END OF AN ERA!
Kartikey Dev Singh
he nation was still under British occupation when in the Bengali winter of 1935, a child was born in Birbhum’s Miriti village, who no one thought would play a pivotal
role in shaping a nation for five long decades. A boy who would, inspite of all odds, continue to remain the pow-erhouse for his political party and who had the distinction of working with five members of the Gandhi family— Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gan-dhi. It is a testament to Pranab Da’s political acumen, administrative skill and his indomitable will power, that whenever Congress needed a strong man to lead important ministries, it was Pranab Mukherjee who was given the charge.
Whether it was Indira Gandhi, who recognised his talents and accord-ed him the Rajya Sabha seat, or successive generations of Con-gress leaders, everyone was in awe of Mukherjee, who held a great command on various subjects and conducted his politics with dignity.
Mukherjee’s career started as a junior minis-ter in Indira Gandhi gov-ernment in the 1970s
and ended when he demitted office as President of India in 2017.
Often described as “man for all sea-sons”, Pranab Mukherjee held impor-tant portfolios like finance, defence, external affairs, deputy chairman of planning commission, leader in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and final-ly the President of the Union of India. In all these years of his active public life, he continued to have friends even in the most staunch opposition lead-ers, probably because the child, very thoughtfully, was named after the most important aspect of life—Pranab—meaning Love in Bengali!

PRANAB DA
leader of vast e x p e r i e n c e and knowl-edge who strived for consensus in the polity and
left an imprint on In-dia's modern history, Pranab Mukherjee was India's 13th President and was conferred its highest civilian honour.
The 84-year old veter-an Congressman who played a crucial role in the functioning of the UPA governments till he was chosen the Presi-dent in 2012, Pranab Mukherjee reflected de-cency in politics that had no place for ran-cour, acrimony and per-sonalised attacks even as he remained firmly committed to the party's ideology. He oozed a nat-ural warmth and his intellect, knowledge, power of persuasion, memory and skills made him a go-to man in the Congress, especially in the last about 15 years of his political life.
He was a Union Min-ister for over 20 years and had a rare distinc-tion of having served as Union Minister for Fi-nance, External Af-fairs, Defence and Com-merce. Another rare distinction was that he served as leader of both Houses of Parliament -
Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha (1980-85) and Leader of House in Lok Sabha. He was also Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission.
Having witnessed the country's politics for close to five decades as a participant and an ob-server, Mukherjee had
an encyclopedic knowl-edge of time and events.
He was elected 5 times to Rajya Sabha and twice to Lok Sabha and was a member of Congress Working Committee, the highest policy-making body of the party for 23 years.

10 FACTSABOUT FORMER
PRESIDENT
Mukherjee, who was born
in a Bengali family greatly involved in India’s struggle for freedom, started his professional career not as a politician, but as an upper-division clerk in the offi ce of the Deputy Accountant General, in Kolkata.
A major in Political
Science and History, Mukherjee served as an assistant professor of Political Science in Vidyanagar College, Kolkata and as a journalist with the Bengali publication, Desher Dak, before entering politics.
In 1969, Mukherjee
stepped into the world of politics, by getting elected to the Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket. It is believed that the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi played a huge role in getting him elected.
After the death of
Indira Gandhi, when Mukherjee did not get his due, he founded his own political party, which he named Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress.
Between 1969 to 2012,
Mukherjee headed four major ministries, which included Finance, Commerce, External Affairs and Defence. In fact, he was voted the best Finance Minister in the World by Euromoney, in 1984.
In July, 2012, Mukherjee
contested the presidential elections against PA Sangma, in which he won 70 per cent of the electoral college vote to become the 13th President of India.
During his tenure as the
president, Mukherjee promulgated the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013, which provides for amendment of Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act and Code of Criminal Procedures, in case of laws related to sexual offences.
Mukherjee believed in
the power of justice. As the president, he rejected many mercy pleas, which included mercy pleas of Afzal Guru and Ajmal Kasab.
Though he retired from
politics, citing health issues, he did not really refrain from attending political events. He in fact attended an RSS event, which took everyone by surprise.
In 2019, he was conferred
the Bharat Ratna by President Ram Nath Kovind during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

All classes have to come together in our fight against poverty: CMNaresh Sharma
Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said that India is a bouquet of different castes, religions and languages, which, ‘all of us must work to-gether to strengthen’. Special efforts are need-ed to bring minorities into the mainstream of development, as it is nec-essary that people of all classes come together to win the fight against pov-erty, he said.
Gehlot was address-ing the virtual ceremo-
ny organized by the Mi-nority Affairs and Wakf Department at the Chief Minister’s resi-dence on Monday for the inauguration of 8 buildings and the foun-dation stone laying of two buildings in differ-ent districts of the state. “these construction works would prove to be a milestone in achiev-ing the objective of ex-panding infrastructure facilities for minority communities. With the expansion of these fa-cilities, people in mi-
nority dominated areas will get benefits in edu-cation and health ser-
vices,” he said.On Monday, State Mi-
nority Girls Hostels
were inaugurated at Hasanpur Mafi, Lad-havada and Sahajpur in
Alwar district and Ka-man in Bharatpur dis-trict. In addition, the State Nursing Colleges at Tijara and Dhadoli-Ramgarh in Alwar and Primary Health Center buildings at Alawada were also dedicated o he public. During this period, the foundation stone of the Govern-ment Minority Girls Hostel in Sawai Mad-hopur and the buildings of the Commmon Ser-
vice Center in Jhunj-hunu, which is estimat-ed to cost Rs 3.8 crore, were also inaugurated.
“State Government is providing resources as per the requirement for education and health facilities in all areas of the state. In some areas there is a lack of educa-tion among the minori-ty and development of facilities for education in these areas is the pri-ority of the state gov-ernment. Recently, the state government has taken important steps
in this direction by giv-ing statutory status to the Rajasthan State Ma-drasa Board in the Leg-islative Assembly. Pro-gress of any society is possible only through the spread of educa-tion. The Madrasa Board will now be able to actively seek out the minority community’s access to modern edu-cation,” Gehlot said.

India thwarts...It is the first major inci-dent involving the troops of the two coun-
tries after the Galwan Valley clashes on June 15. India and China have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks in the last two-and-half months but no signifi-cant headway has been made for a resolution to the border row in east-ern Ladakh.
The two sides began a process of disengage-ment on July 6, a day after a telephonic con-versation between Na-tional Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on ways to bring down tensions in east-ern Ladakh. However,
the process has not moved forward since mid-July. The PLA has pulled back from Gal-wan Valley and certain other friction points but the withdrawal of troops has not moved forward in Pangong Tso, Depsang and a cou-ple of other areas.
At the five rounds of Corps commander-level talks, the Indian side has been insisting on complete disengage-ment of Chinese troops at the earliest, and im-mediate restoration of status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh prior to April.
The tension between
the two sides escalated manifold after the Gal-wan Valley clashes.

It is thus that Gupta, from his new offi ce, is nowadays extremely busy in carrying out probably the most important work in bureaucratic circles, fi lling up the ACR. The extremely sensitive and tough task of ACR fi ling of 450 IAS offi cers has landed on the Gupta’s shoulder primarily since he has to do so for his time as the former CS. Being the last day of completing the whopping 450 ACRs, IT must have taken a huge amount of time for the senior bureaucrat to complete the formalities since each ACR takes about

Jaipur: Although the railway is yet to func-tion in its full capacity since lockdown was im-posed in March, still, the passenger load is gradually rising in whatevet train traffic is operational.
There has been an up-swing as the country is approaching Unlock 4.0 in its fight against co-rona. Passenger load in the six trains operating from Jaipur has touched almost 80 per cent of the capacity. This has increased the demand for starting new trains from Jaipur although no such inten-tion has been hinted by the railway administra-tion. All eyes are now set on the coming fes-tive season in October as the passenger load is expected to increase substantially during that period.
Railways started
train operations on May 12 with only 30 spe-cial trains which in-creased to 230 on June 1 and it has remained un-changed since.
Ninety more trains were planned to be started in August with an aim to normalise the situation but didn’t get formal approval by the central govt.
There are various theories being floated for the new trains not commencing yet. Some believe that the encour-aging privatisation of
the trains is the main reason for not starting new trains immediately while railway officers still cite the corona epi-demic as the reason. Sources say that there will be big changes in the Railway Board by December so it may take time to start the new trains. Although this is almost certain that with the existing number of trains, pas-sengers will face diffi-culty in commuting during the upcoming festive season.

Jaipur: Just days after CM Ashok Gehlot launched 14 Independ-ent Housing Schemes and Four Mukhamanri Jan Awaas yojna and Chief Minister State Employee Housing Schemes, the RHB has
announced the start of it’s registration process for the same. On Mon-day, Rajasthan Housing Board Commissioner Pawan Arora informed that registration work for 6,663 houses of 19 housing schemes will start from September 1, 2020. The schemes have been launched in vari-ous cities of the state.
“Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had launched the Mukhy-amantri Jan Awas Yoja-na and Chief Minister State Employee Housing Schemes. Out of these schemes, online applica-tions for 10 schemes and

opportunity to buy Du-plex housing for only 14.99 lakh rupees. It is noteworthy that facili-ties like Chowpatty, Open Air Theater, Chil-dren’s Park and Open Gym are also being de-

Jaipur: PC Mody’s term as Chairman CBDT has been extend-ed for another period of six months by the Min-istry of Finance. The order came just 4 hours before Mody’s retire-ment. Mody who is the face of faceless scheme being recently imple-mented and who has brought a paradigm shift in the tax collec-tion as Chairman CBDT and Member Investiga-tion has been trusted for another 6 months.
This means that he is the man of great confi-dence of PM for fram-ing Budget 2021, Imple-mentation of Faceless Scheme, Promulgation of new 26AS Form, Stricter Investigation
Norms and much more.Has 3 important tasks
to manage. Firstly, im-plementation of Face-less Assessment would be challenging as on one side, where entire scrunity system will change for tax payers at the same time educat-ing & managing these assessments with theme “Honor the Honest” would be very difficult. He will have to carve a nice model to imple-ment the same in spirit envisaged by PM.
Second challenge would be management of Investigation Wing, which recently went through an overhaul. Govt has already put its eyes on black money and Mody’s policies will have to be such that country’s hidden treas-ure is extracted from the tax evaders. Third difficult task would be Budget 2021 which would be launched when country’s econo-my is sinking. Bringing out tax benefits, rota-tion of cash flows and sustainability of indus-tries would be a big challenge. The tasks are tough but the man is tougher. With Modi-Mo-dy team India’s shine is likely to be seen soon, specially in terms of tax collections.

Jaipur: AICC state in-charge on Monday for-mally embarked on the tight rope walk he has been assigned by party High Command. On his second day of the state tour, Maken met senior party leaders and minis-ters for 7 hours and dis-cussed the crucial issues of the state govt and state party organisation. There were about a doz-en leaders including Sachin Pilot who didn’t reach PCC to meet Mak-en despite the schedule.
Maken has been swift in garbing the new role of state in-charge after the recent political crisis was blown over. He start-ed taking the feedback from the senior leaders at PCC on Monday. Par-asram Mordiya, Hemar-am Choudhary, Subhash
Mahariya, Namo Naray-an Meena, Narendra Budhaniya, Rameshwar Dudi, Deepnedra Shek-haat, Dhiraj Gurjar, Kul-deep Indora, Ganesh Ghoghra, Ashk Ali Tak and Mohan Prakash were the prominent lead-ers to interact with Mak-en at PCC. Former exec-utive president of PCC and senior MLA Mordi-ya was the first one to meet Maken. Both Mor-diya and Subhash Maha-riya gave important sug-gestions to the state in-charge to strengthen the party organisation in the state. Both the lead-ers were visibly uncom-fortable in expressing themselves freely in the presence of PCC chief Dotasara since all three hail from the Shekha-wati region and share the political turf of Lax-mangarh as well. The
political rivalry between Dotasara and Mordiya is common knowledge in political circles.
The meeting of two Pilot loyalists Deep-endra Shekhawat and Hemaram Choudhary was a talking point for all. Interestingly Maken politely asked Dotasara and Vivek Bansal & Tarun Kumar to give them privacy when He-maram and Deependra met him. He ensured a discreet and free expres-sion to both Pilot loyal-ists. Both veterans later told the media that they no more hold any grudg-es for anyone anymore since they had already apprised the high com-mand of their opinion earlier in Delhi. They said that they gave some serious suggestions to Maken about the govt and party along with
raising issues facing the farmers. Both teasingly told the media that they weren’t there to discuss food recipes with Maken.
Apart from ailing Bhanwar Lal Meghwal and Covid struck Khachariyawas minis-ters Dr Raghu Sharma and BD Kalla submitted their department perfor-mance report although some ministers reached without any prepara-tion. Now all ministers will submit their report card to Maken today. He will start meeting the party leaders and MLAs division wise from today. Jaipur division leaders will start the process to-day. Maken clearly has come with an all absorb-ing attitude which will come handy for him while meeting a divided Congress during the cur-rent tour.

he world famous Ramnagar Ramli-la – which many consider being the oldest in the world, being over 200 years old. Tra-
ditionally, it begins on Anant Chaturdashi and continues for 31 days.
From the stage, ar-tistes, sound and light technicians to its sets and decora-tion, everything is exclusive about this Ramlila. It is known for its lavish sets, dialogues, and the visual spectacle. It has been recognized as an in-tangible world cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The Ramlila is staged in the backdrop of the famous Ramnagar fort, under an
open sky, and with only traditional lamps (panch-light) being the light source. Young boys play the character of Lord Ram, his brother Laxman, Bharat and Shatrughna. They practice for the Ram-lila under the guidance of the priest.
Through all the 31 days, the Ramlila draws a large num-ber of people from Varanasi. They walk
to the Ramlila venue daily from the ancient city after crossing the Ganga. It is not uncommon to find foreigners in the audience as many visitors come from far off places to watch the enactment.
Preparations begin al-most two months in ad-
vance with a team of dedi-cated people, including priests, who looks after the
staging of the Ramlila. Even during its enactment, a priest recites couplets
from the Ramcharitmanas. In the Ramlila, the entire
Ramacharitmanas is re-
cited, instead of the usual 10 for abridged production. In Ramnagar, a number of stages have been construct-ed by the town, each named after the major sites of events in the Ramayana epic. The permanent struc-tures and several tempo-rary structures serve as
event sets, to represent lo-cations like Ashok Vatika, Janakpuri, Panchavati, Lanka, etc., during the per-formance. Hence the entire city turns into a giant open-air set, and the audi-ence moves along with the performers with every epi-sode, to the next location.
