Passports/Visas

Obtaining travel documents for your trip has become more complicated due to tightened security post9/11. Passports cost $55- $85 and have a turnaround processing time averaging six weeks (expeditedservice costs an extra $60). Plan ahead as some countries require passports to be valid at least six monthsprior to your arrival. Parents: Keep in mind a new State Department rule: Young travellers (age 14 andunder) must apply in person for a passport or renewal. Acquiring a visa can also be a challenge. Don'tassume you don't need one: Call your destination's embassy in advance to learn visa requirements, fees, and application processing times as they can vary widely. Australia, for example, has a simple online visaapplication costing $14 (20 AUD). Brazil, on the other hand, now requires Americans to obtain a visa

prior to departure and charges a $100 fee. For a country-by-country list of document requirements and American passport guidance, visit the U.S. State Department online.

5. The main idea of this paragraph is …

A. you do not need to take much luggage to enjoy a good trip

B. you should not take precious things on the plane

C. you can get good compensation if you travel by plane

6. According to the writer…

A. airline companies will send you a copy of the travel itinerary so you do not get lost

7. According to the text…

A. unattended luggage is more likely to be stolen on the plane

B. customs officers only search hand luggage to avoid thefts

C. checked luggage is more likely to be stolen lately

Luggage Logic

"The best packing question a traveller can ask is: Do people where I'm headedlive without this item?" says Doug Dyment, whose website, One Bag, offerspacking tips. In brief, you'll be better off with less. Additional tips: Never checkluggage containing valuables (cash, credit cards, cameras, jewellery); fragile items(eyeglasses, bottles); or critical items (medicine, keys, travel vouchers). Thisadvice is even more important lately, with checked luggage now subject toroutine hand searches and increased opportunity for theft. Stick a copy of yourtravel itinerary in an outside pocket of your luggage so that if it's lost the airlinehas a better chance of tracking you down while you're travelling. To insure yourluggage, ask for "excess valuation." With this you can bump up the liability to ashigh as $5,000. The cost: about $1 per $100 of coverage. Additionally, this givesthe airline more incentive not to lose your luggage.

9. The writer points out that …

A. a good sleep taken a few days prior to the journey will lessen the effect of jet lag

B. you’d better not change your daily routine so as not to feel jet lag

C. an accurate watch on board will help with the jet lag

10. According to the text, to help prevent jet lag from happening …

A. take a No-Jet-Lag tablet

B. have a shower and a long nap at your destination

C. have nothing to eat on board

Leave Jet Lag Behind

Jet lag happens when the body's inner clock falls out of sync with daily cycles of light, meals, and rest. Some medical experts estimate that travellers require a day of recoveryfor every time zone crossed—but who can wait that long? Minimize the effects bygetting several good nights of sleep before your trip. Set your watch to your destinationtime when you board the plane, and adjust sleep and meals accordingly. During theflight, do isometric exercises, eat light meals, and keep hydrated, but avoid sugary, alcoholic, or caffeinated drinks. On arrival, shower and throw yourself into your newschedule—avoid naps. No-Jet-Lag ($10 for 32 tablets) is a homeopathic supplementthat eases transitions to new time zones.

EJERCICIO 2

Lisa has worked in large and small institutions, including large banking outfits, brokerage houses, and small credit unions. She has helped countless businessesfind the right products and services for their needs. Currently she works as aconsultant.

To open a bank account you should follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Choose an InstitutionTalk with friends and relatives about where they have their accounts. Find out what they think

and whether they are satisfied with their own banks. If not, dedicate an afternoon to shop around witha friend.

Step 2: Decide the account you wantWhat type of account do you want? A savings account? i.e. an account designed to simply

hold money that you do not need immediate access to. When contrasted with checking accounts, bank savings accounts tend to pay a slightly higher rate, whereas a checking account generally doesnot generate interest, but allows you to write checks.

What type of institution do you want? a credit union? i.e. an institution owned by the“members” or customers. Contrast this with banks where the customers are just customers. Banksanswer to profitability – usually shareholders own a bank. Credit unions are non-profit organizationsthat strive for service over profitability. However, they are not charities.

Step 3: Go to the Bank or Website & pick the Product You WantThe advantage of opening a bank account online is that you can do it at any hour, anywhere.

However, if you only want to open it in person you can just show up at the branch during businesshours where you can just chat with a banker who will help you open the best account for your needs.

Step 4: Provide Your InformationBanks do not open accounts without certain details about you. This is to protect them against

risk and comply with a variety of regulations. You’ll need to provide simple details like your name andbirthday, as well as your Social Security or Passport Number. You will also need to provide agovernment ID or Driver’s License number.

Step 5: Agree to TermsYou’ll have to agree to abide by certain rules and accept responsibility for certain actions. If

you open bank accounts online, you complete this step by clicking an “I Agree” (or similar) button, whereas if you do it in person you should just sign some documents.

Congratulations you already have your bank account!!!

Final Tips & Warnings  Open your accounts at a bank near your home so that it’s convenient for you to make

deposits, use an ATM or talk with bank employees.   Consider how many ATMs the bank offers, whether they charge a fee and whether

24-hour customer service is available by phone.   Make sure that any bank with which you open your account is FDIC-insured, which

means that your money is insured up to $100,000.

EJERCICIO 3

Mrs Bixby and the Colonel’s coat

Once a month she would get on a train and travel to Baltimore to visit her old Aunt Maude. At least that was what she told her husband. What she really did was see a gentleman known as the Colonel and spendall her time in Baltimore in his company.

The Colonel was wealthy and lived in a charming house just outside of town. He had no wife and nofamily, only a few loyal servants, and in Mrs. Bixby's absence he amused himself by riding horses andhunting. Year after year the pleasant friendship between Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel continued without aproblem, and never once did Mrs. Bixby's dentist husband suspect the truth.

Then, after one visit just before Christmas, Mrs. Bixby was standing at the station in Baltimore, waiting forthe train to take her back to New York. It had been a thoroughly enjoyable visit and Mrs. Bixby wasthinking how different it all was from her dull husband at home, when suddenly one of the Colonel'sservants appeared through the crowd and presented her with a large cardboard box.

Mrs. Bixby: "Good heavens! What's he brought? What a big box! Was there a message?"

There had been no message, and as soon as she was on the train, Mrs. Bixby found a place where shecould open the box in private.

Mrs. Bixby: "How exciting! A Christmas present from the Colonel... I think it's a dress. It might even betwo dresses. Or it might be a lot of beautiful underclothes. I won't look. I'll just feel around and try toguess what it is. I'll try to guess the colour as well, and exactly what it looks like. Also how much it cost...Good heavens! It can't be true."

What the Colonel had given her was the most magnificent mink coat she had ever seen. The fur wasalmost pure black, with a touch of blue in it, as well, as deep rich blue. But what had it cost? She hardlydared to think. Then she saw there was a letter in the box, as well... a farewell note from the Colonel! Hehad heard her say once how fond she was of mink and asked her to accept it as a farewell gift. For his ownpersonal reasons he would not be able to see her anymore.

Mrs. Bixby thought to herself: "I think he's done this on purpose just to annoy me. He knew perfectly wellI wouldn't be able to keep it. But I must have this coat! I must! Very well, my dear. You shall have thecoat, my dear. But don't be afraid, sit still and keep calm and start thinking. You have fooled him before. The man has never been able to understand very much apart from his business. So sit absolutely still andthink."
