Quality Assurance from Start to Finish: Manufactured Exclusively in the USA

At Kan Herb Company, we assume responsibility for every level of the manufacturing process. Meticulous about the efficacy, quality and safety of every proprietary product, Kan Herb Company manufactures its products at our facilities in California, in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). We control all phases of the production process, from procurement and testing of raw ingredients to the manufacturing and packaging of our formulas.

Quality is expressed throughout – in our use of innovative technologies, producing the greatest percentage of active herbal material per ounce, to excellence in customer service and professional consultation.

The Kan CommitmentAt Kan Herb Company, quality starts at the source with high-grade Chinese herbs. We assemble, test and manufacture our herbal formulas at our facility in the United States, following stringent manufacturing standards, to assure that the potency and purity you expect is in every bottle. Kan Herb Company’s assessment and testing of each herbal ingredient means that, regardless of seasonal and market variations, Kan Herb formulas are composed of the highest quality materials. Every step of the manufacturing process is evaluated according to rigorous qualitative and quantitative standards. We test every incoming

lot of herbs for more than 250 different pesticides as well as all toxic metals and bio-burdens, such as yeast, mold, E. coli, Staphylococcus, Salmonella and total aerobic plate count. Our Certificates of Analysis (see pages 7 and 8) attest to the extensive testing our products undergo.

Every herb is inspected for appropriate genus and part, as well as for quality and freshness, using traditional organoleptic methodology, and testing such as HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography). The herbs’ size, shape, aroma, taste and texture are examined for the purpose of identification as well as quality. Each herb is also examined for cleanliness and for the absence of filth or animal parts, bugs or larvae. Only superior grades are selected, and any adulterated, improperly substituted or poor quality herbs are rejected. Our database contains detailed specification describing the physical characteristics and quality markers of more than 300 Chinese herbs.

Certain Chinese herbs are treated with sulfur to give them an appearance of freshness and, as a result, many have demonstrated unacceptably high levels of sulfites. At Kan Herb Company, our first concern is safety, and we make every effort to ensure that our herbs are indeed sulfite-free.

We choose to use organic herbs when available, such as is the case with our Ginseng, as we have access to a steady supply of organic-grade material. The selection of organic Chinese herbs, while growing, is not yet encompassing of all of the herbs that we use regularly, nor is it always available.

TESTING FOR SAFETYOnce the herbs have passed the initial Quality Control requirements, they are tested for heavy metals, over 250 types of pesticide residues and microbiological contaminants. We ensure that our products are free of any herb that may contain aristolochic acid.

TESTS PERFORMEDOver 250 pesticide agents are screened, including: • Organophosphates• Organonitrogen• Organochloride• N-Methyl CarbamateHeavy Metals Screened:• Lead• Cadmium• Arsenic• MercuryMicrobiological Screening:• Total Aerobic Plate Count• E. Coli• Total Coliforms• Yeast and Mold• SalmonellaProduct Identification:• Organoleptic Testing• Chemical Identity Testing (HPTLC)Stability Testing

Current Good Manufacturing PracticesTo ensure that our finished products are of consistently high quality, and to prevent materials from being adulterated or contaminated, we have established manufacturing controls that meet or exceed recognized current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) set forth by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Our internal manufacturing controls provide documented proof that correct procedures are consistently followed, at each step of the manufacturing process, every time the product is made. Our cGMPs assure the safety, purity, consistent composition and quality of all of our finished products.

Extensive controls cover the sanitation and hygiene of our facilities, utensils, production materials and containers, as well as frequent, and at least weekly, testing of our manufacturing equipment, utensils and holding tables for total aerobic count, yeast and mold, E. coli and total coliforms. Utilizing qualitative and quantitative analysis, Kan Herb Company’s Quality Control unit oversees all procedures, procurements, specifications, controls, tests and examinations that impact the purity, quality and composition of an ingredient or product. All raw materials, in-process and finished Chinese herbal dietary supplements are inspected by our Quality Control unit; complete inspection records and laboratory tests are maintained.

Controls are also in place for handling in-process dietary materials throughout each step of the production process, such as worksheets and traveling tags, assuring consistency from batch to batch, easy monitoring, and averting opportunities for adulteration. All bulk herbal ingredients are stored in temperature-controlled quarantine areas. In-process dietary supplements are labeled with a formula identification number, lot number, receiving date and expiration date for easy tracking by our Quality Control (QC) department. Finished product is bottled in approved containers that are then capped and sealed with a tamper-proof covering and shrink-wrapped. Every bottle is barcoded for ease of tracking. Our entire manufacturing plant and warehouse are monitored daily for proper temperature and humidity.

Our Master Manufacturing Record (MMR) specifies every step that must be performed, from the dietary ingredients being used to the end result – a bottle ready to be sold. At every step of the manufacturing process, a QC technician verifies weight and ingredients, attesting that each step of production is performed as specified in the MMR, and attesting that the in-process dietary supplement is clearly identified.

Any dietary ingredient, in-process, finished dietary supplement, packaging unit or label not meeting specifications is rejected. The rejection is recorded in our rejection log, documenting the reason why it was rejected. Any deviation or out-of-specification to the manufacturing cycle is investigated, and approved or rejected by Quality Control. Our safety limits meet or exceed United States Pharmacopeia’s (USP) recommended limits for heavy metals, total bacterial count, yeast, mold, E. coli and Salmonella.

3

MICROBIAL LIMITS Microbial limits for incoming dietary ingredients, for both tablets and liquid extracts, in-process and finished dietary supplements are as follows:

(CFUs) per gram for tablets• 10,000 CFUs per gram for liquid

Testing for SafetyOnce the herbs have passed the initial Quality Control examination and identity tests, they are subsequently tested for heavy metals, more than 250 types of pesticide residues, and microbiological contaminants. The newest technologies are employed, providing a high level of sensitivity for any desired marker, and a highly accurate representation of activity. Our tests are comprehensive, accurate, and available in reports that are easy to understand. Thanks to the rigorous testing of each herbal ingredient, our customers are assured that Kan Herb Company’s proprietary products are composed of the highest quality herbal materials.

Our finished dietary supplements are tested for total aerobic count, E. coli, coliforms, yeast, mold and salmonella; and for heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury. We perform stability testing to ensure the quality of our products over time. Stability testing is performed at one, two, three and four years after the manufacturing date for all our finished dietary supplements. Tests include total bacterial count, and yeast and mold.

All batches of finished product must be approved by Quality Control before they can be bottled and released for sale. If the formula does not match specified standards, it is rejected.

A Certificate of Analysis is made for each finished dietary supplement. This is available to the public and practitioners on our website (www.kanherb.com) for all of our finished proprietary dietary supplements. The Certificate of Analysis includes all pesticide, microbiological and heavy metal levels found in that specific batch for that specific formula.

Concentrated and Readily Absorbed Herbal ExtractsOnce our dietary ingredients have passed quality inspection and testing, they are compounded into a formula and painstakingly blended and ground, making the active ingredients more accessible. They are processed according to Kan Herb Company’s unique water/alcohol extraction methodology.

Excellent manufacturing techniques are required to yield the high concentration of active ingredients necessary for effective herbal therapy. Due to the molecular composition of the herbs, some herbs extract well in water, while others, such as Ginseng, require alcohol to extract the active ingredients (such as ginsenocides). Kan Herb Company’s innovative closed system, water-alcohol matrix extraction process ensures that all active ingredients are captured, while letting no volatile oils escape. With strict control of temperature and timing, the herbs are extracted at low temperatures, with all volatile oils captured in our closed glass system. The water is purified through a reverse osmosis process. All stages of

4

the cooking process are clearly identified with cooking, pressing, extraction and centrifuge time, and certified at every stage by a Quality Control Technician.

This process ensures a complete extraction that yields maximum active ingredients from each of the herbs being extracted. The diversity of taste and smell inherent to each herb found in each formula is clearly rendered in the final product.

Batch to batch consistency of each lot of finished liquid extract is verified. Each product is referenced against up to three prior batches, confirming proper extraction as indicated by consistent color, appearance, odor and taste. The highest level of active constituents are included in our final product, rendering small batches of fresh, full-spectrum herbal extracts with an 8:1 potency. Our extracts are of remarkable character, enriched with the individual flavors and clinical potency that the ancient herbal masters intended.

Liquid extracts are the most bioavailable form of delivery available, surpassing any other mode of delivery, including tablets or concentrated powders. Easy to digest, they are ideal for those with weak digestion or difficulty swallowing pills, such as in the case for many older people and children. Our concentrated water/alcohol extracts are usually assimilated within 15 minutes of ingestion.

When the movement of Blood and Qi is the chosen course of action, extracts are generally more effective. Some individuals also appreciate the very direct experience of the herbs, through their strong taste. The flexibility offered by the liquid extracts allows practitioners to quickly modify any formula to tailor it to the individual’s needs.

It is our experience that the small amount of alcohol consumed has little or no impact, and is offset by the overall effect of the herbs. If an alcohol-free administration is desired, extract drops may be added to freshly boiled water. Allow five to ten minutes for alcohol to evaporate.

The alcohol used in our liquid extracts is a corn/grain blend and certified to be gluten-free. USP-grade vegetable palm derived

glycerin is added to the Gentle Warriors/Peacemakers pediatric formulas and the Kan Essentials formulas.

Potency in a TabletEach in-process product, or individual herbal material is cooked using steam and pressure when needed. The product is compounded, finely milled and thoroughly blended. The resulting potent and bioavailable powdered material is tableted, utilizing varying levels of direct cold compression. Natural binders are only used when absolutely necessary. For preservation and easy swallowing, the tablets are coated with microcellulose, a natural FDA-approved vegetable based coating.

The tablets are tested to ensure quality and consistency. Meticulous tests for disintegration, weight and uniformity, hardness and friability are performed. Disintegration tests follow USP methodology monograph 2040 for nutritional supplements. Kan Herb Company’s tablet disintegration rate is 30 minutes, with full assimilation normally occurring in four to six hours, the industry standard. The weight and uniformity of our tablets is confirmed by following USP methodology monograph 2091 for weight variation of nutritional supplements.

Hardness tests are conducted following standard industry practices; a machine gently applies pressure to determine their breaking strength, or hardness; they are distressed in a tumbler to determine friability and breakage. This thorough testing assures a tablet that is uniform, fresh, potent and bioavailable, as well as carrier-free.

Comparative UsageWe understand the convenience of tablets as a method of dosage. The majority of Kan Essentials formulas have been administered in pill or powder form for centuries. Water decoctions have become popular only in the past hundred years.

The tablets are particularly effective or recommended when a low dosage is indicated for long-term supplementing therapy. Tablets are preferred for animals with alcohol intolerance.

5

Compliance improves for these animals with tablet dispensing; tablets are easy to take. Alcohol (approximately 20% of a liquid extract) is considered by some herbalists to be too warming when used in formulas that clear Heat and nourish Yin.

Packaged for Freshness and PurityKan Herb Company is highly conscious of the quality of materials used in the packaging of our products.

All Kan products are packaged in either glass or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles, approved by the FDA, and the most accepted form of environmentally sound and healthy packaging available. They are a recyclable material used throughout the industry for packaging. HDPE bottles are resistant to impact, moisture and permeability, and are used for the packaging of all of our tablets. Our liquid extracts are enclosed in amber glass bottles.

At Kan Herb Company, we are committed to ensuring our products remain fresh throughout their shelf life. Sterilized bottles are filled using clean automated bottle technology, and each bottle is shrink-wrapped to protect against tampering.

Shelf Life and StorageWell preserved in the alcohol solution, liquid extracts have a very long shelf life. Evaporation of alcohol is the only limiting factor, in which case the herbs will eventually congeal. Sealing the bottle tightly after use will prevent this. Our herbal constituents remain well preserved in the water/alcohol solution. We have assigned a three-year expiration date for our liquid extracts.

With proper storage, the shelf life of Kan Herb Company tablets is three years. Once opened, exposure to air, moisture, heat and light will accelerate the formula’s natural process of erosion. Seal the bottle after each use and store tablets in a cool, dry, dark place.

Environmental ResponsibilityKan Herb Company is highly conscious of materials used in the shipping and packaging of our products. Products are shipped in “air pouches” and biodegradable starch, which helps prevent environmental degradation.

APR Nourishing FormulaZhi Bai Di Huang WanKidney and Liver Yin Deficiency, Liver Blood Deficiency, Empty Heat and Fire

INGREDIENTSENGLISH PHARMACEuTICAL PINYINRaw Rehmannia root Rehmanniae radix Sheng di huangAsiatic cornelian cherry Corni fructus Shan zhu yuTree peony root bark Moutan cortex Mu dan piAnemarrhena rhizome Anemarrhenae rhizoma Zhi muPhellodendron bark Phellodendri cortex Huang baiPoria Poria sclerotium Fu ling Chinese yam rhizome Dioscoreae rhizoma Shan yaoAsian water plantain rhizome Alismatis rhizoma Ze xie

ABOuT THE HERBSExcept for Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome, APR Nourishing Formula (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) contains all the herbs that constitute Rehmannia Six (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan), a well-renowned classical formula addressing Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency with Empty Heat. The two herbs added to Rehmannia Six in APR Nourishing Formula provide increased cooling effects, allowing it to address more severe Empty Fire patterns, as well as Heat accumulations in the Lower Burner.

Three of these six herbs are tonics. Raw Rehmannia root nourishes Kidney Yin and cools Blood; Asiatic cornelian cherry nourishes Liver Blood and Yin, and helps astringe Kidney Essence leakage; Chinese yam rhizome astringes Essence while helping in avoiding Dryness in the Kidneys, Lung and Middle Burner.

Balancing the potential cloying effects of these three tonics are three moving and draining herbs. Asian water plantain rhizome promotes urination in the Lower Burner where raw Rehmannia root acts, giving it a cooling action. Poria provides gentle Spleen support and leaches Damp from the Middle Burner where Chinese yam rhizome acts. Tree peony root bark clears Heat and drains Fire from the Liver, moderating the Empty Heat accumulating in the body. Asiatic cornelian cherry warms and astringes.

To this base formula of six herbs, Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome are added. They work as a pair to clear Heat and protect the Yin, respectively, adding significantly to the overall cooling effect of APR Nourishing Formula.

If there are signs of Spleen Qi deficiency, adding a Spleen Qi tonic like Six GentlePets (Si Jun Zi Tang) is advisable. If Yang becomes depleted, using Rehmannia Eight Combination (Ba Wei Di Huang Wan) can help counter this tendency.

ABOuT THE HERBSBenefit Hips and Knees (Xiao Chai Hu Jia Qin Jiao Tang) contains all of the herbs in the classical formula Minor Bupleurum (Xiao Chai Hu Tang), one of the world’s oldest, most important and most widely used herbal formulas. The formula was published in the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Febrile Disease) by Zhang Zhong-Jing as early as 200 A.D., and was originally developed to expel deeply penetrated invasions lodged in the Shao Yang (Lesser Yang), which is the innermost layer of Yang right next to the body’s Yin core. While the indication may seem obscure, it is the most important formula to ensure the smooth flow of Qi along the longitudinal axis of the body (i.e. the Triple Burner) as well as from the body core to the limbs (i.e. the Gallbladder channel). Large-leaf gentian root is specifically added to guide the formula to enter the Gallbladder channel and to expel Wind Damp from the channels.

The herbs in the foundational formula are as follows: Cool and pungent Bupleurum root expels invasion of the Shao Yang by expanding forcefully upwards and outwards, clearing the Gallbladder channel in the process. Bitter cold Chinese skullcap root descends Yang from the Upper Burner, to where it can reintegrate with the Lower Burner to generate Qi. Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, Red jujube fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome address any Qi deficiency that has occurred following the failure of Yang and Yin to merge. Licorice cured Pinellia rhizome transforms any Phlegm obstructions of the Gallbladder channel and the Triple Burner. Ginger rhizome harmonizes the Middle Burner, helping to direct rebellious Qi down and expel Wind Damp invasions.

Benefit Hips and Knees Formula was specifically designed to address the more superficially located disharmonies associated with Gallbladder channel obstruction. Open the Liver Canals (Xiao Chai Hu Jia Yu Jin Tang) is used when there is obstruction of the Triple Burner producing signs of stasis at the level of the blockage in the upper abdomen.

OFFERED IN 250 MG. TABLETS, 500 MG. TABLETS AND IN CONCENTRATED LIQuID EXTRACTS.

ABOuT THE HERBSBlood’s Palace (Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang) invigorates Blood in the chest and addresses Liver Qi stagnation and Liver Blood deficiency. It contains two famous classical formulas; Four Cold Extremities Formula (Si Ni San) to release constraint and regulate the Spleen, Si Wu Tang to tonify Blood.

Bupleurum root, Chinese red peony root, dry fried Bitter orange mature fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome constitute the subformula Four Cold Extremities Formula, first elaborated by Zhang Zhong-Jing in his The Discussion of Cold Febrile Disease, ca. 500 A.D. Chinese red peony root supports Liver Blood, indirectly allowing the Liver to move Qi. It also has a Blood-moving effect while Bupleurum root has a Qi-moving effect. Dry fried Bitter orange mature fruit likewise moves Qi internally while Chinese licorice root and rhizome both harmonizes the formula and works with Chinese red peony root to relax the sinews and eliminate stagnation.

Si Wu Tang was first described by Wu Qian in The Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition in 1742. The design of Si Wu Tang acknowledges the need to move Blood in order to tonify it. Chinese red peony root and Sichuan lovage rhizome contribute a Blood-moving effect while raw Rehmannia root tonifies Blood, and Dong quai root does both. Carthamus flower and dry fried peeled Peach seed invigorate Blood.

Chinese red peony root is used instead of Chinese white peony root to help cool the Blood of any stasis Heat. To further cool Blood, raw Rehmannia root has been substituted for the prepared Rehmannia root normally used. Platycodon root guides the formula to the Upper Burner, and Cyathula root further eliminates stasis and descends Blood out of the Upper Burner. Bupleurum root also helps guide the formula peripherally and contributes a cooling influence.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSInvigorates Blood stasis in the Upper Burner, disperses Liver Qi stagnation, invigorates Blood, opens channels and tonifies Liver Blood.

PHYSICAL INDICATIONS• Occasional irritability, anxiety,

timidity, noise sensitivity, territoriality, fatigue, restless sleep.

Bupleurum and Kudzu Clearing FormulaJia Wei Chai Ge Jie Ji TangWind Cold Invasion Transforming to Wind Heat

INGREDIENTSENGLISH PHARMACEuTICAL PINYINBupleurum root Bupleuri radix Chai huPubescent angelica root Angelicae pubescentis radix Du huoChinese skullcap root Scutellariae radix Huang qinKudzu root Pueraria lobatae (or Thomsonii) radix Ge genWhite peony root Paeoniae alba radix Bai shaoNotopterygium root and rhizome Notopterygii rhizoma et radix Qiang huoRed jujube fruit Jujubae fructus Hong zaoGypsum Gypsum fibrosum Sheng shi gaoFragrant angelica root Angelicae dahuricae radix Bai zhiPlatycodon root Platycodonis radix Jie gengGinger rhizome Zingiberis rhizoma Gan jiangChinese licorice root and rhizome Glycyrrhizae radix et rhizoma Gan cao

ABOuT THE HERBSBupleurum and Kudzu Clearing Formula (Jia Wei Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang) formula consists of cool pungent herbs to disperse Wind from each of the three exterior Yang layers, which are associated with the Shao Yang, Yang Ming and Tai Yang channels. Kudzu root and Notopterygium root and rhizome expel Wind from the Tai Yang, while White peony root regulates the pores in the Tai Yang or Wei layer. Gypsum and Fragrant angelica root expel invasions from the Qi layer and the Yang Ming channels, while Chinese skullcap root has an added cooling effect on the Upper Burner. Bupleurum root is the lone herb to push invasions of the Shao Yang layer all the way back out to the body periphery. Platycodon root directs the formula to the Upper Burner, as does Chinese skullcap root. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies the Stomach Qi, as well as harmonizes the herbs for better synergy. Ginger rhizome and Red jujube fruit also promote digestion of the formula, but assist in a minor way with the main thrust of the formula, which is to release the invasion, and build up Blood and Nutritive Qi to resist further entry.

Because of the use of Chinese skullcap root, Platycodon root, and even Notopterygium root and rhizome, the thrust of the formula as originally designed, was to expel Wind invasion of the Upper Burner. With the addition of Pubescent angelica root, the formula extends its Wind-expelling effect to the low back and Lower Burner. Another difference from the original formula is the use of increased amounts of Bupleurum root, Notopterygium root and rhizome and White peony root to enhance its Wind-expelling effect and to relieve stagnation.

OFFERED IN 500 MG. TABLETS AND IN CONCENTRATED LIQuID EXTRACTS.

ABOuT THE HERBSThe main focus of Calm Repose (Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin) is to anchor upward rising Yang and Wind due to Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency. To that effect, Gastrodia rhizome and Gambir stem branch and twig, the main herbs in the formula, serve to subdue Liver Yang and extinguish Internal Wind. Abalone shell assists in the sinking of Yang back into the Lower Burner with its heavy mineral content.

Gardenia fruit and Chinese skullcap root clear Heat from the Upper Burner and the Heart. Siberian motherwort herb and Cyathula root open the Upper Burner to allow Yang energy and stagnant Blood to descend. Cyathula root also protects the Liver and Kidney Yin, while Siberian motherwort herb restores communication between the Heart and the Kidney, facilitating the descent of Heart Yang.

Polygonum multiflorum stem and Poria with wood root calm the Spirit, while Loranthus twig and Eucommia bark both consolidate the descending Yang back into the Kidney and simultaneously conserve its Yin.

Calm Repose effectively addresses Yin deficiency, but does not contain herbs that specifically tonify the Yin. Consequently, it is important to concurrently use a formula that tonifies Blood or Yin for animals that have a strong underlying Yin deficiency. Glehnia and Rehmannia Combination (Yi Guan Jian) or APR Nourishing Formula (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) are excellent complements to this formula.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSQuells Liver Yang rising and Internal Wind secondary to Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency.

ABOuT THE HERBSThe design of Cool the Blood (Qing Ying Tang) remains faithful to the intent of the original formula, which is to expel Heat invasions from the very deepest (Ying and Blood) layers to the most superficial (Wei and Qi) layers. By protecting the Yin, the formula rehydrates and mobilizes the Heat-desiccated Blood, allowing the body to cool itself, once more being able to circulate Blood to the exterior.

Cool the Blood contains most of the herbs used in the original formula, Qing Ying Tang, including Scrophularia root, raw Rehmannia root, Ophiopogon tuber, Honeysuckle flower, Forsythia fruit, Coptis rhizome and Lopatherum herb.

Honeysuckle flower, Forsythia fruit and Coptis rhizome expel Heat invasion from the Qi and Wei layers, Lopatherum herb helps cool the Heart Fire, relieving agitation, while Chinese salvia root and rhizome cools and mobilizes the Blood. Gardenia fruit clears Heat from the Heart and calms the Shen while Chinese red peony root cools and moves the Blood. Chinese rhubarb rhizome and root is added for its abilities to clear Heat from the Qi level and move stagnant Blood.

Finally, Scrophularia root and raw Rehmannia root clear Heat and protect the Yin; along with Ophiopogon tuber, raw Rehmannia root also has a potent nourishing effect on Yin.

ABOuT THE HERBSDispel Stasis in the Palace of Blood (Jia Wei Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang) has similar indications to those of Blood’s Palace (Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang). It is an augmented version of Blood’s Palace, with the addition of three Blood-moving herbs – Sparganium rhizome, vinegar prepared Zedoary rhizome and Turmeric root tuber. Animals will show symptoms of Blood Deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation and Blood stasis.

Bupleurum root, Chinese red peony root, dry fried Bitter orange mature fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome constitute a sub-formula known as Four Cold Extremities Formula (Si Ni San), which is the quintessential Liver Qi-mover first recorded in The Discussion of Cold Febrile Disease, ca. 500 A.D.

Dong quai root, raw Rehmannia root and Sichuan lovage rhizome are three of the four herbs in Four Substances (Si Wu Tang). Four Substances is considered the quintessential Blood tonic of Chinese Herbology, despite being developed relatively recently in The Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition in 1742. Carthamus flower and dry fried peeled Peach seed further invigorate Blood. Platycodon root guides the formula up to the Upper Burner and Cyathula root mobilizes stagnant Blood downwards. ABOuT THE HERBSDry Derma Relief (Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin) is directly based upon Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin (Four Materials Eliminate Wind Decoction), first described by Wu Qian in Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition in 1742. The formula addresses Wind Heat invasions targeting the skin with concurrent Blood deficiency.

Dry Derma Relief is most commonly given to dogs because of their apparent predisposition to Blood deficiency. The formula has a slightly increased content of Wind-dispersing herbs relative to Blood tonics from those found in the original classical formula. Bupleurum root helps to mobilize the stagnant Liver Qi secondary to Liver Blood deficiency while expelling Wind Heat invasions. Dictamnus root, Chinese mint herb, Schizonepeta herb, Siler root and Pubescent angelica root all expel Wind invasion.

The Blood tonics in this formula are those found in Four Substances (Si Wu Tang), the quintessential Blood tonic formula. Historically, the herbs making up Four Substances are raw Rehmannia root, Dong quai root, Chinese white peony root and Sichuan lovage rhizome. Chinese red peony root is used here in place of Chinese white peony root to provide added Blood-cooling effects. Red jujube fruit has been added to provide more Blood-tonifying effects.

ABOuT THE HERBSEucommia and Rehmannia Combination is You Gui Wan (Restore the Right Pill), first published in 1624 in The Collected Treatises of Zhang Jing Yue. In Chinese physiology, Yang is viewed as stored in the right Kidney and is also known as the Gate of Vitality, and You Gui Wan is an unmitigated tonic of Kidney Yang and Essence. It draws inspiration, however, from the more moderate Rehmannia Eight Combination (Ba Wei Di Huang Wan) of a thousand years earlier by using several of the same herbs.

The use of prepared Aconite root, Chinese cinnamon bark, prepared Rehmannia root, Asiatic cornelian cherry and Chinese yam rhizome is drawn from Rehmannia Eight Combination. Prepared Aconite root and Chinese cinnamon bark warm the Kidney Yang, while prepared Rehmannia root, Asiatic cornelian cherry and Chinese yam rhizome tonify Yin and Blood and preserve Essence.

Eucommia bark tonifies Kidney Yang. Dong quai root assists with the nourishment of Liver Blood, while Lycium fruit tonifies Liver and Kidney Yin to relieve occasional low back and knees weakness and stiffness. Psoralea fruit has been added to the original version of Eucommia and Rehmannia Combination, and together with Chinese dodder seed, it tonifies Kidney Yang.

Four MarvelsSi Miao SanDamp Heat Accumulation in the Lower Burner

INGREDIENTSENGLISH PHARMACEuTICAL PINYINCang-zhu atractylodes rhizome Atractylodis rhizoma Cang zhuAchyranthes root Achyranthis bidentatae radix Huai niu xiJob’s tears seed Coicis semen Yi yi renPhellodendron bark Phellodendri cortex Huang bai

ABOuT THE HERBSFour Marvels (Si Miao San) is an augmentation of Two Marvels Powder (Er Miao San). It was designed to address the accumulation of Damp Heat in the Lower Burner. The Damp may be internal or external in origin; Damp can only invade from the environment if it is being manufactured internally through dysfunction of the Spleen. Once Damp has been present in the body for a long period, it causes the generation of Heat, and becomes known as Damp Heat. The original version, published a hundred years ago, contains fifty percent more Phellodendron bark than Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome, resulting in a strongly cooling but intensely bitter formula. Reducing Phellodendron bark levels to slightly less than the content of Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome preserves the intent of the formula, but provides greater Spleen support.

The addition of Job’s tears seed and Achryanthes root creates Four Marvels. Job’s tears seed supports the effects of the original formula by draining Damp, and its bland taste provides additional support to the Spleen. Achryanthes root acts as a Blood-mover, extending the benefits of Four Marvels.

Supporting the Spleen is vital, since the primary source of Damp Heat in companion animals is too high a carbohydrate content and glycemic load in the diet. Animals that are significantly aided by Four Marvels also benefit greatly from low starch and low glycemic index foods. Four Marvels also has an astringing effect on fluid loss caused by the dehydrating influence of long-standing Damp Heat accumulation. This same astringing effect counters the drying effects of the other three herbs, making Four Marvels safe for long-term use, and a widely used formula.

pain or weakness of the lower limbs.

ABOuT THE HERBSThe primary purpose of Free the Sinews (Yi Yi Ren Tang) is to disperse Dampness with a gentle emphasis on Spleen and Kidney Qi tonification. Chinese cinnamon twig and White peony root release the Tai Yang and expel invading Wind Damp. White peony root supports the actions of Dong quai root in moving Blood. Chinese cinnamon twig boosts peripheral circulation. Pubescent angelica root helps in alleviating back and neck stagnation.

Job’s tears seed has an important dual effect in this formula. The predisposition of the animal to Damp invasion comes from internal Damp accumulation due to faulty Spleen function. Job’s tears seed is used here to leech accumulated Damp out of the body via the urinary tract while providing mild Spleen support; and when used in tandem with warm pungent herbs like Chinese cinnamon twig, it helps expel Wind Damp from the Exterior.

Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome serves to expel Wind Cold Damp from the joints, as well as from the Spleen itself. Lastly, Dong quai root in tandem with White peony root moves the Blood. It also tonifies Blood where it is lacking due to Spleen deficiency. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies Spleen and Stomach while harmonizing the formula as a whole.

ABOuT THE HERBSGlehnia and Rehmannia Combination (Yi Guan Jian) was first published as One Linking Decoction (Yi Guan Jian) in The Continuation of Famous Physician’s Cases Organized by Categories, written by Wei Zhi-Xiu in 1770. The phrase “One Linking” refers to the formulas ability to deal with a variety of disparate patterns, all stemming from the single diagnosis of Liver Blood and Yin deficiency with Qi stagnation.

The structure of Glehnia and Rehmannia Combination is relatively simple. Lycium fruit and Dong quai root nourish Liver Blood while raw Rehmannia root clears Empty Heat. Raw Rehmannia root also ensures adequate Kidney Yin. Glehnia root moistens the Stomach Yin, and Ophiopogon tuber moistens the Lung Yin when they have become injured by the combined effects of stasis Heat and Empty Heat. Melia fruit is the sole bitter element among all the sweet-tasting tonics. It serves to regulate stagnant Liver Qi, and also ensures the formula is not too cloying to a compromised Middle Burner.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSTonifies Liver Blood and Yin, spreads Liver Qi.

PHYSICAL INDICATIONS• Occasional separation anxiety, fear

ABOuT THE HERBSHappy Wanderer (Xiao Yao San) is the quintessential formula addressing Liver Qi stagnation and Spleen Qi deficiency. To this day, Xiao Yao San is the most widely used Chinese herbal formula in the world. It is a well-balanced formula that can be used long-term.

In this formula, Bupleurum root invigorates peripheral circulation by moving stagnant Liver Qi, while Dong quai root and White peony root bolster and move Liver Blood. Chinese mint herb clears stasis Heat from the Liver channel. White atractylodes rhizome, Poria and Chinese licorice root and rhizome constitute three of the ingredients found in Four Gentlemen Decoction (Si Jun Zi Tang). It functions to support normal digestion and absorption by draining and drying Damp from the Spleen and Stomach while supporting Spleen and Lung Qi formation. Altogether, the ingredients harmonize the Liver and Spleen to support the smooth flow of Qi and a healthy digestive system.

ABOuT THE HERBSHarmonize the Qi (Xiao Chai Hu Tang) addresses the complex patterns that are represented by an invasion that is half in the Exterior and half in the Interior.

Cool and pungent Bupleurum root moves Yang energy upward and outward, while bitter cold Chinese skullcap root descends Yang inwards and downwards. This dual and seemingly self-defeating influence is typical in harmonizing formulas such as Harmonize the Qi.

By normalizing Yang movement, regardless of how it is constrained, Harmonize the Qi has acquired its reputation of safety. Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, Red jujube fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome address any Qi deficiency that has occurred following the failure of Yang to return. Ginger cured Pinellia rhizome transforms any Phlegm obstructions of the Triple Burner that interfere with Yang movement. Ginger rhizome helps ginger cured Pinellia rhizome in this regard and harmonizes the Middle Burner of the body to direct rebellious Qi downward.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSExpels invasion of the Shao Yang level, promotes the smooth flow of Qi, normalizes Yang movement, tonifies Qi, transforms Phlegm.

ABOuT THE HERBSHarmonize the Stomach (Ping Wei San) was first described in the Imperial Grace Formulary of the Tai Ping Era almost a thousand years ago in about 1085 A.D. The formula is designed to address Damp Cold stagnation in the Spleen and Stomach, secondary to Spleen Yang deficiency. The Damp accumulation obstructs the normal movement of Stomach Qi in the Middle Burner, causing it to rebel upward. Over-consumption of raw or cold foods is often labeled as the underlying cause of this pattern in humans. In dogs and cats, it appears to be the over-consumption of high starch grain-laden diets.

Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome and Magnolia bark both dry Damp. Magnolia bark additionally disperses stasis from the abdomen while Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome warms the Spleen and Stomach. Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit assists in moving the Qi of the abdomen while also “cutting” the Damp. Ginger rhizome and Red jujube fruit tonify the Stomach and Spleen respectively, without being cloying. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies the Spleen and Stomach Qi, while also harmonizing the formula as a whole.

ABOuT THE HERBSLift the Qi (Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang) was first published in the 13th century work, Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach, written by Li Dongyuan. Its incorporation of Four Gentlemen Decoction (Si Jun Zi Tang) speaks to its Spleen Qi or digestion-supporting effects.

Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, White atractylodes rhizome, Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome constitute four of the Six GentlePets (Liu Jun Zi Tang) formula, a quintessential Spleen Qi tonic. Astragalus root, together with White atractylodes rhizome, boosts Wei Qi production, supporting a healthy immune system. Dong quai root nourishes Liver Blood that has been weakened by flagging Spleen Qi. Bupleurum root moves Liver Qi that has become stagnant from the lack of Blood. Cimicifuga rhizome also helps mobilize this stagnant Qi, which has sunk down to and become trapped in the lower abdomen.

ABOuT THE HERBSLiver Support Formula (Bu Gan Tang) is derived directly from Bu Gan Tang (Tonify the Liver Decoction), a formula which has been in use for over 250 years since its original publication by Wu Qian in 1742 in Golden Mirror, the Medical Tradition (Yi Zong Jin Jian).

Empty Heat and Yang rising symptoms may not be as prominent in animals benefiting from this formula. Yin deficiency may be present but is perhaps only hinted at by a tendency to weight loss despite good appetite and normal stools. Liver Support Formula is chiefly a dog formula, given that dogs are more prone to Liver Blood deficiency.

White peony root, Sichuan lovage rhizome, Dong quai root and prepared Rehmannia root constitute Four Substances (Si Wu Tang), developed almost six hundred years earlier to tonify Liver Blood, and is a part of this formula.

Chinese quince fruit was added to relax occasional muscle spasms through increasing peripheral Blood circulation, while the rest of the herbs nourish the Heart. Sweet-tasting Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies Heart Qi. Sour-tasting Ophiopogon tuber addresses Heart Yin deficiency. Sour-tasting dry fried Sour jujube seed supports Yin. Overall, the mixing of sweet and sour herbs has a potent Yin-tonifying and nourishing effect.

ABOuT THE HERBSApart from the addition of one herb, Yu jin (Tumeric root tuber), Open the Liver Canals (Xiao Chai Hu Jia Yu Jin Tang) has the same composition as Harmonize the Qi (Xiao Chai Hu Tang), one of the world’s oldest, most important and widely used herbal formulas.

In Open the Liver Canals, Bupleurum root and licorice cured Pinellia rhizome are decreased from their levels in the traditional version to allow relatively more Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome and Chinese skullcap root. High levels of Bupleurum root are not needed for a good effect, and the Phlegm addressed by the licorice cured Pinellia rhizome is not prominent in many animal cases. The higher levels of Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, on the other hand, allow Open the Liver Canals to better address Qi deficiency, while added Chinese skullcap root increases the calming effects of the formula. The other modification is the inclusion of Turmeric root tuber, which provides an extra Qi- and Blood-moving effect to the formula, particularly in the vicinity of the Liver.

Cool and pungent Bupleurum root expels invasions lodged in the Shao Yang. Bitter cold Chinese skullcap root descends Yang from the Upper Burner to where it can reintegrate with the Lower Burner. Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, Red jujube fruit and Chinese licorice root and rhizome address any Qi deficiency that has occurred following the failure of Yang and Yin to merge; Licorice cured Pinellia rhizome transforms any Phlegm obstructions of the Triple Burner that have stopped this merging. Ginger rhizome harmonizes the Middle Burner, helping to direct rebellious Qi downward.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSHarmonizes the Shao Yang level, relieves obstruction of the Triple Burner that interferes with the normal descent of Qi, producing stasis in the upper abdomen.

PHYSICAL INDICATIONS• Occasional fullness in the chest,

heartburn, nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite, abdominal disharmonies.

ABOuT THE HERBSRehmannia Eight Combination is the literal translation of Ba Wei Di Huang Wan, also known as Precious Golden Tonify the Qi Pill (Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan). This formula was another lasting contribution of Zhang Zhong-Jing of the Han dynasty, and was first published in about 500 A.D. in Essentials of the Golden Cabinet. Qi is life force, and is generated through the mingling of Yin and Yang; Rehmannia Eight Combination contains tonics for both. The Yang tonics also add warmth to the lower burner, assisting the Bladder in water transportation.

The first three herbs are Yin tonics. Prepared Rehmannia root has an overall warming effect, and nourishes Kidney Yin and Blood. Chinese yam rhizome astringes Essence, helping to avoid dryness in the Kidneys, Lung and Middle Burner. Asiatic cornelian cherry nourishes Liver Blood and Yin, and helps astringe Kidney Essence leakage.

Balancing the potential cloying effects of these three Yin tonics are three moving and draining herbs. Asian water plantain rhizome promotes urination. Poria provides gentle Spleen support and leeches Damp from the Middle Burner where Chinese yam rhizome acts. Tree peony root bark clears Heat accumulating in the Liver, secondary to stasis. Asiatic cornelian cherry warms and astringes. Chinese cinnamon bark and prepared Aconite root warm the Kidneys and dispel Cold in the Lower Burner.

ABOuT THE HERBSRestore Restraint (Sang Piao Xiao San) addresses a disharmony between the Kidney and the Heart. Its action is two-fold – to harmonize the Kidney and Heart, thereby calming the Spirit, and to restrain the leakage of fluids.

Dragon bone, Poria with wood root, Polygala root and Altaica rhizome calm the Spirit and ease restlessness. Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome tonifies the Qi, while Dong quai root tonifies the Blood. Mantis egg-case and Palmleaf raspberry fruit astringe the leakage of fluids. Polygala root and Poria with wood root direct the focus of the formula towards the Kidney and Bladder.

ABOuT THE HERBSSettle the Yang (Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang) has at its core Harmonize the Qi (Xiao Chai Hu Tang), which has a balanced effect on normalizing the movement of Yang energy in and out of the body core. It is used to restore circulation within the Triple Burner, and the movement back and forth of Yang energy by the Shao Yang layer of the body. Harmonize the Qi also directly supplements Qi that has been damaged from prolonged or severe Yin Yang separation.

In Settle the Yang, herbs have been added that bring the focus of the formula strictly on Yang internalization. A failure of Yang energy to internalize properly, or to move outwards too exuberantly, seems more common in the spring and fall months. Stratification occurs, with Yang being trapped in the outer layers of the body and Yin consolidated in the interior.

These herbs give the formula a more one-sided Yang internalizing effect. The heavy mineral elements of Dragon bone and Oyster shell sink Yang energy into the interior without depleting it. Chinese rhubarb rhizome and root purges Fire downwards and inwards, while relieving agitation and anxiety. Poria is calming, and teams with Chinese cinnamon twig to mobilize fluids in the body and support normal urine production. Chinese cinnamon twig also helps expel any internalized Cold invasion back outwards through the Tai Yang layer.

ABOuT THE HERBSSix GentlePets (Liu Jun Zi Tang) combines Er Chen Tang with Four Gentlemen Decoction (Si Jun Zi Tang). The two ingredients from Er Chen Tang are Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit and ginger cured Pinellia rhizome – two herbs that act together to transform Phlegm and descend Stomach Qi, thus relieving occasional nausea, vomiting, indigestion and bloating.

Four Gentlemen Decoction contains White Asian ginseng root and rhizome and White atractylodes rhizome, both of which assist the Spleen in completely transforming food into the fundamental substances, thereby avoiding the production of Damp. White Asian ginseng root and rhizome also is a potent Qi tonic. Poria leeches Damp that has already accumulated, and further supports the Spleen. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies the Stomach Qi.

Combined together as Six GentlePets, the two formulas provide relatively complete support for the Spleen and Stomach as well as vigorously augmenting the Qi of the body as a whole.

ABOuT THE HERBSSpleen Support Formula (Wei Ling Tang), was first recorded in The Teachings of Dan Xi by Zhu Zhen-Heng in 1481. Spleen Support Formula addresses Spleen Qi deficiency with secondary Dampness accumulation. Rather than being overly tonifying like Six GentlePets (Liu Jun Zi Tang), it strengthens the Spleen simply by warming and drying it. Since Spleen deficiency is the primary pattern affecting cats, Spleen Support Formula is one of the most important formulas for cats.

Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome and Magnolia bark both dry Damp. Magnolia bark additionally disperses stasis from the abdomen, while Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome warms the Spleen and Stomach. Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit assists in moving the Qi of the abdomen while also “cutting” the Damp. Ginger rhizome and Red jujube fruit tonify the Stomach and Spleen, respectively, without being cloying. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies the Spleen and Stomach Qi while also harmonizing the formula as a whole.

Asian water plantain rhizome, Japanese helwingia pith and Poria drain Damp and promote urination. White atractylodes rhizome tonifies the Spleen to reduce the production of Damp. Chinese cinnamon bark warms the Yang of the Middle Burner and supports healthy production and discharge of urine by the Bladder.

ABOuT THE HERBSThe focus of Subdue Internal Wind (Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang) is to purge accumulated Wind and Phlegm, and to address the underlying Spleen Qi deficiency that is the root of the pattern. Gastrodia rhizome transforms Phlegm and extinguishes Wind. Ginger cured Pinellia rhizome dries Damp, transforms Phlegm, and directs rebellious Qi downward. Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit assists in restoring the normal descent of Qi and the transformation of Phlegm. Poria supports the Spleen, reducing the formation of Damp. Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome tonifies the Qi, while Chinese licorice root and rhizome harmonizes the formula and gently tonifies the Qi. White atractylodes rhizome provides further Spleen support, and dries and dispels Damp in the Middle Burner.

The following herbs have been added to further strengthen the formula’s secondary functions of draining Damp, clearing Heat and preventing stasis. Asian water plantain rhizome drains Damp via the Bladder, while Phellodendron bark and Chinese skullcap root clear Heat that has accumulated. Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome dispels and dries Damp in the Middle Burner, while dry fried Barley sprout and medicated leaven support normal Stomach function and help to prevent food stasis.

ABOuT THE HERBSIn Chinese Herbology, Heat is passed from the Liver to the Heart. Subdue Liver Fire (Long Dan Xie Gan Tang) thus contains both Liver- and Heart-cooling herbs, specifically Chinese gentian root and rhizome, Chinese skullcap root and Gardenia fruit. Where this excess Heat or Yang energy has damaged Blood and Yin, the formula contains two herbs – Chinese skullcap root and Dong quai root – to address this. In classic versions of the formula, only small amounts of these herbs are used, but dogs seem to require higher amounts to fully benefit from the formula. Raw Rehmannia root assists these two herbs in clearing Heat and protecting the Yin.

Plantain seed, Asian water plantain rhizome and Poria with wood root drain the Damp that is causing the Heat accumulation.

Bupleurum root and Dong quai root prevent Qi and Blood stasis, whether from the drying cooling action of the formula or the intense Heat already present. Bupleurum root also provides a cooling yet Yang-invigorating effect that helps adapt or mesh the strong cooling effect of the formula with the intense Heat affecting these animals. Chinese licorice root and rhizome assists in protecting the Spleen, clears Heat and harmonizes the other herbs in the formula.

ABOuT THE HERBSSublime Joint Formula (Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin) is inspired by Sublime Formula for Sustaining Life, first described over 500 years ago by Bi Li-Zhai in Revised Formulas for Women. Sublime Joint Formula is designed to expel invasion in the channels, causing Qi or Blood stasis in the superficial layers of the body. Prolonged stasis generates Heat that contributes to the transformation of the trapped invasion into Phlegm Fire.

The formula serves to transform Phlegm obstructions and expel Wind while simultaneously clearing Heat. Dong quai root tail, Frankincense resin and Myrrh resin move the Blood. Trichosanthes root and Honeysuckle flower clear Heat and transform Phlegm. Fragrant angelica root assists in dispersing clumping accumulations. Gleditsia spine dispels Phlegm Fire and opens the channels. Dong quai root tail, Chinese red peony root, Frankincense resin and Myrrh resin move Blood obstructed by Damp Heat and alleviate stagnation. Tangerine dried rind of mature fruit moves Qi stagnating from Phlegm accumulation.

CHINESE HERBAL ACTIONSExpels Phlegm Fire invasions that invade the channels causing Qi or Blood stasis, clears Fire that is accumulating in the Qi and Blood layers.

ABOuT THE HERBSIt is a testament to the genius of Sun Si Miao, its creator, that a formula as complex as Supple Spine (Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang) is still in popular use. It is an even greater testament to his perspicacity that it contains two smaller formulas that would become among the most utilized herbal formulas. These two smaller formulas are Four Substances (Si Wu Tang), the quintessential Blood tonic formula, and Four Gentlemen Decoction (Si Jun Zi Tang), the quintessential Qi tonic formula. Three of the herbs of Four Substances are found in this formula. They are White peony root, prepared Rehmannia root and Sichuan lovage rhizome. The herbs in Four Gentlemen Decoction represented here include Chinese red ginseng root and rhizome, Chinese licorice root and rhizome and Poria.

The Kidney-tonifying herbs of Supple Spine include Eucommia bark, Loranthus herb and Cyathula root. Eucommia astringes and tonifies Kidney Yang, while Cyathula root astringes and tonifies Kidney Yin. Loranthus herb expels Wind Cold Damp while supporting the Kidneys.

Curculigo rhizome, Pubescent angelica, Large-leaf gentian root and Siler root expel Wind Cold Damp from the channels, allowing Blood and Qi to course to the body periphery.

Supple Spine retains much of the original architecture, but has some minor variations. Notopterygium root and rhizome has been added to extend the Wind-dispersing effects of the formula to the upper back and neck, instead of just the low back. Use of Cyathula root in place of Achryanthes and Dong Quai confers a Blood-moving effect while still nourishing the tendons. Prepared Rehmannia root is used in place of fresh Rehmannia because of its extra Blood-tonifying and warming effects. Curculigo rhizome is used in place of Asarum to dispel Wind Cold Damp, while further supporting the Kidneys and the bones.OFFERED IN 250 MG. TABLETS, 500 MG. ABOuT THE HERBSThree Seeds Combination (San Ren Tang) was first described in the Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases written by Wu Ju-Tong in 1798. It is one of the quintessential cat formulas, as well as a main formula to address the ubiquitous pattern of Damp Heat in small animals.

The formula is designed to unblock the descent of Lung Qi, transform and dry Damp in the Middle Burner and Stomach, and drain Damp down to and out of the Lower Burner. The three herbs that fulfill this function in the formula are Apricot seed, Job’s tears seed and Chinese cardamom fruit. Apricot seed descends Lung Qi and Large Intestine Qi, helping to relieve cough and constipation. Job’s tears seed drains Damp from the Lower Burner and provides Spleen support. Chinese cardamom fruit transforms Damp and dries the Spleen and Stomach.

The other herbs assist in facilitating the downward movement of Qi and fluids. Magnolia bark and ginger cured Pinellia rhizome address distention of the abdomen due to Damp and Phlegm accumulation, and reorder the normal descent of Stomach and abdominal Qi. Japanese helwingia pith, Lopatherum herb and Talc promote urination and clear Heat. Lopatherum herb cools the Heart in particular.

The ability of the formula to address Damp Heat is reminiscent of Four Marvels (Si Miao San), but Three Seeds Combination is designed for animals where the Heat signs are not yet strongly developed.

ABOuT THE HERBSurinary Support Formula (Pang Guang Zhu Yu Tang) is based on two classic formulas, Dispel Stasis in the Lower Palace (Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang) and Wu Yao Tang. Wu Yao Tang moves Qi in the lower abdomen, while the former moves Blood. Since Qi is the motive force for Blood, pairing the two formulas creates a potent synergy.

The herbs borrowed from Wu Yao Tang include Lindera tuber, prepared Cyperus rhizome and Dong quai root tail. Lindera tuber and prepared Cyperus rhizome strongly move abdominal Qi while Dong quai root tail tonifies and moves Blood. In urinary Support Formula, however, only the tips of Dong quai are used, resulting in a more pronounced Blood-moving effect and little tonic effect.

The herbs borrowed from Dispel Stasis in the Lower Palace include prepared Corydalis yanhusuo tuber, Dong quai root tail, Sichuan lovage rhizome, Chinese red peony root, Bulrush pollen and Myrrh resin. All of these herbs are Blood-movers, with prepared Corydalis yanhusuo tuber having a reputation for being an especially good mover. Bulrush pollen removes Blood stasis and facilitates healthy Bladder functions. Chinese red peony root moves and cools Blood, but also protects it from being scattered by the strong moving effect of the rest of the formula. The other three herbs in the formula perform multiple functions. Plantain herb drains any lingering Damp Heat from the Bladder. Vaccarria seed moves Blood but also drains Damp and Dampness accumulations. Pyrrosia leaf supports healthy Bladder functions and clears Damp heat.

For animals with strong symptoms of Blood stasis and Damp Heat, pair with Four Marvels.
