ON the evening of June 3 a group of men attempted to rob a store within Glenvista Shopping Centre.
During this attempt a customer was injured and taken to hospital. He was discharged the next day.
Security within the centre and Centre Manage-ment acted swiftly to ensure that the centre was secured and that all customers and staff were safe.
Glenvista Shopping Centre management at-tended to the scene immediately after the inci-dent, and are fully cooperating with SAPS. The security CCTV recorded footage of the incident from various angles, and a copy of the footage has been handed over to SAPS.
The staff and management of Glenvista Shop-ping centre would like to thank the SAPS, SOS Protec Sure, and Glenvista Community Policing Forum (GCPF) for their assistance during this unfortunate incident.
As this is an active investigation we are unable to release any more information in this regard.
We would like to reassure the public and our shoppers that their safety is a priority when vis-itng the centre, and additional security measures have been put in place. The centre is operating as usual and is open Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 20:00.
AT about 19:00 on Tuesday evening June 3, six or more African males armed with handguns robbed Checkers store in Glenvista Shopping centre.
It’s alleged they had followed a cash-in-transit vehicle to the shopping centre, which was supposedly collecting cash from Checkers. Shots were fi red and in the
process a resident, who was shopping in Checkers, was shot in the leg. He received treatment on the scene and was taken to Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton, where he was reported as being stable.
The robbers were in a brown double cab bakkie and another possible vehicle. As they fl ed the scene, they hijacked a black Toyota Tazz (TMZ103GP). The woman driver was released moments later on Biggarsberg Drive.
Glenvista Community Forum (GCF)
patrollers were fi rst on the scene and wit-nessed the hijacking, pursuing the suspects out of the area towards Rossettenville.
Many of the Checkers staff were in a state of shock, and GCF victim support unit counselled the affected staff as well as shoppers.
“I’d like to thank GCF, D&D and Mondeor SAPS for their speedy response. I was in Woolworths upstairs from Check-ers when the shots were fi red, and one of the Woolworths male staff acted remark-
ably quickly and dropped the security shutters to keep us shoppers safe,” said a shopper.
“This is ridiculous! The amount of times I’ve been in Checkers at this time is crazy! I honestly am starting to feel scared for my life and my family. My thoughts are with all those affected,” said a resident.
The following morning at about 08:00 a Glenvista resident contacted Glenvista Community Forum with information re-garding the hijacked Toyota Tazz.
The vehicle was found, apparently abandoned in Hay Street, Turffontein. The scene was handed over to investigators.
“Thank you to the alert Glenvista resi-dent who sent us this information and to our team. From all our patrollers who were on scene until late last night, to our victim support ladies who counselled the victims, to our administrators who run our systems and data base, and to Mondeor SAPS. This community truly stands together,” said a spokesperson for GCF.

Waterstone now a Curro branded school“IN 2007 we opened Waterstone College, with the dream of creating an independent school with a Christian ethos that would develop a name for excellence across all spheres, and become one of the leading schools in Gauteng.
“Despite some growing pains and sharp learning curves, we are extremely proud of what we have achieved in the last seven years, and grateful to God for his provision, protection and wisdom,” said Michael Darby, executive head of the school.
He went on to say, “The directors of the college have had numerous approaches by various groups over the years concern-ing the purchase of the school, and have always turned these down out of hand. However, we believe with confi dence that becoming a part of the Curro Group is going to benefi t our staff, learners and parents considerably, and take the school to a new level.”
Curro Holdings CEO Dr Chris van der Merwe said the group’s latest acquisition, Waterstone College with 1 210 learners, will be part of Curro’s top quality branded Select Schools, following the acquisition of Woodhill College in Pretoria East in November 2011 and Grantleigh in KZN in December last year.
“I am very positive about the school as it is located in a strong growth area. Waterstone College’s ethos is well aligned with that of Curro’s and is situated on a campus of 39 hectares, of which 12
hectares can be used for educational purposes.
“Also of importance is that Water-stone is one of the leading sport schools in Johannesburg with top rankings in cricket, netball, tennis, and football. The school has a unique High Performance Programme, which utilises its top class facilities towards the development of young sportsmen and women,” Van der Merwe said.
How will Waterstone College be af-fected by this?
“The Christian ethos of the school will not change. It is the express vision of the school to offer a superior education within a Christian environment. All of our policies and practices in this regard will remain the same. Curro Holdings have four values, and one of them is a Christian ethos and values. The others are child friendliness, positive discipline and creative thinking.
“There will be no impact on school fees, which will continue to increase in line with the rate of infl ation in the sector. We have always been able to keep our fee increases to under 10 per cent, and are confi dent this will continue to be the case. Waterstone College has always had the immediate community as its major target market, and we are determined to continue to offer an excellent value education.
“Development bonds and levies will be phased out and class sizes will remain as
currently the case: a planned maximum of 18 in grade 00 and 0; 23 in grades 1-2; 25 in grade 3; and 26 from grade 4-12; some classes in the FET phases may, as is currently the case, be slightly larger for short periods as learners move subjects,” added Darby.
The staff will experience very little change in their daily lives. Being part of a broader group of schools will have many advantages, and all of their salaries, benefi ts and conditions will remain the same, or improve.
The biggest change that will be experi-enced by staff and learners is that Curro have requested a move back to the national syllabus, which is examined and assessed by the IEB at the end of grade 12.
“As you know, the major reason for the school’s move to CIE was our concern about the declining standards of the national syllabus, but the Curro Centre for Educational Excellence (CCEE) have a team who are continuously improv-ing and developing the syllabus, doing benchmark testing, and ensuring that Curro schools are not blindly following the CAPS syllabus. We believe that this enriched syllabus, along with an un-precedented level of academic support, make the IEB once again a good option for our school. We have the advantage of having experienced some challenging new concepts and methodologies under
CIE, and we will retain much of what we found benefi cial.
There will be a minimal impact on parents or learners, and in general all subjects that have been selected will re-main on offer. The return to the familiar selection of subjects at grade 10 level will commence with the current grade 9 group. A letter will be issued in this regard to grade 9 and 10 parents within the next few days.
“While we are sad in many ways to be leaving the CIE programme, we do un-derstand the rationale and appreciate that the additional support that we will receive from Curro in this regard is signifi cant.
“We will still look to offer A Levels for those learners who would like to extend themselves in this way,” said Darby.
Due to the fi nancial muscle that Curro have as a listed company, Waterstone College will be able to improve their facilities even more, at an accelerated rate. They already have some of the fi nest facilities that any school can offer, but will be adding the following over the coming months and years:
A hockey astro fi eld will be built on the site of the current west fi eld in time for the 2015 season. There will be an increase in the number of classes to fi ve in the prep school and six in the high school, with the intention to begin building the additional classrooms which will be required in the
next six months. The new Junior Hall will hopefully be
completed during the course of the year. The land between Main Road (the
R554) and Main Service Road will be paved and made into additional parking, with a target of the end of 2014.
“We are looking to purchase additional land for future developments. We hope to include in this the development of further hostels, as well as additional classrooms and parking/drop-off areas.
“The college will also look to add further fi elds and squash courts, and hopefully a Curro Castle nursery and pre-school will be built for those aged three months to grade 00. The Curro Castle is an incredible concept that offers young children great value educational care from 07:00 to 19:00. These will also hopefully be developed over the next 18 months.
“In addition, some of the founders of the school have agreed to donate the funds to build a pavilion on the main (FIFA) fi eld, with change rooms for the teams playing on the fi eld and with a viewing area and dining area for spectators and players. We are extremely grateful for this generosity,” concluded Darby.
Deputy heads of Waterstone College, prep and high are Juanita Swanepoel, Jeanette Williams, Pieter Rademan, Terry Kingma, Jill Saunders and Kerry Bailey.

A RESIDENT in Kamstra Street, Glenvista ext 4, was receiving excessive water accounts last year and after querying them and not getting anywhere, he went out to check the water meter on his pavement, only to fi nd it sunk into the ground and not accessible.
“It was obviously faulty and the me-ter reader from Joburg Water had never read it and I’d been receiving estimated accounts. I dug through the grass and managed to locate the meter myself,” said the resident.
The resident contacted Ward 23 Coun-cillor Paul Smit and asked if he could as-sist with arranging a new water meter. In January 2014 a Joburg Water meter reader took a reading and the resident was sent an account for R10 000. “I knew I didn’t owe this much and eventually I managed to get a new water meter installed on February 14.
“The new account was never linked to the new water meter, and then on May 20 I arrived home to fi nd a fi nal pre-termination notice stuck to my front wall.
The notice read, if I didn’t pay R9 948.03 within 14 days, there would be a discontinuation or restriction of services and/or legal action being instituted against me without any notice.
“I contacted Clr Smit again and he managed to obtain a job card, saying the old water meter was faulty and a new one had been put in. I’m still being billed for close on R10 000 and I refuse to pay,” he said. The resident says he will go to Joburg Water to see if he can sort out the problem.
“I fi nd the ineffi ciency of Joburg Water annoying, and now I have to waste my time going there myself to try and sort out the mess. I would like to thank Clr Smit for his assistance though, without his help I wouldn’t even have got this far,” the resident concluded.

TURNING 74 years just before June 14, the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), Robin Kelly from Renaissance Retirement Village in Glenvista donated his 100th unit of blood at Southdale Donor Centre on Thursday June 5.
For him it has become second nature to give blood. He started 25 years ago, donating an average of four times a year. “I started donating when the centre was at Robertsham Primary back then, it moved to President High School, to Rosettenville Centro Centre before coming here,” he noted.
Mr Kelly can relate to South African Na-tional Blood Service (SANBS) mission – an association of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors, which provide all patients with suffi cient safe quality blood products and medical services related to blood trans-fusion in a cost-effective manner. He said people are frightened of donating. “This is the right thing to do, though I started late as an old man. Once I started, I then continued, though medical reasons can be a hindering factor,” he said.
His wife Glenys, who is also a blood donor,
said, “Whenever we come to donate blood, it is always a family affair. This time we have our daughter-in-law, Delaine Cunningham, who also enjoys donating blood.”
On June 14, countries around the world celebrate WBDD.
It raises awareness of the need for safe, good quality blood and blood products, and honours the many voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. WBDD has a further purpose: to create widespread awareness throughout the world about the need for availability and appropri-ate use of safe blood and blood products, and the need for many more people to make a commitment to regular voluntary unpaid blood donation.
Established in 2004, WBDD falls on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner.
Landsteiner created the ABO blood group, which is used today to the safety of blood transfusions. WBDD is an annual event that is jointly sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
It is one of eight offi cial international pub-lic health campaigns marked by the WHO.

What did I say, the Big Chill could be here anytime soon…… and here it is! Although by the time the paper hits the streets we could be back to warmer days once again. You just never know, exciting eh!

I contacted Woolworths Head Offi ce media and received a reply.
“Woolworths approach to GMO has always been very clear. Our preference has been to remove GMO from Woolworths food or label the products containing GMO. This has been the practice since we started labelling GMO in 1999. Our approach helps customers make the choice that is right for them. Woolworths checks all ingredients back to the source, and where we cannot guarantee that the ingredient was not derived from a GM crop, we label the product as ‘May be Genetically Modifi ed (GM)’. We use this statement if the origin of the crop is from an area where GM versions of the particular crop is cultivated. Our labels comply with labelling legislation and regulations and we will gladly com-ply with any changes to government guidelines on labelling of GMO. Golconda Jewellers has been in the South for 35 years, fi rst in Main Street, Rosettenville, then later at Rosettenville Corner and Comaro View Shopping Centre. “We decided to sell the two branches when The Glen Shopping Centre was built, and we had our shop there for 10 years,” George and Theo said.
Business was good, but in the end the business hours and high rent made their decision a lot easier, when their original premises at Comaro View be-come available, and so they moved back again. “It was the right move for us at the right time. We’ve been here now for four years and haven’t looked back,” they said.
Golconda Jewellers is a manufacturing jewellers and George and Theo also design jewellery, offer-ing a “one shop” service for their clientele. “We believe in personal service, our customers are our advertising and we run our business on very strict Christian values,” said George. Their prices are very competitive.
When you bring your stones to Golconda Jewel-lers, the only time your ring will leave their shop is when you take it out. This defi nitely appeals to me!
I’ve personally seen their workmanship. My husband had my wedding ring designed and made there and it’s really beautiful. He also had a pendant and earring set done in sterling silver, also gorgeous and unusual.

Nedbank at The Glen Shopping Centre needs to jack up its service. I believe the electronic payment machine isn’t supplied with paper from in the bank but from an outside source. But still, as a client of Nedbank, surely using this machine is part of the service I pay for from my bank charges. Once again I went along to pay accounts only to see - no paper available! I was furious, this
isn’t the fi rst time, and I stormed into the bank to speak to someone about the problem. I was told to write down my complaint and put it into a box on a table in the bank. I was assured the manager or someone who could assist, would phone me on Monday. Well, it’s now Friday and I’ve heard noth-ing. Not good enough, Nedbank!Bouquet of the WeekShirley Clough gives Absa Southgate a bouquet. “I used to dread going to the bank, and often had to wait for ages to be served. The recently gazetted immigration regulations will assist in sliding the country back economically. Unbelievably, these regulations have been published without the much-awaited critical skills list. The critical skills list will sort out the professions and trades that qualify for work permits.
Another illogical regulation is that in order to qualify for a spousal or life partner permits, applicants must be able to prove a relationship of at least two years.
How this is to be done is unclear. The legal fraternity are already claiming that this may well be unconstitutional. I tend to agree with them.
Already I am aware of a case where a British citizen married to a South African has been prevented from returning to South Africa after a brief visit to the UK. Despite the applicant having timeously and correctly applied for her visa, she is being penalised, through no fault of her own. Home Affairs has simply been too slow and ineffi cient to process this and thousands of other applications.
The Minister needs to get back to the draw-ing board to fi x this from scratch before more damage is done.Manny de Freitas MPShadow Minister of Home AffairsDemocratic Alliance

your VIEWS
I am disappointed, which is an understatement, regarding the article (Comaro CHRONICLE May 28, page 3, ‘Mourners litter streets in Winchester Hills’) about residents who have the nerve to complain about the litter dumped during the funeral of my brother on May 17, and making such an exaggeration as if they were left lying there waiting for the municipality to clean on Monday.
Who still write such in this era? Clearly you stuck in the apartheid era despite 20 years into democracy; you saw it fi t to identify the race of mourners who at-tended the funeral. Did you get into the bus and confi rm that it was blacks only or did you see the sign? Or it is your belief that buses are meant for blacks? This was pathetic reporting.
It has to be noted, we the family, ensured that the place and neighbouring streets were left clean with all the polystyrenes picked up and put in refuse bags on Sat-urday afternoon. Therefore, you chose to take the picture while people were there or immediately when the buses left. How dare you sit and watch to see how this bunch of Africans will behave so that you can run to the press and moan. I found your article and comments disgusting.
We as the family, we would like to put on record that we view the reporting that has malicious and racial intentions to discredit the family (who are proudly Africans/blacks), any blacks residing in the South or the whole of South Africa. Racism is an insidious cultural disease. It is insidious that it doesn’t care if you
like blacks. So writer, remain there alone and do not drag us along with your in-fected mind.
One resident on the article talks about taking the country forward, with this kind of despicable and distasteful racial writing about how you perceive other races is the one that is taking the country backwards to where we came from (the Apartheid era), where the belief was that Africans are dirty, fi lthy and litter everywhere, therefore do not deserve to be in the suburbs.
To the writer note “I am an African” and I will not take your comments lying down and yes, you will see mourners in buses and in huge numbers at any of our funerals, traditional functions, parties and weddings. We will continue practicing our culture and slaughter if required to
do so (by-laws will be observed but will not deny us our rights to Africanism), therefore embrace yourself to see more, as dignifi ed and responsible Africans we will clean up after our mess.
You chose to forget that the helper in your house is African, the gardener is also African and refuse removals are done by Africans employed by the municipality; shame I am intrigued to know if you wondered how much of dirt do they pick up after you.
Please, we are in mourning; it is just two weeks after our loss, for two goodness sake, how sad that we as the family have to respond, as the reporter and editor lacked foresight to verify the facts with the family or edit the article; perhaps the reporter and editor felt we have better things to worry
about, or it was not of importance to give the family an opportunity to respond so that both sides are reported. Oh, not critical because they are ‘Africans’; hence there were buses full of Africans and they litter anyway.
Anyway I hope you cleaned the whole street for us and we thank you for being neighbourly! Le ka moso! Do assist with the cleaning for others as well.

Comment:We do apologise to our readers who
were insulted by this report, but can assure you that it was not done in a malicious manner. We will keep a closer eye when it comes to quotes from residents.Editor
Disappointed with ‘Mourners litter streets’ article
Your article of May 28, regarding ‘Mourners litter streets in Winchester Hills’.
As much as I acknowledge that there was littering on the day of the funeral (May 17), I think the writer deliberately omitted to in-dicate that the place was brought back to its normal clean state by African people.
The family did not anticipate the numbers of people who came to pay their last respect to the deceased, hence there was no provision for refuse plastic bags. However, the family ensured that the place was cleaned just the following morning.
Anybody who amongst the neighbouring streets got to clean
his/her place did that out of his/her own good will, otherwise there was a team in readiness to heed the call for cleaning up.
What bothers me most is that the report smacks of racism, as it refers to the mourners being all African, which can be interpreted to mean that Africans behave despicably. I think it is about time we stop sen-sationalising issues but rather learn, understand and accept each other. African people according to their culture and their Ubuntu nature, support each other when there is a death and/or a funeral, and that is not going to change.
African people are now free to live in any area in this country,
and they have to be embraced as they have always embraced people of other nations while they were being discriminated against. The very African people are the ones who, by the way, keep the neigh-bourhood within Winchester Hills clean, because they earn a living from cleaning and also appreciate a clean environment. I wish we could begin to understand the different backgrounds and environments which we all come from and also be aware of how those differences can stimulate certain behaviours. If we could do that there will be less pettiness. No nation will think it’s better than the other. Theresa Mngomezulu

THABA Ya Batswana held its Mountain Tea on Tuesday May 27 and as well as handing out certificates and awards to its staff members, Alta McMaster from Epic Foundation (Empowering People in Crisis) received a community award for all she has done and still does within the community.
Reuben Louw from Thaba Ya Batswana presented the award to Alta who was thrilled to receive it. “Epic Foundation plays a huge part in the com-munity. We make up Comfort Bags, which are distributed to trauma centres as well as other packs, and we also run The Fairy Godmother Project, where we
collect evening gowns, shoes and handbags. Young girls who wouldn’t normally be able to at-tend their matric dance because of lack of funds, can come along and be kitted out. It’s such a feel good project,” she said.
The Mountain Tea ended with lunch being served and enjoyed by all who had attended.

Hawks seize R46m heroin in Crown GardensTHE Hawks and Crime Intelligence were lauded for a major drug bust. Heroin worth R46,5 million has been seized by the Hawks at a house in Crown Gardens, Booysens. A 41-year-old Pakistani national has been arrested on Sunday June 1.
Captain Paul Ramaloko from the Hawks said, “In a joint intelligence driven operation on Sunday evening, June 1, members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks and Crime Intelli-gence (CI), arrested a 41-year-old Asian male suspected of dealing in drugs and unlawful possession of fi rearms and ammunition.”
As a result of the information ob-tained, the team raided a fl at in Crown Gardens, Johannesburg and the follow-ing items were subsequently seized:
Narcotics:• 38 kg heroin with an estimated street
value of R46,5 million
Firearms and ammunition:• One 9mm Norinco;• One 9mm Parabellum;• 38 x hollow point rounds;
• 20 x 9mm rounds.Vehicles:• One black BMW; • One black Golf 5.
Investigations are continuing as it is suspected that the suspect might be part of a bigger syndicate.
The suspect appeared in the Johan-
nesburg Magistrate Court on Tuesday June 3 on charges of dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of fi rearms and ammunition.
Almost two years ago, two Nigerians were arrested at a house in Altson Road, Moffatview, drugs worth R5 million were confi scated.
The drugs were found in a maroon sport Land Rover on the premises owned by the suspects. Cocaine and tik was among the drugs found. The raid, which started around midnight, was lead from Germiston.
At the time Clr Bev Turk said, “I commend the SAPS for a job well done.
“This is one of the biggest drug busts in the South, and I am pleased with the arrests.
“This shows that there are still good and effi cient members in the force. “I would also like to congratulate the person who handed the lead to the police force.”
R5 million worth of drugs previously found at a home in Moffatview.
WHEN hiring a person to work as a domestic, gardener or staff member in your home or business, for security purposes it’s requested you take the person down to the police station for police clearance (there is a small cost involved of R59). Please get the persons permission fi rst.
It is also advisable to check out all ref-erences. If the domestic you are thinking of hiring doesn’t have references, think twice about hiring him/her. It’s always a good idea to get a copy of their SA ID or passport. The person who is looking for work often seems to use the excuse that their previous employer has moved to the coast or out of SA. Let’s all protect our families from people who commit crime.
* Women, please be extra vigilant while doing your grocery shopping. Take note of who is around you. It’s been reported while shoppers are out doing their shopping, an African man posing as someone who needs help will come up to them to ask them about an item on a high shelf. While he keeps you busy two African women try to grab your belongings from you.
* Urgent request : Please trim back overgrown trees and branches hanging over your boundary wall, that way it will not be easy for criminals to hide behind. As an extra security precau-tion, please install extra lighting at the
entrance of your property. Let’s all keep safe together.
* Street lights which aren’t working are a major concern in some areas. Please report all lights that are faulty 011 375 5555 or log on to City of Joburg website and log the fault online.

Crime tips which may
help to keep you safeAFTER a domestic worker in Mondeor alleged she had been held up in a house robbery (Comaro CHRONICLE May 28, page 6, ‘Suspects posing as meter readers rob Mondeor home’), Mondeor detectives conducted a thorough investigation and it was discovered that the domestic worker was lying about the house robbery.
The domestic worker alleged she
was robbed by two suspects, and also alleged the other domestic worker who works at the same home had gone to home affairs to sort out his papers at the time of the robbery.
After the investigation it was dis-covered the domestic workers had in fact stolen the goods from the house themselves. They were both arrested on Friday May 30.
Mondeor detectives and members from the Flying Squad visited their addresses and other addresses where all the stolen goods were recovered.
Another two suspects have been ar-rested for receiving the stolen goods from the two domestic workers.
The Mondeor SAPS warns the public that if they report false cases or receive stolen goods, they will be arrested.

Great new section exposing criminalsI am so happy with the “busted-fi ghting crime together” section of your newspaper.
I believe we can combat crime if we keep exposing these criminals, and in this case I’m
referring to your surveillance footage on shoplifters in Co-maro Crossing.
I frequent shops often and fi nd security guards unnecessar-ily following the wrong people
around, and I feel shops must use these surveillance cameras a lot more and keep footage all the time so these people can be exposed.Happy reader

Klipkoppiefees ensured excitement and entertainment
What’s ON in the SOUTH*WALKING Tour on Saturday June 14 to see St Mary-the-less, the second oldest building stand in Johannesburg which celebrates its 125th birthday this year. It started as a small chapel and grew as Jeppestown fi llled up, a truly fascinating little building. In 1986 professor Radford told us it would fall down. Well, it’s still standing and we are spending a good deal on restoring it. Built in two stages, which you can really only understand when you go inside, it has a small bell tower topped with a quaint dome, shin-gled in contrast to the corrugated iron roof. Another dome adorns the exten-sion. Inside there is an excellent organ, plus handsome brass lectern donated by Rev Darroch and beautiful stained glass windows behind the altar with the face of early parishioners disguised as diff erent saints. The vestments are a joy to those who enjoy embroidery and handwork. Round the corner are many enchanting buildings. They may be shabby, but they have escaped the hands of the renovators who strip the cast iron balconies, and exchange the slender timber of the shop fronts for wretched aluminum. Baubles atop the roofs and that lovely sign “Jooste and Bryant” on the roof ridge. Truly the only beautiful advertising in the city. Many will remember Norman’s Grill in the Grand Station Hotel. No longer grand, but still recognisable and we will even pass the Radium Hotel. Some of us
have a fondness for the Radium Beer Hall, but haven’t seen the old Modern-ist hotel. Jeppestown is old Joburg, as it was before the First World War, the demolishers and the skyscrapers. Meet Val Hammerton and Clare van Zwieten on Saturday June 14 at 14:00 and park in Park Street between Gus and Madison Streets, Jeppestown (opposite the Church). KLIPKOPPIEFEES 2014 was the place to be on May 30 and 31.
Klipkoppiefees was an event for the whole family. Visitors were entertained by great South African artists. The adventure seekers could enjoy 4x4 trails, and competitions, fun runs and mountain bike trails. There was delicious food and enough to drink and hundreds of exhibitors.
Klipkoppiefees had a humble beginning in 1999, taking the form of a family day at the Alberton Dam with 18 vehicles taking on the 4x4 track, and now this event is one of the most talked about festivals on the social calendar.
The event is the brainchild of the Dutch Reformed Church Alberton West to generate funds solely ear-marked for charity work in the Alberton community and surrounding areas as well as their bi-annual outreach to Malawi.
Now, 15 years later, the event is hosted on the Meyersfarm in Alberton.
The event has a church-bazaar like feel, with the entertainment that you will come to expect of a festival. With entertainers like Snotkop, Bok van Blerk and Bobby van Jaarsveld to mention a few.
If you are more of an adventure seeker and out-doorsman, you could enjoy the 4x4 extreme, 4x4 treasure hunt, 4x4 challenge, the CMR fun run or the mountain bike race. The Binneland braai competi-tion was the platform where braai-enthusiasts could show what they were made of. The competitors were paired with actors and actresses from the Binneland cast. Borries, (Corné Bornman) Alberton’s own braai-master, also made part of a team that competed.
The majority of the funds that were raised on the weekend went to Ligstad, a community care program in Alberton. Ligstad has multiple services that they deliver to the community: they have an aftercare facility for children, they care for the elderly, they prepared meals as well as food hampers, pro-vide counselling, distribute clothes, and they also
maintain their own vegetable garden to assist with the meal programme.
Jan Louw House at Abraham Kriel Children’s home, Alberton home for the aged and the Malawi outreach are other charities that will benefi t from the funds raised. Funds will also go to the distribution of bibles in all 11 offi cial languages, in and around Alberton.
This year’s Klipkoppiefees was such a great success, thank you to all the visitors. There were so many visitors that the Klipkop-piefees was forced to close the gates at 17:30. If you missed out on this year’s fun and excitement, make sure to join us next year.
If you missed out this year, you can come and join us for a fun-fi lled weekend next year. The Klipkoppiefees will return next year on the last weekend in May.

be various competitions, such as volleyball, a car show and shine, car sound, potjiekos and a baby and beauty competition. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winner of each event. There will also be Live Music with a Talent Show and lots of children’s entertainment with fun and games.
A large variety of stalls, including beauty and nails, food, electronics, toiletries, houseware and much more will be selling their goods and services at bargain prices. There will also be plenty to eat, with a large variety of food available. For the youth, Damelin and Intec will be available to assist with further studies.
More about Metro Family Church Metro runs a mobile programme called Side-
walk, where children from informal settlements,
impoverished areas and children’s homes are ministered to on a weekly basis. Through the Metro Africa Community Support Initiatives vital support in the form of food parcels, blankets, toiletries, toys and other basic necessities are distributed. Retirement homes are also included in the support initiatives.
The belief at Metro Family Church is to have a heart for the lost and destitute and reach out to all those in need, thus creating more relevance
outside the walls of the church building. So bring your family, friends and neighbours
for a day that will be fi lled with fun, food and entertainment.

Dunamis launches CD at the Lyric TheatreTHE Dunamis Christian CD launch was held at Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre on May 28 which included both the chil-dren’s and adult band members.
Dunamis entered into a na-tional competition called Bands for Christ in November 2013 and they won the competition. The prize was a studio record-ing album and a music video to be featured on One Gospel and TBN.
The process of the album
took place in March this year at a studio in Pretoria and after the completion of the album, brought them through to the launch.
The children’s album was recorded during September, October 2013. It wasn’t a solid process at fi rst but the album was fi nalised in April this year.
The recording of the album took place when Megan Kate, a member of the children’s group brought the idea forward
to Leon Meyer (lead guitarist/producer).
According to him, the lyrics were very strong and the pro-cess took off from there- 80 per cent of the songs were written by the children and the remain-der 20 percent by Leon. The children’s album was recorded at a studio in Germiston.
This is what members from the band said on their expe-rience when recording the album:Megan Kuit, Leon Meyer, Zoe Mngamezulu and Bontle Mtsdongo.
Megan Kuit: “It was an encoun-ter with God. I never really believed that I could write songs but then one night God expressed His feelings to me and from there on, God said I should take it forward.”
Zoe Mngamezulu: “I knew I could sing since I was a little girl. When I heard there were auditions for the CD, I went along with it and never realised how good I was and since the audi-tions, God has given me this gift to minister to the world.”
Bontle Mtsdongo: “At fi rst I was nervous because this is something I had never done in my life before but then when I started recording, I be-gan experiencing something different. God started show-ing me that it is not about singing, it’s about spreading His word. I created a mind set to start spreading the word of God. This has helped me grow as a person and fear has been broken out of my life because I took a chal-lenge that I’ve never taken in my life.”
Devin Wade du Plessis: “I was
very nervous but when I had done it, I realised that
it wasn’t about me, it was about
spreading the word of God and when I recorded
I just felt free and fell deeper in God’s presence.”
Elvira duToit: “It was a very fulfi lling
experience. It’s really full of life and it is
really spirit led so in terms of connecting
to the frequency of heaven, this record-
ing and CD really accomplished that… to bring it through to
the people. We tapped into heaven and now
we are giving it to the people.”
Amanda Knipe: “It was very humbling because I realised
how great God is and that He can use anybody to achieve
what He wants. He can exceed all expectations that you might
have. It’s not about how well you can play, it’s about your heart and being willing that
God can use you for the pur-pose of His Kingdom. I believe that we have done this in order to be a blessing for the nations
to further His kingdom. At the end of the day, all glory and
honour is to Him.”

BLESSINGS blankets are often associated with babies, but many miracles of healing, physical, spiritual and emotional, have been attributed to the blankets throughout the years.
Staff at the AMCARE Centre of Faith, Hope & Love in New Market Park working with abused women and children, in conjunction with Alberton Methodist Women’s Auxilliary, are now appealing to the community for donations of double-sided polar fl eece
fabric in order for victims to be taught how to make these blankets.
“We believe that a project such as this can help these women heal emotionally and teaches them a skill they otherwise wouldn’t have had,” says Marihet Infan-tino, social work manager at AMCARE.
“We will then donate these blankets to charitable organisations,” Marihet explained. Anyone who can assist, are asked to contact Marihet on 011 869 5856.

Eikenhof WI learn about community forumsAT the May meeting of the Eikenhof
Women’s Institute, guest speaker Michelle Pelser from Mondeor Community Polic-ing Forum spoke about the role she plays in the forum, and gave the members advice if they fi nd themselves in a distressing situation.
“I enjoy being a part of the forum and also the Domestic Watch. We have Domestic Watch meetings each month for domestics and gardeners, and they learn what to do if they are approached by criminals at the home they are working from,” said Michelle.
“The Domestic Watch meetings are very informative, and we encourage all home owners who have domestic staff
to send them to our meetings. For more information on the Domestic Watch, I can be reached at 084 292 9144.
“When a victim is in need of trauma counselling after being involved in an accident, hijacking or robbery, Mondeor Police Station has volunteer trauma counsellors who are available to go out to assist the victim or the family.
“Mondeor Community Policing Forum Sector Two has volunteer workers who also have full time jobs. From 20:00 every evening we have volunteers on the road who are there to assist when a crime takes place.
“Community Police Forums are split into different sectors and have
patrol vehicles available 24/7. Sector one consists of areas: Bassonia, Glenvista, Glenanda, Liefde en Vrede, Mulbarton, Aspen Hills and Gleneagles and the CPF can be reached on 071 675 7329/ 071 675 7327. Sector Two – Suideroord, Winches-ter Hills, Mondeor, Ridgeway Ext, Alan Manor, Meredale, Naturena and Southgate Mall, 071 675 6142/ 071 675 6145; and Sector Three – Kibler Park, Mayfi eld Park, Alveda Park, Eikenhof, Jacksons, Rispark and Patlyn, 071 675 6152/ 071 675 6149. If you have a problem and someone is try-ing to gain access to your property, don’t
hesitate to phone the correct number for the area you reside in,” Michelle added.
“Be more vigilant and when you leave work, don’t take the same route home. If you think you are being followed, go around the block again and if you still think you are being followed, drive to your nearest police station and report the vehicle. Try and take down the registration number, which can be checked,” advised Michelle.
“Check your home alarm system fre-quently. Every two weeks is advisable, especially in rainy and stormy weather.
Also check to see if your panic remote is working. It’s no good if a suspect is trying to gain access to your property, and your panic button doesn’t work because the battery is dead,” Michelle added.
All the members enjoyed the informa-tive meeting and went away wiser about safety issues.
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday June 11 at 09:30 at St Andrew’s Church, 45 Burger Street, Suideroord.
For more information, phone Joy Boswell 011 433 8107 or 084 526 5857.

GISELA Fossati (18) a student at Abbotts College Johannesburg South, plays the violin, and extremely well!
She began playing in grade one, after hearing one of her friends playing the violin, and she fell in love with the musical instrument.
Gisela’s violin was made in 1945 and is one from a set of 12, handmade by Colin-Mézin French and called Le Victrieux.
Gisela has played with the National Youth Orchestra, SA
Tattoo at Montecasino, The Rand Club and she still plays with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra.
“I try and practice for at least 45 minutes a day but at the mo-ment I’m studying hard for my matric exams,” said Gisela.
She also plays at functions, such as birthdays and weddings and enjoys playing classical / romantic music.
When she isn’t hard at work or playing the violin, she enjoys tennis and hockey. She’s also involved with community work,
visiting St Mary’s Children’s Home twice a week to assist children with their homework.
The CHRONICLE asked what she would like to do after she’s matriculated. “I’ll hopefully be accepted for university and want to study medicine. Later after I’m qualifi ed it would be great to become a doctor on a cruise ship for a while, that way I’d get to see the world too.”
If you are interested in book-ing Gisela to play her violin at an event, phone 076 939 5263.

ON Friday May 23, Covenant Samaritans and the Praise Warriors from Covenant College High went to Sparrow Ministries in Maraisburg Roodepoort, as part of their outreach programme. “We spent the afternoon at the crèche and hospice and had a fun-fi lled party for the children, where we handed out party packs, painted faces and just gave some love, care and attention to all. We hope to come back real soon,” the learners said.

Seeff advises to pay careful attention when signing documents
When buying or selling a property there is always mountains of paperwork and offi cial documents involved. Th is can lead to a lot of frustration and sometimes even “buyer’s remorse” when you are not properly informed of the implications of the fi ne print at the time of signing. An off er to pur-chase becomes a binding contract once signed by both parties and that is why it is crucial to be cognisant of exactly what you are signing before putting pen to paper.
Shawn Mackrell, Seeff ’s Licensee for Alberton, Soweto and JHB South says the golden rule before signing any documents is to “look before you leap”. He advises strongly that you make use of
the services of a reputable estate agent who will explain wording and ensure that both parties are protected. It is vital that the following aspects are included in the contract: - Th e exact purchase price, both cash and any other considerations given by the purchaser to the seller. - Any conditions of sale, for example that the purchase price is dependent on the buyer getting a bond or selling a property.- Th at the deposit will be held in a trust pending the completion of the sale and that interest will accrue to the buyer.- Th at all fi xtures and fi ttings that are part of the sales agreement are clearly stipulated, as this is oft en an area of contention. By adequately specify-ing these items, confl icts can be avoided. Do not assume that anything is included, if there is any
uncertainty, choose to specify that in the agree-ment. - Th at the owner declares that to the best of his knowledge, the house is structurally sound. Al-though sellers oft en try to protect themselves from any claims by a “voetstoots” or “as is” clause, this will only protect them from claims where they were unaware of such defects. If the seller was aware of defects, hid them or failed to disclose them, this protection falls away. - If any understanding is given by the parties to one another in respect of repairs that will be made, make sure that the www questions can be an-swered when reading the clause in the document, i.e what must happen, who has to pay for it and by when must it happen.

How to fi nd the ‘next big thing’
12 May 2014 Most homebuyers would like to be sure that the value of their property will appreciate over time, and this means that they need to spend at least as much time choosing an area as they do decid-ing what features they want in a home. So says Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property group, who notes that although all property values fl uctuate in line with overall economic conditions, some areas do defi nitely hold steadier than others in bad times, and perform better than others in good times. “Typically, these are the areas that lie close to centres of economic activity, and are perceived to off er the best combination of other sought-aft er attributes such as good schools, con-venient shopping and recreation facilities, short commutes, low crime and high levels of home
maintenance. “Unfortunately, however, there is a really severe shortage of homes for sale in many of these areas at the moment, and they are becoming increas-ingly pricey, so many buyers are looking further afi eld in the hope of identifying those suburbs that will become tomorrow’s most desirable ad-dresses – and best investments.” Writing in the Property Signposts newsletter, he says that in this respect it oft en pays to try those areas adjacent to the most sought-aft er ones, but that suburbs further afi eld may also be good prospects, “especially if they are close to a new business node. Another good indication that an area is up-and-coming is when many existing owners there are renovating or extending their homes – and raising the average home price in the process.” Meanwhile, he says, prospective buyers should not lose sight of other factors that will aff ect
their quality of life wherever they choose to live. “Find out if the area you like has a strong community spirit, or if residents like to keep to themselves? Ask if the schools in the area achieve good results? How long it will take you to get to work? Are there any plans in place for major commercial or infrastructure develop-ments that could aff ect property demand and values? “It is, of course, impossible to fi nd out every-thing about an area before you move there, but an experienced, qualifi ed estate agent familiar with the area will be able to give you most of the information you want in a very short time – and, of course, point you in the direction of the best buys the area has to off er.” ISSUED BY CHAS EVERITT INTERNA-TIONALFOR FURTHER INFORMATION CALLBERRY EVERITT ON011-801-2500 OR VISIT www.chaseveritt.co.za

I recommend them to anyone who has marriage, fi nancial problems & unfi nished jobs
Do you want to give birth and you feeling helpless, heartbroken & fi nancially miserable. Don`t lose hope!
Several years of unhappiness in my marriage led to loneliness,
continous crying and suffering. My husband had left me, my kids
were always sick and I had no money.
I tried everything from Healers, Priests and Gurus but nothing seemed to work
for me.Luckily I saw a testimony on the local TV station
about prayers offered by S.RAJ when he prayed fora divorced lady who was united with her ex-husband after 9
years of divorce and the old man’s son who was also saved from drugs.
I paid R200 consultation fee and S.RAJ accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems
before I spoke a word to him.He used a mirror to show me faces of people who were trying
to pull me down.S.RAJ performed a 1 day special prayer for me, cleansed me
from bad luck and I was givena powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fix my financial problems. Within 3 days of S.Raj prayers my husband
confessed everything and asked for forgiveness. My kids are now healthy & I recently got a
Senior Job promotion.

your NEIGHBOURHOOD
The 2013 Championship Boerewors winner, Bob Makheta, with his grand prize of a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.
Is your boerewors recipe the next number one?THE search for South Africa’s number one has started! If you think your recipe has what is needed to take its rightful place as the next Championship Boerewors on Shoprite and Checkers meat market shelves, now is the time to enter the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition!
Nine of South Africa’s number one community personalities are also excited about this year’s competition and can’t wait to taste this year’s winning recipe. They encourage you to submit your best boerewors recipes to ensure that South Africa’s number one boerewors can be revealed.
All aspiring champs are invited to show what they are capable of. A brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider is at stake and only the tastiest, best quality, traditional boerewors will make the grade.
To stand a chance of driving away with the incredible fi rst prize and the coveted title of Boerewors Champion, those interested should enter their recipes before the closing date of Friday June 13. Entry forms are available at the meat market of any Checkers, Checkers Hyper
and Shoprite store, or online at www.championshipboerewors.co.za or cbw.mobi
Anyone with an exceptional traditional boerewors recipe, and the skills to make their boerewors from scratch, can enter. Make sure, though, that your recipe isn’t just any beef sausage - it has to be a unique traditional boerewors. The South African Chefs Association (SACA), a recognised authority on food in South Africa, will take charge of the judging process, and they will be making sure that all entries adhere to strict guidelines for making the real thing.
To be traditional, boerewors must contain at least 90 per cent meat - always containing beef, lamb and/or pork and the fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30 per cent.
Furthermore, the distinctive combinations of spices like cori-ander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper and fl uids like vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce are what differentiates boerewors from other variants. So, if you want to qualify for Shoprite and Checkers’ competition, please ensure that your recipe is valid and unique.
Participants have an exciting road ahead of them to get to the 2014 Championship Boerewors grand fi nale. First participants will face off in regional rounds that take place countrywide on Saturdays August 9, 16 and 23, and only those who stand vic-torious after these hard-hitting clashes will go on to compete against their provincial coun-terparts on Saturday September 13. The ten boerewors warriors that emerge triumphant from the provincial rounds will face their toughest adversaries yet in the fi nal battle for title of 2014 Boerewors Champion at Sun City on October 4.
To add to this already excit-ing competition, the nomination function on the competition’s electronic entry platform pro-vides an opportunity for the general public to nominate their favourite Boerewors-maker to enter the competition and thereby stand a chance of winning one of this year’s great prizes.
The challenge has now been set. It’s time for that secret recipe to be shared with the rest of South Africa, and for it to be entered into the 2014 Championship Boerewors competition!
WOOLWORTHS won the inaugural Good Practice Award for Skills Development at a ceremony hosted by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education Training Authority (W&RSETA). The award recognises the contribution Woolworths has made to learning and development best practice in the retail sector.
Hosted by the W&RSETA, the awards were adjudicated by a pan-el including representatives from the SETA, the Consumer Goods Council, Black Business SA and the body of Accredited Private Providers in Education, Training & Development (APPEDT).
The award recognises the work Woolworths is doing for unemployed graduates through their workplace experience programme, the National Quali-fication Framework (NQF)
learnership programmes offered to employees, as well as their Further Education and Training (FET) programme called “Inside Retail”, which was the fi rst of its kind in South Africa.
Commenting on the award Sibongile Antoni, Woolworths Learning and Development Manager, said, “We’re humbled to receive an award that recognises our investment in Woolworths employees and retail skills de-velopment. The wholesale and retail sector in South Africa is regarded as a growth sector of the economy and a major employer. It is the fourth largest contributor to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with a contribution of around 13.3 per cent, and employing approximately 19 per cent of the total active workforce of the country – so there are many op-
portunities for skilled workers.”Antoni adds: “Through the
public-private partnership with W&RSETA, we aim to edu-cate a new generation of retail employees and make a positive contribution to our community by generating jobs and supporting the National Skills Development Strategy.”
W&RSETA CEO, Mr. Joel Dikgole said the awards were aimed at saluting stakeholders of the SETA to recognise the col-lective strides by all in ensuring that skills development remains a reality in the sector. He also referred the nominees as trailblaz-ers of this initiative and called for an overwhelming response from all stakeholder companies, training providers and learners in future as the awards would be held annually.

AB de Villiers was the South African Cricketer of the year during the 2014 CSA Awards. Photo: Barry Aldworth/BackpagePix
AB de Villiers became the eighth player to be named South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year when he received the award for 2014 at a gala Cricket South Africa (CSA) banquet in Sandton on Wednesday June 4.
The previous winners of CSA’s most prestigious award at interna-tional level were Jacques Kallis (2004 and 2011), Makhaya Ntini (2005 and 2006), Shaun Pol-lock (2007), Dale Steyn (2008), Graeme Smith (2009), Hashim Amla (2010 and 2013) and Vernon Philander (2012).
It was a special evening for AB De Villiers who won four awards in all – the only award for which he was nominated but did not win was the Castle Lager ODI Player of the Year, which went to Quinton de Kock who scored four centuries in the period under review including three in consecu-tive innings.
De Villiers was also named Castle Lager Test Cricketer of the Year, was recognised by his peers as SA Players’ Player of the Year and, by popular vote of the public, SA Fans’ Cricketer of the Year.
Imran Tahir was named Blue Label Telecoms T20 International Player of the Year, Steyn won the RAM delivery of the year (he had all three nominations in this category) and Kallis won the KFC ‘So Good’ Award for his century in his fi nal Test match appearance against India.
Marizanne Kapp was named Momentum Women’s Cricketer of the Year for the second suc-cessive year.
“This has been another great year of wonderful achievements for our top players,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “AB’s statistics are sheer class and speak for themselves. He is the world’s best batsman, ranked No. 1 in Test match cricket and No. 2 in ODI cricket. His highest rating of 935 points in Test cricket is the joint 10th highest of all time alongside Jacques Kallis
and Matthew Hayden.“But that only tells a part of
his amazing skills. He has always been an entertainer and innovator par excellence, while at the same time he has the ability to dig really deep in pressure situations. We all saw his strength of character illustrated against Australia at Ad-elaide in 2012 and again against India at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium last season.
“We are proud of the scale of his achievements and, more importantly, the manner in which he does it. He is an exceptionally talented cricketer who always adapts to the needs of the team. Our Proteas have again displayed true world-class performances in the past year and I salute not only the Award winners but all of them for a year of great performances. The fact that there were as many as fi ve worthy candidates for the top award speaks volumes.
“I warmly congratulate all our winners including the likes of our umpires, grounds staff and scor-ers, without whose contribution the game cannot be played. Our domestic cricket remains blessed with great talents and congratu-lations to all the winners in that category.”
In the domestic professional category the Sunfoil Dolphins almost swept the board. Lance Klusener was named Coach of the Year, David Miller the RAM SLAMMER and Kyle Abbott both the Domestic Players’ Player of the Year (for the second year in a row) and SACA Most Valuable Player. In addition, the Dolphins won the CSA Fair Play Award and Wilson Ngobese, head grounds curator at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead, was named CSA Groundsman of the Year.
Justin Ontong of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras was named Sunfoil Series Cricketer of the Season and Heino Kuhn of The Unlimited Titans the Momentum One-Day Cup Cricketer of the Season.
The Khaya Majola Lifetime Achievement Award went to Abe Williams for his services to the game over nearly 50 years. He represented Griquas as a player for more than two decades and also played for the SA Coloured Cricket Association against the South African African Cricket Board. He was involved in every aspect of cricket as player, ad-ministrator, umpire, groundsman and as coach in which capacity he laid the foundation for the current Griquas coaching programmes. He is still an active umpire at club level.Award winnersProfessional awards: NationalSA Cricketer of the Year: AB de Villiers

AB the big winner!
Union wins trophyFOR the second year running Union Rugby Club from Wemmerpan in the South won the fl oating trophy for the winner of the annual derby against A-Square Forklifts Alberton Rugby Club.
Union outplayed Alberton by 27-17, after leading 10-3 at half time in a tough encounter at the Alberton Stadium.
Both clubs have a proud history with Alberton established in March 1912 and Union in 1950. In 1999 a merger took place between the two clubs, and Alberton-Union reached
the Pirates-Grand Challenge fi nal. A sport trivia fact is that Kevin de Klerk played his fi rst club rugby for Union, later Diggers, and was a Springbok at Alberton where he eventually played three tests, the record for an Alberton player in the Springbok jersey.
The week after the derby, A-Square Forklifts Alberton faced Wits University at Milner Park, but went down by 13-63, where Wits scored eight tries against Alberton’s one by prop Wikus Coetzer. Out-side centre Ryno Brits converted
the try and added a penalty. Fly-half Kenneth du Plessis succeeded with a drop goal. Both the Alberton u.21, with a victory of 29-24, and u.19, with a runaway score of 34-5, were on the winning side. The seconds, however, were beaten 0-52 by Wits.
Revised remaining fi xtures for June are: June 21 Alberton vs Diggers away, and Union vs Rood-epoort at Union. June 28: Alberton vs Randfontein at home (to replace the UJ fi xture which was played on June 7) and Union vs Rustenburg Impalas away.

THE offi cial launch for the Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge in association with Jacaranda FM was held at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria on Wednesday June 4.
The launch heralds the offi cial opening of entries for the race. Among other announcements, the offi cial race date was made public, this year’s theme revealed and the 2014 Brand Ambassadors were unveiled.
The sight of some 25 000 runners taking part in the Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge each year is often referred to as “a sea of colour”. This year, that might literally be the case as bright blue T-shirts worn by SPAR staff at the Atterbury Theatre unveiled the 2014 colour. Key part-ners, sponsors, organising committee members, SPAR staff, celebrities, top runners and the media all joined in to offi cially kick off this year’s race.Entries are now open
Entries are now offi cially open for the Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge, the biggest and most popular race in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix series, which attracts a whopping 25 000 avid run-ners each year.
“We are so excited at this time of year,” said Jerome Jacobs, Marketing Director at SPAR North Rand. “Once entries open we know that it is crunch time, but at the same time we start to look forward to seeing all the ladies turn out on race day.”
Entry costs R70 per person and
entry forms are available at SPAR stores across Pretoria or online. Visit www.spar.co.za for more information. All participants will receive a T-shirt, a race number and a copy of My Race magazine when they enter. My Shoes, Your Shoes
The 2014 theme is My Shoes, Your Shoes. This conce pt invites all the race participants to think about what it means to walk in another woman’s shoes.
“The phenomenon of 25 000 ladies running side by side, on a singular path, striving for the same goal, naturally led us to this theme for the 2014 race,” said Jacobs. “Last year we wanted every runner to think about what makes life beautiful, for the theme to become a celebration of
everything that is good in life, and for each participant to understand that every woman would have a different aspect of life that is beautiful for her. This year we want to build on that understanding and to take it further by asking participants to think about the woman running next to them – who she is and what her struggles might be.”
The theme is being backed by a social media campaign asking all women running in honour of someone who cannot – those literally running in another woman’s shoes – to share their stories on the SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria Facebook page.
Race day details: The race will start at 14:00 on Saturday August 30 and takes place at Super Sport Park in Centurion. As always, the race will
offer women the opportunity to take part in a 5km or a 10 km race, with the 10km challenge forming part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix Series, which has cash prizes at stake for the more advanced athletes.
As always several local artists will entertain the crowds with live performances on race day, and will set the stage for the handover of SPAR’s donations to the race benefi ciaries.
On the day, all entrants will receive a goodie bag fi lled with wonderful products, and all runners to cross the fi nish will receive a medal compli-ments of SPAR and the race sponsors. Families, groups and friends are en-couraged to come and enjoy the day together – bring a picnic basket and make the most of this great event!
