BREEZE-UP

DUBAI, UAEBBA sale hosted at Meydan just a few days in

advance of the Dubai World Cup meeting always promised to

have an international feel to it, and though many of the

2-year-olds purchased at the inaugural Goffs Dubai Breeze-up

Sale will remain in the Middle East, others will head to Japan

and back to Europe as they head into training.

AA first for Dubai and a first for Goffs,@ said Goffs Group Chief

Executive Henry Beeby, as the initial batch of horses was

ushered into the parade ring before a large crowd gathered

around the paddock restaurant.

With Sheikh Mohammed arriving just before the off, as the

next few hours unfolded, 69 horses were offered for sale in the

median was AED400,000/i104,128.

CLASSIC-WINNING JOCKEY JIMMY LINDLEY

PASSES AT 86 Former jockey Jimmy Lindley has died. He was 86. One of the

Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale Cont. from p1

He is now likely to remain in Dubai after Mohammed Al

Subousi went to AED2,500,000 (i619,808) to secure the son of

the dual winner Saucy Dame

(Distorted Humor). The Dubaian

owner will be represented on

Saturday in the G1 Dubai Golden

Shaheen by the well-bred

Eastern World (Ire), a Dubawi

(Ire) half-brother to dual G1

Dubai World Cup winner

Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet

{Aus}).

AThat was beyond my

expectations,@ said Whitehead.

AWe=ve had a very good sale. He

was just a bit babyish when we

bought him but he matured into

a lovely horse.@

He added of the breeze, in

which the horses were asked to stretch out at a steadier pace

than is the norm at breeze-up sales, AThis is much easier for us

because you can get the horses here in one piece and hopefully

they will train on. I think it=s a very good idea. If you=re buying a

classy horse like that you don=t want them doing 10-second

furlongs.@

Whitehead=s shopping trip to Keeneland last September

proved to be a fruitful one as he

also sold lot 59, bought for

$110,000 as a yearling, to Prince

Faisal Khalid Bin Abdulaziz for

AED2,000,000 (i495,846). The

son of Mo Town is out of Tizza

Trick (Tiznow), a half-sister to

GIII Bashford S winner Exfactor

(Exchange Rate).

The second-most expensive

colt of the sale will be heading to

Japan for his racing career after

Hirokazu Okada of Big Red Farm

gave AED2,100,000 ($520,638)

for lot 30. The only son of

Frankel (GB) in the catalogue, he

is a half-brother to the Group 3

winner Lily=s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and listed victrix

Zurigha (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

Dubai Racing Club/Goffs

Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale Cont.

AHe has to go to Europe for 60 days before he can go to

Japan,@ Okada explained. AWe like Frankel and he was a very

masculine colt and a good walker.@

Bred by Nick and Alice Nugent, the son of the unraced

Noyelles (Ire) (Docksider) from the family of the George

Strawbridge-bred Group 1 winners We Are (Ire), Call The Wind

(GB) and With You (GB), was sold for i360,000 as a foal at Goffs

to Oneliner Stables. Unsold when offered at the yearling sales,

he was then prepared as a breezer by Church Farm & Horse Park

Stud.

John Cullinan, one half of the consigning duo with Roger

Marley, said, AWe=ve had a marvellous night. We=ve sold a

Tapiture and a Mastery well, so we=ve been very lucky, and then

to have this horse.@

He continued, ASome friends of ours bought him as a foal so

there was a lot of pressure, but he=s a marvellous horse. They

weren=t expecting a rocket type--these are next year=s horses,

and we=ve trained him accordingly. He did very little galloping,

Roger Marley looked after all of that, but this horse was just

naturally talented and he has improved physically.

AI=m all for anything that will bring new money into the sport,

and fair play to Goffs and the Dubai Racing Club to establish this.

It=s another dimension to the whole season and they have been

fantastic hosts. They have looked after us so well. There=s a

great crowd here.@

Another of the Juddmonte stallions, Kingman (GB), found his

name on the leaderboard as the sire of lot 40, a half-brother to

G3 Geoffrey Freer S winner Agent Murphy (GB) (Cape Cross

{Ire}), knocked down to Ross Doyle for AED2,000,000

(i495,846). Cont. p4

AHe=s for an existing client,@ said Doyle of the Aguiar

Bloodstock consignee. AHe=s a lovely colt with a very nice

pedigree and he breezed particularly well. He may stay here but

there=s a chance he=ll go back to Europe--a good chance, I=d say.@

The colt was bought by Robson Aguiar and Amo Racing for

110,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1.

Scottish-born owner Dr. Jim Hay, a full-time resident of Dubai,

made a little piece of bloodstock history as the successful bidder

on the first lot through the ring. The colt by Gun Runner out of

the dual Grade II winner Bank Audit (Wild Rush), already the

dam of seven winners, sold for AED1,400,000 (i347,092).

After his agent Alex Cole had signed for the colt, Dr. Hay said,

AI think the sale is a brilliant concept and I know it=s something

that Goffs have been hoping to do for a while. The horse has a

lovely pedigree. We=re looking for horses who will go on the dirt

in Dubai. We bought three in Ocala last week to go to Bhupat

Seemar and he will train this horse as well.@

Lot 1 was offered by Mickey Cleere of MC Thoroughbreds,

who understandably expressed relief at a positive start to his

breeze-up season. After the colt was unsold at $70,000 at

Fasig-Tipton last October, he was bought privately for $50,000.

AI was a bit worried about being the first lot in but that=s a lot

of money,@ said Cleere. AWe certainly bought him with this sale

in mind and we were after one of those fashionable pedigrees.@

The colt is from the second crop of Breeders= Cup Classic

winner Gun Runner, who was also runner-up to Arrogate in the

Dubai World Cup of 2017.

Towards the end of the evening Cole and Hay later returned to

the MC Thoroughbreds draft to buy a filly by Into Mischief out of

the Grade III winner Ageless (Successful Appeal) (lot 67) for

AED1,600,000 (i396,677).

The progeny of Dubawi (Ire) have posted some pretty

impressive results at Meydan over the years and his sole

juvenile in the sale, a filly out of the listed winner Joyful Hope

(GB) (Shamardal), was bought by Yousuf Salem Saeed Saqer Al

Kaabi for AED1,400,000 (i347,092).

Malcolm Bastard, who consigned lot 24 for her breeders Lord

and Lady Lloyd Webber of Watership Down Stud, said, AWe are

pleased with the price, which is only the price of the nomination

and keep, and we hope she=s very lucky for the people who race

her.

AI was a bit nervous coming in but it has worked out well. We

were told to breeze at a three-quarter pace and that=s what we

did.@

Reflecting on the inaugural Dubai Breeze Up Sale, Goffs Group

Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, AThe first Dubai Breeze-Up

Sale has laid the most solid foundations for future evolution

following a vibrant evening in the winner=s enclosure at the

iconic Meydan racecourse.

AGoffs would like to thank the Dubai Racing Club for the trust

and confidence placed in our service and we salute the vision of

HH Sheikh Mohammed in adding the sale to this amazing

weekend of racing. The Dubai World Cup is the focal point of the

racing and bloodstock world this weekend and the global appeal

of Dubai was clearly reflected in the international nature of the

list of buyers who literally travelled from every corner of the

world.

AWe have learned a huge amount in our first year and look

forward to growing the sale in future years with the Dubai

Racing Club. It was some evening, some privilege, and some

atmosphere.@

Jimmy Lindley Obituary Cont. from p1

McGrath added, AHe rode some of the very good horses of his

era. He won a King George, he won three Classics and he rode

for Jeremy Tree.

AHe famously partnered Aggressor for Towser Gosden to win

the King George (in 1960) and Towser trained Charlottown (GB)

(Charlottesville {GB}) [1966 Derby winner], who Jimmy rode

early in his career.@

Lindley=s trio of UK Classic victories were with Only For Life

(GB) (Chanteur II {Fr}) and Kashmir II (Ire) (Tudor Melody {GB})

in the 1963 and 1966 2000 Guineas, respectively. Indiana (GB)

(Sayajirao {GB}) secured the St Leger with Lindley aboard in

1964. Other Classic triumphs for Lindley include a victory in the

Irish Oaks in 1961 with Ambergris (Fr) (Sicambre {Fr}), and the

Italian equivalent with Dolina (GB) (Saint Crespin III {GB}) in

1967. In addition, he rode Flat legend Brigadier Gerard (GB)

(Queen=s Hussar {GB}) on the gallops for trainer Dick Hern in the

early '70s. When he retired, Lindley had accrued 882 Flat

winners in Britain and 25 in the National Hunt sphere.

Added McGrath, AHe had a very long history in racing, he had

weight worries which forced him over hurdles and he actually

finished third in the 1958 Champion Hurdle.

AHe was associated with some major stables--Jeremy Tree and

Guy Harwood--he was also the man who went to Kentucky to

recruit Steve Cauthen for Robert Sangster. When Steve came

over he was his mentor.@ Cont. p7

Jimmy Lindley Obituary Cont.

AHe rode against Joe Mercer, Lester Piggott, Edward Hide and

Scobie Breasley. He may have been old school but because of

that he was always professional.

AWhile he may be remembered by younger followers for his

work on TV, for which he had a unique style. His English

grammar did not always match his high standards of

observations around the paddock, but nevertheless he was well

liked.@

Lindley is survived by his wife, Pat, and sons Bruce and Mark.

TWO MORE HELD IN FRENCH DOPING CASE Two more people have been detained in the French doping

case which began Tuesday morning with coordinated stable

raids throughout the country, according to the Jour de Galop. In

Thursday's edition, the JDG reports that one of the two new

individuals was connected to steeplechase trainer Luc Gabeur,

and the other in the Ile de France region which encompasses

Paris. Two other individuals have been released.

Tuesday morning, raids were carried out throughout the

country, with 21 arrested in France, one additional person in

Italy and one in Spain. In Thursday's JDG, Piallat confirmed that

two veterinarians, Diego Uson of Spain, and Bertrand Franquet

were among those detained. The paper said that according to

their sources, raids were carried out Tuesday morning at the

stables of David Cottin in Lamorlaye, just outside Chantilly, and

in La Teste in Luc Gabeur's stables, which were very similar in

nature. Workers were asked to wait in the break room, their

mobile phones confiscated, while the searches were carried out,

the JDG said.

Wednesday morning, the horses returned to training as usual.

"We are trying to establish the roles of one to another, their

relationships and their level of responsibility," Stephane Piallate,

the head of the central service of racing and gaming, told the

JDG. "Some people have been revealed to probably have a more

important role than we thought at the start, serving as some

sort of regional relays distributing these doping products. We

are at the heart of an important process of identifying and

verifying the elements of proof. Working in connection with the

expertise of horse racing laboratories, we are waiting for the

results of the analyses."

TATTERSALLS MARCH ONLINE SALE TOPPED

BY NO NAY NEVER GELDING Hamlet (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 14), a 2-year-old gelding,

(Galileo {Ire}) was purchased by Mount Racing=s John Quinn.

Quinn commented, AHe has a lovely pedigree and is a nice,

scopey individual. I was able to visit where he=s been prepped

and was very pleased when I saw him move. The Tattersalls

St Mark=s Basilica will stand for $44,000 inc. GST | Coolmore Australia

ST MARK'S BASILICA WILL SHUTTLE TO

COOLMORE AUSTRALIA

by Bren O'Brien

St Mark's Basilica (Fr), the five-time Group 1-winning son of

Siyouni (Fr), will join the star-studded roster at Coolmore

Australia in 2022, at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Coolmore Australia has confirmed the son of the Aga Khan's

Champion stallion Siyouni will travel to Australia to join the

powerhouse roster at Jerrys Plains for the upcoming season.

"We are delighted to offer a horse with such rare qualities as

St Mark=s Basilica to Australasian breeders. As a sire prospect, he

has everything you could ever hope for and in terms of quality

he has attracted an unparalleled first book of mares in Europe,@

commented Coolmore Australia Principal, Tom Magnier.

ASt Mark=s Basilica was simply brilliant on the track, who just

like leading stallions Shamardal and Lope De Vega won the

French 2000 Guineas and Prix du Jockey Club double.

AHis sire Siyouni is the most expensive stallion to ever stand in

France and has been remarkably successful with limited

opportunities in Australia. He comes from an impeccable family,

being out of a Group-winning 2-year-old by Galileo and

half-brother to a Classic winner.

ATo top it all off he=s an absolutely stunning individual, so we

look forward to showing him to local breeders later in the year.@

St Mark's Basilica carries a strong connection to Australia

through his well-known breeder Bob Scarborough, while the

stallion's half-brother, Magna Grecia (Ire), the dual Group

1-winning son of Invincible Spirit (Ire), has shuttled to Coolmore

Australia for the past two seasons.

Their dam, Cabaret (Galileo {Ire}), has proven a gold mine for

former Moonee Valley Racing Club Chairman Scarborough, who

purchased her through BBA Ireland=s Adrian Nicoll at the

Tattersalls December Mares= Sale in 2011 for 600,000 gns

(AU$1.12 million).

AWAY GAME'S MAGIC RETURNby Bren O'Brien

The extraordinary career of Away Game (Snitzel), the R. Listed

Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, champion filly and multiple

Group 1 placegetter, is set to come full circle with the 4-year-old

to be offered at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in

May in the same ring she was purchased as a yearling.

Away Game, a $425,000 purchase for Kerri Radcliffe

Bloodstock from the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale where she was offered by her breeders at Mill Park Stud,

has taken Hannah Jennings and her fellow owners on an

amazing ride, winning over $3.6 million in prizemoney.

Her highlight victory for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

stable was undoubtedly the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, but

she also won four other stakes races and was runner-up in the

G1 Golden Slipper S., confirming her status as the Champion

2-year-old filly of that season.

She would train on to be a Group 3 winner at three while at

four, she was recently runner-up in the G1 Oakleigh Plate

behind unbeaten mare Marabi (I Am Invincible).

With her racing journey coming to an end, the daughter of

four-time Australian Champion Sire, Snitzel, will go through the

Gold Coast sale ring once more, this time in May where she will

be one of the most-anticipated lots in the National Broodmare

Sale.

"That was always the plan with her. She's a valuable filly and it

made sense to go through Magic Millions, given that is where

she came from and obviously winning the 2-year-old race. It

seemed right to go back there again," Jennings told TDN AusNZ.

"She's been a super special horse for me and my family. It will

definitely be bittersweet to sell her. When you buy a horse just

expecting them to be an early 2-year-old and they then go on

and train on and perform so well at three and four, there is not

much more you can ask for."

With the exception of host Sheikh Mohammed, who has won

the G1 Dubai World Cup no fewer than nine times, and the late

more than one victory in the event, now worth $12 million. That

could all change in the space of a little more than two minutes

out a pair of runners consisting of different partnerships.

On a rating of 124, 'TDN Rising Star' Life Is Good (Into

Elliott Walden | Keeneland photo

Dubai World Cup cont. from p1

AThe timing has been good, he didn't work for a couple of

weeks after the Pegasus. He's worked every week since and he's

worked super,@ reports WinStar President/CEO and Racing

Manager Elliott Walden. AHe seems like the same horse we had

at home. Same energy, same enthusiasm.@

Ready To Rock and Roll... That was on full display Wednesday morning at Meydan. A

well-muscled Life Is Good made his customary appearance just

after 5 a.m. and tanked around the racetrack with powerful, yet

controlled strides. Afterwards, he was met by trainer Todd

Pletcher, Walden and WinStar's David Hanley back where he

entered the track, a throng of international media looking on

intently.

AHe always takes a pretty keen hold and from the videos I've

seen in the morning, he's taken a good hold without being too

wound up. All of that is positive,@ Walden said. AIf he wasn't

eager, we'd have to be concerned. He's stayed in the feed tub

good, Todd is really happy with him, says he is ready to go.@

The colt's energy level aside, Walden and the WinStar

braintrust have been pleased with the way Life Is Good gets over

the Meydan dirt surface and has little concern where it comes to

his ability to handle it come Saturday.

AHe's a horse that has run at multiple racetracks, doesn't need

to take his track with him,@ Walden said. AHe's had success

wherever he's gone, so from that standpoint, I don't think we're

too concerned about the racetrack. The surface seems nice, you

don't hear them when they come over it and he seems to

bounce off it pretty well.@

Life Is Good also stood in the gate Wednesday morning--the

same inside stall he'll occupy Saturday--and Walden said it's

game on.

Country Grammer | Dubai Racing Club

ATodd's routine is to stand them [at the gate] once and [Life Is

Good] certainly knows that something is ready to happen,@ the

Classic-winning former conditioner said. AHe schooled in the

paddock [Wednesday night]. You have to van over from the

quarantine area and did that without turning a hair.@

While clearly the standout runner in the World Cup field that

also includes entrants from four other jurisdictions, Life Is Good

is untested over the 2000-meter distance. Walden is quietly

confident that will be a non-issue.

AI feel good about it. I wouldn't trade places with anybody,@ he

said. AUntil they do it, you always have a little bit of a concern,

but he has always trained like he'll continue to go on and I've

never thought that we've gotten to the bottom of him. That

makes us feel good about his chances at a mile and a quarter.@

A victory Saturday would give Life Is Good Grade Is at three

different distances--not to mention the near miss at a fourth--

further enhancing his value at stud when that time comes.

AWhen we decided to bring him back at four, we decided that

we were not going to duck anybody,@ said Walden. AWe had this

race in mind, we had the Pegasus in mind and we were going to

take on anybody that came. It's important to find out if he can

run a mile and a quarter. Winning the [GI] Breeders' Cup Dirt

Mile and the Pegasus last time, it seems the right time to try 10

furlongs.@

And to boot, Life Is Good is out of a mare by a sire that has

contributed mightily to WinStar becoming one of the world's

premier stallion stations.

ADistorted Humor mare, he's got sire potential top and

bottom. I think he gets some of his athleticism from the

Distorted Humor side of his pedigree,@ Walden said, pointing out

that the cross over Forty Niner-line dams has resulted in Grade I

winners--and sires--Practical Joke and Goldencents.

He's A Little Bit Country... Though less accomplished than Life Is Good, Country

Grammer (Tonalist) gives WinStar--and partners Zedan Racing

Stable and Commonwealth Thoroughbreds LLC--a live second

chance in the World Cup.

A $60,000 Keeneland September purchase in 2018, Country

Grammer was sold by Wavertree Sales to Bradley

Thoroughbreds, agent for the late Paul Pompa, Jr., for $450,000

at OBS April in 2019. For trainer Chad Brown, Country Grammer

won two of six starts, including the 2020 GIII Peter Pan S., but--

following Pompa, Jr.'s untimely passing late that year--was

purchased by WinStar for 25% of his 2-year-old sales price.

Lane's End handled the Pompa dispersal.

AWe were prepared to go to $250,000 or so for him and I was

very surprised we got him for $110,000,@ Walden said. AWe

really liked his race record. We felt that he could be a good

handicap horse and we bought him with the intention of

sending him to Bob [Baffert] in California because that division

out there seemed a little bit short on numbers and it's worked

out well.@

Bred by Scott and Debbie Pierce, Country Grammer has done

nothing wrong in three runs to date for his new connections.

Narrowly beaten in the 2021 GII Californian S. by Royal Ship

(Brz) (Midshipman), he reversed form in the GI Hollywood Gold

Cup last May before going missing. Set what seemed to be a

lofty task returning to action in the G1 Saudi Cup Feb. 26--with

Amr Zedan now part of the ownership--Country Grammer came

to win the $20-million test late, only to be run down by Emblem

Road (Quality Road).

ABob did an outstanding job of getting him there off a 270-day

layoff,@ Walden said. AHe had been training lights out in the days

leading up to the [Saudi Cup] and I don't think Bob would have

put him on the plane if he didn't think he was going to run well.

He continued, AAt the eighth pole, I thought he was going to

win it. [Emblem Road] was in the middle of the racetrack and

I'm not sure he ever saw him until it was too late and then he

tried to gallop out back in front. He really ran a tremendous

race.@

Country Grammer, for whom Saturday's trip is definitively not

a question mark, has been much handier to the pace in the

three starts since his acquisition and Walden sees him sitting a

similar sort of trip this weekend.

AHe'll be close I think. With Bob he has shown a little bit more

speed,@ he said. ALeading up to the Saudi race, he had three gate

works, really wanted him to be ready off the layoff. He doesn't

have the kind of speed that Life Is Good has, but he should be in

the first flight somewhere.

AHe looks good. He bounced out of Saudi well,@ Walden

continued. AHe was maybe a little bit tired the first week, but

he's come back well, good energy. He's had a couple of easy

breezes over here and Bob has been happy.@

Country Grammer carries the Zedan colors this weekend.

In 2009, two years after finishing 11th to Discreet Cat

(Forestry) in the G2 UAE Derby and having finished third to

Curlin (Smart Strike) one year prior, Well Armed (Tiznow) gave

WinStar its first World Cup, gliding home by some 14 lengths.

Walden would be thrilled to see the farm's name engraved on

the trophy at least once more.

AIt would mean a lot. It's great race. A race that if you're in the

horse business, this is the kind you want to compete in and try

to win. It would be a great honor to have one of these two

horses win the World Cup,@ said Walden.

AOr run 1-2, that's what we're hoping for.@

Gary Stevens cont. from p1

It was he who in 1988 piloted Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}) to

only the third win by a filly in the GI Kentucky Derby. Like Secret

Oath, Winning Colors was trained by the legendary D. Wayne

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • MARCH 24, 2022

Lukas, never afraid to try something unconventional with his

horses.

AWayne has never been afraid to jump outside the box, and I

think in today's times, with a lot of negativity going on

surrounding our industry, this is a feel-good story,@ Stevens said.

AAnd Wayne has always been about this sport. He's 100% the

best ambassador that we've ever had. People have asked me, 'Is

[Secret Oath] anything like Winning Colors?' I actually think from

what I'm seeing in the mornings, she may be better than

Winning Colors. She's got a different style, she loves to sit off

the pace and be a stalker and accelerate. She's got brilliant

acceleration for a dirt horse--almost like a turf horse. When she

drops [her head] and puts in her kick, she gets it over with in a

hurry. Now, granted, she's been running against fillies, but I

think there's a lot more in the tank than what we've seen.@

Stevens was later asked about the recent news that Southern

California's top two jockeys, Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli,

would be moving their tack to New York this spring, and

whether or not he was surprised.

ANo, I wasn't at all,@ he said. AI thought that this move would

have come a couple of years ago, to be quite honest with you.

We've all seen the success Flavien has had when he's traveled to

the East Coast. He and Umberto are climbing into what I

consider the toughest jockey colony, possibly in the world. But

you've got to think about the future, and I'm not going to

sugarcoat anything. We see the smaller field sizes in Southern

California, and that's one reason I'm in Arkansas right now with

Geovanni Franco and Tiago Pereira. They're very good riders

who were sixth, seventh on the list of people's choices, and

when [tracks] are running shorter fields and multiple trainers

have multiple entries in these short fields, it doesn't leave a lot

of crumbs for the rest.@

Elsewhere on the show, which is also sponsored by Coolmore,

West Point Thoroughbreds, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders

Association, XBTV, Canterbury Park and Legacy Bloodstock, the

writers reacted to a Franklin County judge denying Bob Baffert a

stay of his suspension, celebrated the drastically improved

breakdown record of California tracks and and Finley reads an

extraordinary reply to his story on Jorge Navarro starting his

prison sentence. Click here to watch the podcast; click here for

Cape Trafalgar | Coglianese

Cape Trafalgar as a foal | Autry Graham

SECOND CHANCES: CAPE TRAFALGAR LOOKS

TO CARRY LATE SIRE'S LEGACY by Steve Sherack

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack

catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep

on your radar.

After bringing $325,000 from John Fort's Peachtree Stable at

the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, the

expectations were always high for Cape Trafalgar (c, 3, Lord

Nelson--Goldrush Girl, by Political Force), who kicked off his

career with an encouraging second-place finish on debut at

Gulfstream Mar. 12 (video).

AHe had trained extremely well, but we had a couple of

setbacks,@ Fort said. AI honestly believe that if we didn't have

those setbacks, we might be in the Derby mix right now. He

trains like that kind of horse. And he's a big, gorgeous colt.@

With a worktab dating back to last May, albeit with a pair of

gaps, Cape Trafalgar fired a five-furlong bullet from the gate in

:59 (1/31) at trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr.'s Palm Meadows base

Mar. 5 and was off at odds of 7-1 in his six-furlong unveiling.

Immediately under a busy ride with jockey Hector Berrios also

showing him the whip, the long-striding chestnut didn't appear

to be getting over the sloppy, sealed track all that well and was

sixth through an opening quarter in :22.64. Beginning to get his

legs underneath him from there, he revved up four deep into a

joint second on the far turn and set his sights on the leader.

Bumped by eventual winner Unikee (Unified) leaving the

three-sixteenths, Cape Trafalgar couldn't quite match strides as

that one quickened impressively over the wet going, but he

continued on nicely to report home a strong second, beaten 2

1/4 lengths. He earned an 85 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

AHe ran a big race first time out, didn't he?@ Fort said. ATake

nothing away, the winner ran well. He'd run well in his first start

[third behind subsequent Hutcheson S. runner-up Nitrous

Channel] and ran back to that.@

As for what's next for Cape Trafalgar, Fort added, AWe're

gonna run him at Keeneland on [GI] Blue Grass S. day [Apr. 9].

There's a maiden race at seven-eighths.@

Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, Cape Trafalgar was the

second-most expensive of 37 yearlings sold from the first crop

of the ill-fated Lord Nelson. His dam Goldrush Girl was second in

the 2011 GII Golden Rod S. This is the extended female family of

Grade/Group 1 winners Albertus Maximus, Daredevil and King

Charlemagne.

AHe's a big, rugged horse,@ Fort said. AHe was such a standout

in the sale that year. Lord Nelson, you might have said, was a

little bit more of a sprinter type in conformation. This horse

doesn't have that appearance or feel to him. You would look at

this horse and say he might go a mile and a quarter. When you

brought Lord Nelson out of the stall, you'd probably say he looks

like seven-eighths or a miler.@

Fort would certainly know.

He purchased Lord Nelson for $340,000 as a Keeneland

September yearling. Lord Nelson most notably carried

Peachtree's purple-and-tan silks to a win in the GII San Vicente

S. and a third-place finish in the GI Malibu S. Purchased privately

by Spendthrift ahead of his 4-year-old campaign, Lord Nelson

went a perfect four-for-four, led by a trio of Grade I victories in

Southern California.

Tabbed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the 2016 GI

Breeders' Cup Sprint, Lord Nelson was scratched with an

infection in his right front foreleg, and, after missing the 2017

breeding season with a bout of laminitis, was subsequently

retired to stud at Spendthirft Farm the following year.

After a well-documented, long battle with the aforementioned

disease, Lord Nelson was euthanized at the age of nine last fall.

Cape Trafalgar | Beau Simmons

He is currently represented by one black-type winner and 14

winners.

AIt's a sad story,@ Fort said. ALord Nelson was a beautiful horse.

I sold a majority interest to Spendthrift Farm and they turned

out to be terrific partners. They went the full 100 miles in taking

care of this horse and treating him.@

In addition to Cape Trafalgar, Fort's Peachtree Stable also has a

Abeautiful@ homebred 2-year-old filly by Lord Nelson named

Lady Hamilton, her yearling full-brother, and a pair of Lord

Nelson foals of this year.

CHRB ELABORATES ON SPECIFICS OF

BAFFERT SUSPENSION by Dan Ross

Earlier this week, a Kentucky judge denied trainer Bob Baffert's

attempts to stay a 90-day suspension related to Medina Spirit's

betamethasone-positive disqualification from the 2021 GI

Kentucky Derby by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission

(KHRC).

While the appeals process plays out, the question now is:

What will happen to the nearly 100-horses in Baffert's

California-based stable if the suspension goes into effect Apr. 4.

As the TDN previously reported, the California Horse Racing

Board (CHRB) will honor the 90-day suspension metered down

to Baffert through a system of reciprocity between jurisdictions.

That honor system is laid out in CHRB rule 1484: "If any

applicant for a license or any licensee is under suspension, set

down, ruled off, excluded from the inclosure, or otherwise

barred from any racing occupation or activity requiring a license,

it is prima facie evidence that he or she is unfit to be granted a

license or unfit to hold a license or participate in racing in this

State as a licensee during the term of any suspension or

exclusion from racing imposed by any competent racing

jurisdiction."

On Tuesday afternoon, the CHRB elaborated further on the

specifics of any such suspension.

Citing CHRB rule 1843.3 which deals with disciplinary actions

stemming from medication violations, licensed trainers

suspended for 60 days or more shall be banned from all CHRB

licensed facilities.

"In addition, during the period of suspension, such trainer shall

forfeit all assigned stall space and shall remove from the

inclosures all signage, colors, advertisements, training-related

equipment, tack, office equipment, and any other property," the

rule states.

The CHRB also prohibits a trainer suspended for more than

30-days from transferring the horses to any licensed family

member, or to any other licensee employed by the suspended

licensee within the previous year.

A'Licensed family members' means any person who holds an

occupational license issued by the CHRB and who is related to

the suspended licensee, or the licensee whose license is

revoked, by blood, or by marriage or domestic partnership, or

who is related by blood to the spouse or domestic partner of

such licensee," the rule adds.

As written, the rules do not preclude a licensed trainer with no

immediate ties to Baffert from assuming the running of his

stable in whole or in part, including employees, should the

relevant owners in Baffert's barn agree to such a replacement,

explained an expert on these matters who asked to remain

anonymous. There would, however, be a set of strict

stipulations governing such a scenario, the expert explained.

Baffert would not be allowed to directly contact that trainer

for the period of the suspension, for example. And all financial

duties of the day-to-day running of the barnBsuch as payroll and

other routine stable costs--would also be the replacement

trainer's sole responsibility.

The KHRC has yet to weigh in officially on this particular

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • MARCH 24, 2022

Grindstone | Horsephotos

matter. In its original ruling, the KHRC ruling states that, "Entry

of all horses owned or trained by Mr. Baffert is denied pending

transfer to persons acceptable to the stewards."

The TDN emailed the KHRC for clarification on who the

Kentucky stewards deem acceptable but has not yet received a

response.

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER GRINDSTONE

PASSES AWAY by Bill Finley

Grindstone, the winner of the 1996 GI Kentucky Derby, passed

away at age 29. The news was reported by Oakhurst Equine of

Oregon, which acquired the stallion in 2009.

"RIP Champ," Oakhurst Equine posted on its Facebook page.

"Thank you for providing us with the thrill of a lifetime. You

changed our lives when you joined us and will always be

missed."

Grindstone was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner, a

status he enjoyed for just a few days. At age 31, 1994 Kentucky

Derby winner Go for Gin died Mar. 8. Silver Charm, the 1997

Derby winner, now holds that distinction. He resides at Old

Friends Equine in Georgetown, Ky.

A son of Unbridled who was trained by Wayne Lukas and

owned by William T. Young, Grindstone raced just twice as a

2-year-old, winning a June 1, 1995 maiden at Belmont by five

lengths. After finishing second in his 3-year-old debut in an

allowance race at Santa Anita, he won the GIII Louisiana Derby

and then finished second in the GII Arkansas Derby.

Sent off at 5-1 in the Kentucky Derby and ridden by Jerry

Bailey, he closed relentlessly in the stretch to nip Cavonnier by a

nose at the wire. The photo was so close that Lukas wasn't sure

that he had won the race.

"When we hit the wire we erupted," Lukas said. "Then it hit

me right between the eyes--hell, maybe we didn't win it."

A chip was found in Grindstone's knee after the race and he

never ran again. He became the first Derby winner since

Bubbling Over in 1926 to be retired after winning the Derby.

"The chip was described to me as being half as big as the end

of your little finger," Young said. "The injury isn't

life-threatening, but if he wasn't going to come back to his

present form, I didn't want to take the chance of racing him

anymore. I said that after we lost Grand Canyon that I wouldn't

go through that again."

Grindstone began his stud career at Young's Overbrook Farm

in Kentucky. His most notable offspring was Birdstone, the

winner of the 2003 GI Champagne S, the 2004 GI Belmont S. and

the 2004 GI Travers S. He also produced Ekolu Place, who made

$1,326,760 racing in Japan.

But Grindstone was not particularly successful at stud. When

Young died his heirs closed the farm and dispersed the stallions.

Not exactly in high demand, Grindstone was acquired by Jack

Root, who owns Oakhurst Thoroughbreds, and sent to Oregon.

His initial stud fee there was $2,500 and he became the first

Derby winner to stand in the Pacific Northwest.

"To have Grindstone, a Kentucky Derby winner, is a dream

come true," Root said in 2014. "I just never thought it would

happen to me. It's a thrill of a lifetime."

The move to Oregon gave him a new lease on life and he was

among the top three leading stallions in that state every year

from 2009 through 2020.

NJ COMMISSION 'POLITELY DECLINES' TO BE

HISA MIDDLEMAN by T.D. Thornton

The New Jersey Racing Commission voted 6-0 Wednesday not

to act as a middleman on behalf of the Horseracing Integrity and

Safety Act (HISA) by collecting fees from state licensees that will

eventually fund the yet-to-get started authority's drug-testing

and safety initiatives.

The decision was hardly a surprise, and it yielded zero public

discussion among commissioners prior to the perfunctory vote.

It had seemed unlikely that the NJRC would be the first

regulator in the nation to willingly craft a complex set of rules

and set up a payment-collecting process from scratch to fund a

work-in-progress ruling body whose July 1 start date looms in

the shadow of two federal lawsuits aiming to get HISA voided on

constitutional grounds before its programs even go into effect.

Judith Nason, the NJRC's executive director, said at the Mar.

23 meeting that the HISA Act authorizes its authoritative body to

impose fees on "covered persons" to pay for anti-doping and

safety programs, and that those fees will be calculated on a

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • MARCH 24, 2022

Albertus Maximus at Old Friends | Mary Greene

yet-to-be-determined, proportionate, state-by-state basis

depending on how much racing takes place in each state.

Also under the HISA law, Nason said individual state racing

commissions may elect to collect the HISA fees from that state's

industry participants and then remit those fees to HISA. But if a

state commission wants to opt in on that process, she added, it

has to notify HISA by May 1.

Nason noted that it would be up to each opting-in state to

come up with its own method of assessing and collecting fees

from licensees. And since New Jersey currently has no statute,

rule or contact in place that spells out that process, the

commission would have to go through the difficult work of

proposing its own systemCwhich would never happen in time

for the May 1 opt-in date, based on how long it takes to get

rules passed in New Jersey, Nason added.

Nason told commissioners prior to the roll call that the NJRC

staff recommended that the commission vote not to collect the

fees. The vote was then unanimous to follow that

recommendation.

Although the commission's vote doesn't change a thing in the

way it does business, the NJRC now at least has it on the record

that it didn't want to be the bill collector for a program that is

being opposed by several other state racing commissions and

the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association

in two similar but separate lawsuits.

No New Jersey commissioners articulated their views on what

might happen in the near term regarding HISA. But Nason did

shed some light on the process when prompted during the

public commentary portion of the meeting after the vote.

"It's really up to HISA to figure out how they want to assess the

racing industry. And the question for the NJRC was whether we

wanted to insert ourselves in that process. And we politely

declined," Nason said.

Responding to a follow-up query, Nason added that it's

unlikely New Jersey licensees will be hit up twice at some point

in the future to pay for drug-testing costs (as in having to pay

once to the NJRC, then again to HISA during the same time

frame).

"Pursuant to state statute, the NJRC can assess permit-holders

for our racing costs," Nason explained. "When HISA gets up and

running, once they take over an issue such as the anti-doping

and medication control program, they will be able to bill the

racing licensees for their costs, and the NJRC will be

pre-emptedCwe will not be able to bill. So it will be a shift from

the permit-holders paying us to however HISA wants to collect

those fees directly from the racing industry."

Fall dates swap

The NJRC also voted 6-0 to approve the change of two 2022

Thoroughbred dates from the Meadowlands to Monmouth Park.

What would have been the final two programs of the all-turf

Thoroughbred meet at the Meadowlands (Friday and Saturday,

Oct. 28 and 29) got swapped out for two additional Sundays at

Monmouth (Sept. 11 and 18), the latter of which will be the new

closing day of the meet. The request was made by Monmouth's

management.

Thoroughbred racing at those two Jersey tracks will get a

nine-date boost this season compared to 2021.

Monmouth's opening day is May 7 for the 62-date meet. The

nine-date Meadowlands grass meet begins Sept. 23.

WOODBINE TO DESIGNATE LAND FOR SOCCER

STADIUM Woodbine Entertainment is prepared to designate a portion of

its 684-acre land at Woodbine Racetrack for the development of

a new high-performance training centre and stadium for

women's and men's soccer, it was announced Wednesday.

In working with private investors and various stakeholders, the

soccer project would feature an 8,000-seat soccer specific

stadium and a 38,000 square foot training facility with a

world-class grass pitch that meets FIFA professional standards.

"With Canada on the brink of qualification for the 2022 FIFA

World Cup, the Women's National Team Olympic Gold Medal

win, and Canada co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, the time is

certainly right for us to show our support for Canada's growing

soccer community," said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine

Entertainment. "We see the power of the game in bringing

people together and we cannot think of a more complementary

sport as we look to further grow and sustain the horse racing

industry and the 25,000 jobs it supports throughout the

province."

NEW YORK CLAIMING CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

RETURNS SATURDAY The New York Claiming Championship series returns for the

seventh year on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack with 10 starter

stakes worth $620,000. The New York Claiming Championship is

open to horses which have started for a prescribed claiming

price in 2021-22. The 10-race series, each named after some of

the most popular claiming horses to run at the Big A, features

distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 3/8 miles. A total of 93

horses were entered across the 10 races. Robert Falcone, Jr. will

saddle four starters on the lucrative card. "Days like this are

important," Falcone, Jr. said. "The claiming rank and allowance

horses make up the race cards day in and day out. It's good to

have a day for them. They are all really nice horses, but not

every horse can be a million-dollar horse. It's nice for them to

get a shot to run in a starter stake. These are the types of horses

who make the cards go each day."

JOE MORRIS NAMED JOCKEYS AND JEANS

AMBASSADOR Jockeys and Jeans, a volunteer group dedicated to raising

funds for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), has

named Caesars Entertainment Inc. Vice President of Racing Joe

Morris as an official Jockeys and Jeans Ambassador. In this role,

Morris will advocate for wounded jockeys' financial support,

make known the inherent dangers of racing, and help in jockey

recovery. "It's hard putting into context what this level of

participation means to horse racing's fallen heroes," said Barry

Pearl, President of Jockeys and Jeans. "It's more than a response

to a huge human need and desire to make a difference. It's the

recognition by leaders of another major corporation that the

advocacy of former injured riders is one of the most significant

in the entire horse racing industry and of which Morris knows

firsthand as one of the most successful executives this sport has

produced."

Morris added, "The importance of the safety and well-being of

our human and equine athletes is of the utmost importance. At

Caesars, we believe everyone in our industry should be active in

financially assisting our fallen riders and we're honored to take a

leadership role with Jockeys and Jeans to support the PDJF and

our disabled riders."

investor with a keen interest in horses. Head of the Zedan Group,

his bread and butter is the energy sector in Saudi Arabia. And

THREE COMMA GLENN (c, 3, Empire Maker--Light of the Nile,

by Eskendereya) has been working lights-out, posting back-to-

back five-furlong bullets Mar. 7 and Mar. 15, working in 1:00 2/5

and 1:00 respectively in preparation for his debut here. The 4-5

favorite waited outside the early pace set by Noble Gaston

(Noble Bird). He took over from that pacesetter entering the far

turn and pulled away down the stretch without asking from

jockey Frankie Pennington to win by 9 1/2 lengths over Flaco

Explosivo (More Than Ready), who closed strongly but was no

match. Three Comma Glenn is out of a half-sister to late sire

Pioneerof the Nile. She has since produced a yearling filly by

Uncle Mo and was bred to Volatile for 2022. Sale history:
