Tenali Raman in Emperor Babur’s Court

Once, Tenali Raman was invited to Emperor Babur’s court.

When Tenali had reached his capital, Babur told his courtiers, “Tenali Raman is very intelligent, and

he can make everyone laugh. But, no one in this court must laugh at his jokes. Let’s see what he does

then”.

When Tenali reached the royal court, he made many amusing remarks. But, no one even smiled. For

fifteen days, Tenali tried to make people laugh, in vain. He realized that something was not right.

Tenali thought, “I must follow Emperor Babur to see where he goes every day.”

Soon, he found out that Babur went for a walk every morning, along with his minister. The minister

carried bags of gold coins, which he gave to the needy, on the Emperor’s orders.

One day, Tenali disguised himself as an old man, with a spade and a mango sapling in hand. He

stood on the bank of river Yamuna, where Babur passed daily during the course of his stroll. When

Tenali spotted babur approaching with his minister, he began digging the ground. Babur was

surprised to see an old man planting a mango sapling.

Babur came to Tenali and asked, “What are you doing?

Surely, when his sapling bears fruit, you won’t be alive.

So, what would you gain?”

Tenali replied, “Your Majesty, I enjoy the fruits of

the trees planted by my father. Similarly this tree will

bear fruits for those who live after me”.

Babur said, “That’ s a noble thought! Take these coins and plant more trees.” The minister gave the

old man a bag of gold coins.

Tenali said, “Than you, Your Majesty. You have given me the fruit of planting this sapling,

even before it has grown into a tree.”

Babur was pleased. He said, “Well done, again. Take this second bag of gold coins.”

Tenali said, “A tree gives fruit once a year, but I am getting the fruit of my labour twice,Your

majesty!”

Babur said appreciatively, “Bravo! This third bag of gold coins is also yours.”

Wealth to this wise old man.” Babur smiled and turned to leave.

Now, Tenali revealed himself.

Seeing that he was duped by Tenali, Babur burst out laughing. “You deserve the rewards, Tenali

Rama! You are as intelligent and wise as people say you are,” said Babur.
