General Pageant InformationThe Mr. & Miss Apollo Birmingham Pageant will take place on Saturday, September , at Al’s on Seventh, located at 2627 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama, 35205. Telephone: (205) 321-2812. The pageant will begin promptly at 8:00 PM; however, all contestants must be in the designated dressing room at 7:00 PM SHARP. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of 50 Administrative Points from their final OVERALL score.

Contestant Registration & Interview CompetitionContestants may begin registering for competition on August 1, . The registration fee for competition is $100.00. Contestants that submit their registration fee prior to midnight on September 8, 201 will be a discounted registration fee of $75.00.

The registration should be paid to the committee chair and contestants that pre-pay will be provided with a receipt of payment.

All contestants should report for pre-pageant check-in at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September , at Al’s on Seventh, located at 2627 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205. You must be prompt. All contestants arriving after 2:00 PM will be receive a deduction of 10 Administrative Points from their final OVERALL score.

During Check-In contestants will be asked to provide their completed BIO (see back of this packet), any unpaid entry fee, proof of age and residency. In addition, presentation music and talent music will be accepted at this time. The music for each category should be on a separate CD with your stage name clearly labeled on the outside of the CD. If you have music for presentation and music for talent, then should have TWO CDs. Thumb drives and memory sticks will not be accepted. Contestants are responsible for retrieving their CDs from the house DJ at the end of the competition. Any CDs (or other items that are left behind will be discarded.) Contestants may also bring in any props, costumes, etc., that will be used during the competition. After check-in, contestants will draw for numbers for order of competition. After numbers have been drawn, contestants may swap numbers with another contestant if they so desire.

Interview competition will begin immediately following check-in .Following the interview, contestants will be given a chance to listen to their music and “walk the stage”.

2:00 PM

Contestant Registration: Contestants should present their Contestant Application and Entry fee (if not pre-registered) along with the Proof of Age, Residency, Contestant Information Form and music for Presentation and Talent (if any).

Contestants arriving after 2:01 will received a deduction of 10 Administrative Points from their final overall score.

2:45 PM

Contestant Interview: This is a judged category. Contestants will participate in a 5-minute interview with a panel of judges where they will be asked questions about themselves, their interests, and hobbies, their entertainment career, as well as what you may know about the Mystic Krewe of Apollo – Birmingham. Treat this as a job interview.

3:30 PM

Sound Check: As contestants complete their interview you will be directed to the Show Room where you can listen to your music and walk the stage and become familiar with the show room. This is not rehearsal time.

7:00 PM

Contestant in Designated Dressing Area: All contestants must “check-in” to the designated dressing area by 7:00 PM. Monitors will be clearly identifiable. Please introduce yourself and verify that they have seen you. Once you have checked in with the monitors, you are free to leave the dressing area.

8:00 PM

Curtain Call: The pageant begins.

Any contestant who is not prepared to take center stage when their name or number is called for ANY CATEGORY will receive a score of ZERO (0) for that category.

Rules, Regulations and RequirementsThe following Rules, Regulations, and Requirements apply to all contestants vying for the title of Mr. or Miss Apollo – Birmingham .

All contestants must be at least 21 years of age on or before September , 201 . Proof of legal age may be in the form of any State or Federal Government issued document (Driver’s License, Certified Birth Certificate, Passport, etc.) This should be presented at the time of pre-registration or at the time of Contestant Check-in and Registration at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September , 201 . If it becomes necessary for the pageant committee to investigate the age of a contestant reasonable measure will be taken for that investigation and the contestant will be informed if just validation i s found for disqualification from the pageant under this rule

All contestants must be residents of the state of Alabama or any adjoining state (Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, or Tennessee) . A valid Alabama driver’s license or other proof of residency (i.e. copy of lease agreement, copy of recent utility bill, etc.) is requ ired at pre-registration or at the time of Contestant Check-In and registration at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September ,201

No previous winner of the title of Mr. or Miss Apollo Birmingham or Mr. or Miss National Apollo is eligible to participate in competition for the same title that they have previously held.

All contestants must be male. Contestants for the title of Miss Apollo – Birmingham must have complete male genitalia

All contestants, their assistants, or members of their production team caught in the act of violating any of the laws of the State of Alabama will be immediately disqualified and removed from the premises. You, as the contestant are responsible for seeing that the members of your team follow these rules.

Any contestant whose actions, at any time, are interpreted to be demeaning to the title of Mr. or Miss Apollo – Birmingham will be disqualified and removed from the premises.

Promptness is Required. All contestants must be prepared to take the stage in each competition category, whenever their name or number is called. Failure to do so will result in a score of ZERO (0) for that competition category.

All contestants must be present and accounted for (with all pageant materials) at least ONE HOUR prior to the scheduled pageant start time (See Pageant Day Schedule). Late arrivals will receive a deduction of FIFTY (50) Administrative Points from their overall cumulative score for failure to meet the requirements of this rule.

The completed Contestant Application, Contestant Information Form, entry fees, proof of age and proof of residency must be submitted to the Mr. & Miss Apollo Pageant Committee Chairman (or his designees) no later than 2:00 PM on Saturday, September , . Failure to register by 2:00 PM on Saturday, September , will result in the deduction of TEN (10) Administrative points from the contestants overall cumulative score.

The entry fee is $100.00 per contestant. Contestants may receive a discount of 25%, (a registration fee of $75.00), when registration is made between August 1, and midnight, Saturday, September , . Please contact the Mr. & Miss Apollo Birmingham Committee Chairman to make arrangements for pre-registration. Pre-registration fees may be made in the form of cash, money order or via PayPal . Registration fees, paid after midnight, September 8, must be in the form of cash. Registration fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

Rules, Regulations and RequirementsMusic for Presentation and Talent categories must be presented to the committee at the Contestant Check-In and Registration.

Contestant Check-in and registration is at 2:00 PM on at Al’s on Seventh, located at 2627 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.

All music should be on high-quality CD or DVD (thumb drives will not be accepted) and the music for each category should be on a separate CD. CDs should be clearly labeled with the contestants name, address and telephone number. There should be one track per CD. The contestant number will be added to the CD after contestant numbers are assigned.

Contestants may retrieve their CDs from the house DJ at the conclusion of the pageant. Any CDs left, at the conclusion of the pageant may be disposed of.

Contestants will receive ONE (and only ONE) free admission pass and backstage assistant pass to the pageant. This free admission may be used at the contestant’s discretion. The backstage assistant pass is separate from backstage passes which may be distributed for back up performers in presentation or talent.

Contestants are allowed one assistant backstage at all times to assist with dressing, preparation, etc. The backstage assistant must display the assistants pass at all times. This pass may be “handed off” to another person but only ONE person will be allowed in the contestant area as a backstage assistant at any given time. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the deduction of TEN (10) administrative points deducted from the total cumulative score, for each infraction of this rule.

Backup performers, for presentation and talent categories are allowed backstage twenty (20) minutes prior to the beginning of the competition category. The contestant should request the appropriate number of backup performer passes for presentation and talent. The backstage passes for each category are different. Performers participating in both presentation and talent will require two passes. Backup performers for presentation may be backstage beginning at 7:30 PM, prior to the pageant start at 8:00 PM. Backup performers for talent may move to the backstage area after you have left the stage following Evening Gown/Formal Wear – On Stage Question and Answer.

All props and accessories used during the pageant must be removed from the pageant venue at the conclusion of the pageant. Any items that are left behind will be disposed of

Formal attire (tuxedos and evening gowns) are requested for the crowning ceremony. The winner of each title will be provided with an opportunity to perform a “crowning number / performance” at the completion of the crowning ceremony. Any music required for the crowning number performance should be turned in with the music submitted for Presentation and Talent and should follow t he same guidelines.

Performance of this crowning number is completely optional and is not required.

Judging A selection of qualified and experienced judges will be empaneled for this competition. Judges will award points based on the criteria as outlined in the Competition Categories section. Each judge will be independent of the other judges.

The Interview competition will take place immediately following Contestant Check-In and registration on Saturday, September , 201 at Al’s on Seventh. The interview panel will consist of five (5) interviewers. e high and low score will be dropped to determine the overall interview score for each contestant. The contestant (for both Mr. and Miss Apollo) with the highest calculated interview score will be awarded the Betty Eveready Award for Best Interview, during the presentation of awards at the conclusion of the pageant.

There will be a total of five (5) judges for the evening competition (Presentation, Evening Gown/Formal Wear, On-stage Q&A, and Talent). The high and low score for each contestant will be dropped in each category resulting in the tabulation of a total of three scores. These three scores will be added together for a total competition category score. The totals for each competition category will then be added together to derive the total CUMULATIVE score. Any administrative point deductions will be subtracted from this final CUMULATIVE score. (Judges are not made aware of any administrative point deductions.)

All judges will be instructed to provide critique for any point deduction that they may assess.

Final score sheets will be mailed to the address provided on the Contestant Information Form that was provided at registration. You should receive your scores sheets by the end of the week following the pageant.

Competition Categories (Descriptions and Scoring)Following is a description for each competition category, including scoring, category specific rules and expectations. The categories are:

InterviewContestants should approach this category as if they were in a job interview and should be prepared to answer questions, from the judges, on topics about themselves personally, their career (on and offstage), dreams and ambitions as well as questions regarding their knowledge of The Mystic Krewe of Apollo – Birmingham. Contestants competing for Miss Apollo may interview as a male or female. The interview time for each contestant will be approximately five (5) minutes to seven (7) minutes. Miss Contestants will interview before Mr. Contestants.

Appearance 25 Points Poise and Confidence 25 Points Content of Answers 25 Points Personality 25 Points

Total Points 100 Points The contestant with the highest overall score (of both Mr. and Miss Contestants) will be awarded the Betty Eveready Award for Best Interview.

PresentationThe theme for the Presentation Category is “ .” We are a Mardi Gras costume Krewe and would like to see your interpretation of the presentation theme. This category provides contestants with an opportunity to display their creativity and originality.

Contestants will be required to speak on the microphone and are requested to introduce themselves to the judges and the audience. Confidence is important. Take this opportunity to recognize any of your supporters or sponsors as you feel is appropriate.

This is NOT talent! This is your first introduction to the judges and audience. Make it count! This is a timed category and you have three (3) minutes to present your costume and introduce yourself, (including set up and take down time.)

Evening Gown / Formal WearMiss Apollo contestants should wear a full length gown that touches the top of the shoe in at least one place. You will be judged on hair, makeup, accessories, fit of the garment as well as poise, confidence and modeling ability.

Mr. Apollo contestants are encouraged to wear a traditional formal tuxedo. You will be judged on grooming, accessories, fit of the garment as well as poise, confidence and modeling ability.

The contestant in the Evening Gown competition with the highest overall score will be awarded the Leah Shannon Award for Best Evening Gown.

The contestant in the Formal Wear competition with the highest overall score will be awarded the Thacker / Longobardi Award for Best Formal Wear.

Onstage Question & AnswerThe Onstage Question and Answer category will take place once the contestant has completed modeling in their portion of the Evening Gown / Formal Wear category. Contestants will be asked to choose from a selection of questions that have been prepared by the pageant committee.

TalentThe talent category is a timed category. Contestants are given seven (7) minutes, including set-up and break-down for any props that may be used during the talent presentation. Exceeding the time limit will result in a score of ZERO (0) for this category.

No pyrotechnics (fire, flash pots, flaming batons, sparklers, etc.) are allowed.

Any type of talent presentation is acceptable except those that might cause injury to the audience. If you have questions about the talent you wish to perform, please feel free to contact any committee member with questions.

will be made with your appearance at the annual Bal Masque, to be held on February ,.

The payment will be made when you return to crown your successor at next year’s p ageant.

One table, seating 10 guests. (Guests will be required to purchase admission in the form of grand patrons or program advertisements). The contestant will be responsible for decorating the table as well as providing any favors for your guests.

You will be expected to execute a ball costume in accordance with the theme; . The Captain of Bal Masque XL II, , will be your liaison for this endeavor

The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to any Apollo Event for themselves and a guest .This includes the Captain’s Party, Royalty Announcement Party, and the Bal Masque itself.

Entry Fee for the Mr. and Miss National Apollo Pageant to be held in B a onNovember Contestants are required to provide their own hotel arrangements and

travel arrangements and pay all other expenses associated with competing for th e National title. We willbe happy to assist with arranging benefits and sponsorships to help alleviate some of the expenses. (Should you choose to forgo competing in the National Pageant, you forfeit the entry fee and it may be offered, at the Krewe’s discretion, to another contestant.)
