VESIT bagged the prestigious Asia Education Summit & Awards 2017 in a gala event organised in the national capital Delhi on March 9. The award was formally given away by Worldwide Achievers. SMART INDIA HACKATHON VESIT was a part of and was one of the winner’s in the very first edition of the Smart India Hackathon, which was held on the 1-2 April 2017. Two teams from the college were shortlisted for the final 36 hours intensive coding round from out of the seven teams that participated, with one team securing the Second Runners-up position. • Rucha Desai (Final Year CMPN, B Div) secured 1st position in “Code For Good”, Mumbai 2016, organised by JP. Morgan Chase & Co, Goregaon office.

• Ashwija Shetty, Gaurav Vaswani , Urmi Jadhav (Final Year CMPN, C Div), secured 1st position and awarded with cash prize in “TECHNOKAGAZ - National level technical paper presentation” held on March 2017 at Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College, Govandi.

• Dr. Maya Bhat, Dr. Keya Doshi and Mr. Vijay Shejwalkar from Department of Humanities and Applied Sciences won 2nd prize in Poster Presentation at the NAAC sponsored National conference on Academic and Administration Audit organized by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) on 13th, 14th January 2017, at K.J. Somaiya college of science and commerce.

The Extension of VESIT's Building : The extension of VESIT's building from both the sides has been undertaken. 6th March 2017 was chosen as the auspicious day for Bhoomi poojan.

'Yoga in education and its benefits in Daily life'

Yoga is the artwork beautifully crafted on the canvas of body, mind and soul. It isn't about touching your toes; it's about the realization you get on your way down. To resonate these serene ideologies an interactive session on 'Yoga in education and its benefits in Daily life' was held in VESIT on 25th March2017. Our guest of honour, Dr Nagendra started the discussion with a short introduction to familiarise the audience with the vital role of yoga. He is the former vice-chancellor of Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusadhana Samastana (S-VYAS). The event was organised by our trustee Dr Lulla and was attended by all the trustees and Heads of Institute. The audience was enthralled by the plethora of yoga's benefits presented before them.

The life of Hashuji Advani, philanthropist and founder of Vivekanand Education Society (VES), is an ode to attaining the true ideals of the teachings of Swami Vivekanand, on whose teachings stands the foundation of this mighty institution, said Maharashtra Revenue& Public Works Minister Shri Chandrakant Patil. The Minister at an event organized in Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) to commemorate the 91st birth anniversary of Hashuji Advani, observed as “Nishkam Divas”.

Visit of Shri Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister of Finance, Planning & Forest, Govt. of Maharashtra Shri Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister of Finance, Planning & Forest, Govt. of Maharashtra, visited the VES campus on March 1 and motivated the participants at Connect 17, a seminar organized by Yuva for Seva, student wing of Vivekanand Education Society for bridging the gap between students, non-government organizations (NGOs) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professionals. The seminar also aimed to sensitize the student fraternity towards implementing social work agendas through Student Social Responsibility (SSR) initiatives. Several NGOs participated in the day-long seminar which involved deliberations and interactive sessions helmed by eminent corporate and social sector personalities.

ALUMNI MEETJAN 07, 2017 The Alumni meet was conducted on 7th January 2017 in the Amphitheatre at 7:00 PM. The event started off with inspiring words by our Managing Trustee Shri. Dinesh Tahliani & Member Trustee Shri. Suresh Bharwani. The distinguished Alumni Award was presented to following alumnus. Ms. Tanushree Bagrodia, (Computer – 2001), CFO and VP-IT of NRB Bearings Ltd (turnover USD 100m and Market Cap USD 200m), a leading provider of anti friction solutions to the global mobility industry. She became the youngest CFO of a listed top 500 company in India. In March 2016 she was honoured as a top 100 CFO in India by CFO India and by UK's CIMA, and was the youngest woman in the honour roll. She is an invited member of CII's National CFO committee and a regular contributor at CII events. She was invited by FICCI to lead the automotive sector for an Indo-Mexican trade delegation to Mexico. In April 2016, INSEAD honoured her as the INSEADer of the month, a recognition for distinguished alumnus that include the current Finance Minister of Canada. A keen observer of Indian politics, she covered the 2009 general elections for a US based online magazine, The south Wing. A thoughtful leader, she contributes to varied CFO publications and an aspiring writer, she has a regular blog that expresses her views on varied topics from women empowerment to life to city infrastructure. Mr. Anubhav Sonthalia, (Computer – 2002) Co-founder & COO, SokratiAnubhav is responsible for formulating digital marketing strategies, managing ad spends, and driving transactions for Sokrati's numerous clients across seven countries, headquartered in Pune, India. He leads a team of 130 expert business analysts and oversees operations and delivery for Sokrati. Prior to co-founding Sokrati, Mr. Sonthalia was Product and Program Manager at Amazon Seattle, driving efficiency at scale for Amazon's Comparison Shopping Program.

Before moving to Product Management, Anubhav worked as a Software Engineer at Amazon, conceptualizing and implementing solutions for managing large (running into tens of millions of rows a day) data feeds from partners. Prior to joining Amazon, he built semantic web services used in biogrid task computing. Placement

The recruitment and placement domain has also seen a movement from Knowledge based recruitment to Skill based recruitment. The placement for the year 2017-2018 has been promising so far. Twenty five companies have visited us so far and made total 500 offers to 733 eligible students. Highlights of this year’s recruitment are that Media.net selected 2 students for the first time. Morgan Stanley has selected one student this time with an offer of 16 Lakhs /annum. J P Morgan had a Code for Good contest and selected in all 13 students. Nomura selected 13 students in all out of which 3 students were through a coding contest called Kakushi. TCS selected 7 students through the codevita contest. Accenture and have for the first time crossed the 300 mark and has been our major recruiter by selecting 326 students, followed by L&T Infotech selecting 68 students. This year has also witnessed a paradigm shift in salaries. TCS, NSEIT, Media.net, Selec controls Pvt. Ltd are the companies which have given differential salary package based on the performance of students ranging from 4.5 to 7.6 Lakhs/ Annum. Selec Controls Pvt. Ltd has selected 6 students so far and final interviews of some more students are pending due to theory exams.

MCA students have got more opportunities for internship with many companies visiting us for the first time. Out of 53 offers made to MCA students, 20 students are doing internship and are likely to get converted to full time offers. Nomura has continued to support us by selecting 8 MCA students for internship. Each company has a criteria and students satisfying that criteria are allowed to appear for the process. Based on that we have 733 students out of 857 students in final year. Instrumentation and core companies based companies have just started with campus placements. Companies like Technip, Burns & McDonnell, Larsen and Toubro Ltd will be visiting us shortly. We are confident that the placements for instrumentation students will improve significantly by the end of the academic year which has been the trend for core jobs every year. The placement cell is continuously striving to get companies with higher package along with companies in the core branch sector. We have initiated a Special Recruitment Cell to cater to those students who donot get opportunities on campus. The objective is to cater to their special needs of training in both technical and soft skills domain. We then explore the job opportunities available to them. The placement cell takes this opportunity to thank the management, Principal, Vice –Principal, Head of Departments, Placement In-charges and placement coordinators for their whole hearted support and cooperation during the recruitment drive. Reports PRAXIS 2017 Praxis is one of the best technical fests that happen at VESIT. Every student in VESIT marked their calendars for 22nd and 23rd of September eagerly waiting and enthusiastic about this year’s Praxis. One special thing about this year’s Praxis was that, unlike previous years where we had Accenture sponsoring this event, this year; it was totally managed by the college committee and the students themselves. One of the great things about praxis is the vast amount of events and workshops that are held. This year there were around 35 events and workshops in total which is really appreciable. Few of the many interesting events were 1. Tech Quiz This is a Technical Quiz based on following Topics: Technical subjects, Present trends in technology, Current affairs, Discoveries, Scientists and scientific Innovations, Sports, General Issues. 2. Project Expo! This was an event which allowed students to showcase their project which they had developed from the scratch. They were allowed to display their Technical skills in this and get a feedback from the audience. 3. Robosoccer Two bots battle it out to score the maximum goals within a time limit. The field is perched on top of a see-saw. In the qualifying rounds the participants must score as many points to qualify to the next round. Few of the many workshops that Praxis conducted were 1. Design Thinking The workshop was presented by Indian School of Design and Thinking (ISDI) on career paths within Design and Innovation, Media, and Communication, Management and Entrepreneurship. 2. Robotics Process Automation This workshop intended to cover: RPA Introduction, RPA Tool “WinAutomation” Overview, Hands-on using Win-Automation. Praxis’17 had the proper balance of fun, technical and educational events reflected the artistic and tech-based skills among the peers.

The meticulous planning by the entire Praxis Committee surely paid off. Surely Praxis’17 has redefined standards for an event of this magnitude to be conducted in the years to come.

One day Workshop was organized by BIRAC Regional Innovation Centre (BRIC) in collaboration with IKP Hyderabad and Vivekanand Education Society (VES). Title of the workshop: Funding Channels for Academic Entrepreneurs, Business Aspects for Technopreneurs and Success Stories. Objective:Make in India is a major new national program aimed to foster innovations and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure in India. To make this dream a reality, it is necessary to orient present generation and academia towards the concept of entrepreneurship, and qualities of successful entrepreneurs. Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) is a not-for-profit Public Sector Enterprise, set up by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, as a new industry-academia Interface Agency with a vision to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Proceedings of the workshop: The workshop was inaugurated by Shri. B.L. Boolani, Senior Trusty, VES. Welcome note on BRIC workshop and Success Stories was delivered by Ms. DeepanwitaChattopadhyay, Chairman and CEO, IKP Knowledge Park. Dr. Dr. RamjeePallela, Chief Manager, IKP Knowledge Park delivered presentation on various funding programs under BIRAC. Dr. RanajitSen, Start-up mentor, IKP Knowledge Park, Ex VP Shanta Biotech, talked about various business aspects to be considered by technopreneurs for commercialising technology. The workshop gave the insight to the various grants provided by BIRAC to fund the research mainly in the domain of life science and engineering; and also concept of entrepreneurship, and qualities of successful entrepreneurs. Workshop registration was free of cost.Around 200 faculty and students participated in the workshop. Ten faculty members participated from VESIT.

Remote Patient Health Monitoring System

Four final year Electronics and Telecommunication students Ashni Damaria, Laveena Dulani, Preksha Goyal and Rahul Goswami have gone beyond textbooks to develop a prototype, the remote patient health monitoring system, that will help doctors monitor rural patients’ vital signs to facilitate better diagnosis. What started out as a final year project may now turn into something that could boost rural healthcare in the region. The students pooled in resources to come up with the seed money of Rs 7,500, which was reimbursed by the college. The group came up with suggestions to enhance the device’s functioning. “A sensor will be attached to a patient’s finger to monitor and record vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. The data recorded can be accessed by the doctor through the use of a computer or mobile device in another location

'Road Divider Based Power Generation and Street Light Illumination' The students of final year EXTC final year - Ramanathan Choodamani, Shivesh Hiranandani, Shubham Koyande, Ketan Vaidya, guided by Mrs. Ashwini Sawant, succesfully presented project titled 'Road Divider Based Power Generation and Street Light Illumination' which won the 2nd position in University Final Round of AVISHKAR 2016-17 - A Research Convention. They would be representing University of Mumbai in the next Round. The proposed model demonstrates the generation of electricity with the help of wind energy from the vehicular movement on the highways. The light automation helps in efficient use of generated electricity.

Workshop: Internet of Things using Arduino

Departments of Computer, IT and MCA of VESIT organized six days workshop on “Internet of Things using Arduino from 3rd July to 8th July, 2017 in collaboration with EDC-IIT Roorkee. The objective of this Program is how to create Internet of Things using Arduino.

All the six days session was taken by Mr.Bipul Kumar, Sr.Research Engineer, Finland Labs. He was an excellent trainer who helped the participants to understand how to create Internet of Things using Arduino. On first day of the session Mr.Bipul taught how to install Arduino software in the device and also how to code inside Arduino, followed by second day, participants learned to work on some AT commands of Wi-Fi and to connect Wi-Fi module with PC and to mobile phones.

On the third and fourth day participants learned how to connect BT in Arduino and pair it and also created an Application Using MIT-APP inventor. Students designed their app and performed an android experiment.

On the fifth day students wrote a program on notepad ++ and created a web page with help of JavaScript in which 3 toggle buttons were made for 3 different LED'S and send commands from browser to Arduino with Wi-Fi(ESP)Module. On last day a small competition among all the members of workshop was held to understand the topic grasped by the participants.

In order to become a professional and remain competitive in this highly commercial world one has to master the art of working in groups and teams along with sound knowledge of the field. Having a good balance of team work along with technical knowledge cannot be developed overnight and requires an attitude of sharing and caring.

The rapid changes in the technology is due to the application of discoveries and inventions in the basic science domain. We need to be observant as to how basic science, (physics, chemistry, mechanics, mathematics) make a difference in our day to day life.

Awakening the Scientist is an opportunity given to the First year students to take the first step in this transformation of a student to a professional. First year students make groups and each group identifies the basic engineering and technology used in equipment’s, gadgets and tools used in day to day life. The group will have to relate to the past, present and future of the technology used. This year , EIGHT groups with total number of students as 33 had registered for this event during 2016-2017. The groups then gave a twenty minutes presentation on the same. In this competition following is the winner's list:

This year Instrumentation day and ISA-Symposium, VESIT chapter were clubbed as a single event on 30th March 2017 at 15.00-17.00 Hrs. After symposium, an event called “Kaun Banega INSTRUpati” was held, which is a technical Quiz based on the TV show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”. The Guests of Honor for this event was Mr. Kaustubh Dabholkar (Jacobs) and Mrs. Vrunda Dabholkar (Professional Event Organizer). “Kaun Banega INSTRUpati” event was anchored by Mr. Kaustubh Dabholkar. Dr. R.K. Kulkarni has recently been appointed as member, Board of studies of EXTC at Mumbai University. He has been driving the syllabus change process. M.E. syllabus is modified and undergraduate syllabus is undergoing changes from credit based to choice based system V.E.S. Institute of Technology (V.E.S.I.T) - Competency Development Center” by “Automation Industry Association (AIA)” conducted “Integrated Automation: Basic Course” again from 13th January 2017 to 20th January 2017. Five students were trained in the course. VESIT Labview Academy, Instrumentation faculty, Mr. Kadar Shaikh, Mrs. Kanchan Chavan and Mrs. Sangeetha Prasanna Ram, conducted “Labview Core 1 and Core 2 course” for 16 students from 6th January 2017 to 12th January 2017.

Short Term Training Program On Wavelet and Machine Learni (July 2017)

Electronics and Telecommunication department organized Short Term Training Program on “WAVELETS AND MACHINE LEARNING” during 3rd July, 2017 to 8th July, 2017. Dr. Manesh Kokare (IIT, Kharagpur), S.G.G.S institute of technology, Nanded was the guest lecturer for all 6 days. He had done his Ph.D in ‘wavelet based features for texture image retrieval’. He developed three new algorithms in ‘Diabetic Retinopathy’ during his Post Doctoral research from University of California.

The practical sessions were conducted in evening session for all days. In practical sessions participants implemented one-band, two-band wavelets,

tree structured wavelets, m-band wavelets, supervised learning algorithm, minimum distance classifier, K-means algorithm. Total 45 participants were registered for STTP where 26 participants from EXTC, 5 participants from ETRX, 2 participants from INST, 1 participant External candidate from Vardha & 11 participants were students of ME EXTC. PROJECT SKILL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

The department of Electronics Engineering organized one week workshop to enhance project skill of third year students during 10th July 2017 to 15th July 2017 . Thirty Three students participated in the workshop.

The students were introduced to a new circuit simulation software “SEQUEL” and were given hands on experience by simulating and explaining one circuit.

Internal Complaint Committee by WDC In association with Maharashtra State Commission for Women and ComplyKaro

The Government of India has recently promulgated The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Act, 2013 ("Act") and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Rules, 2013 ("Rules") with effect from 9th December, 2013. The act was laid down to ensure that women in particular are protected against sexual harassment at all workplaces, be it in public or private. It has now become mandatory to have an anti sexual harassment policy in place as well as for a Internal Complaint Committee to be formed in addition to reports being filed with the government for the same. It is compulsory for all institutes under AICTE / UGC to Constitute “Internal Complaints Committee (regulation has come into the force since 1st July 2016) according to the guidelines given in page no 9 of Zero Tolerance for sexual Harassment of students and Women in colleges and Universities book let. VESIT has constituted its Internal Complaint Committee for Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal of the same issue. On 27th Feb 2017, VESITconducted an event to sensitize students about the topic of Sexual Harassment in universities and colleges.

Special drive for registration of eligible Electors

The Election Commission of India has launched a special drive for registration of eligible electors. Voters are encourage to fill Form 6 (new voter registration form). It is a campaign about “No voters to be left behind”. One desk wasarranged at VESIT Main Entrance from 13th July 2017 to 31st July 2017 for VESIT Students and Staff.
