M: Do you all listen to radio?

R: No

R: I listen to FM.

R: When I go for morning walk, I listen to FM with earphones

M: Which channels do you listen to?

R: 98.3 and 104.7

R: Since mobile has come, I listen to radio in case it is the birthdayof any good music director. Most of the time I listen to Fm as mydaughter will go to 9th now, so it is not right to watch TV for her. There are problems with TV also. They don’t show news items in aconcise form. They show in great details which can harm in the longrun though you enjoy now. Also TV has ruined the thinking capacity ofa child. If you ask a child to close her eyes and imagine a mountain,99pc of the children will not be able to do that. So I have blockedTV. It’s better to listen to songs on FM, at least the picturisationis not there.

M: What is positive in your life today?

R: Positive means in today’s world I don’t think that we should speakthe truth today. None speaks 100pc truth these days. Truth has beenforgotten

R: I think transparency is the main thing.

R: I speak against injustice always. Even if I get beaten for it, it’sok because many times I have got beaten for speaking againstinjustice. E.g. with our college fund, GS bought a bike. I spokeagainst it and got beaten. People are taking bribe of Rs25000 on theroad, I got beaten there also while shouting against it.

M: So speaking the truth, honesty, speak against injustice are thepositives. What is negative?

R: my negative point is that I believe in people very easily. I havebeen fooled many times because of this.

R: Even I agree with him

R: Don't trust anyone today.

R: In my transport business, I have to trust people. If I don’t trustthe driver, then how will I run my business.

R: Even in my catering line, I have to trust people. If I send someoneto buy 20kg raw materials, I can’t stand behind him to see if hebought 20kg or not? I have to trust him.

M: But there is insecurity in our mind, a fear or doubt remains.

R: Sometimes I know that a person will break my trust but still I haveto trust him. I don’t have an option as the work will not be done byme.

R: I have to speak the truth and the lies in my work.

M: So which is the negative – saying the truth or the lie?

R: Everything is negative.

R: Trust is very difficult to build these days. If I trust someone, Iam sure to get fooled.

R: I don’t agree with him.

M: Here we are free to say what we want. He must be saying thisbecause of some experiences in his life so we cannot contradictanyone. Ok, has there been any major change in your life in the last10yrs?

R: In life or in the society?

M: In your life. Here I am talking only about you 8. Finally changesin our life bring about changes in society.

R: The rate at which things are getting expensive these days, it ispinching people very badly.

R: I have had a big change. I used to work in an office and also dobusiness. I used to trust people and do business but this lead tocheating and finally my full business shut down.

R: my age has increased in the last 10yrs. What I could do easily10yrs back cannot be done by me so easily now.

R: My life has improved positively in the last 10yrs. The kind ofcircumstances I had 10yrs back, today in 2014, I am very satisfied.

R: In the last 10 yrs, my business which used to make a lot of profitdoes not make that much profit now. In fact there is no profit now.

M: What are your feelings towards these positive and negative changes?

R: Life will get over like this only with positives and negatives. Wehave to live with it.

R: We have to adjust as per the situations.

M: What does good health mean to you?

R: According to me, good health is to go for a morning walk orswimming in the morning, then come home and eat a restricted meal(after 40) like avoiding spicy and oily food, then it will help usfrom work point of view.

M: Restrictions in food means

R: Restricted means that when we were small we used to go for weddingand eat a lot of mutton and sweets but that needs to be controlled nowand eaten in limited portions, even at home.

R: Earlier it was unlimited and now it is limited.

R: When man is free of tensions and worries, then he will have goodhealth. Tension in terms of work, children’s education etc.. if hedoesn't have all this, then he will have good health like no BP, getgood sleep.

M: So no BP, get good sleep, jogging, all this is good health.

R: I don’t get time to keep my health good or in order. I have lots oftension from morning.

M: But what does good health mean to you?

R: Take adequate rest

R: Looking at today’s conditions, I feel that every 6 months, weshould do a thorough check up.

R: It is not possible to stay healthy these days.

R: When I used to do physical exercise and play, my health was reallygood.

M: Why is it so important to stay healthy?

R: If we are not healthy, then the people dependent on us will fallsick

R: If I am not able to do my work due to bad health, then the 50 otherpeople dependent on me are also not able to do it. if I am not healthythen I am failing myself only. My life will get spoilt.

R: If I get bed ridden

M: Bed ridden is extreme, say about BP, lack of sleep

R: I have such tensions that in the middle of the night I get up andthink what is happening, what I will do later, my son is not studyingfor his 10th. So my sleeps gets spoilt in the middle, then I thinkabout it the whole day, so again I don’t get sleep.

M: Are all of you leading a healthy life?

R: No

R: Not fully because there is no healthy food also.

R: The biggest problem now is fast food and fast life. The rate atwhich we have fast food and fast life, in the next 5yrs, the capitalof diabetes will be India in the world as I read in a magazine calledBJM. The reason is fast food. I had recently met a doctor called Dr.Hom Chowdhury for my policy, he asked me how much oil I consume in amonth. I said 3 kg. He said that in his house his family consumes only500. In that case I said that I will have to eat only boiled food. Hesaid that yes, that is the right thing to do.

M: is he the orthopaedic?

R: yes. He said that to stay healthy I have to give up oil and fastfood. If I don’t, then I will get cholesterol and with cholesterol Iwill get heart blockage and Bp will increase and many other problemswill arise.

R: I have seen my fathers and grandfathers, prior to going out in themorning, used to eat home cooked food and go. Now I can’t even call mywife to make something for me. I have to eat out so that my wife canlie down for some time.

R: I satisfy myself with samosa and tea outside on the road.

R: We don’t exercise so much. We are so busy in our work that we don’tget time to do anything.

R: Everyone is running behind money.

M In the beginning only you said that life is fast.

R: Mental labour is more than physical labour now.

M: is that affecting your health?

R: So people are not able to concentrate on health and give time toit.

R: Earlier I used to walk for 2km and go to work, now there are autosto drop me at my doorstep. Physical activity has reduced.

R: We don’t do any physical work to make us sweat.

M: You go by auto and come by auto

R: Yes. Earlier when I had started my business, I used to carry mygoods on the cycle and get. Then I bought a bike. Now even if I haveto go for 1 km, I feel that I should have got my bike. We have becometotally immobile.

R: I have lot of problems – in tension, sleep does not come. As it isI go to bed at 12, so I am worried when it will be become 3am. so Ikeep getting up at intervals at 1am or 2am to check the time.

M: So you are not getting sleep at a stretch?

R: No

R: I go to bed at 12 and wake up at 5am. I sleep at a stretch, I haveno problems.

R: Work tension

R: Children tension

R: Business tension

M: Any other reason other than tension?

R: Tension is the main. Economical problem leads to tension.

M: So it’s financial pressure.

R: The tension of basic expenditure if not maintained leads totension, deposit comes later.

M: Those who have business, I understand that you all have a lot oftension because you don’t know if tomorrow money will come in or notbut those who are into service, what tension do you have because youknow that your fixed income will come and you will have to manage inthat much money only?

R: Education tension, work pressure, whether my son will do well ornot, he is studying or going out to play.

R: Expenditure is increasing daily.

R: Needs are increasing like now we need chimney, microwave.

R: We have to maintain these gadgets also

R: But that is not throughout the year.

M: So financial problem is the main tension.

R: Yes, to a great extent.

R: my sleeping problem is not due to money but due to irregularlifestyle. E.g. which healthy person gets up at noon from sleep? Evenif someone tells me, I don’t listen. I am responsible for thisdisorder. I have formed this bad habit for the last 3-4yrs. If I haveto come out of it, I will face problems.

M: So that has become your comfort level now?

M: What is good sleep to you?

R: a man needs 6hrs of uninterrupted good sleep.

M: Means without any disturbance or waking up.

R: Yes, then he will not need to sleep though out the day.

R: I don’t get sleep in the night but in the afternoon I sleep from 2-5pm without any disturbance. So my 6 hrs of sleep is complete per dayand is enough for me.

M: So your afternoon sleep is fully complete. There is no question ofgetting up.

R: Yes

R: I never sleep in the afternoon.

R: Good sleep for me is: I go to sleep, get sleep within 5-10mins andif I wake up at 5am directly with no disturbance, then that is goodsleep for me.

M: So what is good sleep – sleep at a stretch for few hours or if Iget undisturbed sleep and feel fresh when I get up?

R: The whole thing – say I go to sleep at 11:30pm, get sleep within10mins, then get up at 5am and feel fresh. If I get up in the night 4-5 times or don’t get sleep due to tension, then I will not be fresh.

M: Soumitra babu, you told me that you don’t get sleep in the nightbecause you are tensed whether you will get up in the morning or noton time?

M: What time did she go to school?

R: I don’t come to know.

M: So basically your problem is the light which your daughter switcheson in the room because of which you don’t get sleep. Otherwise youdon’t have any tension?

R: No

R: I do share broking. It’s an addiction. Indian market opens at 3-3:30pm. Next day , what I will buy, for that I will have to stay awakeand see at what does NASDAQ and Dow Jones closes at 12-12:30am. If Idon’t see that, then I will not come to know of its impact the nextday on the Indian market. I need to study all this. Earlier when mytreatment was on, I used to go to sleep at 12 midnight every day afterfood. But doctor said that it will become an addiction so he told meto sleep only when I am sleepy. So I wait for my normal sleep to comewhich is usually around 2-2:30am when I am very tired.

M: So basically your problem is not due to tensions. It is mostly forwork?

R: Yes, it is my hobby to study all of this.

M: Since when is it going on?

R: Suppose I didn’t sleep in the night and I need to meet a client at7am and that time my wife tells me to do something, there is anirritation then.

M: Then why do you get up in the night for smoking and all?

R: This is due to tension.

M: What tension?

R: In the share market, if you buy for long term, there is lesserrisk. But there is an option called call/put wherein if I buy on 31st

and sell on closing date, my money has often become 0. So that is atension. Now today is already 18th and I have invested lot of money, soI am already in tension.

M: To solve this sleeping disorder problem, what ideas or solutions doyou have or know?

R: The more physical work we do, the better it is for us. But now wetake the auto, don’t walk much, so basically there is no exercise.

M: But that is not possible. What is it that we can do?

R: Easy way is to take medicines.

M: Which medicines?

R: I used to take Valium 5, 4months back. Once when it was not therein the chemist, they recommended me to take Lopez which had similareffect.

M: Which kind of medicines are these?

R: Allopathy

R: The moment you take them, you are in heaven.

M: other than medicines you are saying that walking, exercise andphysical activity also helps?

R: I feel that physical activities help a lot

R: I think in the night if I drink, I get good sleep.

M: Why like that? I want to know how drinks can be a solution?

R: When you drink, it makes the nerves inactive gradually. So yourtension does not stay and you get sleep

R: it makes you tension free.

R: Suppose it becomes 10:30-11:00pm in the night after drinking, ifson is sleeping, then I also have my dinner and sleep immediately sothat there is no sort of disturbance.

M: Not why you don’t get sleep. What made you go to the doctor to askfor medicine?

R: The doctor was my friend.

M: Your problem was there for the last 3-4 yrs. What happened that youwanted to try sleeping pills?

R: My doctor friend told me to start taking these medicines as I thinkthey were new in the market then.

M: Which one?

R: Valium. He told me to take half first and then sleep. I did thatand got good result. Then gradually it became an addiction.

M: Did you discuss with him that you are not getting sleep day afterday?

R: No, I didn’t discuss with him

M: Then why did he give you suddenly?

R: I only told him on my own that I wasn’t getting sleep

M: Exactly, you told him that you were not getting sleep and all?

R: Yes

M: You have the habit of staying awake from class 12?

R: But that is not the cause of my sleeping problem.

R: After my accident, I got panic disorder. These are not sleepingpills, these pills are for the nerves. I got such a problem of panicdisorder that I was bedridden at home for 6 months. I had to undergophysiotherapy at home and got mental problems too to the extent that Ididn’t know whether I could put my leg on the floor or not. I just gotsaved from death’s mouth. I couldn’t even move my neck. It was fixedwith a collar bone. I couldn’t even open my mouth. I could open onlythis much and somehow I was fed with a spoon. For the pain, doctor hadgiven me sleeping pills. After taking it for 1.5-2yrs, it became anaddiction with me. All my pain had gone, my mental disorder alsoreduced but I could feel that I have got addicted to my sleepingpills. Then I spoke to the doctor. He changed the medicine and gaveme. He changed it from Algium to Adivan to Campose.

M: Did the doctor change the medicine for you also? Did he change foryou only or for others too?

R: Algium is Alpazoram, Campose is Zaizipum, Adivan is Lorazipum(01:15:43-01:15:47 – not sure of the medical terms used). All 3medicines belong to 3 different groups. All 3 work on the centralnervous system. All 3 have different effects. I was getting addictedto them so doctor was getting changing them for me. Towards the end, Iused to put Cycon and have it. then finally doctor decided thatwhenever you feel sleepy, you sleep.

M: Because of your accident, doctor only used to change the medicinefor you?

R: Yes

M: Did he change the dose also?

M: Who did it for you?

M: Did you take massage before the medicines also or did it startafter taking medicines?

R: I was always addicted to massage. Then I saw that instead of takingmedicines even massage helped me in getting good sleep. In fact mybody was more relaxed and got better sleep with massage.

R: There are side effects. E.g. The skin of Cincona tree is consumeddirectly. Then they dip it in alcohol and mix it 3 times. Differenttypes of strengths are formed and it becomes homeopathy. Then the HRdepartments puts different preservatives in it and forms tabletscalled Ampicilin. They are all the skin of Cincona tree but indifferent forms of Allopathy, homeopathy and Ayurvedic. I don’tremember but people had taken this medicine of one Ayurvedic doctor, got side effects and so many people died. It had happened 1-1.5yrsback. I have read it on my own in the newspaper. M: What kind of problems are solved with ayurvedic?

R: I don’t know as I have not had it

R: Without having how can I say?

R: In our country, everything is based on ayurveda. India and Chinaare the major Ayurvedic hubs. Whether it is homeopath or allopath, they are all based on ayurvedic. It is the base in our country.

R: But the processing of ayurvedic is not correct in our country.

M: You are saying because you know the details but for people like us,why don’t we use ayurveda medicines?

R: Don't trust it

M: Why?

R: As we have no idea about it.

M: Why?

R: Because there are no advertisements regarding it.

R: There are allopathy doctors everywhere. When my collar bone gotfractured, I first went to an orthopaedic doctor and not to anayurvedic doctor. Orthopaedic means allopathy.

M: So basically there are no doctors, no advertisements

R: Procedure is not right.

M: There is no awareness amongst people

R: There are side effects like suppose you take a pain killer, youmust take digene also with it.

M: Why do you need digene?

R: You must take digene with pain killer

M: Why?

R: As it pressurizes the liver

M: Ok, allopathy puts pressure on the liver. Does it remove the causefrom the roots?

R: No

M: But in ayurvedic, it removes the cause from the roots?

R: I have not experienced it so I don’t know but that is what we haveheard.

M: What can be done in Ayurvedic so that it develops a trust in youall?

R: One is advertisement

R: There are no doctors also as such for ayurveda.

R: There are no hospitals also

R: Whoever is selling must have a proper license to sell ayurvedicmedicines so that we know that the processing is correct. There aremany big companies like Himalaya. They sell nothing but Ayurvedicmedicines. They have got ayurvedic antacid too. Central governmentshould take such steps

R: Baidyanath is also an ayurvedic company.

R: Dabur. These are all famous companies but we don’t know anythingabout other companies.

M: Any other companies that sell Ayurvedic medicines?

R: Chanak Pharmaceuticals – another big company

R: Even Ramdev has ayurvedic stuff.
