LEADS ORBY

By Emma Berry

DONCASTER, UKCOn a day without the millionaire highlights

that we have become accustomed to at the Goffs Orby Sale,

trade struggled to keep pace with recent strong renewals of this

auctionCa factor which had been widely expected in advance

and has been seen throughout the 2020 yearling market.

Despite the industry being fuelled largely by dreams, only the

foolhardy could dream that this year=s trade would be

unaffected by a global pandemic which is not only restricting

international travel but also plunging plenty of businesses into

precarious situations. To a certain extent, the upper tier of the

yearling market remains immune to such outside forces but

there was a more workmanlike feel to the first session which

progressed at a rate significantly below recent levels.

It must be remembered that in 2019 the Orby was led by a

i3 million fillyCone of four seven-figure transactions at the

saleCbut even the presence of that Galileo filly=s

three-parts-sister by Sea The Stars (Ire) couldn=t make a

difference this year as the daughter of Green Room (Theatrical)

was bought in at ,775,000.

SERPENTINE SUPPLEMENTED TO ARC This year=s G1 Investec Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}) was supplemented to Sunday=s G1 Prix de l=Arc de

Triomphe on Wednesday at a cost of i72,000. He was the lone

supplementary entry to the i3-million race.

In his first start since running away with the blue riband at

25-1, Serpentine finished fourth in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris

over the Arc course and distance at ParisLongchamp on Sept. 13

behind stablemate and fellow Arc contender Mogul (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}). They are part of a five-horse challenge for the Coolmore

partners and Aidan O=Brien, with Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) holding

sway as the race=s 11-4 second favourite. Mogul=s year-older

full-brother Japan (Ire) and last year=s G1 Irish Derby winner

Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) complete the Ballydoyle brigade.

With Serpentine supplemented, 16 remain engaged for the

Arc. Rain has continued to fall in Paris, with as of Wednesday

morning 14.4 millimetres having fallen this week. The going is

currently very soft with more rain forecast.

Florida-Bound Invincible Spirit Colt Leads Orby cont. from p1

Having topped the Orby in the last two years when her

daughters brought a collective i6.2 million, Vimal and Gillian

Khosla=s star broodmare, who is already the dam of three Group

1 winners, has already more than played her part and the

retention of such a prized filly by her breeders is

understandable.

Of course, with the sale=s move from Ireland to England came

a change of currency from euros to pounds. Direct comparisons

are not being made by Goffs until the end of the sale on

Thursday, and the most encouraging statistic to be drawn from

the first day of trade is the 81% clearance rate.

AThe clearance rate demonstrates a pragmatism and a realism

from the vendors and once again we salute them. They=ve read

the market well,@ said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby

at the close of play on Wednesday.

The 165 yearlings sold throughout the day brought an

aggregate of ,11,504,000 (the corresponding figure during the

same session last year was just over i23-million). The average

price was ,69,721 and the median ,50,000.

Early Start For Campanelle Team American buyers have increased their investment in European

yearlings in recent years and it wasn=t long before their

influence was felt at Goffs on Wednesday morning when Ben

McElroy went to ,420,000 for a son of Invincible Spirit (Ire).

Offered by the Irish National Stud as lot 12, the second son of

the dual winner Aimhirgin Lass (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) will race for

Barbara Banke=s Stonestreet Stables, which enjoyed success at

Royal Ascot this year with Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the

winner of the G2 Queen Mary S.

AHe=s been bought for the same connections as Campanelle

and will head to Florida to Stonestreet Stables= facility before

joining Wesley Ward in the spring,@ confirmed McElroy.

The mare=s first foal, the once-raced Castlebar (Ire), was sold

at last year=s sale for i460,000. Like her son, Aimhirgin Lass was

bred by the Irish National Stud and is out of the unraced

Nebraas (GB) (Green Desert), whose three black-type

performers and eight winners include listed winner Seeharn

(Ire), also by Pivotal, and the Group 3 winner Yellow Rosebud

(Ire) (Jeremy). Having delivered a filly by Invincible Spirit earlier

this year, Aimhirghin Lass is now in foal to the stud=s new

recruit, G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain (Ire).

AI know the family pretty well as I was underbidder on Yellow

Rosebud,@ the agent continued. AAnd I remember the brother

from last year. This is a really nice colt, just the type of horse we

are looking for, and we hope he=ll be a Royal Ascot horse.@

McElroy later bought a Bated Breath (GB) colt (lot 54) for

,115,000. The son of Boragh Jamal (Ire), a winning Namid (GB)

half-sister to G3 Molecomb S winner Whitbarrow (Ire) (Royal

Abjar), was offered by Eddie O=Leary of Lynn Lodge Stud, who

pinhooked him as a foal for i44,000.

Lot 153, the ,400,000 daughter of Dark Angel | Goffs

Bold Pinhook Pays Off Most vendors will say that trade was tough at Doncaster

during the opening session of the Orby, but one of the highlights

of the day came for Baroda Stud, which sold a Dark Angel (Ire)

filly (lot 153) for ,400,000 to CBR Bloodstock, bidding through a

phone call to Goffs=s Joey Cullen.

AI can=t tell you much about the filly=s future, other than that

she will be trained in England or Ireland,@ said Cullen after

seeing off underbidder Michael Donohoe.

Baroda topped the first day of the Arqana September Sale

when selling a daughter of Dubawi (Ire) for i620,000, having

bought her as a foal for 300,000gns. The Dark Angel filly was

also a bold foal pinhook, signed for at the Goffs November Sale

by BBA Ireland for i260,000, but she had every right to be

sought after even in her weanling days as she is a half-sister to

the dual Group 3 winner Jack Naylor (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB})

by a sire whose popularity rarely wanes.

She also wasn=t the only popular Dark Angel filly in the Baroda

draft as lot 67, out of the American Grade III winner Button

Down (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), was another to fetch six figures

and sold for ,120,000 to Peter and Ross Doyle.

Baroda Stud got off the mark well when its first horse through

the ring (lot 4), a filly from the first crop of National Stud stallion

Aclaim (Ire), sold to breeze-up pinhooker Brendan Holland for

,130,000.

Dark Angel was also on the list of the Hong Kong Jockey Club,

and Mick Kinane waited until the third-last lot in the ring (241)

before making his first purchase of the day at ,260,000. The

colt, bred and consigned by Guy O=Callaghan=s Grangemore

Stud, is a full-brother to one of Dark Angel=s early stars, the G2

Superlative S. winner Birchwood (Ire), who is now standing at

Haras de la Huderie in Normandy.

Goffs Orby report cont.

Bar one season, his dam Layla Jamil (Ire) (Exceed And Excel

{Aus}) has been mated exclusively with Dark Angel and she also

has a filly foal by him this year.

Magic Mehmas Members of the first-crop of Mehmas (Ire) have wasted no

time in showcasing their sire=s promise this season and on the

back of their success on the track the Tally-Ho Stud resident was

catapulted into the upper echelons of the bloodstock market on

Wednesday morning when lot 51 brought the hammer down at

,330,000.

Hugo Merry placed the successful bid for the Mehmas filly who

is out of Big Boned (Street Sense) and thus a half-sister to

German Group 3 winner K Club (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) as well as the

listed-placed Back To Brussels (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

Bred by Nicky Hartery, the filly was conceived from a fee of

i10,000. Big Boned has a colt foal by Mehmas=s sire

Acclamation (GB) and was covered this season by Ten

Sovereigns (Ire).

AShe=s for a new client and there=s been no decision on a

trainer yet,@ Merry reported. AShe was a fairly obvious pick: she

has a lovely pedigree and is by a very successful first-season sire.

She just looks like she could be a very fast filly.

AI missed on a few Mehmas yearlings last year as I just thought

they were on the small side, but he is not over-big himself and

he is getting winners all over the place and we all have to get on

board.@

Mehmas is now the sire of 33 first-crop winners, including last

Saturday=s G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. winner Supremacy

(Ire).

Father And Son Provide Late Highlights Invincible Spirit was back in demand late on the first day, as

was his son Kingman (GB). Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock

went to ,350,000 for lot 221, the Invincible Spirit half-brother to

G3 Bengough S. winner Eastern Impact (Ire) (Bahamian Bounty

{GB}), who was bred and consigned by Airlie Stud.

He said, AHe=s got size, scope and a lot of class and Anthony

Rogers just said to me that he thinks he=s one of the best they

have ever bred, which is quite a compliment from a high-class

farm.

AHe=s been bought for an old family friend and existing client.

The mare has already bred three stakes horses and of course

Invincible Spirit needs no introduction, he just keeps doing it on

the racecourse.@

Goffs Orby report cont.

Juddmonte Farms will have no shortage of Kingman=s offspring

in their paddocks but the introduction of some new bloodlines is

required from time to time by even major breeding operations

and Juddmonte=s Simon Mockridge secured a Kingman filly

whose pedigree combines at least three extremely popular

stallions. Consigned and bred by Denis Brosnan=s Croom House

Stud, lot 228 is out of a Galileo (Ire) half-sister to Zoffany (Ire)

(Dansili {GB}), who is just one of the three group winners

produced by the Machiavellian mare Tyranny (GB).

Mockridge, standing with his colleague Barry Mahon, went to

,280,000 for the filly whose family also includes recent G1 St

Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}).

Lightning Strikes The sales ring at Doncaster is where the public had a first

glimpse of the Siyouni (Fr) filly who would become known as

multiple Group 1 winner Laurens (Fr). Another daughter of the

Aga Khan Studs stallion (lot 161) was one of the bestsellers of

Wednesday when knocked down to Ted Durcan for ,250,000.

Durcan could not name the filly=s new owner who now has a

lovely future broodmare prospect on his or her hands. The

April-foaled daughter of 3-year-old winner Fork Lightning (Storm

Cat) was bred by Cabalo Ltd and offered for sale through The

Castlebridge Consignment. Her dam is a daughter of G1 Nassau

and G1 Sun Chariot S. winner Last Second (Ire) (Alzao), whose 10

winning offspring include the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains

winner Aussie Rules (Danehill) and listed winner Approach (GB)

(Darshaan {GB}), who is in turn the dam of dual Group 1 winner

Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Goffs Orby report cont.

The filly=s third dam is the celebrated Lanwades foundation

mare Alruccaba (GB) and her sale price on Wednesday

represents a decent return on the 60,000gns given by Howson &

Houldsworth Bloodstock to buy her dam when carrying this filly

at the Tattersalls December Sale.

New Bay For New Venture Dwayne Woods of Brook Stud was in action on Wednesday for

his brother Sean, who will soon be training from Newmarket=s

Shalfleet Stables, the former base of Jeremy Noseda.

The brothers signed up another two well-credentialed yearlings

in Doncaster, headed by a colt from the second crop of New Bay

(GB), who has made an impressive start with his first runners

this year.

Lot 187 from Ballylinch Stud and the son of G2 Prix de Pomone

winner Highlands Queen (Fr) (Mount Nelson {GB}) was sold for

,240,000 and will join the Exceed And Excel (Aus) half-brother

to treble Group 1 winner and Derby Italiano hero Dylan Mouth

(Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) (lot 92), who brought ,170,000 earlier

in the session.

AThey are both for Sean,@ said Woods. AWe=ve bought 10

yearlings so far and these two today are two nice colts. The New

Bay was probably the pick of the sale for me, and I guess for a

lot of other people too as there were plenty of bidders. He=s just

a beautiful individual.@

He continued, AWe=ll be looking at the horses-in-training sale

as well. There are no horses in Shalfleet at present but there will

be from November.@

Near the end of the session Shalfleet=s former owner Jeremy

Noseda signed for a first-crop son of Caravaggio (lot 236) on

behalf of Michael Roy, whose parents Paul and Susan enjoyed

great success with the trainer, including with St Leger winner

Sixties Icon (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

At ,215,000, the half-brother to Chesham S. winner Suits You

(Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}) was the most expensive yearling by

Caravaggio at Goffs. His nine yearlings sold on Wednesday

returned an average of ,88,333.

Another Camelot To Australia The dual Australian Group 1 winner Russian Camelot (Ire) has

done a great job in promoting not just his sire Camelot (GB) but

also the merits of buying European-bred yearlings to export to

the Southern Hemisphere, and that is the plan for lot 124, who

sold for ,160,000 to Alex Elliott.

The agent was working in tandem with Australian syndicator

Brad Spicer and was delighted to have been able to buy the son

of Camelot from Galbertstown Stables. He said, ABrad is unable

to travel but he gave me a list of pedigrees and I looked at the

horses for him and really loved this colt. He=s a lovely individual

out of a Shamardal mare and obviously Camelot has had a great

year.@

The family offers plenty of scope for middle-distance targets in

the colt=s future. His winning dam Edwinstowe (Ire) is a daughter

of the G1 Prix de l=Opera winner Lady Marian (Ger) (Nayef),

whose other offspring include Loxley (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}),

winner of the G2 Prix de Deauville for Godolphin.

The cross of Camelot on Shamardal has already been seen to

good effect in Australia via another exported yearling, the listed

winner Furrion (GB), who was bought by John Foote at October

Book 2 for 60,000gns. The same cross has also produced the

Lloyd Williams-owned G1 Irish Derby winner Latrobe (Ire).

Two Fillies For White Birch Peter Brant=s White Birch Farm bought subsequent dual Grade

I winner Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) from the 2016 Orby

Sale and, though Brant was absent this year, Demi O=Byrne was

in Doncaster to buy two yearlings for the owner on Wednesday.

He was another to plump for a yearling by Camelot and signed

for lot 143, a filly from the family of G1 Irish St Leger winner

Duncan (GB), at ,130,000. Bred by O=Connor International Ltd,

the daughter of Ethel (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) was bought

as a foal for i100,000 and was offered by the Mahon family=s

Mountain View Stud.

O=Byrne stayed in play for the following lot through the ring

(144), a filly from the first crop of Caravaggio whose half-siblings

have realised i260,000 and i220,000 respectively at the Orby

Sale in the last three years. Their dam Euphrasia (Ire) (Windsor

knot {GB}) won the G3 Blue Wind S and is the dam of 82-rated

Goodwood winner Bright Eyed Eagle (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}).

The New Jersey-based D.J. Stable has been to the top echelons

of American racing, having campaigned the likes of Jaywalk

(Cross Traffic), the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and

Eclipse Award champion filly of 2018.

Jon Green, the general manager of D.J. Stable who runs the

show alongside his father Len Green, said he has had his eye on

European sales for a few years and on Wednesday D.J. Stable

took the plunge, signing for two yearlings early during the

opening session of the Goffs Orby sale.

First up was lot 5, a colt from the first crop of Caravaggio out

of a daughter of the Group 1-winning Zee Zee Top (GB)

and Kayf Tara (GB). Two lots later DJ Stables signed for a No Nay

Never filly who is the first foal out of A Bid In Time (Ire) (Fastnet

Rock {Aus}), a half-sister to multiple group-winning sprinter

Libranno (GB) (Librettist) (lot 7), for ,52,000.

AWe struck early, we bought two horses very early in the sale,@

Green said. AWe feel like there is an opportunity usually early on

at sales to strike before everyone is finished their morning

coffee. We loved those two horses, a Caravaggio colt and a No

Nay Never filly, and we just felt like they were value at their

price points and also their points in the sale.@

D.J. Stable campaigns A Thread Of Blue (Hard Spun), who won

three stakes races on the grass in the U.S. last year including the

GIII Palm Beach S., and Green said the venture into the

European yearling market is the stable=s next step in enhancing

its turf programme.

AThis is really a new twist on what we=re trying to accomplish

with our racing operations,@ he explained. AWhen we took a look

at where North American racing is trending it looks like there

are going to be more opportunities to have turf horses and more

opportunities to have distance turf horses.

AA couple years ago we made a very conscious decision to

study what was going in Europe, study bloodlines, study racing

and people we felt comfortable working with, with the idea that

in time we would ultimately buy some of these racehorses.@

The 12 horses purchased by D.J. Stable at Keeneland

September included a Galileo (Ire) filly out of G2 Cherry Hinton

S. and G3 Albany S. winner Sander Camillo (Dixie Union) (Hip

368) for $285,000 and an American Pharoah son of Group 1

winner and producer Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) (Hip

344) for $100,000.

Green said the ultimate goal is to campaign D.J. Stables=

European purchases in the U.S., but he does not yet know at

which point they will travel Stateside. In the meantime, the

stable has gotten a jump start on its European racing stable with

the private purchase of 2-year-old filly Earth Strike (Ire) (Zoffany

{Ire}), a half-sister to Group 1-winning stayer Order Of St George

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who won at first asking at Leopardstown on

Aug. 20 before finishing seventh in the Listed Ingabelle S. on

Sept. 12.

AShe is trained by Joseph O=Brien and will be running in a stake

next week at The Curragh,@ Green said. AWe=ve made a pretty

heavy investment into European bloodstock and European

bloodlines based on some of the opportunities we feel are going

to present themselves in America in the next few years in

racing.@

American-based syndicate West Point Thoroughbreds also got

its name on the buyers= sheet on Wednesday, signing for lot

207, a daughter of Kodiac (GB), in conjunction with Peter Doyle

for ,85,000. West Point=s Terry Finley noted that while the

group has been active on the international stage in small ways in

years past, shopping at Orby did mark a deviation from the

normal business plan. He said West Point saw it as an

opportunity to broaden their portfolio while the market may be

down.

AWe=ve been working on trying to enhance that pipeline from

Europe,@ Finley said. AI met Peter Doyle probably about eight

years ago in South Africa and we=ve stayed in touch and we=ve

tried to buy some horses, it just never really all fell into place.

But everything has fallen into place now, we=ve been talking all

week and I know they were very active. They said earlier today

they thought it was a really great buying day.@

PHILIPPART DE FOY JOINS NEWMARKET

TRAINING RANKS By Emma Berry

Amid a concerted effort from the French racing authorities to

encourage British owners to race their horses in France, one

new trainer in Newmarket is flying in the face of this promise of

far greater prize-money.

Belgian-born Kevin Philippart de Foy served a long

apprenticeship in Chantilly under the wing of Criquette Head

and he recently completed a rounded education as assistant

trainer to James Fanshawe. During his four years at Fanshawe=s

Pegasus Stables, the 29-year-old was bitten by the English racing

bug and has decided to set out at his stall at Newmarket=s

historic Machell Place Stables, which is about to be vacated by

Ed Vaughan.

AI arrived in England thinking I would go back to France to train

but I fell in love with British racing. I=ve made some good

connections and I like the lifestyle here,@ said Philippart de Foy,

whose mother, former

jockey Brigitte Jacques,

trains a small string in

Chantilly. AWe are always

complaining that things

aren=t going well but racing

in England is in people=s

blood. Because of the

pandemic people aren=t

going racing but usually

there are so many people

at the racecourse and that

is something that doesn=t

really happen in France.

Yes, the prize-money is

better there at the

moment but nobody goes

racing.@

He continued, AI spoke about it with Criquette, who was like a

mother to me when I was in Chantilly, and she really

encouraged me to start training here in England. I know

prize-money is not great but there is a really good international

market to sell horses.@

Before joining Fanshawe, Philippart de Foy, who also rode as

an amateur and a professional jockey, had a taste of racing

stables in most of the major racing jurisdictions. From Head, he

completed a stint on The Curragh with John Oxx and later spent

18 months working in America for Christophe Clement.

ACriquette always said that I should travel so she arranged for

me to go to America to work for her former assistant Christophe

Clement. The good thing about working for Christophe is you

start in Florida, where everyone is together over the winter, but

then when the horses go on to Belmont or Keeneland he puts

you in charge of a barn and you are almost running a little

operation yourself. He comes once a week and spends the day

with you and goes through everything. His attention to detail is

incredible and you learn so much from him.@

His time in Chantilly with Head has clearly left its mark, not

least for the seasons he spent riding her stable star Treve (Fr)

(Motivator {GB}), and Philippart de Foy is now in the process of

assembling his own team to occupy the boxes of Machell Place

adjacent to Warren Hill.

AI was talking with [Jockey Club Estates manager] Nick Patton

about different options in Newmarket and then Ed Vaughan

announced he would be packing up at the end of the season,@

he says. AColin Murfitt owns Machell Place and he has been very

helpful and is sending me a yearling. It=s a great location and a

very well designed yard that was built in 1884 but has very

modern facilities.@

Despite his mother=s attempts to keep him away from racing,

Philippart de Foy has long

held an ambition to

become a trainer before

the age of 30 and, with a

decent hands-on education

behind him, he is now well

on target to do just that.

He won=t be alone in the

ranks of new trainers for

the coming year as his old

friend from his days at

Clement=s stable, Harry

Eustace, is set to take over

from his father James just

down the road from

Machell Place.

AThere is a really good

camaraderie in Newmarket

among the young trainers and assistant trainers,@ he adds.

AObviously I have thought a lot about starting up in the current

climate with the pandemic continuing, and it is a worry, but I

asked the people who are supporting me what their feelings

were and their view was that there would be better value for

money buying horses at the sales. In an ideal world I would

rather have started at a better time but the yard was available

and I felt that I have enough support from people who were

quite positive about sending horses.@

Philippart de Foy has been recruiting his string since the

summer horses-in-training sales and already has some older

horses to race through the winter while the yearlings are

learning the ropes.

Enable and Frankie Dettori | Scoop Dyga

Philippart de Foy Joins Newmarket Training Ranks cont.

He says, AI have some owner-breeders and I think in the

climate you have to do some syndicates and partnerships, so I

am starting up a racing club with a mixture of horses in training

and some yearlings. If someone rings me and is interested in

getting involved I want to be able to offer the full range of

ownership options.@

DETTORI: APRESSURE IS LESS THAN LAST

YEAR@

Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will on Sunday attempt to

accomplish what has never been done before in winning a third

G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe. The man who has been in her

saddle the past three years and steered her to all 11 of her

Group 1 victories, however, said he is feeling less pressure than

he did at her first attempt at the historic feat 12 months ago,

when she was second to Waldgeist (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

AWe have already achieved something historic by winning the

King George for a third time,@ he said, reflecting on the

6-year-old=s successful 2020 campaign to date. AFrankly, the

pressure involved is less than last year, and it=s not because

there will be fewer people in Paris. It=s because we have already

experienced disappointment. The three hours which followed

last year=s defeat were the worst in my entire professional

career, and I think that Enable was similarly downcast.@

AI=m praying that we will get drawn somewhere between one

and eight,@ Dettori added. ARain is forecast, and the ground will

most likely be heavy, [but] I hope that we won=t experience

extremes of going, as happened last year. There are two horses

that like to go to the front, Serpentine and Sovereign. So taking

up a good position will be >de rigueur.= The ground is a very

important factor, and Enable has already shown that she can

handle it.@

The rainfall in Paris this week has meant that Enable has

moved back ahead of the 3-year-old filly Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

in the betting markets.

AI have spoken with my colleagues and racing analysts--they

say that a heavy track could count against Love, because her

low-to-the-ground, fast action is better suited to good ground,@

Dettori said. AGenuine heavy ground will turn the Arc into a

stamina test--that will play to Stradivarius=s strengths--and, on

the contrary, the distance may prove a bit long for Persian King,

although anything trained by Andre Fabre warrants respect.

AThere are other horses which shouldn=t be underestimated,

such as Sottsass. He hasn=t had a hard campaign and boasts prior

experience in the Arc de Triomphe [third last year].@

GBRI LAUNCH E-MAGAZINE >THE BRITISH

BRIEFING= Great British Racing International (GBRI) launched a quarterly

e-magazine titled >The British Briefing.= Produced in association

with the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, National Trainers

Federation, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ascot, Goffs UK and the

Federation of Bloodstock Agents, the online publication

encapsulates headlines focusing on Britain=s racing and

bloodstock industries. To view the Autumn 2020 issue, click

here.

AIn publishing The British Bulletin, we do not wish to naively

imply that the British racing and bloodstock industry has an easy

road ahead; we all know that with the UK government=s

announcement regarding continued crowd absence for up to six

months, possibly more, we face a dauntingly steep uphill climb,@

said Minty Farquhar, Acting General Manager of GBRI. ARather,

in collating and highlighting our chosen success stories, we offer

readers in all corners of the world the chance to take a moment

to reflect on the recent achievements of British racing=s

professionals and the world-class thoroughbreds to whom they

dedicate their lives, no matter how fierce the pandemic.@

The Winter 2020 edition will be published at the end of

December.

RACING WELFARE JOIN FORCES WITH

SLEEPSTATION Racing Welfare announced the partnership with sleep therapy

service, the NHS accredited Sleepstation. The online program,

which is designed to help with longer and better quality sleep, is

free of charge to anyone in the racing industry.

The online program, which may last up to eight weeks, is a

person centered approach where patients would previously only

be able to access in leading sleep clinics, known as CBTi

(Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia). The Sleepstation

online program provides benefits, including no waiting lists, no

need to take time off work, no travel costs involved and no set

appointment times.

CIR LAUNCHES >STEP ON TRACK= PROGRAM Careers in Racing (CiR), the careers marketing arm of the

British Horseracing Authority (BHA), announced the launch of a

new program designed to introduce young people from Black,

Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to the

horseracing industry. Step On Track, which has been developed

in response to the lack of BAME representation within several

areas of British racing, aims to engage young people from ethnic

minorities with the sport, as well as highlighting career

opportunities. The program will take place during Black History

Month in the October half term (Oct. 26B30) and will include

talks from inspirational racing figures, activities and the

opportunity to go racing as a group at an appropriate point in

the future. Upon completion of the course, the candidates will

receive ongoing mentoring and guidance, as well as assistance in

finding work experience placements within the industry.

The scheme will initially be open for between 6-12 people by

way of a pilot, with the aim of increasing participation in future

schemes.

Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the

BHA said: "The proportion of BAME representation is an area

which many sports are considering at present whether that be

at participant, executive or leadership level. Racing is committed

to striving to be a diverse and fully inclusive industry, but many

are aware that young people from ethnic minorities may not

have easily available access to learn about the sport of

horseracing. We hope that Step On Track will be a positive initial

step to showcase racing both as a sport and as an industry to

young people who may not have encountered it before, with the

longer term aim of growing the scheme to become a permanent

part of our wider program of existing careers marketing

activity."

MIDNIGHT BISOU RETIRED

Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute--Diva Delite, by Repent), the

reigning Eclipse Award-winning older female and five-time

Grade I winner, has been retired from racing, according to

Jeffrey Bloom, co-owner and managing partner or Bloom Racing

Stable.

AI cannot begin to tell you what this mare has meant to me, my

family, and my partners,@ said Bloom. AThe places she has taken

us and the thrills she has given us are immeasurable. And just to

be in her presence is to feel what greatness is all about. Her

calm, inquisitive demeanor, her fierce determination in a race is

unlike any other horse. She is all class. I=m just so grateful I got

to be a part of her incredible journey, and I=m extremely excited

to watch the next phase of her life, watch her become a mother,

and for her babies to hit the track with all of her class and

elegance, and continue the Midnight Bisou legacy.@

Bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Midnight Bisou

was bought back on a bid of $19,000 at the 2016 Keeneland

September sale, but improved over the next seven months and

was hammered down to Bloom as agent for $80,000 at the OBS

April Sale the following spring (under-tack video). Turned over

to Bill Spawr in California, Midnight Bisou was sent off at debut

odds of 21-1 for Bloom and Allen Racing LLC and was beaten a

nose by future Grade I winner Dream Tree (Uncle Mo), to whom

she was also beaten a nose in the Desi Arnaz S. in her next start.

STILL PLUGGING AWAY, LEATHERBURY

WINS RACE FOR 62ND CONSECUTIVE YEARby Bill Finley

Now 87, trainer King Leatherbury likes to tell a joke, the one

about his destiny and his family's burial plot.

"I feel perfectly good and healthy but when I visit my family

plot down there, where my whole family has been buried,

there's this little sign. It says, >King Leatherbury, coming soon.'"

In the meantime, Leatherbury is not done yet or ready to walk

away from a career that has earned him a spot in the Hall of

Fame and fifth place on the list of all-time winningest trainers

with 6,504 victories. He reached another milestone Friday night

at Penn National when wining a $10,000 claimer with

Paratycachaca (Jazil). In a streak that began way back in 1959 at

Sunshine Park (now Tampa Bay Downs), he has now won a race

for 62 straight years. It was his first win in over 10 months.

Midnight Bisou=s first start for Steve Asmussen resulted in a romp

in the 2018 GII Mother Goose S. | Chelsea Durand

Midnight Bisou Retired cont.

Midnight Bisou became the queen of the hill in Southern

California in 2018, winning the GII Santa Ynez S., the GIII Santa

Ysabel S. and the GI Santa Anita Oaks (video) in convincing

fashion before heading to Churchill Downs for her next

appearance.

The Monomoy Girl Meetings... On the strength of that form, Midnight Bisou was made the

23-10 favorite for the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, but she

endured a nightmarish trip from a wide draw and did well to be

third, beaten just over four lengths by Monomoy Girl (Tapizar).

With better and richer options for his filly in the eastern half of

the U.S., Bloom elected to transfer Midnight Bisou to trainer

Steve Asmussen, who saddled the filly to a towering six-length

success in the GII Mother Goose S., with Madaket Stables now

part of the ownership group. Clearly second to Monomoy Girl in

the GI CCA Oaks, the dark bay was third in the 10-furlong

GI Alabama S., then crossed the line a neck second to Monomoy

Girl in the GI Cotillion S. (video) before being elevated to the

victory. She closed the season with a rallying third to her arch-

rival in the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff.

The Making of a Champion... While Monomoy Girl spent the entirety of 2019 on the shelf,

Midnight Bisou dominated the division, with seven wins from

eight starts. Ultra-game in taking the GI Apple Blossom H. by a

nose in April, she was imperious in adding the GI Ogden Phipps

S. and GIII Molly Pitcher S. before throwing down with Elate

(Medaglia d=Oro) in one of the year=s most thrilling stretch

battles in the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga (video). Cont. p4

The Personal Ensign winner=s circle | Sarah Andrew

Midnight Bisou cont.

A nose best that day, she romped in the GII Beldame S. before

suffering her first defeat of the season in the Distaff. She was

nevertheless the runaway winner of the Eclipse, besting her

Distaff conqueror Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize) by a wide margin.

Training On at Five... The morning of the Distaff, Bloom announced that Midnight

Bisou would be withdrawn from the Fasig-Tipton November sale

and would instead focus on a 5-year-old campaign. Connections

selected the inaugural $20-million Saudi Cup for their mare=s

seasonal debut, and despite racing far back early, she made eye-

catching progress up the rail in the final furlong to finish a close

second to Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) (video). In the

meantime, Monomoy Girl had made a successful return to

action and a much-anticipated rematch loomed in the GII Fleur

de Lis S. June 27. But the Brad Cox runner was re-routed for the

GII Ruffian S. at Belmont two weeks later and Midnight Bisou

took full advantage, rolling home by 8 1/4 lengths. Beaten a

neck into second by Vexatious (Giant=s Causeway) in this year=s

Personal Ensign Aug. 1, Midnight Bisou was being pointed for

this weekend=s GI Juddmonte Spinster S., but she was off

following a work at Saratoga this past Monday and was sent to

Rood and Riddle in Lexington to be examined by Dr. Larry

Bramlage. The renowned vet confirmed Wednesday that

Midnight Bisou had sustained a sesamoid fracture in her right

front fetlock. Surgery is not indicated and the injury will not

impact her future as a broodmare.

Midnight Bisou will be consigned by Elite Sales to this year=s

Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Nov. 8.

King Leatherbury with Ben's Cat | Jon Kral/Maryland Jockey Club

Midnight Bisou cont.

AI want to thank trainer Steve Asmussen, assistant trainers Scott Blasi, Darren Fleming, her main exercise rider Angel Garica, groom Gerardo Morales (Chocolate), and the entire Asmussen team for the devotion and care they provided each and every single day,@ Bloom added. AI would also like to thank her regular rider, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who shared a very special bond with her, and was aboard for all five Grade I wins, as well as the other jockeys who were fortunate enough to climb aboard. Finally, a sincere thank you to all of Midnight Bisou=s legion of fans who have been extremely loyal with their support and love for our Champion throughout her career.@

Midnight Bisou was never out of the top three in her 22 career

starts at 10 different racetracks, compiling a record of 13-6-3

and bankrolling $7,471,520. She has been sent to WinStar Farm

where she will be turned out in the interim.

King Leatherbury cont.

"That sounds great because it's so many years. I didn't even

realize it had been that many years," he said. "I saddled my first

winner in 1959 and here it is 2020."

But 2020 has been a difficult year for him. Having the sort of

stable that struggles to win even one race in a year is something

he will never get used to, not when he has won numerous

training titles and has won as many as 365 races in a single year.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 13 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 1, 2020

Ben=s Cat won 26 black-type races | Maryland Jockey Club

King Leatherbury cont.

He understands why: there aren't many owners willing to hire

someone his age.

"I'm 87 years old, for God's sake. Nobody is going to give me

horses," he said.

Up until 2017, Leatherbury

didn't necessarily need a large

stable to enjoy success. He was

the owner and trainer of Ben's

Cat (Parker=s Storm Cat), the

obscurely bred turf sprinter who

won 26 stakes races and earned

2,643,782. But when Ben's Cat

was retired after just three starts

in 2017, Leatherbury didn't have

anything to fill the void. He won

just eight races in 2018, the first

time in his career that his win

total was in the single digits, and

only two in 2019. This year, he is

1 for 19.

"Winning one race in one year is nothing to brag about at all,"

he said. "Fact is, I am down to four horses and one of them is a

young horse who is not ready yet. So I have three horses

running and they are all turf horses, which restricts their ability

to start because you get a lot of times when it rains and the

races come off the turf. That's the predicament I am in. I'm

happy to have won that race, but winning just one race doesn't

mean anything."

When Leatherbury was among

the leading trainers in the

country in the >70s, >80s and

>90s, he had no problem

attracting owners. With

Leatherbury among the best

there was at playing the claiming

game, his owners knew that

their trainer would win races for

them.

"I have had great owners in my

career and have great stories

about them," he said. "They

were wonderful people. They

just died off. Generally, the

owner is older than the trainer. I

had Mr. (Woodrow) Marriott who bred horses and I always got

eight to 10 from him. He lived to be 93 years old, but sooner or

later you go. I had my own horses for as long as I could. Cont. p7

TDN International Editor Kelsey Riley

Leatherbury cont.

He continued, AGenerally, if you own a horse you lose money.

If you don't you are extremely lucky."

He is down to one owner, Norman Lewis.

"Last year as the year was coming to an end, he said, >King,

what is your plan for next year?' meaning whether I was going to

retire or not. I said to him that since he was the only owner that

I have it all depended on what he was going to do. He stuck it

out. He is a breeder. When you train for breeders you don't win

as many races as you do when training for claiming outfits. A

breeder gets very attached to his horses and has sentimental

interest in them. You can't manage them as aggressively. You

don't have the ability to drop them and lose them."

Leatherbury doesn't want to retire. Like many other trainers

who have spent most of their adult lives doing just one thing, he

can't imagine not training horses.

"I don't want to retire because this has been my life," he said."

I love it. If I retired, what else would I do?"

But he understands that if Lewis gets out of the business he

could find himself without any horses to train.

"I don't want to retire but I might be forced to if I lose this one

owner," he said. "Then I'll just throw the towel in. When it

comes that time, I'll have to face the facts."

But he's not ready for that day to arrive. As long as he has

horses to train he will keep doing what he's been doing for 62

years and look forward to his next winner.

TDN INTERNATIONAL EDITOR KELSEY RILEY

TALKS ARC ON WRITERS= ROOM In addition to all the Stateside action this weekend--the final

leg of the Triple Crown, Fall Stars Weekend at Keeneland and 11

Breeders= Cup AWin and You=re In@ events--the biggest race of

the year in Europe will also be run with Sunday=s

G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris. Wednesday

on the TDN Writers= Room podcast presented by Keeneland,

TDN International Editor Kelsey Riley joined the crew as the

Green Group Guest of the Week to talk about the much-

anticipated showdown between Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire})

and Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), how heavy rains may impact the

running and much more.

Asked whether or not the Arc is a two-horse affair as the

bettors have surmised, Riley said, AOh no. It=s very much an

open race, and the major development this week has been the

rain that=s falling in Paris. Right now, the course at Longchamp is

listed as >very soft=, which is the same as what it was last year

when Enable ran second, and there=s more rain still forecast to

come ... So you have a horse like Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars

{Ire}), who=s been the best stayer in Europe the past couple

seasons. I think that the soft going will help his chances a bit. It=ll

turn the race into a bit more of a stamina contest.@

Stradivarius, currently a distant third choice for the bettors

behind Enable and Love, is not the only potential upsetter on

Riley=s radar.

ASottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was third in last year=s Arc over this

same soft going and ran a very game race there,@ she said. AHe

won a Group 1 race [the Prix Ganay] in France earlier this year.

His trainer, Jean-Claude Rouget has spoken very highly of him

this week coming into it, saying this is the best he=s ever had

him, and that they=ve had this as their key target ever since he

finished third last year. Another horse that I find a little

interesting is Rouget=s >other= horse, the only other 3-year-old

filly in the race besides Love, Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}). She

was very impressive winning her first two starts this spring, and

Jean-Claude, right from that point, was saying, >This is our Arc

filly.=@

TDN Podcast cont.

The success of fillies and mares has been a consistent theme

throughout Arc history. Riley was asked about why they=ve

competed so frequently and done so well against males in the

race.

AWith the weight scale in France this time of year, the 3-year-

old fillies get a big weight break for the Arc,@ she said. AThey

carry 121 pounds, which is what Enable carried when she won

her first Arc. Three-year-old colts carry 125, older mares 128

and older horses 131 pounds. It=s also down to the fact that,

especially at this time of year in Europe, there are fewer

opportunities at the Group 1 level for [fillies and mares] over the

mile and a quarter to a mile and a half. In both Britain and

France, there are only two Group 1 races for fillies and mares

from the summer onward.@

Elsewhere on the show, the writers discussed the Horseracing

Safety Integrity Act passing the U.S. House of Representatives,

broke down the 11-horse GI Preakness S. and reacted to

Improbable (City Zip) taking charge in the older male division.

Then, in the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, they

analyzed the Kentucky Supreme Court decision that puts the

future of historical horse racing machines in doubt and tried to

figure out why alternative forms of gaming continue to grow

while racing=s handle declines. Click here to watch the podcast;

LANG Despite losing the ultra-talented GISW Volatile (Violence) to an

untimely injury in late September, the Hall of Fame Steve

Asmussen barn still has another big bullet to fire in the sprint

division in the form of the up-and-coming unbeaten sophomore

Yaupon (Uncle Mo) in Thursday=s GIII Chick Lang S. at Pimlico.

The L. William and Corinne Heiligbrodt colorbearer, a

$255,000 OBS June acquisition (:10), made it a perfect three-for-

three in front-running fashion while making his stakes debut in

Saratoga=s GII Amsterdam S. last time Aug. 29.

The Chick Lang 4-5 morning-line favorite has earned triple digit

Beyer Speed Figures in each of his last two starts.

"He's extremely fast,@ Asmussen said. AHe's got an elite

amount of speed. We wanted to give him all the maturity we

could. We were trying to follow a similar plan with him as we

were with [champion sprinter and 2018 Chick Lang winner]

Mitole for the Heiligbrodts.@

Yaupon=s main foe of his nine rivals entered may be drawn

right to his outside in post 10. Arkaan (Into Mischief), a sharp

winner of his first two starts, including a runaway allowance tally

at Delaware July 27, cuts back in distance after setting the pace

and collecting third behind GI Preakness S. runner and >TDN

Derby hero Authentic (Into Mischief) from getting his first feel

for the track Wednesday morning as he prepares for Saturday=s

GI Preakness S. (video)

Under the watchful eye of seven-time Preakness-winning

trainer Bob Baffert, Authentic jogged the wrong way on the

outside rail one day after arriving from Churchill Downs.

AHe just went out there for a little jog. He looked good,@

Baffert said. AComing off that plane yesterday, he was like a keg

of dynamite. He has so much energy, that horse. He=s just so full

of himself.@

Baffert finds himself wishing that the Preakness were to be

contested two weeks after the Derby, given how well Authentic

has taken the race.

AI would have loved to run two weeks later because he was

just full of himself two weeks afterward. It=s just giving horses

time to freshen up,@ said the Hall of Famer. AYou have new

shooters now. It=s so turned around now. I feel real good about

it. I think he=s going to run his race. He hasn=t regressed. He

looks great.@

Baffert admits that the coronavirus pandemic has cast

something over a pall over the Classics, but he=s just happy

they=ve taken place at all.

AIt would have been horrible if we didn=t have the Derby, the

Preakness,@ he said. AThe Belmont was sort of different, more

like the Dwyer. The Derby and the Preakness, at least we got to

run them. And we have beautiful weather.

AIt doesn=t feel like Preakness, but it will the day of. It=s like the

Kentucky Derby,@ he continued. AIt didn=t feel like Derby that

day, but when that gate came open it felt like Derby. That=s the

way it is. When that gate comes open it=s going to feel like

Preakness. That=s what it=s all about. All you are hoping for is

that your horses show up and when they turn for home you=re

hoping you have something to root for. That=s it. That=s all you

can ask for.@ (Click here for an interview with Bob Baffert)

RIDERS UP DOCUMENTARY TAKES LOOK

BEHIND SCENERS AT AFIRST SPORTS

BUBBLE@ by Bill Finley

As the realities of the coronavirus started to spread across

California and the country, the team at Santa Anita wasn=t sure

how to prepare for what could have quickly escalated into a dire

situation for the track and the sport. But what began as a

scramble of sorts led to a well-coordinated plan. Racing would

successfully return to the historic Southern California track and

with an innovative wrinkle. During the racing week, the jockeys

were required to live in a bubble in campers situated on track.

What might at first have seemed to be an imposition quickly

turned into a collegial summer camp for the riders.

AIf you have to do something like this, this is the way to do it.

I=d like to say life in quarantine is pretty tough, but I=d be lying

like crazy,@ jockey Mike Smith says.

Santa Anita was shut down by the coronavirus following the

Mar. 22 card but returned May 15 and the meet was completed

without any serious setbacks. How it did so is the subject of the

entertaining documentary from NBC Sports Network ARiders Up.

The First Sports Bubble.@

While horse racing has figured out how to operate during a

global pandemic, that wasn=t the case when COVID-19 started to

upend life as we know it. As ARiders Up@ begins, the

management team at Santa Anita is considering the worst-case

scenarios.

AWe started seeing the news day by day get worse and we

realized businesses were going to start being put out of business

for the time being,@ said Stronach Group Executive Director of

California Operations Aidan Butler. AUnlike any other business,

the racetrack is like a town. Eight hundred people live here.

Eighteen hundred horses live here. It=s not like any other

business. That was the realization that we could have a real

crisis on our hands. A little bit of panic set in across the group

here.@

This was a case where panic turned into the mother of

invention.

AAt that point it was >What are we going to do?=@ Butler said.

AWe have to make a decision here. We can start to ask animals

to leave here and people to start to get out and try to get it to

an amount that was controllable or double down and try to get

her open as quick as we could.@

The horses and the backstretch community were the easy

part. There was plenty of room to accommodate them and

because the horses needed to be cared for, there was never any

serous question about allowing the backstretch workers to

continue on as normal. The jockeys were the bigger issue.

Should they be brought back and then, had some of them tested

positive, racing would have likely had to be shut down again. It

was decided to house them on track in RV=s that were normally

used on movie and television sets that had been closed due to

the pandemic.

AWe built a small city in a matter of a week,@ said Senior Vice

President and Assistant General Manager Nate Newby.

Santa Anita=s bubble would be the first of its kind in sports, a

precursor to what the NBA and the NHL would do with their

players once they resumed playing.

AI certainly had concerns,@ Smith said. AWhat=s going to

happen? Are we going to be close to everybody? Are we going

to be piled into a room all together? Is it going to be a little bit

scary?@

Irad Ortiz Jr. | Lauren King

Understanding that confinement can be stifling, Santa Anita

set out to make things as enjoyable as possible for the jockeys.

With Butler and Newby acting as head counselors, there was a

50th birthday party for veteran Aaron Gryder, karaoke, poker,

movie night and group dinners. The jockeys, who usually go

their separate way after the races are over, bonded.

AIt was a great time being with the guys,@ jockey Edwin

Maldonado said. ALike being in a man cave.@

It worked. By the time the meet ended without further interruption on June 21, over 1,000 COVID-19 tests had been administered to jockeys and essential employees. Not one jockey or racing employee tested positive.

Riders Up will air Friday on NBC Sports Network at 3 p.m. PT

and will be shown again Saturday at 9:30 a.m. PT. It was

produced by the Hennegan Brothers.

IRAD ORTIZ JR. TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., the leading rider in America, has tested

positive for COVID-19, the jockey confirmed in a phone call

Wednesday afternoon. The news was first reported by Dave

Grening of the Daily Racing Form.

Ortiz, who had been serving two consecutive five-day

suspensions for careless riding July 3 and 31 at Belmont and

Saratoga, respectively, said that he was asymptomatic. He rode

his last race Sept. 16 at Kentucky Downs, and had not ridden in

New York since Sept. 7, the last day of the Saratoga meeting.

AI=m feeling good,@ said Ortiz. AI had the test on the 28th

because I was coming back to ride in New York, and I had to do

the protocols, and it came back positive. I=m here in Saratoga,

and I=ve been at home, and I haven=t left home, so how that

happened, I don=t know, but I guess it happens.@

Ortiz is currently the leading jockey in the country with

$14,743,742 in earnings. He has won the Eclipse Award as the

nation=s top jockey the past two years.

NYRA=s Director of Communications, Patrick McKenna, said

that because Ortiz had tested positive in Saratoga, the protocols

that he would be required to follow would be determined by the

Saratoga County Department of Health. Those protocols, said

McKenna, require Ortiz to Aself-isolate for a period of time no

shorter than 10 days. Following the completion of the period of

isolation, and provided that Ortiz Jr. remains asymptomatic,

then he will be evaluated for a potential return to the NYRA

jockey colony. The Saratoga County Department of Health

retains jurisdiction to address public health matters in the

county and, in this case, the discontinuation of

quarantine/isolation for individuals who have tested positive for

COVID-19 and are pursuing a return to the workplace.@

MEADOWLANDS TEMPORARILY CLOSES

DUE TO COVID-19 The Meadowlands Racetrack, a top harness racing venue in

New Jersey, temporarily shut down starting Tuesday evening

after several employees tested positive for COVID-19. Live

racing will take place as scheduled Friday, but without fans. The

facility will reopen to fans Saturday at 10 a.m.

The following is part of a statement the track release Tuesday

evening:

AThe racetrack continues to take an aggressive stance against

the spread of COVID-19. Over the past several days the medical

team has identified a few individuals that tested positive for

COVID-19 that they acquired either in the workplace or at home.

Contact tracing is ongoing.

Out of an abundance of caution the entire facility will be shut

down for top-to-bottom sanitization. The Meadowlands

Racetrack is committed to providing a safe and healthy

grandstand for all employees, patrons and fans.@

NEW VOCATIONS LAUNCHES 11TH BREEDERS= CUP

PLEDGE New Vocations, the largest racehorse adoption charity in the

country, has kicked off its 11th annual Breeders= Cup Pledge in

support of Thoroughbred aftercare. The program, which has

raised over $650,000 for aftercare, is seeking owners and

trainers of Breeders= Cup contenders to pledge a percentage of

their Breeders= Cup earnings to New Vocations for the

rehabilitating, retraining, and rehoming of retired racehorses.

AThe need for our services continues to grow each year,@ said

Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director.

AThis year, in particular, has been very challenging due to the

obstacles presented by COVID-19. Over the last decade, we

have grown this Pledge into an extremely important fundraiser

and we had our most successful year yet in 2019, raising over

$130,000. We hope to have another record-breaking year in

2020 and are so grateful for the generous contributions of our

donors who have continued to support and value our program.

The Pledge is a great way for owners and trainers to give back

and support New Vocations= aftercare efforts.@

Hillsdale S. cont.

Pounded down late to odds-on to remain unbeaten, the dark

bay broke towards the front but was out-sprinted by a few from

there to track in midpack. He uncorked an ominous move

around the bend and was spun wide into the lane as four or five

looked to have a chance at the top of the stretch. He quickly

proved to have the most to give, however, and kicked on

straight and strong as a green Lookin At Justice gave chase.

The winnere has a yearling half-sister by Taprize and his dam

was bred back to that full-brother Untapable (Tapit) for 2021.

Hungarian Princess dominated state-bred foes including

favorite Diamond Solitaire (Majestic Harbor) by seven lengths

here Aug. 24, but settled for fourth in a much tougher open

allowance here Sept. 15. Well supported in this black-type debut

that likely represented some class relief, the bay broke well but

was allowed to find her rhythm and settled in third last but in

touch. She began to pick off rivals with a sweeping, four-wide

bid into the turn, and found no competition in the stretch as she

was kept after to keep running while displaying significant

greenness. The winner has a foal half-sister by Free Drop Billy

and her dam was bred back to Flameaway. Her second dam is

MGSW Humble Creek (Humble Eleven). Click for the

BEER CAN MAN (c, 2, Can the Man--Cheesecake, by

Dynaformer) broke through over course and distance last time,

and was subsequently flattered when the Wesley Ward trainee

he beat that day came back to graduate in a lucrative Kentucky

Downs heat. Backed in half of his 6-1 morning line quote, the

bay was scrubbed on early to take up a stalking spot out wide.

He ranged up to challenge the longshot pacesetter heading for

home, and wore that stubborn foe down by midstretch before

pulling away late by 1 1/2 lengths. Charles Chrome (California

Chrome) got into the exacta. The winner=s dam, who hails from

the extended female family of MGISW Student Council

(Kingmambo), was bred to Fast Anna for 2021. Sales history:
