Qinghefang Historical and Cultural Block
» Each city has one or two characteristic old streets, and in Hangzhou the honor undoubtedly falls on Hefang Street and Southern Song Imperial Street in Qinghefang. Intersecting each other, they constitute the key relics of the former imperial capital. While the former testifies Hangzhou’s flourishing economy since ancient times, the latter bears the footprints of the“Son of Heaven”of a bygone era.
Hefang Street ( 河坊街 )» During Southern Song Dynasty, here was the political and cultural center as well as commercial heart of Hangzhou. Most of the city’s century-old businesses, such as Wangxingji Fans, Zhangxiaoquan Scissors, Wanlong Ham, TCM pharmacies of Huqingyutang and Fanghuichuntang, are located in this area. With them, there are a large number of traditional folk entertainments and handicrafts, such as Layangpian (raree show), straw weaving, hand-making of sesame seed candies and so on.

Expanding your horizen: Why do Hangzhou people love noodles?» The historical origins of Hangzhou’s love for noodles can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), when it moved the capital from northern Chi-nese city of Bianjing (now Kaifeng) to Lin ‘an (now Hangzhou), accompanied by a large number of officials and merchants. These dignitaries, who were used to wheat meal, did not switch to rice, as they were expected.
