LEADERSHIP LEXINGTON ALUMNI | 1979 - 2014

The 2014-15 Class of Leadership Lexington shared a commitment based on a desire to serve the people of Lexington, to connect communitymembers, to promote corporate citizenship, and to make a lasting contribution. Guided by these principles, the Class developed four projectsfor community advancement. Key steps included identifying an area of the community that wants to form partnerships, working with individu-als and groups in that part of the community to identify needs, combining people and talents to provide human and other resources to meetthose needs and documenting the process as a guide for others who wish to serve.

NOURISH YOUR NEIGHBORHOODTeam Members: Megan Moore, Kim Woods, Phillip Sisk, Tish Heaney, Katie Martin, Emily Bradley, Jerry Sturdivant, Brittany MacGregor, KatyBennett, Melynda Jamison, Brant Welch and Toa GreenCommunity hunger relief initiative, partnering with local restaurants to create ways for patrons to donate, turning money into meals in theform of gift cards to family resource centers at neighborhood schools. The group began with a focus on the downtown Lexington area, engaging local restaurants to participate in Nourish Your Neighborhood (NYN) where restaurant patrons have the opportunity to donatemoney (or “buy a meal”) when they dine out. Donations from restaurant patrons are used to purchase restaurant gift cards that are thengiven to local school Resource Centers for students and their families at risk of hunger. It is a primary focus of the group to feed those inneed while also encouraging families to dine together. The group partnered with the school resource centers because they believed that theresource center coordinator would be able to identify the children most in need.

NYN created a logo design, website (www.nourishyourneighborhood.com), and presentation for approaching potential restaurant partners.North Lime Coffee and Donuts was the group’s first partnering restaurant, featuring a NYN Donut in the NYN colors priced above their nor-mal daily donut cost where the additional money is donated to NYN which is turned into gift cards given to their initial partner school,Lexington Traditional Magnet School (LTMS), through the Family Resource Center. Thai and Mighty Noodle Bowls hosted the official Nourish

The group continued the partnership with LTMS and expanded partnerships with JessieClark Middle School to assist families on the South Side of Town as they developed restaurant partners on that side of town. BRIDGING THE GAPGroup members: Wes Harned, Lisa Wilson, Rob Bright, Todd Wetzel, Alex Lyttle, Tyler Campbell, Tyler Hamilton and Tyler ScottBridging the Gap is an initiative to address the area’s skills gap by connecting those that need labor skills to those that needskilled laborers. The goal of the project is to address two significant issues in the Lexington community: (1) the growing skillsgap created by skilled laborers aging out of the work force; and (2) citizens receiving assistance through Lexington’s affordablehousing and homelessness programs (or other underserved demographics) who need to be re-equipped with new skills in a labor or tradethat will enable them to attain sustainable employment. With a focus on connectivity, rather than providing actual job training or temporaryemployment agency services, the group identified contacts within the community that work in skilled labor industries. They also worked toidentify individuals who need meaningful employment. Team members met with Commerce Lexington, the Homebuilders’ Institute ofKentucky, Kentucky Association of Master Contractors, IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors Association), Central Kentucky BuildingInstitute, some local plumbing/pipe fitter unions, and Jubilee Jobs in order to gather information on the extent of the skills gap and to identi-fy businesses looking for employees/trainees. Connections were also made with the Director of Homelessness, Department of AffordableHousing and the Unemployment Office in order to develop a means of identifying individuals that are best fits for being connected withbusiness/sole proprietors looking to provide on-the-job training. The group plans to produce a “white paper” or a written summary of theirfindings, to be presented to the Workforce Development Board or other body best suited to take a long-term interest in the gap they identi-fied and have been working to bridge.

OWN ITGroup members: Anne Hardy , Ben Allen, David Howard, Katy Ross, Sheila Sekela, Jay Inman, Patrick Keal, Brent O’Neill, Caitlin Foehse,Adam Meyer, Michael Hornback, Tony Bonner, Matt Osborne, Michael Cronk, Todd Ernst, Grace Hahn and Alyse Garrard Strengthening neighborhoods by empowering neighbors – Own It is a community beautification project targeting properties with codeoffenses that negatively impact the neighborhood, and that may be due to the inability of owners - especially for owner-occupied properties -to properly maintain the property. The goal of Own It is to serve the populations who currently need assistance, while planning for a sus-tainable model to address the issues long-term. The project team divided into two groups: one to plan and execute a short term awarenessservice project, and the other to prepare and propose a long term solution through partnership with the community and local government.

The short term group worked with the William Wells Brown Neighborhood Association, the office of code enforcement and the local commu-nity resource office of the Lexington Police Department, bringing together neighbors and residents, and community members to understandtheir perspectives and needs. The group’s clean-up day took place on Saturday, April 25th and was attended by members of the community, the 1st district councilman James Brown, and Own It members. The day was also supported by Habitat for Humanity, BluegrassGreensource, Kentucky American Water, Justice House and more. The long term group studied other cities dealing with similar issues, con-ducted a review of vacant properties and properties with code violations, and current policy in Lexington and Fayette County. They partneredwith Jonathan Hollinger in LFUCG’s Department of Planning to develop a program that would assist homeowners of owner-occupied resi-dences with certain repairs that have caused the homeowner to be cited by the Code Department. Group members drafted an ordinance forshifting unused funds from the city’s sidewalk abatement program to aid homeowners with minor home repairs. Representatives of thegroup met with 1st district councilman James Brown to share the draft ordinance, who agreed to bring it to committee in the LFUCG council. The group will continue to support the ordinance as it progresses.

SHADOWING FOR SUCCESSGroup members: Catrena Bowman, Cody Brown, Nick Runyon, Stefan Hendrickson, Mindy Sekhon, Shaye Johnson, Gaby Baca, CindyBrandenburg and Jessica BerryThe group worked to provide information and education to high school students about what it takes to work in a variety of different jobs. The principal of Bryan Station High School recommended they target 25 juniors and partner with an existing co-op class at the school to pro-vide informational pre-employability sessions on topics such as interviewing skills, networking, soft skills, computer skills, and mentoring. The group began meeting with the BSHS students in January 2015. They provided overview of shadowing for success program and informa-tion on Individual Learning Plan (ILP) during the initial meeting. As sessions continued, more topics were covered such as learning styles, job outlook, salaries, education required to enter certain fields, soft skills, professionalism, and proper dress for work, networking, mentor-ing, work ethics, financial aid, and scholarships. After the completion of the in-school, pre-employability sessions, the team toured profes-sional work environments including the Circuit Court, Council of State Governments, KY One Health Hospital and Toyota and the BCTCcampus located on Toyota's Campus.
