Spring is in the Air

Since our last edition, the COVID 19 restrictions have been eased and life seems to be returning to normal (whatever that is). And of course there have been the events in Ukraine.

Closer to home work has continued on the Paxton Mill development not without some unwanted impact on traffic trying to access the A1.

And the Village Hall has launched its History Wall Project capturing past photos and memories.

The next big event in the village is A Day at the Races celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee on 4 Jun. This promises to be a great event and something to look forward to as the weather improves.

Time to Get Walking Its time to get walking again! At this time of year we start to think about the mud drying up and getting out to walk in the beautiful English Countryside again, but where to find new and interesting walks? Walking in Cambridgeshire http://www.walkinginengland.co.uk/cambridge has hundreds of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, details of all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the infor-mation is there in one place. John Harris (the custodian of the website) said; ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Cambridgeshire (part of the Walking in England website – one for each county in England) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’. With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy. So home or away, check out the websites and get walking! John Harris www.walkinginengland.co.uk [email protected]

The things that go on at the library….!

Our regular Engage talks are starting again in the library. These will take place on the second Wednesday of each month, 10.30am – 12noon. Our first talk on March 9th was ‘Tales of the St Neots Riverbank’ with Liz Davies from St Neots Museum, all about the role of the river Ouse in shaping the history of St Neots. Pick up an events brochure from the library or keep an eye on https://www.library.live/whats-on to find out about our upcoming events. Our online talks are continuing twice monthly for those who are unable to come into the library.

The Spring season of The Library Presents will be running in June with an eco-fashion workshop where we show you how to create fabulous fashion from your castaway clothing! Customise your clothing with fabric spray paints, stencils, fabric pens, crayons and a treasure trove of embellishment materials. Model your creation on our be-green catwalk and get photographed for our eco fashion gallery. Look unique and individual with your newly created one off pieces! Two workshops will be running on Wednesday 1st June: 11am-1pm and 2-4pm.

We’ll also have rising folk star Daria Kulesh performing on Saturday 25 June at 7.30pm. Mixing history and folklore in captivating storytelling, performed on a selection of folk instruments, her quest to explore her North Caucasus family roots in the solo album and show Long Lost Home has enjoyed rave reviews and multiple awards. Daria will take you on an enchanting and uplifting journey. "Not a concert but an experience; emotional, compelling, and entertaining."

Check out The Library Presents website to book: Library Live | The Library Presents

As well as our usual Rhymetime and Storytime sessions we are once again offering Lego club on alternate Saturdays in the Children’s library. We provide the Lego – you bring the imagination! 50p per child – no need to book, just turn up.

We recently ran a Harry Potter trail where children could collect a trail sheet from the front desk and find all their favourite Harry Potter characters hidden around the library. Children completing the trail won a very fancy Harry Potter sticker and sweet treat from the chocolate tub!

Did you know…..

Your local library staff love to talk about books! Want some suggestions for your next audiobook? Ask us! Want to find a new favourite author? Ask us! Want to tell us about the book you just read? Please do! Want to find that book with the blue cover that’s set in Poland? Ok well that might be a bit tricky but ask us anyway! We love speaking to

customers about books and reading and especially love hearing about what you like so never be afraid to come and chat to us. We’re a friendly bunch (and we love a challenge when it comes to recommending new books!)

As I write this, Storms Eunice and Franklin have just about left us in peace. We were very lucky here at Paxton Pits, with very few trees and branches falling. Thankfully, the blossom hasn’t quite come out yet, so the start of spring didn’t get blown away in the wind!

Two spring blossoms which look very similar are blackthorn and hawthorn. These flowers are simple, with 5-6 white petals arranged around the central reproductive organs. These are fantastic for pollinators and if you take a closer look, you may see bees and other insects gathering pollen or drinking nectar. There is usually an excellent patch of blossom opposite the path which runs towards the Hayden Hide.

Spring also heralds the arrival of our summer migrant birds. A great time to spot birds and other wildlife is on our Third Thursday Walks. All are welcome and our knowledgeable guides can help you see some of the fabulous wildlife spring has in store. The walks are held on the third Thursday of the month and start at 11 am from the Visitor Centre. On the last walk three birds of prey were seen, as well as bullfinches and a siskin.

All of the guides for the walks are volunteers, part of an amazing group without whom the reserve would not function. From our site checkers and Visitor Centre Volunteers, to the wildlife surveyors and events team, we are so incredibly grateful to all of the volunteers who help us run the site. If you are interested in volunteering at Paxton Pits or would like more information about volunteering here, please get in touch with our Volunteer Co-ordinator Russell Taylor via email ([email protected]) or by phone (07955 435984/01480 406795).

Finally, a reminder that from April there are certain sections of the Heron Trail and Meadow Trail where we ask visitors to keep their dogs on leads or under very close control – keep an eye out for the green signs. This is to minimise the disturbance to ground and low-level nesting birds which may be in the bushes near the paths and we would be very grateful if you could adhere to this if you walk your dog here.

For more reserve updates, please visit our website paxton-pits.org.uk, find us on

Facebook or follow our Instagram page @paxtonpitsnaturereserve.

Do You Want to Make a Difference in Little Paxton The role of a Parish Councillor is a rewarding one and Councillors can be as active as they wish to be. Parish Council meetings are held on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month ( except August when there is only one meeting). Little Paxton Parish Council is the first tier of Local Government and is responsible for the QEII Playing Field, Children’s Play Parks, Parish Allotments, QEII Playing Field Car Park, Little Paxton Lawn Cemetery, 46 street lights, maintenance of St. James Churchyard and sets a budget for the Precept. The Council organises community events including Bands in the Park, Jubilee Celebration, Paxfest & Autumn Flower & Vegetable Show, Beer Festival & Community Litter Picks. There is an expectation that Councillors will attend training courses to help them carry out their role and to provide them with an understanding of what Parish Councils can and can’t do (on-line and face to face training is available). If you want more information about the role of a Councillor, please contact the Clerk Tel 01480 470193.

Parish Council Elections 5th May 2022

The Parish Council has a membership of 15 Councillors and the term of office is 4 years. 2022 is a Parish Council election year. The Notice of Election will be published on 28th March and the deadline for submission of nomination forms to the Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) Office

is 4pm on Tuesday, 5 April 2022. All nomination papers are required to be hand delivered to HDC in Huntingdon. Nomination Forms for Prospective Candidates will be available from Huntingdonshire District Council and the Parish Clerk will also have a small supply of forms. If there are 15 candidates or less the election is said to be uncontested. If there are more than 15 candidates there will be a poll which will take place on Thursday 5th May at the Polling Station in the Village Hall.

Will You Help Shape the future of Little Paxton?

If so the best way is to join the small team coordinating development of the Community Led Plan.

You can do this by contacting Jenny our Clerk on 01480 470 193 or by email: [email protected]

Our Vicar, Canon Annette Reed writes:

This comes with warm wishes to you all as we move into the season of spring with its cheerful message of new beginnings in the amazing world of nature after a win-ter hibernation. With Covid restrictions mostly lifted, many of the much-loved ser-vices and events that we enjoyed prior to March 2020 at St James have returned, along with some new ones.

How lovely it is to be able to see faces and smiles again without face coverings, though we completely understand if folk still want to wear one to keep safe. A very big thank you to everyone who has helped to look after the church building over the past few months and welcomed the variety of people who enjoy the com-munity space in the nave.

Over 50 members rejoined the Gardening Club for 2022 and we enjoyed

our first meeting on 2nd February with one of our favourite speakers. Geoff

Hodge inspired us with his talk on ‘Winter Colour - Beating the Winter

Blues’. Afterwards, over refreshments, members caught up with social

chat which is important to us all.

Here are some dates for your diaries:

6th April - Steffie Shields will speak on ‘Moving Heaven and Earth, Capa-

bility Brown and the Gift of the Landscape’.

4th May - Nigel Start will speak on ‘Getting to Grips with Pruning’.

18th May - Visit to a nursery in Buckden for an ‘Evening Workshop’

21st May - Spring Plant Sale including Tomato, Vegetable and Bedding

Plants.

9th July - Plant Stall at Paxfest..

There will be three outings for private viewings

to gardens during June, July and August be-

fore returning to Little Paxton Village Hall for

our autumn meetings, commencing in Septem-

ber. Last June members enjoyed one garden

so much that they arranged a second viewing

three months later to admire it in a different

season.

We have a range of members from beginners to experienced gardeners

but we all have enthusiasm and enjoy exchanging plants and gardening

tips with each other. Why not give us a try? ….And you don’t have to live

in Little Paxton!

Community Events at St James

As many of you will know, the nave area is used most days of the week by community or church groups.

Wednesday mornings from 11.00am to 12.30am is Tots and Carers Group – a lively and safe environment for youngsters and their carers with great craft activities.

Friday mornings from 10.30am to 12 noon is Tea/coffee and chat in a warm and very friendly setting.

The Local History Group meets every first Tuesday in the month at St James from 1.30pm to 3.00pm and recently we have been enjoying power point presentations of old photos of the village and beyond. Just £1.00 a session with refreshments.

Occasional Offices (Baptisms, weddings and funerals)

We are always delighted to be asked to conduct services for key times in the lives of families and we can be very flexible in arrangements.

Baptisms can take place on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon or at an All-Age Worship service on a 1st Sunday in the month.

Weddings are usually on a Saturday, but we do have some on other days of the week.

Funerals of course by arrangement but they take priority over other events that take place.

Contact Annette if you feel we can be of assistance.

The situation in Ukraine is very much in our hearts and for those who like to pray, here is a simple prayer for peace and hope in the region.

We pray that reconciliation will overcome hatred peace will conquer war,

hope will replace despair and that your plans for the world and for its people will be fulfilled.

God, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

With love and prayers, Annette.
