Brits TRT (Tactical Response Team) and CI (Crime Intelligence Unit) have arrested a 40-year-old Nigerian for possession of dagga and crack cocaine in Brits last week. “Following a tip-off, the police raided the house in Church Street in Brits and found dagga and crack cocaine hidden under a flower pot,” said Brits police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane.‘The police confiscated the drugs and detained the suspect in the Brits Police station holding cells. The recovered dagga is esti-mated at a street value of R800 while the crack cocaine is valued at R1 300.“The police have opened case of possession of drugs and the sus-pect appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court this week.“Brits Cluster Commander Brigadier Johan Marx also took part in this arrest by visiting the scene and said that he was impressed by the performance of the Brits cluster police members.”

A 27-year-old mother of three was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for child neglect by the Brits Magis-trate’s Court last week.Mapula Mabiletsa was found guilty of child neglect on 22 September 2015 after she was arrested in 2014 following a case of child neglect opened by a neighbour at Letlhabile Police Station.“According to the neighbour, Mabiletsa left her home on 19 July 2014, leaving her three children, aged two, four and ten with neighbours, telling them she would be back the same day. She only returned home three days later,” said Brits police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane. “According to the complainant (neighbour) it was not the first time that the mother disappeared for a period of time. Sometimes she disappeared for a week without bothering to enquire about the children’s well being.”“The Brits Cluster Commander Brigadier Johan Marx said that this will serve as a warning to all parents and guardians who do not take care of their children. Parents whose children go missing, can also be charged with child neglect if it is found that the child went missing as a result of the guardian or parent’s negligence.”

Schoemansville shopowner hi-jacked and robbedThe owner of a shop in Schoemansville was hijacked on Saartjiesnek on Friday morning, robbed, and driven to At-teridgeville where the robbers dropped him off.“The man came back from Pretoria around 09:00 after hav-ing bought stock for the shop. On Saartjiesnek a Volkswagen Polo with a siren, which he presumed was the police, pulled him over. Three men armed with a gun, forced him into the Polo. One of the robbers took his vehicle,” said Hartbees-poort community policing forum spokesperson, Romano van der Spuy.“The robbers drove around with him in Lotus Gardens in Pretoria and then dropped him off in Atteridgeville. They fled with his vehicle, stock, cash and cellphone. His vehicle was later recovered in Atteridgeville,” Van der Spuy said.No arrests have been made.

Electricity connections on the cards for settlementsIt seems as if the Rietfontein settle-ments will soon have their own elec-tricity supply, which will hopefully put an end to the illegal connections and restore landowners’ electricity woes.During a visit to Refentse (Afsaal) this week, electrical contractors were busy installing prepaid meters in houses and installing connection points.The contractors indicated that their work would possibly be completed in Refentse this week and that the electric-ity supply will be switched on very soon.Kormorant has been requesting answers regarding the illegal connections and the municipality’s lack of action from the City of Tshwane for the past two months, but to no avail.The City of Tshwane initially removed the illegal connections earlier this year, but it was reconnected immediately.In June, another operation was planned but was cancelled because of protests. A follow-up operation was also can-celled a month later after the provincial police allegedly withdrew assistance, advising the City of Tshwane and the Madibeng municipality to address the issue.Earlier this month the Democratic Alliance (DA) formally requested a response from the Gauteng Depart-ment of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) regarding the lack of action.According to the reply by the MEC of COGTA, Jacob Mamabolo, meetings

were held between the City of Tshwane and the Madibeng municipality whereby Madibeng was advised of the processes to be followed for the appli-cation for electricity connections.“A quotation was issued on 27 July 2015 for a connection point for Refentse Village but the City of Tshwane is still waiting for the acceptance and pay-ment of the connection fee,” he said.“Tshwane undertook a number of re-moval of illegal operations in Sunway, Refentse and Ten Rooms, however, all of the operations were unsuccessful due to various factors, such as inability to cross provincial borders and with-drawal by the SAPS,’ he said.He also said currently there is no need for an additional substation since all connections can be accommodated through alternative methods. Depend-ing on future growth in the area, the need for a substation may have to be reconsidered. The City of Tshwane has no budget for the provision of finan-cial assistance or a substation for the Madibeng municipality. However, the solution under consideration is that Tshwane will hand over bulk supply of electricity to Madibeng..The Madibeng municipality confirmed that the application was made to the City of Tshwane for electricity bulk supply,. “The municipality was issued with the quotation which is currently being processed. That is, a tacit agree-ment exist between the two municipali-ties,” said spokesperson Sipho Nkosi.

He is from Lim-popo and a family member of the same person in the leadership. We have plenty of skilled people in the area, why give the contract to people from outside our area?,” he said.The Madibeng municipality denied the allegations and said the situation has been exaggerated.“It is also incorrect that the contractor was paid R2 million. According to the municipal records, the contractor has not

Tot kort voor halfvyf bel sy die lyne vuurwarm om naarstigtelik te soek na ‘n slagter wat haar nauurs uit die verknorsing kan help. Na vele vrugtelose oproepe is daar uiteindelik ‘n vriende-like stem by ‘n slaghuis. “Nee, nee, uit, uit!” bulder die eens vriendelike slagter ‘n halfuur later hoogs ontsteld in sy kraakskoon slaghuis toe hy die offer sien. “Die gesondheidsafdeling sal my toemaak - ek het nie ‘n permit vir velle en horings nie!”En so beland sy en die bok toe terug by die huis - alleen. Haar kérel maak hom uit die voete met die verskoning van dringende werk en was sy hande, soos Pilatus, in on-skuld. Sy boodskap is duidelik - hierdie bok, my ding, moet jy maar self by die horings pak.Die bokkie-oë maak haar sagte hart week en skuldgevoel vreet aan haar. Sy besluit die bok moet maar vrieskas toe en stoei dit op die onderste vriesrak in om van die droewige oë te ontsnap. Teenwoordigheid van gees laat haar egter weldra besef dat ‘n vrieskas nie die beste plek vir ‘n vars bokkarkas is nie. Gelukkig onthou sy haar boetie, toe ‘n mediese student in die stad, wat darem weet van biltong en slag. Na talle oproepe spoor sy boetie op en verduidelik haar penarie.“Is die bok uitgebloei?,” is sy eerste vraag. Uitgebloei? Brits Hospital concerned about shocking botched abortions numbersThe Brits Hospital has expressed its concern about the shocking numbers of botched abortion patients being treated in the hospital almost daily.The hospital has treated over three hundred patients who had unsafe abor-tions which resulted in life-threatening complications. In August alone, 86 women were admitted to the hospital with serious complications.The deputy director: Nursing, Dineo Moromane said this week that the hospital cannot allow the shocking issue to go un-noticed as it requires urgent community involvement and education.“Notwithstanding the fact that public and private hospitals and local community health centres (CHCs) across Madibeng Local Municipality are providing legal and safe abortions, Brits Hospital has for the past four months recorded a disturb-ing increase of cases resulting from unsafe abortions with serious complications.”According to the head of Brits Hospi-tal’s Casualty Department, Sister Dina De Haas, “the patients arrive in casualty bleeding profusely. The ‘doctors’ give them unknown pills and tell them that once they start bleeding they should hurry to the hospital to get help,” she said.She said illegal and unsafe methods by untrained providers and sometimes bogus

doctors, result in severe trauma for af-fected patients. Most of the women treated for post-incomplete abortion complica-tions were young women between the ages of 20 and 29. “What is important to note is that women who opt for such terminations are risking their health, their fertility and sometimes their lives,” De Haas said.“Illegal abortion may result into short- or long-term consequences, including anaemia, prolonged weakness, chronic inflammation of the reproductive tract and secondary infertility.”Government health facilities like Brits Hospital perform safe and legal termina-tion of pregnancy by trained healthcare workers and also provide pre- and post-counselling services for the patients.Brits Hospital’s chief executive officer, Babe Mosuwe requested the commu-nity to report the illegal abortionists as they are a danger to society and putting women’s lives at risk.“The CTOP (Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 92 of 1996 in South Africa) service was put in place to reduce the number of women dying due to illegal abortions,” she said.Unfortunately women are still not em-powered with information about these services.”

A cyclist died on Monday evening when he was hit by a car on the corner of Beethoven Road and the R511.“According to eyewitness accounts the cyclist hit a curb around 18:30 and fell down. Subsequently, a vehicle drove over his head,” said Romano van der Spuy, spokesperson for the Hartbeespoort Community Policing Forum.A case of culpable homicide was opened.

The Hartbeespoortdam Community Policing Forum (CPF) advises the community that the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul will be hosting the All African Assembly at the Good Shepherd Retreat in Meerhof from 6 to 11 October. It is expected that between 60 and 70 delegates from Africa, many of whom are not fluent in English, will be in our town for the conference. Residents and neighbourhood watches are asked to treat them with the necessary courtesy.

Hy en sy vrou, Susan, woon al die afgelope byna 30 jaar in De Kroon en het jare gelede hul plaas oopgestel vir behoewende mense waarvoor hy tot met sy dood nog gesorg het. Hy was betrokke by sy omgewing en het gereeld nuusbrokkies aan Kormorant verskaf.Sy groot stem sal gemis word.Hy laat sy vrou, Susan, kinders, Jan en Fransie, en drie kleinkinders na.‘n Roudiens vind Saterdag om 11:00 in die Gereformeerde Kerk Brits plaas.

The birders’ columnThick-billed Weaver/Dikbekwewer (Amblyospiza albifrons)

The heavy bill of this weaver is likely to evoke painful memories for those who have handled them without taking sufficient care – it’s like dealing with a malevolent pair of pliers. The males are a very dark chocolate colour, almost black, with a massive bill and large head. The bill is blackish and the horn-coloured, dark grey, heavy and deep. It has a white forehead and white patches on the wings. The white forehead patches only appear during the breading season. Females are much lighter brown on top, and pale below; flecked with brown, but still showing the diagnostic heavy horn-coloured bill. In both birds the iris is brown with the legs and feet grey to blackish. The Thick-billed Weaver is a common local resident that has expanded its range in several regions over the past 50 years. They are rapidly becoming urban birds in both Gauteng and Mpumalanga. They show a marked shift in habitat between wetlands during the breeding season, and wooded and treed areas when not breeding, often occurring far from water. They are distributed in South Africa, from about the Gamtoos River, eastwards to the

lowveld and isolated populations around the Witwatersrand. Their thick heavy bills can cope with sunflower seeds and other hard seeds such as those from conifers, although they also feed on fruit, insects and other animal food such as small frogs. It drops husks and shells of fruit to the ground after opening them with its strong bill, holds the husk in foot against perch while extracting seeds. They diet mainly on insects, seeds (including Sesbania, Melia and Lantana camara), fruit, including Celtis africana (White stinkwood) and Chaetacme aristata (Thorny-elm), and small molluscs. They roost in reed beds in large flocks, often in company with Bishops and Wax-bills. Thick-billed Weavers are polygamous and are usually in small colonies, moving into reed beds during the breeding season. They breed from September to March, peaking in November to January. The nest is a finely and tightly, neatly-woven oval structure around two or more upright stems or reeds, and narrow strips of mate-rial, 1 to 2 m above water level. It is built by the male only with the female lining the inside. When the female approaches, the male perches on or near the nest and rotates its wings forwards, displaying white wing patches. Its tail jerks up and down, and it sings while displaying and it may chase the female in flight. Their call is various clicking notes and trills. When the nest is accepted and lined, the male narrows the entrance. Two to four white to pink, spotted with red, purple and brown eggs are laid. Incubation is 16 days by the female only. Nestling is about 20 days, and is fed by the female only on regurgitated seeds and insects. Nests at the end of the breeding season are left to decay, or may be used by breeding Orange-breasted Waxbills or climbing mice. These heavily billed weavers are increas-ingly observed in the Hartbeespoort area during the last few years, both around water-logged areas and away from water.

Conservation organisation WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) South Africa and international NGO ICLEI (International Council for Local Envi-ronmental Initiatives) have called on the Madibeng municipality to enter the 2015-16 Earth Hour City Chal-lenge. The Earth Hour City Challenge is a year-long competition among cities and towns around the world to pro-mote renewable energy and prepare for climate change. Cities and towns that participate by competing for the title of South Afri-can national Earth Hour Capital - as well as the Global Earth Hour Capital – are recognised for their efforts in spreading the global movement to cre-ate more sustainable, resilient cities. Now in its third year, WWF South Africa and ICLEI Africa are pleased that the 2015-2016 competition will include a national round catering to the potential that secondary munici-palities present in the journey towards a low-carbon future.“Municipalities, such as Madibeng enter by creating a profile on the carbon Climate Registry to capture the municipality’s climate actions. This undertaking could also serve as a data repository exercise for all the municipalities’ sustainable initiatives,” explains Steven Bland, project man-ager, ICLEI-Africa.

“The entries will be evaluated by an international consultancy outside of the formal global competition, but will also provide feedback to municipali-ties in moving forward. A panel of national partners will use this evaluation to determine the national South African winner. Tydens die veldtog word meer as 100 aksies aangepak wat onder meer fokus op die herstel van slaggate, die skoonmaak van vullisterreine, begraafplase en strate, die herstel van straatligte asook die be-handeling en skoonmaak van besoedelde riviere. Annelien Crock, voorsitter van die tak, het gesê Mooinooi ervaar verval op alle diensleweringsgebiede omdat die Madibeng Plaaslike Munisipaliteit (MPM) versuim om dienste aan die dorp te lewer. “Ons sal nou self verantwoordelikheid vir ons dorp neem. Die Mooinooi-tak wil deur verskeie selfdoen-aksies die dorp weer mooi en netjies maak, en ook druk op die regering toepas om hul pligte na te kom.”Volgens Crock beloop die koste van die

Met dié bedrywighede is R15 000 ingesamel. Die skool wend die fondse aan vir ‘n verdienstelike saak en het die jaar woordeboeke aan Laerskool Broederstroom geskenk. Die seuns o/10- sagtebalspan van Laerskool Generaal Hendrik Schoeman het die Gauteng-Noord-liga vir hul ouderdomsgroep by die Tshwane-kampioenskappe wat by Sonitus gespeel is, gewen. Hierdie span het in 12 wedstryde deur die seisoen 164 lopies gemaak en slegs 56 lopies afgestaan. Hul afrigter, Johan van Wyk (heel agter), is met reg trots op hierdie seuns.

Andrea de Waal, a local girl from Westlake, is the winner of the Spur High School North West Sub-junior Series. Andrea is a grade 8 pupil at the High School for Girls in Potchefstroom. She won all three her races. On Saturday, in the final race at the Hartbeespoort High School, she went on to secure the series win. Andrea has been selected to represent North West at the Spur High School National Finals which take place on 3 and 4 October at Bekker High School. Andrea is also currently the North West, sub-junior high school marathon champion.

Terwyl Hartbeespoortdam se oewers die afgelope lang naweek gevul was met hengelaars wat ‘n blinklyf kom opsoek het, was die vangste van karp baie goed. Komman-donekoewer het baie karp gelewer, met die swaarste wat 15.1 kg geweeg het. Koos Goosen kon ‘n karp van 10.3 kg land. Lourens Kleynhans was gelukkig met ‘n spieëlkarp van 12.6 kg. Theuns Nortjé kon vanaf Meerhofoewer ‘n karp land van 9.10 kg. Micheal Moll, Dawie Terblanch, Fanie Smith, Chris van Staden en Wilhelm Pistorius kon tydens ‘n hengelsessie by Schoemansville-oewerklub karp land met gewigte wat gewissel het tussen 2 en 9.48 kg. Jan Duvenage, met ‘n 10.2 kg en 6 kg karp, en Yando Badenhorst met 7 kg karp, het ook vangste by die oewer geland. Lede van Hartbeespoort Hengelklub is Vrydag tydens die klub se prysuitdeling beloon vir hul betrokkenheid by hengel en die kompetisies wat aangebied word. Dawie Terblanch het die meeste toekenings ontvang en is ook aangewys as die klub se top puntemaker vir 2015. Micheal Moll is aangewys as die beste junior hengelaar gedurende 2015. Die jaarlikse Watercare Mining Groot Karp Bonanza vind op Saterdag 7 November vanaf De Rust-oewer plaas. Die hengelaar wat die swaarste karp vir die kompetisie inweeg sal R10 000 wen.
