COLAC (\'ict.)-The usual cordial- ity pcrvnded the Colac Club's double clrampionsl~i~ meeting on ils picturs- sqtie grounds last month. Attend. ance was good altliough not as great as thc October meeting. T h e main events mere the Victorian Deauville Doubles Chainpionship, followed by the Western Districts of Victoria Double Barrel Cl~ampionsl~ip. T h e first-named contest, shot a t the re- gulation 20 pairs froln 18 yards, was not productive of good shooting. Re- cognised good pairs unaccountably failed to combine with the certainty expected. nTo possibles were scorecl, the best beins 18/20's by the two Bryants, Fr:ink Tuck-George Biggs, Geo Crosse-T. Shelton, W. R. Johns- "Duxbac." The lie shoot went only an round of 5 pairs. Tucli and Big-i; were the solitary coinpilers of a full scpre in the shoot-off, and ran out m~nners 23125. BARELLAN (NSW). - Barellan Club re-opened 'after years of war- tiine recess, \\-hen about fifty sl~ooters attended at last month's fixture. Jeril- derie, Griffith (a bus-load), Narran- dcra, Cobar and other close centres ,\.\.ere well rel, resented by shooters. T h e attendance actually took the or- ganisers by surprise and accolnmoda- tion was tased to the utmost. Ar- rangements arc in hand to approach the local Shorn Grounds Commiltec fo r permission to establish the Club's lay-out on it.; spacious grounds. If the application is granted Barellail i l l have a~>pointments seco~id to none, with an~ple refreshment roorns, booths, and shelter from indilkrent weather. Sl~ooting opened with a slveepstake and this mas divided by Bob Ferris (Jcrilderie), A. Palten (Icamarah) and W. McNalnara (Cobar). Bob Ferris donated his win- nings back la the Club. T h e main event, a 10 birder for President, Emil

Australian Club President, Dave Watson introduced a gesture +ich was warii~ly approved by all competi- tors at the Duke of Gloucester Cup presentation after shooting on Novem- ber 20. As the Cup was an or ig in~l Nobel institution, he called upon Les. L. Schilling, a former Nobel Pyesident, to distribute the trophies. Les, made an excellent job of this assignment. H e is now a veteran in the sport of clay pigeon shooting, having been one of the first Nobel inembers back in 1927. He also holds original badge No. 2 as issued by the A.C.P.T.S.A.

New clubs are continuing to emerge iram among the main country towns in the \-ictorian and New South Wales country districts Two of the latest which are now rapidly approach- ing the fullness of complete organisa- tiou in New South Wales arc clubs at Rand and Tumut. The latter or- ganisation is sponsored by the Aus- tralian Legion of Servicemen, Tumut Branch. A. J. Baker, forinerly of Ganmain and well known among Vic- torian shooters is one of the men "be- hind the gun" at T~imut. How's this for a new one? I t was noticed recently that several young shooters in the Western District of Victoria has shown remarkably quick developnlent in their respective ability to cope with the "busting" of the elusive discs. A whisper passed round that the quick improvement is easily explained. I t appears that dur- ing leisure hours the young sportsmen congregate at an arranged rendezvous behind some farm buildings and whilst one of the party tosses up the egg supply from various farms (ques- tionable vintage and otherwise) the others set about breaking the "birds" thrown at all speeds and from all aneles. We have heard of manv uses fo; eggs but never hefore as p;actice for clay pigeon shooters.

Dugald Stevenson, the Otway Forest (Vict.) ,74 year old veteran, who has been shooting for nearly 40 years, mas paid a nice compliment by the Colac Club last month. Unknown to Dugald (whose has long adopted the shooting name of "Otway" after his home district) the Club ran a tcstilno~~ial event on his behalf. A double figure sum,, was raised and handed lo "Otway, who was greatly surprised and deeply appreciative of the Club's thought; Dugald, when he attends shoots at Colac or even in hielbourne (where he has frequently coii~petcd) rides his bicycle from his back-country property to Colac, a distance of 27 miles, plus his gun tied up in a gunny sack and strung across his back. Gun Gossip . . U.S.A. Shooting . . (Ry "North Country" of the British

Rabbits offer sonle sporting shots \\.hen turned up from tussocks. This is a time for the sn~ail-bore gun or othcr light weapon, where this is not used all the tiine. I sin not in favour of too niucl~ chol<e in 12-bores. I have found that unless a small-bore has a fair m o u n t of choke its kill- ing powers are rather liniited. I t is all very well to shoot rabbits at the closer -ranges, but out in the opcn the range is soon incveascd. Tile rabbit yuu spot sitting in a tussoclc and pick out xvill bu certainly near enoueh. But a the arituinn dra~\-s on rabbiis rviil iumn uo farther out, and . . . in any case some are sure l a start up a t an unexpected angle and get \r.cll a\ray before the shoatcr renlises what is happening. A strong run- ning rabbit at 35 yards, if going away, nlay quite easily defeat the marks- man.

At one tinle I did a lot of shooting '.with 26 bores-delighlfui little guns. *.I had t v o of these giins, both with

outside hammer actions. One gun xvas bored i~nproved cylinder, the othcr W R S c h o k ~ d in both bai.rels. Now both these guns werc by first-class n~nliers and of good quality and care- fully bored. Their patterns were even and ,\-ell distributed. 13ut there \,.as no question as to \vliich was the better weapon for serious field work. The cholie-bore \%-as definitely superior. The cylinder was satisiactory tip to pcrhaps 30 yards, but beyond this range it iaclcctl eKcctivc stopping pau,\.er. I do not mean to infer that it v.as impossible to kill beyond 30 3- r's with this gun, ior I killed farther than that with it. But I never fclt confident over the longer sliots and too often I only managed to get quarry do~vn at a distance. The latter would be hit by onc or two pellets only and ~ e r l i a p s carry on for another 100 yards. The \r,holc thing was so indecisive. But for shooting at 20 to 25 yards or so the cylinder gun mas very cffectivc, light and al- ways a pleasure to handle.-(By e r - clusive permission of the Editor British Shooting Times).

HINTS TO HITS

(By Late W. P. Grosvenor)

I cannot remember which of the American trapshooters I contacted in years gone by who collaborated with me in preparing "Hints to ilits," but I send it along as it should be of assistance to you in the building up of an article for your future issues. I suggest that you quo:e it as a whole.

1. When targets are hard to "pick- up" (with the eyes) after leaving the traphouse, poor visibility, weak light. or due to poor back-ground, with the result that the swing is hurried in order to get on the target in time- try holding at a point a foot or more above the traphouse, or slightly below the line of the back-ground where the targct first becomes visible. This materially lessens the distance of swinging and hence obviates hurry, which is apt to cause overswing or snapping. There are times however, when it is better to hold low on the traphouse, as momentum of swing will help the shooter to carry through smoothly, after a slow start.

2. If extreme angles are severe (wide). take stance and noint of hold . ., so as to favour that angle when swing- ing. There should be no strain against the muscles a t the end of the widest swing. Shift the feet and body so as to meet the condition be- fore calling the target. This is
