EXTRACTS FROM THE WRITINGS OF THE LATE W. P. GBOSVENOR

(As written to A.C.T.A. Secretary io mid-1940's)

Mention of shooting happenings- How easy it is to remember the little things that please one. In reverse, one is prone to forget such an in- stance as when, thanks to an attack of "fiinching", I missed the whole ten targets in an event. I lost my temper and nearly smashed the gun over the club milings as I left the line. Childish indeed, put better ,men than I have done the llke - that is as f a r as missing goes.

When a team is picked for Olympic shooting, polnts to remember are, ensure that you^ men aye well picked. Then allow them to ractise a t full blast. Remember me1 i' my advice as to mixing squads so as to get them accustomed to shooting with various individuals, many with varylng styles. It is most heartening to have a pal on each side of you when on the shooting line and generally worth a couple of birds in a hundred, but "you ain't goin' to have this when you a1.e in Olympic competition". This fact cannot be rammed home hard enough. No doubt i t is all very obvious and so possibly redundant, but I st111 emphasise the point.

I think I am the only Eng!ishman who has had much real expe13ence of standing shoulder to shoulder with real 86% men, by which I mean the averape taken over a t least 1,000

birds, shot a t with one barrel ollly and with 15 02s. of shot. Indeed many of these men have averaged not far short of 88% over several thousand targets, such as Troeh, Ar!e and Wright in the 1920 Olymplc U.S.A. team and the rest of them \\rere not f a r short of this wondelfnl average.

I remembel. once, shooting on the New York Athletic ground and on a very difficult day. Next to me in my squad was o real clay target shooter, and in spite of niy being one who was quite u consistent shot, all I could do was to hammer out an 85/100 ~n the mo~ning and 86/100 in the afternoon -and think myself lucky I hadn't done worse. A slowish shot like my- self (by American standards) was getting b i d s that were soaring, dip- ping, jumping like demented bntter- flies in a gale, but a t the speed he was shooting them, the devastating effects of the mmd hadn't t ~ m e to take effect.

One phobia that I have is snakes. I just hate them. The second time I went to the U.S.A. I wandered about a part one day that I after- wards learned had quite a lot of rattlers about, but not knowing and not seeing any, I really wasn't woi~<ed.

With the approach of the opening of the Victorian duck season a re- minder ar txvo would seem appro- pl'iate. One of the commonest faults with tyro shooters, and many others, is to move too soon in prepamtion for a shot. It i s well to remember, however much that duck may circle ~,ound before they decide to settle, they will finally drop in against the wind, and that i s the lnoment to take them - so not until then should a move be made. It usually pays to let the first birds settle, whether on land or water. This has the added advantage of providing the chance to overcome any excitement a t their first appearance. The placing of artificial decoys need some thought, other~vise their value may be largely wasted. Slielfmed water is necessary, f o ~ in iourrh water these decovs can

To attain the highest degree of skill of which one is canable needs endless practice at movl'ng targets, and that is exactly what clay target shooting provides. However, lack of opportunity rather than lack of keen- ness is sometimes the limiting factor of many who take up shooting. O B I T U A R Y - Mr. J. 0. (Ollie) COX -

Profound regret is expressed a t the s ~ ~ d d e n ~ ~ p a s s @ g ill Sydney 11 on Saturday, January 11, 1964, of Mr. J. 0. (Ollie) Cox, I'resldent and founder of the i\Iangoplah Gun Chlh in the southern Riverina area of New South Wales.

Mr. Cox, in keeping with his renowned interest in all types of sport, was in Sydney attending the Third Cricket Test Match against South Africa a t the Sydney Cricket Ground, when he collapsed in the street. As he was apparently carrying little identification matter with him, i t was well into the night before positive identification could be established, and it was into the early hours of the follow- ing morning before information finally reached his relatives in DIangoplah.

The sport of clay target shooting bas lost a bulwark in Ollie Cox and one whose replacement would appear to he an impassibility.

From his earliest connection with the sport Ollie Cox's name became identified with clay target shooting in all i ts phases. He was far many years a member of the Executive Committee and frequently drove or flew down from his station property a t Mango- plah, just outside Wagga, to attend Executive Committee meetings- always at his awn expense. His wise counsel was of great value to the Association, particularly in the formative years of the organization and the difficult immediate post-war years and to shooters generally.

I t is of interest to recall that i t was Ollie Cox (nearly 20 years ago), a t an Executive Committee meeting, who moved that the Association institute the production of a "bulletin" - which has since grown into the considerably sought af ter publication that "News" is today.

The memory of Ollie Cox can never be obliterated from the minds of those who were privileged to have known him. Some years ago, a t a shoot a t Griffith (N.S.W.), a party of Mangoplah shooters were in attendance, having flown over by chartered plane from Wagga. As the party was hurrying off by car in the gradually failing light to pick up their plane, a noted shooter of the day remarked, "There goes one of the greatest sportsmen I have known," and this statement s ~ ~ r e l y summed up the character of the late Ollie Cox. His wide sporting activities included a considerable interest in horse racing, both as an administrator and owner of several good horses. One successful onslaught he made in Melbourne some years ago was with a horse named Taranta Ra - this geldillg won two races against good-class company a t Flemington. He was for many years President of the N.S.W. Southern District Racing Association.

The funeral took place at Wagga on Wednesday, January 15. and was very largely attended. The A.C.T.A. was onicially represented by Executive Committee member, Mr. Keith Oldfield of Coota- mundra, N.S.W.

Sincerest sympathy and regret i s extended by all connected with the A.C.T.A. to his widow, son John ("Johnno") and daughter DIeg.

Dear Mr. McCullough, I have enjoyed a good year's shoot-

To: 4/1/1964. W. McCullough, Esq., Box 2038 S, G.P.O., Melbourne, C.1. Dear Bill,

It'll be rather difficult for me to pay the registration fee by Janualy 31, as i t might take the 30/- a little longer from Germany to Australia thsn l s a t vnm from Darwin to Mel- " , .... -- .~~~ ~

bourne. However,' don't let me wait tho long for the "News" in 1964 even if you Non't get the money in time.

As you know, Chris Kloubek from the Danvin Gun Club and myself shot in the German Grand in Han- novel.. Being not used to our new guns, to the strange shooting condi- tions and the other "hokuspokus", me didn't do too well. Chris mon a hronze medal and I missed out, although I was well ahead in the trap events, hut completely collapsed a t skeet. But we made new friends, had plenty of fun and took part-that's the main thing.

In October I went to Sweden on an elk hunting trip and shot a small bull. The Swedish hunters are most accurate rifle shots, nice chaps and know how to drink whisky - (the girls aren't too bad, either!).

Here in Germany the hunting season is in full swing now and my trap experience comes in handy, especially on those fast ducks and driven pheasants. Trap shooting here isn't half as popular as in Australia because of high cost of club fees, shells and clays. Hunters usually put in a couple of days on the range just before opening da~r to get their eyes in. But the Grand draws a big crowd, as you'll see on the numbers of the photo. (The chap in the middle is the German range officer.)

A Happy New Year to the A.C.T.A., to all m y fnends m the Darwin and Rum Jungle Gun Club and to you.

Yours faithfully, ARNO H. HOPPE, 3251 Sehwobber, West Germany.
