M E S S A G E F R O M T H E R A B B I The theme of this year’s dinner, Gateways, expresses both what our Shul stands for and describes the roles our honorees have played in the lives of our kehila. As we gather to celebrate our Shul on the anniversary of the day Jews were restored to governance of the holy city of Yerushalayim for the first time in 2,000 years, we recall that our forefather Yaakov defined the core of Yerushalayim as “the

gateway to heaven.” This is what our shul has merited to be for generations of Jews. As an “embassy” of Yerushalayim, Beth Jacob has provided access to a life devoted to service of Hashem and His children, through prayer, Torah study, and lovingkindness. Our honorees, each in unique ways, exemplify this theme. For 28 years Sybil Goldstein has been a point of contact for hundreds of people. She has served the Shul in a variety of capacities whenever needed, and has fulfilled her mission exquisitely. It has been a privilege to count her as a partner for all these years and I cannot thank her enough for her loyalty to the shul and to its leadership. Moshe and Diane Manheim have been members of our community for four decades. Not only have they absorbed the best of what Beth Jacob has to offer into their lives, they have dutifully served our community in formal and informal ways, and exemplify the grace, openness, and friendship our Shul has been known for, for generations of newcomers to Beth Jacob. Their life trajectory, now pointing them to make aliyah to Eretz Yisrael, testifies to the gateway to things heavenly they have seen in Beth Jacob. Rabbi Shalom Yosef Horowitz brings a special blend of energy, enthusiasm, love, and belief in young people to his leadership of our teen service for dozens of our children. He has transformed our teen service into the gateway to prayer for young people so deperately needed. We are blessed to count him among a staff focused on serving our most precious “merchandise” – our children. May our honorees be blessed for the inspiration they provide us and for their service to our community. May our shul continue to merit to be the gateway to heaven it has been for the last 76 years. Respectfully,

Rabbi Ilan D. Feldman

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T

Dearest Fellow Congregants,

What an honor and pleasure it is to greet all of you this evening as we celebrate our Shul’s 76th year! The renowned solidarity of our community, along with the spiritual, educational, and cultural values we represent and cherish, have long since established our congregation as the benchmark standard of observant Jewish excellence and unity throughout the South.

We are delighted to highlight the dedication and achievements of our honorees, Moshe and Diane Manheim, Sybil Goldstein, and Rabbi Shalom Yosef Horowitz. The Manheims have lived among us for over 35 years, actively pursuing ever-expanding levels of Jewish education and extending a warm welcome to Jews of all backgrounds.

Sybil Goldstein has played a rock-solid role in Shul administration for almost three decades, assisting Rabbi Feldman in all endeavors, working tirelessly in virtually all areas of Shul operations, and supervising and coordinating massive projects. Her planning and coordination skills have played a pivotal role for so many families. Her retirement at the end of this past year is truly a climactic event that marks a tremendously productive career of service and dedication to our entire community.

After a decade of serving as the rabbi of our Teen Minyan, Rabbi Horowitz has demonstrably proven himself to be the warm, focused, and inspiring leader that he truly is. His educational skills and spiritual leadership consistently reach far beyond our Teen Minyan and into the homes of teenagers who need his unique brand of care, humor, and genuine concern for their well-being. Rabbi Horowitz’s ability to reach kids and motivate them has been immensely successful over the years. Our children are in great hands, and our entire community is so deeply appreciative of his tireless efforts and wonderful results.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to these community leaders! May our honorees continue to reap the rewards of their efforts, and may our community continue to grow and shine as a model Torah community for the world.

Mazel tov and yasher koach!

Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim studied in Yeshiva Toras Chaim of Denver, where he began his teaching career while still a student in the yeshiva. After continuing his studies at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood and Ner Israel Kollel in Baltimore, he returned to his alma mater in Denver as a Rebbi for 19 years and then as high school principal for another 18 years. He currently serves as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Kesser Torah in Baltimore, a very successful new high school which he founded two years ago.

He is a passionate and very popular lecturer and is featured on the Torah Communication Network (TCN), where he has recorded over 600 classes to date. Over 500 people call in to listen to his weekly class on the TCN.

In his characteristic self-effacing way, he describes himself as a teacher known for his silly rhymes, corny jokes, and boring lectures.

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF

LT. HADAR GOLDIN

1855 L V R , a , Ga 30329 | 404.633.0551 | . . | @ . |

Hadar Goldin, a Lieutenant in the Givati Brigade of the IDF, was 23 years old when he was killed by Hamas terrorists in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge in 2014 . The terrorists, who took advantage of a humanitarian ceasefire to carry out the attack, kidnapped Hadar’s remains and have held them for almost 5 years, denying his family the closure of providing him with a proper Jewish burial.

After his tragic death, his family discovered Hadar’s well-used copy of the classic Mussar text Mesillas Yesharim (Path of the Just) by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzatto, containing dozens of his personal notes and reflections. These notes, a remarkable personal diary of spiritual growth by one of Israel’s fallen heroes, were published by his family to help understand the great loss of this young soldier and budding scholar. This session will remember Hadar’s life and review some of those notes to elevate Hadar’s neshama as well as those of the thousands of other fallen soldiers and victims of terror remembered during this time.

MOSHE & DIANE MANHEIM

Community Leadership

Since moving to Atlanta in 1984, Moshe and Diane Manheim have become pillars of the Jewish community in so many ways. Jewish education has always been a priority for them as they raised their three children in our community and served in board positions at Yeshiva Atlanta, Torah Day School, and Temima. In addition, they both served on the Beth Jacob Board of Trustees and in other volunteer roles, making a great impact during their years of service. Often looked to as role models of hospitality, the Manheims have hosted many hundreds of guests over the years and have served as a warm and welcoming gateway to connection to our Shul for so many. This summer, after more than three and a half decades in our community, Moshe and Diane will be making Aliya to Israel, writing another chapter in a beautiful and inspirational story of Jewish growth.

SYBIL GOLDSTEIN

professionaL Leadership

Raised in Brooklyn, NY, Sybil moved to Atlanta in 1969. She immediately jumped into Jewish communal work, serving on the boards of various Jewish institutions. Sybil joined the Beth Jacob staff in 1991 as a bookkeeper, and soon after assumed the role of Rabbi’s Secretary to the new Senior Rabbi, Ilan D. Feldman. For the next 28 years, Sybil was a fixture in the Beth Jacob office, serving in virtually every possible administrative role and amassing unsurpassed experience. During critical points in the Shul’s history, such as the monumental Heritage Hall building project, Sybil was the point-person to bring projects to fruition and prepare proper guidelines for using the beautiful new spaces. As the Events Coordinator for many years, Sybil was a gateway for hundreds of families as they went through joyful life cycle events and stood by their side to ensure they had a meaningful experience. After non-stop dedication for 28 years (appropriately, the numerical equivalent in Hebrew for koach, strength), Sybil retired in December 2018 to spend more time with her two adorable grandchildren and pursue various hobbies.

לא עליך המלאכה לגמור, ולא אתה בן חורין להבטל ממנה

He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to

neglect it…..When we arrived in 1984, Atlanta’s nascent observant community was rooted by the wisdom and resolve of Rabbi Emanuel Feldman. We have since been privileged to participate in and benefit from its growth into a Torah community of international note, known for its chesed, leadership and middos - a community that truly strives to serve Hashem with a combination of simcha (joy) and yirat shamayim (fear

of heaven).

Each challenge enriched us and our children and helped us develop a relationship with Hashem that matters, that is real, and that has

ultimately brought us to this next step in our path.

There’s family you are born or marry into, and there’s family you choose. You in this community, fortunately, have become our family. In-laws, out-laws and, of course, so many dear, close friends - you will

forever remain precious to us.

The brilliant quality of this community is directly reflected in the vision of Rabbi and Rebbitzen Feldman who, with the strength of lay leadership, have invested in the schools, Kollels, other shuls, and so many community organizations to create the broad foundation upon which we have all thrived. Our family has benefited beyond the

dreams we dreamt when we arrived.

It is with deepest gratitude that we thank you for accompanying us and supporting us through our lives here in Atlanta.

We sincerely hope to see you in Israel soon,

Rabbi Shalom Yosef Horowitz

Leader, educator, mentor, guide, inspiration. All of these words ring very true, yet to us kids who see what

happens behind the scenes, you are so much more.

Everyone knows Rabbi Horowitz for his skills in educating children, yet few people know just how

much he will do to help children succeed- in and out of the classroom. The amount of energy that is put into each student’s success is incredible; take our word for it, when you leave your child with Rabbi Horowitz, he will be in good hands. (We would know, we’ve been in

his hands for quite a while.)

No one has a conversation with our father without a good laugh and leaving with a smile.

No matter the circumstances, our father is willing to greet every person b’sever panim yafos- with a pleasant,

warm greeting- which sometimes is just what is needed to boost a person’s day.

Thank you for everything. We love you!

Blueprint:[Mishna Avos 1: 6] Yehoshua ben Perachya says, “Make for

yourself a rav and acquire for yourself a chaver (friend)”.

Application:Ten years ago, Rabbi Ilan Feldman offered me the position of leading the Teen Minyan. In the process, I not only acquired a friend, but also became mechubar (attached) to Rabbi Feldman. We share a vision and goal of developing a Teen Minyan where young adults can thrive and grow in a positive

and appropriate Torah-guided environment.

The word “rav” can mean more than Rabbi, it can also mean “more”. I made for myself a Rav who knows a lot more than I do through his life experiences, having learned under great rabbeim and having grown up in the home of greatness. I, together with all the Teen Minyan participants, have been the fortunate recipients of the warm, insightful, and timely guidance and leadership of our Rav. Thank you Rabbi Feldman for taking a chance on me. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for gently pushing me always with authentic feedback and appropriate encouragement. Thank you for sharing these gifts with me so that I was able to share them

with the youth.

Believing. Nudging. Encouraging. = Leadership.Because leaders create leaders.I hope I did not let you down.

May Hashem bless you with many more healthy years of leadership. Thank you Hashem for the opportunity of being

part of the BJ team.

With much admiration, appreciation, love, and respect,

Rabbi S. J. Horowitz

CELEBRATING THE GATEWAYSOF GROWTH AND CONNECTION

Tonight’s honor as leader of the Teen Minyan is a reflection of the dedication of the many teens and adults of Beth Jacob to their own personal growth and to meeting the needs of every individual at

Beth Jacob.

Every teen that enters and participates in the Shabbos teen service makes a difference, and adds to the minyan’s growth and atmosphere. Some teens become leiners and baalei tefilah, while others come at the end of davening for a hug, a smile, and a hot bowl of cholent. For

each of you it is a step forward in your development.

Thank you to the committed adults of the minyan (parents of teens of course) who stepped up to daven or lein when we were short, or to sponsor a kiddush when it was needed (BTW, it’s $60 to sponsor the kiddush - best deal in town. Please see me after the dinner for

sponsorship opportunities).

I thank Hashem that I merit to be part of such a holy minyan with such special people. May you all continue to live your lives as passionate Jews who merit to be inspired and and to inspire others.

With much love, appreciation, and admiration,

Rabbi S. J. Horowitz

It is a privilege to share this evening with such outstanding honorees, Sybil Goldstein, and Moshe & Diane Manheim. Their commitment to Beth Jacob and the greater Atlanta community has been something

that our family has been exposed to since we moved here 13 years ago.

May Hashem bless them in their endeavors with much success and happiness in good health (I will continue to try hold down the

fort at Beth Jacob).

Dear Moshe and Diane,

We first moved to this community around Sukkot when Beth Jacob sold tickets to attend various families’ meals during the Annual Sukkah

Hop. One of our early sets of tickets placed us in your Sukkah. Little did we know, but the tickets were really a two-for-one type of deal. Not only did we enjoy a wonderful meal in your Sukkah, but we also began

a friendship that would span over 30 years!

Through these years with you, we have learned a lot about friendship, spirituality, and humor. Your aliyah will certainly be a loss to Atlanta,

but a great gift to Eretz Yisroel.

With love,

Judy & Jay Kessler
