WELCOME TO THE HUNTS 2022 BROCHURE

Welcome to our 92nd edition of Hunts Coaches annual holiday brochure. This year it has just the right number of old favourites and a gem filled mix of new destinations to create treasured travel memories.

Door to Door service is included on our holidays 2+ nights from a wide Lincolnshire catchment area

Over the last year times have been tough for many of us, so escaping the everyday and taking time to enjoy ourselves has never been more important. We all want to be able to enjoy the present and look back fondly on great holidays. We feel blessed that so many of you choose to do this with our Lincolnshire family business.

Over the last 18 months the team have worked tirelessly, following all the guidelines, and making changes to further

enhance our customers and staff’s safety. Many positive changes will continue. For example, the purifying air filters will remain on vehicles, there will be hand sanitisers for you to use and the enhanced cleaning practices including driver’s specialist training on how to deep clean vehicles will remain. This brochure is full of useful information and will guide you through booking your perfect trip away.

As a 3rd generation family business, we are proud of the level of personal service we offer our customers. From the moment you book your holiday, to when

you say goodbye to our driver at the end of your holiday, our number one concern is your satisfaction. We know how important your holiday is to you and we continually strive to ensure that wherever you go and for however long, you have an enjoyable break.

We look forward to welcoming you onboard and would like to thank our existing customers for the continued and valued support. It is because of you that we have stood the test of time for 92 years, serving your travel needs.

We’re Good to Go!

DOOR TO DOOR TRANSPORT SERVICE

Your holiday quite literally begins at your doorstep. We will use a mixture of our own vehicles and taxi services to pick you up and take you to meet the coach. If you live outside the main pick up area, please give us a call, we will do our best to arrange transport for you (This may incur a small surcharge). Transport from your home within our large catchment area is included in all of our brochured tours, except overnight stays which offer a selection of pick up points. We appreciate that Lincolnshire is a large rural County therefore we understand that some of our passengers rely on this service and would not be able to travel without it. However we also appreciate some passengers who have their own transport may not wish to take a less direct route. We have a large free car park at our Alford depot where we are happy for you to leave your car for the duration of your tour.

SUNDAY - We can’t visit the area without taking a trip to Knebworth House and Gardens. The romantic exterior of Knebworth House with its turrets, domes and gargoyles silhouetted against the sky does little to prepare you for what to expect inside. The House has stood for many years, longer than the Victorian decoration suggests; the stucco hides from view a red brick house dating back to Tudor times. Knebworth House first achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of novelist, playwright and politician Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton; author of the words “it was a dark and stormy night” and “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Other notable family members include Lady Constance Lytton, Hertfordshire’s own Suffragette and the Edwardian architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married into the Lytton family. Every generation of the Lytton family has left something of its style and taste; making Knebworth an extraordinary walk through 500 years of British history. Stories and heirlooms reflect the family’s contribution to literature, politics and foreign service; alongside visits by characters as diverse as Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and Noel Gallagher.

MONDAY - We travel home today with a stop in the Cathedral City of Cambridge on the way.

From glorious snow-smothered landscapes to enchanting native wildlife, you’ll encounter Northern Norway’s wonders at their most dramatic in just eight nights after departing the northerly port of Newcastle. This winter adventure will be full of unforgettable experiences, with chances to witness the astounding Aurora Borealis the icing on the cake. When darkness descends, you might be lucky enough to see Mother Nature’s spectacular Northern Lights illuminating the night sky with dancing ribbons of colour as you breathe in the Arctic’s cool, crisp air, all whilst wrapped up warm out on Balmoral’s classic open decks.

There are many magical memories to create during time ashore too. You could uncover a wonderland of wintry scenes on an exhilarating husky ride, with a chance to ‘take the reins’ as a Musher and experience the thrill of guiding your team into the unspoilt wilderness, during a visit to Tromsø. At Bodø, situated on the beautiful Kystriksveien Coastal Route, immerse yourself in the town’s rugged scenery and fishing heritage, and listen out for soaring Sea Eagles overhead; and perhaps head to the top of Mount Aksla in Ålesund, for postcard-perfect panoramas. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, you’ll get to marvel at the magnificence of the unique Torghatten ‘mountain with a hole’ and striking Seven Sisters from the comfort of your smaller ship too.

Carrying up to 1,350 guests your ship is small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you.

Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

The Balmoral

TUESDAY 15TH MARCH After your pick up from your doorstep we travel to Newcastle to meet the ship. Your friendly driver will arrange comfort stops on the way. Your cases will appear outside your room within 5 hours of boarding which gives you plenty of time to explore and plan your activities for the trip.

WEDNESDAY 16TH MARCH - At sea

THURSDAY 17TH MARCH - Ålesund, Norway Ålesund is Norway’s popular, art-nouveau epic of towers and turrets, ornaments and balconies, steeples and spires. The city’s delightful pedestrianised streets offer a diverse mix of art galleries, shops and lively cafés and lead to the 418 steps that climb Mount Aksla. The Fjellstua restaurant and café at the summit is the perfect place to sit and soak up panoramic views of this attractive city, the archipelago, and the Sunnmore Alps.

FRIDAY 18TH MARCH - At sea

SATURDAY 19TH MARCH - Tromsø, Norway The island city of Tromsø is one of northern Norway’s true delights. Rich with neo-classical architecture, the city known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ contains the largest number of wooden houses in Northern Norway, and its old world charm makes it a joy to explore.

SUNDAY 20TH MARCH - Narvik, Norway Founded in 1903, Narvik is a relatively new city but still offers a fascinating history. Located north of the Arctic Circle, the city’s harbour is surprisingly ice-free, however, there are still a number of stunning Arctic sights to see, including the Narvikfjellet Mountain.

Close to the shore you will find ‘Britain’s Great Barrier Reef’, the Cromer Shoals Chalk Bed, created in the Mesozoic Era when dinosaurs roamed. It is the longest in the world at 20 miles long and you can see it by swimming out and snorkelling. Unmissable on the Cromer skyline is the 160ft tower of 14th century church St Peter & Paul with vast stained glass windows commemorating Cromer’s lifeboat crew, the most decorated in RNLI history. There’s also a museum named after Henry Blogg, who served for 53 years on Cromer’s lifeboats, who, with his crew, saved over 873 lives from the North Sea. MONDAY – Comfortable on your reserved coach seat, your driver will travel into Shropshire with comfort stops on the way. When you arrive at the hotel you will be treated to a welcome tea or coffee whilst your cases are taken to your room.

TUESDAY – After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast travel just 20 minutes down the road to the Ironbridge Gorge museums. An all access ticket is included so you will be able to explore this amazing site at your leisure. A wonderful experience for all members of the family. You can meet the Victorians in their shops, cottages & places of work at Blists Hill Victorian Town, discover fascinating facts about Design & Technology with the help of huge interactive displays at Enginuity & admire magnificent collections of Coalport & Caughley China at Coalport China Museum or beautiful decorative tiles at Jackfield Tile Museum. This will be a full day out to remember. (The coach will move down the Gorge for access to all museums)

WEDNESDAY – Shrugborough Hall is our destination for today. A Staffordshire paradise: a rich blend of landscape, monuments, gardens and architecture, shaped by exploration and global encounters. Amongst the treasures you will find the Lions Foot, George Anson circumnavigated the glove on the Centurion between 1740 and 1744. He was only the second Englishman ever to do this, after Sir Francis Drake who sailed in the sixteenth century. It was on this journey that George Anson captured the Spanish treasure ship Nuestra Senora de Cavadonga. The lion’s leg is all that remains of the lion figure head that would have been on the bow of the ship. There will be a full day at leisure to explore the galleries and gardens.

THURSDAY – Today you can travel to the Black Country Living Museum. This fascinating tribute to those who lived in the centuries before us will delight you as you visit the traditional shops tended by people in original costume. In 2021 the museum was used as a major vaccination hub so joined the fight against the pandemic and we are sure those fans of Peaky Blinders will recognise some of the sets used in the series.

FRIDAY – We sadly say farewell to our hosts and travel back to Lincolnshire with comfort stops on the way.

First 4 singles are guaranteed no supplement

MONDAY – This morning we travel to Cromer with a stop in Kings Lynn on the way. The Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn was one of England’s most important ports from as early as the 12th century and this maritime past is still very much in evidence today. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the elegant Custom House overlooks the harbour. The town’s heritage is reflected in an amazing array of historic buildings. You should arrive at your hotel with plenty of time to settle in before your evening meal.TUESDAY – After breakfast we travel into Sheringham for free time to enjoy this beautiful town. This afternoon we meet the heritage railway for a journey to Holt. The day will fill you with nostalgia. The knowledgeable staff and ticket inspectors will give you plenty of information about the railways history. Operating from 1844 originally the line has had many changes and survived wars and other challenges to be the company we see today. The rest of the day is free to experience Holt at your leisure. Holt’s fine 18th century Georgian buildings make the town one of the most attractive in north Norfolk. The town is home to many art galleries, antique and book shops and places to eat located along the high street and tucked away in hidden, charming courtyards and alleyways.WEDNESDAY – Today please join your driver for a Nature walk through the Pensthorpe Natural Park. Exotic birds fly alongside the usual on the grounds of Pensthorpe. The walk through the reserve is beautiful, the gardens will have their Spring colours and the wildlife will be plentiful. This was the setting for Springwatch for 3 years 2007-2010. The Reserve showed it was able to offer more than just birds and the characters emerging from trees, reeds, lakes and meadows made for compulsive viewing with many Springwatch ‘firsts’ added to the list. From the breeding avocets to witnessing how gentle sparrowhawks can be as they turn their eggs and delicately feed their young, Springwatch at Pensthorpe made for fascinating viewing.THURSDAY – Today has been put aside for you to enjoy your resort, Cromer is well known for its pier which has a lifeboat station & Pavilion Theatre, home to the UK’s only remaining traditional end of the pier variety show. The pier is an enduring example of Victorian building, having withstood many storms, tidal surges and even an attempt to blow it up by the Government in WW2 to prevent the pier being used as a landing strip for enemy invaders! FRIDAY – We depart the hotel for our return journey to Lincolnshire, with a comfort stop enroute.

Blackpool is the quintessential seaside resort. The level promenade highlights the Golden Mile which makes the area easily accessible for all. There is so much to do, from the Tower, dominating the skyline to the waxworks and the 3 piers, all different in their own way, there is something for all tastes.

Where to start? Llanberis is packed with enough attractions to keep visitors busy for weeks. But first, there’s the lakeside location at the foot of Snowdon. When you’re tired of walking beside the water – which you won’t be – take a ride with your driver to enjoy your inclusions.

FRIDAY – Please take your seat on board our comfortable coach and join us for Easter in Llanberis. Today we travel into Snowdonia with a comfort stop on the way. We should arrive at the hotel with time to settle in to your amazing surroundings before your evening meal and welcome free glass of wine.

SATURDAY – After breakfast we travel to Portmeirion. In 1925, Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis acquired the site which was to become Portmeirion. He had been searching for a suitable site for his proposed ideal village for several years and when he heard that the Aber Iâ estate near Penrhyndeudraeth was for sale, he did not hesitate to make an offer. He wanted to show how a naturally beautiful location could be developed without spoiling it, and that one could actually enhance the natural background through sympathetic development. The Aber Iâ estate had everything he had hoped for as a site for his architectural experiment: steep cliffs overlooking a wide sandy estuary, woods, streams and a nucleus of old buildings. The site today is beautiful and well worth a visit.

EASTER SUNDAY – After a nice sleep in and a hearty breakfast your driver will take you into Llandudno for free time to enjoy the long wide Promenade in the spring air. Maybe enjoy an ice cream or scour the seaside shops for gifts for loved ones. We travel back to the hotel mid afternoon with time for you to freshen up before a night of entertainment and a gift for each person.

MONDAY – Please join us for a trip to the west coast. Your friendly driver will ensure comfort stops are made on your journey and you will arrive in time to settle in before your excellent evening meal and entertainment in the bar.

TUESDAY – Today is set aside for you to enjoy your resort. The only Blackpool Pier to hold Grade II listed status, the North Pier is a wonderful starting point for exploring Blackpool’s beaches. It is home to the North Pier Theatre, which hosts regular comedy and musical acts, while families will love the Victorian tea room, two-tier Venetian Carousel and ice cream parlour. You will also find an arcade where you can play the famous penny slots, and if you look carefully you will also notice the first ever Sooty puppet, purchased by original TV show presenter Harry Corbett in 1948.

WEDNESDAY – Today we travel down the coast to Southport. One of the best places to go is Lord Street, a tree-lined Victorian boulevard home to shops, restaurants and quaint tearooms, as well as the grand Wayfarers Arcade with its glass and iron-domed roof. Stroll along Southport’s pier, the country’s oldest iron pier, then maybe head to the beach and take a boat trip on Marine Lake, the UK’s largest man-made leisure lake. With a great choice of restaurants, along with three theatres, a museum and an art gallery, there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

THURSDAY – After a tasty breakfast your coach travels up the coast to Lancaster. Lancaster is one of England’s Heritage Cities. It’s as vibrant as it is quirky with a captivating past and a cultured present. A creative city. An independent city. A city with a great outdoors. A city to shout about. Lancaster is a city with great stories to tell.

FRIDAY – We sadly say farewell to or hosts and travel back to Lincolnshire with comfort stops on the way.

The facilities and atmosphere experienced in the hotel together with the hospitality and welcome extended by the staff make the Duke Of Gordon the ideal place to stay when visiting the Highlands.

The hotel is honoured that it is used as a base by the Macpherson Clan when clan members from all over the world visit the Highlands every year for their international gathering at the Duke. The Hotel prides itself on its restaurant and excellence of cuisine. The experience of dining in the elegance of the impressive Balmoral Restaurant with its heavily corniced ceilings and Peddie murals depicting Scottish Highland history and local scenes of great natural beauty is not one easily forgotten.

TUESDAY – After breakfast please join your driver for a trip on the Jacobite Steam Railway. Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. The end of the line, Mallaig was founded during the 1840s when the owner of the North Morar Estate, Lord Lovat, divided up the farm on the coast here into a series of parcels of land and encouraged his tenants living around Loch Morar and Loch Nevis to resettle in what became Mallaig and establish a fishing village. Brought back to life in 1978 by a dedicated group of volunteers, this ten mile restored section of the original Highland Railway Line enables you to travel back in time to an era when steam whistles blew, carriage doors slammed shut and there was a familiar click-clack, rhythm of the rails, as the train travels along the track.FRIDAY – We sadly say farewell to our hosts and travel back to Lincolnshire with comfort stops on the way.

Loyal to the British Crown, Guernsey and the rest of the Channel Islands became British Isles during the Norman conquest, creating a unique Anglo-French history that survives to this day. Today Guernsey is a self-governing ‘Bailiwick’, incorporating the smaller Channel Islands of Sark, Alderney and Herm. There are many quirky and charming features on the island, including unique Guernsey stamps and the island’s own currency - legal tender only in the Channel Islands (don’t worry though - British Sterling can also be used!)FRIDAY – After your home pick up, we will transport you to the airport (East Midlands or Birmingham) and ensure you are booked in with plenty of time to relax for your short flight over to the islands.

When you arrive in Guernsey airport you will be met by one of the fantastic Destination Specialist representatives who will point you towards your transfer coach to the hotel. Your cases will be taken to your room and you can soak in your gorgeous surroundings before your evening meal.

Known colloquially by Islanders as ‘town’ and home to around 18,000. There is always a feel of brightness and colour as the

streets are lined with flowers and bunting. There’s a distinct Mediterranean feel and an abundance of charm, with steep cobbled streets snaking their way up the hillside, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the 800 year-old Castle Cornet.

MONDAY – Today we visit Herm Island. Most visitors will agree that Herm Island is a magical place. Every inch of the island is steeped in history and mystery. The north end of the island is made up of beautiful beaches and the vast grassy common, where woolly mammoth roamed millions of years ago, Neolithic settlements have been found, and where recent digs uncovered evidence of a prehistoric beach. This is where smugglers landed with their wares hundreds of years ago, where pirates hung as a warning to others and where Prussian princesses walked in regal beauty. The east coast beaches, Shell and Belvoir, are where childhood memories are made. The soft white sand and clean blue water are perfect for play and swimming. The beach cafés are open in the summer months for snacks and sandwiches, and the famous Herm Ice Cream.

On the night of 16-17 May 1943, Wing Commander Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force on an audacious bombing raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley, the industrial heartland of Germany. The mission was codenamed Operation ‘Chastise’. The dams were fiercely protected. Torpedo nets in the water stopped underwater attacks and anti-aircraft guns defended them against enemy bombers. But 617 Squadron had a secret weapon: the ‘bouncing bomb’.

There’s hundreds of years of history to uncover, from Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada to the Mayflower sailing in 1620, to a city rebuilt following the Blitz during World War II. Castlehill, The old cobbled approach to the castle, is a short walk of some 80 metres though on a steep incline and consequently may prove difficult for some. In addition, there are approximately a further 60 metres followed by a dozen or so steps to be negotiated before you reach the spectator stands which in themselves are quite steeply tiered. The evening performance will be a spectacular sight. Pyrotechnics and the masterfully prepared display will have you mesmerised. You will get back to the hotel quite late full of amazing stories to tell.

There will be time to take a look around the museum and maybe catch a bite to eat. We follow with a trip to see the Kelpies. The Kelpies’ name reflects the mythological transforming beasts that possess the strength and endurance of 100 horses; a quality that’s analogous with the transformational change of the area’s landscapes, endurance of its inland waterways and the strength of its communities. The area around the massive sculptures has been designed to give access for all, meaning everyone can come and see them up close. We have included a tour for an exclusive look at their engineering and ingenuity which allows you to see the inside of these magnificent beasts. Don’t forget to round off your trip at the visitor centre.

A regularly reported sighting at Mercure Hotel Telford (formerly named Madeley Court Hotel) is that of a monk that is seen moving slowly across the grounds. Hood up and head down he ignores any attempt at communication and then slowly disappears into thin air. Other reports of similar activity have been seen on the top floor where members of staff and guests have reported seeing maids dressed in Victorian attire quietly going about their business cleaning the floors. Upon sighting, and attempts to communicate, they simply fade away into thin air or mysteriously disappear. The medieval mansion has been lovingly restored with the original features intact. With the theme in mind we have included trips to suit.

First 5 singles guaranteed with no supplement for this tour

FRIDAY – We hope you have your cameras ready for this tour. The hotel you are staying in has been voted the most haunted in the UK. Your driver will ensure comfort stops are made on the way to Shropshire and when you arrive you can enjoy a cuppa whilst your cases are taken to your room.

SATURDAY – We take you into the Victorian era today with a visit to Blists Hill. Here you’ll experience what life was like when Britain ruled the world. Meet some (almost) real Victorians in their authentic shops and cottages, buy curious goods from a bygone era and watch tradespeople in action in their atmospheric workshops and factories. What lurks below in the abandoned mine shafts? There was a tragedy in 1866 which claimed the lives of miners and their horses. The museum contains many authentic buildings recovered from various towns and villages in the local area. Painstakingly taken down brick by brick and rebuilt here...and it seems that echoes of past events within still linger. The industrial buildings here are original to the site itself and have bore witness to multiple deaths. This combination of haunted buildings rebuilt on an already haunted site has created one of the most unique and intriguing opportunities for you to experience the atmosphere and maybe, just maybe, see a ghostly presence.

SUNDAY – I hope you are ready for more spooky happenings. We have included a guided tour of HM Shrewsbury Prison. It has only been recently that investigators have had the chance to study the paranormal activity at HM Shrewsbury Prison, so there is no real information regarding who might be responsible for the strange occurrences! There are all sorts of strange reports coming out of the prison including unexplained bangs, cell doors crashing shut, disembodied wailing and so much more! Shrewsbury Prison is one of the oldest prisons in the UK and has a macabre and sinister history. A Victorian prison built upon the foundations of a Georgian prison, and with an unwelcome history of executions, death and sometimes barbaric treatment. This abandoned prison is vast with so many haunted areas to investigate. Many people report the sighting of somebody looking out of the window of the room where the executions took place. An ex-prison officer shines light on what life was like for prisoners, officers and visitors. Bringing the prison to life through a no-holds-barred tour of this historic and fascinating building.

MONDAY – We sadly say farewell to or hosts and travel back to Lincolnshire with comfort stops on the way.

We then travel on to the outskirts of Belfast to check in at our main hotel. On arrival you will have time to relax whilst your cases are being taken to your room.

WEDNESDAY – This morning we will take you up to the Giants Causeway. 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns, sliding into the sea like dark stone steps into bubbling foamy waves, a jaw-dropping sight. This afternoon we will drop you into the centre of Belfast for time at your leisure. Pointing to the city’s maritime history, the symbol of a seahorse has strong connections with Belfast. Early merchants printed the creature on their coins throughout the 17th Century, and two seahorses still feature on Belfast’s coat of arms. You’ll also spot seahorses around the city, including the seahorse sculpture at Belfast’s port and the glowing seahorse logo on the side of the lofty Grand Central Hotel.

THURSDAY – This morning we visit Belfast for a half day guided tour. Learn about the history and culture of Belfast from your informative guide. Grange is a pretty resort with an Edwardian flavour and a mild climate. It is on the shores of Morecambe Bay, and from the 13th Century until the 1850’s, the major route from Lancaster was across the sands. In 1887, the coming of the Furness Railway encouraged the growth of Grange from a small hamlet to the town we see today. Wealthy industrialists from Lancashire and Yorkshire were quick to build large houses here.

The first Lumiere light festival took place in Durham in 2009. Originally planned as a one-off, with the support of Durham County Council and other sponsors, producers Artichoke have brought the event back to the North East every other year since then. In 2017, a record 240,000 visitors came to Lumiere in Durham enjoying a programme that mixed family-friendly interactive installations with groundbreaking artistic commissions such as Pablo Valbuena’s Methods and Adam Frelin’s White Line, 3-D video-mapping, stand alone light sculptures, neons, a kinetic fire installation, and a flashmob of illuminated umbrellas dancing unexpectedly through the cobbled streets.

TUESDAY – Today has been put aside for you to enjoy your resort. Visitors love Fistral beach, which takes on an entirely different personality in the winter. It’s iconic, known across Europe for its consistently excellent surf. It faces due West and is lined with dramatic rocks and cliffs. When the weather cools down and the famous Cornish winds rise, it’s a thrillingly wild place dotted with hardy walkers, sometimes with enormous crashing waves, other times with a flat and millpond-calm ocean. The temperature of the water varies widely throughout the year, but the surfing carries on thanks to winter wetsuits, special cold water boots, gloves and hoods. You might even experience the legendary Cribbar Wave, an unpredictable monster that pops up on the north eastern end of Fistral Beach, the other side of the Headland Hotel, at random around twice a year. As an extra bonus, the beachcombing in winter is exceptional – who knows what you’ll find, quite apart from beautiful, delicate seashells.

WEDNESDAY – Today we travel to The Eden Project, With a worldwide reputation, and recognised by the British Travel Awards as the Best UK Leisure Attraction 4 years running (2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011) and the Silver Award for Best Leisure Attraction in 2016, Eden barely needs an introduction, but this epic destination definitely deserves a day of your undivided attention. More than just a huge, tropical garden, Eden is a gateway into the relationships between plants and people, and a fascinating insight into the story of mankind’s dependence on plant life. Not only a mind-blowing visitor attraction, Eden is also fast-becoming a unique resource for education and knowledge towards a sustainable future. This evening will begin with a quiz or bingo before your Christmas meal.
