Haveirim Y’karim – Dear Friends –
Mi vot ’rikhim kavanah – “Commandments require
intention”.
That’s the general conclusion of the discussion in
Talmud on whether we must be fully mindful and
aentive when fulfilling mi vot, or whether the
important thing is that we’re fulfilling them.
Appropriately enough, given the approach of the High Holidays, this
discussion can be found in Tractate Rosh Hashanah.
The Jewish month of Elul, which begins with the New Moon falling on
August 11 and 12, is our time of spiritual and emotional preparation
for the Yamim Nora’im, the “Days of Awe” of Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. What beer time to cultivate the practice of “intentional
Judaism”, embodied by the Talmudic principle of mi vot ’rikhim
kavanah?
What is “intentional Judaism”? Here’s an example. We usher in the
High Holiday season with S’lihot, special penitential prayers. The
Ashkenazic tradition is to begin reciting S’lihot at the end of the
Shabbat that is at least three days prior to Rosh Hashanah. This year,
Ohev Shalom will host the community S’lihot service on Saturday
night, September 1.
But there’s also a Sefardic custom of reciting S’lihot from the beginning
of Elul. We can practice “intentional Judaism” by drawing from this
custom and adding a prayer or meditation – either from traditional
liturgy or of our own creation – to our daily routine, beginning August
11.
Kavanah – “intention” – is often given an almost mystical air. Yet, it is
also extremely practical. The root meaning of this word is “direction”.
Kavanah – in fulfilling mi vot, in prayer, or in life – is being aware of
where you are, and where you’re going.
This year’s High Holidays will be one of firsts. It’s the first year that
Rabbi Rubinger will be our rabbi emeritus; it’s the first year that I’ll be
in the role of our congregation’s lead rabbi; and it’s the first year of
Ohev Shalom’s second century.
Thanks to the dedication or our rabbi emeritus – and his predecessor,
Rabbi Alder, of blessed memory – we know where we are. And thanks
to you, we know where we’re going!
L’shalom,
David

Dear Friends,
I don’t have a great memory for
most things. People and their
names are very difficult for me to
bring up as needed. There are
some things from my childhood
in Cleveland that have stayed with me to this day.
I remember all the usual things like the smell of the
food or the look of our house. I even remember the
piano I learned to play on.
My synagogue memories are scaered. COS has
taken that part of my brain. There is one thing I do
remember. I remember how excited my father was
to be given an honor during services. He always
felt it was a special chance to participate and to
show his kids how important it was to aend
services. Sometimes he would carry the Torah.
Occasionally he would get an aliyah to the Torah -
to chant the blessings before and after the reading.
Siing there, watching him up on the bimah was
very exciting for me. It was like I knew a TV star.
I was watching one of our ritual ushers passing out
honors at a recent service. It’s funny, but I had
never really paid aention before. It was so
interesting that I decided to observe this activity for
a few weeks in a row. I noticed that some people
seemed to be up there very regularly. With a
congregation of 150 - 200 people I assumed I would
see new faces each week.
A NOTE FROM YOUR CANTOR
Much to my surprise, I saw person after person
turn down the offer of an aliyah or an honor. What
could cause such behavior? Were they shy? They
were very hesitant to go up, even for an ark
opening. I don’t claim to know the minds of the
congregation, but I wonder if some people are just
afraid of making some sort of mistake. Rest
assured that our ritual team and clergy are ready
to assist in any way possible. Even at B’nai
Mi@vah services I sometimes see a family relative
or friend truly stressed out over something as
simple as opening the ark.
This is one of the reasons we request all the
students to aend services regularly. We want
them to be comfortable in our service and with all
the ritual activities that take place - not just the
prayers. If you are one of the individuals for
whom coming up on the bimah is just too
overwhelming, please ask. There are few things
that we like beer than when new and different
people get a chance to be part of the service. It
brings them closer to the synagogue, making their
membership more real and immediate. Last but
not least, when you are up there you can tell me
your name and, God willing, I will remember it.

WHY?!?
This is the question that is so often asked of me
and I wonder why my friends and even some
family do not “get it.” For as long as I remember,
my husband (of beloved memory) and I have been
answering this question, always feeling like a
broken record.
WHY?!?
Why do I have to belong to a synagogue, why do I
have to pay dues and what am I going to get out of
this?
Well, if you do not pay dues, how is the air
conditioning going to keep you cool or the heat
going to keep you warm? How do you get to enjoy
a beautiful Kiddush luncheon to share with your
friends? Who pays for the mortgage, who pays the
teachers that are educating your children – a place
they feel at home- who pays for the lay staff and
who pays for the clergy’s salary? Yes, you love to
hear the sermon and the Cantor chanting
L W
beautifully. So please stop asking why – this
magnificent place that we are all welcome to is
here for us. For whatever reason we need it –
maybe a child geing married, a loved one in the
hospital or sadly a family member in need of a
funeral service, it’s here for us. I have been asked
so many times, “Linda, you are on social security,
could you not use that money someplace else?”
Of course, but what would my life be without this
place, whether it is here at Ohev or in any other
place I live. When I walk into shul I feel wrapped
in warmth. There is such a feeling of belonging.
It is like the first time you walk off the plane when
landing in Israel.
So let us stop asking WHY and start asking where
my journey at Ohev should begin. The first step is
to come join us on Friday evening or Saturday
morning for services and stay for a nosh. Then
join us at a Sisterhood event. You will be so
pleased you did. I certainly was hesitant, but now
six years later, the Rabbis and Cantor even know
my name.
With my hugs and smiles,
Linda
MACHANEH OHEV 2018 was
a blast. Our theme was “the
decades” in celebration of
Ohev Shalom’s 100th birthday.
We learned what was going on
in the Jewish community,
Ohev community and America
during these decades. Songs, dances, games,
crafts and even snacks related to our theme. We
look forward to MACHANEH OHEV 2019 June
3-7.
Being in summer mode, I have the opportunity to
stop, reflect and plan. We are always looking at
ways to meet the changing needs of our students,
madrichim, parents and teachers. The teaching
staff will be meeting a few times during the
summer to plan, adapt and prepare for the new
school year. To date we welcome Sari Greenstein
to our Kitah Dalet/4th grade team both Sundays
and Wednesdays. Lori Zollman will also be
teaching both Sundays and Wednesdays in Kitah
Dalet. Sivan Goldberg will be moving to a

Haveirim Y’karim – Dear Friends –
To help make sure our list for Mi Sh’beirakh L’Holim, the prayer for those who are ill, is current and cor-
rect, we want to remind you of the procedure for adding and removing names, and share a new element
of that process, based on your feedback in our strategic planning process:
To add a name to the list, call or email the synagogue office; please give your name and contact infor-
mation, as well as the name of the person to be added to the list
It’s traditional to use a person’s Hebrew name for Mi Sh’beirakh L’Holim; please share that, if known,
along with the person’s English name
When a person you’ve placed on the list has recovered, please call or email the synagogue office to
remove the name.
NEW – The list of names for Mi Sh’beirakh L’Holim will be restarted at the beginning of every new
Jewish month (Rosh Hodesh). The synagogue office will notify those who have placed a name on
the list in advance of the new Jewish month. To keep a name on the list for another month, simply
let us know at that time. This new procedure will begin with the start of the Jewish month of Av
on Friday, July 13, 2018.
L’shalom,
Rabbi David Kay

Men’s Club Shavuot Men’s Club sponsored the
religious service for the first day of Shavuot on
Sunday, May 20. The service was held in
conjunction with this year’s Religious School step-
up ceremony. Not only did this join together
different groups from our synagogue, it also gave
aention to the holiday of Shavuot --- the often-
overlooked festival where we celebrate the giving
of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. We are grateful for
having the opportunity to bring aention to this
important holiday, and to share the spotlight with
our school children. Our thanks to Amy for
helping to make this possible.
Speaking of religious services . . . . We had
planned on carrying out our plan in time for our
Shavuot service to provide a mechanism for
helping our hearing-impaired congregants and
guests with some mechanism that would make the
service more accessible to them. This plan was in
keeping with Ohev Shalom’s unique diversity.
Although we were unable to accomplish this in
time for Shavuot, we are working with Rabbi Kay
and Cantor Robuck on obtaining a cost-effective ---
and “hearing enhancement-effective” --- device.
Stay tuned for further updates!
New Members Social at Ken Davis’ Home Come
one, come all! The Men’s Club annual new
members event is scheduled for Sunday, August 5,
2018, at 1p.m. The event is being held at the home
of Ken and Joy Davis. Ken’s address is 2059
Biltmore Point, Longwood, 32779. Of course, it is
open to both new and current members. We will
be celebrating Israel in tribute to 70 years since its
renewal, discussing how Men’s Club can beer
meet the needs of a changing world, and, of
course, relaxing, kibi@ing and just plain having a
good time.
High Holiday and Weekly Shabbat Morning
Ushering The High Holidays once again are
approaching. For many years, Men’s Club has
spearheaded the door ushers. As always, we have
a great need for volunteers. The amount of time
any one usher devotes to this service depends on
what he or she can do. Whether you have much or
lile time to spare, we would be grateful for your
help. We also still have a great need for
volunteers to usher at services on Shabbat
morning. Once again, your commitment of time
need not exceed what you have to spare. If, for

WHAT IS HAPPENING
WITH THE COS
SENIORS?
Will there be a COS
Seniors Group for 2018-
2019?
Yes. I will continue as the COS Seniors President.
I have received a very strong commitment from
the COS Executive Board and The Menʹs Club
Executive Board, that they will be helping our
group and supporting our programming. If you
havenʹt met our newly elected COS President,
Steve Hornik, he will be there helping out. Make
sure you say hello and thank him for his
commitment to our synagogue and our senior
group.
Is the dues structure or monthly event admission
changing?
No. The annual dues of $10 per person remains
the same and the cost of our monthly events will
remain the same, $5 per person for members, $8
per person for non- COS senior members. The
usual nosh at the end of the performance will
continue to be served.
What about the time and dates?
They will remain the same. We will host a social
event on the first Sunday of the month, except for
the summer months and major holidays. The
starting time will remain at 2 p.m. Please mark
your calendars.
The first Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. is “COS
SENIORS DAY.”
Will the entertainment be changing?
Last year I booked all of the entertainment. You
might have noticed, it changed a lile.
I am booking professional entertainers who are
more upbeat, featuring music from the 70ʹs and
80ʹs. No hard rock or rap. There will be more soft
rock, featuring artists such as Elvis, Neil Diamond,
The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Dean Martin, Frank
Sinatra, and other popular musical artists. It’s
possible we might have some country and
western.
When are you starting the 2018-2019 Season?
There will be no events during the summer
months of June, July, & August.
There will be no event in September, because it is
Labor Day Weekend and the synagogue will be
very busy seing up the extended seating for High
Holy Day services.
When is the COS Seniors Opening Event?
Our opening event will be October 7, 2018. This
is the first Sunday of the month.
This opening event will be our Annual Paid up
Membership Event. For this event, I am bringing
back one of our popular entertainers from last
season.

Education (continued from page 5)
tutoring position on Wednesdays. We said
goodbye and Todah Rabbah to Rachel Lehrman
and Abby Newman as they move on to pursue
their careers outside of Orlando. Other than these
changes, we look forward to our entire staff
returning to their same positions. We are pleased
to be hosting an all synagogue Hebrew school
teachers community-wide workshop on August 12
from 9-12 planned by JTEN, Jewish Teen Educator
Network of the Jewish Federation of Greater
Orlando.
“Meet the teacher” will be August 12 starting with
refreshments at 12:30 and then meet the teacher at
1 p.m. The first day of school is Sunday, August 19
at 9 a.m. Following Hebrew school we will be
celebrating Ohev Shalom’s 100th birthday. The
party will be from 12:30-3 featuring lunch, strolling
entertainment, SAK comedy, cake and ice cream.
There is no charge as it is our way of saying Todah
Rabbah, thank you for helping us to reach this
wonderful milestone.
Another exciting program being planned by JTEN
is a community teen retreat for all Jewish 8th-12th
graders, August 6-7 at Camp Challenge in
Sorrento. The theme is “New Beginnings/Geing
Ready for the New School Year.” The cost is $18
per person. Details are forthcoming.
I am excited to share that as part of our teen
Education program, DDD (Dinner, Daber and
Dvar) will be having an interfaith dialog one
Wednesday a month with teens from the Atlantic
Peace Center. We are also looking to continue our
intergenerational dialog with our friends from
Village on the Green, as well as other formal
learning opportunities for our teens.
We jump right into Shabbaton season September
14-16. We are trying something new and having
our 6th, 7th and 8th grade Shabbaton at one time at
Camp Geneva. There will be space for each grade
to do their own programming to create
community. The camp offers a lot of fun facilities
including swimming, a lake, a gym and lots of
meeting spots.
High Holidays are early this year!! Rosh
Hashanah begins at sundown September 9. We
have programming which includes age
appropriate services and games based on the
theme of the holidays. Programming will be on
the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
starting at 10 a.m. Second day Rosh Hashanah
will be family services. Registration details are
forthcoming.
All three of our youth groups will have their
opening events on August 26!
When you return in August you will see a change
on the first floor of the school. We have replaced
the carpeting with tile!!
I wish you an enjoyable, safe and Jewish summer
and look forward to seeing everyone when the
school and program year begins in August!

Dear Rabbi –
As we approach the High Holidays, I have a serious
moral question: What are the limits of plagiarism? I
mean, sure – if I rip off someone else’s work, that’s a
clear-cut case. But what about things I’ve heard or
read or learned along the way, and have no idea where
they came from? And what if I really think they’re my
own ideas?
- Creative But Ethical
Dear CBE –
In the book that bears her name, Ester tells the
king about the plot against his life “in the name
of Mordekhai”, her uncle who overheard the two
courtiers planning the assassination. The
seemingly minor maer of mentioning the source
of her information sets off a chain of events that
elevates Mordekhai, enrages Haman, endangers
the Jews of Persia, and ends up in the defeat of
Haman and the salvation of the Jews.
The Talmud [Tractate Megillah 16a] cites this as
the proof text for the principle, Kol ha-omeir davar
b’sheim om’ro meivi g’ulah l’olam – “One who
speaks a word in the name of the one who spoke
it brings redemption to the world.”
The Talmud keeps its own counsel, too,
consistently giving the name of the Sage credited
with a particular teaching (“Rabbi X said…”),
and often giving the name of the Sage that Sage
learned it from (“Rabbi X said in the name of
Rabbi Y…”). If there’s a question about the origin
of the teaching, that often gets recorded, too
(“Rabbi X – and some say Rabbi Z – said in the
name of Rabbi Y…”)
So, Judaism is very strong on the point of citing
sources. Not only is this the fair and proper thing
to do – puing credit for an idea where credit is
due – it also helps us understand the fuller
meaning of the teaching. For example, we would
expect that a statement aributed to Hillel would
be consistent with his other teachings. We would
also expect it to be in contrast to a statement on
the same topic by Shammai, who debated Hillel
on just about everything.
Taking credit for other people’s ideas may also
violate the Rabbinic prohibition against g’neivat
da’at – literally, “theft of intellect”, but referring
to misleading or deliberately creating a false
impression. This could include leading others to
believe that someone else’s words are one’s own.
Modern rulings of halakhah [Jewish law] even
include failing to cite secondary sources as
potential g’neivat da’at.
Sometimes, of course, we simply don’t have the
source available to us. The Talmud, which is
based largely on a memorized oral tradition,
addresses this by saying things like “A master
said” or “The Sages taught”.
Even when an idea of our own devising, it’s
considered proper to exercise humility in
expressing it. Traditional Jewish sources
emphasize the teaching of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes)
1:9, Ein hadash tahat ha-shemesh – “There is
nothing new under the sun” – reminding us that
even what seems to be original thinking is based
on what we’ve learned from others in the past.
example, you were to sign up to serve just once
every other month, that would be a total of 6
appearances in the course of an entire year! So
please help out our congregation by assisting us
with this important service for the High Holidays,
for Shabbat, or both!
Men’s Night Out It is never too early to start
planning a hugely popular and successful event.
A tremendous turnout enjoyed the great
entertainment and comradery at Men’s Night Out
2017, and demanded that we do it again. All of
our sponsors are back, some at increased levels of
support. Many thanks to all of them. We already
have lined up Cory Kahaney, a female Jewish
comedian for the event, so we expect good Jewish
humor. But you will have to aend to find out for
yourself. Last year’s aendees certainly were not
disappointed. This year’s event will be held on
Thursday evening, November 8, 2018. Look for
“Save the Date” cards in the mail in the near
future.
A Changing of the Guard As I mentioned in the
last issue, Bart Neuman relinquished his position
as Co-President after six years of tireless service to
our Men’s Club. Bart will continue to offer his
experience and energy to the organization, and we
all look forward to his continued input and
service. We also have a new slate of officers. The
names are the same, but they have been
rearranged. Our guys are all workhorses! Andy
Men’s Club (continued from page 9) Rosen continues in his “official” role as Treasurer
and his unofficial role of taking care of whatever
task has not been covered by anyone else. Also
continuing in his role as our Secretary, a thankless
job, is Jerry Leibman. Of course, Jerry doubles as
the lead man for Ohev’s Seniors auxiliary group.
Vice President Michael Asher has decided to
transfer his tremendous creativity in fashioning
programs to overseeing our publicity. In
particular, he is trying to move our means of
promoting programs into the 21st century. Bruce
Hoffen has taken his successes as our Vice
President of Membership to social action. This is
a natural change for Bruce, who has taken on our
very important Yom Hashoah program (yellow
candles together with an event for the entire
congregation). Desi Rotenberg has moved from
social action to programming, shifting our focus
even more to educational programs. This is in
keeping with younger Jews’ interest in learning
more about what it means to be Jewish. Finally,
working behind the scenes for us once again will
be our continuing at-large board members, Ken
Davis, Richard Schwar@, Michael Soll, Mark
Stone and Jim Tinkoff, and of course Immediate
Past President Bart Neuman. We thank all of you
for your service not only to Men’s Club, but to
our entire congregation.
