Indonesian Diatrans Kidney Foundation (IDKF) is a not for profit organization which was established in 1983 by Chronic Kidney Disease sufferer group who joined organization known as Indonesian Dialysis and Transplantation Patient Citizen with Airforce Major Gen.Ret. Moeljo Pramono as the chairman. The objective behind the establishment is to help reducing the burden of chronic kidney disease sufferer, increasing their quality of life and assisting the government in improving community healthcare.

Year 1987 was one of our important millestone as we started the operation of our first dialysis center which also known as the first freestanding dialysis center in Indonesia. It didn’t take long before The Moeljo Pramono Dialysis Center (the center’s name was put from one of the founders who died in year 1986) reached its maximum capacity since our center not only providing the lowest price in comparison with other dialysis provider but also offer subsidy for poor patient.

Along with the increase of kidney disease sufferer who need dialysis treatment, has caused undercapacity in our dialysis center. Therefore since 2005 we have been running our second dialysis center located in Jatiwaringin, East Jakarta which has 19 stations including one isolated station.

In April 2008 IDKF tied an agreement with Rawa Lumbu Hospital to build new dialysis center located in Bekasi, West Java. The Center which has started its operation by the end of July 2008 was expected to replace The Moeljo Pramono Dialysis Center that closed based on strategic consideration. The Center have 8 station capacity and able to provide hemodialysis treatment up to 65 patients.

Since its establishment, IDKF focus in providing hemodialysis treatment for kidney failure patient. IDKF recognize the need of kidney disease sufferer who are mostly prefer to choose Hemodialysis as their treament modality, compare with 2 other methods namely Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Kidney Transplantation. The rationale behind the above fact are beside the patient sickness behaviour and the lack of organ donors, the government restricted the renal donation only from living related donors.

IDKF is curently running two Dialysis Centers located in East Jakarta and Bekasi, West Java.

The Jatiwaringin Dialysis Center, located in East Jakarta, has 19 stations and is currently the biggest freestanding dialysis center in Indonesia. about 135 dialysis patient is undergoing treatment at this Center. The other Center, The

Rawa Lumbu Diatrans Center, equipped with 8 dialysis stations, is right now caring for 45 dialysis patient.

IDKF works in partnership with the Jakarta administration related to implementation of Health Aid Program (Gakin) for the Jakarta’s citizen who are poor, followed by Health Insurance for the Poor Program (Jamkesmas) which managed by Ministry of Health.

Holistic Approach

IDKF’s understanding of “giving services for End Stage Renal Disease patient” doesn’t end with providing only hemodialysis treatment. We are also giving attention to aspects that contribute to the patient’s quality of life.

Psychological Aspect

IDKF work closely with the faculty of psychology, University of Indonesia to assist patient coping with their psycho-social problem.

Nutritional Aspect

Incorporating nutritional aspect in dialysis activities is an important key of successful dialysis therapy. Therefore patients undergoing hemodialysis in IDKF’s Dialysis Center are actively informed by our nutrician about all nutritional aspect that they need to know.

In addition , we also conduct monitoring on patient’s nutritional status during their therapy and

encourage them to take care of their own nutrition.

Economical Aspect

Having ESRD and undergoing hemodialysis treatment for the rest of life is very hard for the patient to face, especially those who are poor. Many sufferer have to give up the treatment because they are facing severe financial hardship.

Therefore we need to find a way to help alleviate their problem. Besides the conventional effort,we have been offering the opportunity for

patient to go back at work by providing employment at the Foundation.

Kidney Awareness and Education

In the last couple years there is a significant increase of chronic kidney disease in Indonesia. Unfortunately this condition has not been balanced with the effort to prevent or slow down the increasing number of chronic kidney disease sufferer. Right now in many dialysis center across the country it is easy to find young people suffering ESRD.

Above condition has resulted challenges for IDKF. Efforts to raise the awareness of community regarding this issue have to be done. Therefore in the last three years IDKF has been actively conducting activities intended to disseminate the community‘s

awareness of chronic kidney disease.

We are also going online by launching sayangginjal.org,a campaign website that promote kidney health and provide informationen needed for people with kidney disease.

Based on the fact, the growth and complexity of chronic kidney disease in the world globally and Indonesia in particular, strategic steps are needed to maintain the continuity of low cost and achievable dialysis center for the patients.

Firstly, we need to intensify our effort in term of obatining used / refurbished hemodialysis machines from any local or international organization, that sell or donate the units. Having our own hemodialysis machines enable us to keep the cost of hemodialysis treatment low.

Secondly, to develop our service closer to the community by building new small or middle scale low cost dialysis center across greater Jakarta region.which includes neighboring cities of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Banten and Bekasi. With this strategic approach we hope that we can improve patient’s quality of time and reduce their transportation cost.

Thirdly, to develop and strengthen relationship with any international communities who share similar view about the seriousness of kidney disease.

Challenge We Face‣ Maintaining continuity of low cost and achievable dialysis treatment‣ Developing our services closer to the community‣ Strengthening relation with international community
