President’s Report As the red and yellow flags have been removed from our shore line for the last time for season 2014-2015 it gives me great pleasure as president of our great club to safely say that “No Lives Were Lost” whilst our members patrolled our stretch of Gods country. South Narrabeen SLSC has had yet another efficient, exciting and enthusiastic season with its fair share of thrills and spills. It was great pleasure for me this year to award the Presidents’ Award to Mick Haven. Over the past 5 years Mick has been the driving force behind our successful and dominant Surf Boat Crews. The dedication that Mick shows to our club is beyond describable and I know that all our rowers appreciate the commitment Mick gives to them. All the effort was put to fruition this season with the Open Women’s’ rowing their way in the Aussie Open Women’s 2015 Final. The girls backed themselves all week guided by Mick and placed a remarkable 4th in the final. The Stingers were the 1st female crew from South Narrabeen to partake in an Aussies Final and the only crew to partake in a final since 2006. 2014/15 saw the revival of the South Narrabeen Surf Boat Carnival. Despite Mother Nature not allowing us to hold the carnival on the wet, windy and cold day in April, a huge thanks must go to Jess Brealey and her group of helpers for organising what would have been a very successful carnival. Our annual visit from our friends from the bush reached its 10th year and it was certainly a time to reflect on what a great association we have with the Brewarrina group. Unfortunately late last year our dear friend Aunty Joyce lost her battle with illness. Many thought the weekend wouldn’t happen, but with the countless hours our Bush to Beach committee put in to make sure the weekend was a success, again, saw another 40+ kids and supporters arrive on our doorstep for some fun in the surf. Thanks to Ted and his team. Our education team were hard at it again this season with the guidance of our trusty CTO Andy Cross. The work that Andy and his team produce year in year out only makes our club more successful and stronger for the years to come. The crop of youth moving from the Nipper ranks into the senior side of the club is outstanding. The major problem that all SLS club face is the lack of continuation of the nippers after finishing their nipper careers, but, South Narrabeen is a family club and our future is bright with the strong and effective group of 14-17yr olds that are present within our club. Our Nipper fraternity were out in force again this season guided by Richard Dowling. Sunday mornings at South Narrabeen is the place to be during the summer with the range of activities, education lesson and fun that our nippers get to participate in. The smiling faces our nippers leave with every Sunday morning is the reason why they return the following week and the following year. Congratulations must go to all our award winners from Presentation Night and a huge thanks to all our members who partook in the festivities. 2014/15 presentation night was the most successful for the club in a number of years. Thanks must go to Angie Thorpe and her crew for organising such an awesome night. Our Branch office has been a great support again this season. Thanks to Steve, Jen, Belinda, Marcial and Kristen and to Doug Menzies and his Executive for the guidance towards another successful season for the branch as well. As 2014/15 comes to an end, so does my time as President. The last five season have come and gone very quickly and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time. I must thank the current and past committee members for their trust, loyalty and also their commitment

in fulfilling their roles and making my job as president a lot less stressful. I feel it is time to stand down as I have achieved my goals as club president. I wish all our members a quite winter period and look forward to seeing you all on the beach for 2015/16 season. Rohan Fisher President

Administration Report

This year our membership was 292 Members and I list the Member status below. The Club Committee met 11 times from August 2014 to June 2015. Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm and all Members are welcome to attend. It has been a privilege and I have enjoyed working on this year’s Club Committee. Not only has everyone’s dedication been outstanding but also their commitment to process. From starting the meetings on time, contributing to resolve issues and also supporting Club initiatives. Many have put in a significant number of hours and tackled a range of complex issues. In addition to the Club Committee the Business Development Sub Committee, Life Members Mark ‘Boof” Dimento and Tony Haven and also Charles Longley worked in the background offering guidance to the Club Committee. Unfortunately the Terrazza Café had to close and I would like to thank Antonio and his family who encouraged many passers by to stop and sit for a while and watch the Patrols and our wonderful beach. We have a great Club to administer and manage and it’s important we do so to the benefit the majority of our Members and also ensure our Lifesaving commitments are fulfilled. With this in mind, here is a conceptual vision of the Club showing where our income is derived from and the main areas of expenditure.

Registration day is always a busy time and I would like to extend my special thanks to Member Thecla Haven who helped manage entering all the Registration details onto Surfguard and the continuing updates. It was great to see Thecla awarded her Honour Blazer at the Presentation Night. Martin Hayward Director of Administration

Finance Report

It gives me great pleasure to present the financial statements of South Narrabeen SLSC for the year ended 30th April 2015.

Financial Summary The Club posted a healthy surplus for the year of $31,101.60 before depreciation compared to $28,321.85 the year before. This is really remarkable as it comes on the back of a long and protracted and un-warranted battle with Council, over the operation and granting of a D.A. for the running of the kiosk/café where we incurred solicitor’s costs to the tune of $7,040 and fines of $3,056 dollars. Combine this with a noticeable easing in sponsorships and donations as well as a downturn in trade of the Ocean View Room due to heavy competition among other function centres and somehow not receiving any online enquiries for ten months. So where did the money come from, well it actually came from the kiosk by way of rent, the Ocean View Room being run more efficiently and profitably, the cost of electricity being metered, the boaties not breaking any gear, Karen Shapcott for running the Sunday BBQ and finally the Liberal Government coming into power and setting up the “Beach Safety Equipment Grant”. Looking at the balance sheet, you will notice that Current Assets are down approx. $107,000 dollars whereas Fixed Assets are up by almost the same amounted. The reason for this is due to the building of a new storeroom, lift area, as well as reducing the amount of excess stock of alcohol. Although the Club is in a sound financial position and able to meet its debts we must not be complacent, we must look at every financial opportunity that presents itself. We must be flexible and willing to change our way of thinking if we are to survive, as local governments and a slow moving economy put more and more pressure the Club. The kiosk/café is only the beginning To those individuals, businesses and organisations who made financial donations and donations in-kind I thank you. In particular, I would like to thank the Sands Hotel for their generosity and support over the past four years as it has helped our Club enormously and it’s a partnership we respect. A special thank you to Martin Thompson of Wong & Mayes Chartered Accountants for auditing our accounts and Bob Buckingham of Alan Hall Business Advisers for their continued accounting advice. In closing I would like to thank all those who have helped me and offered me advice this season, especially Thecla and Tony Haven, Mark Dimento, Karen Shapcott, Sarah Morrison and my fellow Committee Member colleagues. Quote of the season was from Sarah Morrison who said after Moose’s stint in hospital. “The operation went really well except for one thing, they forgot to cut out his attitude” Ahh, that’s what makes this Club special.. it’s the people. Luv ya Moose. See you on the beach. Charles Longley Hon Finance Director

Lifesaving Report As a club with a proud history of patrolling the beach and providing service to the local community we are very fortunate to have such a rich heritage at South Narrabeen. The 2014/15 season is only a small part of that heritage but the stats provided will leave you in no doubt as to the importance of each and every patrolling member’s role on the sand & in the water. I am most proud to have served our great Club as Club Captain for the 2014/2015 season. It has been an honour and a privilege to hold the position, and I thank you all for your support, commitment & dedication through the season. Our core activity of Lifesaving and Patrolling the beach was once again put to the test throughout the season when good weather brought huge numbers of visitors to our beach and when rough conditions put the public at great risk. Of the 72 patrolling days 53 were in fine sunny conditions hopefully we can beat that next year. We had a total of over 54,000 visitors to our beautiful stretch of sand at Southy, there were 7 beach closures. Over the year we had several rescues ; 18 with tube, 16 on the boards ; 2 major wounds, 7 minor cuts/abrasions , 20+ marine stings ; 2 searches & 3 lost children! But it must be said with over 1300 preventative measure’s this number of rescues & injuries would certainly be much higher if not for the hard work, dedication & thousands of hours our volunteers gave over the duration of the season which the local community, visitors alike can be proud of. In closing I’d like to thank all patrolling members for their efforts in keeping our beach safe over the season & look forward to seeing you on the sand for the 2015-16 season. Surf Sports Report

At the end of last season we knew there was a big task ahead for the rowers at Southy, by loosing the experience of sweep Scott ‘Moose’ Morrison when he stepped down to spend more time with his family, but 2014/2015 proved to be one of South Narrabeen’s most successful season’s to date. The season brought many highs and new experiences for the rowers and club, we entered our first crew into the Ocean Thunder Series and picked up a number of medals at Branch and State levels, and narrowly missed out on the pinnacle at the Australian Championships. This year a strong bond and hunger for success was developed within our rowing family, driven by sweep Mick Haven through an extensive training program and support from one another to better ourselves every session. Southy had three main competing crews all swept by Mick, and some cameo appearances from our reserves crew, swept by John Clark. Crews competed at seven Branch carnivals, Young Guns International (Collaroy), Manly ASRL Open, Battle of the Boats (Pacific Palms), Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Championships (Palm Beach) ASRL Open (Shellharbour), Beko Best of the Best (North Narrabeen), NSW State Championships (Umina) and the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships (Tugun). Our Open Womens crew also competed at four rounds of the Ocean Thunder Surf Boat Series. This season saw some fantastic surf conditions with newly mandatory helmets becoming a part of the weekly uniform, several relocations, a few cancellations but most importantly some of the best waves ever caught! Our under 23 women crew spent a lot of time spectating during February, their enthusiasm was great, and the girls were still at every carnival from start to finish. Mick earned himself the unofficial title of the big wave sweep by holding some spectacular waves in the biggest and most challenging of conditions. South Narrabeen’s 2014/2015 crews: Sliders – Sarah Bojko, Brittany Smith, Marissa Curnow and Alana Cross, swept by Mick Haven: These girls came together this year as a new crew. Sarah brought a few years of experience that was invaluable to the crew, she was able to share her knowledge with the girls and help with their learning of the crazy sport that is surf boat rowing. Mick’s coaching saw the girls develop immensely throughout the season in areas of fitness, commitment and competition. The girls had a strong first season making some finals (Newport and Long Reef) quarter finals at State and narrowly missing out on finals at the ASRL Open by finishing 12th in their first national carnival. These girls have all the ingredients for success, and with a few more years under their belt in under 23s I would expect to see great things from them, they are headed down the right path. The girls have brought a fresh attitude to the rowing family, and the club. Speed Dealers – Michael Bojko, Kelvin Thorpe, Jake Warner and Lachlan Cummings, swept by Mick Haven : What a season the boys had, with incredible results! The boys really pulled it together this season, they put in a solid amount of pre season training at the gym and worked hard throughout the season to get some great results in the competitive colts divison. Some of the highlights for the Living up to their name, the Speed Dealers took out the Manly Open carnival, a huge triumph in 6 – 8ft surf, many of the Open Mens crews struggled in the conditions at this carnival, the boys’ really proved their competence and skill in crazy surf. The boys then took out double silver

Page 48 South Narrabeen SLSC – 2014/15 Annual Report

(point score and carnival) at Branch in conditions that replicated Manly, with a nasty shore dump. The success continued down to Shellharbour at the ASRL Open, with a controversial photo finish tied bronze medal (you were the podium finishers from what we saw boys!). Horrendous conditions at State champs at Umina got the better of the boys in the second semi final. Aussies didn’t bring as much success as the boys hoped, but with the astounding results throughout the season they should be extremely proud of themselves, I cannot wait to see what next season will bring. Get back on the erg boys, big things ahead! Stingers – Ash Watson, Emily Bojko, Steph Hill, Sarah Oaten and Jessica Brealey, swept by Mick Haven : I can only speak for myself, but I am sure the girls and Mick will agree when I say we had a season all of us will never forget. 2014/2015 saw us have our most successful season to date, but also a year full of new experiences, stitches and a lot of hard work. We were privileged to enter the Ocean Thunder Series thanks to KONE Elevators and Simon Smith (co-owner MS Interiors), this had been a goal of ours for a few years but obtaining sponsorship was always a challenge. Being the rookies in the series we learned very quickly after the first round how high the standard of competition was. Normally all rounds are held at Dee Why, however round two was moved to Collaroy due to a 6ft+ swell, we had one of the best days rowing in the glassy, rolling, huge waves to take out the round. Mick really proved himself on this day, looking completely comfortable and at ease at the back of the boat, in his element. We finished sixth overall out of sixteen crews in the series. Ocean Thunder is a fantastic event for the future of surf boats, it brings another exciting element to the already exhilarating sport. We had some great rolls across the carnivals, we spent a lot of time in the water, as well as on top of it, but the most spectacular spill was at the Branch Championships at Palm Beach. The boat and I had a slight collision resulting in a sliced leg and 11 stitches. A consolation for not being able to finish the carnival was receiving a bronze point score medal in the emergency room at Mona Vale Hospital! After my injury Sarah got the call up from brother Mick to train with the girls whilst I was on the mend. Sarah fit in so well, she rowed the remainder of the season with us, her dedication and commitment to improving her fitness was beyond commendable. We could not have had the successes in the back end of the season without her being a part of the crew. We went on to take out a bronze medal at the State Championships and win the Beko Best of the Best Surf Boat Challenge. To finish off an already enormous season was fourth place at the Australian Championships at Tugun Beach on the Gold Coast in an exhilarating final, a day we will all never forget. Creeps – Paul Morris, Zac Freudenstein, Michael Boyle and Dave Hauser, swept by John Clark : The season would not have been the same without these boys! They only competed a few times in the season due to family and work commitments (strangely they only seemed to compete at the more social or away carnivals…), but gave so much support and encouragement to the rowers with a crewmember being at nearly every carnival. Lots of potential for this crew, hope to see you back on the beach in the 2015/2016 season. A special mention needs to be given to Mick, Southy’s Boat Captain, but mainly know as a sweep. Apart from losing his voice most weekends in summer from screaming at his crews, Mick also tows the boat to every carnival, runs fitness training in and out of the boat, and is trying to get a new business up and running. Sweeping, training, yelling at rowers on ergs and towing for three crews between November and April (not including pre season training) equals roughly 430 hours. Mick’s dedication and commitment to the club and sport is embedded through the summaries of each crew above.

A huge thanks to Torch and Thecla Haven who put in countless hours representing South Narrabeen at an official level, we could not compete without your assistance and support, we love seeing your friendly faces on the beach every weekend. Thank you from all the South Narrabeen rowers. Also thanks to Ang Thorpe for your ongoing effort for the club, but also coming to many of our carnivals far and wide, photographing all the crews and keeping the extended Southy family updated via Facebook. To all the rowers from this season, thanks for a fantastic year, you should all be so proud of your accomplishments both in and out of the boat. Hard work pays off, see you on the erg soon! Rower of the Year : Jake Warner Rowers Rower : Lachlan Cummings Competitor of the Year : Mick Haven Whilst surf boats takes up the majority of Southy’s competition, in 2014/2015 we had some huge successes in surf board riding with Andy Cross and Nigel Wickens competing at the Branch and Australian Championships. Nigel took out the top spot in short board riding at Branch, and Andy taking out gold in the long board. Fantastic effort! Not only is he a great surf lifesaver, he is a pretty skilled surfer; Andy made the semi final at the Australian Championships in an extremely competitive long board division on the Gold Coast. Anyone who is interested in competing for Southy in any discipline please get in touch, there is an event for everyone. Jess Brealey Director of Surf Sports

Junior Activities Report

South Narrabeen Nippers again had a good year with a lot of fun had by all on the sand and in the water. With a small increase in numbers on last year, we look forward to further increasing numbers as we move into next season. Year on Year we continue to see our Junior and Cadets grow. Our strong and growing SRCs grows represent the next generation of South Narrabeen lifesavers. It is also very pleasing to see a number of new nipper families. As outlined in the 2014 annual report, the nipper’s committee established a number of key objectives for the current and future seasons (2-3year vision). These were to:

• Continue to Grow the nipper Community, • Build on the success of the SRC / Cadet programs established in previous

years, • Continue the focus on Water based activities and skills, • Surf and Beach Education, • Encourage more parent involvement, and • Have a heap of fun with our Kids!

Page 54 South Narrabeen SLSC – 2014/15 Annual Report

In keeping with our objective to have heaps of fun, we continued on with our annual social events, including Movie nights and Christmas Parties. And the final nippers of the year the annual muck up day and parent events. Nippers ran very smoothly this year, due to the hard work of the nippers parents. We had age managers in most of the age groups, and when required parents willing to step up with minimum fuss. The key for us was that a large number of people did their bit, which made it enjoyable for all. In particular I would like to thank Jeff and Mandy Hewes (with Andy Cross) for their continued focus on Youth Development (SRCs and Cadets). For making the Beach / Water activities possible and safe, I extend my thanks to Grant, Troy, Scott, Michelle, Ratna and Sarah. A Sunday morning on the beach just wouldn’t be complete without a BBQ’d bacon and egg roll. Not only providing a valuable service to hungry Nippers, the proceeds of the Nippers Kiosk go back into help the club provide the require nippers equipment and upkeep. All this would not have been possible, without the motivation and dedication of Karen Shapcott. I would also like to extend my thanks to our Nipper Parent’s of the year Melanie & Brad Morton for the running of the BBQ each and every week. I look forward to the coming season, to build upon our 2014/15 successes. See you on the beach. Richard Dowling Nippers Chairman

Building and Development

First Floor Report Your club committee continues to strive to increase income through the greater use of the Ocean View Room and the Licensed Café area and other assets the club has at hand, this has kept the 1st floor committee extremely busy over the past twelve months. In September 2014 Warringah Council approved our DA for change of use for the Café area and we are in the final stages of having the construction certificate issued. This proved a difficult task as unfortunately a number of people were supplying the council with misinformation and it was not until we met with the General Manager and Mayor of Warringah Council that the matter was progressed. A number of our short-term business strategies were achieved in lowering the expenditure and increasing the profit of the Ocean View Room. The café traded for the summer period up until the end March and unfortunately due to personnel issues the operator resigned. The Café demonstrated that it has a foundation to provide to the club income plus providing our local community increased use of the facility and to help increase membership. It's amazing how many members of our local community who have come up and spoken to members about their disappointment that the Cafe is not presently operating. The storeroom is now completed and we have received our final payment from the State Government and for this I thank them for the funding. The long-term plan for the next two years is to renegotiate our lease with Council and the building of the members training room and also reducing the operating costs and in increase the profit of the Café. In regards to the Cafe we are submitting Section 96 to Council to install a kitchen in the Café and increase the seating capacity. We have met with Council concerning a new lease for the club. The major points that we require are a 20 year lease, sub leasing of areas of the club and the arrangements we finally come to with Council regarding the building maintenance. With these three issues Council are amenable to change and we are confident we will have a lease that will suit both parties. With construction of the Members Training Room we are having preliminary drawings done this will be followed by members consultation. When the drawings are completed and the DA approved and we are “shovel ready” the next step is to speak with our local Member of Parliament to assist us in applying for grants to fund the construction. In the short term as a club we need to focus on our finances and run events and functions and to set aside funding for the construction. I would like to thank my fellow committee members Mark Dimento for his great work arranging the construction of the storeroom and his guidance in operating a small business. Charles Longley for his wisdom around the finances and Martin Hayward for his steadying influence. Tony “Torch” Haven Chairperson1st Floor Committee

In the Community ANZ Centenary Row - 100 Years 100 Boats Southy was extremely proud and honoured to be a part of the 100 year centenary ANZAC Day ceremony at Collaroy Beach. The 100 Years, 100 Boats event involved more than 450 rowers from around Australia and New Zealand, and one Turkish crew. We had two crews participate in the event. Just under 100 surfboats came ashore to Collaroy to reproduce the landings of boats at Gallipoli during World War I. Sweeps were presented with wreaths made by local schools, before returning to sea and releasing the wreaths with oars up in recognition of the sacrifices paid by so many. In return the schools were given a pine sapling that is a genetic descendant of the pine trees from the battle of Lone Pine at Gallipoli, and the Collaroy event was held at the same time as the dawn service at Gallipoli. South Curl Curl SLSC did a fantastic job of organising the event it was a memorable day and a once in a lifetime opportunity for our rowers. Southy partnered with Narrabeen Lakes Public School and Allambie Heights Public School for the event.

Bush to Beach This was the club’s tenth year in putting on this marvellous & special weekend for 40 disadvantaged Aboriginal children from the outback town of Brewarrina. Sadly we lost Aunty Joyce Doole from Brewarrina in September last year and her passing has left a big and sad hole in the program. Fortunately her sister, Frances Clark stepped in and assisted in arranging the children, the insurance paperwork and permission notes. The Brewarrina group consisted of 40 children and 8 adults that made the 12 hour journey from Brewarrina however due to the large surf conditions the beach was closed on the Friday & Saturday. Andy Cross, Shannan Hitchen and several other members walked the group to Collaroy Pool on the Friday so the children could enjoy the first swim in the salt water. Brett Stewart from the Manly NRL club turned up and played touch footy with the group in the afternoon. On the Saturday the beach was again closed due to the large surf and the group was transported to Collaroy where the group underwent surfboard riding lessons with the Manly Surf School. The water safety provided by our club was again outstanding and reassured the children who were apprehensive at first but eventually got into the swing of things. On Saturday afternoon the group attended the Narrabeen Sports Academy and underwent archery, high ropes and swimming. These activities were undertaken with the staff from the Academy who provided outstanding supervision of the large group. Saturday night at the semi-formal dinner was again an outstanding success with Peter Madden and his crew preparing an outstanding array of hot food. On the night the room was abuzz with energy and the attendance of Mrs Bishop (Federal Member for McKellar), Mr Michael Regan (Mayor of Warringah) and Rob Stokes (State Member for Pittwater) who have such strong and loyal supporters of the program over many years. On Sunday the seas had abated and the beach was eventually opened the Brewarrina group had a fantastic time in the prevailing surf. The group competed in the beach events with and against our club nippers and some of the bush kids participated in the shortened swimming events. All in all Sunday was a magical day with the bush kids undergoing CPR training with club members, assisting the club members who were on patrol and assisted the patrol packing up for the day. 50 pizzas were the main course for tea and thanks to Pizza Hut for their ongoing support. We had 2 x D.J.s supply the music on Sunday night and the room contained about 100 people both from Brewarrina and the surf club who danced continuously for about 4 hours. I again have to thank Rohan Fisher (President), Peter Madden (Life Member), Brett Picknell (Life Member), Kim Brown, Cal Smythe, Ken & Di Passmore and Jack Cannons AM and my wife Pam for their unbelievable effort over the last 10 years in putting on such an action packed weekend.
