Appleton West Girls Basketball Team in 1974 Appleton West Girls Basketball Team in 2019 On June 23, 1972, President Richard Nixon

signed the Higher Education Act of 1972. Title IX of this congressional act bars sex bias

in athletics and other activities at colleges receiving federal assistance. Title IX, the landmark gender equity law passed as part of the Education Amendment of 1972, banned sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. Its protection would open doors for girls and women in admission, academic majors, teaching positions, vocation programs, and individual classes, and would help ensure equal access and treatment. Yet, despite its broad aims and application, Title IX is more famous for its impact on expanding opportunities for women and girls in sports. In 1972 there were only 300,000 women and girls playing college and high school sports in the United States. Female athletes received 2% of college athlete budgets while athletic scholarships for women were virtually non-existent. In 2012, the 40th anniversary of Title IX’s passage, the number of girls participating in high school sports nationwide had risen tenfold, to more than 3 million. Today more than 3.5 million girls currently are involved in high school sports, and more than 500,000 women are competing in college sports, six times as many as in 1972. According to the Womens Sport Foundation, one in every five girls in the United States plays sports. Before passage of Title IX, that number had been one in 27.

Leadership, perseverance, teamwork, dedication… These are all lifelong skills I learned from sports that have helped

create the person I am today.

Sports have been one of the most positive and impactful parts of my life. I will never forget my first day of track practice. I signed up a week late and the coach told me to come on out anyway. I was so nervous I wasn’t going to fit in. However, from that first step through the door, I knew I made the right choice. Immediately, I felt welcome and was accepted by the team. You could say the rest is history. Sports are where I found my voice and what moved me to become a leader both on and off the field.

The skills I learned in sports helped me with my career choice to become a teacher and continue to help me in my daily life. My involvement in sports has helped create a passion I hope to inspire in the athletes that I now coach on the Appleton West Track and Field team.

By Stephanie Gallagher, AW Class of ‘11

As a West female student-athlete from 1999-2003,

being a swimmer, dancer, and track & field athlete opened doors and provided me with numerous opportunities to shape me into the person I am today. My calling within Special Education is more

to me than just a career but getting the opportunity to go overseas to teach and coach; that all started from some of the awesome coaches I had here at Appleton West. Under Gayle Beuthien and Carl Gardner, both coaches and teachers in the field of special education, I found encouragement and positive challenges in developing my passion for helping others achieve their own goals and define their success in the classroom and in athletic endeavors. At West, I experienced how the STUDENT comes before the ATHLETE which helped to set me up for a successful college career at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. As a former member of AWK swim team, never having participated in an outside “club” team, I am thankful for the hard work and dedication it taught me as a member of the team. Being a part of a life-long skill like swimming, which can be done anywhere with water; from cliff swims in Lake Superior to coastal swims around the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. I am so thankful for the many skills I learned to make me into a healthy human. As a one-time member of the AW

Dance Team, I learned about taking risks and trying new things, even if those skills turn out to be skills that are clearly not strengths. I was able to give it a go and learn how rhythm might just not be for me. I learned it’s okay to fail and not be good at something and appreciate that it gave me the opportunity to then find other passions in life- like snowboarding, which then opened doors to go to places like Nagano Japan and experience some of the world’s greatest slopes keeping me active even during these cold dark winters. My most favorite memories from my time here at West were from the Track & Field team. The relationships I formed from my time here at Appleton West have led to friendships that travel the world on scuba diving trips to places like Fiji and even helping me secure a job here once I returned to Appleton from my life of overseas education, after a quick exit in Moscow, Russia with not a single plan thought out. If there’s one thing I learned, life is 100% about the relationships you form and time and effort spent in maintaining them. Appreciate all those in your life who help you become the best version of yourself and take all opportunities to make the world, and your community a better place for all. My life once summarized by an Israeli Military Interrogator as “Someone who just travels the world teaching students....” sounded like a pretty awesome life to me, one that I am so thankful for as starting adulthood from here at Appleton West, as a female student-athlete.

Coach Huth currently teaches and coaches in AASD.

“When Ella decided to try out wrestling her sophomore year we

were not surprised at all. She’s always taken the road less traveled and being the only female on the team was no exception to that. Ella put in the time and effort in the wrestling room and

earned the respect of her coaches and teammates. Ella is a quiet,

sweet young lady but get her on the mat and she’s a beast. In December of 2021, Ella graduated from Fort

Benning as an infantry soldier, once again paving the way for females.

We are so proud of her!”
