About the project “Fast fashion” used to be hailed for its affordable prices and rapid

availability of all the latest designs and trends. Today, however, it is

increasingly coming under fire for its many hidden costs – environmental,

social, health and even human. Fast fashion pollutes the planet, exploits

and maintains global inequalities, damages our health and even costs us

our lives. From the consumer with an unexplained rash and the child

sorting through mounds of discarded clothing in a landfill site, to the

worker still waiting on her wages from an unsafe factory job and the

animals choking on plastics and industrial waste, a single fast fashion

T-shirt – which on average is only worn five times - can harm countless

lives1.

What is the alternative? Until relatively recently, the concept of ‘green’

or ‘fair trade’ fashion in Europe was associated with frumpy hippies in

loose outfits (often culturally appropriated knockoffs). You could be

stylish or sustainable, but not both. In some ways, ethical fashion seemed

almost intent on remaining a fringe, insular community which the

uninitiated found confusing and difficult to access.

In the last decade or so, however, there has been a rise in brands making

use of the traditional ‘Made in France/Italy’ or ‘Made in Europe’ labels

to promote their ethical, sustainable standards. Small-scale production,

higher quality, sustainably sourced materials for longer-lasting

products, fair wages and safe working environments for employees are an

integral part of their ethos, along with a commitment to transparency and

accountability to their customers. The main difference has come with the

kinds of fashion on offer: today’s ethical fashion industry has broadened

its reach, offering a wide variety of styles and sizes. Today customers

can buy their socks, office suits, swimsuits, pyjamas, sandals, jewellery

and sportswear ethically if they wish, all without standing out in a

crowd (unless they want to). This has resulted in ethical fashion becoming

accessible to a wider percentage of the population, a welcome and

essential step in changing our spending habits.

And our habits do need to change. Perhaps the most damaging impact of

fast fashion and its never-ending, ever-accelerating cycle of consumption

and disposal has been to skew our expectations of what clothing should

cost. For every person who truly cannot afford to buy sustainable fashion

(and to whom I would recommend thrift stores or online second-hand markets

such as Depop or Vinted), I see many who claim fast fashion is “too

expensive” when what they really mean is that they want to retain the

fast fashion price tags and shopping sprees without the guilt. Put it

simply, if you can afford to “treat yourself” in Zara or ASOS once a

month or so, you can afford to shop sustainably. I would even go as far

as to say that you have the responsibility to support sustainable fashion

brands so they can provide a viable alternative to fast fashion and change

the fashion sector into one where all consumers can afford to buy

sustainably.

Les Pages Vertes (“The Green Pages”, or LPV) is aimed at exactly that

demographic – those who can and want to buy sustainably, but are not

necessarily knowledgeable enough or willing to take the time to research

sustainable alternatives to fast fashion. The majority of the brands

listed here are more expensive than the typical high street offerings,

but they should not bankrupt you either – with a few more ‘luxury’

exceptions that offer products genuinely meant to last a lifetime. Truly

changing your spending habits is about planning your shopping budget to

buy a top that you will want to wear for 10 years, not 10 tops per year.

This directory is limited to Europe because, as a European, purchasing

sustainable brands from distant countries or continents creates an

unnecessary additional carbon footprint and makes it harder to know for

sure whether a brand is sustainable. What countries count as “European”

is subject to much debate, but in this case the directory uses the United

Nations ‘geoscheme’, which lists 44 countries2.

Many other problems remain – a diversification of sustainable fashion has

started many debates surrounding standards and definitions of

sustainability criteria, conversations all the more important now that

fast fashion brands are seeking to green-wash themselves with false

promises of environmental and social standards to retain their consumers.

In addition, sustainable fashion is still plagued by many of the issues

affecting the entire fashion sector: it remains largely the domain of

white, thin, young, able-bodied and generally ‘conventionally attractive’

models and business-owners. Minorities and other vulnerable groups, where

they are included, are usually seen as victims to be helped rather than

potential leaders or even customers. Sizing is also severely limited,

although brands with made-to-order or customisable services, as well as

those offering clothing that can be worn more than one way, may be more

open to providing alternatives people needing modifications in size or

cuts to suit their bodies.

LPV does not offer a definitive list of sustainable fashion brands across

Europe, or the only criteria by which a brand’s sustainability should be

judged. Instead, users are strongly encouraged to make it their starting

point in their switch from fast to sustainable fashion, and to build on

it in order to create their own personal lists – as well as feeding into

the project itself, which will hopefully grow and evolve over the years.

I am particularly interested in hearing about sustainable initiatives

that offer more diversity and inclusivity at all levels.

Using the directory

Shop How brands choose to sell their products varies; some prefer a physical

store, others a virtual one, while the most popular model appears to be

a hybrid of both. Some sell only in their own stores (physical or

virtual), while others have retailers across the world and the web. Each

decision carries a variety of environmental and labour consequences, each

of which can be used to justify the brand’s choice.

In this directory,

• Online only means products can only be bought on the internet,

either via the brand’s website, an online retailer, or by contacting

them directly (social media or messaging app).

• Available in is followed by a list of the countries or cities where

the brand’s products are available; when the brand was available

in more than 4 countries, I did not list them all but tallied the

total countries. Full breakdowns of where to buy their products are

almost always available on the brand’s website.

• Available online and in stores combines the two options above.

Gender The brands are divided based on whether they claim to be aimed at Women,

Men or All. Brands that identify themselves as “All” include both those

that state they cater to “men and women” and those who offer gender-

neutral or gender-inclusive clothing3.

Age Brands are categorised according to whether they offer clothing for Adults

(including maternity and bridal wear), Children (ranging from infants and

babies to teenagers) or All. Many of the children’s brands offer

adjustable clothing that can be let out to give the items a few extra

centimetres before the child outgrows them.

Products It would be impossible to list every type of product the listed brands

offer. This directory sorts them according to the following categories:

• Accessories describes hats, scarves, shawls, gloves, bowties, ties,

pocket handkerchiefs, hair accessories, belts, wallets and any

other item used to “complete” an outfit

• Bags includes shoulder bags, clutches, backpacks, sports bags, etc.

• Clothing is the broadest category, containing most kind of clothes.

When a brand only sells a specific variety of clothing (e.g. tops

or jackets), or if they only sell them for a specific age group or

gender (e.g. hats - children), a note has been added.

• Eyewear means glasses and sunglasses.

• Hosiery refers to socks, tights and stockings.

• Intimates is used to mean underwear (pants, bras, etc.),

underclothes (shifts, tank tops) and lingerie (teddies, etc.).

• Jewellery includes necklaces, earrings, rings (including wedding

bands), bracelets, but also cuff links or decorative pins.

• Shoes includes boots, heels, flats, sports shoes, slippers, etc.

• Sleepwear includes pyjamas, night or dressing gowns, night dresses,

etc.

• Sportswear refers to both indoors (or “yogawear”) and outdoors

sports clothes.

• Swimwear describes bikinis, swim shorts, one pieces, beachwear,

etc.

• Bridal is anything explicitly aimed at brides and weddings.

• Maternity means anything designed to be worn during pregnancy and

after birth (e.g. breastfeeding-adapted tops).

Materials Sustainable brands use a wide range of materials and fabrics, each with

a different environmental impact and chosen for a different purpose. Most

brands aim to use organic, local and/or sustainably sourced materials,

but each has different standards, aims and resources available.

In this directory, materials are roughly sorted as follows:

• Natural materials include any fabric that has been made using

materials found in nature. This includes cotton, wool, linen, hemp,

leather, etc. but also viscose (made from wood pulp), Lenzing,

Tencel, Lyocell, etc.

• Recycled materials and fabrics describe anything made from a

material or fabric that has already been used. It usually refers

to plastics (e.g. Econyl), but also to recycled materials of natural

origin (e.g. cotton, wool).

• Upcycled materials and fabrics refer to materials and fabrics that

would usually be considered ‘waste’ but have been adapted into new

products. This includes anything from leather scraps and fabric

cuttings to decommissioned sails, tires and tarpaulins.

• Deadstock is the term used to describe fabrics (and products) that

have not been sold or used, and would conventionally be discarded

as ‘waste’.

Materials that are organic or vegan have been noted as such. Many brands

listed likely offer vegan-friendly products and/or processes, but unless

this is specifically mentioned, they have not been labelled as such.

Production In a globalised world, international production chains are the norm rather

than the exception - and sustainable fashion is no exception to this.

Although many brands aim to produce within their country using locally

sourced fabrics, others choose not to for a variety of reasons. As a

result, the directory selected brands where a significant portion of the

production took place in Europe (roughly 50%).

A majority of brands in this directory produce their goods in EU

countries, meaning they are subject to EU labour regulations4. This is

not a guarantee of fair labour as such, since labour exploitation has

been eradicated nowhere in the world. However, the framework to prevent,

punish and remedy the violations of workers’ rights is among the strongest

in the world, at both the EU and national level. Brands not producing in

the EU or who consider EU standards insufficient often promise an

additional guarantee of fair labour.

Brands can prove their commitment to fair production through

certifications (see below). Another is by providing transparent supply

chain information. This allows customers to track where and how products

are made, and to verify for themselves that working conditions were fair

and environmentally conscious. Transparent pricing breakdowns fulfil a

similar function, while also reminding consumers of the work that goes

into producing their clothes.

In addition, sustainable fashion brands often aim to have a positive

social impact by hiring vulnerable groups to produce their goods (persons

with disabilities, refugees, Roma, survivors of domestic violence, people

at risks of social exclusion, etc.).

Many of the brands’ production sites aim to reduce their environmental

impact by following zero waste principles (i.e. minimising or reusing the

waste generated during production) as well as using green energy, carbon-

neutral websites, etc.

Almost all brands also advertise recyclable packaging, but this being the

lowest standard for sustainability, it has not been noted.

Certifications To ensure their materials and production live up to sustainable and fair

labour standards, brands often acquire certifications which customers can

then use to check the brand’s authenticity. However, other brands choose

to remain uncertified for a variety of reasons: lack of awareness of the

certifications’ existence, the additional cost of certification,

disagreement with the certifications’ standards, etc. Although helpful

in setting and harmonising standards, certifications are not the be-all

and end-all of sustainability.
