DID YOU KNOW?

The pneumatic brake, a hugely significant advance for the safety

of railway trains, was invented by engineer and industrialist George Westinghouse, Jr, who was one of the world’s most prolific inventors with more than 400 patents to his name.

George Westinghouse, Jr [USA] was the son of an inventive father who received some 30 patents of his own. Westinghouse Jr worked at his father’s farm machinery factory, G. Westinghouse & Co. , before running away, aged 15, to fight for the Union Army in the American Civil War. He returned to New York in 1865, at the insistence of his father, to attend college, and in October that year he received the first of his many patents. The college recommended that his mechanical aptitude would be better fulfilled in a workshop than a classroom, so in December he returned to his father’s factory-but within two years he had a factory of his own.

After watching a railway crew struggling to put two derailed carriages back on the tracks, Westinghouse Jr invented a machine to do just that. He received a patent for the re-railer in 1867 and established a fac-tory the same year to manufacture his invention. Two years later he witnessed a head-on collision between two trains thet led to his most important invention, the Westinghouse air brake. Because of the conventional braking system-which involved a brakeman in each carriage or wagon applying a separate brake-the trains had not been able to stop in time. Having read about compressed air being used for tunnel-drilling in Swit-zerland, where the drills operated upto 1,000 metres away from the compressor, Westinghouse applied the concept to braking trains. He invented a system that enables the driver to apply the brakes in all the car-riages or wagons at the same time, vastly increasing the safe speed of both goods and passenger trains.

Westinghouse Jr is also famous as the champion of alternating current [ AC ] electricity in the face of

fierce competition from Thomas Edison [USA ], who favoured direct current [DC ]. Westinghouse astutely bought patents for AC transformers and the AC induction motor invented by Nikola Tesla [ Croatia-USA ], and between 1891 and 1896 he established the first large scale AC power station.

1867 Receives a patent on 12 February for a rail-way carriage re-railer and sets up his own factory to manufacture his own invention.

Proceedings of the meeting1. President welcomed all the Managing Council members from all the five chapters. This was an unique opportunity to share views from all the chapters to discuss the concerns and opportunities.

All members participated fully .

The important points are covered below :

A . This convention of INSSAN had 309 delegates with 49 companies taking part .This was highest participation in many years.

Members appreciated that INSSAN has created a good brand name that it has good participation year after year.

However it is noticed that even though INSSAN has a long list of member companies, relatively only select few companies are regularly participating.

B. Other than National Convention and summit of NIC INSSAN has very few other activities and all chapters have not taken up programmes on regular basis.

C. There are many difficulties faced by HQ/chapters to follow up for getting annual subscription. Our subscription system needs to be easy and effective.

D. While all types of companies are welcome ,there are very small companies [ MSME ] who do not have any suggestion activities but are also wanting to be treated at par with large companies.Membership criteria needs review.

E. Our recent experience suggests that students from engineering colleges and Management institutions, who are future potential members have shown keen interest in participating in INSSAN. We need to think about some way to involve the students. There was very strong demand by Aurangabad Chapter to come to conclusions earlier, which will help to get more

memberships to INSSAN.

F. Increasing membership : Despite efforts the membership is not really growing. While new members have come ,some of the old members have discontinued. Apparently companies do not know or appreciate the benefits, with the changed management in these organisations priorities. However it is felt very strongly the Need for branding of INSSAN was seen as immediate requirement.

G. National Convention has been a flagship programme of INSSAN for number of years and employees are waiting for the same . However it needs a fresh review to make it more participative and offer something of value to participants, Like special lectures, panel discussions ,skit competition etc. while keeping the contests as main theme.

H. In order to drive the changes needed, INSSAN will need to augment its resources at HQ and to some extent even at chapter levels.

I. Activities presently undertaken are few and some more activities are being considered are CEO meet, Training Programmes, Theme workshops, Regional meets etc.

J. INSSAN should create a team of Suggestion Champions/Mentors/Experts from amongst its experienced senior members, who will be available to companies for guidance/help in those company premises for continuous help.

2 Other Administrative matters for chapters :

• CompletingofannualaccountsbyJuneendandensuring that the auditor gives Balance sheet with schedules, Income /Exp and auditors report.

• All chapters are required to hold monthlymeeting and keep record(statutory) and share minutes with HQ.

next age will be innovation age. Following are few examples of original inventions. If you see the latest status of these items, you will realize through 1000s of people’s innovation they are much different today. Credit of discoveries and invention goes to few genius persons and by & large for that we can just pray. But everybody has creativity, it can also be taught and we can involve them in innovating product which they are using, and surround them. They can do wonders. In industrial environment Suggestion Schemes can achieve this spectacular work.

For some, the time is always the present, and technology seems to mature as they do, slowly over time. But it's enough for us to take a quick look back and realize - we've come a really long way. When you look at these items and how they have changed over the last century, it's amazing how some things have become. And although these items are much more convenient now, some of those older designs had some real craftsmanship and grace to them.
