Internet Billionaire Plans a Museum of His Own* * *
“Not Only One Picasso Out There”By Con O’Rado
Ron Amok gathered billions of dollars with his Internet sites Fiendster.com and kreweTube. Now he plans to gather hundreds of the world’s most famous works of art in a private muse-um of his own. These plans are rais-ing the hackles of the elite of the art world, who are outraged that Mr. Amok intends to snap up famous works by artists including Rubens, Bosch, Hogarth, and Canaletto and install them in his Amok Museum of Art, open only to Mr. Amok and his in-vited guests.
Thomas Bruchwind, presi-dent of the International Society of Fine Art Professionals, ex-pressed an opinion typical of his colleagues: “It’s unspeakable. He intends to shut away the great-est works of all times. It’s sim-ply criminal.” The venerable art

world magazine Prétentieux went as far as to call Mr. Amok “an art thief of the first order.”Mr. Amok is aware of his crit-ics and dismisses them. “I really don’t know why they’re getting so upset. It’s not as if there’s only one Picasso out there.”Earlier this year, crews outside of Denver finished construction on the massive build-ing that will house Mr. Amok’s museum, but only a handful of people have been allowed in-side it since then. Those few granted access come from the group of young entrepreneurs, rock stars and su-permodels that make up the play-boy billionaire’s inner circle.Mr. Amok has already made several high-profile acquisitions, among them Hieronymus Bosch’s famous triptych “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” purchased from the Prado for the record price ofPlease turn to page A10

I N T R O D U C T I O NThis set of puzzles was originally presented at the 2008 National Puzzlers’ League convention in Denver. Teams of solvers were competing for the job of curator of the Amok Museum of Art by solving puzzles to identify the artists whose works the museum’s founder wanted to add to his collection. There was one particular work of art the founder was eager to obtain, and the final two puzzles would identify this work’s artist and title respectively.
To solve at home:•Eachpuzzle(withtheexceptionof“FortheTitle”)leadstothename—usuallythelastname—ofawell-knownartist.
Although these puzzles were presented in a predetermined order at the convention, for the most part, you can solve thesepuzzlesinanyorder.Thereareafewexceptions,notedbelow.
•ThepuzzleshavebeendividedintothreeseparatePDFdocuments.Thebulkofthepuzzlesarefoundinthefirstpart(sufferpart1.pdf).Youshouldnotview“Patrons”(sufferpart2.pdf)untilyou’vesolvedasmanyofthepuzzlesinthefirst part as you’d like to. Similarly, you should not view“FortheTitle”(sufferpart3.pdf)untilyou’vesolved“Patrons.”Thesetwopuzzleswillleadyoutothe name of the artist of the most desired work and thetitleoftheworkrespectively.“FortheTitle”isaccompanied by a number of pages of works of art by the artists whose names are answers to the rest of the puzzles, so looking at these prematurely will give away the answers to the earlier puzzles.
•You should not solve the puzzle titled “GoingMobile” until you have first solved these fourpuzzles: “Making Connections,” “Paintboxes,”“Retouching,”and“Yes,ButIsItArt?”
•Thepuzzletitled“It’sAllintheDetails”involvescomparing details from paintings with the full paintings. At the convention, large versions of these paintings were posted around the room. For solving at home, you will need to findcopies of these paintings online.
•Though the puzzles are designed in color, most of them should be solvable if printed on a black-and-white printer. However, twopuzzles require color (“Paintboxes” and“Full Spectrum”), and three othersmay behardertosolvewithoutcolor(“It’sAllintheDetails,”“Patrons,”and“FortheTitle”).
