story problems {addition & subtraction to 10}
Created by Miss Kindergarten www.miss-kindergarten.com
How to use Addition to 10:
When teaching my students how to solve story problems, I show them how to circle the numbers in the problem and underline the important words. Then I have them cut out the manipulatives {or use real manipulatives if you can!} and “act out” the problem on
their page. Once they glue down the manipulatives, they write the equation to match and record their answer. These would be
perfect to glue into math journals!

Missing Addends pages: I have my students glue down the total amount, then put a box around the “known addend”. The pictures left are the missing addend and can be written on one of the blank lines of the
equation.
How to use Subtraction from 10:
When working on subtraction story problems, we do the same steps as addition, but cross out the manipulatives after gluing them
down.

Finally, I included some “make your own” addition and subtraction pages for the students to use what they know about story problems to create their own. They draw manipulatives to match their story problem and solve the equation. This would also
be a fun addition to your math centers. You could have one student make a story problem and another person solve it. Stick each page in a sheet protector or write and wipe pocket and
have your students use dry erase markers.
