‘Young at Heart’ These respondents said they also enjoyed listening to music on the radio and were interested in a wide range of output such as discussions, current affairs, news (local, national and international) and, amongst men, sports. Women, especially those at home during the day, reported that they enjoyed phone-ins and ‘chat’ as this provided ‘company’ for them when doing the housework. Some also enjoyed more in-depth debate provided by radio stations such as BBC Radio 4. ‘Traditional’ Traditional listeners, who were mainly listening to South Asian targeted stations, said they enjoyed music for entertainment and enjoyment but they also wanted to connect with South Asian communities in the UK and abroad. Therefore, radio also enabled them to keep in touch via local, national and international news from the Indian sub continent. South Asian targeted stations were valued because they provided output in regional languages and were felt to be culturally ‘appropriate’.

2.3 Repertoire of Radio Stations Consumed Review of listener diaries and feedback from discussions showed the range of national, commercial and community radio consumed by the research sample. Figure 2 details respondents’ wider listening of stations:
