COMMUNITYCOLLEGES

COMMUNITYCOLLEGES

The origin of community colleges is in the United States. In the US,community colleges, sometimes called junior colleges, technical colleges,two-year colleges, or city colleges, are primarily two-year publicinstitutionsprovidinghighereducationandlower-leveltertiaryeducation,granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees. Many also offercontinuing and adult education. After graduating from a communitycollege, some students transfer to a four-year liberal arts college oruniversityfortwotothreeyearstocompleteabachelor'sdegree.

The termCommunityCollege todayhascometosignify twoyearpubliclyfunded institutions, aimed at educating the local population with thesupport of local tax revenue. ENROLLMENT

In theUnitedStates, community collegesoperateunderapolicyof "openadmission."Thatis, anyonewithahighschooldiplomaorGEDmayattend, regardless of prior academic status or college entrance exam scores.Although community colleges have an open admission policy, studentshavetotakeplacementtestsbeforeenrollingatthecollege, duetonotallcourses being open admission. Under certain circumstances, communitycolleges will also accept high school students or dropouts. These makecommunitycollegesaverysafebet forstudentswhohavebeenunabletocompletetheireducationduetocertainproblems.Communitycollegesareaculturalhubandacatalysttothegrowthofthecommunity.

The open admission policy results in awide range of students attendingcommunity college classes. Cognitiveabilities(i.e.numericalreasoningandspatialreasoningetc.)areimportant characteristics to the successful application of skills in manyoccupations. Psychometric testing can provide key insights into acandidate’sabilitytocommunicate, makedecisionsandcalculatecauseandeffectincertainoccupationalscenarios.

132

Tests are drawn from six main cognitive aptitude types including;Abstract/Conceptual,Verbal,Numerical,Mechanical,SpatialandEmotionalreasoning.

Abstract/conceptualreasoningassessmentsarepsychometrictestswhichfocus primarily on a candidate’s level of fluid intelligence. As such thesetests measure a candidate’s ability to promptly and accurately learncomplex information to aid in problem solving processes. Abstractreasoning tests are culture-fair as questions are presented indiagrammatical form which reduces its emphasis on verbal ability.Verbal reasoning aptitude tests focus on the candidate’s ability toeffectivelypayattentiontoandcommunicatebusinessrelatedconceptsinaverbal form. These tests pay particular attention to candidate’s effectiveuse of written ideas and information to construct accurate conclusions.Numerical reasoning aptitude tests establish a candidate’s ability toperform accurate arithmetic to understand and present conclusionsregarding numerical data. Central themes emphasized is the analysis ofnumericaldatathroughtheinterpretationofgraphsandbasiccalculations.Mechanical reasoning tests identify a candidate’s ability to perceive andunderstandthekineticroleofvisualobjects.Thesemotionandeffecttasksare indicativeof thetechniquesused ineverydayperformanceofrealisticproblemsolvingtasks.Thistesttakesadiagrammaticalformandrequirescandidates to understand the subsequent effects of the configuration ofcertainelements.

Spatialreasoningtestsfocusonacandidate’sabilitytoperceive, constructand deconstruct visual objects within differing contexts. For example,spatialreasoningtestsassesswhethercandidatesareabletomentallyflip,rotateand/orfittogetherobjects.

AptitudeTestAnaptitudeisacomponentofacompetencytodoacertainkindofworkata certain level, which can also be considered "talent". Aptitudes may bephysical ormental. Aptitude is not developed knowledge, understanding, learned or acquired abilities (skills) or attitude. The innate nature ofaptitude is in contrast to achievement, which represents knowledge orabilitythatisgainedthroughlearning.Tests that assess learned skills or knowledge are frequently calledachievement tests. However, certain tests can assess both types ofconstructs. An example that leans both ways is the Armed ServicesVocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which is given to recruits enteringthearmedforcesoftheUnitedStates.AnotheristheSAT,whichisdesignedasa testof aptitude for college in theUnitedStates, buthasachievementelements. For example, it tests mathematical reasoning, which dependsboth on innate mathematical ability and education received inmathematics.Aptitude tests can typicallybegroupedaccording to the typeof cognitiveabilitytheymeasure:1.Fluid intelligence:the ability to think and reason abstractly, effectivelysolve problems and think strategically. It’s more commonly known as‘streetsmarts’or theability to ‘quicklythinkonyour feet’.Anexampleofwhatemployerscanlearnfromyourfluidintelligenceisyoursuitabilityfortheroleforwhichyouareapplying

2.Crystallisedintelligence:theabilitytolearnfrompastexperiencesandtoapplythislearningtowork-relatedsituations.Worksituationsthatrequirecrystallised intelligence include producing and analysingwritten reports, comprehending work instructions, using numbers as a tool to makeeffectivedecisions,etc.Intelligencequotient(I.Q.TEST)An intelligence quotient, or IQ, is a score derived from one of severalstandardizedtestsdesignedtoassesshumanintelligence.ThepsychologistWilliam Stern coined the abbreviation “IQ”. When current IQ tests aredeveloped, themedian raw score of the norming sample is defined as IQ100andscoreseachstandarddeviation(SD)upordownaredefinedas15IQpointsgreaterorless,althoughthiswasnotalwayssohistorical.Bythisdefinition, approximately two-thirds of the population scores between IQ85 and IQ 115, and about 5 percent of the population scores above 125.IQ scores are used for educational placement, assessment of intellectualdisability, and evaluating job applicants. In research contexts they havestudiedaspredictorsofjobperformance, andincome.Theyarealsousedtostudy distributions of psychometric intelligence in populations and thecorrelations between it and other variables. MENTORINGAPPROACHTraditionally, overseas education consultants primarily help with

counselling for foreign education and guide the students through the

applicationprocessfromGrade11onwards.

Asper thispilotapproach,PproEedaims togroomapotential candidate

fromthegrass-rootslevelstartingfromGrade8.Webelievethat,toensure

the average Indian student applicantoffers a competitive application, the

student must be groomed earlier during the educational system. As

Additionally, the mentor would help the student develop specific set of

skills geared towards creating a powerful portfolio of applications,

My initial planning for studying abroadwas not verychaotic since I believe quality of education includingcoursecontent, practicalwork, research, faculty is farsuperior abroad as compared to India. Studyingabroad is a multi-national and multiculturalexperience, which I would not receive in any Indianuniversity.
