    Miking up Acoustic Guitars

We will discuss how to vary the sound and tone ofthe guitar to suit a mix

    How to avoid feedback

Techniques to control on stage volume

Using the mixing desk we will revise how to furthermanipulate the sound.

Today we will look at some different ways to mic up anacoustic guitar for a live band situation.

As a group, go through the following slides, miking up theguitar using the different techniques shown.

Discuss as a class how we can use the mixing desk tofurther affect the sound of each mic position.

We will look at 3 mic positions.

Take notes on what is discussed!

To get a Warm bassy sound

To achieve a warm, bassy sound from your acoustic guitaryou will need to place your microphone about 8 inchesfrom the sound hole.

This is a very good starting point if leakage or feedback is aproblem.

To get a Warm, Woody tone

To get a woodier tone from the acoustic guitar, place themicrophone between 4 and 8 inches away from the bridge, angled towards the strings.

This will also reduce any pickup or string noise.

To get a well balanced, slightlybright tone

To get a more natural, brighter tone from the acousticguitar place your microphone about 6 inches above the topof the guitar and over the bridge.

This will pickup less ambient noise and sound leakage

You can achieve similar results by placing the mic at thepoint where the neck meets the body, again 6-8 inches

    away should be fine.

    EQing the Acoustic Guitar

The most common way to achieve a good sound from a micd upacoustic guitar is to use an EQ scoop.

An EQ scoop is when you boost both the bass and the treble

(not too much) and then cut the mids (you can keep the midfreq control on in the centre and just cut).

This causes a scoop in the frequencies, making what looks like asmiley face.

This is because the mids can sound harsh on an acoustic guitar, using a scoop achieves a much sweeter sound.

Once you have tested each mic placement andexperimented with the sound, get into groups of 3, discuss

and write down 2 possible ways to get a good front of housebalance when using micd up acoustic guitars and micd upelectric guitars/amps and micdup drums.

    Consider:

techniques to control volume levels on stage, withoutlosing volume front of house.

This could include things that you have done yourself orthings that you have seen done at gigs.
