Dear Sir• Subject: Ioanni~ p~~runina.s.
The information contained in your 5-19-0 of 21 Jay, 1946, w s com:nunicated to .Jr. Ioannis Paparninas in Salonica. There seems however to be some misunderstanding as this man was born in Rhodes and his intention is to go to the home of his mother and not his mother-in-law at Agios loannis. cording to the information which be gives .. ~s. Papaminas senior r...as a house with s i rooms and ten strem.~a of lend growing fig and olive trees and he is in possession of a letter from her inviting him to live there v.ith his second ife and three children.
He feels confident that if he returned to the isle.:od. he wo·ilJ.d be able to work and support himself, hich he is unable to do in Greece at the present time.
Furthermore, Mr. Papaminas has received a letter from the British Consulate in Salonica stating toot be s been granted permission by the British Military uthorities to visit the island; the permit, hor-ever. states that this is for a visit of two months
The ,{inistry of Repatriation could not of cou1·se meet the cost of travel to the island for a visit Rm it ~ould "be greatly appreciated if you nould again discuss the matter and obtain, from the British .,1ilitary uthori ties, a permit of re-entry for :permanent residence. In the opinion of this !Jission, if the man can claim residence in Rhodes, there is no reason why he should be a burden on Salonica,. This answers para.graph 3 of your Welfare Officer 1s report of 18 May.

We have received further ne s from our Greece ".is ion concerning the repatriation of Dodecanesians from Greece.
According to the re ult of the meeting held in SeptP.mber 1946 in Athens at the inistry of ·elfare•s office, the "inistry of Repatriation Athens hao invited the 108 applicants to call at their office ith the vie to obtain their visas. To date 10 only have applied and will be sailed in the near future on the s/s ELjNI .
A further 887 persons 'whose names did not appear on your list as either accepted or refused had also registered 1th the Greece ~ssion for repatriation to the Dodecanese an attempts had been made to call them in through the Dodecane~e ssociation but so far none applied . It i"' thou ht that the majority of the persor
ho registered ith thi~ ission for repatriation have either returned to the Dodecanese by their o.n means or no linger desired to go, which eQlains the small response to the effortsmade to call them in. Consequently while we might expect a fe more to come through the Finistry of Repatriation channels e should not anticipate any graat influx .

I enclose herewith an application from Antonios G. POLIS for the repatriation from Greece to Symi of his 50 - year old mother, Fotini P. KATSILLI.

I wish to acknowledge your letters of ~pril 9, and 11ay 4 an:.1 thank you for the various enclosures with these two· communications. t'revious acknowle gement nas not been sent as we at tnis end have been endeavoring to get some kind of answer from the int~rested parties here, as to the policy to be adopted regarding the general repatriation of D.P. ' s to the Dodecanese.
t has become obvious to this mission tiat, amongst the very large number of J.P.'s who have ot on our books, there were a number who could not possibly justify for repatriation facilities in tne terms of the UNRRA charter. LJuring the month of 1ay, there1ore, we made a complete check up on all registrations and a few days ago, final lists were prepared which showed that we nad a grand total of 632 individuals registered for trans ortation to the odecanese. ,
In actual fact personal interviews were only conducted with 368 people, the remaining 264 were not aole to be located as their addresses proved incorrect etc., but from a check of- our records they do appear· to be bona. fide ~odecanese displaced persons~ ,e therefore submit that maximum possible total involved is 6~2.

The certificate indicates (a) that he was a bona fide Dodecaneee(b) the address of the next of kin or relative with whom he was going to live and (c) that he had enou n m~ans to oe self-supporting.
I am sure you vill appreciate the very great difti-culty we have been having at this end owing to the fact that officially we have been hrced to inform the individuals that they co-1ld not go to the Dodecanese for permanent residence ~ ~e know for a fact a great number have made their own arrange~e~ts and gone quite independently of J 'RR· or the Gre~k Aliens' Bureau , and these injividuals have not been tu rn ed back .

Information has been received from H.B.Mo Embassador, Athens, regarding the repatriation to this territory of 36~ persons of Dodecanesian origin.
Prior to the entry of these persons into this territory, it is desirous that a conference be held amongst the addresses to discuss the financial, food, billeting and other arrangements which will be necessary for the easy accommodation of these persons.
For this purpose a meeting·will be held in the S.C.A.O's office Municipality Building at 10 a.mo on 2 July 1946.

The gist of this, as far aa we are concerned, appears to be that future arrangements for repatriation of Dodecaneaians in Greece will be a matter to be undertaken directly by B.M.A. with the Greek Ministry of Welfare. The individual problem however, if it arises, continues to be handled by UNRRA Greece Mission.
