The United States set a new all-time high for

coronavirus cases con-firmed in a single 24-hour period on Friday, reporting just over 100,000 new infec-tions to surpass the record total of 91,000 posted a day earlier. The daily caseload of 100,233 is also a world re-cord for the global pandem-ic, surpassing the 97,894 cases reported by India on a single day in September.

Five times over past ten days, the United States has exceeded its previous sin-gle-day record of 77,299 cas-es registered in July.

When it comes to coro-navirus prevention and ensuring passen-

ger safety, Bahrain Internation-al Airport (BIA) maintains the highest standards.

These are the findings of Air-ports Council International, the only global trade representative of the world’s airport authori-ties located in Montreal, Que-bec, Canada.

T h e appraisal also

made BIA the latest airport in the Middle East to receive Air-port Health Accreditation from ACI World.

“The Airport Health Accred-itation shows travellers that BIA is part of a growing group of leading global airports that have put effective health measures in place,” said ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira.

He added: “To restore pas-sengers’ trust in travel, we must achieve a harmonised approach to health measures across the

globe. This is particularly im-portant for airports that pre-dominantly serve international traffic, like BIA, which is a for-midable passenger and cargo transportation hub in the region and beyond.”

ACI’s accreditation pro-gramme assesses how aligned are the health measures of Airports with ACI Aviation Business Restart and Recovery guidelines, ICAO Council Avia-tion Restart Task Force (CART) recommendations, and industry best practices.

Sri Lanka returns illegal waste to Britain AFP News

Sri Lanka has started shipping 242 containers of hazard-

ous waste, including body parts from mortuaries, back to Britain after a two year court battle by an environment watchdog, offi-cials said yesterday.

Several Asian countries have in recent years been pushing back against an onslaught of in-ternational refuse from wealth-ier nations and have started turning back the unwanted shipments of garbage as they battle against being used as the world’s trash dump.

The first 20 containers of

medical waste, which includ-ed body parts from mortuaries, were loaded on the MV Texas Triumph on Friday and another 65 will be sent within a week, customs spokesman Sunil Ja-yaratne said.

“The balance will be shipped as soon as another vessel is available,” Jayaratne said.

Sri Lanka’s court of appeal two weeks ago ordered the re-patriation of the bio-waste from hospitals and tonnes of plastic waste imported in violation of local and international shipping regulations.

a proactive approach from the onset of the pandemic, in-troducing a range of precau-tionary measures to minimise the impact of the pandemic at airport facilities and pro-tect public health. These will remain in place at the new Passenger Terminal, enabling BAC to deliver and facilitate a

hassle-free airport experience replete with comfort, connec-tions, and character.

“Some of the measures in-clude frequently sterilising and disinfecting the airport, installing hand sanitiser dis-pensers throughout the termi-nal, enforcing social distanc-ing, and ensuring that person-al protective equipment such as face masks and gloves are available for both passengers and staff alike.”

Faster recoveryAl Binfalah noted that the

resumption and growth of pas-senger traffic are among the top priorities of BAC.

He emphasised that this pro-cess has to be harmonised and carefully coordinated across various industry authorities. With a growing number of airports enrolling in the ACI World Airport Health Accredi-tation program, we believe that the global aviation industry will be in a better position to recover faster.

alert’ website of Bahrain’s Min-istry of Health can be summa-rised thus.

It has all: latest news, monthly and weekly COVID-19 contact tracing reports, engaging pub-lic awareness videos, and info-graphics on COVID-19, and more.

The website ‘healthalert.gov.bh’ gives users the lat-est updates on precaution-ary measures and guidelines in a quick and hassle-free way.

A dedicated frequently asked question bank, as well as a list of private clinics authorized to provide COVID-19 related health services, makes the website in-formative.

The new platform aims at giving a significant boost to the Kingdom in its battle against the deadly virus, as information is the key to victory here. The new MoH website has plenty of it.

Raising awareness

Minister of Health, Faeqa Saeed Al Saleh, said the web-site now concentrates on raising awareness among Bahraini citi-zens and residents here.

The website, the minister said, will serve as a platform to provide timely updates on Bah-rain’s responses to the coronavi-rus (COVID-19) global pandemic, precautionary measures, and decisions issued by the govern-ment.

The website also tells citizens and residents about Team Bah-rain, its efforts - especially first responders and other essential workers – in combating the vi-rus. The launch of the new web platform follows the directives of HRH the Crown Prince to enhance the quality of health services.

Arabic, EnglishHRH CP has said that a com-

prehensive website is needed to provide accurate informa-tion to all both in Arabic and English.

Al Saleh said the website works as an official source of information and updates on the COVID-19 global pan-demic, adding it is dependa-ble for learning about general health developments within Bahrain.

British school reopens TDT | Manama

British school in Bah-rain will resume class-

es starting today, said the ministry of education, after a 10-day closure due to virus infection.

The Department of Public Relations and Information at the Ministry of Education said the school had sani-tised all its facilities and as-sured that the few infected cases and their contacts had completed the home con-finement period ahead of re-opening.

The Health Ministry called on school principals to contact the relevant Ed-ucation Ministry’s directo-rates when COVID-19 cases are detected to coordinate on the procedures in case there is a decision to close a school, be it public or pri-vate.

Earlier this month, the Health Ministry, in coordi-nation with the Education Ministry, suspended studies in the British School of Bah-rain for ten days.

Two more COVID-19 deaths TDT | Manama

Two more COVID-19 deaths yesterday took Bahrain toll from the deadly pandemic to 321.

Two Bahraini men aged 65 and 79 years are the latest casual-ties, said the Ministry of Health in a twitter statement yesterday.

The ministry also recorded 354 additional recoveries yester-day taking the total number of people cured to 78,719.

The need for learning space Ministry increases the capacity of four government schools in the Kingdom

New academic buildings are on the way in four of the government schools

in the Kingdom where class-room space has become a premi-um amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision comes at a time when schools all over the King-dom have reopened and are trying to free up more spaces for students to distance them socially.

Sheikh Mishaal bin Muham-mad Al Khalifa, the Assistant Undersecretary for Construc-tion and Maintenance Projects

at the Ministry of Works, Munic-ipalities Affairs and Urban Plan-ning, announced the decision. The move, Sheikh Mishaal said, will boost the learning spaces for students and enhance their learning experience.

He said the ministry had pre-pared detailed designs of the each of the projects, whose ten-ders will be issued separately.

Schools selected for the up-grading are Asma Zat An-Ni-taqain Primary School, Budaiya Primary Preparatory School for Girls, East Riffa Primary School for Girls and Busaiteen Primary School for Boys.

Multistoried buildings thus constructed will have 10 to 20 classrooms, clinics, teachers’ rooms, laboratories, facilities

for differently-abled students as well as administrative rooms.

The project will increase the capacity of Asma Zat An-Nitaqa-in Primary School by 15 per cent to 1,680 students and Budaiya Elementary and Preparatory School for Girls by 4pc to 1,228 students.

The new additions will also give a 23.5 pc and 49.5pc ca-

pacity increases to East Riffa Primary School for Girls and Busaiteen School, respectively.

New buildings at East Riffa and Busaiteen both will have 19 and 20 classrooms, respectively, on three floors.

Following the upgrading, East Riffa school could handle 1,469 students and Busaiteen 1,662 students.

Schools selected for the upgrading works are Asma Zat An-Nitaqain Primary School, Budaiya Primary Preparatory School for Girls, East Riffa Primary School for Girls and Busaiteen Primary School for Boys.

Four in the dock for selling intoxicants

Police arrested four peo-ple for manufacturing

and selling intoxicating sub-stances in the Kingdom.

The Director-General of the Capital Governorate Police Department said the suspects are all Asians by nationality and aged be-tween 32 and 45 years.

Police acting on a tip-off received opened an investi-gation resulting in the arrest of the four.

The top cop said the sus-pects were manufactur-ing and selling intoxicants at one their residence in Al-Qudaybiya district.

Police officers who were investigating the case also managed to seize several illegal substances from their residence.

The case is now with pub-lic prosecution for further action.


In 1971, when Bahrain became inde-pendent and began its transforma-tion as a modern nation, our leaders

quickly realised that the true wealth of our country lay in its human resources. The Late Emir, our Ruler Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and HRH the Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa were visionaries who sought to harness this strength for the new nation’s growth. Under the careful eye of HRH the PM, the modern Bahrain banking industry was born, a global hub that used the geo-political position of the Kingdom to full advantage to serve the East and the West.

We have recently marked 100 years of modern bank-ing in Bahrain. This is one of the most im-portant service industries in the Kingdom and has lived up to its prom-ise, generating jobs and new s k i l l s e t s f o r Bahrainis and boosting the national econ-omy. Having started as an offshore hub, Bahrain is to-day a leader in Islamic finance and also in the fintech indus-try of the MENA region. What is more, the Bah-rain banking industry has kept pace with important chal-lenges such as monitoring and managing mon-ey laundering threats, mount-ing a measured r e s p o n s e t o crypto curren-cy and closely monitoring cyber crime in the financial world.

Most importantly, Bahrain’s banking industry is a great example of how we can enable our people to maximise their potential. The BIBF is a fine institution of learning and its association with glob-al centres of study and universities of repute has made world-class training accessible to all banking professionals. Similarly, banks in Bahrain are encour-aged to bridge the gender divide and Bahraini women have positions of re-sponsibility in the industry and indeed, they are leaders in the fintech sector.

As we celebrate the centenary of this valuable sector, let us implement these lessons in newer areas – the knowledge industry and the manufacturing sector which Bahrain is developing. We need to harness the ample government support and resources that we get and make it possible for Bahrainis to thrive in this new workplace. For that, the new en-trants as well as the established names must align their vision with the past history of the Kingdom’s banking suc-cess and its future 21st century potential.

I have long suspected that the endless undoubtedly boring Eu-ropean summit meetings are so

turgid for a reason. It is easy to get lost in the byzantine complexities of false agreements that actually solve nothing. And that is how the EU likes it: For us to have little idea that it is a paper tiger, so much less than meets the eye in terms of its geostrategic power.

But crises clarify. And there is absolutely no doubt that the coro-navirus has made crystal clear that the old model governing the EU has finally, after a brilliant 70-year run, entirely run out of steam. The sup-posed deal over emergency Europe-an coronavirus funds pledged last week to the plague-ravaged south, far from being a concord, has ex-posed the EU’s haplessness for all to see.

First, if you are brave enough to wade through the actual agreement reached, it becomes palpably clear that it is full of policy holes. The Eurogroup of finance ministers has recommended using the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), estab-lished in the wake of the 2008 Great Recession, to meet the southerners’ needs.

A basic problem with this is that the ESM was set up in the wake of an asymmetric shock — the par-ticular economic follies of Greece and possibly other southern econ-omies — rather than the symmetric shock of a global pandemic. In other words, there can be no doubt that Greece was largely to blame for its own parlous situation. The same

cannot now be said of the Southern European states ravaged by a global pandemic. The basic issue of fairness is in real question.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte rightly calls the proposed €540 billion ($587 billion) rescue plan “a trap.” The accord is there to only deal with the immediate impact of the virus. However, over the much larger rescue efforts necessary to revive the Italian and other south-ern economies necessitated by the debilitating lockdown, normal con-ditionality will be imposed.

This is understandably political-ly toxic in Italy, where it is seen as surrendering basic sovereignty to the uncertain mercies of economic overlords the EU, the International Monetary Fund and the Europe-an Central Bank. No Italian leader could accept such colonization and survive. In true Kafkaesque fash-ion, no country in the south that truly needs the ESM can politically accept it. These design flaws have become so obvious that the deal has unraveled almost immediately upon delivery.

This amounts to more than Eu-rope’s glaring inability to behave as a union when it truly counts; it also illustrates the limits of the guiding philosophy of the EU. The “Monnet method” — functionalism — is a pol-icy strategy based on the advocacy of small, technocratic, apolitical agree-ments being agreed to precisely be-cause they seemed secondary, or technical, eventually amounting to decisive movement toward a con-federated European state.

In the 1950s, rather than talking about grand visions of European

union (a Valhalla that had far less than majority support), it was better to discuss seemingly inoffensive coal and steel union, even as the latter led to further economic union, and then to a degree of political union. Large political questions were to be pur-posefully avoided in favor of getting to large political answers (always in the direction of ever closer union) through the backdoor of technical, apolitical initiatives. Over decades, functionalism met with the great-est of success, as a broadly united Europe emerged, all without ever answering the basic question of what sort of political construct was truly being created.

While this seemed clever and it worked for a long while, in actuality, functionalism has stored up a great deal of trouble for Europe, which has come home to roost since the Great Recession of 2008. The founders of the EU wanted a powerful Hamilto-nian Brussels without ever having their Hamiltonian moment..

This means they were broadly advocates of a federated (or confed-erated), centralized European state, without ever having the necessary political debate that raged in the US in the 1790s between the advocates of centralism (Alexander Hamilton) and decentralization (Thomas Jef-ferson). In the end, the federalist ad-ministration of George Washington opted for Hamilton’s centralizing vision, won overwhelming re-elec-tion and a popular mandate for the national government to assume state debt, while at the same time estab-lishing a powerful national Treas-ury, brilliantly headed by Hamilton himself.

Due to an overly clever function-alism, present European leaders (with the honorable exception of President Emmanuel Macron of France) shied away from this diffi-cult argument in the happier times that preceded the coronavirus. But the failure of functionalism over the past 70 years to decisively answer the question of what sort of union Europe was to become is now fatally handicapping basic and necessary efforts to combat the coronavirus — the political risk event of our gen-eration.

The result is an EU built only for sunny weather, which trundles along nicely in good times, but is fatally overmatched in bad ones. A political union that no one really believes in and whose members are not willing to make the basic sacrifice of blood and treasure for is a union only in name. And, without the Hamiltoni-an moment in these times of crisis, Europe will be increasingly unfit for purpose.

come together in the spirit of patriot-ism and unity to raise defenses against an unusual and unseen enemy – the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

In just 24 hours, these parties, led by the example of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, have raised over BD 21 million to help people and business-es struck by the impact of the virus. The funds, under the project ‘Feena Khair’ (There is Good in Us) will be used for business support and medical support as well as humanitarian food and clothing aid.

The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry also provided its spacious and centrally-located old premises for use by the COVID-19 task force.

In the midst of our peculiar con-dition of isolation, social dis-tancing and despair, we must rejoice in this stream of com-passion that has sprung from amidst us to counter the harsh reality of the crisis. It is praise-worthy of the big businesses to have come forward to sup-port the vision of the leaders of Bahrain and keep the hu-manitarian consideration as the first priority in this crisis.

Long after the dust has set-tled around the world, those who will be remembered are leaders who led from the heart. Undoubtedly, the response of Bahrain’s lead-ership will shed a beacon of light on our historic response. Inspired by His Majesty, our Crown Prince and First Dep-uty Premier guided the gov-ernment in the crucial early days to approach the sensi-tive themes of quarantine and treatment with compassion. When he returned from his

sojourn abroad, our beloved Prime Minister immediately galvanized the Cabinet and government officials, displaying his admirable energy and crisis management in managing the situation.

I am sure you will all agree that this has inspired our business houses and individuals to donate so generously and tap the vein of goodness within us and reach out to help fellow-residents of Bahrain. The days are challenging but when we have great leaders, we all rise to the occasion and to greater heights of goodness than we ourselves thought possible.

Yes indeed. There is good in us all..

“We have a number of op-tions of financing. We are reviewing that all the time,” Lundgren said in an inter-view ahead of the opening of a new airport in the Ger-man capital.

“I am not against state aid,” he said. “It is very clear that the crisis has been to that extent that you can’t expect the industry and its players to cope with it all by themselves.”

Three banks seal merger to form Hungary’s No.2 banking group

Bank and MKB Bank and savings group Takarekbank (MTB) have signed a deal to form Hungary’s sec-ond-largest banking group, the minister responsible for the agreement told state news agency MTI late on Friday.

The deal was widely ex-pected after the three banks announced a strategic al-liance in May. It marks a new chapter in the shake-up of a banking system that has seen local players gain influence under national-ist Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The state will have a 30.35 per cent stake in the new group, to be called Magyar Bankholding, according to a statement by minister Andrea Mager posted on MTI. The owners of MKB Bank will hold 31.96pc and Takarekbank will have 37.69pc.

Britain’s first permanent vegan butcher, Rudy’s, is opening, set to sell meat-free versions of tradi-tional products such as baycon, soysage and turk’y.

Demand for vegan products has surged in re-

cent years in Britain, with increasing numbers of people cutting out animal-derived ingredients completely, while others reduce the amount of meat and dairy they consume each week.

“People understand what it is that we’re sell-ing,” co-founder Matthew Foster told Reuters.

“It’s all designed to emulate meat. It tastes like meat, it’s got meat-like texture.”

Law firm EMW reported a 128 per cent jump in new trademarks registered for vegan food in the UK last year, with both large corporates and small companies registering such trademarks as vegan ice cream and pastries.

The team behind the new butchers started out in 2017 with a vegan diner and are now looking to offer goods, including whole dinner kits to be made in the home.

Factory activity in China dipped slightly in Octo-ber, according to official

data published yesterday, but remained in growth territory as the world’s second-largest economy continued its recovery after being hammered by the coronavirus.

The closely watched Purchas-ing Managers’ Index (PMI) is a key gauge of manufacturing ac-tivity in China, which has large-ly bounced back after plunging in February because of tough pandemic-control measures.

In October, the PMI figure stood at 51.4, slightly below the reading of 51.5 for September. Any figure above the 50-point mark represents growth while

below it signals a contraction.Zhao Qinghe, a senior stat-

istician at the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), said this month’s figures, with increases in several key indices includ-ing exports, imports and new orders, demonstrated a “quick recovery”.

Textiles, chemical raw mate-rials, chemical products, rubber and plastic products used in the

fight against the pandemic saw the biggest increase in demand, he added.

In February, China’s manu-facturing PMI plunged to 35.7 points after the coronavirus brought much of China to a standstill.

Non-manufacturing PMI came in at 55.2 points -- an increase of 0.3 percentage points from Sep-tember, showing further signs of

an economic rebound.China is expected to be the

closed the sale of one of its factories in Brazil to civil construction and logistics firm Construtora Sao Jose and asset manager FRAM Capital, without disclosing the price.

A previous agreement to sell the factory in Sao Ber-nardo do Campo, which makes the poor-selling Ford Fiesta as well as buses, to Brazilian automaker CAOA fell through last year. Ford subsequently announced it was closing the plant.

Britain’s government will extend its emergency coro-navirus wage subsidy scheme to ensure workers who are temporarily laid off during a new England-wide lockdown receive 80% of their pay, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on

Saturday. Britain introduced the 80pc wage subsidy scheme in March and it had been due to expire on Saturday to be replaced with more targeted support.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed various challenges for nations across the world during its now nearly six-month long run. Be it citizen health and well-being

or economy, the epidemic of colossal proportions has man-aged to adversely impact almost all spheres of a nation. The post pandemic path to recovery seems equally daunting as all aspects of economy which have come to a grinding halt need to be restarted and rejuvenated. This recovery process is nothing short of rebuilding the critical components of a nation and as such provides a never before opportunity to fine-tune some sectors and reset some other ones for greater efficiency and compatibility to current conditions.

Like any other nation, the impact of climate change has taken its toll on the environmental conditions of Bahrain by causing the delicate marine and land-based ecology to be compromised. In addition to this Bahrain’s natural resources too are getting stretched to their limits putting a lot of strain on energy sources and increasing the dependence on fossil fuel to further power the economy. As the fossil fuels continue to dictate the growth narrative, renewable ener-gy options must not be allowed to fall into the back seat. As Bahrain endeavours to emerge stronger and better in the post COVID era, it must strengthen its renewable energy portfolio and ensure a greater inclusivity of the same in the growth story of Bahrain. Var-ious innovative renewable energy options can be included into the energy-mix to power the economy. Energy from harnessed waste is one such sustainable option.

The population of Bahrain is expected to reach 1.73 million by end of 2020. Being a high-income nation with equally high human development index score of 0.824 which translates to 47th rank globally, Bahrain is a country in advanced mode of progress. The predominantly oil powered economy is having good growth contribution from finance and tourism sectors as well. The strategic geographical location, good infrastruc-ture and moderate weather has ensured Bahrain becoming a preferred epicenter for business and leisure alike. Naturally, this increase in commerce and tourism has also meant an increase in municipal solid waste (msw) generation which according to some estimates is now one of the highest in the world with approximately 1,200 million tonnes of MSW being generated every year, or approximately 4000 tonnes per day generation of MSW factoring in the population and institution MSW output. This MSW is usually sent to Asker landfill 25 km from Manama.

Given this quantum of MSW generation Bahrain is poised to extract maximum recovery of energy from this waste provided the solutions for the same are technologically advanced and cutting edge such as thermochemical tech-nology based, anaerobic digestion technology based, and plasma gasification based as opposed to direct combustion or incineration methods. The primary objective of waste to energy generation is to extract electricity or heat or both from MSW. Utilizing the advanced waste to energy (WTE) methods Bahrain can scale up the MSW processing for har-nessing energy and increase the renewable energy quotient in the predominantly fossil fuel fed power grid. This can help cut down dependence on fossil fuels thereby reducing green-house gas emissions in a major way.

The increasing reliance on renewable energy will also help reduce fossil fuel usage driven heat generation and thereby control extreme ambient temperatures in Bahrain. Apart from imbibing the best waste to energy practices from around the world, Bahrain can also explore innovative models where scaled down waste to energy generators are installed in high population density and high MSW generating areas of Bah-rain. This will not only reduce the load on landfills, reduce transportation costs of MSW but also bring the concept of renewable energy and recycling to the doorstep of the cit-izens and therefore increase much needed awareness and sensitivity for the environment. These mini-WTE plants can be privately run and government subsidized. This will in turn promote employment and entrepreneurship which is very much needed in the post COVID phase of economic revival.

In today’s scenario of mounting MSW, discarding the waste without committing it entirely for WTE is an opportunity lost. Bahrain has a good track record of harnessing waste; it just needs scaling up so that the nation has a healthy mix of renewable and non-renewable power at its disposal.

Nearly a million people in the Philippines were evac-uated from their homes

yesterday as the most powerful typhoon of the year so far bar-relled towards the country, with authorities warning of “destruc-tive” winds and flooding.

Typhoon Goni is expected to slam into Catanduanes Island Sunday morning with wind speeds of up to 205 kilometres per hour (127 miles per hour) before crossing the main island of Luzon, the state weather forecaster said.

It comes a week after Typhoon Molave hit the same region of the natural disaster-prone archipela-go, killing 22 people and flooding low-lying villages and farmland, before crossing the South China Sea to Vietnam.

“It looks like we will have re-ally strong winds, increasing the chances of widespread flooding and landslides,” Mark Timbal, spokesman for the National Dis-aster Risk Reduction and Manage-ment Council, told local broad-caster ABS-CBN.

“Storm surges are imminent on our east coast. We are monitoring Mayon and Taal volcanoes for possible volcanic mud flows.”

Civil Defense chief Ricardo Jalad said “almost a million” people had left their homes in the Bicol region, which includes the southern part of Luzon and Catanduanes.

Authorities spent yesterday marshalling rescue vehicles, emergency response teams and relief goods ahead of the typhoon.

“Violent winds and intense rainfall” are expected that could trigger floods and landslides in an area of more than 20 million people, the weather service said.

There was a “high risk” of storm surges of more than three metres (10 feet) high along parts of the coast, it added.

Schools which have been empty since the start of the coronavirus pandemic are being used as emer-gency shelters as well as govern-ment-run evacuation centres and gymnasiums.

“Evacuating people is more dif-ficult at this time because of Cov-id-19,” Bicol regional civil defence spokesman Alexis Naz said.

Mary Ann Echague, 23, and her family fled their home in the coastal city of Legazpi in Bi-col to an inland primary school where they were sheltering in a classroom with several other families.

“We fear the wrath of the ty-phoon,” said Echague, who was with her two children, parents and siblings. They had carried with them a portable stove, tinned meat, instant noodles, coffee, bread, blankets and pillows.

A Saudi man in a speeding car crashed into the outer

gates of Mecca’s Grand Mosque late Friday night, the country’s state-run news agency reported.

The crash happened around 10:30 pm and saw the man’s car ram through a barrier and keep driving until it hit the gate on the Grand Mosque’s southern side, the Saudi Press Agency said.

Authorities arrested the man inside, who appeared in an “ab-normal” condition, the agency said, without elaborating. Police referred them man to prosecu-tors for possible charges, ac-cording to the report.

Video on social media corre-sponded to the news agency’s account, with security forces later pushing the damaged se-dan away.

A mother and three of her children were pulled to safety on Saturday af-

ter being trapped for almost 18 hours under a building in the western Turkish city of Izmir that was flattened in a powerful earthquake.

One of the children suc-cumbed to his injuries later in hospital, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca told reporters in Izmir. The child was one of 37 people killed in Friday’s quake: 35 in Turkey and two on the Greek island of Samos.

Rescuers were continuing ef-forts to free the woman’s fourth child. The mayor of the Aegean port city said around 180 people remained trapped.

“In the meantime, we are de-lighted to be hearing miracles happening as a result of diligent work by rescue teams,” Mayor Tunc Soyer told television chan-nel Fox TV.

The quake destroyed at least 20 buildings in Izmir, causing panic in the city and setting off tidal waves that slammed into coastal areas and islands.

President Tayyip Erdogan, speaking in a televised ad-

dress, said 885 people were injured, 15 of them critically. Koca, the health minister, said on Saturday 243 people were still being treated in Turk-ish hospitals, eight in critical condition.

Environment Minister Mu-rat Kurum said more than 100 people had been rescued so far.

Rescue work was punctuated by hundreds of aftershocks. By Saturday afternoon search op-erations had been completed in eight buildings and were con-tinuing in nine others, officials said.

One resident said both her parents were still trapped.

“I couldn’t get any news. I couldn’t get any news,” the woman told Reuters, when asked about attempts to reach them.

Bulldozers removed debris from collapsed buildings while rescuers dismantled walls by hand. Workers set up 300 tents for those made homeless in the city, with 600 more tents on the way.

In a rare show of warmth

between Turkey and Greece - caught up in a dispute over energy exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean - Erdogan exchanged solidari-ty messages with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday.

shot to international star-dom as the suave, sexy and sophisticated Brit-ish agent James Bond and went on to grace the silver screen for four

decades, has died aged 90, the BBC and Sky News reported on Saturday.

Connery was raised in near poverty in the slums of Edinburgh and worked as a coffin pol-isher, milkman and life-guard before his body-building hobby helped

launch an acting career that made him one of the world’s biggest stars.

“The world’s greatest Scot, the last of the real Hollywood stars, the de-finitive Bond,” said Alex Salmond, Scotland’s for-mer first minister said. “He was also a staunch patriot, a deep think and outstanding human be-ing.”

Connery will be re-membered first as British agent 007, the character created by novelist Ian Fleming and immortal-ized by Connery in films starting with ““Dr. No” in 1962.

As Bond, his debonair manner and wry humour in foiling flamboyant vil-lains and cavorting with beautiful women belied a darker, violent edge, and he crafted a depth of character that set the standard for those who followed him in the role.

A former BRAVE CF Welter-weight World Champion Ab-doul Abdouraguimov knows the drill to cap-ture the belt and, more than that, knows Amin Ayoub really well from their time training together. Thus, the “Lazy King” is bet-ting on Ayoub to beat Cleiton “Predador” Silva and become the new world champion.

According to ‘The Predator’, Amin is trying to be a founding member of his fan club in France. The champion also laughed off the attempt by Amin to trash talk him, and said he would send a signed photo to his foe after beating him at BRAVE CF 44, which takes place on November 5th, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

fighters in the world. Undefeated in-side the BRAVE CF Arena, Cleiton has finished all three of his opponents, two of them inside the very first round, including the title-winning submission over Luan “Miau” Santiago.

With a professional record of 15 wins and only two losses, he does not like to leave it to the judges, with more than two thirds of his professional bouts ending via stoppage. He will be hoping to repeat more of the same in his bout against Amin.
