Hi folks,I thought I would include a picture of myself at mydesk while studiously working hard during thislockdown.Like many in the entertainment industry we arebattling on without any support, trying to keep youup to date with events and so we are grateful for yourhelp again this month. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up withthe fast moving changes that the pandemic brings, especially as we gradually come out of lockdown so it

is important to call your regular club or one you wish to visit before attending, even if it is not mentioned in these pages. When we begin each issue it is a mammoth task trying to sort the informationso it would be helpful to email rather than send messages via social media orMessenger so we can get it all in one place. If you just use social media, which isall well and good, then be aware that it is here today and gone tomorrow andtrying to find it again is rather difficult. At least with Cross Country it is alwaysthere to look back at. While writing about social media, why not join our CrossCountry Magazine group on Facebook and set your notifications to keep up todate. We shall need agents to help sell the magazine around the circuit when we getback into print and, although it is early days, if there are any volunteers wewould like to add them to a possible list.Nigel Karney has asked some interesting questions within these pages so ifanyone has any answers then I am sure he and other readers would appreciatethem. Read his letter under the heading 3rd Sunday CMC, Surrey. Finally, it is goodbye to Lenny Whitehead who has been forced to retire. He isone of the stalwarts of the British Country scene who has been part of manygreat and quality acts, the likes of which we may not see again so good luck tohim and may I say the same to all those artists who have chosen this to retirerather than return after this pandemic.Take care and stay safe.

Rob’s view ...

Here we include areminder about Ed Cox,our featured artist in Aprilthis year. He says he wouldjust like to support clubsgetting back up andrunning as well as otherartists getting going andearning what they have to.He has a driving schoolwhich is providing his mainincome now, so if he earnsless as an artist so as toenable others to earn whatthey need to, to get goingand pay their mortgage heis happy to do that, especially if it helps a clubthat needs to build upfunds in order to do that.He says he has made a lotof friends over the past 20years and knows how muchthe pandemic is hurtingeverybody, music loversand artists alike. He alsounderstand that if clubsonly have 30 percent of anaudience they are not goingto afford to pay what most

artists need.Ed has always enjoyedperforming to line dancersbut is equally comfortableplaying to a listeningaudience with either newCountry or old Country. He loves to sing and wantsto sing for you. Ed’s love away fromperforming are his familyand friends all over thecountry. Ed loves animalsand has three beautifuldogs of his own, he is ananimal lover and loathescruelty. Ed has worked for 25 yearswith children withchallenging behaviour inthe care system. He enjoystime in the gym, watchingmovies and hiding in thecinema. He’s a fan of JohnFarnham, Prince, RichardMarx, Elvis Presley andloads of Country artists, new and old but is a hugefan of George Michael.

Ed loves cake (not coffee).Ed hates coffee!Ed’s birthday is April 12thwhich is why he’s in theApril issue; presents arewelcome. He is nowknocking his socks off inthe gym so he can enjoythe cake!

Hello Rob,Greetings from 3rd SundayCMC in Woking.I thought it may be helpfulto update you on where weare at. I also organise all the musicentertainment at the socialclub where our Countrymusic club is held. We haverecently been givenpermission by our localcouncil to run live musicperformances, although itis subject to tight Covid-19control measures including:Restricted audiencenumbers to reflect socialdistancing; Musicians withsocial distancing betweenthem (except those who livetogether; No dancing;Audience to remain seatedexcept to use facilities andpurchase drinks; andmusic to be at moderatevolumes (people should nothave to raise their voices tohave conversations. These are in addition toour other hygiene controlswithin the club (eg: signingin all attendees; staffbehind screens; one-wayroute; and anti-bacterialgels and sprays, etc). We have also been givenapproval to recommencedancing lessons providedthese are also controlledwith social distancing, nochanging partners and heldin a well ventilated space. On that basis I plan onrecommencing our partner

dancing lessons in October(monthly on Sundayafternoons).I am not recommencingthe CMC as this is heavilyreliant on a line dancingaudience and I am not surethat this can be organisedsafely indoors or that mylargely female audiencewould be confident toattend at present. We arenot a 'listening audience'CMC nor would I want usto become one. I would be really interestedto know if any other clubsare restarting line dancingindoors. What has beentheir experience and howthey organise this; are theymarking out the dancefloorand restricting the dancesto ones that are essentially'on the spot' (no weaves/vines and only 180 degreeturns, etc)? Also, I wonder if any linedance teachers are givingthought to putting togethera repertoire of 'on the spot'dances.Thank you for everythingyou are doing to keep ourCMC communities alive. Itis all very challenging atpresent but, frankly, Icannot see much scope fora major restart until wehave a vaccine in play.Kind regards,Nigel Karney, Woking,Surrey. Tel: 07783 518771 / 01483828675.

3rd Sunday CMC, SurreyHi Rob,We have just been to theQuickdraw Festival andwanted to say what a greatjob Charlie & Lynda Greenand the reduced Quickdrawteam have done getting thefestival on and overcomingall the hurdles put in theirway. We would also like to thankall the artists. The format was verydifferent this year, it wasoutside with everyone inbubbles and was wellorganised and ran smoothlyafter a few teethingproblems getting everyoneto understand and complywith the Covid rules. Theweather even played a partwith heavy rain for some ofthe time on the Friday and

Sunday but the audiencestuck to their guns andremained watching. It was lovely to see andhear the artists, most ofwhom played new songswhich they had learnedduring lockdown. In our opinion Kay D wasthe star of the show, hervoice is outstanding andher two sets included lots ofthe new songs she hasmastered during lockdown. We have already bookedfor next year and arelooking forward to going, hopefully with it back tothe normal format.Regards,Clive & Lynda Jones.

I am still under the care of the hospitaland need more tests and treatment. However, it looks likemy musical careerhas been broughtto an unexpectedearly end. I have had manyhappy years ofperforming on theBritish Countrymusic scene withsome top artists, both homegrownand internationaland have madesome wonderfulfriends -performers andfans alike. I have been veryfortunate to workall over the UK, Europe and the USA, be it on stage, tv,radio or even on the high seas! It's been great fun most ofthe time. Clint Bradley wins AWA award

LettersHi Rob,On Thursday August 13thin Fort Worth, Texas I wasawarded Western MaleArtist of the Year by theAcademy of WesternArtists (AWA).Unfortunately, because ofCovid-19 travel restrictionsin the United States I wasunable to attend theawards ceremony, however,I was able to watch theceremony unfold over a livestream and was on the‘edge of my seat’ as Iwaited to find out if I hadwon the best artist award -which was the last categoryof the night. I’m extremelyhonoured to be the firstBritish artist to win.I had also been due toperform at the ceremonyand fully intended to bethere, had it not been forthe travel restriction to theUSA. I now have an agentin the US and am working

on a tour which willhopefully happen after thecurrent situation ends.Fortunately I hit the roadearly in January andFebruary with my westernband and was able tocomplete a very successfulScandinavian theatre tourbefore the travel bans andlockdowns started. We thenplayed a series of shows inGermany and Holland, returning to England withonly a day to spare beforelockdown started, so wewere very lucky. There’s no denying that thevirus has reaped havocacross the whole musicscene, regardless of whichgenre you work within. Ihave lost 90 percent of allmy live shows for 2020,which was shaping up to bean excellent year, gig wise. However I am nowworking on reschedulingfor 2021. Of course, all of

us are praying that thecurrent situation will bebehind us by 2021. I hadbegun to look at thepossibility of pre-production on my nextwestern album beginningin late 2021 but those planswill now be delayed untilthe future is a little clearer. Most independent labels,

including the one that Irecord for, have had to haltall 2020 releases, so there isa very large backlog to betaken care of before anynew projects can begin.Very best wishes,Clint Black.www.clintbradley.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/ClintBradleyuk/.

LettersHi Rob,Like so many others, ourline and partner dancingcame to a crashing halt inMarch with theannouncement of Covid-19 restrictions andlockdown. Our plannedsocial dances had to becancelled too and I am sureit has made us all the moreaware of how much wevalued the fun, laughterand exercise we all sharedtogether. At Mulepackers, we werevery quick to set up aZoom platform where wecould all "virtually" meet, dance together and learnnew dances. It was a steeplearning curve into LOLMlicensing, optimisingBroadband speeds, sharingscreen music for optimal

sound and hosting andmanaging the Zoom room.In spite of the challenges,we've had a large numberof our members "comingalong" 2 or 3 times perweek. We've backed thisup with supplementaryteaching sessions for ourmembers on our website. We've enjoyed learning"Pen to Paper", "MoreThan You'll Ever Know"and "Down to theHonkytonk". It's been veryreassuring for us to seeeach other through thesechallenging times wherethe loneliness and anxietyof social isolation can takeits toll. We've also had some zoomparty nights where peoplehave sung, playedinstruments, told jokes and

introduced and comparedtheir cats, dogs and evenfavourite childhood teddybears. It has certainly keptour spirits up.We started to have somesmall outdoor get-togetherswhich necessitated a lot ofreading guidelines, extrainsurance and safetymeasures, but these weregreat fun and brought thenew discipline of dancingbetween our newlyacquired football/sportscones. The weather hasbeen reasonably kind to us,but now we are enteringautumn and winter, thismight not be so easy.As village halls andcommunity centres aretentatively opening up, weare keeping a finger on thepulse. Several of our

venues, we fear, are toosmall to allow us thenecessary and safe socialdistancing, but we may beon the brink of hiring areally large hall whichallows us very wide berths, good ventilation and all themitigations possible. It is atricky one as everybody'ssituations are different. Weare also very mindful of themental health issues thatcan result from feelingisolated, so quite a few ballsto juggle! Please include our detailsin your club listings as wecontinue to do our best tostay together and keepdancing. Best wishes andstay safe everyone.Mike and Mel,Mulepackers CWDC

Hi all,We’ve done a range of 15minute line dance videoson YouTube for our classes(nine so far) - obviouslybecause of the lockdown. There are four dances onevery video. So 36 dancesin total with no talking, justdancing. The response from ourclasses has been really goodand they have all said thatit is helping them keeptheir hands in - as it were.So it’s been well worth it.The crucial bit is that wehave largely kept thedances on the easy and/orfamiliar side so that theycan dance easily once theyhave started and don’t needto follow the video all thetime. Also, this way themusic and dances are ‘setup’ so its easy to just clickon the video and getdancing.Of course its totally free -no charge! There are very quick walkthroughs at the end of thevideos - if needed.

There is a range of levelsfrom beginner tointermediate.

Anyway, it has workedbrilliantly for us and so wethought it may be of use toothers. For our club we are waitinguntil the beginning ofOctober to start up againbut we’ll see! There are three ways to seethe videos:-1 - Go to this address foran example video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dG-b3UcGKU.2 - Access the video fromthe home page of ourwebsite and then click onany video -www.vmyers.com.3 - go to YouTube andenter: ABCoasters LineDance - and they will belisted thereThere is a new dance alongvideo every Saturdaymorning.Take care all and stay safe.Val Myers & TanyaHawkesworth.

LettersHi Mal & Rob,I have been following thenew Facebook page thatyou have been running. I have been nowhere eventhough Julie and Fred atPheonix Rebels haveopened with distancing andCovid-19 compliance and Iam not intending to beventuring out as yet. Here in South Ribble, which is next to Prestonand near to Blackburn, weare in special measures sofor now we are notchancing going out andmixing. I still haven't beenfurther than the post boxyards away from my gate.I think everyone wasthinking at first that itwouldn't be going on forthis length of time. I have spoke to Julie andshe confirmed that most ofmy Cross Countrycustomers have notreturned. I am putting the feelers outto see if anyone will wantto have a magazine via

social distancing for thenext issue but at present Icannot commit to takingon the usual order. As regards to the gigs Iusually send in, no oneapart from Julie appears tobe opening and of courseeven they are not sure ifthey will be able tocontinue. Obviously theyare hoping they can do butthese times are sounpredictable. I just thought I had best letyou know what my positionis as I would hate you tosend my usual magazinesto find I can not sell them.I hope you are bothkeeping safe and well.through these uncertaintimes.Jean Berry, Lancashire.

Hi Jean, you are in the samepredicament as we are and sowithout any clubs nor agents weare continuing to stay with adigital publication rather thanwaste money thereby avoidingtotally closing down if possible.

Hi Rob,It’s looking very unlikelythat I will be able to putdance classes and livemusic events at Route 66 inWorthing for theforeseeable future. Mymain hall is a secondaryschool and consequently afairly high riskenvironment. 90 percent ofmy dancers are in theretired age range and Ineed to consider theirsafety too. If I am allowed back thisyear, classes will be

restricted to 30, sociallydistancing dancers and nolive music for the present.Consequently the followingsocial dance events arecancelled. October 10th - JohnDoherty; and November14th - Martin Jaye. These are sad times for ourindustry and I wisheveryone a safe return tosome sort of normality. Regards,Mike Howarth, Route 6, Worthing, West Sussex.

Last Chance SaloonDear Cross Country,I've had to cancel ourremaining gigs for 2020.We are still hoping forAdam Carter being able toperform ‘Elvis Night 2’ forus in January with supportfrom Amy Morgan but

Cambridge CMC reopening

LettersHi Cross Cpuntry,We previously had tocancel our dances forMarch, April, May, andJune, we don’t have anydances in July and August. Our village hall is re-opening on 1st Septemberbut at the moment hasrestrictions, such as onlygatherings of 30 people or

less and no live music etc. This would not be feasiblefor our club so we have hadto cancel our dance for26th September. We’re not sure about therest of the year yet, we willkeep your magazineinformed. Thanks, Carol, Quinn’sRaiders, Hampshire.

Quinn’s Raiders, Eastleigh, HampshireDear Readers,Firstly, we would like tothank Rob & Mal for theirgreat work for stillcontinuing the magazineon line and keeping us intouch.Fortunately, life goes on formost of us but in a worldrendered very different tothat which we knew. Wehave been told we couldreturn to our venue shortlyif we were able to complywith the Governmentguidelines re Covid-19. Of course, for a full-ondance club this is just notpossible and not justbecause of socialdistancing. In the meantime, we mustthank and congratulateFred (of Fred & Linda) whoby plant selling and bootfairs has donated anabsolutely magnificent£800 to our charities - AirAmbulance and CLICSergeant. Well done Fred, you are amazing. We willshortly be forwarding atotal of £2,200 betweenthese two charities and wealso thank all those whohave helped raise thisamount through a verylimited club year. Our thoughts go out to allthose who have suffered aloss during this pandemic. Also to the NHS employeeswho have stuck to theirposts regardless of risk tothemselves and familiesand finally, merely in thecontext of this letter, to allthe performers who are

undoubtedly experiencinggreat hardships. We find the currentsituation frustrating to saythe least and there does noteven appear to be aglimmer of light on thehorizon. Only recentlyhave the Arts have beenhanded a multi billionpound rescue package inorder for them to protecttheir staff and overheads.Somewhat fortunately, wehave no staff nor very fewoverheads but it appears tobe extremely unlikely thatclubs will re-open as longas social distancing exists. With seating and dancing, few clubs, if any, couldcomply even with the onemetre ruling, let alone paya performer along with theoverheads. It seems highly unlikelythat venues such as ourswill be able to open beforethe end of the year andeven if there was furtherrelaxing of the rules thereare many who would justnot want to take the risk ofjoining a crowd, no matterhow responsible. Our sincerest apologises toall our members, visitors, agents and performers andwe trust that you willunderstand our actions inthis matter and we hope tosee you all in the not toodistant future. In the meantime all pleasestay safe, well and takecare. All good wishes Paul &Penney, Kent.

Hi everybody, I hope you are all keepingsafe and well during thesedifficult times. Justsearch for my page to findthem. People are able to leave atip if they would like to

Quickdraw Festival with Brian Herby

Well they did it even wheneverybody said it would nothappen. The Quick DrawFestival 2020 went aheadon Thursday August 20th.Opening the weekend wasNikki Jo Brown and TonyRouse.Nikki was a new artist forme and for a firstimpression did a good jobwith a choice of songs fromBrooks & Dunn, GeorgeStrait, Keith Urban andLeanne Rimes. Tony Rousethen did his opening setbeginning with a song fromMidland, Playboys. Hesang a fabulous choice ofmaterial and performed asonly he can. It was astrange setting seeingeverybody sitting in anddancing in an area of threemetres round with a rowbetween the pods whichcreated an illusion of lots ofspace. The weather for thefirst night was good withwarm breezes. We hadanother set each from Tonyand Nikki which broughtthe night of the event to agreat close. The following day beganwith Cliff Weston doing agreat set choice to keep thedancers happy, eventhough they were havingsome problems dancing onthe grass. Following Cliffwe had a brilliant first setfrom the fantastic LittleRock starting their set with

Hal Ketchum’s Tonight WeMight Just Fall In Loveagain. Steve and Chris gavea very sharp performancecovering some classicCountry from RestlessHeart,Tom Petty,Travelling Wilburys,Notorious Cherry Bombsand finishing withSeminole Wind to end agreat set. Then it was timefor a second set from Cliffwho began with a goodversion of the GarthBrookes classic The Dancewhich included mainlydance material and finishedwith an Eagles songPeaceful Easy Feeling. Bythis time the weather wasstarting to change as thewind started to build andthe final set of theafternoon with Little Rockbrought a very windyafternoon to end whichcollapsed many tents andwe decided not to attendthe evening session due torain. We had reports thatsome hardy souls hadenjoyed the evening despitethe rain.Saturday’s session featuredsets from Martin Jaye andKay D with Martinperforming a good set witha mix of linedance andclassic Country. I enjoyedthe couple of MerleHaggard songs he sang.Kay D featured a lot ofdifferent songs in her firstset ranging from NeonMoon, Shades Of Grey,Follow Your Arrow andDrink Responsibly fromKelsey Ballerini. Martinthen returned for hissecond set beginning withMr Lonely. This set wasdifferent with a choice ofmaterial which rangedfrom Steve Earle to ChrisNorman. To end theafternoon Kay D did agreat version ofCommitment amongst her

songs. Our artists for theevening were John Dohertyand the Nadine Somersband. John performed agood first set and coveredthe line dancers needs wellwith many up to date songswith Down To TheHonkytonk as well asclassics from the BellamyBrothers, Vince Gill andTravis Tritt. Next on werethe Nadine Somers Bandwith a fantastic upbeatperformance with RobChilds on lead, Bob Keeleyon rhythm guitar and theEssex Dynamo as Rob callsher, Nadine Somers. Thisband are celebrating 25years together this year andknow each other so wellstarting their first set withCarlene Carter’s EveryLittle Thing and I Fell InLove were meant we wereoff to a flying start. Theyare the ultimateprofessionals and read theaudience so well coveringmany decades of musicand were my highlight ofthe weekend so far. JohnDoherty returned for hisfinal set and again did agreat mix of material fromWillie Nelson, TheMavericks and a great songfrom Michel Johnson calledGive Me Wings. Nadineand the guys returned forthe second set with WhenWill I Be Loved openingtheir set. Lots of the songsthey do are well known, butare still very enjoyablestandards and remain so.The whole day was anothergreat day of entertainmentonce again.Sunday began with lesswind than we hadyesterday and slightlywarmer, so were settling infor the final day and ithanother great line up werelooking forward to. Startingthe afternoon off was TreyJackson who has not been

Linda & Charlie Green.

Texas Gun.

Trey Jackson

Quickdraw Festival continued with Brian Herby

This was anexcellent set featuring Joeon banjo on many songs. Both acts did a second setand Trey Jackson startedwith several songs aboutrain as the heavens opened.Trey your were a little rayof sunshine on a dampafternoon. The evening wasa final treat with a doubleheader of Richard Palmerand Texas Gun. Richardwas on first singing a mixedrange of songs startingwith Small Town SaturdayNight and Playboys beforea great versions ofCalifornia Blue andCommitment. He endedhis set with a song I hadnot heard before called MyLighthouse. Texas Guncame on next and werejoined by Derek Thurlbyon steel and guitarbeginning with Past ThePoint Of Rescue. George Jrwas in excellent voice asusual with lots of talkbetween father and sonwhich make this band greatentertainers. We heardsome good covers of HereComes My Baby, LovingAll Night plus a great 60smedley as well as George jrsinging A Legend In MyTime brilliantly. Theweekend raffle followedand then it was time tobring the festival to a closewith Richard Palmerleading with another greatset including Bring HimHome from Les Miserablesto end his set. It was thentime for the party to begin

Pentney CMC,Narborough Road,Pentney, Norfolk PE32 1JDAnita HopkinsWell at last we have hadsome great news. Pentneyhad it’s first live gig lastnight, and what a night itwas. We were entertainedby the brilliant MarcJames. He is not only agreat singer and songwriter,he really knows how to getthe audience going. As it was concert style withno dancing allowed he wasteasing our line dancers byplaying all their favouritesongs and telling them thatthey had to learn to do it aschair dancing, they were sofunny. Everyone was in agreat mood and up for a bitof fun, Marc certainly gaveus that. If you have never seenMarc you must make ityour job to try and get toone of his gigs, you wouldcertainly not bedisappointed. He is one ofthe best we have ever seen.He puts his heart and soulinto the songs that he issinging, and boy does hesing some songs. I don’tthink I have ever seenanyone fit as many songsinto one evening.Terry and the gang did asuper job of sociallydistancing the club, andhad done everything thatthey could to make sureeveryone was safe. Track

Menus onthe table that you wroteyour food order on andtable number that theydisposed of after they hadplaced the order with thekitchen. Brilliant jobeveryone. She possessed adistinctive and emotionalsinging voice and was one ofthe most popular andcontroversial performers torise to popularity during theNashville Sound era. As with her friends, Patsy

Dottie’s career started withher top 10 hit, Here ComesMy Baby Back Again, whichwon her a Grammy awardfor Best Female CountryVocal Performance in 1965,the first female in Countrymusic to receive a Grammy. This double cd compilationhas 50 songs, which includes

The Secret Sisters havereleased three full lengthalbums since 2010 includingtheir more recent, 2017’sYou Don’t Own MeAnymore for which the twinsreeived a nomination forBest Folk Album at the 60thannual Grammy awards. Saturn Return was recordedin Washington State and has10 songs written by Lauraand Lydia Rogers andfeatures the sisters singing

individually for the first time, instead of relying solely ontheir trademark harmonies, which are impeccable. The album heralds thearrival of a new era for theladies who have bothundergone extreme changeand transformation duringthe making of this album. They sing of struggle, ofageing and of coming toterms with the realities oflife, whether good or bad.

The songs on this album areall of equal merit and it is,for me, top drawer material. If I was pressed to pick outfavourites they would beLate Bloomer, Hand OverMy Heart, Tin Can Angeland Water Witch. Brill!

Carly Pearce has releasedher self- titled sophomorealbum which consists of 13tracks. The collection ofsongs threads together stagesand forms of admirationthat have taken on deepermeaning with her marriageto husband, Michael Rayand the unexpected loss ofher mentor and producer, busbee.Called the down to earthvocalist, she has quicklycarved out her own highly

honest, emotionallycompelling place in a verypop-Country world. Fiercelyrooted in the classics, the girlwho left her Kentucky homeand high school at 16 to takea job at Dollywood hasgrown into a woman whoembraces the genre’sforward progression. Herduet with Lee Brice, I HopeYou’re Happy Now, has riseninto the top 15 at Countryradio and garnered over 64million global streams.

Fans and critics aregravitating towards herevolution from heartache, remorse, nostalgia toexuberance. Closer To You kicks off thislove letter of songs with ItWon’t Always Be Like This,Love Has No Heart, WomanDown, You Kissed Me Firstand it finishes with GreenerGrass.

Seasoned entertainers, assolo performers, together asSavannah or as part of theband Louisiana, ChrissyByrne and Mark Smithbring us their latest cd, StillHolding Things Together. They begin their ridethrough the Country musiccycle mixing traditionalwith modern and whatbetter way to start than withthe dance floor filler, LoveHer For A While, recordedby Sam Outlaw, which is a

good way to start thismusical myriad of soundswith Mark taking the leadvocals. Chrissy keeps the uptempo mood going with thesong Snowbird which wasfirst recorded in 1969 byGene MacLellan and shedelivers this songbeautifully. The dreamyballad, If I Could Only Flyslows the tempo downbefore we are off again withJolene and Evangelina, SingMe Back Home and the

fabulous First Fool In Linewhich is always included inmost UK acts repertoire.Holding Things Together,Texas Time, Things I CarryAround, Blame It On YourHeart, Footlights andSomething Stupid end thisexcellent cd.I cannot complimentChrissy and Mark enoughon their choice of songs, vocals and production, which are all first class.Brill!

Larkin Poe is an Americanroots rock duo originallyfrom north Georgiacurrently living in Nashville,Fronted by sisters, RebeccaLovell and Megan Lovell, their music features strongsouthern harmonies togetherwith heavy electric guitarriffs and slide guitar. They performed at the 2014and 2016 Glastonburyfestivals and were voted BestDiscovery of Glastonbury

2014. Both sisters have also touredas backing musicians for avariety of other artists, mostnotably Elvis Costello,Conor Oberst of BrightEyes, Kristian Bush ofSugarland and Keith Urban.Self Made Man follows their2018 album, Venom & Faith, which was nominated forBest Contemporary BluesAlbum at this year’sGrammy awards.

A lot is often bandiedaround regarding what isand what isn’t Countrymusic, which is a matter oftaste. This album for me is afar cry from the Countrymusic which I enjoy andwould be better beingpromoted down the rockchic road, it was not for meI’m afraid. There is no doubt the sistersharmonise well.

Larkin Poe - Self Made Man

The song Troubadour is aballad in which the narratorreflects on his life as atroubadour, feeling that heis content with what he hasaccomplished. I was ayoung troubadour when Irode in on a song / I'll bean old troubadour when I'mgone. One asks oneselfcould this be the thoughts ofMartin Jaye who has nowreleased his new album,Troubadour! Included in this selection

are a variety of well knownCountry songs, both classicand modern, whichcompliment each other. We start our muiscal pathwith the excellent All MyEx’s Live In Texas recordedin 1987 by my favouriteartist George Strait. CheapCologne, Imagine That andLost Highway come nextwith the tongue in cheeksong, I’m Still Not Dead, sung originally by WillieNelson.

The dance floor filler, LoveTrip gets us on our feet nextand carries us on to JimmyBuffett’s Margaritaville.Guitar Town, WeymoreBlues, Things I CarryAround, Frame Of Mindand the title track, ofcourse, Troubadour. This Highway and WastedTime which were bothwritten by Martin bringsthis variety of tunes to anice end.

It has taken PatsyThompson 12 years torecord this new album. Dueto family obligations she hashad to put her career on theback burner but now thingsare looking much rosier. It’sa new beginning and a timeto move on for her. What matters is that theCanadian born singer/songwriter made her way toTexas and back and nowWest Coast audiences willonly be better for it.

Fabulous Day is her 6th cdproduced by Chris Rolinwho also lent hisextraordinary guitar talentsthroughout the album.Patsy has a rich tone oneminute, moving onto a rawedge the next and thensmooth and tender with ahint of soul. The title track, FabulousDay begins the first of 10tracks on the album, it is aroaring number which takesyou on a ride full of passion

before we move on to NeonLights and Picking You Up,a foot stomping song.Dreamin’ slows the mooddown to a musical interludeof wonder and is for me thebest song on the album.Other tracks worth amention are Passion and IThink About You. This album is aptly namedbecause I thought it was justfabulous and well worth thewait.

Born in Massachusetts andraised in Western CanadaSuzie Ungerleider issinger/songwriter OhSusanna, who is set torelease her album, SleepyLittle Sailor in a deluxeedition which will beavailable on cd, digital andvinyl. Featuring 11 songs, five ofwhich are acousticrecordings, including thetitle track, Sleepy Little

Sailor brought her a newfound platform for hersongs in 2000. They havenow been beautifully re-worked. Also included aresix previously unreleasedrecordings alongside theoriginal album. River Blueand Kings Road are newlyrecorded while Sleepy LittleSailor, Sacrifice and BeautyBoy are taken from theoriginal demo sessions. These songs are as powerful

today as they were 20 yearsago. There is no doubt that herpared back acousticversions highlight theeffortless strength of herbewitching voice and hertalent for songwriting. With her emotive crystallinevoice and folky sound shehas been compared to anumber of Americanaartists, with Gillian Welchbeing one of them.

The Cumberland RiverProject is the self-titledalbum from Germansongwriter, Frank Renfordt. He crosses a vast musicalsoundscape of Countrymusic with occasionalinfluences from pop to bluesto rock. Despite this diversity hisown songwriting isunmistakeable in all of the13 songs included whichwere inspired by Jon Pardi,Alan Jackson and Jason

Aldean. The opener, Back On TheRoad sets the tone of thesongs which areintermingled with somepunchy, drum and guitardriven sounds mixed withthe traditional elementsattributed to Countrymusic. Summer’s Gone,Hometown and what weare seeking at the moment -Craving For The Beach -are standout tracks for me.

After saying that I enjoyedlistening to every one of the13 songs on here which arewell worth a listen over andover again. There were oneor two tracks which I foundvery danceable and wouldbe a must for anychoreographers out there. This is a must have albumfor fans of solid Countrymusic with a penchant forBrothers Osborne, JoshTurner or Justin Moore.I loved it!
