The university, founded in 1881 in Milwaukee, honors thename of Pere Jacques Marquette, the renowned French Jesuit missionary who first came to this continent 300 years ago and who, in1674, camped on the very site of what is now the city of Milwaukee.
Marquette University today is a dynamic, urban, coeducational institution of higher learning with approximately 13,800 students in ten colleges and schools:

The university also operates divisions for Evening Courses,Continuing Education, and Summer Sessions, which are attended bythousands of adults annually.

Marquette's faculty-the key to educational excellence-consists of more than 560 full time and 925 part time teachers and researchers.
This year the university will complete the first phase of its10-year Greater Marquette Program-an improvement and expansion effort that emphasizes quality.
Under its new president, Marquette University will continueto provide the vigorous leadership that modem society expects of aninstitution of its prestige and stature.
Marquette University, indeed, has pledged itself to an evergrowing role not only in the community but also in the state, regionand nation ... in research, service, teaching and scholarship.
The Very Reverend John P. Raynor, S.J., M.A,. Ph.L., S.T.L.,Ph.D., was appointed President of Marquette University on September 9, 1965. He was born and raised in Omaha, Neb. His undergraduate degree was received from St. Louis University where healso received a Master of Arts degree, a Licentiate in Philosophy anda Licentiate in Theology.
From 1948 to 1951 Father Raynor taught at St. Louis University High School where he also served as assistant principal. Hewas ordained in 1954 and later was awarded his Doctorate in Philosophy, in the administration of higher education, by the University of Chicago.
Currently, Father Raynor serves as a member of the Boardof Directors of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the CitizensAdvisory Committee to the Survey of Milwaukee's Public Schools,the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Industrial Research Council,the Advisory Council of the State Commission on Higher Educational Aids, and the Wisconsin Development Authority. He hasserved as a consultant and examiner for the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is active in many stateand national professional organizations.
