America Perfected the March from Magna Carta toDeclaration of Independence to the Gettysburg Address

HappyBirthdayAmerica!

“Four score and seven years agoour fathers brought forth on this

continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to

the proposition that all men arecreated equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civilwar, testing whether that nation, or anynation so conceived and so dedicated,

can long endure. We are met on a greatbattlefield of that war. We have come

to dedicate a portion of that field, as afinal resting place for those who heregave their lives that that nation mightlive. It is altogether fitting and proper

that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot

dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- wecannot hallow -- this ground. The brave

men, living and dead, who struggledhere, have consecrated it, far above

our poor power to add or detract. Theworld will little note, nor long

remember what we say here, but it cannever forget what they did here. It is

for us the living, rather, to be dedicatedhere to the unfinished work which theywho fought here have thus far so noblyadvanced. It is rather for us to be herededicated to the great task remainingbefore us -- that from these honoreddead we take increased devotion to

that cause for which they gave the lastfull measure of devotion -- that wehere highly resolve that these dead

shall not have died in vain -- that thisnation, under God, shall have a new

birth of freedom -- and thatgovernment of the people, by the

people, for the people, shall not perishfrom the earth."--- Abraham Lincoln,

November 19, 1863

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president ofthe United States from 1861 until his

assassination in April 1865, gave Americathe famous Gettysburg Address

proclaiming liberty and equality. He ledthe nation through the American CivilWar, its bloodiest war and its greatest

moral, constitutional, and political crisis. To truly celebrate America, onehas to know who we are, wherewe came from, where we arenow, where we are going, andthat well-intentioned

Communism and its light-weight sibling,Socialism, are wholly inconsistent withAmerican Exceptionalism. And thenthere is the many "I"s coming together tobe "We": E Pluribus Unum.

Time has come for all of us to bettercomprehend who and what we are, afterall "the voice" of the "Silent Majority, albeit, pretty loud on its own, has itsloudspeaker in our POTUS - PresidentTrump - who is incessantly causing - byTweet and act - an "American Spring"cleaning (with results akin to "ArabSpring" a la conservatism) - and ourinstitutions are waking up to be lawful &robust - as if anew. I fear that someAmericans don't really understandAmerica, ignore as they do history'snuanced journey and impossibly imposepresent-day mores on yesteryears, andmany well-meaning folks who took"compassion" to heart, are violating lawsin a nation of laws. So, a look back iswise, as it's timely.

"We the People" are the beginning"words" of American Exceptionalism'ssecond of two founding documents - ourhallowed Constitution. Of course, the

Declaration Of Independence, written bymy hero Thomas Jefferson, created the"right" to do so. The Constitution has it'sembedded Separated Powers regime -structural separation, to force an ad hocjoinder - thereby squeezing more publicgood from power by discord. America isat her best when we are divided on policy, but united as a nation. America First, then, is a predicate to legitimateargument.

One-half of us love Donald J. Trumpand one-half of us can't get rid of himfast enough. That's our America since2016 - even without foreign meddling -especially President Putin's return "gift"to Hillary for her meddling in his priorre-election; and Putin won despite her.Hillary lost by cheating Bernie Sandersof a "fair fight," and got the wrath of hisardent supporters and Trump'ssupporters voting in lockstep to elect"The Donald," to be president of theseUnited States of America.

Magna Carta. While "Richard theLionhearted" was off in the Middle Eastfighting the Crusades, the Barons gotKing John to limit the King's unlimitedsovereign rights, thereby sharing some

of the King's sovereign powers with thehordes of landed gentry. This was aseismic event diluting the power ofKings. Independently of the Normans, a

prior Saxon, Thomas Becket, asArchbishop of Canterbury, succeeded inimposing, with his death, "Separation ofChurch & State." This is embodied in ourBill of Rights.

American ExceptionalismFast forward several centuries to 1776 -

3 years after the American Revolutionstarted in Boston with the Indian Tea"bopping" in its harbor during the"Boston Tea Party." Well, "We the People"were all landed gentry, and excludedordinary everyday people, such asindentured servants. Of course, itexcluded slaves - our Original Sin - ourfellow Americans were "3/5" of a person.

Gettysburg Address: Recipe of honestgovernance - "for the people."

Fast forward once again - and it tookthe Civil War and a Republican YankeePresident Abraham Lincoln to removethe Constitutional soulful damnation ofthe 3/5th of a person, aka our OriginalSin, and "We the people" was now"wholesome": 1 for 1, for each and everyone of us, landed gentry or not, counted!Gettysburg Address is the everlastingtest of legitimacy of our governmentand our leaders, as only if it helps "thepeople," are they legitimate.

But what ails us is that we - and almostall of us grew up after WWII - and sawthe great American Middle class as apermanent feature, rather than theunintended consequence of the GI Bill:free education for the returningvictorious GIs. Well, the GI Bill ran out,and with it the Great American MiddleClass. Congress, are you listening?

During Reagan's time we were thegreatest creditor nation in the comity ofnations. Sadly, today, the world's greatestdebtor nation. Every president betweenReagan and Obama is responsible forthis debacle. Enter Donald Trump - anerrant candidate for president runningto run, not win. That's why he had asmuch fun as he did. But he connected tolots of people who wanted to say "MerryChristmas," or "I want White Power in aWhite-majority country" or "when Iorder coffee or a burger, I want to hearEnglish, not Spanish or some otherlanguage, like Hindi. RememberCharlottesville.

because we loved what America was andwanted to live and blossom here. We didnot come to change her, even as we havethe duty of citizenship to protect herfrom enemies foreign and domestic.Immigrants come to embroider America, not conquer her.

"MAGA" became a battle-cry - that Iembraced as a Democrat, who honorsSenator John McCain as an AmericanHero - because I had been issuing awarning since Bill Clinton days in the1990's, as I saw the American Dream inthe Intensive Care Unit, and objected toIndian Call Centers - as they took awayjobs from single or divorced Americanmothers whose main skill was speakingand connecting well to their neighbors.Well, my warnings were ignored on thealtar of profit, until Trump harnessedthe anger, and unexpectedly mined it allthe way to the presidency.

No Conspiracy; Obstruction; andSenate Refusing to Convict

Watching the events in real time, I wasrepeatedly struck by most of Trump'slawyers being carnival-worthy - leavingaside criminal-fixer Michael Cohen. Hadcandidate-Trump and POTUS had reallawyers, he would not need "loyalty oath"from then-FBI Director Jim Comey. Hewould know he can't be guilty of"conspiracy" without an express or a tacitin-line-Of-sight "nod & a wink"; whichwere not present, even if fantasied. Noneed to bash Jeff Sessions' properRecusal, no need to dangle pardons, andsurely no need to fire Mueller. Indeed, cooperating with Mueller was the path todisinfectant sunshine and provenpatriotism. Same cooperation was goodfor Russia - indeed, I so requested

publicly. Instead, obstruction of justice -interfering in legal process is obstruction- now haunts. Given our almost evenlydivided nation, the Senate will notconvict. Wacky result of legalmalpractice of the highest order, damning a presidency that otherwise hasdisrupted the world to get more forAmerica. Yes - improve our balance sheet- even as Trump engages with our"enemies" head-on. DPRK's ChairmanKim is an example. Europe paying morefor NATO, another. Pacific Fleet renamedIndo-Pacific, China finally challenged tobe "fair" - as they have been unfairlyripping us off since 1971, and engagingwith Russia's Vladimir Putin - not likeBarack's secretive "hot mike" - "I willhave greater flexibility after theelection," but in broad daylight beingfriendly and jovial, while in private toughand sanctioning.

The state of our union is very strong, and reflected in many facets. Of singularimportance is our military's condition -and it is awash in cash, being rebuilt andexpanded, including a Space Force. Onecan almost see "Star Trek" as NASA'snext project; I hope they find CaptainKirk and Spock. As for our "Ballot Box,"the core keeper of our sovereignty, weneed to make it hack-proof, and socialmedia Meddling-Free. Congress are youlistening?

Our 2020 presidential sweepstakes areon, and socialism or communism - like inthe 1920's and 1930's - is trying to make acomeback - even as the USSR, and nowRussia have abandoned both! Let mestate, what to me is obvious: No Democratrunning can win and become POTUS -even after Bob Mueller's Testimony - ifs/he embraces socialism or communism.Oh, to my 2016-favorite Joe Biden, knock

it off with the dead-on-arrival "apologytour." If it had been me, as then chair ofSenate Judiciary, I'd be proud of givingAnita Hill the witness seat - as that wasthe maximum power of JudiciaryChairman. Biden was not her lawyer, nother judge, and the Senate wasn't a trial.Meekness is not deliberative;appeasement is not a policy; andAmericans can't stand a wuss! EvenCongresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, now a legal force to reckon within New York, no one can ever accuse ofbeing a "wuss." Worth remembering forall candidates: President Trump is a NewYorker, and a As Frank Sinatra said: Ifyou can make it in New York, you canmake it anywhere.

At the heart of the American Dream isthe Declaration's merit-based "pursuit ofhappiness" - not guaranteed being happylike everyone else - as in communism orit's lighter sibling, socialism. The "pursuitof happiness" was intended as an eternaljourney for each future generation toundertake, not as a "dead-end" destinationas Communism and Socialism cause.Dead ends are inconsistent withAmerican Exceptionalism.

We have the greatest nation in humanhistory - we call "home." We need to makeour friends and family love and honorAmerica. We need to treat America as ourhome: windows open, and door closed.Only those we want to come in, areallowed in. Compassion is a "safety valve"that ought to be used sparingly when the"law" becomes "an ass". DACA is anexample. Congress, are you listening?

Happy Birthday America! We loveyou...

UK denies supporting violent HK protestsas China media slam 'Western ideologues'LONDON/BEIJING (TIP): British

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said onJuly 4 that he had not backed violentprotests in Hong Kong, after Chinesestate media blamed "Westernideologues" for fomenting unrest in theformer British colony.

Hundreds of protesters broke into theHong Kong legislature on Monday after ademonstration marking the anniversaryof the return to Chinese rule in 1997under a "one country, two systems"formula that includes freedoms notenjoyed in mainland China, includingthe right to protest.

That followed weeks of protestsagainst a now-suspended extradition billthat opponents say would undermineHong Kong's much-cherished rule of lawand give Beijing powers to prosecuteactivists in mainland courts, which arecontrolled by the Communist Party.

China has stepped up a war of wordswith Britain over Hong Kong, especiallyafter Hunt warned of consequences ifChina neglects commitments made whenit took back Hong Kong to allow its wayof life for at least 50 years.

State media in particular has blamedLondon, Washington and other Westerncapitals for offering succour to thedemonstrators.

"Ideologues in Western governmentsnever cease in their efforts to engineerunrest against governments that are notto their liking, even though their actionshave caused misery and chaos in countryafter country in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia," the officialChina Daily said in an editorial.

"Now they are trying the same trick inChina," the English-language newspapersaid. Hunt, speaking to BBC radio, reiterated his condemnation of theviolence.

"Let me be clear what I said. I said thatI condemned, and we as the UnitedKingdom condemn, all violence and that

people who supported the pro-democracydemonstrators would have been verydismayed by the scenes they saw," saidHunt, who is vying to become Britain'snext prime minister.

China has said Britain has no moreresponsibility for Hong Kong. Britainsays it still considers the JointDeclaration in 1984 on the terms of thereturn of Hong Kong, which guaranteesits freedoms, to be valid.

"I don't think it's a big surprise thatChina would react that way but theyneed to understand that Britain is acountry that honours its internationalobligations and what I was saying wassomething very uncontroversial, actually, which is that we signed anagreement in 1984 which lasts for 50years and we would expect all sides tohonour that agreement," Hunt said.

"Hong Kong has an independentjudiciary and it's not for me as foreignsecretary of the UK to second guess howthat judiciary works. What I was sayingwas that there would be seriousconsequences if the legally bindinginternational agreement between the UKand China, if that was violated." OnWednesday, British Prime MinisterTheresa May also said China must

respect the rights and freedoms ofpeople in Hong Kong and that she hadbeen in touch with Beijing to raiseconcerns.

Hunt warned on Tuesday ofconsequences if China did not abide bythe Sino-British Joint Declaration. Hiscomments were met by a sharp rebukefrom China's ambassador to the UK, whotold Britain to keep its hands off HongKong.

Speaking at a daily news briefing inBeijing, Chinese Foreign Ministryspokesman Geng Shuang did not offerany new criticism about Britain havingthe day before accused Hunt of being"shameless" for his remarks on HongKong.

"For the time being today, I'll restrainmyself and won't say anymore. But ifcertain people in Britain obstinatelystick to the wrong path, and keeprepeating their mistakes, then I fear Imay have more to say."

Widespread damage inside theLegislative Council building, whereprotesters smashed furniture anddaubed graffiti over chamber walls, forced the government to close it for twoweeks.

The Legislative Council Commissionis due to hold a closed-door specialmeeting at an undisclosed venue later onThursday.

The China Daily accused Westernforces of instigating unrest against HongKong's government "as a means to putpressure on the central government".

"The violent behaviour that theseWestern agitators are emboldeningtramples on the rule of law in Hong Kongand undermines its social order," it said.

An editorial in the widely read tabloidThe Global Times, published by theCommunist Party's People's Daily, criticised Hunt's comments and said "theUK's diplomacy toward China will payfor his behaviour". Reuters

Irish lawyer who abused, spat on Air India crew found dead at her house

BRONZEFIELD (TIP): An Irishnational and human rights lawyer wasfound dead at her house in England’sEast Sussex on June 1.

According to The Telegraph, 50-year-old Simone Burns allegedly committedsuicide. Burns is the same lawyer, whowas jailed for six months in April thisyear for spitting at a flight attendantduring a foul-mouthed racist rant aftershe was refused more wine on theMumbai-London flight. Burns wasreleased from Bronzefield women'sprison on licence, or parole, on May 20and was found dead at the foot of theBeachy Head cliffs in the south-east ofEngland, 13 days later.

“The body of a woman found at BeachyHead on June 1 has been identified asthat of Simone Burns from Hove,” aSussex police spokesperson was quotedas saying. “The death is not being treated

as suspicious and the next of kin havebeen informed. The matter has beenpassed to the coroner’s officer,” thespokesperson added.

Following her death, friends said thatthe sentence had a severe impact onBurns, whose mid-air rant went viral onsocial media. In the Air India flight,Burns, who had worked with refugees, went on a racist rant against the flightcrew. Burns was served three bottles ofwine on a nine-hour flight, but shedemanded more. After, she was refused,Burns went on a racist rant and wascaught on camera. In the video, thelawyer could be heard saying: “I amworking for all your people. The f*****gRohingyas, the f*****g people of all Asia, for you, an international criminallawyer. Don’t get any money for it. Butyou can’t even give me a f*****g glass ofwine, is that correct?”

She also called staff “Indian money-grabbing c***s” and smoked in thelavatories. Burns, born in NorthernIreland and living in Hove in England, was also ordered to pay 300 poundscompensation to the person sheassaulted, with the judge saying that"spitting straight into a crew member'sface at close range is a particularlyinsulting and upsetting act".

A member of the Air India cabin crewdescribed her conduct as unlikeanything he had seen during his 34-yearaviation career. The judge at IsleworthCrown Court said he was satisfied theoffence was racially aggravated and thelanguage Burns used would have beenextremely upsetting for the airline staff.

"This is not a lady who has a drinkproblem. This is not a woman who has adrug problem. This is totally out ofcharacter," he said. (PTI)

NEW YORK (TIP): If we aregetting access to 'high-speed internetconnection', then it's all because ofNarinder Singh Kapany. Had it notbeen for Narinder's exuberance, wewouldn't have been surfing the blazingfast internet. Not only about theinternet, Narinder was even able tostamp his authority on laser surgeriesand high-speed communications. He ispopularly known as the father of'Fiber Optics'. Narinder Singh Kapany

was the first person in the world whointroduced the term 'Fiber Optics'.

Hailing from Moga, Punjab,Narinder Singh announced hisarrival to the world when he was bornin 1927. He successfully graduatedfrom Agra University and then wenton to do PhD at Imperial College,London. He carried out an intenseresearch not only in high-speedcommunications but also medicalimaging from OFC networks to

endoscopic to laser surgery. This goesto show that if there is no NarinderSingh, then there is no internet, nolaser surgery and no high-speedcommunication.

Narinder Singh, the Indian-bornAmerican physicist hogged thelimelight for becoming the firstperson in the world to depict thatlight can travel in bent glass fibers. His research paper captioned "AFlexible Fiberscope, using StaticScanning" appeared in the scientificjournal Nature in its January 2, 1954issue and opened the door forinstruments such as endoscopes andlaser probes.

Kapany then spiced it up bypublishing his first paper in OpticaActa in February 1955 named'Transparent Fibers for theTransmission of Optical Images'.

Kapany kept on continuing his goodwork. As an author, he published over100 scientific papers and four bookson optoelectronics. He has lectured toseveral national and internationalscientific societies. His famous articleon Fiber optics in Scientific Americanin 1960 coined the new term (Fiberoptics). Meet Narinder Singh Kapany - The Father of ‘Fiber Optics’

Before the debate Kamala Harrishad the name recognitionproblem. Vice President Bidenwas well known and wasenjoying a commanding lead in

the polls. Kamala Harris had to formulatestrategy to become most competitive. Sheknew the power and influence of thenational TV audience could make adifference. Therefore, she came to thedebate very well prepared.

Born to her mother from Chennai, Indiaand father from Jamaica, both Ph.D.'s,Kamala Harris is a smart student and hadaccumulated political skills by serving asSan Francisco's District Attorney andCalifornia's Attorney General, before shewas elected U.S.Senator, first for IndianAmerican.

Kamala Harris knew that unless she ismost competitive with Biden and Sanders, she had no chance to emerge out of 20candidates. Thus, she applied theprinciple: WHO INFUENCES WHOMWHEN WHERE AND HOW IS THEESSENCE OF POLITICS.

She was well aware that the nationaldebate would draw a large audience and ifshe makes a difference she could break out.She turned out to be right. The seconddebate drew an audience of 18 millionpeople against 24 million for first Trumpdebate.

She knew that once she impresses such alarge audience, political equilibrium andpolls would change. She was right. Howdid she do it? What was her strategy?

NBC had several anchors, who were notwell organized. The debate was not wellprogrammed. Different anchors wereasking questions after questions givingvery little time for the candidate to answer. As a result, the competition to be heard wasstiff. It was not easy to break in especiallywhen several were attempting to speak. There was total confusion and no order. This is where Kamala Harris emerged as abig winner. Her tactics and strategysucceeded.

Kamala Harris was bent upon taking thebig elephant Biden blocking her march tothe convention.

Gentlemen, you can't fight here, this isthe debate stage! Senator Kamala Harris'sfirst attempt at a breakout moment in thisdebate was a painfully rehearsed linedesigned to be dropped the minute therewas some crosstalk she could break into:

"Hey guys, America does not want towitness a food fight. They want us to knowhow we are going to put food on their table."

It won immediate applause, sustainedapplause, undermining their party'spolitical well-being. This is a debate.Everyone on stage is supposed to bemaking a case for why they should bepresident, which when facing other

candidates in an election, is traditionallydone by drawing distinctions betweenyourself and your opponents.

More broadly, the line speaks to the self-defeating tendency of Democrats toimagine that their own affinity forcompromise reflects the median voter'spreference for conciliatory politics. Peoplesay they have partisan conflict, yes-butthey vote for people who draw sharpdistinctions between themselves and their(negatively defined)opponents. It was agood line for Harris in the moment, but itwas a cynical line masquerading as a pleafor unity.

“I believe you are not a racist. It washurtful to hear you talk about thereputations of two U.S.Senators whobuilt their reputations and career onsegregation of race in this country. Andit was not only that, but you also workedwith them to oppose bussing. And youknow, there was a little girl in Californiawho was part of the Second Class tointegrate her public schools and she wasbussed to school every day and that littlegirl was me."

Almost immediately after she punchedBiden, a video of Kamala Harris as a childdressed for school was circulated in thesocial media.

Biden was flustered, caught off-guard bythis unexpected expression of livedexperience. Biden was not just criticizedfor his nostalgia play. He was confrontedwith the fact that his efforts as a youngsenator would have ended one of thecountry's few attempts to make equaltreatment a reality, to give black studentsthe kind of education that white studentstook for granted . And while it is temptingto portray this as ancient history, it is not.Harris was born in 1964, just three monthsafter President Johnson signed the CivilRights Bill. Biden joined the Senate in 1973.It was 1977 when Biden introduced Bill thatwould, in his words, "strike at the injustice

of court-ordered busing."A string of recent polls suggest that

Kamala Harris's performance in the debatelast week has propelled her campaign forthe Democratic presidential nomination inJuly 2020. A Quinnipiac University poll ofDemocrats and Democratic leaning votersnationally showed Kamala Harris, whosecriticism of Biden's record on race was oneof the most discussed moments of thesecond debate last week, gainingsignificant momentum in the campaign.

KAMALA HARRIS POLLS AT 20% INTHE QUINNIPIAC POLL, TRAILINGFRONT RUNNING BIDEN BY JUST 2

POINTS.Other polls also show strong support for

the California Democrat. A SuffolkUniversity/USA Today poll of likely IowaDemocratic caucus goers also showed herin second place to Biden. The former VicePresident led that poll with 24% ofrespondents saying they support him, and15.6% reported favoring Harris.

In a poll of Democrats and Democraticleaning independents conducted by CNNand SSRS in the days after the debate, 17%of respondents said they supported Harris, again placing her in second place to Biden. That represented a jump from 8% from themonth before.

After the second debate, it is clear thatboth Biden and Sanders have lost theirmomentum to the women candidates,Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren.56% of the primary voters are women. Ifso, it is possible that the voters may preferto elect a woman.

ROADMAP TO NOMINATIONI list below the number of delegates from

early States till March 3, 2020: Iowa 49; NewHampshire 33; Nevada 48; S.C. 63 - total of193. CA 495; Texas 262; NY 270, MA 114, IL184, FL 248, MI 147. Before March 3, wewould have elected 193. By the end ofMarch, two thirds of all delegates would

have been elected. Therefore, if Kamala Harris does

reasonably well in Iowa, NH, S.C. andNevada, she would become the frontrunner on March 3 after the primariesbecause CA has 495 delegates. Right now,the wind in California is blowing in herfavor. Biden has lost his territory big.

Kamala Harris has already tested thenational waters thru her first debate. It iseasier for her to challenge her competitorsBiden, Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren in thesecond and future debates. Kamala Harris iscontinuing to receive wide media coverage.

STRATEGIC SKILLS AND ABILITY TOCHALLENGE THE OPPONENT IN THEGENERAL ELECTION WILL BE THEDECIDING FACTOR FOR SELECTINGTHE NOMINEE. Based on KamalaHarris' performance and hercompetitiveness, there is no doubt in mymind that she will be able to convince thedelegates at the nominating conventionthat she is second to none. PatrickBuchanan, political pundit and the formerSpeaker, Newt Gingrich have also said thatKamala Harris is likely to be the candidate.

Winning the nomination is one thing. Can Kamala Harris challenge PresidentTrump in the General Election inNovember 2020? Will she able to drawworking class white votes from the rust beltstates of PA, WI, OH, MI? Will themoderate and conservative White womenvote for her? Will she compromise toomuch with the extreme left to get thenomination but only to lose in the generalelection? Can she suggest a workablebipartisan solution to the Immigrationproblem? These questions cannot beanswered now until the political processtakes place. If Kamala Harris clinches thenomination for the President from theDemocratic Party, it would be a greatachievement for her, and the IndianAmericans will be proud.

9THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, JULY 5, 2019 PERSPECTIVE

By Sandeep Chakravorty

India could yet lead the world on water conservation

"Water is essential tolife, yet 844 million

people in the world - 1 in9 - lack access to it.

According to a report bythe World Economic

Forum, the water crisisis the #4 global risk in

terms of impact tosociety.

Access to safe watercan protect and save

lives, just because it'sthere. Access to safe

water has the power toturn time spent into

time saved, when it'sclose and not hours

away. Access to safewater can turn problemsinto potential: unlocking

education, economicprosperity, and

improved health. In India, "Six times the

population of the UnitedStates lives without a

household waterconnection. These

people, in particularwomen and children,

must spend time to getwater, instead of

working or going toschool or caring for

their families".(Water.org)

The author is sanguine that the creation of ministry of Jal Shakti by Prime Minister Narendra Modi willaddress the problem of inadequate access to safe water, removing the "extreme water stress felt by 600

million people in India".- EDITOR

The biggest disruptor in the newgovernment of Prime MinisterNarendra Modi for India is by farthe creation of a ministry of JalShakti. The merger of the

ministries of water resources, riverdevelopment, Ganga rejuvenation, anddrinking water and sanitation bringsabout a much-needed integrated approachfor India's water issues. Water will be thelimiting factor to India's growth.According to a 2018 NITI Aayog report, 600million Indians face high to extreme waterstress and about 200,000 people die everyyear because of inadequate access to safewater. By 2030, the country's water demandis projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for millionsand an eventual 6% loss in the country'sgross domestic product (GDP). However, ifthe Jal Shakti ministry, the one ministryon which the future depends, achieves itsobjectives, all that will change.

Addressing an election rally before the2019 Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Modisaid, "After constructing toilets and givingdignity to women, I will focus my next termon ensuring clean drinking water." Thecreation of the Jal Shakti ministry and theadoption of an integrated approach towater issues formed part of the BharatiyaJanata Party's vision. Gajendra SinghShekhawat, the minister of Jal Shakti, hashit the ground running, adopting aninclusive approach by spelling out hisvision of partnership with states. In hisinterview with India Today on 8 June,Shekhawat saw India's water challenge asan opportunity to involve stakeholders. Heis keen on the use of India's traditionalwater conservation knowledge whoseneglect has brought us to the precipice of awater disaster. He also promised "nirmal"or clean Ganga in two years.

"Nal se Jal" (tap water) for everyone by2024 is a delayed yet essential goal for Indiato break into the middle-income league andbecome a global economic power. It is notdifficult to imagine how much economic

activity this goal-setting will engender, potentially contributing billions to India'sGDP through theconstruction/rehabilitation of reservoirs, their linking, the laying of pipes andconstruction of tanks, among other civilworks. Its impact on the nation's healthwill also be transcendental, as mostdiseases in India are water-borne. Nal seJal is also a natural companion of SwachhBharat and the National Toilet Mission, which cannot be sustained without wateravailability in every household. TheNational Democratic Alliance governmenthas achieved ambitious goals before, be itthe 72 million Ujjwala connections, takingelectricity to every village and 20 millionhouseholds, constructing 92 million toiletsin less than five years, and the opening ofmore than 300 million Jan Dhan accounts.Making piped water reach every householdis daunting, but the ability to achieve it isthere. It is absolutely "Mumkin hai"(possible). If not now, when?

Only 4% of the available water in Indiais used for drinking, whereas 80% is usedfor irrigation with rampant inefficiencies.About 4,000 liters of water is used inPunjab to produce 1 kg of rice, though 300liters is sufficient. The first charge ofIndia's water must go to drinking water, followed by crop and then industrialproduction. Furthermore, placing wateron top of the conservation pyramidautomatically leads to conservation of soiland forests, and forests make water. Themantra of water conservation is age-oldand simple: hold it where it falls, in pits, wells, trenches, reservoirs or ponds. Thisprevents run-off and soil erosion, recharges aquifers and replenishes sub-soil moisture, critical for plant growth andsurvival. I speak from my experience in theearly 1990s when I spent five years of myyouth in rural India espousing soil andwater conservation.

Living in New York, I marvel at the city'swater supply system, which provides theworld's best potable water. Even

restaurants serve tap water. The city has anetwork of conservation watersheds, reservoirs and aqueducts with almost 95%water supplied by gravity, conservingenergy. Institutional frameworks exist forevery aspect, be it conservation of thewatershed, reservoirs, distribution andpricing. Watershed conservation is thecentral principle for providing drinkingwater. Even corporate water bottlers suchas Poland advertise the watersheds theyprotect to promote their products. It is nota pipedream to expect such a reality inIndia.

Many states have already undertakenpath-breaking work. Telangana'sBhagiratha project is worth emulatingacross India. Maharashtra's JalyuktShivar Abhiyan has undertaken waterconservation work in 16,522 villages.Unfortunately, rainfall has been poor thisyear, so the impact of the work is not felt. However, this is bound to change in thecoming years when real water harvestingkicks in.

There is also a great synergy betweenbringing water to all households and thesocio-cultural-spiritual movementsgaining ground in India around saving therivers, spearheaded by people such aswaterman Rajinder Singh and JaggiVasudev. As Vasudev recently said, "JalShakti is a landmark step for revitalizationand conservation of our rivers and waterbodies." They are opinion makers and havefar reaching influence on people. Themerger of their objectives with nationalpriorities augurs well for India. On thelines of the International Solar Alliancethat India pioneered, we may lead theworld on water conservation from JalShakti to Bharat Shakti to Vishwa Shakti.

Imran Khan to hold maiden meetingwith Donald Trump on July 22

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Prime MinisterImran Khan will meet Donald Trump forthe first time on July 22 and their focuswill be on refreshing bilateral relations, which was hit after the US Presidentpublicly criticised Pakistan, cancelledmilitary aid and asked it to do more tofight terrorism.

Khan will make his maiden trip to theUnited States on the invitation ofPresident Trump, Foreign OfficeSpokesperson Muhammad Faisalannounced during his weekly pressconference here on Thursday.

The relations between Pakistan andthe US nose-dived after President Trumplast year accused Islamabad of givingnothing to Washington but “lies anddeceit” and providing “safe haven” toterrorists.

Khan had said in January 2018 thatmeeting Trump would be a “bitter pill”to swallow should he become Pakistan’sprime minister in elections later thatyear, but added “I would meet him.” Hewon the elections and was sworn in asPrime Minister in August last year.

During Prime Minister Khan’s visit, the focus will be on “refreshing bilateralrelations,” Faisal told reporters.

The announcement of the meetingbetween the two leaders comes a dayafter the US designated the Balo-chistanLiberation Army (BLA) as a globalterrorist group and Pakistan booked 13top leaders of the banned Jamaat-udDawah (JuD), including its chief andMumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed,in nearly two dozen cases for terrorfinancing and money laundering underthe Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The Department of the Treasury hasdesignated Saeed as a SpeciallyDesignated Global Terrorist, and the US,since 2012, has offered a USD 10 millionreward for information that brings himto justice. Saeed-led JuD is believed to bethe front organisation for the Lashkar-e-Toiba, which is responsible for carrying

out the Mumbai attacks that claimedlives of 166 people, including Americans. It had been declared as a foreignterrorist organisation by the US in June2014. Last month, Foreign Minister ShahMehmood Qureshi said President Trumphad invited Prime Minister Khan inJune but he could not undertake the visitbecause of the budget session.

He also said that talks between the twoleaders would focus on “importantregional matters”.

Trump was consistent in his criticismof Pakistan after launching his SouthAsia and Afghanistan strategy in 2017.

The US has repeatedly asked Pakistanto abide by its UN Security Councilcommitments to deny terrorists safehaven and block their access to funds.

In September, the Trumpadministration cancelled USD 300million in military aid to Islamabad fornot doing enough against terror groupslike the Haqqani Network and Talibanactive on its soil. Trump criticisedPakistan in a Twitter post back inNovember, saying Islamabad was notdoing enough to stop terrorism.

In March, President Trump indicated

his readiness to meet Pakistan’s newleadership, amidst the ongoing peacetalks between the US and the Talibanfacilitated by Islamabad to end the brutalwar in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan -- we’ll be meeting withPakistan. I think our relationship rightnow is very good with Pakistan,” Trumpsaid at the end of a White House mediainteraction when a journalist asked himto comment on the current situationbetween India and Pakistan.

Rahul Gandhi vows to fight RSS 10 times harder

NEW DELHI (TIP): RahulGandhi on Thursday pledged to fightthe Sangh-BJP “ten times harder”,belying the notion that the electoralrout has drained him of the will tostruggle on against a dauntingopponent.

Soon after he had pleaded “notguilty” in a Mumbai court in adefamation case filed by an RSSactivist and advocate, Rahul wasasked if his fight would continue.

“Of course it will continue. It isgoing to intensify. The way I foughtin the last five years, ten timesharder than that,” he said.

Rahul faces around two dozenlawsuits across the country, mostlyfiled by Sangh-BJP leaders andsupporters over statements he hadmade during election campaigns.

Dhrutiman Joshi had filedThursday’s case over Rahul’sremark that “anybody who speaksagainst the ideology of the BJP,against the ideology of the RSS, ispressured, beaten, attacked and evenkilled”.

Rahul had made the comment inthe context of the 2017 murder ofjournalist Gauri Lankesh inBangalore. Since he has pleaded “notguilty”, the trial will now begin andthe next hearing is on September 15.

Rahul has been granted bailagainst a surety of Rs 15,000. He andhis co-accused, CPM generalsecretary Sitaram Yechury, haveboth been exempted from personalattendance during the hearings.

The next case against Rahul willbe heard in Patna on July 6.

If the surfeit of cases is aconcerted attempt to frighten him offattacking the Sangh’s ideology,Rahul seems intent on battling it outinstead of choosing the easier routeof apologising.

“This is an ideological battle. They

are attacking me and I’m enjoying it.I’m standing with the poor, with thefarmers,” he told reporters.

Thousands of Congress workershad turned up to receive Rahul inMumbai, unfazed by his resignationas party president.

In Delhi, the party launched ascathing attack on the Sangh parivarand ensured that the social mediacampaign #RSSVsIndia trended forhours. The Congress highlighted theSangh’s failure to participate in thefreedom struggle, accused it ofsupporting the British and cited howit had been banned three times afterIndependence. It painted the Sanghideology as contradicting the idea ofIndia.

The mood in the party is clear:Rahul remains the supreme leader

whether or not he holds the top post.Ahmed Patel, who still wieldssignificant control over the levers ofpower in the organisation, indicatedhis mind with two tweets.

“Rahul ji’s resignation letter isunfortunate. We all are accountablefor this defeat,” he posted.

“He has, in a short span, alreadymade tremendous contribution instrengthening the party and we allbelieve his endeavour shouldcontinue. He is and will remain myleader, our leader & will continue toprovide solid strength for theCongress.”

Sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tootried to obliquely confront theperception that Rahul was beingirresponsible and foolishlysentimental. She tagged Rahul’sstatement with this tweet: “Few havethe courage that you do RahulGandhi. Deepest respect for yourdecision.”

To many in the Congress, Rahul’sdecision to quit as party chief at adifficult time looks like escapism. But many others hope that hisdrastic step would help bring aboutmeaningful structural changesinstead of the usual dressing up seenafter every defeat.

By stressing accountability anddeclaring “at times, I stoodcompletely alone” in the battleagainst Prime Minister NarendraModi, Rahul has mounted hugepressure on the entrenched interestsin the party.

If the party refuses to change evennow, Rahul will be free to look foroptions that may include forming anew Congress as Indira Gandhi didfour decades ago. However, thatpossibility looks remote since theparty is not in open conflict withRahul, as it had been with hisgrandmother.

Rahul’s quitting has stirredunease within his party,

with a string of high-profile resignations

following hisannouncement. His sister

and party generalsecretary Priyanka GandhiVadra said she respected

MALAIKA SHARES POST TAGGINGARJUN KAPOOR: RIGHT LOVERWILL NEVER CAUSE ANXIETY

MALLIKA SHERAWATSAYS A PRODUCERONCE WANTED TO FRYAN EGG ON HER BELLY

Actor Mallika Sherawat has saidthat a ‘novice’ producer once triedto convince her to allow him to fry

an egg on her belly. Mallika was speakingto comedian Kapil Sharma on The KapilSharma Show.

When the host asked her about certain‘rumours’ about the film industry,Mallika shared an anecdote with theaudience about what she has experiencedin her career. “Once I was shooting a songfor a film. And the producer seemed to bea novice. So he was trying to figure out away to portray ‘Mallika is very hot.’ So,he sent an idea through thechoreographer - ‘Can I fry an egg on yourbelly in the song?’ It’s true! Theproducer’s actually asked me this,” shesaid.

When co-host Archana Puran Singhasked Mallika, “Did you go through withit?” the actor replied, “No, I didn’t.”

Mallika recently spoke about anotherincident, in which a director had said toher, “I want to do something different. Soin this dance step, aapke kamar pe nah..main garam garam roti sekunga (in thisstep, I’ll cook rotis on your waist).”

She had also told PTI that she’d lost outon roles because male stars wanted tocast their girlfriends instead. “I lost filmprojects because they thought I wasopinionated. I would hear from heroes‘don’t cast her she speaks a lot and has alot of opinions.’ They would prefer theirgirlfriends instead of me in projects. I canlist at least 20-30 movies that I’ve lost. Butit didn’t make me bitter. It was mygradual evolution. Now when I look back, they look like fools, all of them,” she said.

She toldPTI, “I was thrown out of projectsbecause heroes would say ‘why can’t yoube intimate with me? You can do it onscreen, what’s the problem in doing thatwith me in private?’ I’ve lost so manyprojects. It’s very reflective of the society, what women deal with in our country.”

Footage posted by CCTV on its officialWeibo account shows dozens of flattenedbuildings in an economic developmentzone in Kaiyuan.

China’s Global Times newspaper saidthat tornadoes were rarely seen in thearea.

The country’s weather bureau onTuesday said that climate change couldcause more extreme weather events, following floods, drought and extremehigh temperatures in some regions thisyear.

It said rainfall had broken records insome areas and that as many as 40weather stations had this year registeredtheir hottest temperatures ever.

Japan Upper House poll begins; Abe’sconstitutional reform hopes at stake

TOKYO (TIP): Campaigning began onJuly 4 for Japan’s July 21 Upper Houseelection, with Prime Minister ShinzoAbe’s ruling bloc expected to keep amajority but perhaps with fewer seats, clouding hopes of achieving his goal ofrevising the pacifist Constitution.

Abe, who took office in December 2012pledging to restart the economy andbolster defence, is pushing his LiberalDemocratic Party-led coalition as thebest bet for political stability andhighlighting his diplomatic expertiseincluding warm personal ties with USPresident Donald Trump.

Abe is also highlighting his call torevise the post-war constitution tofurther legitimise Japan’s Self-DefenseForces (SDF), as its military is known.

“We have pledged in our partyplatform to inscribe the SDF in theconstitution,” Kyodo news agencyquoted Abe as saying in his firstcampaign speech in the northeasternregion of Fukushima.

Opposition parties are focusing onwhat they call a threat to voter finances, including a potential hit on spendingfrom an October rise in the sales tax to

10% and strains in the public pensionsystem in the shrinking, fast-ageingpopulation.

Media surveys show the LDP runningwell ahead of the main oppositionConstitutional Democratic Party ofJapan and others in the fragmentedopposition camp but with some tightraces.

Upper house elections are held everythree years for half the chamber’s seatsand members’ terms run six years.Reforms last year will take to 245 thenumber of upper house seats, from 242,and 124 will be contested in this round.

Abe has said the goal is for the LDPand its smaller coalition partner, theKomeito, to keep a majority of totalseats, so the two parties only need to win53 seats to add to the 70 they have that arenot being contested.

Other party executives have said theruling bloc should aim to win a majority,or 63, of the seats up for grabs.

Winning a two-thirds majority neededfor constitutional revision will be tough,as the ruling bloc and like-minded allieswould need to take 86 of the seats up forgrabs, according to the Yomiurinewspaper.

Abe has acknowledged he is stillhaunted by a crushing LDP defeat in a2007 upper house poll that triggered hisresignation two months later, ending arocky one-year term as premier.

Abe has led his party to victory in fivenational elections since returning asLDP leader in 2012, and is on track tobecome Japan’s longest-serving premierif he remains in office until November.

But the victories have been aided by afragmented opposition and low voterturnout, a pattern that could berepeated. Reuters

Asense of humour is an attractive trait. There isabundant cross cultural evidence that shows thatbeing funny makes you more desirable as a mate,

especially if you are a man. But once the initial flirtingis over, and you are in a romantic relationship, howlarge a role does humour play?

For dating couples, use of positive humour (forexample, using humour to cheer up your date) canpositively contribute to relationship satisfaction. Theuse of aggressive humour, on the other hand (teasingand making fun of your partner) has the opposite effect. These feelings can fluctuate on a day-to-day basisdepending on each partner’s use of humour.

For long-term relationships, such as in marriages, couples generally share a similar sense of humour –although similarities in sense of humour are notassociated with greater marital satisfaction, nor withlonger marriages. Perhaps not surprisingly, theresearch that resulted in this finding also found thatcouples with fewer children laugh more, compared tocouples with a larger number of children.

In another study, conducted with 3,000 marriedcouples from five countries, both husbands and wiveswere found to be happier with a humorous partner, butthis trait was reported to be more important for themarital satisfaction of the wives than the husbands.Interestingly, both husbands and wives thought that the

husband was humourous more often. Regardless, married couples overwhelmingly say that humour has apositive impact on their marriages.

Conflict resolutionBut what happens when things aren’t going so well?

Humour is a great ice breaker and a social lubricant, but can it also help resolve conflict in marriages? In onestudy, researchers observed 60 newlywed couples whenthey discussed a problem in their marriage. They codedhow much humour was used in the conversation. Thecouples also completed a measure of life stress. Whatresearchers found when they followed up 18 monthslater was quite surprising. In couples that reportedhigh stress, the more the husband used humour, thegreater the chance the couple would separate ordivorce.

By contrast, in a similar study with 130 marriedcouples, a wife’s use of humour predicted greatermarital stability over six years, but only if the humourled to a decrease in their husband’s heart rate. In otherwords, if the humour calms the husbands, then it mightbe beneficial to their marriages.

These two studies show the disparate function ofhumour for men and women. For men, humour mightserve as a way to distract from dealing with problems inthe relationship, perhaps in an attempt to reduce theirown anxiety. Women, on the other hand, may usehumour to create a more relaxed atmosphere that canfacilitate reconciliation.

Not washing your toolsSanitizing your tools should be

the first step and your number onepriority. According to research, thearea around and under ourfingernails stores the largestamount of harmful bacteria, and ifthese tools are not being washedwith disinfectant you are allowingthe spread of germs and riskingcontamination. In addition, storingtools in a sealed bag, allows bacteriato fester.

So the best way to store your toolsis in a breathable container and usedisinfectant or alcohol to cleanthem before and after each use.

Cutting your cuticlesWe’ve all been guilty of doing this

because we’ve seen it occasionallydone to us by professionals, but, cutting your cuticles is a majorhealth risk, due to the fact that youleave unprotected cuts on yourfingers which could potentially getinfected. In addition to that, whenthe cuticles start growing again, they come back flaky and messylooking which completely ruinsyour look.

If you love the look of nippedcuticles, then the best thing for youto do is to use a rosewood stick andpush them back. This way you willprotect your fingernails fromgetting an infection while stillachieving the aesthetic look thatyou desire.

Not using a base coatA lot of people believe that a

basecoat is unnecessary and a wasteof time so they skip this step whenthey are getting their manicure. However, basecoats were originallycreated to bind with your naturalnails and make your manicure lastup to one week longer. This happensbecause our nails produce naturaloils that prevent the nail polish

from binding well with the nail, so abase coat keeps the oils out andkeeps the manicure or gel polishfrom chipping.

Applying thick coats of polish

We all like a very pigmented lookon our nails that takes less time tocomplete and looks solid, and thatautomatically makes us applythicker coats of nail polish. Eventhough this may seem the best wayto go, it is actually a major mistakewhen you are doing your manicure.

Thick coats of nail polish taketwice as long to dry and underneathtake approximately 5-6 minuteswhich is a recipe for a smudgingdisaster. Nail polish, in general, isnot designed to dry well when it’sthick in order to be protected whenit’s housed in the bottle.

So the best thing to do is apply 3-4thin layers of nail polish instead of1-2 thick ones.

Using Q-tipsQ-tips are proven life-savers

especially when it comes to makeup,so we slowly started incorporatingthem into our manicure routine aswell. When nail polish gets on theskin around the nail, we just get acotton pad and start wiping, but ittakes the slightest motion to bringchaos to the whole look and have tostart over from the beginning. Thecotton fuzzies, no matter how manymillimeters they are away from thewet nail polish have a tendency tostick to the manicure and ruin thewhole look, forcing you to start fromthe beginning.

Instead of using Q-tips, use a verythin makeup brush to clean thearea.

HUMOUR CAN CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Regular exercise is not justgood for your health but itcan also make you smarter, a

study has found.Neuroscientists, working with

mice, have discovered that a shortburst of exercise directly boosts thefunction of a gene that increasesconnections between neurons inthe hippocampus, the region of thebrain associated with learning andmemory.

They measured the brain’sresponse to single bouts of exercisein otherwise sedentary mice thatwere placed for short periods on

running wheels. The mice ran a fewkilometers in two hours.

The study, published in thejournal eLife, found that short-termbursts of exercise—the humanequivalent of a weekly game ofpickup basketball, or 4,000 steps—promoted an increase in synapsesin the hippocampus.

The neurocientists at OregonHealth & Science University in theUS made the key discovery byanalysing genes that wereincreased in single neuronsactivated during exercise.

During the research, one

particular gene—Mtss1L—stoodout. This gene had been largelyignored in prior studies in thebrain. The Mtss1L gene encodes aprotein that causes bending of thecell membrane.

The researchers discovered thatwhen this gene is activated by shortbursts of exercise, it promotessmall growths on neurons known asdendritic spines—the site at whichsynapses form.

The study showed that an acuteburst of exercise is enough toprime the brain for learning.

HIV INFECTION UPS RISK OFHEART FAILURE, STROKE

People living with HIV are at an increased risk ofdeveloping cardiovascular diseases (CVD),particularly heart failure and stroke, warn

researchers."Our findings reinforce the importance of primary

prevention of cardiovascular disease through controlof risk factors such as high blood pressure or smokingin persons living with HIV," said study lead authorAlvaro Alonso from Emory University in the US.

Published in the Journal of the American HeartAssociation, the study analysed information from alarge health insurance database.

For the study, researchers analysed information on19,798 people living with HIV and 59,302 age- and sex-matched non-infected individuals who were followedfor an average of 20 months.

According to the researchers, people living with HIVhad 3.2 times and 2.7 times higher risks of heartfailure and stroke, respectively, when compared tonon-infected persons.

Marijuana can be effective intreating pain, insomnia: Study

Cannabis can treat both pain and insomnia inpeople who want to avoid prescription and sleepmedications, a study has found.

The study, published in the Journal of PsychoactiveDrugs, looked at 1,000 people taking legalisedmarijuana in an American state.

Researchers in the US found that among the 65 percent of people taking cannabis for pain, 80 per centfound it was very or extremely helpful.

Eighty-two per cent of these people were able toreduce, or stop taking over the counter painmedications and 88 per cent were able to stop takingopioid painkillers. The study suggested that cannabiscould lower opioid use. However, the researchers notedthat more needs to be done to understand the potentialtherapeutic benefits of cannabis.

Traditional over the counter medications andpainkillers can help, however they may have seriousside effects. Opioids depress the respiratory system, meaning that overdoses may be fatal.

“People develop tolerance to opioids, which meansthat they require higher doses to achieve the sameeffect. This means that chronic pain patients oftenincrease their dose of opioid medications over time, which in turn increases their risk of overdose," saidJulia Arnsten, professor at Albert Einstein College ofMedicine.

Migraine increases risk of complications during pregnancy

Pregnant women with migrainehave an increased risk ofmiscarriage, caesarean

sections and giving birth to a childwith low birth weight, a study hasfound.

Researchers at Aarhus Universityin Denmark worked with 22,000pregnant women with migraine. They were compared with anapproximately 10 times largergroup of pregnant women withoutknown migraine.

The study, published in thejournal Headache, suggests that therisk of caesarean sections isbetween 15-25 per cent higher forpregnant women with migrainecompared with pregnant womenwithout migraine. Around 20 percent of all births in Denmark are bycaesarean section.

The researchers have also usedthe same data to deduce thatmigraine medication possiblyprevents some of the complications.

"The study was not specificallydesigned to examine this aspect. However, we show that the risk ofcomplications generally was lowerfor pregnant women with migrainewho took medication whencompared with the pregnant women

with migraines who were nottreated," said Nils Skajaa of AarhusUniversity.

"This also indicates that themigraine medication isn't the causeof the complications, but rather themigraine itself. This is importantknowledge for pregnant womenwith migraines," Skajaa added.

Migraines are relatively commonand affect twice as many women asmen.

The actual cause remainsunknown, but previous researchsuggests that migraines may betriggered by stress, fatigue, orhormonal changes such aspregnancy. Source: PTI

NASA tests launch-abort systemfor moon-mission capsule

NASA carried out a successful test on Tuesday ofa launch-abort system for the Orion capsuledesigned to take US astronauts to the Moon.

The three-minute exercise at Cape Canaveral inFlorida aimed to test in almost real-life conditions theevacuation of astronauts from the capsule in the eventof an explosion or rocket booster failure.

The test “put us one huge step closer to the firstArtemis flight carrying people to the Moon,” saidOrion program manager Mark Kirasich.

The technique used is the US equivalent of anemergency system used last October to bring aRussian cosmonaut and a US astronaut safely back toearth when a problem emerged with their Soyuzrocket shortly after liftoff from Kazakhstan.

In the test, which was carried live on NASA TV, anunmanned Orion capsule was launched by a mini-rocket—a repurposed first stage of anintercontinental ballistic missile.

Fifty-five seconds after the launch, at an altitude of31,000 feet (9,500 meters), a rocket-powered tower ontop of the crew module ignited its engines to quicklypull the Orion away from a hypothetical rocketexperiencing problems.

In just 15 seconds, the capsule gained two miles ofaltitude.

Then the tower reoriented the capsule to prepare itfor descent and disengagement from the tower.

In real-life conditions, parachutes would open toease the manned capsule’s fall toward the AtlanticOcean. In this exercise, however, parachutes were notused because they are very expensive and have alreadybeen tested multiple times.

APPLE WORKING ON A NEWFACETIME FEATURE THAT

LETS YOU FAKE EYE CONTACTAs part of the third beta of iOS

13, Apple is testing a featurecalled “FaceTime Attention

Correction” to make users fake aneye-to-eye contact on Apple’s video-calling app, even when they arelooking elsewhere.

Normally, video calls tend tomake it look like both participantsare peering off to one side or theother, since they are looking at theperson on their display rather thandirectly into the front-facingcamera which is exactly what thisfeature intends to fix, The Vergereported on Tuesday.

“Haven’t tested this yet, but ifApple uses some dark magic tomove my gaze to seem like I’mstaring at the camera and not at thescreen I will be flabbergasted. (Newin beta 3!),” app designer MikeRundle who spotted the test tweeted.

The feature appears to use somekind of image manipulation tocorrect this and results in realistic-looking fake eye contact betweenthe FaceTime users.

“Looking at him (Rundle’s friend)on-screen (not at the camera)produces a picture of me looking

dead at his eyes like I was staring atthe camera. This is insane,” headded.

Shockingly, the feature’s debut oniOS was predicted by Rundlehimself back in 2017.

For now, the feature only appearsto be working on the iPhone XS andXS Max with this version of thebeta and can be toggled on and offfrom within FaceTime’s settings.

The “FaceTime Attention

Correction” feature should arrive inthe public-facing beta next week, the report added.

Apple unveiled the iOS 13 withseveral features like Dark Mode andApple sign-in. The next generationof Apple’s operating system (OS)would make unlocking the Appledevice with Face ID 30 per centfaster, downloads 50 per centsmaller and updates 60 per centsmaller.

The world’s largest smartphone maker is now in the finalstages of producing a commercial version but can’t yet pin downa date to begin sales, people familiar with the matter said, askingnot to be identified describing an internal effort. Samsung pulledthe device after several publications including Bloomberg Newsreported problems with test versions, such as screenmalfunctions that emerged after a film on the display was peeledoff. Korea’s biggest company is trying to move past yet anotherproduct faux pas. It has now stretched the protective film to wraparound the entire screen and flow into the outer bezels so it wouldbe impossible to peel off by hand, said the people, who have seenthe latest versions. It re-engineered the hinge, pushing it slightlyupward from the screen (it’s now flush with the display) to helpstretch the film further when the phone opens.

That tension makes the film feel harder and more a naturalpart of the device rather than a detachable accessory, they added.

The Amarnath yatra attracts lakhsof pilgrims every year who visitthe site during Shravani Mela in

July-August (Shravan month in Hinducalendar) - the only time in the wholeyear when the Amarnath Cave isaccessible. The cave is placed at analtitude of 3,888m, about 141 km fromSrinagar, the capital of Jammu andKashmir and reached through Pahalgamtown. The shrine has an important partto play in Hinduism and is considered tobe one of the holiest shrines. The annual'Amarnath Yatra' is marked by 'PrathamPujan' which is said to invoke theblessings of Baba Amarnath. It is saidthat the 'lingum' in the holy cave growsand shrinks with the lunar cycle. Moreover, since the ice is collected fromthe water dripping from the top of thecave due to the melting of the ice on topof it, the 'lingum' reaches a maximumaround July-August when the ice capsaround the cave are melting. Water seepsinto the rocks that form the cave andprogressively fades thereafter. As per thereligious beliefs, it has been claimed thatthe lingam grows and shrinks with thephases of the moon reaching its heightduring the summer festival.

Legend of AmarnathThe legend says that Lord Shiva had to

give in to Goddess Parvati's demands ofknowing the secrets of life and death buthe couldn't risk anyone eavesdropping. So, they set on their way to a cave in themountains - too difficult to be reached byany lesser person than the godsthemselves. The secret was so sacred thatall the companions also had to be leftbehind. So his ride - Nandi, the bull - wasleft at Pahalgam, the moon atop his headat Chandanwari, the snake around hisneck at Lake Sheshnag, the 5 basicelements of life that he carried atPanchtarini and even his son - LordGanesha himself - at Mahaguna top. And, now Hindu devotees findthemselves en route this perilousmountainous trek every year.

The Amarnath Yatra 2019 started from1st July 2019 and will end on 15th August. The Amarnath Board has decided that7,500 pilgrims will be allowed to registerfor the Amarnath Yatra in 2019.

If you go by the Hindu mythology thenthere is a subtle connection between theHimalayan apex and Lord Shiva. thefamous Sanskrit poet Kalidasa hasdepicted Himalaya as the laughter ofLord Shiva. On the other hand LordKrishna in Bhagavad Gita has revealedthat he is the Himalayas. And not toforget that Swami Vivekananda has alsosaid the India has such large number ofGods and Goddesses and its because itsclose proximity to the Himalayas whichis an abode of God.

The sacred cave of Amarnath can bevisited during the monsoon months ofJuly and August during which an ice-mound is formed inside the cave and ina very mysterious and rhythmic waywater trickles on the ice-mound from thetop of the cave. the ice-mound is soformed that it takes the shape of theShiva lingam which gradually rises totake a full form shape on a full moonnight. It is believed that water from thefamous Ramkund Lake trickles on theicy-mound of the lingam.

It is a proven fact for years thatAmarnath yatra leaves a spiritualimpact on the mind of the pilgrims asthey stride through the bewildering pathto the sacred Lord Shiva on the apex themountains and to meet the greatness ofGod. Swami Vivekananda has narratedthe fact that his experience to Amarnathis inspiring.

Discovery of Holy Cave The story narrated by people about the

discovery of this Holy Cave is of aGujjar ( shepherd) Buta Malik . He isgiven the credit of discovering this HolyCave . Story goes like this , that a saintgave Buta Malik a bag full of Coal. Onreaching his home when he opened thebag , to his utter surprise the bag wasfull of gold coins . This made himoverwelmed with joy. He ran to thank theSaint . But, what he found was that theSaint had disappeared . Instead , hefound The Holy Cave and Shiv Lingamthere in . He announced the discovery ofthis to the Villagers. Then onwards thishas become the sacred place ofPilgrimage .

The ancient epics narrate an otherstory which goes like this. The valley ofKashmir was under water .It was a biglake. Kashyap Rishi drained the waterthrough number of rivers and rivulets .In those days Bhrigu Rishi came thatway on a visit to The Himalyas. He wasthe first to have Darshans of this HolyCave . When people heard of the Lingam,Amarnath for them became Shiva’sabode and a Centre of pilgrimage . Sincethen Lacs of devotees perform thepilgrimage through tough terrain andavail eternal happiness.

The trek to Amarnath, in the month ofsharavan has the devout flock to thisincredible shrine, where the image ofShiva, in the form of a Lingam, is formednaturally of an Ice Stalagmite, whichwaxes and wanes with the Moon's cycle .By its side are fascinating, two more IceLingams, that of Maa Parvati and oftheir son, Ganesha .

America CelebratesIndependence Day with a BangIn America's earliest decades, the Fourth of July

saw plenty of military pageantry in Washington. TheSmithsonian's research found Presidents Jefferson,Madison, Van Buren and Polk presided over militaryparades on Independence Day. But the tradition diedunder Zachary Taylor in 1850.

Trump has voiced his desire to show off with theAmerican military ever since he attended a BastilleDay celebration with troops and tanks as a guest ofFrench President Emmanuel Macron in 2017.And ithappened.

Under White House direction, the army movedtanks and other armoured vehicles into the nation'scapital on Wednesday night. The Pentagon arrangedfor an Air Force B-2 stealth bomber and otherwarplanes to conduct flyovers of the celebration onthe National Mall. There were Navy F-35 and F-18fighter jets, the Navy-Blue Angels aerial acrobaticsteam, Army and Coast Guard helicopters and MarineV-22 Ospreys.

"Military Leaders are thrilled to be doing this &showing to the American people, among other things, the strongest and most advanced Military anywherein the World," Trump tweeted. "Incredible Flyovers &biggest ever Fireworks!"

Two Bradley fighting vehicles were in place nearthe Lincoln Memorial, where Trump delivered apatrioticspeech during an event that he has billed ashonouring the U.S. armed forces.Thousands of peoplegathered albeit under low cloud cover following heavyrains earlier Thursday.Air Force One flew over theMall as Trump approached the podium protected byrain-streaked bulletproof glass. It was the first time indecades that a President has addressed a crowd.

"Today, we come together as one nation with thisvery special salute to America. We celebrate ourhistory, our people, and the heroes who proudlydefend our flag - the brave men and women of theUnited States military," Trump said. "As long as we

stay true to our cause; as long as we remember ourgreat history; and as long as we never stop fighting fora better future; then there will be nothing thatAmerica cannot do."

The President highlighted the accomplishments ofeach branch of the military and added that "verysoon" the U.S. will have a sixth branch - the "SpaceForce."

Aircraft representing each branch, such as a B-2stealth bomber for the Air Force and F-35 Lightningsfor the Navy, flew over the National Mall in time withTrump's speech.

Attendees also enjoyed live music from the OldGuard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Band("Pershing's Own"), the Armed Forces Chorus and theUnited States Marine Corps Silent Drill Team.

Along with viewing the dynamic fireworks show onthe National Mall and attending the free CapitolFourth concert, visitors celebrated America'sbirthday in dozens of other venues in the capital.

Chief Economic Advisor K. Subramanian said thatit was a departure from "slavery of westerntradition". The red cloth symbolizes the 'bahi khaata'traditionally used in every Indian business set up tomaintain accounts.

Sitharaman was seen carrying the red clothwrapped budget papers that was neatly bound withthe auspicious yellow and red ribbon. The LionCapital shone brightly on top of the bahi khaata, asthe first-time Finance Minister walked out of theNorth Block.

Trump Pursues with CensusCitizenship Question

Facing a deadline to get the census forms printed, administration officials including Ross said onTuesday they were going ahead without including thequestion.

Critics have called the citizenship question aRepublican ploy to scare immigrants into not takingpart in the census and engineer a populationundercount in Democratic-leaning areas with highimmigrant and Latino populations. That wouldbenefit non-Hispanic whites and help Trump's fellowRepublicans gain seats in the US House ofRepresentatives and state legislatures when newelectoral district boundaries are drawn after thecensus, the critics said.

"The News Reports about the Department ofCommerce dropping its quest to put the CitizenshipQuestion on the Census is incorrect or, to state itdifferently, FAKE! We are absolutely moving forward,as we must, because of the importance of the answerto this question," Trump wrote on Twitter.

The Justice Department on Tuesday had told Hazelthat the administration had made a final decision notto proceed with the citizenship question, according totwo lawyers involved in the litigation. The judge thenheld a call with lawyers in the case after Trump'sWednesday announcement.

"We think there may be a legally available pathunder the Supreme Court's decision. We're examiningthat, looking at near-term options to see whetherthat's viable and possible," Hunt said.

Hazel said he wants a final response by Fridayafternoon on whether the government will pressahead with adding the citizenship question.Otherwise, legal claims accusing administrationofficials of being motivated by racial bias in addingthe citizenship question will move forward.
