccine devel-opers have global cred-ibility. Every Indian will be proud that life-saving vaccines given to 60 per cent children globally are made in India.”

PM Modi said Indian vaccines were cheaper compared to the other global vaccines, which

required stringent con-ditions for storage.

“India’s vaccines are developed keeping in mind our country. From storage to transporta-tion, these vaccines are made for Indian condi-tions. They will give de-cisive victory to our country,” he said.

Looking back at the time when the pandem-ic broke out early last year, PM Modi spoke of heart-wrenching mo-ments when many could not even perform last rites for their loved ones and virus-infected people were isolated or separated from their families.

However, these ‘promotions’ are to be given so as to ‘fill in the blanks’ left out or rather felt by the Bhu-mihar community in UP, who have a major ef-fect on 120 seats of the UP Assembly.

But what is even more interesting, is the fact that it is not ‘Uttar Pradesh,’ but ‘Gujarat’ that will be at the helm of affairs in the run up to the 2022 Assembly elections

Let us take these

points one by one: Since the time, Sharma has filed his nomination for MLC, word doing the rounds in UP’s political and bureaucratic circles is that Sharma may get Deputy Chief Minister’s position since in his face, BJP will get a chance to woo the com-munities other than ‘Thakurs.’ This ‘hyper-bole’ has emerged since Yogi’s political rivals have been peddling the narrative that it is only ‘Thakurs’ that are being heard in Yogi govern-ment since the Chief Minister himself hails from that community. On the other hand, Sharma, a Bhumihar, belongs to a small vil-lage from Mau in UP and thereby, ticks all the boxes needed to sway the votes back in the fa-vour of the saffron par-ty, that had been eyeing

elsewhere since the nar-rative began.

A close Modi confi-dante, Sharma, in his working and execution, will draw parallels with another bureaucrat, who is extremely close to Modi - K Kailashna-than. As an IAS officer, Kailashnathan in Guja-rat is holding his posi-tion tight even after eight years of his retire-ment, and keeping a close tab on each and every happening in the state. It is very much possible that Sharma will be given the same responsibility in Uttar Pradesh though with a different position and with a higher status.

Sharma will be work-ing as ‘eyes and ears’ of Central Government in UP ,working similar to his counterpart, Kailas-hnathan in Gujarat, watching law and order

situation along with ad-ministration and all im-portant issues, which may also include re-vamping the image of the Yogi government as well and emerge as a likely ‘trouble shooter.’

Kailashnathan since last eight years, is tak-ing care of Gujarat as Chief Secretary in the CMO. An IAS officer of the 1979 batch, Kailasna-than, also addressed to as KK in bureaucratic circles, has been given several extensions after retirement. He worked with Modi when he be-came Chief minister of Gujarat, then he was with the CMO when Anandiben Patel took the reins, and today, when Vijay Rupani is heading the state, Kailashnathan is still holding powerful posi-tion in the CMO. KK proved his worth tack-

ling many tough situa-tion like Patidar agita-tion etc. Incidentally, Anandiben Patel, for-mer Chief Minister of Gujarat, is taking care of UP as Governor and now it’s turn for Gujarat cadre IAS officer, Arvind Sharma. Moreo-ver, even at the organiza-tional level Sunil Oza, a former MLA from Bhavnagar in Gujarat, has been the election ‘commander’ of Modi ‘s election campaign in Varanasi in 2019 Gener-al election. And now it seems that Gujaratis i.e. Anandiben Patel, Sunil Oza and Gujarat cadre officer Sharma, taking their positions in top power circles of Uttar Pradesh, are ready to conquer the heartland of India. According to political observers, in a way, now Gujarat will rule UP by proxy.

In Haldea’s death, India loses upholder of public interest

A MAN OF HIS OWN STYLE !Rajendra Chhabra

Jaipur: CM Ashok Ge-hlot’s blue eyed boy and an exceptional perform-er in the area of urban development, Shanti Dhariwal is a man of his own mood and style. He surprised everyone by declining Congress-men’s request to come and sit on the dais of the Congress Dharma on Friday. He advised

everyone that only farmers should be given a preference to come and speak on the stage.

Dhariwal’s simplicity and his grassroots ap-proach is now being ap-preciated by all.

JAN 29, 1949-JAN 15, 2021

Rajendra Chhabra

Jaipur: Gajendra Hal-dea, the Indian Admin-istrative Services (IAS) officer from Rajasthan, died on Friday, at the age of 71.

He is survived by his wife. He was suffering from Cancer and also had Corona infection. He breathed his last at 10.15 am on Friday. Born on January 29, 1949, Hal-dea was cremated by the hospital staff and serv-ants due to Corona.

Many senior bureau-crats including former CS Rajeev Maharishi have mourned Haldea’s death.

The IAS Association while expressing condo-lences tweeted, “We con-dole the demise of Sh Gajendra Haldea, #IAS RJ:1973 who pioneered introduction of Public-Private Participation in

infrastructure project and played major role in formulation of Electric-ity Act, 2003. A prolific writer and columnist on infra projects.

Haldea was a civil servant, who believed that the private sector and competitive mar-kets could provide pub-lic services—efficiently and affordably.

He was Secretary for the 20 point programme and desert develop-ment in Rajasthan, he was Commissioner

IGNP and also collector of Bharatpur & Pali.

This officer from Ra-jasthan, retired in 2014 as adviser to Deputy Chair of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia and was also the Principal Adviser (Infrastruc-ture) in the Planning Commission, where he drafted bills, policies and tender documents to ensure competition in infrastructure ser-vices and to award pro-jects on merit.

Over a generation of country’s administra-tors have taken tips on infrastructure projects from this Rajasthan-cadre IAS officer of the 1973 batch.

Of his many initia-tives, he also authored the Electricity Act 2003 and the Foreign Ex-change Management Act, 1999.

FARMER MOVEMENT BENEFICIAL FOR CAPTAIN

The speed with which the farmers’ move-

ment is gaining momen-tum, has lit new hopes in the heart of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Ama-rinder Singh. Captain had announced during the last Assembly elec-tions in Punjab that this was his last election, so the Congress had also re-ceived sympathy votes in the state. But now, Cap-tain is thinking of trying his luck once again in the upcoming 2022 Assembly elections in Punjab, as the Opposition is feeling weak at the moment. The Akalis bid goodbye to the BJP government after the Agriculture Bill was passed in Parliament and with this move, they seem to be unable to create a favourable environment for themselves in the

state. At the ground level, Punjab’s AAP cadre is not spread in all parts of the state at this time, and where it is placed, it is not looking as strong. There-fore, Amarinder feels that the 2022 polls are going to be easy for him. It is also clear from the intelli-gence received by the Central Government that Captain is helping the farmers movement in every way. Apart from this, in thousands of Gu-rudwaras of the country and abroad, people are donating generously in the name of farmers’ movement. So, the farm-ers are neither short of courage nor wealth, that is when a farmer leader was asked how long his anchor will last? He re-plied saying, “We have been serving people for five and a half centuries, God willing, it will con-tinue further.”

WHERE DID THE GOVERNMENT LOSE OUT?

The Central Govern-ment was left in a

tizzy that they would con-vince the farmers. Repre-sentatives of the govern-ment were in constant touch with both fac-

tions of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, a major section of this move-ment. The Tikait faction was well-informed of the draft agriculture bill, and even the other fac-tion of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) led by Bhanu Pratap Singh, both of them seemed to agree somewhere with the government. The farmers did not want the matter to be taken to court, but the Bhanu Pratap faction of the BKU, took the matter to court, which made the

government’s path a lit-tle easier. But after this, the way the court set up a committee and the agita-tors were not comfortable about the faces in the committee and a member of the committee- Bhupinder Singh Mann, who is also the national president of the Bharati-ya Kisan Union, resigned, now out of necessity, the people from BKU are standing equally strong on the Chilla border.

WHY ARE THE MINISTERS AND LEADERS NOT GETTING VACCINATED?

Even if the total count of MPs of both the

Houses of Parliament, State Legislatures and Members of Legislative

Council are included, the figure does not exceed 5,000. The

government is going to administer Corona vac-cine to 3 crore front line works of the country and other Corona Warriors in the first phase of vac-cination and the govern-ment has also directed agencies to keep 10 per-cent vaccine in reserve, which can go bad due to faulty transportation or up keep. A person needs two doses of vaccine, and according to this, 6 crore 60 lakh doses will be re-quired for the first phase. After this, people with certain diseases and those above 50 years, will be inoculat-ed. There are 27 crore people in t h e a g e

group of over 50 years in the country. When the government first accept-ed the vaccine of Bharat Biotech as a backup vac-cine, Serum and Bharat Biotech waged a fierce battle and the two compa-nies revealed each oth-er’s ‘secrets’ and the gov-ernment then had to bring them into an un-derstanding. Now the government has made it clear that both Cov-ishield and Covaxin will be administered and in the first phase people will not be able to choose any of these particular com-pany vaccines for them-selves. The budget min-ister of Belgium has tweeted that the Euro-pean Union has pur-

chased the se-rum vaccine

at the rate of Rs 159, while the

same vaccine has been sold by the company to the Indian government at Rs 200. The company has informed in its guide-lines that the vaccine also has 20 types of side effects. America’s Presi-dent elect Joe Biden and his wife have gone them-selves vaccinated so that the fear of the vaccine in the common Americans is lowered and trust is built. Putin got his daughter vaccinated in Russia. But why are poli-ticians in India avoiding to get vaccinated? Shivraj Singh Chouhan is calling it a sacrifice for the com-mon people, Akhilesh is trying to avoid it by call-ing it a ‘BJP vaccine.’

...AND FINALLY

The speculation mar-ket is rife with sev-

eral words doing the rounds on who will be the new leader of the Con-gress party in the Ra-jya Sab-ha? Sen-ior lead-er Ghu-lam Nabi

Azad, who belongs to Jammu and Kashmir, is going to retire from Rajya Sabha this February and he is not happy with the Gandhi family these days. Interestingly, in the near future, no RS seat from Jammu & Kashmir is going to be vacated. Anand Sharma is also a strong contender for the post, he has a term in the Rajya Sabha till March 22, if he becomes the lead-er of the Congress in the Upper House, he may get a chance from Rajasthan again. The biggest claim is that of Mallikarjun Kharge, as he has already handled this responsibil-ity in Lok Sabha, and through his elevation, Congress can get the benefit of his Dalit con-nection in UP elections. The most important thing is that he is still as much as loved by the Gandhi family. Jairam Ramesh and Digvijay Singh also have a claim to the position, but at the moment, Kharge seems to have the upper hand.

ave you ever ruined one of your favorite handbags? Devasta-tion! It doesn’t mat-ter how much you paid for your hand-bag, the bottom line

is you love it and want to keep it in mint condition! De-signer handbags and shoes especially heels are in fash-ion and the upper price has no limit.

WIPE DOWN THE PURSE AFTER EVERY USE:One of the best tips for main-tenance and cleaning of your handbag is to wipe it down with a cloth after eve-ry usage. If the material, al-lows, you can even dampen the cloth a little bit and gen-tly wipe the entire bag. Do not rub but make sure you let the bag dry later on.

MAINTAIN THE SHAPE BY STUFFING PAPER:Another fabulous tip to maintain your expensive handbag is to

stuff newspaper or original filling in it after every use so that the shape doesn’t get altered. This is especially important for leather bags as they can easily get crum-pled.

Soles are no different than souls and the better you care for them, the better they will stay by your side as the roads get harder. Even though you might have different shoes for different days and occasions, you should never let beautiful soles (shoes) sit un-moved in one place.

SHOES HATE MOISTURE:Keep your shoes away from moisture as moisture can result in the growth of bac-teria which can cause the shoe material to break down easily when you finally wear them. Use desiccants like silica pouches or gels to keep the moisture and bac-teria-free.

KEEP THEM AWAY FROM DUST:It is never advisable to wear the same pair of shoes regu-larly but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be cleaned and kept dust-free. Exces-

sive dust can lead to the loss of the natural shoe colour and make them look old.

Beautiful accesso-

ries don’t ask much, all they need is a little attention from your day’s busy schedule and they are happy that way. Don’t let your add-ons think that you no more care for them!
