Cantiere delle Navi Antiche di Pna started in 1998 after the unaspected
discovery of a wìde archaeological cornplex near the S. Rossore rail-way sration, in Pba. Thc research staned as a rescúe excavation, bring-ing soon to the light a serious a,'nount ofvarious ages shiprvrecks. Theunderstanding ofthe real size ofthe archaeological contexr caused theabandonìng of the former rescue meúods, úe plaming of a detailedproject and the long rirre plarning for the ending ofthe excavations.
The site is a unique conrext úrder many aspects. ln short, it consis* ofa thick group ofsandy or clayish riverbeds, mixed up wìth complu clay

Rrlly presewed (at least 9) or lragmenrary The ground composition andthe presence ofwaters, fltered by the sandy layers, allowed a remark-
abÌe conservation for organic finds, being bigger boats or smaller objects(boad tools, ropes, baskea, leather, amphorae contains etc.).
The site can be interpreced as awide riverbed, probably the formerbed ofthe Serchio rivet in its crossing with one ofthe canals of
