1CommunicationTo keep the relationship alive and successful communication is key. Schedule times to either call or video call each other. It is understandable if they are busy, as we become busy with our lives, but dropping a text whenever it is possible keeps that fulfilment and value.

4Gifts In The PostThese don’t need to be anything too expensive - something small such as their favourite chocolate or socks will surprise them. It will bring a smile to their face and make them feel valued from the effort you have made, and prove how much you mean to them.

2Schedule To Meet UpWhen you see your partner in person you appreciate them more and you are more likely to see a future with them. Visits don’t have too long, as shorter trips can be meaningful, and it does prove to your partner how much you mean to them by making that extra effort.

5Watching Movies TogetherWho says you can’t spend time together? Watching movies together by video chat is a great way to spend time together. No communication needs to be made but feeling your partner’s presence creates a special bond, and a site called Rabb.it makes this possible, as you can watch anything with anyone. > Amara Iqbal

Get To Know Their New FriendsIf you and your partner are both going to different universities try getting to know their new friends, talk to the people they talk to, add them on their socials and even plan night outs with them; it is a great way to keep in touch with your partner’s social life.

American rapper, singer and songwriter Montero Lamar Hill, aka ‘Lil Nas X’, has

come to worldwide attention with his breakout country rap single ‘Old Town Road’, the longest-running number one in American chart history.

The song gained it’s initial viral popularity through the video sharing app TikTok and eventually ended up making it’s way to number on the

Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for a whole nineteen weeks. ‘7’, his debut EP which was released on 21 June also included his second single ‘Panini’ which as of now is on Rolling Stone’s Top 100.

The 20-year-old was born in the small town of Lithia Springs, Georgia just outside Atlanta. Nas X, initially started promoting his early music by building an online fanbase

as an internet personality and using his instagram ‘meme page’ to reach a wider audience.

Once Nas X released his single ‘Old Town Road’, he made several memes about the songs and used his fanbase to help it grow. Eventually, his promotion methods helped the song reach several TikTok users who created a challenge called the ‘#Yeehaw Challenge. This garnered a larger audience from different

demographics, these users were getting dressed as wranglers and cowgirls and using the song in

the background.Soon ‘Old Town Road’ ended up

on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and eventually climbed to number one. After a lot of controversy Billboard ended up removing the song from the Country music chart due to its’s music composition not being that of a country song.

Speaking about its removal to Time magazine, he said: “I believe

whenever you’re trying something new, it’s always going to get some bad reception.”

However the song was remixed to feature major country music artist Billy Ray Cyrus. This really helped to add an authentic ‘country’ feel to the song due to the style of Cyurs’s vocals. Nas X ended up breaking Drake’s record for the most US streams in just one week.

Nas X recently came out as gay to his fans and the rest of the world over Twitter, on the last day of Pride month. Unfortunately there is a lack of black people in the country scene and a lack of gay people in the hip-hop scene. While this does make Nas X an anomaly, it also makes him a role model for new generations. It is giving them the realisation that they can chase their dreams regardless of their colour, gender or sexuality.

Country rap star, Lil Nas X has garnered a global audience from his hit single ‘Old Town Road’. Shayan Shakir explores his musical and social media success.

It’s time to stop running education like a business and create a National Education Service akin to the NHS, says new NUS President Zamzam Ibrahim.

REPORT CHANGE THE SYSTEM

If you’re not familiar with your students’ union have a walk in today and you’ll find

some amazing things. You’ll find student groups doing everything from archery to zoology, you’ll find people who want to give you advice on getting the best from your course, and you’ll always find groups of students who just want to have a good time. You’ll find friends for life, a home away from home, and a place you’ll feel comfortable.

It wasn’t so long ago that I was a student. At the University of Salford, I found some of my best friends, I studied a course that I loved, and I also started out on my journey to become NUS President. It’s funny to think that I started out studying Finance and graduated as President of NUS.

This was only possible because of the profound impact my students’ union had on my life. We are this corner of civil society where we have collectivism built in, nearly every student is a

member of their students’ unions, nearly every students’ union is a member of NUS, and collectively we have millions of people working together to make the world better for students.

During my time at NUS I’ve met with a lot of students. I’ve travelled all over the UK and everywhere I go I see examples of how education can transform people’s lives but every time I go away I am left

with the feeling that something isn’t right.

For every joyful graduation I hear from a student who is panicked by debt. For every student who has gone back to College I hear from a student who can’t afford the bus fare in. For every student who has had the promise of social mobility

fulfilled there is another student who asks me whether it was all worth it.

If this story was in one or two places you might put it down to bad luck or coincidence but this is across the

UK. It’s not because of bad people or bad practices, it’s because of a bad approach to education.

The problem is that we’ve bought into the idea that education can only be run like a business. The dominant idea is that it ‘produces’ students, it has a bottom line, and has to squeeze profits where it can. The problem with this is that with every market there has to be winners and losers and the costs of

losing are just too great. The cost is bared by the 94% of care leavers who don’t go into higher education, the black students who face a 26% attainment gap, the 4 million people in work poverty, and the thousands and thousands of people who are shut out of education completely.

The market is broken and it’s

time for something new. It’s time for a National Education Service.

Over the next 6 months I’ll be building the case on how we can win a funded, life-long, and accessible education service, so in 3 years the NUS will win public support for a National Education Service, and in 10 years we will deliver one. Our ambition is nothing less than to build a system akin to the NHS for education.

It might be ambitious but every single student I meet deserves an ambitious national union. We’ve got a big year ahead and I can’t wait to get going.

Billie Eilish is the first artist born this millennium to achieve a number one album, and she did so by just being herself, as Amara Iqbal explores.

By the age of fifteen Billie Eilish had already released her first song, called ‘ocean

eyes’. It was a song that had been created by accident, but it became a breakthrough smash, clocking up more than 10 million hits. Billie’s career had begun.

The song was written by her elder brother, Finneas O’Connell, who has his own band The Slightlys, and asked his sister to record the song in her voice. It was intended to be used in a dance routine by Billie but the siblings uploaded the track to SoundCloud and it went viral. By 2018 it had sold over a million copies in the United States.

There’s no denying that Billie has a little taste for darkness in her songs. While ‘ocean eyes’ is about love and sounds like a lullaby, since

then releases such as ‘bellyache’ and ‘bury a friend’ have much darker lyrics, as Billie picks up a psychopathic persona where she has killed her friends and dumped their bodies.

Billie has said that when she and her brother write music, they enjoy getting into these psychopathic characters, because it gives them that opportunity to explore new spaces.

“You can put yourself in a character or a situation you would not normally be in. You don't have to be in love to write a love song. You don't have to kill somebody to write a song about killing

somebody. It's like jumping into another world,” Billie told the BBC.

As well as adopting other

characters, Billie revealed some very personal aspects of her real life in her debut album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’

The songs each in some part talk about the night terrors Billie suffers from, and she explores these in her music videos. For example ‘bury a friend’ is written from the perspective of the monster under the bed. As creepy and spooky as Billie’s music videos are, most of the stunts she does are real - even a spider crawling out of her mouth in ‘you should see me in a crown’.

Billie is also recognised for her original style. She loves baggy clothes and wears them almost all the time. In her “I Speak My Truth In #MyCalvins” ad campaign she revealed her clothes are a way to protect herself from the hatred that comes from society judging her upon how her body looks; they cannot have an opinion if they cannot see what’s underneath.

Discussing her fashion choices with the NME, she said: “If I was a guy and I was wearing these baggy clothes, nobody would bat an eye. There’s people out there saying, ‘Dress like a girl for once! Wear tight clothes you’d be much prettier and your career would be so much better!’ No it wouldn’t. It literally would not.”

Public pressure also led to Billie revealing she has Tourette syndrome. As more and more videos started to surface around online of her tics, she took to Instagram to confirm she was diagnosed with the disorder but did not want it to define her.

It has certainly not held her back. And with rumours of a UK and Europe tour next year, there will be plenty more chances to see Billie for yourself.

“You don't have to kill somebody to write a song about killing somebody.”

With over 100 exhibits by some 70 practitioners, ‘Still I Rise’ presents the way in which resistance has been approached by visual artists, writers, architects, designers and activists, working as individuals or in groups. It brings together work from around the world, alongside new commissions and work that draws on Bristol’s legacy as a hotbed for grassroots initiatives. At the heart of the exhibition is the idea of collaboration, community building and egalitarianism. Arts Council England (ACE) has warned that a government spending review later this year, and another in 2020, could risk their current funding agreements with National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs) – some of the country’s largest arts organisations including the likes of the National Theatre and Southbank Centre.

In its annual report, ACE said: “A reduction in our grant-in-aid income from 2020 would result in us having insufficient funding to meet our commitments and deliver our plans.”

Moreover it is not just the biggest venues that are feeling the pinch, with local organisations also suffering from arts funding cutbacks at council level.

But public support can make all the difference, as seen with The Civic, Stourport.

When the district council decided to close the Civic Hall eight years ago, the local community fought against the plans. They were offered the chance to prove the venue was worth saving, and when they did it was transferred into community ownership.

Director and Trustee, John Caldwell, said: “Grass routes theatre is so important, we're local people not a commercial tycoon but we all play a massive part in the future of the arts."

You will feel the benefits personally too when you participate in local arts. Many of those who do - whether it be performing in local theatre or volunteering at a museum - describe the positive impact on their mental health.

You can make a difference – get involved with your local arts!

The Making of Poetry: Coleridge, the Wordsworths and Their Year of MarvelsAdam Nicolson HHHHIn The Making of Poetry, Nicolson explores a key year in the history of English poetry - the year, he argues, that inspired some of the greatest works of poetry, such as The Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, as well as Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads. Nicolson traces these strokes of genius back to a trip that Coleridge, the Wordsworths and some of their friends took to the Quantock Hills in Somerset. Meticulously exploring the events of that year, Nicolson presents a very valid argument as to what inspired these world renowned & timeless works of art. NR

Machines Like MeIan McEwan HHHHIan McEwan’s latest novel is set in an alternate 1980s London, a London in which Britain has lost the Falklands and Alan Turing is developing groundbreaking AI technology. Charlie purchases Adam, a synthetic human. Charlie and Miranda, the girl he loves, start developing the machine’s personality. This incredibly entertaining novel is very thought-provoking. It makes the reader think of all those dilemmas surrounding AI. Could a robot ever fully understand what it means to be human? And the existential question, what is it that makes us human? NR

Stories for South Asian Super GirlsRaj Kaur Khaira HHHHHIn this beautifully illustrated book, Raj Kaur Khaira brings together the wonderfu l and inspiring biographies of 50 famous South Asian women who broke the mold and defied the stereotypes pinned on them by the media, society and culture. Stories for South Asian Super Girls is the result of the author collaborating with ten internationally known South Asian female artists. The collaborative nature of this book brings to light how important sisterhood is to the advancement and empowerment of women. The women involved have provided young South Asian girls with a compendium of women who look like them and have achieved so much. These women’s stories will serve to inspire girls the world over and

to show them that there is nothing they cannot achieve if they put their minds to it. It looks at the lives of famous entertainers such as Jameela Jamil and Mindy Kaling, as well as celebrated lawyers and h is to r ica l figures like Noor Inayat Khan, the British Muslim spy. This book compiles the stories of women from Afghan, Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Sri Lankan heritage. This is a rare and delightful book -much needed in my opinion! A celebration of South Asian women’s contribution to the world! Naomi Round

How to Get Away With Murder, S6 – ABCThe drama introduces Oscar-winning actor Viola Davis as a professor at a Philadelphia law school who became ensnared in a murder mystery with five of her students. The final season will follow Analyse Keating's class through their final semester.

The Good Doctor, S3 – Sky AtlanticThe medical drama follows Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgeon with savant syndrome working at the San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital. We will learn more about Shaun's social life and him exploring romance in this new season, growing as a man who wants to be loved.

Élite, S2 – NetflixThe Spanish teen thriller series features an ensemble cast and centres around the students of Spain's most prestigious private school. After the murder of a student at Las Encinas, everyone was a suspect. This season will focus on Marina's death and the investigation.

The Deuce, S3 – HBOThe series follows the rise of the adult film industry. While the first and second season took from its early days through to its rise and mainstream acceptance in the 70s, the third and final season shifts forward into the 80s where video cassettes brought about the mass proliferation of porn.

Transparent (Finale) – Amazon PrimeThe Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series will conclude with a musical episode in place of a fifth season. The final episode will be centred around how the family deals with Maura’s death, who kicked off the entire show’s plot with the late-in-life revelation that she was transgender.> Mar Martinez

Ready or NotHide and Seek? It’s a game everyone knows and everyone has played…but this isn’t a game you want to lose now. The plot is somewhat bizarre and very out there…a young woman gets married to her young, handsome and charming husband only to then find out on her wedding night that she needs to take part in a strange initiation ritual. She draws “Hide and Seek” from a random selection and finds out she needs to hide until dawn…while the rest of the family will try to hunt down and brutally kill her. I presume this is a film that may not do so well financially, but it still has an appeal that sounds interesting. MG

FILM TV

Downton AbbeyFans of the hit series rejoice; the Crawley family is making its way to the big screen. After the success of the original show, which ran from 2010 to 2015, the film reprises the cast of the television series (who couldn’t really be replaced in a film from such a big show!) and after receiving a message that the royal family will be visiting, involves the stir this causes for both the family as well as the servants throughout. Set in 1927 (a year after the series finale) and with the Great Depression looming closer historically it seems to be another strong dose of the period drama that attracted the fans to the original show. Angel has FallenThe third in the “Has Fallen” film series (after London and Olympus’ respective falls), this time we follow Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerald Butler), framed for an assassination attempt on the President of the United States he sets out to both clear his name and also uncover who set him up and is ultimately responsible. While this plot may not be anything particularly innovative and original it does look to have a large variety of action set pieces and stunts to impress and with Morgan Freeman also reprising his role as the President it certainly looks to hold the attention of action junkies and those looking for an exciting time alike. MG

Film of the Month

It: Chapter TwoWe knew this was coming for quite some time now…with the original It film running almost four hours in length two separate releases was always to be expected. With the first film taking place with the “Loser’s Club” being kids, It: Chapter Two is set twenty seven years later, with the loveable cast of the first instalment now all adults, most of whom have gone their separate ways in life and tried to put the horrors of Pennywise the Dancing Clown behind them…Until it comes back again…With a whole new cast of adult “Losers”, I for one look forward to seeing how the cast manage to develop the characters introduced in the first chapter and also develop them as adults, most of whom still harbouring their own personal traumas from running into the titular It. Bill Skarsgard returns to play It, who most often interacts in

the form of Pennywise the Clown, who seeks revenge on the (then) children who defeated him beforehand. With scary visuals but also interesting psychological based scares it’s definitely something to look forward to and having been based on the works of Stephen King you know you’re in for a good time. You could still read the source material if you’re quick (with the novel being around 1400 pages long) but even if you don’t want to you’ll still be in for a good time. Those joining the It cast as the adult "Losers" include James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain. Mark Goddard

MUSIC

Charli XCXCharli HHHH

Brit pop starlet Charli XCX has had a bit of a lean time of late. She was flying high back when Sucker was released and had a hat full of deserved hits. Since then she’s spent quite a lot of time out performing at festivals and on the tour circuit. New material though has been thin on the ground. Charli is a more mature album and with a predominantly teen fan base you’d have to question the new sexed up image on the cover. The music though is good enough to keep fans happy without doing enough to really take Charli XCX to a new level. GT

Tori Sheard at The BodegaThe Bodega in Nottingham has played host to several local and nationwide artists and provided a platform to new up-coming artists. The city own’s Tori Sheard is only 21, and to have a voice like that at her age is just amazing. She can both command the stage and wow the audience with complete ease. She has an almost rock-goddess quality the moment she takes to the stage. Tori treated the crowd to a mixture of fresh original material including songs from her current EP, ‘Edge of the Earth’. Her music is a perfect blend of ambient, folk and rustic mixed with some indie undertones. It was a superb night.> Adam Humphreys

Liam GallagherWhy Me? Why Not HHH

The problem with being a part of one of the world’s most successful bands is that anything you do afterwards will be viewed through a magnifying glass. Some people, most notably John Lennon prove that they have what it takes to still produce chart topping music. Some fall spectacularly on their face. Liam Gallagher’s Why Me? Why Not puts the former Oasis man somewhere in the middle. It has its moments but doesn’t really light up like you might have hoped. It could be worse, look what happened when Roger Daltry made a solo album. GT

MunaSaves The World HHHH

Electro popsters Muna love doing things their own way. They’ve gained a large following for keeping gender pronouns out of their lyrics and often sing about gender related issues. This theme is carried on in Saves The World although both lyrics and music are much broader than on their debut album About U. This is a good step forward in terms of song writing for a band that given the right support could be a surprise hit in 2019. Muna have what it takes to stand out in a saturated market. GT

The HuThe Gereg HHHHH

World music comes in a rainbow of sound and colour so it should be no surprise that Mongolia now has a breakthrough artist taking the music scene by storm. The twist that The Hu throw in is that they infuse their songs with a modern rock vibe. In fact parts of The Gereg can be viewed as more of a cross over than just edgy traditional. The use of unusual instruments amped up for a modern audience marks this unique band out as something special. Still though it’s the songs themselves that prove the strongest reason to fall under this record’s spell. As you might expect there’s an earthy vibe to everything. It’s an immersive experience too with a production that almost makes you believe you’re out on a plain somewhere with a

cold wind on your face. This is a clever record that will appeal to a wide range of people. The world music fans will love its authenticity. Rock fans will love the strength and beat. And those that just like something with melody that isn’t created in a lab will love how warm and sincere each song sounds. Mongolia it turns out makes great music. You can also check out their hit singles 'Yuve Yuve Yu' and 'Wolf Totem' on YouTube, which together have already clocked up over 38.5 million views. Gary Trueman

Syd.31Walk Amongst Rebels HHHHH

With the industrial music revolution now in full swing and seeping into the mainstream Syd.31 couldn’t have timed this release more perfectly. The plucky Brits have self produced a bit of a gem here. Something with the pace of the new 3Teeth offering and the depth of classic Combichrist. It’s easy to see how any of the songs on Walk Amongst Rebels would pack a dance floor at either an industrial club or a regular all nighter. With this album Syd.31 have announced themselves as major players. GT

BEST PICKSAccommodationHoping to become more independent? Living on your own in student accommodation without having to rely on your parents and other family members is definitely going to be a shock to the system! You will have to fend for yourself - this involves getting your own groceries and everyday essentials - not to mention doing the most mundane of chores! You will be learning transferable life skills that you can put into play in the future.

SexBeing at uni means no more sneaking quickies in before the 'rents get back and no shortage of potential partners! But whilst satisfying your most depraved fantasies, spare a thought for playing it safe. Unwanted pregnancies, STDs...this could be you. Student shops are awash with condoms, and they're free by the bagful at your local Family Planning Clinic. So slip it on and slip it in, you've only your breath to lose!

FreshersEveryone knows September is the time of Freshers. Newbies are warmly welcomed in the best possible way - think crazy bar crawls, wacky themed nights out and, of course, plenty of freebies at Freshers fairs! Make sure you attend your local Freshers event and look around the stands thoroughly, because this will be your chance to network, join societies and grab loads of cool goodies.

Bucket ListUni is an experience, so you should enjoy it while it lasts. The best way to ensure you get the most out of your time there is to create a bucket list. Write a checklist of everything you want to achieve during your three years at your chosen uni - example goals could be: join a club, graduate with a first, or even something silly like making your own vodka flavoured gummy bears - who knows, even the smallest of actions could lead to the most memorable of moments.

Social MediaYou can look up your university’s social media pages for upcoming events. Most universities also create Facebook groups or chats for first year student halls where you can meet your flatmates or coursemates. Social media is also a great way of documenting your university years. Do it for the memories!

NUS MarchIf you have strong opinions that you feel you would like to share, or if you simply want to make a difference. Britain’s background in terms of student protest is long and proud, and previous movements have seen thousands of individuals getting involved. This has resulted in more privileges for students; through protesting we have managed to win the right to our much loved student unions.

Careers FairYou can never have too much work experience or too many contacts - so why not make a head-start and find out more by attending your closest careers fair? You never know - you might even find yourself a contact who can help you to get some invaluable work experience in your selected industry.

Student SocietyThere’s a society for everything. Ever wanted to play Quidditch in real life? There’s a society for that. Ever dreamt about joining the circus? There’s probably a society for that too. Whether it’s learning a new language, developing a new skill or just to meet new people, joining a society is a great start to getting involved in university life.

RAG WeekRAG stands for Raising And Giving. Rag Week is an annual week in which students organise parades and fundraising events to raise money for good causes. Not only is this a great way to help fund the important works of many charities, participating will also look great on your CV! Voluntary activities make a difference.

Undergraduates: G e t v a c a t i o n w o r k experience relevant to your career choice. If done in time this will be of serious benefit for the future and enhance your CV. Consider volunteering or working abroad - it’s fun, and shows your adaptability.

CV

Crash CourseE v e r y w h e re y o u t u r n , you'll get asked for your Curriculum Vitae. And what better place to brag about just how great you are. Sell yourself to land yourself that job. Tempted to, erm... accentuate the truth? Be warned, employers are wise to student porkie pies, and you could get a big fat rejection.

How to writeLoads of students make the mistake of over-egging the CV cake. No need to list every last thing you've done. '2011- watched all 3 Lord of the Rings films in one day' is unlikely to impress employers. The secret is simple and easy to read information. Trust us, employers aren't going to settle down in a cosy armchair with a mug of cocoa in front the fire to digest your CV.

The main areas you must cover are personal details, y o u r e d u c a t i o n , y o u r work experience and your interests - what makes you stand out?

TO SETTLE INTO UNIStarting university is an exciting time, but it is also probably the first time you have lived away from home. Here are 10 steps to help you settle in.

SPECIAL 10 Steps

1 Open DoorThis simple but effective tip encourages people to come into your room and talk to you and demonstrates that you are welcoming. Though there will always be times where privacy is needed of course!

2 Accept InvitationsIf someone asks to go for a drink, play sport, or just chill together, say yes! You don’t want to be alone in your room on your own while the rest of your flat/house is bonding.

3 Join SocietiesMost universities will have a freshers fair. This is a great chance to join a sports club or society and meet people with similar interests.

4 ExploreGo for a wander to soak in the local atmosphere, visit some of the most popular attractions and try out a number of different bars, pubs and

clubs until you find your favourite.

5 Personalise Your RoomWhen you first move to university you will probably be living in a fairly bare room or house. Decorating with furniture, belongings and posters will help make it feel more homely.

6 Actually Attend LecturesWe know that odd 9am can be tough to get out of bed for, especially after a night out, but when you miss your lectures you miss the opportunity to bond with your course mates. These are the only people who will truly understand your degree, so can offer support.

7 Eat WellPasta and baked beans don’t have to be the only thing on the menu for the next three to four years. Eating well will better equip you for the ups and downs of uni life,

increasing concentration and promoting higher energy.

8 BudgetYou might feel flush on student loan day, but try to budget. Don’t leave yourself short, and don’t deprive yourself. It’s a fine balance to strike, but the sooner you get the hang of it, the better off you’ll be.

9 Medical MattersYou don’t want to be left without a local doctor should you fall ill or injure yourself. So make sure you register with a GP.

10 Take Your TimeIt’s important to remember that it might take a bit of time to adjust. Everyone reacts to new situations differently, so don’t worry if it takes you a few extra visits home or late-night phone calls to your parents before you feel fully settled in your new surroundings.
