Ganga Dussehra : 8th June, 2014

“Whether it's naxalism, separatism orterrorism, a comprehensive integrated actionplan is needed and my ministry has startedwork on it.”

-Rajnath Singh

Ganga Dussehra falls during DashamiTithi of Jyaishta Shukla Paksha and currentlyfalls in month of June. Ganga Dussehra is alsoknown as Gangavataran which means ‘thedescent of the Ganga’. According to Hindureligious texts, the Ganges River originallyflowed only in heaven and was residing inKamandal of Lord Brahma. In the form of agoddess Maa Ganga was brought down toearth by King Bhagiratha in order to purifythe ashes of his ancestors, 60,000 of whomhad been burned under a curse from the greatsage Kapila. The river came down reluctantly, breaking her fall on the head of Shiva so thatshe wouldn’t shatter the Earth. Before comingto the Earth, the Ganga along with her broughtthe purity of heaven to the Earth. By the timeshe reached the Bay of Bengal, she had touchedthe ashes of the 60,000 princes and fertilizedthe entire region.

On Ganga Dussehra devotees worshipGoddess Ganga and take bath in Ganges.Taking bath in Ganges and offering charity orDan-Punya on this day is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that holy dip in Ganges onGanga Dussehra day can purge all type of sins.

Devotees flock to Allahabad/Prayag, Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi totake a holy dip. Ganga Dussehra celebrations are legendary in Varanasi. On Ganga Dussehra daythousands of devotees do Ganga Snan and participate in Ganga Aarti at Dasaswamedh Ghat. Thosewho live far away from the Ganges immerse themselves in whatever river, pond, or sea they can getto on this day. Usually Ganga Dusshra is celebrated one day before Nirjala Ekadashi but in someyears Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi might fall on the same day. Ganga Dussehra shouldnot be confused with Ganga Jayanti when the Goddess Ganga was reborn.

rial..

.Democracy has been saved. India has been freed from Congress rule. Country

has been freed from the clutches of a family. Mature democracy has delivereda mature mandate. In the message that mandate has sent it is clear that people

think about the country. People starting to think about the country are a very goodindication. The people after thinking, understanding, seeing, examining and testinghave handed majority to Bharatiya Janata Party and Shri Narendra Modi. History hasbeen created. A day like this had not come in the journey from ‘deepak’ to ‘kamal’.People have ushered in good days for nationalistic ideology. Good days have comefor the country. It is in the mind of the people. People want to see good days.

Nation has shown such a democratic affection to BJP for the first time. In thiselection all India expansion of BJP has taken place. Coalition experiment has also beena huge success. Nation has not left any room for BJP to say that enough strength hasnot been given to it. Nation has given enough opportunities to BJP.

The present time is full of challenge. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has notwasted a single minute after taking oath. He has also cautioned the members of hisministry. He has made them aware of the expectations of the people. People haveaccepted the political acumen and diplomatic skills of the Prime Minister on the veryfirst day of oath ceremony itself. This message of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modihas gone to the entire world. In which direction will he work has been made amplyclear by his initiative. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gifted a shawl for the motherof Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shri Nawaz Sharif. After that Shri Nawaz Sharif presenteda sari for Shri Modi’s mother from Pakistan. Here the issue is not about ‘shawl’ or ‘sari’but about mother and this cannot be done by anyone else. Remembering mother beforeinitiating a discussion about motherland is an Indian tradition and by initiating itPrime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gave a hint about his culture. To keep in mindabout maintaining good relations with neighbouring countries and to show that Indiais capable of leading its neighbouring countries is not easy.

World has accepted good beginning with SAARC countries as unique initiative.A light of hope has been ignited in the heart of the people with the coming of Prime

Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Modi government will have to come upto the expectationsof the people. While cautioning about many things Shri Modi has asked his ministersto pay attention to work culture. He has asked them to work more. Ministry has startedits work on expected lines.

Nation is standing on the heap of problems. But there is no problem of whichsolution cannot be found. Even after 67 years of independence India has not been ableto reach where it should have been by now.

India’s hope has been awakened. The number of people thinking about nation hasincreased. Whether it is the issue related to defence deals, borders of the country, issuesrelated to Jammu & Kashmir, China or about our internal security, our governmentshave not paid attention to them in past.

In a country, problems will be there but honest attempts should be made to findsolutions to these problems. Today many problems like unemployment, starvation, price rise, corruption, black money are before the nation. To find solution to theseproblems honest efforts should be made which has not been done till now.

We know that problems continuing for many years cannot be solved in a single

Clear mandate means time to fulfillthe aspirations of the people

day but if the direction of efforts remains correct, people will accept it. People have now started to saythat the days of honest efforts have come.

Mundeji was a messiah of farmers and poorThe death of senior BJP leader of Maharashtra and cabinet minister Shri Gopinath Munde is a big blow

to both organization and the government. Mundeji had started his political career from Mahrashtra from the‘diya’ of Janasangh. He was connected to the grassroots and a symbol of struggle. He had started party workfrom far flung villages. The untimely demise of Mundeji who had become an identity of Marathwada hasshocked the nation. From zila panchayat to rural development minister, he was MLA for five times. He wasDeputy Chief Minsiter in the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra. He was a popular leaderamong the dalits and OBCs. He was popularly called as ‘Saheb’.

Gopinath ji Munde not only left the people of Maharashtra including Marathawada leaderless but alsoan organization like BJP. Mass leaders are not made in one day. He was able to reach to the top due tocontinuous work and struggle of forty years. The popularity of Gopinath Munde who was placed among thetop leaders can be gauged from the massive gathering in his funeral.

The elections in Maharashtra are close. Party was preparing for the elections under his leadership butsomething else was in the destiny. He was the backbone of the Mahrashtra BJP. It is true that with the demiseof Mundeji that backbone is gone. As Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha he had started to build his all Indiaimage gradually. In the country and particularly in Maharashtra he became famous as Shetkari (farmer)leader of the poor. He fought for the rights of farmers and poor throughout his life. He was considered a boldleader in Maharashtra politics. He had the habit to speak his mind openly. He had family relations with LateBala Saheb Thakre for years. He worked wonderfully as the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtralegislative assembly. He lived for the people from the beginning till the end of his life and gave away his lifefor the cause of the people. The day he died in the road accident in Delhi he was going to his parliamentaryconstituency Beed to attend a felicitation programme. But destiny had some other plans. The place where hewas to be felicitated, his last rites were performed the very next day. The divine will is beyond anyone’scomprehension. Therefore we bow our head to accept this divine will and pray to the almighty to give a massleader like him proper place in his feet.

Invitations to SAARC leaders is an impressive diplomatic start

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handing out invitations to the heads of the South Asian Associationfor Regional Cooperation nations to be part of his swearing-in was a impressive diplomatic start withneighbours. It was the first time a Prime Minister had invited SAARC nations‘ head in his swearing-inceremony . It also reflects PM Narendra Modi’s wish for making SAARC an important group which caninfluence international politics impressively.

A former diplomat, reacting on this unique initiative of Narendra Modi, said, “Modi has managedto send across a very strong message by inviting the leaders of SAARC nations. Regarding Pakistan, onemust not view this case in isolation since it is also part of SAARC. Modi has only extended his electionslogan, ‘Sab ka saath, sab ka vikaas’, to the rest of the SAARC nations,”

“He has put new life into an organisation such as SAARC and has conveyed the message that all SAARCnations need to develop, survive and prosper together. Many have tried and painted Shri Modi in a negativemanner. He was no doubt aggressive during his campaign, which was needed to effectively throw out anexisting party which had been ruling since the past 10 years. The invitation to SAARC nations was amasterstroke, because in one go, he sent a message of how there is a need to develop and prosper togetherfor the entire region.”

On invitation of SAARC nations External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj said that Modi’sinvitation to the leaders of the eight-member bloc ceremony is indicative of the government’s intent andcommitment to build cordial, friendly and inclusive ties with the countries of South Asia.

“The Prime Minister has a vision for friendly cooperation with each of the SAARC countries. Thisinvitation was the first step towards realising this vision. “A promising beginning has been made at thestart of the new government in our engagement with each of these countries,” she said.

Delhi BJP Presidents Shri VijayGoel and Shri Vijender Gupta, former Delhi Mayor Ms ArtiMehra and the newly electedMPs from Delhi accompaniedhim. After that Shri Modi directlydrove to Krishna Menon Margresidence of former PrimeMinister Shri Atal BihariVajpayee to seek his blessings.

All elected Lok Sabha membersfrom Delhi along with other BJPsenior leaders were also presentwhen he paid his visit.

With Shri Narendra Modi atthe helm of affairs, a new era hasstarted for the nation and BJPthat for decades struggled tounite the nation under thebanner of cultural nationalism

and fought against the policy ofappeasement of pseudosecularists. The passion withwhich the BJP Karyakartascelebrated Shri Modi’s swearing-in across the nation clearlyshows that the party is gearedup to be a perfect bridge betweenthe aspirations of the people andthe Government.

Indian Newspapers write...Media in India see the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister

Shri Narendra Modi as the opening of a new chapter in IndianDemocracy. In its front story The Times of India says, “Dawn of anew era”, while The Asian Age runs a similar headline: “Indiabegins Modi era”.

An article on the Firstpost website argues that the election thatbrought the Principal Opposition BJP to power “was not just a slapin the face of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty” but also a “completerejection of their socialistic welfare economy “.

The Times of India agrees that half a century later, “Nehruvianformulas which emphasize big government can become outmoded inIndia”. Recalling the new PM’s promise of “minimum government, maximum governance”, it points out that Shri Modi, as captain, hasbeen given the opportunity to run a tight ship”. “He must utilize thisopportunity to the fullest” says the paper.

“Now that Shri Narendra Modi has assumed charge as thecountry’s Prime Minister, backed by a massive mandate, he mustbegin and hasten the process of change which he has promised,”insists The Pioneer in an editorial entitled “With core team in place,he must get cracking”.

Newspapers are saying that the new cabinet which took oathhas the clear “imprint” of Shri Modi. They point out that the 45 otherministers sworn in along with him are significantly fewer than the70-plus ministers in the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA)government. “By dramatically whittling down his council of ministersto 45 from 70 in the outgoing UPA government, Shri Modi has sentout an unmistakable signal that his administration is going to bedifferent,” The Times of India says.

The Indian Express is also of the opinion that “this appears tobe a purposeful cabinet streamlined for efficiency”.

According to The Business Standard, the new Prime Ministerhas done a “fine balancing act to give representation to variousregions and caste groups”.

The Times of India, meanwhile, welcomes the number of womenministers who were sworn-in. Seven out of the 45 ministers arewomen, with six of them in senior cabinet posts, reports the daily.“Women may only account for 11% of all Lok Sabha (lower house ofthe parliament) MPs but they fared better when it came torepresentation in the cabinet… accounting for 25%,” the paper writes.

And finally, Shri Modi’ supporters and BJP activists celebratedacross the country after he officially signed in as the 15th primeminister of India. In Delhi, sweets were distributed as people watchedthe oath-taking ceremony on TV screens installed across the city, TheTimes of India reports.

The holy city of Varanasi, from where Shri Narendra Modi wonelections with a huge margin, was also in a festive mood, the paperadds. “There is no end of celebrations in this holy city… the city onceagain indulged in festive mood,” exclaims the daily.

assuming a high profile. Even beforehe was sworn in as Prime Ministerhe had already marked a geo-political first with Twitter Diplomacyas prominent Heads of State andHeads of Government greeted himon Twitter. Re-aligning our partnershipswith key neighbours is of vitalimportance. With the change ofregime, the Sri Lankans are alreadyexpecting a jump in their exportsand trade with India to go up by2015. That India and Sri Lankaare set to enjoy more strengthenedrelationship has been affirmed bythe piece of news that PM ShriNarendra Modi is quite likely tochoose Sri Lanka to make his foreignvisit.

At the swearing–in ceremonyChina was conspicuous by itsabsence where not even a highranking representative of thecountry was present. The reasonfor the absence of any Chineserepresentative may have more to

do with the presence of LobsangSangay, Prime Minister of theCentral Tibetan Administration inDharamsala, the TibetanGovernment in exile, as stated areport in the Watch China Times. While China’s reaction to India’sPM may have been ‘chilly’ as thereport describes, the newly elected

The last week for many ofus was a historic one. Thecelebration of the BJP-

NDA electoral victory was stillon. The swearing in ceremony ofthe Prime Minister and hisCouncil of Ministers became amemorable event. The presenceof the SAARC leaders at theswearing in was itself astatement. The distribution ofresponsibility to the Ministershowever brought the realization

of what lay ahead of us. For me,the last week evolved fromcelebration to a challenge. Giventhe responsibility of two majorministries, distribution of time tocover up the backlog of pendingissues on account of code ofconduct was paramount. Myimmediate challenge of course isthe state of economy whichstares at all of us.

We have inherited aneconomy whose GDP has grownby sub 5% for two years in a row.Mining and quarrying sectorshave gained a negative growthtrend. The manufacturing sectorhas had an abysmal performancelast year. The investment cyclehas been disturbed. The negativesentiment has affected trade, hotels and transportation sectors

which are posed for a slowergrowth compared to last year. Asper the CSO estimates, releasedin May, the inflation continuesto be rising with April figure at8.9%. The slow-down ineconomic growth coupled withhigh inflationary pressure posesa challenge to the macroeconomic environment. Taxcollections are at 10.1% of theGDP compared to the initialbudget estimates of 10.9%.

India can ill afford thistrend. This has serious socialconsequences since slow downcomes with a decade of jobless

growth. Reviving the growthmomentum, containing inflationand altering the pattern ofgrowth to gainful employmentis today an overriding priority. There is a need to boost domesticlow-cost manufacturing andhasten the pace of reforms. Pricestability and growth are inter-

twined but may require adifferent strategy.

The victory of NDA and thesignificant electoral setback tothe Congress was on account ofthe reflection of two differentelectoral attitudes. There was ahigh level of dissatisfaction withthe previous government. Therewas hope in the BJP/NDA ledby Shri Narendra Modi It is thishope which commands us to pullthe country out of the presenteconomic situation. This willinvolve fiscal rectitude ascombination of monetary andfiscal policy. Slower GDP growthwill imply lower tax buoyancyand higher fiscal deficit. We mustmove towards an era of fiscaldiscipline where we can reducethe fiscal deficit, contain inflationand improve upon our growthrates. India must prepare itselffor this. We must commitourselves to this discipline sothat in order to strengthen the

Indian economy which canimprove the quality of life of everyIndian and pull out the deprivedones from the state of poverty.Short term disciplining till wereverse the present trend will giveus long term benefits.

The real nature of anindividual (and also of anorganisation) shows only

in a crushing defeat or a completevictory. The heat and humiliationof a total loss melts the façade ofcalm, composure and civility, usual under normalcircumstances. A serious setbackbrings to fore the latentinsecurities and hiddenweakness in personality andexposes the ‘real’ substance of aperson.

An absolute triumph, on theother hand, generally goes tohead, unleashes raw desires, prejudices, and covert traits andunrevealed idiosyncrasies. Thepretence falls and the realpersona and character of thewinner emerges. In short, in bothsituations (of total loss andcomplete victory) the cover-up isblown off, thus baring the‘genuine’ man behind the mask. With time, the veneer, however, may get resurrected.

During the last few days, thenation has had a glimpse of thislosing/winning syndrome in thewake of the Lok Sabha election. In the din of election campaign,Mr Narendra Modi wasaggressive and non-sparing inhis criticism of his opponents. This was to suit the occasion. But the astounding victorybrought out the real Modi —humble, emotional andreverential to his elders — and

deferential to institutions he hasto work with and which are thebedrock of our Republic.

Mr Modi’s gestures, following an unprecedented win— touching veteran BJP leaderLK Advani’s feet, escorting andholding by hand the estrangedand aged once senior BJP leaderKeshubhai Patel inGandhinagar, hugging his arch-rival Shankersinh Vaghela, andabove all, bowing and touchingthe entry point of ParliamentHouse with his forehead, haveleft an indelible mark on all thosewho were glued to televisionscreens. It will be etched inpublic memory for a long time tocome. His obeisance to theinstitution of Parliamentmatched his fervour for ‘MotherGanga’.

In contrast, the Congressand its leadership (mother-and-son duo) were defiant andconceited. They took almost aweek to congratulate the winner, did not own up the mosthumiliating defeat the party hassuffered since independence, and have since been looking forscapegoats. Those loyal to thePalace are busy finding faultwith the leadership of MrManmohan Singh, his allegedfailure to communicate the‘achievements’ of the UPAregime to the public and hissilence during the campaign.

Could there be a better

example of deception? Mr Singhwas ensconced in the PMO, withthe seniority and experience ofMr Pranab Mukherjee ignored, precisely for those very reasons.Mr Singh was self-effacing,lacked both political stature andleadership experience, and hadno potential to emerge as a massleader. For the Nehru-Gandhis,he was thus tailor-made for thejob.

It’s a settled fact that the UPAGovernment was run by themother-son duo and theirfaceless cronies. Mr Singh was afigurehead and a mask behindwhich the Nehru-Gandhi cabalmanipulated the system. NeitherMr Singh was supposed to, nordid he ever try to, disturb thisarrangement. He held the PrimeMinister’s office and the Gandhi-clan exercised power, at timesdirectly or through dubiousconduits.

Mr Singh’s job was to keepthe seat warm till the Gandhiscion was ready to take over. Nowonder, in the entire Lok Sabhaelection campaign, Mr Singh didnot figure at all. Mr RahulGandhi was the UPA’s mascotall the way. All the UPA’s‘initiatives and achievements’were attributed to him.

What explains theCongress’s decimation in thesepolls? Apart from massivecorruption, economic mess andabsence of governance, the

communal politics of theCongress and its ‘secular’ alliesalso contributed to its collapse.

With Indira Gandhi’suntimely death, her son RajivGandhi inherited her mantle, even though at that time too therewere many leaders with decadesof experience and service to theCongress. He continued theconspiracy to create a communaldivision and project his party asthe champion of each

community separately. It was Rajiv Gandhi who

sought to upstage the Hinduseers and leaders on theRamjanmabhoomi issue by hisfarce of opening the lockeddoors. Then, to get the alertedMuslim leadership with him, hewent whole hog with the Muslimorthodoxy on the Shah Banoissue and amended the law todeny Muslim wives the benefitsthat the Supreme Court in itsjudgement had decreed must bepaid on divorce.

What the reactionaryresponse of Rajiv Gandhi on theShah Bano case did to theMuslim community was to sowthe seeds of Islamist extremist

orthodoxy and fuel terror as anecessary weapon for the so-called protection of the perceivedtraditions of the community. Itstarted sinking into Hindus andsecular Muslims and Christiansthat fundamentalist Muslimswere beyond the pale of law. Ina way, it was a repeat of whathad happened in Punjab whereJarnail Singh Bhindranwalegave legitimacy on grounds ofreligion to the dangerous

slogan of extremism and putthe moderate Akalis on theblock for not being extremistenough.

As in the case of Punjab, thebreak from Indian politicsfollowing the liberal traditionbegan with the consequences ofRajiv Gandhi’s mishandling ofthe Shah Bano case. Extremistorthodoxy was enshrined as apartner in the power structure. Not only were the liberals amongthe Muslims cornered, but theorthodox elements also beganquestioning their very religiousbeliefs.

At one level, Muslimpoliticians like Arif MohammedKhan were forced to quit

positions in the Congressleadership and the Government. At another level, the most rabidcommunal forces got theopportunity to be arbiters ofwhether a practising Muslimwas truly a follower of Islam ornot.

The Congress’s intent onappeasement failed to see thatits so-called ‘15-pointprogramme’ to benefit theMuslims was having no effect, nor was it enthusing thecommunity leadership. Like theCongress with its ‘Garibi hatao’programme that trapped thepoor in a cesspool ofbackwardness, the Muslimleadership wanted thecommunity to be locked up in itsrejection of modernity.

On May 16, the countryindicated its determination toclimb out of this trap. Thewelcome to the ascendancy of theNarendra Modi-led BJP cutacross communities. Thisaspirational fever had begun totransform the Muslim youth too.Muslim-dominated districts inseveral States were uniformly infavour of Mr Modi and BJPcandidates.

The Congress and the so-called secular parties have beenseen by people for what they are— rank communalistspromoting Islamistfundamentalism in the name ofsecularism. Will the Congressand its leadership be honest toown their mistakes, introspectand reformulate the politics? Nosuch hope! The party and theNehru-Gandhis were conceitedin power; they are graceless indefeat.

TMC intensify attacks on BJP supporters inBengal, many flee homes

The ruling TMC mounted more attacks on the BJP workers, this timeransacking their houses and firing at them at Jamuria in Burdwan district. As per media reports similar attacks also took place at Toofanganj inCoochbehar district in far off North Bengal. Jamuria falls under Asansolparliamentary constituency from where BJP’s Babul Supriyo won in thegeneral elections defeating TMC’s labour leader Dola Sen by more than70,000 votes. The attacks seemed to come as the ruling outfit’s responseto the voters’ decision to support Supriyo. Bullets were recovered from thespot sources said adding the BJP workers’ houses were shattered as “wehad worked in the elections for the BJP.” A number of villagers had fledtheir houses fearing more such attacks. “The Trinamool is running aGovernment of terror in Bengal and there is a need for all the like-mindedpeople to come together to combat this situation” the local BJP MP whohad a couple of days ago helped a number of villagers return home said.Similar attacks took place at Toofanganj in Coochbehar district of NorthBengal where some BJP workers were punished by Trinamool men whothrew hot, boiling oil at them for daring to work for the BJP during thepolls. TELANGANA

Telangana came into existence asIndia’s 29th state

On June 2, 2014 India’s 29th state was born. For the first time outside the Hindi- and

Bengali-speaking areas — two states speaking thesame language have been created.

Here are 15 watershed moments thatcontributed to the recognition of Telangana as aseparate state

1953: States Reorganization Committeeadvises against the immediate merger

of Telangana with AndhraPradesh.

November 25, 1955:Andhra assembly

passes resolutionto providesafeguards to

Telangana.November 1, 1956:

Telangana merged with theAndhra state to form Andhra

Pradesh.1968-69: Massive revolt called Jai Telangana

Movement launched by people in Telanganademanding a separate state.

January 1969: As conciliatory measure, theAll-Party State Accord was signed. Indira Gandhialso announced packages for the region, styled aneight-point formula and a five-point formula. Courtupholds the rule of job and educational quotas forTelangana. Then, the anti-Telangana stir waslaunched — the Jai Andhra Movement. It isimportant to note here that, Venkaiah Naidu andChandrababu Naidu were in the forefront of theJai Andhra stir. The Centre, posts the stir, yieldedand nullified almost all the safeguards that hadbeen put in place.

1969-2000: During this period, various protestswere organized by agitators — both pro- and anti-Telangana — which often took a bloody turn. BJPsupported the movement and participated activelyfor the creation of Telangana.

2001: In this year, KCR picked up the statehoodfor Telangana demand. He also walked out of

Telegu Desam Party and launched the TelanganaRashtra Samithi.

2004: Congress and TRS enter into a pollalliance and Congress promised a separateTelangana in the elections.

2006: Congress and TRS part ways when thedemand for the separate state of Telangana is notmet.

December 2009: UPA-II’s Home Ministerhints at the fact that the Centre is serious about therecognition of Telangana as a separate state. Inthis regard, the Srikrishna Committee is set upwhich had submitted its report in 2010.

December 2012: Home Minister announcesthat the decision regarding Telangana will be takenin a month.

July 30, 2013: The UPA government supportedby the opposition BJP announced the formation ofthe separate state of Telangana.

The creation of the separate state of Telangana, after a mammoth struggle that spanned close to 60years, also witnessed horrific incidents of violencethroughout the once unified state of AndhraPradesh. In 2010, it was reported that 73 studentshad committed suicide and 1,812 studentsattempted to take their own lives demanding thata separate state of Telangana be created.

Narendra Modi greetsthe people of Telangana

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi hasgreeted the people of Telangana and congratulatedthe state’s first Chief Minister, Shri K.Chandrasekhar Rao, on the creation of the newstate. The Prime Minister has tweeted as follows:

“India gets a new state! We welcomeTelangana as our 29th state. Telangana will addstrength to our development journey in the comingyears.

Emotions Cause Disease:Emotions like anger, greed and

hurry are potent sources of disease.Desire produces anger. Anger resultsin infatuation; both have their origin inRajas (Gita). The senses, mind andintellect are the seats for theseemotions. Therefore one shoulddevelop control over these emotionswhich are the worst enemies of man.Otherwise, all material and spiritualknowledge will be useless—JnanaVijnana Nashanam. In Ayurvedaprevention of disease is effected throughstrict discipline of man to develop self-control. Ayurveda teaches not onlyhow to live a happy life, but also howto die a happy death with detachment, contentment and peace.

Ayurveda advocates VarnashramaDharma, a system of organisation ofthe whole human life into definite self-adjusting socio-economic units, so that, all people may be happy without anystrife for selfish ends and may reachthe supreme goal of spiritualprogress—Paramaartha. Every man hasto strive his best for the full attainmentof the four values or aspirations of lifenamely, Dharma—Virtue or duty toself and society, Artha—acquisition ofwealth or power, Kama—satisfactionof desires and Moksha—liberation fromthe bondage or attachment. Life hasthus the great purpose of progressivespiritual evolution. I have great respectfor the truly scientific research worker, untouched by commercial interests. But, I shudder to think, that a third-rate practitioner of Modern Medicinespreads into the villages of India, toreplace the ennobling system ofAyurveda by materialistic andoutlandish ideas quite unsuitable to ourhabits. It is the spirit of Ayurveda thatsaves the Indian civilisation.

Diagnosis: The physician shoulddevelop an inquisitive outlook towardsthe less obvious signs of ill-health so asto warn the patients from getting ill.The causes of diseases are beautifully

summarized in Ayurveda into 3 groups, viz., 1. Unsuitable use of the senses—Asaalmya Indriyaartha Samyoga, 2.Faulty judgement—PrajnaaAparaadha and 3. The effects of time—Parinaama. Research should beconducted on the incidence of theseasons (Ritus) in India and theirinfluence on the onset of diseases andof the pharmacological properties(Rasa, Guna, etc.) of food-materials and

drugs. Today, the methods ofinvestigation of diseases are lop-sidedgiving no real attention to the man asa whole. The physician who dependstoo much on instruments andlaboratories is unable to develop themost valuable faculty of intuition.Charaka says: “A physician who cannotenter into the innermost soul of thepatient with the bright light of the lampof his own knowledge cannotsuccessfully treat any disease.”(Charaka Vimana IV-14)

Methods of Research: We shouldconduct research in Ayurveda in orderto make it the best system of treatmentin the world. As the word Ayurvedaimplies, it is the Science of Life. It hasno limitation of race, climate or country. Its door is open to all true knowledgefrom any source. The application ofModern Methods of Pharmacologicaltechnique conducted in collaborationwith experienced Ayurvedic scholarsis sure to result in the advancement of

both Ayurveda and Modern Medicine.Literally, pharmacological, biochemical, clinical, psychological andphilosophical research should all beconducted side by side.

The methods of research inAyurveda should not be to imitate whatis done in other countries. The researchshould be based upon the fundamentalsassumed by Ayurveda. Ayurveda hasa good working hypothesis which hashelped the successful practice ofAyurveda through the centuries and itis still a living force today with theAyurvedic physician and the patient. The Siddha and Unani systems alsofollow the same fundamental principlesand are popular with certain sectionsof the people.

Conclusion: Herein, I have laidemphasis on four points which arefundamental to the study of Ayurveda.· Ayurveda is superior to modern

science in some respects and canincorporate all the advances ofModern Science, but ModernScience, cannot adopt all thatAyurveda teaches, unless itaccepts the existence of the soulin man as the Director of theseveral processes of life.

· Man is not to be treated asmachine. The factor of personalityis greatly responsible for thehappiness or misery of theindividual.

· Modern Medicine should not beextended into the villages, unlessit is integrated with Ayurveda byadopting its basic principles ofself-control to prevent disease

· Research in Ayurveda should beconducted by adequate personalof the right type, proficient inAyurveda, with the co-operationof modern Scientists. The scope of Ayurveda is endless.
