Lieutenant General Robert R. Blackman, Jr. USMC (Ret)Former President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

Lieutenant General Blackman was commissioned into the Marine Corps from Cornell University in 1970. Key assignments over 37 years of active service include command of 3d Battalion, 8th Marines; G-3 Operations Officer for MARCENT (Forward) during DESERT SHIELD AND DESERT STORM; Executive Officer to the Commander, U.S. Central Command; Commander, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit; Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy; President of the Marine Corps University; Commanding General, 2d Marine Division; Director, Resources and Assessment, U.S. Central Command; Chief of Staff of the Coalition Forces Land Component Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom; Commanding General, III Marine Expeditionary Force: and Commander, Marine Corps Forces Command. After leaving active service in 2007, Lieutenant

General Blackman worked with the Marine Corps’ Marine Air-Ground Task Force Staff Training Program educating operational planners and preparing commanders and staffs for deployment.

In March 2011, Lieutenant Blackman became the President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The Foundation’s Board of Directors selected him to lead the Foundation just as the organization launched its campaign to build the Final Phase of the Museum. When he stepped into the role, the Museum did not have the physical space it needed to hold permanent galleries to honor those Marines who served from the end of the Vietnam War through today.

“General Blackman made his permanent mark on Marine Corps history by raising the necessary support and overseeing the massive construction efforts required to enable the Museum to tell the story of every Marine, and to tell it in a way that wasn’t possible before,” said Mr. Paul Kalsbeek, Chairman of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Board of Directors. “The Marine Corps and our nation owe a debt of gratitude to Lieutenant General Blackman for his unrelenting commitment to this historic undertaking.”

Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr. USMC (Ret)12th Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

As a Marine Corps Major General and then as NASA Administrator, Charles F. Bolden, Jr. has dedicated his life to the service of the United States. He has worked to secure our nation’s security and prosperity and has guided efforts to explore our universe as well as to understand our fragile planet better.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Bolden flew more than 100 combat missions during the Vietnam War. He later served as a test pilot for the Naval Air Test Center’s Systems Engineering and Strike Aircraft Test Directorates. After completing his service as an astronaut in 1994, he served as the Assistant Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy and, in 1998, as the Commanding General of the Marine expeditionary force attached to Operation

Desert Thunder in Kuwait. He last served as Commanding General of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California prior to his retirement from the Marine Corps.

During his career as a NASA astronaut, Bolden flew on four space shuttle missions, logging more than 680 hours in space. He piloted Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986 and Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990 – the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. He also served as Mission Commander on Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1992 and Space Shuttle Discovery in 1994. Bolden also served as Chief of NASA’s Safety Division in the wake of the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

In 2009, President Obama appointed Bolden to be the 12th NASA Administrator, making him the second astronaut to hold that position. While heading NASA, Bolden oversaw the transition from the space shuttle system to a new era of exploration, fully focused on the International Space Station (ISS) and aeronautics technology development.

Major General Bolden holds a Master of Science Degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. His past honors include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, three NASA Exceptional Service Medals and four NASA Space Flight Medals. He received the Rotary National Space Trophy in 2014 and holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from numerous institutions of higher education. He was inducted into the U.S Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2006 and the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2016. He served as a U.S. Department of State Science Envoy for Space from 2018-2019. He serves today as the President and CEO of The Bolden Consulting Group LLC, a veteran-owned small business specializing in aerospace, national security, leadership and education.

THE MARINES’ HYMN

“From the Halls of Montezuma

To the shores of Tripoli;

We fight our country’s battles

In the air, on land, and sea.

First to fight for right and freedom

And to keep our honor clean;

We are proud to claim the title

Of United States Marine.

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze

From dawn to setting sun;

We have fought in ev’ry clime and place

Where we could take a gun;

In the snow of far-off Northern lands

And in sunny tropic scenes;

You will find us always on the job

The United States Marines

Here’s health to you and to our Corps

Which we are proud to serve;

In many a strife we’ve fought for life

And never lost our nerve;

If the Army and the Navy

Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;

They will find the streets are guarded

By United States Marines.”
